  2. Somehow, there was still hope among the people. There wasn't much left, though. Of hope and of people. By now, most had retreated into whatever shelters they could find. The world was going to end, and there wasn't any good reason to doubt that. That is, if you weren't one of the (approximately) dozen people who decided to take a desperate stand. Somehow, the impending deepness and death had only fueled their determination. And so they fought. Welcome to LG59! This turn will end on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2019, at 12:30 PM PDT. Please remember that PM's are closed throughout the game. There has been a minor change to the rules due to game size. The Inquisitor can have a maximum of 1 convert at any point in the game. The full rules may be accessed here. I appreciate every single player for signing up to play this game during such a busy time of year. Thank you. Also, shoutout to @Haelbarde for the title idea. 3. You know when you’re listening to a song and you realize you’ve had the lyrics messed up the whole time? The first time I listened to “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes I thought at a certain point he said, “Chicken, farting onto my knees,” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VbfpW0pbvaU Skip to 01:09 if you want to hear it. Have any other funny misheard lyrics?

  7. I'm on my second era with an uninvested character and to be frank about it, I love it. Initially it was a shock. RPing one of the weakest characters in a room is very different from RPing one around or slightly below the average strength. That isn't to say an uninvested character has nothing for them. 150 points of skills add up. But the reason people don't make uninvested characters isn't a matter of character slots (for most people). It's really because of how different an experience it can be. The character has one less protection. Even Feruchemy can add a sense of security to a character. RPing Light Acute is very different from RPing Eve, despite the fact that storing Identity isn't very useful normally. The first thing an uninvested can fall back on is their brain, rather than Investiture. They also tend to have a very different experience in Alleycity. Weaker invested characters also get the feeling for this too, but less so. To be in a city ruled by godlike entities is very different when they're powerless. I am all for there being more uninvested characters in the Alleyverse. There is an imbalance, I agree, of the ratio of invested to uninvested, but I don't believe this is the way to solve it. This is where to start: We need to create a mindset in which people understand that uninvested characters aren't a waste. Because, truly, if anything they're much more rewarding.

  8. Doc flipped through a faded notebook filled with impossible designs. He had drawn them back in high school. It seemed like such a long time ago, now. His head had been filled with dreams. Dreams for a better world, one with far less conflict. Scattered among the designs were scrawlings outlining a 'better' system of rule. Annotating the faded pencil drawings were small blocks of text explaining exactly why each design wouldn't work. Those were fresher, less faded, but the color and medium used to write them varied wildly. Doc had written them while homeless, using whatever he could find. Pens, pencils, markers, and even crayons. "I'm convinced that doing this, proving my past self wrong, kept me in a sane state of mind. The work, it kept some of that hopelessness away. Until I met you, of course." Yes, I remember. You thought me a figment of your imagination. "Yes. You argued with me for days about that." Doc smiled, remembering those few... weeks? months? before he'd sworn the First Ideal. "We had to bumble through it. I had no clue what I supposed to do, and you couldn't tell me. You got quite agitated." Well, you were being unreasonable. the Stormfather rumbled, stubborn as ever. "Well, now I feel like I'm in the dark. I barely know what our enemy is capable of, and my Knights have enough problems on their own, without evil death creatures trying to wipe them out. I can't protect them forever, you know." James. You don't need to protect them. You must trust that they can protect themselves. You're no Windrunner. You must guide them to the right path, and trust that they can face the dangers. "I'm not sure I can do that." I belive that you can. And I think you do as well. Doc had been absently flipping through the notebook during the conversation. He paused on a drawing of a suit of gleaming power armor, fingers resting on the old paper. "Very well." He breathed out, searching for the Words. They came to him easily, and he spoke them. "I will guide others to the best path, and trust they can face the dangers along it." The many gemstones in his workshop suddenly exploded with Light, pulled from another Realm. Doc breathed in, and it flowed into him. "Now for the real test." he muttered, "Can I summon Plate." Probably. Doc reached out to the Sormfather and pulled something through their bond. He exhaled, releasing the something. Light flashed around his body, and, plate by plate, slate gray armor burned into existence. He mentally commanded the helm to disappear, and it poofed away. Then his chair collapsed under him. "Storm it. This'll take some getting used to." Doc grumbled.

  11. I’m really sorry guys. I’ve been trying to write a post over the past week or so, but I’ve just been way too busy to be able to commit enough time to this, especially in a way that Itiah.’s amazing roast deserves. I really wish that I could have, but unfortunately real life has to take precedence. So I’m going to go ahead and post the 5 stanzas I have, but please consider this a forfeit.

  16. Disclaimer: This is purely a proposal. I do not in any way speak for the mod team, or the Alleyverse as a whole. So, I've noticed something we have extremely... lacking in the Alleyverse. I'll compare this situation to the Reckoners RP, as it's an issue they've had as well. Vanillas. A term used for those without powers. Regular people, people who have no powers, no magic artifacts. Just people. And there comes my idea. For a month or so now, I decided that, next era, I would RP a vanilla NPC. The plan was to ask everyone not to control actions directly. This character would progress as far as they progressed, untill, as I was fine with, someone killed them. Then I would make another vanilla NPC, and keep going as such, in this pattern. I would have character development, maybe eventually some of them would get soulcasters, or a shardblade. Maybe they would convert to a religion. Maybe they would join a guild. But my purpose for them would be to have real characters, real people, who act as they should, can die with a whim of the godlike entities in the Alleyverse. Because we have those NPCs in the Alleyverse. And we do kill them. But we don't show what they should act as, that they're people, with emotions. And I started thinking to myself, what if that's not enough? One person, with one character? The Alleyverse would still be supremely unbalanced. And that's where my idea comes in, the proposal I warned you about in the disclaimer at the beginning of this post. I would ask the mod team, as it is, to add a sixth character slot. Something not the same as the rest. A Vanilla slot. The Vanilla would not have over thirty points in skills, and would not have any investiture. They would be similar to an NPC, killable by anyone, with the difference of no one controlling the actions. Yes, it would add work to the workload. But I think it's worth it. To add a dimension to the Alleyverse, an important one, we haven't had. And, of course, not everyone would have one of these characters, in all likelihood. But with this, the random extra character wouldn't subtract from your whole, and gives motivation. And, you know, if you're not up to the task you could always make me a mod (I'm joking, btw) -Ark1002, Triarchy Member, Head of Recruitment, Ghostblood Extraordinaire

  18. I've never really been very vocal, either online or irl, about how down I'm feeling due to my personal circumstances. Sometimes I've found it had to get around anywhere that isn't my kitchen and then its straight back to bed. I've always put on a face of a confident young guy who is outspoken and funny but, as you've probably guessed, that's a wall that needed a hammer taken to it.Recently, my family and girlfriend gave me a bit of tough love. Just in regards to my behaviour and attitude to life and it really hit home. There was no malice or bad intent but it genuinely has given me a new outlook. I'm 30 on the 10th of September and really need my life in order. I've managed to just get out of bed and go and do things without worrying where some form of depression or anxiety is taking me and, if I stick to it, it's a start.Guess I just wanted to post a positive result recently.

  25. Week 1, Day 5: The Builder The first part of the day is spent watching the staff install your new sculpture in your drawing room, waiting while books are gathered on Breath and the Heightenings they grant for your perusal. You sink into a soft armchair by a roaring fire, and take the time to look again at the artwork. All of them spoke you to somehow, a resonance you can’t quite describe, but this one struck the greatest chord within you. You look at it, and can’t help but imagine being in the debating hall, arguing passionately about something. What that thing is, you don’t know yet; you haven’t really been ‘alive’ again long enough to hold strong convictions. But you know you want to help people, however that manifests itself. “You realise, of course, that You can’t save the artwork every time,” Hera says, as she enters the room with two servants trailing behind her. One puts a set of books on a table, and the other places a tray of biscuits and a pot of tea beside it, and pours you a cup. “Perhaps…” You admit. “But it seems like such a shame to destroy such a beautiful piece.” “I don’t think You would care this much about it if it wasn’t to be destroyed,” Hera replies, as she nods to the servants to let them know they may leave. “Its temporary nature lends it a beauty and value beyond what it would otherwise have. Much like the Returned themselves, some might say," she adds. "But it seems to have captured Your eye, which is good. Returned have a certain capability to see beyond the physical, into the meaning of art.” “Don’t you want to know why I chose it?” you ask, after a moment to consider her comment. She shrugs a little. “It’s Your reason, no-one else’s. I cannot gainsay it, nor would I want to. You may not even know the real reason Yourself, so there’s no real need for me to know. It is for the philosophers to debate upon.” You can’t help but laugh a little. “So… so my opinion means nothing, hm?” She pauses. “I didn’t mean it like that…” “I’m joking,” you say, trying to put her back at ease. “Thank you, though, for the books.” “Of course, Your Grace,” she replies, giving a bow. “I have selected a few I know to be reputable and exhaustive on these subjects. Any aspects that You wish to test, myself and the other servants will be happy to help with. Aside from Awakening, of course,” she adds. “I’ll let you know,” you reply, reaching out to take the first of the books. “I would also like to meet some of my peers, though I must admit, I don’t know who to begin with. Or even who they are.” Hera nods. “Very well. While the Court was much larger, recent events have led to the previous Returned moving on. The Court is therefore much younger than it normally would be, and only numbers eight, including Yourself. You are the youngest.” “In order of increasing seniority, the next would be Quickfell the Diligent, then Fatespinner the Fortunate, and then Brightweave the Creative. Firesoul the Merciful and Coinspender the Generous are more-or-less equal in the time they've been Returned,” she scowls a little as she says Coinspender’s name, “and then Kindsmile the Cordial, and finally Lawmaker the Honest, who organises the debates by the Court by virtue of her relative age. Which of these would You wish to meet first?” “Well… I was hoping to meet Returned who help people,” you explain. “So it sounds like Coinspend-“ “Do not let His name fool You,” Hera interrupts, and then pauses again. “My apologies.” She says, falling silent. You wave her on, and she nods a bit. “He is… a parody of His name. He believes that if He calls Himself that, people have to believe that He is. The rumour is that He only uses His position to further the merchant business He owned when alive.” You are quite surprised by the amount of vitriol she shows for another God, and are quite glad she doesn’t seem to show this disdain for you. “So… Not him,” you say. “Who actually helps, then?” “Firesoul does the most for the people,” she says, “but this makes Her extremely busy, working at Her hospices. I would not be able to arrange a meeting this short-notice. Quickfell and Brightweave are Your best choices, I would say.” “Quickfell, then,” you decide, “as he is the next youngest. Can that be arranged?” “Indeed,” she nods, “I shall make the arrangements while you study.” You thank her and she leaves to carry out your will. In the meantime, you open up the book you took from the pile, though perhaps calling it a treatise would be better, as it goes into exacting detail not just in the mechanics of how Breath works, but the philosophy and culture behind it. Eventually, you call in a few servants to help you. While you’re already aware of this ability, it surprises you just how easily you can tell between two similar but – to your eyes – distinct hues of red, or how accurately you can tell which notes are being played at which scale. Perhaps being a musically inclined god won’t be so difficult after all, though considering your draw to the name ‘Songbearer’, perhaps you were already knowledgeable in that area. Well, a question for another day. You finish by practising with the so-called ‘perfect life sense’ that the Fourth Heightening grants, and it surprises you how accurate it is, granting you sight beyond your eyes. Returned must be difficult to assassinate, you assume. You close your eyes and request that the servants move around while you guess their location, which they agree to easily, though they become a bit nervous when you suggest turning it into a game, with you hunting them down. Eventually, Hera collects you from the drawing room, and after a light lunch (or what passes for a light lunch for a Returned), you find yourself bundled into a carriage with her. The journey is awkward, with her trying simultaneously to not look at you but also not ignore you, so you make it easier for both of you by looking out the window at your surroundings. It’s the first time you’ve left your domain, but it doesn’t seem very different outside to inside. You never leave the Court, simply travelling from one estate to another. The grass verges are finely cut, the flowerbeds abundant and bright. The road you are driven along is clean, with not a stone out-of-place, and it seems strange to you that such care should be taken for you and the other seven they’ve deemed as Lesser Gods, below only the God-King. In the distance, you see the rest of the city on the horizon, and while it still seems very colourful, you can’t help but notice that it’s darker out there, far more crowded, with vague but constant noise reaching your ear on the breeze. To your surprise, you are not let out at the front of Quickfell’s home, but taken around the side, along a slightly more beaten pathway. You carry on past the back of the mansion, and out towards a woodland. Near the treeline, the carriage stops, and Hera steps outside to talk to a man in green and brown robes. A short while later, a set of wooden steps is placed before the carriage door, and you step outside, ducking your head to avoid hitting the carriage roof. “Your Grace,” the man says with a bow, not looking up at you. “We are honoured by Your presence, and humbled to be the first to host Songbearer the Wise. I am Quickfell’s High Priest, Naran, and will serve You in any way You desire.” “…Thank you,” you reply, after a long pause, while you try to figure out how to respond. “I’m… glad he was willing to meet on such short notice. Though, I am surprised to be meeting him out here, rather than inside.” Naran grimaces a little, but quickly hides it. “My Lord prefers to be outside. He is a great proponent of an active lifestyle. Please, this way,” he says, indicating a direction with a bow, and then leading you and Hera towards the trees. As you get close, there is a thunderous noise, and the ground seems to almost jump around you. There is then another. Then, a booming voice calls out “Timber!”, with a loud laugh following it. There’s a crunch as a tree before you collapses onto the ground. “Chop it up for me,” a tall, broad, bare-chested and muscled man orders, waving a large axe at the fallen tree. He grins at you and calls you over as he heads towards a whetstone. You look at Hera, who gives you a small shrug, and starts talking to Naran about something administrative that immediately goes over your head. Finding no help there, you approach the other Returned. Even if it wasn’t for his sculpted physique and apparent ease at ordering people around, you could tell this man was another God, your Aura Recognition tells you that easily. You approach from an angle at which sparks aren’t flying as he grinds the blade against the stone. “You’re the new kid, then?” he asks, looking up at you from his seat. You realise briefly that this merely makes him the same height as a normal person. “New kid?” you scowl. “From what I’ve heard, I’m only a little ‘younger’ than you. Besides which, since we don’t know our old lives, maybe I’m actually older than you. We’d never know.” “Hah!” he barks a laugh as he examines the blade, shakes his head, and grinds it down again. “Isn’t that the truth…” he mutters. “But I was called new kid before, so now it’s your name. Best hope someone dies so you can call them it, hm?” “I’ll start praying,” you reply dryly. Quickfell chuckles and checks the blade with his fingers. Despite seeming unsafe, he doesn’t appear hurt by this, and nods to himself, standing up. He flips the axe in his hand, catching it by the blade, holding the handle out to you. You can only look at him with a combination of worry and surprise, hoping that the other Returned aren’t as uncaring as him. “You want me to have a go?” you ask. “Seems only polite,” he says. “You don’t look as weak as most of the others, so I’m curious.” You sigh and take the handle. Despite being a large axe, you have no difficulty holding it steady in one hand. “Fine… Any tree in mind? You’re aware I have no idea about technique, as well. Best clear the area.” “I’ll be fine,” Quickfell waves it away. “As for technique, Returned are strong enough that it won’t matter too much. Just need to cut around chest height at an angle, until you’re most of the way through. Then gravity takes care of the rest.” “Well… Alright,” you say, still a bit bewildered. Should you really be doing this? You look over to Hera, who looks over the situation and then cautiously nods. Wonderful. Quickfell walks over to a tree, relatively thin compared to the others in this forest, and taps along its trunk. “Here,” he instructs, and then steps back. You raise the axe and swing, feeling a little anxious. The blade bites deeper than you expect, but you keep your balance, just. “How are you finding it?” he asks, his voice quieter now, so you can’t be overheard. The bombastic motions and speaking have gone now, replaced by something that might be concern. “Being dead?” You ask, wrenching the axe out with a bit of effort. “It’s not what I expected.” “Good,” Quickfell nods. “We all cope with this different ways. Humour works. Throwing yourself at something works. Anything to distract you from the situation.” “So what do you do?” you ask, taking another swing, and another chunk out of the tree bark. “I was told you help people.” “I do, but not how most people want me to. We have these petitions,” Quickfell waves a hand, “and they’re all worthless. Can’t see myself ever granting one.” “That… is not what I expected you to say,” you admit. “Isn’t that meant to be what we’re here for?” Quickfell grunts, a surprisingly human thing for a God. But then, maybe he had as much difficulty thinking of himself as a God as you do. “I’m not in a rush to die again, Songbearer. And not for some idiot who hurt himself and wants me to fix his mistake. Actions have consequences, and it’d do the people of this city good to remember that, rather than rely on us. A bit lower down,” he adds, and you adjust your aim before taking another swing. “So how do you help people?” you ask. Quickfell holds up a hand to stop another swing, and puts his hand on the trunk. He heaves a little and pushes it, the tree toppling over. “Timber!” he yells, and a bird flies out of a nearby tree at the noise. “So…?” you continue, lowering the axe. “I cut trees and then build things,” Quickfell shrugs. “Houses, carts, boats. People always need lumber and things made of lumber, and I can collect it quickly with my apprentices,” he gestures towards some of the priests who, you realise, are wearing more rugged robes than Naran. “I might not directly save a life this way, but I improve them. A roof over a poor family's head, a boat for a new fisherman. Maybe it does save a life somewhere, who knows? I’m not the only one that thinks like this either, or Firesoul wouldn’t have her hospice. Though I guess hers is more direct.” “It’s something to think about…” you agree, considering it in your mind. Quickfell runs a hand over the cut you made as you think. “Not a bad cut, for a first time,” he says. “Well, if you need something to do, to keep the boredom at bay, you know where I’ll be. Two Returned are better at this than one, yes?” He grins and slaps you on the back with a loud thud that almost makes you stumble, the attitude matching his larger-than-life appearance again. “Y-yes,” you say, as you regain your footing. “Thank you for the offer, I’ll bear it in mind.” “…How did that go?” you ask, on the way back. Hera closes the book she was reading and sighs. “You offended his High Priest, or rather implied to him that You were offended by their choice of meeting place, which could cause problems, but impressed Quickfell Himself, thankfully. I wouldn’t worry too much about Naran, however. He finds fault with everything and is overall too soft. So, I would say that went about as well as I expected,” she says, causing you to wince a little. “As much as I regret the question,” she continues, “do You still wish to meet the others?” “Eventually,” you nod. “Why do you ask?” “If I send out requests now, it will be easier to meet them tomorrow. You have no tasks, and therefore could do so if you wish,” she says. “Perhaps even Firesoul, if I know now. Indeed, it might be best to meet the other Returned in a personal capacity before the Court convenes in two days time, though You won't be able to meet them all before then, I'm afraid. Who You choose to visit, or what You choose to do is, as ever, entirely Your choice.” Longer chapter than intended, but we've met another Returned, and you have your first look at the new Court of Gods, and the people within. The next day is a clear day with no guaranteed events, but after that there will be more things happening, such as petitions or politics. Free Time What will you do tomorrow? Select two. The top two will occur. As before, the following list is just a set of suggestions, and is not exhaustive, and you may suggest approaches to these tasks as well. 27. Personally I suspect Sanderson is doing something sneaky - each book isn't just introducing one order, it's introducing two. One for the Knights Radiant, and one their Void Knight counterpart. Moash is being prepared to be the Windrunner equivalent on the Voidbinding chart. He is either Kaladin's antithesis, or a pawn in one of Cultivation's many plays against Odium.

A bit back, there was this website where you could submit a picture of yourself and the computer would paint it into a portrait. Last Halloween, I dressed up as a parshendi. I submitted a photo of myself and the results were pretty creepy.

  29. Anyone interesting in some updated speculation on the Stormlight 4 outline? Here's the visual outline from Brandon's latest update: I'm sticking to my guns from my original speculation when Brandon revealed the split into three arcs, more or less. Brandon has said that Dalinar's role will be somewhat reduced in book 4, and that makes me strongly suspect that he's one of the two characters in Group Three. I'm guessing that Dalinar will be busy with politics in this book. His main role will be continuing to develop/unite the Coalition and to continue establishing the reformed Knights Radiant. He'll be in Urithiru naturally. So the next question is who might Dalinar be paired with? It has to be someone with a story to tell in Urithiru. I've seen Szeth proposed, and that makes sense. But I'm left imagining Szeth just following Dalinar around while he attends meetings, and I have a hard time seeing this as particularly compelling. Meanwhile, I strongly suspect that we need to advance the subplot concerning Urithiru itself in book 4. We know the city is a giant fabrial in some sense, and we know from Pattern that there's something odd going on in Shadesmar around the city. So you need someone who knows about fabrials and you need someone who can enter Shadesmar. It's got to be Jasnah. There's perhaps an argument to be made for Shallan, with Navani around for fabrial support... But Shallan has other things going for her, and I think Jasnah is a much better fit. Besides, she's the Queen of Alethkar now. She doesn't have time to be roaming Roshar on adventures. She's going to be in the center of the politics. In the center of the Alethi refugees in Urithiru. Digging into Urithiru is going to involve the Sibling, so it makes sense to have Jasnah paired with our first Bondsmith as well. And of course this let's Navani be around her husband while she assists Jasnah with the Urithiru business. This all fits really nicely, the way I see it. Group Three: Dalinar and Jasnah Next I'm going to follow the popular opinion and agree that Group One is all about the primary conflict between humans and singers in/around Alethkar. We've received two preview excerpts so far: one where Kaladin makes an appearance in Hearthstone and one of Venli in Kholinar. You might argue that these locations are quite distant, so maybe we're dealing with two separate groups here. However, we know that these scenes are almost certainly coming from early on in the book. I'm guessing something will bring them closer together by the end of Part 1. We also know from this recent update that the Primary Plot will primarily feature three characters. I don't see anything obvious role for Shallan to fulfill here, so I'm going to sit her aside. Who's left? We've got Szeth, Renarin, and Lift as our other "main characters." (I'm leaving Ash and Taln out here because I reeeealy don't think we're going to see them step up yet.) We've also got Adolin as a sort of secondary main character. My money is on Szeth. We've never really seen a whole lot from this dude. A few interludes in TwoK. A few chapters in Oathbringer. And he's gone through so many changes through all this. We really need a chance to understand who Szeth is before we launch into "his book" next. He's certainly the perfect person for... whatever job Kaladin is up to sneaking around in northern Alethkar. And I'm betting we'll see some sword-nimi development as well. Brandon's surely going to double down on the Cosmere significance that we saw in Oathbringer. So who's our 4th and 5th characters in this group? Renarin and Lift could work... But I'm betting we see Lift take a back again. She doesn't have any essential role to play in the current story and she's young. She's going to be in Dalinar's newly established Hogwarts, injecting some of her humor in the Urithiru plots on occasion. Interacting with the Azish who are around. Renarin has been set up as a scholar so I don't know what he'd be doing out there. My money is on Adolin and Moash. Adolin and Kaladin have so much chemistry, so it just makes sense to put them together. He's a Highprince, so it makes sense for him to be out taking action to retake his homeland. And it makes sense for Moash to be wherever Kaladin is. And it makes sense that he'd end up where Venli is. Group One: Kaladin, Venli, Szeth, Adolin, and Moash So what about Shallan? She's the biggest gaping hole so far. The "what" with Shallan is obvious. She's part of the Ghostbloods. This is the key plot that she's involved in, and the most interesting. Oathbringer didn't feature much Ghostblood activity after Part 1, so it only makes sense that we're going to dive in deep on book 4. And the Ghostbloods want her to investigate Sja-anat. Oh lookie. Of the "ten primary characters" there's only one I haven't really found a place for so far, and he has a direct connection to Sja-anat of his own: Renarin. Now, Renarin is a really mysterious character, and I don't think he's going to fully shine until books 6-10. So I'm not supposing that we're going to walk away from book 4 with all of Renarin's mysteries uncovered. I simply thing he's a solid choice if you need someone to give this Unmade a visit. I'm not entirely sure why Dalinar and Jasnah would be comfortable sending these two off to single-handedly. I skeptical Shallan will reveal her Ghostblood mission to begin with. So how does this happen? Here's my guess. Another huge story element that Oathbringer uncovered a few times was the fact that weird things are going on in the Horneater Peaks. We've had a time jump. The Horneater Peaks are in the middle Jah Keved, so this is a HUGE vulnerability for the Coalition. Meanwhile you've got Rock who probably needs to pick up his responsibility and go take back his homeland. This is the key. Dalinar and company realize they need to investigate the Horneater Peaks. They need a team to go in, do some careful recon, and see if there's anything that can be done to secure the region. What do you do? You call Bridge Four. This gives a place for Brandon to insert several Bridge Four characters into the story without trying to cram all of them around Kaladin's activities. It gives Rock a chance to return home. It makes Dalinar/Jasnah/Navani/Adolin more comfortable with Shallan going along. (She'll probably have Ishnah, Vathah, and maybe some others with her as well) Shallan doesn't have to reveal anything. She just goes along and (either intentionally or by mistake) ends up interacting with Sja-anat, who has moved into the neighborhood now that Kholinar is secure. Group Two: Shallan and Renarin I'm guessing that Adolin or Szeth were originally planned to be with this second group, and then Brandon just realized the third major character didn't really need to be there, and probably could have a more interesting role elsewhere. --- So there's my predictions. Anyone else want to take a swing?

  40. Technically, a dictatorship is great. It has the potential to be a lot more effective. The problem tends to be that power corrupts, and dictators tend to look out for themselves. Furthermore, why should one person get to make the calls? We are equal, so that doesnt make sense, which is why we have democracy. I think Wits point is Alethkar is close to disaster, and the Highprinces are squabbling and looking out for themselves. Thus, they need a man like Dalinar who is just and can make good calls. Does that mean that Dalinars leadership can be justified, if we look at it with the lens that we have today? No. Dalinar is a former warlord, usurped a throne and rules without the mandate of the masses. But right now, he is Roshars best option. I think that the bottom line is wether it is okay to have a tyrant, if that tyrant is our best hope for salvation. And that is a very complex philosophical question, which has been debated for centuries.

  46. For the sake of all that we Hoid sacred in the Cosmere If you feel like it, put this into the Cosmere, the Musical! thread (see my sig). Also: Tien opened his hands to reveal a Black Sphere, weathered on all sides, but with a jagged break on the bottom. Kal picked it up, looking it over. He couldn't see anything distinctive about it at all. In fact, it was dull. "It's just a Black Sphere," Kal said. "Not just a Black Sphere," Tien said, taking out his canteen. He wetted his thumb, then rubbed it on the flat side of the Black Sphere. The wetness darkened the Black Sphere, and made visible an array of Black patterns on the Black Sphere. "See?" Tien asked, handing it back. The strata of the Black Sphere alternate Black, black, Black. The pattern was remarkable. Of course, it was still just a Black Sphere. But for some reason, Kal found himself smiling.
