  1. An often forgotten use of Awakening is to forget. The Shardcast discussed this on the Five Scholars episode but the confusion inspired me to post my theory on this. The commonly assumed answer is a type of self awakening that creates a copied portion of the soul with Breath, that overlays on the real soul (like Forgery) and effectively excludes that memory. Well at least that was my previous theory and I think others. Go with it if you will. But as always I like the out-of-the-box ideas. We know that Awakening is unusual in that it can be powered by any investiture. (Relevant part in italics) We also know this from Vasher keeping his Divine Breath secured with Stormlight. You may already see where I'm going. It will use any investiture, including your own soul. So I propose that the Command to forget is simply a Command that makes the awakening draw on the investiture that makes up that part of the spiritweb that contains that memory, as fuel. What the Awakening achieves is irrelevant. What's relevant is that you no longer have that memory because the investiture that comprised it is eaten. Kind of like...you guessed it...hemalurgy. Well And in case you wonder how memories could be investiture, a Keeper does just that, converts memories into investiture to put into a metalmind. TLDR Awakening can feed on any investiture so the command to awaken, like excising part of the spiritweb like hemalurgy does, is a command that fuels itself with the investiture that the part of the spiritweb that stores that memory is made from. Footnote If memories are cognitive not spritual, my backup argument is that even if they're cognitive the cognitive aspect is for now made of investiture so it would be that instead of using the investiture in the spirit web as fuel you use the investiture that comprises that part of the cognitive aspect that forms the memory. Either way you're removing the memory by removing the investiture

  2. My second go at Dalinar, with an "official portrait" sort of feel. The style is based on 19th-century Russian military portraits (one by George Dawe in particular), and I used Polynesian, East Asian and Middle Eastern faces as references, to hopefully decently represent an Alethi as described in the books. This is my first time creating a portrait that's not directly referenced from an existing person, and it was a lot of fun. I'm hoping to continue with SA art, maybe expanding to characters other than my fave tight-butt Kholin (I'd love to tackle characters like Teft. Navani and Jasnah someday). Critique is totally welcome, I'm an amateur still refining and figuring things out!

  3. [I'm still busy, so no writeup for now.] Araris Valerian has died! He was an Unsnapped. GM Notes: PMs are open. The Day will end on August 10th, at 4:00 PM EST. @Lumgol and @shanerockes did not post last cycle. They will be killed by the activity filter if they do not post this cycle. Tineye Message #1: My vision is clouded. I consult the entrails of a chicken, searching for answers, but I only find more questions. Three signs are clear, yet unclear at the same time. The first, the sign of the kandra, a sign showing layers of deception and manipulation, the extent of which we may not yet realize. Where the root of the deception is, the entrails do not say. The second, a spike, a symbol of dark arts that should never be practiced. This one seems obvious - a sign of the Inquisitor, the foul abomination on their indefatigable mission. But yet, is that not also a warning to us, that in our haste and our paranoia we may ourselves commit dark deeds that should never even be spoken of? After all, it is not the Inquisitor that killed MaiKall, Variel and Voidapple. The third, a skull - you do not need an augur to say that death is on the horizon, but for who? The Inquisitor, or for those who chase him? I consult the entrails, and I leave even more confused than when I arrived. Player List:

  6. I've been re-reading Bands of Mourning, and I came across a brief comment from Wax about Telsin. He says how despite Telsin always trying to sneak away from the Village, yet when their year there was up, Wax returned (much to Edwarn's sense of victory), while Telsin stayed. Later Edwarn mentions it was Telsin that recruited him, not the other way around. So with next to no actual evidence to back it up, a part of me thinks Telsin was recruited by the Set while at the Village, which is why she stayed. Now the full on crackpot part of the theory. Wax's grandmother is the one that recruited her. The potential motivation is that the Village is all about returning to that Terris ideal, back before Harmony "fixed" everything. Sazed was also considered a "rebel" among the original Synod. Maybe the Grandmother wanting to go back to that ideal, blames Harmony and was a ranking member of the Set. She then recruits Telsin through giving her tidbits of secrets. Or potentially the Grandmother is one of the Set's "faceless immortals" and was keeping an eye out for potential recruits among the village, with other Set "faceless immortals" keep eyes and ears open in other locations as well. TLDR: Whole theory is based on one little sentence, so got barely anything to stand on, but thought it was an interesting idea.

  7. As a newcomer to the fandom, this was my first rough crack at SA fanart. Dalinar cemented himself as my absolute favourite of the series after I finished Oathbringer. This was pretty quick with little research or references (especially with regards to racial traits) so a lot of details are probably off, but I'm happy with the overall feel of it.

  8. Did we ever find out which ledger Bard had? Was it one he started with, or one he bought from the store? Evidence suggests it's the latter, as there's no particular reason Bard wouldn't have used a ledger if he started with one. You couldn't be attacked as only Drake knew you were going to be the target. This cycle would be the point where elim!Drake attacks village!you, yet this would be a foolish plan as merely passing you a whiskey would prevent you from dying and allow you to scan Bard and catch three elims. Redirecting your ledger target and then killing them would be a far more effective strategy. It's still best to make sure you're actually protected by a whiskey though. If your ledger target does end up dead, somebody will buy the ledger currently in the shop and (if they're a villager) use it to scan Bard, so even this last plan, and the 'all four of you are evil' scenario, would only work if the elims have been sitting on a dagger this whole time, have sufficient money to do all this bribing with enough left to redirect an item and buy a specific item(the ledger) from the store, and have an as-yet-uninvolved elim to 'scan' Bard as village. At this point, we're in major tinfoil territory as opposed to the far simpler option of Drake and Fura being villagers, and probably Striker/Bard with them. Up until last cycle, there was only ever one dagger available for sale, and Haelbarde bought it. Last cycle, there were two daggers that nobody bothered to go for. Bribes are expensive though, and there may have been a money shortage. If village!Alvron was involved in a dagger-passing conspiracy with the elims, it's unclear that he was willing to exploit it in the village's favour. Alvron at some point told Hael about receiving Snip's dagger. As Hael claimed to have a dagger but didn't pass it on, Alvron would have known that Hael was either a villager or the elims had no intention of actually honouring the deal. Killing Snip would have threatened the deal, but Hael apparently wasn't told that Alvron had reason to believe anyone passing him daggers was evil. I'm probably just confusing myself here; Snip and Hael should be better able to explain this. To be fair, most of your argument for not lynching Joe was based on a serious misunderstanding about how the survivor role worked. @Kidpen evidently read that section of the rules more thoroughly. There were arguments for not lynching constables that Kidpen appears to have missed, though notably the two main people who argued against a constable lynch (Drake and Striker) turned around and failed to hammer Gaea. Kidpen never mentioned which constable he might have supported a lynch on, though it's probably too late to ask. We never did get Kidpen's opinion on Alvron's claims, and it isn't too late to ask.

  10. I'm actually more inclined to agree with Snipexe on this one - from a meta perspective, the level to which you're pushing for Drake's appointment is kind of mayorish - with the possibility of the game being less fun because of it. I don't mind voting on Drake, since I know they're a villager, but I feel like it could be crossing a line to push too hard for others to do the same. I know this is maybe hypocritical coming from me - I made a similar statement at the end of turn 3 to Drake about if Rae dies, but I was disappointed with Burnt and El dying early, and didn't want Rae to die too by vote manipulation, as well as being a very spontaneous decision in the madness that was going on then. People play SE for all kinds of reasons, and focusing too hard on optimal play can do more harm than good.

Here's a little sketch of what is, without a doubt, the cutest thing in the Cosmere, Vasher's awakened lifeless squirrel, Fallen Rope (that's the command phrase, so might as well call this little cutie that). Awakened with the command "Run around. Make noise. Bite things which aren't me." I think Zahel would be great at kids' birthday parties.

  14. So when I found out that someone bought movie rights for a couple of Brandon Sanderson's books I was in shock. Immediately, I looked online searching for information about it. That was about a year ago, and now I've checked again and from what I saw, there hasn't been any updates on it, does anybody know what's going on there, if they abandoned it, or what? I heard they were trying to make the Stormlight Archive in to a movie, and once upon a time someone bought Mistborn rights, but never did anything with it. Any help?

  18. 4 years ago Karina walked down the sidewalk and breathed in the arid Texas air. The sidewalk beneath her feet was cracked, but not unreasonably so and thus she continued walking on it. She waved at some of the people walking by, most of which waved back or offered some cheerful greeting in return. She halted when she recognized a minor Epic wearing a leather jacket and a somewhat stereotypical cowboy hat. He had a revolver holstered at his waist, and cowboy boots with spurs. He looked at her, and she quickly got out of his way but also prepared to grab her rifle and fire. His name is Shattershot, I think? He's one of Boombox's thugs, and he has the power to... she frantically racked her brain for information - to shatter bullets in midair as if they were frag grenades. Also enhanced reflexes. A good shot to the back of his head should take him down as long as he doesn't see it coming. He walked on past, and she watched him as he walked past, itching to take a shot at him and figuring another dead Epic could not hurt. Eventually, she let out a quiet sigh, turned around, and kept walking. Trying to kill him here in public would draw too much attention and almost certainly blow her cover. She still had a family to look after, and it was no secret as to where her mother and sister lived. Regardless, she couldn't help but feel like a coward as she approached her apartment building. Karina entered the the complex, waved at the woman at the front desk, and took the elevator to the nineteenth floor. She walked down the hallway and inserted her key into the lock on the door to her room, twisted it, and pushed the door open. Their apartment was of a decent size. Karina walked through the doorway into the sitting room and looking forward towards the kitchen, looking for her sister. For a split second, she thought she saw her sitting at the kitchen table with her head in her hands. Karina blinked and then her sister was walking towards her. Serena wore a loose-fitting sports jersey and stained white shorts. Her black hair was tied up in a ponytail, and she folded her arms and stopped at arms length away from her sister, frowning. Karina hadn't noticed her sister's ill mood, and she casually took her rifle off her back, setting it down on a small table near the wall. Still oblivious, she turned to her sister, rambling, "Hey Serena, how're you doing? You know Davy? The Australian guy? He apparently got a real bona fide baseball for you." She leaned closer conspiratorially. "I think he likes you!" Serena scowled. "Where have you been?" The older sister replied offhandedly as she opened up a cabinet to retrieve a bowl, "Oh, at work. Moved some boxes around, worked with some weapons, you know the drill. Need to go back in about an hour, but I figured I might as well spend some time with you and catch up with Mama first. How was your day?" Karina found an oatmeal packet in the small pantry and prepared it to eat. She'd never told her sister nor mother she was a Reckoner, and didn't really plan to. It was just too dangerous both for them and her. Serena hadn't moved from where she was standing. She flatly replied, "Archangel got pissed off and blasted the marketplace. I'm out of work for at least a month." Karina finally processed that something was off, and turned back to look at her younger sister, and gasped. "Calamity, you look awful! What the sparks happened?" Her forehead had a very noticable, very purple bruise just above her right eye, and her entire body was splattered with dried blood. One of her legs looked badly charred, and her hair was slightly singed as well. Karina immediately walked towards her sister, exclaiming, "I can't believe you're still standing! You must've lost so - " Serena stiffly interrupted, "If you're worried about the blood, don't. It's not mine. Mostly it's Caden's and Julia's, they're the ones that pissed the sparking Epic off." She winced as her older sister poked gently at the bruise above her eye. Serena irritably brushed her sister's hand off of her face, then suddenly started shouting. "Where have you been the past three weeks? Mama's been worried about you and I've had to take care of her by myself! What in the world have you been doing?" "Three weeks? Surely it couldn't have been that long..." She trailed off. Karina realized with a start that she hadn't seen her sister this riled up in long time. She'd known her sister to be a rather reserved, cautious person, always trying to avoid offending whoever she was talking to. Now, she was absolutely furious. And not undeservedly so, I guess... Three weeks? "Yes it clearly could've been that long, because it has! Answer my question! What have you been doing recently that's so important that you let your sister get burned and beaten by some random Epic?" Karina defensively replied, "Well, it's very important but I can't really tell - " "Oh it's so important. More important than your mother and sister," Serena interrupted. She snorted derisively. Sarcastically, she continued, "Well don't let me stop you. Go ahead, with your secret meetings and your stupid friends. They're clearly too good for us." Her tone changed again, back to seething rage. "For that matter, even when you were here, you really weren't, were you? Always looking at a stupid book or working on your stupid sparking rifle." She walked over to said rifle and picked it up. "When was the last time you really even talked to us? Not just the basic banal greetings, really talked to us, asked us what we thought and our sparking hopes and dreams and whatever else?" Karina started to wonder if something was really wrong. Her sister rambled on for another minute or so, and eventually Karina interrupted, "Do you want me to leave? You're clearly worked up and - " Evidently, that was the wrong thing to say. Serena snarled, and suddenly Karina hit the ground, dazed from her sister's surprisingly strong left hook. I didn't see that coming... that's strange, some part of her brain felt. Most of it, however, was preoccupied with the dull pain in her cheek. Karina made an effort to sit up and leaned against a nearby chair, then groaned as she felt a vicious headache coming on. She forced a laugh, though it sounded more like coughing. "Sparks, you hit hard. That'll leave a mark." Serena was sitting on the nearby couch, her head in her hands. The younger girl looked absolutely miserable. The SKS-45 lay on the table in front of her, forgotten. Her older sibling shakily rose to her feet, then sat back down beside her. Silence reigned for a couple minutes, as the two siblings simply sat next to each other. Karina's cheek slowly turned purple. Eventually, Serena slowly sat up and broke the silence. "I'm sorry. That... that was... I'm sorry. I don't..." She made an incomprehensible gesture where she clenched her and unclenched her hands repeatedly and waved them around in circles. "I mean..." Karina tried to smile comfortingly. "It's okay. I'm sorry too. I guess that you really do have a point." Serena frantically gestured and started to speak, but her sister held up a hand and continued. "I haven't been spending much time with you, come to think of it. I've just been really busy. It's just that - " Serena finally interrupted, "No no no, it's fine, I know what you do pays pretty well and we need to to pay for the apartment and for Mama - " Now it was Karina who interrupted, " - but that's no excuse for me to go and ignore my family." She looked at her younger sister, and felt a pang of sadness seeing her sister so miserable. She looked up at the clock, and realized with alarm that she only had about 20 minutes left until she had to head back to base. She brushed aside her concern temporarily; right now the important thing was patching up her relationship with her sister. Said sister frowned, then asked a question she'd asked likely dozens of times before. "What do you do, anyway? You need your rifle for it, so I thought it might be a protection job, but then again..." She shrugged. "...I can't figure it out." Karina considered the question. In the past, she'd always tried to dodge the question, usually by giving out specific details about what she'd done that day. She tried not to lie to her sister if she could, though it was sometimes inevitable. Today though, she had a strong impulse to tell the truth. I'm a Reckoner. One of those shadowy people in the shadows that kills Epics across the Fractured States. "I'm a Reckoner. One of those shadowy people in the shadows that kills Epics across the Fractured States." she quietly answered. Karina mentally slapped herself. Serena's eyes widened. She opened her mouth, then closed it. Something went through her eyes - Fear? Surprise? Admiration? - and her face grew pale. "You've got to be kidding me." Karina immediately considered pretending that she was, in fact, joking. She realized she couldn't lie to her sister, and instead turned back to her sister, whispering, "Please don't tell anyone. Not for anything. It's really dangerous both for you and Mama to know this. Please be careful, I shouldn't have told you. The gang believes that my family doesn't know... dammit how am I going to break it to them?" She got up and paced around the small space, her headache forgotten. Strapping on her rifle, she turned back towards her sister, her voice softening. "Look, I've got a job in just a couple days. After that, we'll probably have a break for a while. I'll find a way to tell the team later, but I'll take a break from that stuff for a while." Her voice quickened, and she was on the edge of rambling. "We'll have some time together, I'll tell Mama, maybe I'll really let you meet the rest of the - " Karina paused and took a deep breath. "Just don't tell anyone, okay?" Serena had composed herself. Her face was unreadable. She nodded. Karina looked back at her sister, then opened the apartment door and walked through.

  19. While I whole-heartedly agree we need a governor, I don't have the same trust in Drake you have, @Furamirionind. Your reasoning that they'd have no reason to pass a ledger outside the elim circle is flawed. The reason to pass it outside is because if the team does include Drake, they were basically told they must or else. If there's another teammate we don't know about, passing it to them would reveal that hidden link. I admit, the theory is unlikely, but I'm having a difficult time trusting any of you, Striker, or Drake at the moment. I don't think voting for or against Drake is alignment indicative, as there would be plenty of reasonable villagers who just don't agree with clearing Drake. Hopefully I'll have some time today to look into people outside the main focus so far, such as @Haelbarde, @Hemalurgic Headshot, @Kidpen, and @Butt Ad Venture (especially for saying we should give up in electing a governor...)

  20. ...I dont understand where you are getting that from. Drake is a villager. And therefore, we should vote on him for governor. The only people who dont want a villager Governor are the elims. Edit: @Young Bard I think Joe probably assumed the village would be going crazy over the daggers, and through that, harm the village both by killing mostly villagers, but also handing the daggers to the elims.

It depends entirely upon their reasoning for Shattering him/her/it, but if I agreed and joined them in ending Adonalsium, I'd probably pick (out of the Shards we know for sure) Cultivation - or possibly Autonomy, because it just sounds fun to be a hive mind. Humor is subjective, I found both it and the below meme funny. I'm going to reiterate the warning of "don't spam or double post", since it's still been going on. I think the concept for this thread is interesting, though, so I'll probably be back.

  22. I love this! I would caution against making these sections too long in your writing (if these are intended to be integrated into a larger story), but you could easily scatter several of these introspective scenes throughout a novel, without them being overbearing or distracting from the plot. I think this is an intriguing way to share perspective on a character's mindset, and love the madman's "logic" shown here.

  23. Just when Aylitha jumped someone grabbed her. Her mind sped up, time seeming to slow down. Who was it? Only one other soldier left, others should be dead. Are they? Is it a soldier? My flesh, close. Infected them. Must be the leader. She felt heat arising behind her. Fire, beam. She thought. On instinct she started reabsorbing her body, but she wasn't fast enough. The beam pierced through her chest, heating quickly eating away at the rest of her body. She dissolved from both her center as well as the ends of her body, flame at one side and absorption at the other. In less than a second all that laid in front of the leader was a large pile of ashes. Back where the corpse of one of the grunts laid the flower on their neck started blooming, growing into a new body. The grunt slowly stood up as well, moving clumsily, uncoordinated. While the Aylitha's body laid on the ground reforming the grunt rushed at the leader, barely managing to keep their balance. At the same time a different grunt slowly started standing up as well, spike still piercing their face.

  24. I thought that the calls were all done online now? But, yes, essentially, we open a document or letter, that informs that person where they have been called to serve. In this case, a calling is where members of the church believe that the Lord has asked them to serve a mission. Kind of like when someone in a book feels like they have been called to complete a quest, except the calling isn't revealed to the person going on the quest, instead, it's revealed to men who we believe are prophets. Congrats! Keep learning Japanese! After your mission if you speak fluent spanish, fluent japanese, and fluent english, you will have lot's of great opportunities in life! It is definitely not one of those buildings in CA from when spain still owned it. At least not in the sense we are using it. Ethan and Aon explained it pretty well, but let me just add a bit more. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, (Often refered to as the LDS church, or Mormon church) one of our core beliefs is the importance of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and inviting others to live it's teachings with us. For reasons difficult to explain simply, we believe that the Lord has called all worthy, able, young men to serve a mission, and has opened the invitation to others as well. Even though we believe that all young men have been called, it is still their right to accept or reject the call, and this is done by those who are willing to serve fill out an application, and wait to see where they have been asked to serve. Then the missionary will leave their home, for two years, where they are expected to abide by the rules that were explained in basic detail prior to their leaving, and explained in more detail, once you actually arrive. The missionary usually follows a strict-ish schedule where they search for those willing to listen to their message, and preach the gospel to those people. The missionary should always be with a companion 24/7, except bathroom breaks and stuff like that, who is there to help share the message, make sure the other abides by the rules, as well as for safety purposes. Basically extreme buddy system. But I don't want to go into way too much detail here, as that is not the purpose of this thread. Everything has a place and purpose. I hope I've answered most of the questions you might have "What is a mission" "Why go" "How is it set up" "what is it's purpose." But if you have any more questions about the set up of a mission, feel free to PM me, I've served a mission too (in Chile), and I held various different positions within the mission's structure. (Don't worry, I won't preach anything to you unless you want to, I'll just help you answer the questions about what a mission, because from my experience, there are many people who are relatively curious about missionaries(Men with white shirts and black plaques on their chest), but don't ask questions, because they are afraid that they will be preached to.) ---------------- Anyway, back to the thread.... I win!

The Elendel Daily. 8th of Doxil, 244 With the recent Arrest of Senator Binks on charges of Blackmail, Fraud, and Conspiracy, Citizens from all octants have been asking the question, who else is involved? Certainly Senator Binks could not have acted alone, as the sheer amount of funds already revealed to have been spent in bribes are worth more than Bink’s net worth. 29. So I am not sure how far fetched this theory/question is or whether it is a silly one. I am on my second reading of the Stormlight Archives as I realized I missed a lot of things during my first reading. Now we know that Brandon Sanderson has a habit of foreshadowing a lot of major reveals in the books. I was wondering whether Tien's fascination with rocks and the manner in which Rock got his original name (after a special rock that his father discovered a few days before his birth) could be a foreshadowing to something special in the series later.

  31. Hi all! I finished Oathbringer after a long break between it and WoR, and it really sucked me back into SA (which I've liked for a couple years). I haven't been so into a book series for a while, enough so that I had to come register here. I've never been great at understanding the nitty-gritty of complicated fantasy, so my main form of contribution will probably be the occasional fanart, rather than any deep discussion. I've already submitted a couple of paintings to the gallery (Dalinar is my fave in case you can't tell.....) I'm looking forward to getting familiar with you all, and making more art!

  32. My long-promised analysis of Elandera: In general, Elandera is very aware of the possibility of elim vote manips. She puts up a lot of vote tallies and also mentions how vote manips can be used as a way to trace back to the elims. In her third post, Elandera defends Ark, who we now know is village. However, next cycle, she attacks him here: So far, Elandera has a pretty good record. She attacked/voted on Lum and Gaea, and mostly defended Ark and me. Eventually she also voted on Alv, too. Elandera clearly didn't like her options during C3, and tried to move her vote off of Alv, but then moved it back on. I think if she was an elim, she would've pushed harder to move the lynch on Alv, and definitely wouldn't have gone with it in the beginning. See here: Then here: This was early enough that without Elandera's support, the Alv lynch might not have took off. Overall, this looks very villagery. I'm not sure what to think of Elandera's attacks on Striker. It looks a lot like tunneling to me, but she has been pretty accurate so far. I'd take a look at him, but I have a feeling that my time is better spent looking at the supposed other links in the Bard-Striker-Drake-Fura circle. I'd be happy to support Elandera for governor.

  33. Even the really big Splinters left behind (like the Stormfather) are still 'Honor-flavored' despite the Shard they're associated with has been Shattered. Splinters can (and often do) have an Intent that's their own in addition to what they get from the Shard but they're still part of that Shard's collective power. Also, Odium has not ensured that the power can't be merged again, though he wants to keep anyone from picking them up again..Brandon has said that Splintering is not permanent so whatever he does can be reversed, just not easily. What Odium has basically done is made it very very hard for someone to pick up the power and Ascend which is the best he can do. Devotion and Dominion's powers are merging and we know that what's happened on Sel is something Odium didn't anticipate or want, but he didn't know enough at the time to avoid it. Honor could be reformed (and there's a popular theory that Dalinar will do it) which Odium acknowledges since he's realized he didn't do a thorough enough job the first time. Ambition is the only question mark since that Shard left large chunks of its power in the Threnodite System but was actually killed somewhere else, so there's multiple concentrations of power and any attempt to reform it might result in a weaker Shard or a lot of work to try and consolidate those multiple chunks of power across several systems.

Hrathen sends Fyorn off to study at a new Monastery so he can serve the empire and Shu Dereth again in the future. He later comes back and assassinates Hrathen as he first task in the Rathbore Monastery. ...Or the Silver crossbow bolt in SFSitFoH. The point is Brandon uses Chekhov's gun as a writing tool in his works.

  37. I actually already asked Striker this in our PM. As he is at work, I'll say what he told me. (I'll also tag @StrikerEZ to make certain I'm not putting words in his mouth) But basically it's just that he picked someone semi-random. He has been interacting with Lum a lot on Discord (Yay for MTG!), and she was the most recent post when he submitted his action. Wow, yeah. We are mindmelding a lot right now. lol.

  38. There's only one destination. They leave or they stay. Wax isn't a Cognitive Shadow because he was resurrected prior to the point of separation and the Beyond. The "conversion to Investiture" is Brandon's take on the Ship of Theseus debate. The soul, over time or through a massive influx (Ala a shard or Kel and Rashek with the Well) is replaced or petrified with Investiture. Is it a copy? If it is in all ways the same thing but the composition has been replaced with something else, is it the same person? The "soul" in this sense is a debatable thing. As I said either there is something else that goes beyond other than Investiture, or nothing does. Considering that we see CS choose to leave, I'd have to think that whatever extra remains. But it's completely up to reader interpretation. I'm not sure I understand the question? What more do they need than the potential for eternal existence and, given the proper knowledge and materials and/or natural mechanisms, the chance at rebirth?

  40. The Alleystorm was at its full height now, and Lita's mind and body strained against its own limits. She was sensation, every nerve strung taut and plucked at once. From behind her, Lita could hear the Phoenix shrieking in agony, the wind rushing against its fiery form as it plummeted towards the ground. She was grateful for the deep shadow of this alleyway, though to her it was bright as full noon - brighter, even. Her eyes watered, the sting compounded and layered over the rest of her senses, just another note in the symphony echoing through her. The city was burning, screaming, dying. Lita could hear the blood running through her own body, the pulse of her heart, the microscopic contractions of her facial muscles when she blinked. Tin was a bonfire within her, a white-hot forge fire flooding her body, her mind, her soul, commanding her to burn. The smallest whisper of caution tickled her mind, the fear of flaring too high for too long. Everyone knew the dangers of too much tin, the price that would be paid if she pushed her body too far. But this...how could she give up this? With this much perception, there was no secret that could hide from her. She was sight, was hearing, was touch. The woman before her, this Deteca, was merely a distraction, a small piece of the larger whole. Rusts, this entire city was but a scratch on the surface. There was so much more to discover, to learn, to uncover. Lita turned her head a fraction to look at Mac, then the Stranger. The limit, and the limitless. Both had moved through this world of their own accord, but so differently. Mac would advise caution, restraint. And the Stranger? Did he not also warn her against recklessness? Lita was balanced on the knife-point, a dancer in the storm around her, that liminal space of the doorway, the endless chasm that echoed between heartbeats. She remembered the golden script that had crawled and burned along the floor, the walls, the ceiling of her quarters back in the Alleys. The language of reality, the truth that she had only ever glimpsed before in fleeting whispers. I still have one vial left, she thought, fingers tracing the bottle with a fevered hunger. Here, in the storm, who knew what a true flare would let her see and hear? And the cost... did it matter? In her pocket, the Coin pulsed with a low heat. A warning, or an encouragement? Both? What are you hungry for? Her voice was softer than a whisper, the word a phantom shadow, a thought who's soul had dripped down the back of Lita's throat and onto her tongue. "Everything," she breathed, and flared tin.

  41. The Rhythms are the Rosharan version of a Spiritual phenomenon that permeates the cosmere. For why humans can't hear them but singers can, it's sort of the same type of question as why can singers grow carapace but humans can't? It's how the story is written. Humans don't have the spiritual or genetic ability to hear them. The humans don't hear the Rhythms in the CR. They hear the beads clacking together, in what seems to be a Rhythm. It's like how they can hear the singers speaking or singing to the Rhythms, but not know what they are.

  44. The biggest problem I see is just the sheer implausibility of it. While it's an interesting theory, and fits the facts, I have to wonder how Nazh, a Threnodite, would end up with a knife that could only be created by someone of the Ninth Heightening, and unless an easier method was found, using 1000 Breaths? And why would he so easily give it to someone on a seemingly impossible mission? Additionally, the knife appears to have no special effects. There's no talking, no draining Investiture, and the knife doesn't seem to have Nightblood's triple-realm cutting effect. If the knife didn't talk to Kelsier, why would Nazh think it would talk to a random Scadrian during the Second Era? This theory is interesting, but ultimately, I find too many holes in it.
