  1. From the album: Stormlight Archive - fanart

Hehe, I feel like I'm spamming with fanart... Oops, I did it again. I'm getting the hang on drawing digitally, but I still got a lot to learn... I hope you think this SA portrait series is kinda fun, because I'm having a blast.

  2. I've updated my old font for the Steel Alphabet (Final Empire era symbols). The new version improves the details on some of the symbols and improves the scale and alignment of the symbols which makes it look cleaner and easier to read. You can download it from google drive if you want to try it. Here's the same passage in both to show the difference. Old font New font (The old topic was nearly 6 years ago now so it's locked. Starting a new one seemed the way to go. If the mods think it'd be better to reopen that and merge this topic in that's fine. )

  3. Someone watching a sharder leave: I didn't think it would end this way. Me: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Leaving the shard is just another path. One that we all may take. The white blue home page of this website shuts off, and all turns to black glass... then you see it! Someone watching a sharder leave: What? Mac? See what? Me: New hobbies... and beyond. Different friends, and another beginning. Someone watching a sharder leave: Well, that isn't so bad. Me: [smiles] No... no, it isn't. Props if you get the reference.

  5. He walked as confidently as he could down the rows of reveling arbiters. The Heritage faction was a farce, established on a base of drunkenness and apathy. He was there to spark the revolution. That didn’t change the fact his hands were shaking as he reached into a pocket for the vial. He remained focused on his goal: The emperor. Remove the keystone and the arch would fall. A tall figure cut him off in his path. A minor arbiter of the Heritage faction. “Vostrath, relax! You look so somber. It’s time for celebration!” He forced himself to smile. “A celebration of what, exactly?” “The Rose Empire, of course!” “Of course.” He still smiled as the woman forced a drink into his hand. Keeping his lips closed, he lifted the goblet and pretended to drink. “Good,” she said. “Now, go, celebrate!” Vostrath gently pushed past, returning to his original task. With purposeful strides, he walked up to the emperor’s table. “Emperor.” He gave a flourishing bow and set the goblet he still held down in front of the man on the large throne, making sure it was next to the cup already on the table. “Compliments of Arbiter Shume.” “Arbiter Vostrath,” said the emperor, granting his permission to stand upright again. Vostrath withdrew his hand, and with swift movements, poured the contents of his vial into the Emperor’s cup. “Wonderful festival tonight.” The emperor gave only responded with a small nod. “Head Arbiter Alba wanted me to send her regrets at not being able to attend tonight. She is not feeling well.” “Thank you. Send her my regards.” The emperor waved a hand of dismissal. Vostrath bowed again before turning to leave. --- “He’s so stiff,” said Arbiter Tosgyn, gesturing toward the retreating Glory faction arbiter. The emperor watched Vostrath, not gracing Tosgyn with a response. He became too talkative when he was drunk. The Glory faction had become unusually accommodating as of late. It concerned the emperor. What were they planning? His arbiters ignored his concerns, calling him paranoid. They all believed their reign was untouchable. He didn’t agree. Tosgyn rambled on, but the emperor ignored him. Their festivals would only go so far at pacifying the rest of the eighty factions, but the Glory faction would not be so easily swayed. There had to be something they could do. Something they could use to cut down their influence. Tosgyn caught his attention as he reached for a cup. Too drunk to remember his own drink, he grabbed the emperor’s. He had already brought it to his lips before the emperor could stop him. Why was he even sitting there? With a smack of his lips, Tosgyn smiled and continued rambling on. The emperor tuned him out again. Until a strangled noise interrupted his thoughts. He looked to Tosgyn, whose eyes were wide. His face grew red and foam started falling from his mouth. The man collapsed forward, head slamming onto his plate of half-eaten food. Shouts of alarm rang out through the hall. The festival devolved into chaos. The emperor looked toward the doors. Toward Vostrath. The emperor shouted for his Strikers to follow. He was already off in the distance, a mere silhouette against the setting sun. Welcome to Cycle 1! 9. Thanks :-) Another possibility would be a quad arrangement with goals and approach to achieving those goals, so chaotic goals and chaotic methods, and ordered goals and ordered methods, which could allow, for example, Cultivation to have chaotic goals - the flourishing of life, things outside of her control - using ordered methods - pruning, fertilising, cultivating. So: Four chaotic goals, chaotic methods shards Four chaotic goals, ordered method shards Four ordered goals, chaotic methods shards Four ordered goals, ordered methods shards ... And I actually think I like that idea more, actually ... Of course, the main goal of this was to demonstrate the idea of the main shard worlds having shards with opposite ends of the ideas of order and chaos expressed. I suppose we will know more if the ideas of order and chaos come up in any Cosmere books or in Dragonsteel.

  10. Voidus gave the Stranger a nod as they passed each other, the Stranger stepping back from the Aluminium cage as Voidus stepped towards it. His friend had managed to work out some of his frustrations it seemed, and if they were fortunate then the display he'd made of the fight would dissuade anyone else from trying something similar. But now the spectacle had come to an end, Ajax waited within the cage, out of options but still refusing to surrender. Voidus had already confirmed that the man seemed strangely resistant to being drawn back into the Void directly, but there were other ways to ensure a soul was destroyed. He reached the cave and briefly matched eyes with Ajax, wondering what had motivated him to do all of this. Why all of this uncontrolled chaos? Why risk what had been risked? Was it simply a desire for power? To rule over others? Resources? But in the end, motivations didn't matter, talking would only delay the inevitable. So, reaching forward, Voidus snapped a splinter of Aluminium from the bindings around Ajax, and with an almost casual flick he threw it towards Ajax's heart. Towards a small bindpoint, usually used only for an Essence Spike. But where other metals would steal the soul, Aluminium would destroy it entirely. "Goodbye." He said simply.

  11. Here’s an oddly specific one, but I want a Rhyshadium to pick Kaladin. And Kal, as his usual grumpy, I only trust my own feet self, is disgruntled about the whole thing. But the horse just keeps following him around until finally Kaladin has to admit he actually really likes his horse and they’re best friends.

  13. This is a quick observation based mainly on the main Cosmere books. I find it interesting that, on the main Cosmere worlds, with multiple shards, the shards tend to function in a duality based on the concepts of Order - sterility or fixed patterns and general serenity, and Chaos - change and passion. Scadrial - "good" order, "bad" chaos Preservation - order and stasis. Ruin noted that if Preservation had his way everything would become stuck in a frozen moment with no change Ruin - explicitly about change and about damaging things, and as Ruin noted, what he does is about passion. Sel - possibly good chaos, bad order Dominion - obedience, hierarchy, government based on a single will Devotion - love and cherishing, putting another before yourself, and likely also something of passion. Roshar - interesting combination of three, with good order, neutral balance, and evil chaos, but hints that order isn't entirely good, or chaos entirely evil Honour - swearing to and upholding ideals, hierarchy Cultivation - chaos in the service of order, or adding order to chaos while keeping both - cultivation is to shape something that is growing, to fertilise and to prune, to take delight in the order and the chaos present Odium - passion, breaking the existing structures, lashing out, surrendering control Please note that I am not saying each shard is good or evil, only how they are so far shown in the stories. It is likely that alternative perspectives will be shown later. This is interesting, isn't it? Are order and chaos ideas that will be explored more fully later, general structures that the different shards adhere to? What are your thoughts?

  14. Hello everyone, This is Dhruv. A recent Brandon Sanderson fan. I came to know about Brandon and the cosmere last year over the course of a scientific conference from a fellow cosmere fan. I finally decided to take the plunge with The Stormlight Archive this august and well lets just say that I read through Way of Kings and Words of Radiance within a matter of 10 days. I wont call myself a huge fan since I just started with the cosmere, but I am thoroughly enjoying the universe. Ciao!

  15. I do like this organization. Order vs Chaos is a feature common to fantasy novels that get categorized as "grimdark". While what Brandon writes doesn't really qualify as grimdark, I think the Cosmere could be described in a way as a sort of un-grimdark, especially Stormlight. In grimdark, the true believers in things like honor are portrayed as naive (often dangerously so) and the forces of "Order" really only have their ordered world -- or the illusion thereof -- to protect them from the forces of Chaos. But in the Cosmere, the Order forces of Honor and Preservation and Dominon grant tangible power. I've often thought of Stormlight particularly as a rejection of the sort of ethical nihilism of grimdark, but put this way I think you could say that the Cosmere generally grapples with these themes and comes to some very different conclusions than other authors in this space.

She hadn’t even thought of what it would be like for Joy, unable to show herself to anyone else and with her Radiant, once her only link to the world, not able to see her or feel her emotion pulses either. She’d only focused on the fact that it wasn’t much of a change for herself, not having verbally interacted with her spren much. Wow, that was awful of me. “It’s okay, Flid.” Turning to Leona, she mustered a shrug and said, “I summoned my Blade - by instinct, I guess - when the Nightwatcher did...this.” She gestured to herself vaguely. “And I could see it then, so I guess it doesn’t count when it’s a Shard? But I’ve never tried to summon Plate.”

  24. Totally depends on how much one puts into critiquing, I suppose. I would tend to suggest two purely from the POV that I will probably pick up my guitar and learn/play along in addition to reviewing the lyrics. Also from the POV that I would prefer to be more focused on one of two different things, if you see what I mean? I'd also say maybe two at most. It actually took me about the same time to critique the song as a 2-3k entry, just because I had to think more in depth about the words.

  25. I'll just quickly do a breakdown of possible Order and Chaos arrangements - I'm not saying I think this is definitely the case, only that this might be how several are arranged. So, first a list of shards that are known, and the number that aren't - assuming Trell is part of Autonomy and no new pseudo-shards made from the parts of other shards exist: Preservation, Ruin, Cultivation, Honour, Odium, Devotion, Dominion, Autonomy, Ambition, Endowment, (six others) Order shards: Preservation - stasis, things unchanging Dominion - control and hierarchy Honour - adhering to a code (One other) Hybrid shards: Cultivation - shaping and encouraging to grow, order applied to chaos while preserving the chaos Endowment - giving gifts but not controlling what is done with those gifts, the gifts themselves flexible in application but rigid in their obedience Ambition - wanting to achieve own goals, being driven, and so likely wants things ordered according to own desires but chaotic in how that is approached (Five others) Chaos shards: Devotion - caring, emotion, and placing another above yourself - and if everyone does this there is no hierarchy (least chaotic of the chaotic) Ruin - breaking down, changing Odium - breaking bonds, rejecting responsibility for own actions, acting on hatred and so on impulse, doing what you like Autonomy - doing what you want, refusing to be restricted (might be a hybrid shard if prioritising own autonomy but will restrict others to achieve it) This assumes that each exists in one of the three distinct blocks, but it might be that the hybrid shards are in two groups, one being more chaotic and the other more order, and it also is possible that they lie on a line, with even in the chaotic shards section and ordered shards there are those who are more ordered and more chaotic, in which case Devotion is likely the least chaotic.

  26. Well, this continues to be interesting. I'd say lets go ahead and [x] develop a religion. The whole "being revered as a god" thing is undoubtedly uncomfortable, but people still expect it from us, and in the absence of actually having the knowledge to tell people about Shards and what have you, at least a good teaching could benefit people. I have no idea what the impact of this will be, it just feels like one of the more practical duties of the Returned. I propose that the core teachings shall be thus, in order of priority: Treat others well. Follow your conscience. Enjoy living. Seems like a decent-ish set of tenets to work from as a starting point. /shrug Also, and this part is important, they shall be presented to the public musically. Preferably set to tunes that are catchy and easy for people to remember. Ideally pieces that Songbearer has commissioned for this purpose, if we have the resources for that. In terms of council proposals: [X] Tax on clothes dyed a Returned’s colours – Coinspender Well, there's something like seven Returned, with two colors each. There are only six major colors, with a great multitude of individual hues falling within those major categories. So, it depends on what Hallandren legally considers to be a color. If it's only taxing the exact same shades as the heraldry of a Returned, as distinguished by the third heightening, then that is actually fairly reasonable, as it only effects those who explicitly want to support that Returned in the first place. However, I am also hesitant to align with Coinspender, so in this case, play it safe and abstain. If, on the other hand, this proposal uses a broader conception of what constitutes a particular color, than this is basically slapping a tax on the use color. Considering that color clearly bears huge cultural and religious significance in Hallandren, restricting access to it is almost definitely not a good idea, so in this case, against. [X] Impose new safety regulations on dockworkers – Firesoul I am inclined to support this simply by virtue of the fact that I trust Hera, and Hera seems to trust Firesoul to a greater extent. But also, I want to play it safe. Especially since we haven't actually met Firesoul, and don't actually know anything about the situation of dock laborers. Abstain. [X] Build a new library near the slums – Brightweave We are a bookish Returned. We like libraries. Also, an educated populace is in general a good long-term investment. Also, of all of the proposals, supporting this one seems by far the least likely to offend anyone. Support.

We don't know anything about feruchemical Chromium function. An ambush that could instantly kill a steel compounder is going to take out pretty much anyone, even a gold compounder if they aren't able to live long enough to start tapping. Steel is the unrivaled winner of what we actually know. As long as you have any forewarning whatsoever, you can react and kill someone before they can move. Bleeder moves quickly enough with steel to fire four gunshots from four locations in a room fast enough that there's only a single report heard. That's stupid OP.

  40. Update 1.2.1 – The Zinc Peripheral In Invested 1.2.1, the sphere's had a zinc peripheral installed, letting it use feruchemical zinc to increase its processing speed and slow down time. This makes it easier to fire coins while flying and select targets for Pushing and Pulling in the heat of the moment. See the changelog for all changes, but here's one in particular: you don't have to select targets before Pushing or Pulling on them. Trying to Push with no targets selected will Push on whatever metal you're looking at (dubbed "vacuous" Push/Pulling). This means you can fly around Luthadel without touching the keyboard. Since some of the controls have changed, be sure to check the in-game Help Overlay as a refresher. Next step: Means of quickly choosing different methods of controlling Pushes and Pulls. One of these will be a method for Pushing on all targets in a general direction, which Wax does a lot in the books. Another is the famous steel bubble. If math gets anyone excited, here's the fun differential equation I wrote for the intensity of the visual effect during zinc time. Fiddle with the variables and try to figure out what they're for, 'cause I ain't telling. X-axis is percentage of zinc remaining in the bank, and y-axis is intensity. Hope everyone's having a good summer. As always, let me know your thoughts. Update 1.2 Last year, I began working on a game/simulation implementing the magic system of Allomancy. I made a thread several months ago to document the initial state of the game and discuss different ways to mathematically model Pushing and Pulling. I establish a lot of the physics of the game there, so I recommend you read it if you haven't already. I've worked on the project a lot over the past few months. This post will be separated into three main sections: the first, focusing on the physics; the second, focusing on the game (with an interlude for more physics); and my plans for the future. Here is the second update on the progress of Invested. The Physics In Pagerunner's famous thread, I made several simulations comparing different models of Pushing and Pulling, showing off how Pushing duels could work as well as what happens when the coin you're Pushing suddenly hits a solid wall/ground. Those simulations can be all viewed in-game, so feel free to examine them yourself and experiment with the Allomancy settings. If we assume anchors do nothing special for your Pushes, Allomancy behaves like an undamped spring. If you push off of a coin into the air, you'll oscillate up to your max height, then fall all the way back down to the ground, then back up, and so on. Changing the relationship between distance and strength doesn’t change the behavior of the system. Pushing duels work in a similar way. The 10 cubes are allomancers, anchored to the ground. Without any dampening, you get a boring spring. The only model I could find that solved both of these problems was the infamous theory that the strength of Pushes is a function of velocity. In case you haven't been following those conversations, this theory (in its most basic form) claims "the higher the relative velocity between the Allomancer and target, the weaker the Allomantic force." Pushes on anchored coins will be stronger than Pushes on unanchored coins because anchored coins are completely stationary (that is, the relative velocity between the Allomancer and target is much smaller). The flavor of this theory that works best in the game (in my opinion) reverses the effect when the relative velocity is negative, i.e. when the Allomancer and target are moving towards each other. This means that Pushes on targets flying towards you are even more stronger than Pushes on targets flying away from you. When you're falling and throw a coin down, your Push will be weak until the coin hits the ground. Then, your relative velocity will be negative, and the Allomantic force will increase significantly, giving you a "jolt" as soon as the coin hits. This is the effect we see in the books, so it's what I have enabled by default in the game. With this model, Allomancers stabilize near their maximum height, rather than oscillate about it: Changing the constant used in the calculation of this velocity factor makes the system more critically/under-damped: Watch how duels play out. I've also unanchored the Allomancers, and this looks a lot more like how I envision Pushing duels in the books. The strength of the Allomancer is important, but weight determines who will move in the end. Again, you can experiment with these settings at any moment. The Game The player is a "primer sphere" - an Allomechanical construct or fabrial. It is an experimental device designed to test the limits of Scadrian magic. The sphere's mechanical nature gives it full control of its body and moment, allowing it to roll across surfaces and jump. This is enhanced by the first metal the sphere can burn: pewter. This is used for sprinting and pewter-jumping. By passively burning pewter, the sphere exerts a greater force while moving, allowing it to better anchor itself or move while Pushing and Pulling. While burning pewter and jumping, the sphere jumps further in that direction and can jump off or up walls or kick away small objects. Secondly, the primer sphere can burn iron and steel. Passively burning either of these metals reveals all nearby sources of metals. The wider the line, the heavier the source. The brighter the line, the stronger the potential Push on that metal. The sphere can "Pull-target" and "Push-target" one or more metals at once. When a metal is Pull-targeted, it can be Pulled on - likewise for Push-targets and Pushing. (Interlude: physics) After all the calculations are done, the player has some Allomantic Force they exert on the target. The mass of iron or steel burned is directly proportional to the net force they exert. If you're pushing with 1000N of force, you're burning 1000mg, or 1g, of iron every second. There's actually a WoB that mildly contradicts this: according to Brandon, metal burning speed is proportional to power drawn, not force. There are two reasons for why I make burn rate proportional to force. First, I can't be sure if Brandon is talking about "power" with the definition used in physics (i.e. a change in energy over time). If not, then there's nothing to worry about; the novels are wobbly enough to not be sure how precisely metals are burned. Still, in the future, I might shift things around to have all calculations work around power/energy rather than force, but the former is harder to calculate than the latter. My college-level textbook only talks about power in regards to applying a force to an object such that it moves at a constant velocity, so the math would get… difficult. I'm working on a model called "Distributed Power" based off of Pagerunner's model 3 that does something similar to this, but it's a work in progress. The main difference between force and power (in this context) is that power is a function of velocity; but, if we're using the Exponential with Velocity model, force still changes with velocity, just with a different relationship. There's potential for a fair bit of discussion in regards to this. The second, more important reason for making burn rate a function of force is reduce obfuscation - if you're consistently Pushing with 1000N, you know you're losing exactly 1g of steel every second. If you have only 10g of steel left, your intelligent lizard brain can figure out how long you can keep up that push. This relationship is more intuitive for the player, and changing this to power would lose that clarity. (end interlude) It wouldn't be Mistborn if you couldn't throw coins. You can toss coins. If you Push while doing this, you'll fire coins directly towards the crosshair. Holding "jump" while tossing a coin will throw it downward, useful for cruising above the ground or a smooth landing. There's also a "Coinshot mode." With this, holding down Push (right-click) and pressing Pull (left-click) will instead throw a coin. This makes throwing coins work more like a conventional FPS where the LMB fires bullets. This (along with all of the controls, I guess) is a WIP. There are a few scenes for the player to play around in: a tutorial and several sandboxes (as well as the Sandbox, which has some fun zero-gravity targets). cracks knuckles cries in GTX 965M Turns On Motion Blur it's gamer time (recorded back when I only had my laptop at school) There is an assortment of other videos here. The Future We've talked a lot about Newton's third law a lot, but let's take a look at Sanderson's third law: "Expand on what you have already, before you add something new." Better ways of throwing coins Changing between semi-automatic and fully-automatic coin-throwing Throwing multiple coins in different patterns Oftentimes in the books, you see Mistborn throwing a "spray" of coins at an enemy like a shotgun blast. Pewter From the start, my plan with pewter was for it to work like a shield in other games, where burning it will prevent you directly losing health. Once health actually becomes a thing, pewter will serve this purpose. HUD General polish is needed. It should be more clear when metal reserves are refilled, coins are picked up, on-screen text changes, etc. Sound The game's completely mute at the moment. I have little experience with sound design and production, so having a meaningful sound system is still a ways away. Controls I've been living in my own bubble, so I've grown accustomed my choice in keybinds. I am absolutely certain think that they're not the most intuitive. If you play the game, please let me know which controls make sense and which ones don't. Argent threw in the idea of using bullet time (or, perhaps, Feruchemical zinc time) for steel and iron. It would help a lot to make Pushing, Pulling, and target selection easier. In general, make target selection better. When you're surrounded by metal objects, there is a lot of visual clutter on the screen. I need to make a better system of prioritizing target selection so that you can say "I want to choose this target" and not accidentally select a target in front of or behind it. I definitely plan on adding macros/techniques for Pushing and Pulling. Vin's Horseshoe Wheel is one example. What I call the "centrifuge" is another - Pulling an object such that it orbits around your body, then releasing it such that it flies in the targeted direction. Lurchers never got their fair share of offensive combat in the books, so I want to show how formidable they can be, with a spicy little feedback loop or two. Other Allomantic metals Tin: zooming in, informative HUD elements about the environment, dispelling mists/visible stars in Luthadel. Bronze: see nearby sources of kinetic Investiture, such as puzzle elements or enemies that would try to Push on you. My requests for you: Play the game! You can download it from my GitHub. What controls make the most sense for you? What bugs and physics kinks do you find? Sanderson's 0th law says to err on the side of awesome. What should I add that would be fun? Mistborn is a fantasy novel, after all - so what are your fantasies for Allomancy in a game?

  43. that's not what he said. Depending on which metal you use, aluminum-atium would drain, duralumin-atium would increase, like an external version of aluminum or duralumin, but not the same way as chromium/nicrosil. but remember, Atium alloys do "expanded mental and temporal" effects. not Physical or Enhancement, and seem to flip the internal/external axis of the metal it's alloyed with (gold shows others' gold shadows instead of your own as Malatium). So it wouldn't be like that. It'd be more like it speeds up or slows down the burn rate of your metals in a temporal sense, like if you could speed bubble just the bit of someone's spirit that burns metals. same for chromium/nicrosil + atium, but reversed; those would affect your own burn speed. What this would be like is sort of like... a reverse Flare of your burn rate with aluminum-atium, dulling your burn rate in exchange for some efficiency in how you burn, vs a Flare that can be stacked with actually flaring your metals. technically you could get even more burn rate potency out of it if you flared the duralumin-atium and your target metal (Let's say pewter.) If this duralumin-atium doubles the burn rate of other metals, and you flare it, let's say that it doubles the doubling effect, so you get a 4x speed multiplier when flaring that alloy. If you then burn pewter, you burn it at 4x speed for 4x the power. If then you flare the Pewter, let's say for the sake of simplicity that it also doubles the burn rate. Is it additive or multiplicative? Do you get 6x speed, or 8x? I'm leaning towards 8x because the Duralumin-atium is giving the multiplier to the overall burn speed of your other metals, meaning the flaring rate for pewter would also get boosted. And then with the aluminum-atium, you could have a slow burn of something like Tin, so that you can get enough of a boost without burning through it, letting you use up minimal amounts of your tin supply for the effect... Of course that's sort of moot because Tin will always be more plentiful than both aluminum AND atium, but for something like, say, a different atium alloy, being as efficient as possible could be critical to your success with it.

  44. Ultimately, if the lyrics come in under 5,000 words ( ) then go with it!!

  45. Someone could do the math and figure out how far Lift could 'fall' under the appropriate multiple of gravity (base acceleration of 6.8 m/s^2 on Roshar) and not really need to account for air resistance since Lift can negate that and also heal if she somehow exceeds the limits of Abrasion. The issue would be figuring out how long Kaladin's lashings could last and whether there's a point of maximal efficiency. My guess is the totally unscientific 'pretty storming far'.
