  7. Of all the times to trip and get a bloody nose, Zath thought to himself in irritation as he stood before a bathroom mirror, holding a wad of tissues against the offending nostril. I'm supposed to be at the wedding right now, I'm Apollyon's best man! One of them, at least. I should be there! Hurry up and heal, nose! Zath carefully removed the tissues, ready to replace them if needed, but fortunately it seemed as if his nose had finally stopped bleeding. Zath quickly washed his face and hands of any blood and checked his reflection in the mirror to be sure he was presentable. He didn't want to cause a scene on Ene's and Ap's special day. To his own eyes, Zath looked like himself, dressed in a tuxedo and bow-tie for the wedding. However, Zath now knew from experiences earlier in the day that to everyone else, he looked just like his profile picture on the 17th Shard: a guy in a battered, black leather jacket with the head of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Zath didn't know why that was the case. Maybe if he'd done a face reveal, he'd be seen as he actually was? In any case, at least the bow-tie was still visible to other people. Zath hustled out of the bathroom and through the halls, heading for the chapel. As he approached a small side door where he could discreetly enter and get to the spot where Apollyon's best men where supposed to be, Zath heard a loud THUMP, followed by gasps and stifled screams. A sudden dread filled Zath's stomach, as if he'd just eaten several pieces of stale jerky that didn't just disagree with him, but had formed an entire debate club dedicated to disagreeing with everything. Zath opened the door and stepped through to find the chapel in mild chaos. He could see a sizeable hole in the ceiling right above the altar. Standing at the altar was AonEne in a white, long-sleeved wedding gown, embroidered with golden dragons and Aons and whatnot. A crowd of people was rapidly forming around Ene, and everyone seemed to be focused on a crumpled, bloody form on the floor. A form in a white suit... It was Apollyon. "Oh. Oh no," Zath murmured faintly. It was a terribly inadequate response to the tragedy that lay before him, but it was the best he had on such short notice. Apollyon, whom Zath had seen and spoken to earlier that very same day, was dead, killed on the day that he and AonEne were to be married. How could this have happened? "Well! This wedding just got a lot more exciting, huh?" said a voice from Zath's right. Zath turned to see who had spoken. A wiry young man with a mane of unruly amber hair was leaning against the wall next to Zath, watching the goings-on with interest. The guy wore a weathered brown leather jacket, worn jeans, and sturdy boots. A short katana was strapped to his thigh. His face was thin and mostly unremarkable except for his nose, which-- judging by its crooked shape-- looked like it had been broken pretty badly at least once, probably more. "Who... are you?" Zath asked, still in slight shock. "We've met," said the young man casually. "Multiple times actually. Just focus for a bit, it'll come to you. You wrote me, after all, so you have some immunity to my Semblance." Zath frowned at him in confusion. "Wha...?" Then the confusion turned to a sense of familiarity, then to a vague recollection. "Wait, I do remember you," Zath said hesitantly. "I ran into you outside the... uh... oh yeah, the kitchens. You were... eating the food that was supposed to be served after the ceremony." "Yep!" the amber-haired guy replied. "Just getting a head start on those h'or doeuvres. Free food is the best part of weddings." "Wait, you're Beram!" Zath remembered. "And you used your powers, you used your Semblance on me to erase my memories of you!" "Well, you seemed like you were getting cranky over h'or doeuvres, of all things" Beram explained calmly, "so I figured you'd be happier if you forgot about seeing me eating them. You're welcome." "I-- you-- but--" Zath stammered. "Plus, the caterers were starting to get annoyed with me, so I figured I'd make them forget about me too so I could enjoy that free food in peace," Beram continued. "Two birds, one memory wipe." "That's-- but-- you shouldn't--" Zath stammered. "C'mon," Beram said, pushing himself off the wall. "Let's go see what's going on over there." Beram started heading over to the people crowded around Apollyon's body. After a moment, Zath sighed and followed. Zath recognized almost none of the people gathered around Ene. As he and Beram drew closer, many of them suddenly flew through the air by various means to the hole in the ceiling, presumably to investigate. Okay, that just happened, thought Zath, who was unused to seeing people fly so casually. Beram, on the other hand, seemed to take it in stride. Near Ene stood a young woman with long brown hair in a gold dress ringed with topaz around the waist. Zath thought she might be Rebecca, one of Ene's bridesmaids. She looked a bit queasy from the sight of Apollyon's body, which was totally understandable. Also nearby, offering Ene a cup of pudding, was someone who looked like... who looked like... Actually, Zath wasn't sure. Somehow, Zath got the feeling that the guy looked like what he was supposed to look like, but his appearance seemed to shift subtly from one moment to the next, depending on what was happening. ...Or not so subtly, as he was abruptly dressed in a pinstripe suit and a fedora, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He looked like a private investigator straight out of the early 20th century. And... was that jazz music in the background? Just as abruptly, the guy's appearance returned to normal, whatever "normal" was, and the music faded. Zath blinked, then decided he was better off not asking. Zath also noticed a guy dressed all in black near the back of the chapel, with a porkpie hat pulled down over his eyes. Who dresses entirely in black for a wedding? That's more of a funeral thing, isn't it? A veritable menagerie of characters accompanied him, most notably (at least at first glance) a man in a gleaming white, armored mech suit of some kind. They all seemed to be heading toward Apollyon's body, too. Zath and Beram joined the group around Ene, and Beram crouched down to get a closer look at the body. "Mm-hmm, this fiancé is certainly dead," Beram said, gazing from the body to the hole in the ceiling to the people nearby. "I'd bet on 'murdered', personally." "What makes you say that?" Zath asked worriedly. "Well, you know what they say," Beram said, "a fiancé takes the 'n' out of 'finance'." Zath blinked uncomprehendingly. "...What's that supposed to mean?" "It means I know how to spell 'fiancé'," Beram replied. "Beyond that, nothing much." Zath sighed, and then turned to Ene. "I apologize for Beram's lack of tact," he said. "And I am so sorry for what happened to Apollyon. Maybe if I'd been a better best man, I could've prevented whatever it was that led to this." (...Did I just say 'a better best man'? Zath thought. Language is weird.) To those around Zath (except for Beram, weirdly enough), it was as though his voice was coming from somewhere within the battered leather jacket, slightly muffled. The dog's head poking out from the collar of the jacket clearly wasn't doing the talking. In fact, as Zath spoke, the dog seemed to be sniffing the air with mild curiosity, not paying much attention to what was going on (honestly, it was hard to tell what the dog was focused on, given that each eye pointed a different direction).

  10. Brandon's going all out for the surprise twist. A certain despised one-eyed low-nahn darkeyed pardoned deserter will become first a squire then a full Radiant, heal his socket with Stormlight, and saves humanity by unexpectedly taking down Moash/Vyre. That's right. Gaz FTW! While a certain Lordling Windrunner grits his teeth!

  12. Brandon does like his tragedies, but Dalinar vs. Renarin feels too forced and more in line with a truly brutal epic series like Malazan Book of the Fallen. Why does Kaladin vs. Moash feel too obvious? Because we've had three books of character development leading to that conclusion, including all the back story and ancillary interactions such as with Elokhar and Amaram. Dalinar seems like the other obvious choice for human champion, but I wonder if his ties with Honor have made him too powerful to take on that role now. There are plenty of other opportunities for surprises, tragedies, etc. and of the characters that have been in all three books, it feels like Kaladin and Moash are being written for those roles. I wouldn't put it past Brandon to want something more straightforward for "casual" fans, and at some point, you should go with the flow of the arcs you've written vs. forcing a change. With that said, I think odds of Adolin going rogue dropped considerably after OB, leaving him as another possibility to represent humanity. I just don't know what pairing makes sense (other than bringing Sadeas back somehow). Jasnah has enough sorceress vibe going on that I think it could be flashy enough, but she has her own book in the back 5, so if the champion battle is in the front five I think that that rules her out. Doesn't Renarin have a book in the back five as well? That probably rules him out, especially if the books focus on "good" or "neutral" characters like they have so far. Still feels like Kaladin vs. Moash even though it does feel too obvious. But if the hardcore fans think it's too obvious to believe, then that may be good enough for Brandon to go with it (no doubt cackling with glee at having played his fans so well )

  15. I have been in the Moash vs Kaladin camp for some time myself. Not everything has to he a narrative curveball. Some things are built up to over several books. I'd like to see Kaladin swearing oath 4 (about accepting failure or some such), so that his climax in book 5 has him swearing the 5th oath, which will involve being willing to kill someone he cares about (i.e. Moash) if it is necessary to protect others. 5th level Kaladin vs Moash with honorblade and who knows what else. Kaladin will eventually win, of course, but he will die heroically in the process. That's my speculative headcanon, at least.

Each turn, players get to Hurt one thing, and Heal another thing. Hurting removes one health, Healing adds one health. Later in the game we may move to two. Here's the last one https://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/86517-hurt-and-heal-ocs/ This game, the theme is Cosmere nations. I've made a list. As it's already a bit large, we're not adding any more. We start now. Go. 20. Hey!!! I just joined and I'm super excited. I kind of silently lurked here before I made this account, but now I can actually interact! Woo. I'm Mae, she/her. I love Cosmere, especially Stormlight!! I just finished Mistborn Era 1 and I'm currently working on Alloy of Law : D I've drawn some art for Sanderson's books before, and can I just say that it's super hard to work out how to draw literally anyone's face shape??? And it's just with his books that I have this problem. Especially Kaladin's Young But Has Been Through Some Stuff kind of look.

  25. "Fast enough for you?" As the blades sank in, the black fire they produced began to cover the Stranger. They outlined his entire body, creating a grisly tableau. The Stranger's grin widened. "Oh my sweet boy, you've no idea how foolish that was," The cowl of souls erupted from him like some kind of hellish geyser. The shades of countless people and creatures screaming, seeming to tear themselves from the wounds. They enveloped Ajax like rushing water, engulfing him. Screams filled his mind, raw hatred and ragged terror suffusing his consciousness, making it extremely difficult to formulate thought. Burning copper seemed to lessen it, but it couldn't drown them out. Their faces filled his vision, a parade of the lost. Young and old, male and female, familiar and unnatural. Their grasp could be felt, innumerable ghostly hands pulling and grasping at him. And they were getting louder. Ajax snarled, "You think this can stop me? It will take more than a few ghosts." He moved to slash his swords sideways, trying to bisect the Stranger. But they wouldn't move. He looked down, through the fog of the fallen and saw the Stranger's hands wrapped around the blades. The Denizen bent backwards at an unnatural angle, til he was face to face with Ajax. His eyespike shon like a fell beacon, contrasted by the swirling darkness of his right eye. "Oh, it gets worse. Much worse." Then the Stranger tapped ludicrous amounts of steel and moved with a speed that made compounders look sluggish. His whole body twisted like a shark in the water, jackknifing horribly, and he lunged towards his prey. As he shot forward, he soulcast a bronze spike in the air and caught it in his teeth. His eye gleamed and he rammed it through Ajax's bicep with such force that it went clean though and out the other side, where an Alley opened up and swallowed it. The Stranger looked Ajax in the face and whispered, "I'm going to tear your very Soul apart. Your Allomantic copper is the first price I require. Now, why don't you allow my friends to introduce themselves properly." And the cowl of shades renewed their assault, unhindered by any copper clouds. The Stranger began rioting fear and soothing confidence, creating a living nightmare for his opponent. Now was time to make him suffer.

  26. I've never really been very vocal, either online or irl, about how down I'm feeling due to my personal circumstances. Sometimes I've found it had to get around anywhere that isn't my kitchen and then its straight back to bed. I've always put on a face of a confident young guy who is outspoken and funny but, as you've probably guessed, that's a wall that needed a hammer taken to it.Recently, my family and girlfriend gave me a bit of tough love. Just in regards to my behaviour and attitude to life and it really hit home. There was no malice or bad intent but it genuinely has given me a new outlook. I'm 30 on the 10th of September and really need my life in order. I've managed to just get out of bed and go and do things without worrying where some form of depression or anxiety is taking me and, if I stick to it, it's a start.Guess I just wanted to post a positive result recently.

  30. Leona walked upstairs to her room and fell face-first onto her bed, ignoring the stab of pain from her still-healing side. Why had this ended so badly? It just wasn't fair. If she was normal, would any of this have happened? probably not said Onyx, as if reading her thoughts, but that's what happens when you are chosen to save humanity. think about all the good you have done, the lives you have saved. "But why choose me?" Leona asked. "I'm probably as far as you can get from an elsecaller." sometimes I wonder. Leona half-heartedly slapped the air where Onyx was. but it was not because of your character then, your looks, your abilities. it was for your potential. you can do great things if you let go of the chains you have put on yourself and realize your mistakes do not define you. you must realize that hope does not lie in the past, but the future. "Oh, you're a poet now?" she said, sitting up and leaning against the wall. learn to let go, leona. stop wallowing in what could have been and focus on what could be. on the future. "I..." The words were on the tip of her tongue. So close, but so far. The room brightened and she realized she was glowing. get on with it already. "I will not let my past mistakes define me, but learn from them so that I will not make them again." There was a flash, and then a large piece of cake fell to the dresser. seriously?

  33. I find the movie both subversive and great. I didn't subverted only to drama factor, but there was a philosophy and ideal trough it. Making Rey a character without great parents and making her special just for be who she is, without a blessed bloodline The only subversion that I didn't like was the death of supreme leader Snoke. Not his death itself, but we still having no explanation about where the hell did the First Order come from, both movies have failed with me, I'm guessing they will explain that trough The Mandalorian, maybe? But let's change the subject. The subversion is not the only reason why I liked TLJ, I was explaining why the subversion didn't bother me at all. The movie have other merits, let's talk about them: - The film editing is crazy good, with surgical cuts to show the same scenes from different characters point of view - Great world-building. The movie focus so much on civic people, and the battle of lesser people in The Resistance, make me feel like there is truly a war going on outside the main characters circles, and of course in all wars there is people who will have benefits from it - Bad-chull fight of Rey and Kylo, I screamed when this fanservice appeared on the screen. It was also so great directed, notice how well the camera slows down and accelerates back to highlight points that Brian wanted to highlight - Actually very good relationship development with Rey and Kylo, I find their scene giving their hands in front of the fire pit the very beautiful, give me the sense they was really going to get along - Gorgeous battles (not a good point only on this movie, cause Rogue One was marvelous too, but still a good point for me), in both space and ground. So many good moments, General - Gave to Luke some vulnerability and choice problems (his first appearance was hilarious), not because he was a bad person or master, but because all human beings can make mistakes and sometimes our mistakes costs us everything. It give him a good redemption arc in my opinion, his fight on the final act was great, showing him a truly powerful jedi master The movie have some problems, and even a plot holes created only to make the filme have some twists (why the hell Admiral Holdo didn't explained to Poe what she was keep in mind?), it's far from a perfect movie, but the excitement make me feel so dope that I voluntarily choose to ignore the problems, I do if often when watching movies I like

  34. Cassie paced in her room. Joy followed each movement a step behind, jerking to a stop when she did and reversing when she turned to pace a different way. At least, Cass assumed she was reversing. Maybe she was just going backward. Did lightspren have fronts? Regardless, she floated along almost comically; it would have been funny if Cassie hadn't been in deep thought for the last hour or so, from the moment she'd stepped in her bedroom after heading up the stairs. She knew she'd regret not sleeping eventually, but for now her exhausted contemplation was immersive enough to distract her. She was evaluating her worth. From the second James Deoven had adopted her, she'd known she wasn't going to be good enough for him. How could she be? He was a Bondsmith, a magical savior of the world with a powerful being bonded to him, someone who went around giving kids a place to stay and inventing awesome new stuff. And Cassandra Qanara, as her name used to be, was just a girl who didn't know who or what she was and could never decide on anything. She was too flighty, some of the other foster kids said, while others preferred the word inconsistent. Half the authorities thought she wandered off too much, exploring; the other half complained about how quiet she was. A few tried to get her into therapy, but it never really worked out. And then. Then she had bonded Joy, named for what Cassie hadn't had but then gotten when the spren came, and spoken those Immortal Words in a heartbeat of glory and excitement. The rush of Light; the Surge of Cohesion. Now, she had promised herself, I can do something important. Now I can prove to myself and Doc that I matter. Something she would only ever admit to herself was that she called him by the title sometimes in her head when she was alone. Having a title like that was one more piece of evidence for how much higher on the scale his value was compared to hers. But she'd been wrong. She was as useless with Radiancy as she was with anything else - her ability to use her one Surge was practically nonexistent, and her interest in doing so had died off quickly. Why keep exploring down a path that had proven itself time and time again to be a dead end? No other Ideals made their way into her head, and even though she was one of the oldest people in the house, she had silently watched the rest surpass her in skill. They learned how to fight while she learned how to fill out Washington college applications - dreading every one, unable to settle on one she wanted - storms, unable to decide on a job she wanted. Where was she going in the world? Down. That was all she could think. The others had gone out and fought Voidbringers, then come back and trained. She had participated in neither. They had all been sucked into the awful nightmare with Sha-thoexis. Cassie's only contribution had been temporarily finding Ben. Even when she'd helped her adoptive uncle find Jamie and Jamie pick up Evelyn, the fighting and evasive driving had all been done by others. And her latest, worst failure...the prom. She'd been a chaperone. She was supposed to be the one looking after them. But a crush of maybe a week had drawn away her attention, getting Shana and Ben kidnapped. As for the police interrogation, well, that was just another disaster she hadn't stopped. As the person she currently was, Cassie was useless. She sank onto her bed as her mind discovered that fact. Or, rediscovered it, more like. She knew it already, had known it and been thinking it for years. It had just gotten stronger during the past few days. Staring dully at her black computer screen, reflecting her face and the state of her soul, Cassie came to the conclusion that she had to change or leave and stop dragging everyone else down. The thought of going away forever was intolerable; change, then. But she couldn't do it on her own. The seed of an idea from earlier in the night came to her, insidious as the seeds the Voidbringers had had. The Nightwatcher had immense power. She could do things unimaginable to most, even Invested. Cass could just go and ask to be better. So simple! She jumped to her feet, rejuvenated, and booped the top of the ball of light as Joy bounced closer. "This is it," she whispered to her lightspren. "This is something I can do." Trying hard to be quiet, she crept out into the hall and to James's room, knocking lightly. @Wyndlerunner

So while writing that I got called outside several times because my mom had caught more moths; the one that instantly started banging off the walls is Dustbringer, a darker one is Skybreaker, and the one that wouldn't stop moving is Edgedancer. 40. Okay, so, the criteria for Odium's champion as far as I can tell (I'm just going to presume that the contest of champions is the climax of book 5): Must already be on Odium's side, or must be easily convinced to switch on Odium's side. Most likely has voidbinding powers, though he/she may gain the powers by switching sides. Must have a lot of (repressed, unresolved) pain that Odium can take away. Is most likely not Kaladin, Dalinar, Shallan or Venli - their story arcs involve coming closer to self-acceptance and, well, sanity. Shallan's oaths involve coming out of denial and living with her pain, Kaladin's oaths seem to be about accepting that you cannot save everyone. Dalinar has found forgiveness. Venli will probably be the same in the next book. Since the finale is Szeth's book he may or may not have reached that point of character development by that point. Nevertheless probably is either a good guy or a former good guy, because:... The fight must have emotional impact (it's the finale after all) Odium must be confident that he'll win. That might mean that Odium's champion is very powerful, OR Odium's champion will be someone that Humanity's champion cannot kill for another reason. Last but not least: Tragedy. It may be someone we don't want to die - Sanderson likes to hurt us after all. The Champion of Humanity will meanwhile be a powerful Radiant, probably one with "cool" abilities (Jasnah and Shallan's powers are very difficult to imagine in a "fight over the fate of the world" - they are not "visually appealing" enough. Maybe that sounds mean, but, well, this is a story after all). Even more important that the character has some sort of emotional connection to the champion of Odium (a final battle between, for example, Nale and Shallan wouldn't be as interesting as e.g. Moah vs. Kaladin) . So, I think it's probably one of the following: Moash vs. Kaladin: Obviously. Moash has been played up a lot as the Anti-Kaladin, their powers are very impressive, Kaladin does not want to kill Moash and it seems like Odium already has great plans for Moash.Moash already is the exact opposite of Kaladin and the battle would definitely have a strong impact on both of them. On the other hand, it is a very obvious idea. Also I think Moash will play an important role in Kaladin realising that he cannot save everyone - which I hope is going to be earlier than SA 5. And also Kaladin is the most "classic" Fantasy Protagonists - him being the Champion is almost too predictable. Szeth vs. Nale: Also possible - Szeth is very loyal to Dalinar and an obvious choice because SA 5 is his book. Nale is some sort of Mentor-ish figure to him, at least in theory, and both Nale and Szeth seem to understand and respect the other's interpretation of the Oaths. However, Szeth and Nale don't really have that much emotional impact as a fight and while Nale does in a certain way represent a counterpart to Szeth, I think it's not as interesting as some others. Kaladin vs Shallan: VERY unlikely, but possible. To be fair, it would clearly be a very emotional fight. Shallan has a lot of unresolved pain that she still somehow is in denial about. And she still has not adressed the fact that Kaladin killed her brother. So, yes, they do have the potential to fight and Shallan could theoretically maybe become Odium's champion. But - still, not very likely. It would also be a very, very bad end for both for their character arcs IMO. Dalinar vs. Some Random Voidbinder: To be honest, I think Dalinar is most likely to be the Champion of Humanity. He is one of Sanderson's favourite characters, he is the true main protagonist of SA (which originally revolved around him and Elhokar), and in my opinion has in a certain way taken over Honor's role, maybe not (yet) as a shard, but as a symbol of Honor and as the leader of Roshar's civilisations. He is also extremely powerful and the only main character (Venli aside) to have personally confronted Odium. Dalinar may face a Voidbinder controlled by Odium, while the real fight is one between him and Odium on a more philosophical level. Like he is fighting, while Odium is remembering him of his failures et cetera. But there's one possible champion of Odium who I think is more likely than all the ones above, simply because it his a character who I actually think is very probable to switch sides, and, because it's a fight where it actually seems like Odium would win. All of the above are pretty even fights, they don't necessarily have that situation in which you think "Oh no. How is he going to win THAT battle?" And, to be honest, I think the following scenario is also the most probable because it simply is the most tragic of all the possible fights:

  41. Alright, here goes nothing! Brace yourselves, Sharders, for some hastily crafted (and honestly not that good) memes of the same format!!! (Oh, and some pretty extreme spoilers so...)

  42. I finally got around to seeing Endgame yesterday, and I absolutely loved it! There were so many great moments, but I think my absolute favorite was Cap wielding Mjolnir. I wish we'd seen more of the Wakandan characters, but I get that the movie was three hours long and stuffed with characters already, so I can't complain about that too much.
