  1. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

I had a lot of fun letting my imagination run wild with how else a common skyeels would show up in people's culture: What would skyeel be like as food? How big is a Common Skyeel anyway? Is it steak-size? What would a high-end restaurant premium cut skyeel steak look like? This skyeel bun is inspired by a braided dragon bread my girlfriend and I made recently. All it needs are a pair of wing fins, and some cookie back fins, and there’s a skyeel! Where else would a commonly known animal like the skyeel show up in people culture? Toys, of course! This is a simple wooden toy, lovingly hand-carved by a grandfather for his grand children.

  2. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

I want to design more than just cool looking creatures. These skyeels are part of a world where people of all species live. They must have a long history of interaction – relationship – with people. So I start to think about how skyeels might be edible, hunted, ‘fished’, with flying baits, of course, since they aren’t fishes that swim under water.

  3. From the album: The Longest Thread (Misadventures)

So, I found a cool picture of a dress online and thought, "Hey, this looks like something Star would wear," so I drew it. I wanted something a bit more though and @BringerofShadows was being belligerent on TLPW so I figured, why not? Anyway, I've never drawn a marionette before, but it was fun and it looks halfway decent if you ignore the legs. I tried to make it look a bit cartoony and I'm ultimately pretty happy with what it came out as.

  4. Era leaned most of her weight on Astick’s bony shoulder as she carefully climbed onto the wooden crate. She settled herself, then accepted her cane as Astick handed it up. “Bless you sir.” Astick grinned a toothless grin and gave a little bow as he backed away. Era grasped the cane tightly before her, and stood ramrod straight. “We’re at an important crossroads here, so you young’uns listen up.” She waited as people began to quiet, elbowing others into paying attention. “Luthadel is beset by enemies, both on the outside and the inside. Lekal’s goons are running around in the Survivor’s mist, killing us left and right, and we have a group of Rogue Mistborn trying to kill them, mostly by killing any of us that even might be taking Lekal’s coin. We all have a few people we suspect have their pockets full, but that’s no longer the issue. We have to find the most dangerous of our enemies first, as they’ll be killing us the sooner. So I’d like to call a vote.” She raised her cane and pointed at three people. “Astick, Doma, and Varuun.” Astick, the nice old man started, and mouthed “but I helped you.” Varuun carefully made his way towards her, then stood with hands clasped, watching attentively. Doma leaned against the wall, making no moves. “I’m fairly certain, given everything we’ve seen since Lekal’s arrival, that one of those three is Zane the Mad. Does anyone disagree?” Amid the low rumbling of assent, Laila, the Noblewoman who had been so outspoken against Elend, stood up on her own table with the help of a servant. Era cursed under her breath. Anyone but her, please, let me die of old age before I hear that pretentiousness again. “I agree that the Mistborn must be hunted. And I would like to direct everyone’s attention to Varuun.” Everyone looked at the man, who looked back stoically. “Everyone has seen Zane the Mad before. He was used as a messenger when our ‘noble King’s Father arrived to assume his place. And yet, none of us can find a man who looks like Zane anymore.” She pointed dramatically at the man again, emphasizing her words. “This man can change his appearance faster than anyone I know. I once saw him duck into an alley, and come out with a different color of skin! He’s a master of disguise! Far more likely to be Zane than Astick!” “Hear hear!” Astick called out, shaking his cane at Varuun. Huh. That was actually somewhat logical, if hard to verify. “Well, I tend to agree. Varuun needs to go.” Snip and Makail both yelled out their agreement. Varuun cocked his head. “Why do you lie to defend Astick so much Laila? Are you so desperate to kill me? Did you not hear the excellent arguments posed by the honorable Era?” He turned and nodded to the old Terriswomen. “Your argument is correct madam. Zane is the greatest threat to everyone in this city, and out. Killing me would only hasten his slaughter of everyone in this building.” Era hesitated as the man’s eyes burned into her. But before she could say anything, Astick spoke up. “Laila is right, you heard her, Varuun is extremely suspicious, and needs to be killed before he kills anymore of us!” Era looked back and forth between the two of them. Varuun nodded his head, directing her gaze to Doma, still leaning against the wall, not intervening whatsoever. She made a snap decision. “It’s Doma. It’s definitely Doma.” Varuun turned to the room at large. “Doma is Zane everyone. Aname, Ford, will you help me restrain him?” Ford looked to Era, who nodded. He stepped up. “I will. We will deal with You and Astick later.” Aname slowly shook her head. “I think it’s Laila, I think she’s Vin. That’s why she dislikes Elend so much, she abandoned him.” Makail stepped up in her place, ignoring her words. “I’ll help.” The three strode purposefully towards Doma, who continued to not move. Ford and Makail both lunged forward, each grabbing an arm, Varuun was a step behind, and grabbed the man’s neck, slamming him backwards into the wall. The two dimensional body fell away, leaving each of them awkwardly holding an appendage. Varuun tilted the papery head of Doma sideways, then looked around the room, mouth agape. “What, what is this?” Ford knelt, and picked up the thin body. “It weighs practically nothing! Was he ever even here?” “Well no one just stand around!” Era’s shout snapped them to attention. “Don’t let him survive! Go out there and find him!” A Divine Image Cruelty has a human heart, And Jealousy a human face. Terror the human form divine, And Secrecy the human dress. I know you checked this Fura The human dress is forgéd iron, The human form a fiery forge, The human face a furnace sealed, The human heart its hungry gorge. —William Blake Rathmaskal was lynched, but survived! 6. Hey everyone! New to the shard here. So far I've read Stormlight archive, Rithmatist, Reconers, Mistborn, Legion, Skyward, a few novellas, and probably some more that I can't remember right now. So, I wanted to join the shard, and I looked at a few posts, and I kept seeing things about cookies. Cookies? What are the cookies for? Do I get a cookie?

  7. Day 2- To Unleash the Light Beyond Steel touched down in his Fresa. That had been a touch and go battle, and he was mildly frustrated with how disorganized it had been. If they had just been a little smarter in who they attacked, they could have destroyed more than just half of the krell, and finished off those that limped away. But the threat was gone, for now anyway. Now to face the backlash for their perceived incompetence. Sure enough, as Steel got out of his cockpit, he saw Ironsides storming into the hangar. She walked right over to a group of pilots who had never even gotten off the ground. "CADCOM! INBRED! STRIKER! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!" She screamed. Steel decided it would be a good idea to get over there and intervene. CadCom stammered. "I'm so sorry, commander, if you talk to the doctor I had a medical reason for not flying today-" "YOU THINK I GIVE A DAMNATION ABOUT MEDICAL REASONS? ALL OF YOU ARE STRIPPED OF YOUR RIGHT TO PILOT A PLANE, RIGHT NOW!" She interrupted. Steel slid between Ironsides and the pilots who had failed to take flight. "Commander, I think you should give them a chance. We don't have many pilots right now, and we can't afford to just kick them out willy nilly. We do need to get rid of the rebels, but this isn't the way to do it." Ironsides breathed in, her anger visibly dimming at seeing Steel. She spoke in a more quiet voice to the pilots behind Steel. "You're lucky one of the most respectable pilots under my command spoke in your defense, or I would have your badges right now. As it is, I'll happily see you court-martialed if you do ANYTHING suspicious. If this happens again, I will not be so forgiving." With that, Ironsides walked out of the hangar. The pilots breathed a sigh of relief, and Steel turned to them. "You better not screw up like that again. I know you probably had your reasons, but even I only have so much pull with Ironsides. Don't let it happen again, or I won't be able to help you. And we needed your help up there. There were 3 krell ships that only just scraped away. If we had had you, they each would have gone down. And maybe we wouldn't have lost Yawn to a swarm of Krell and the rebels commanding our own bases turrets." He walked away, leaving them to stew. He really hoped he hadn't just burned through whatever pull he had with Ironsides. He suspected at this point, he wouldn't be able to get his medical leave until the rebels had been purged. Hopefully today they could actually get something done about that. On the bright side, no ships had gone down besides Poco-6. A few were scratched up, but that was nothing they couldn't fix before the next battle with the Krell. Hopefully, next time they could just be a bit better about finishing them off. ____________ Devotary was shot down in Poco-6, and has been kicked out of the military! They were a Pilot. PMs are now closed. The lynch is now open. Remember, shields reset each night turn. Everything not indicating damage taken is at full health and shields were not brought down. Starting lynch count: CadCom (1) StrikerEZ (1) Walin (1) Remember to submit a ship assignment. Priority is given to those who request the same ship they used the previous night. Remember you can also submit actions to repair ships.

  8. Storms @Paranoid King! I'd have trouble competing with any of your roasts, let alone three of them at once! Seriously, hats off to you, dude! But that's not to say I'm going to just give up. I'll still go down swinging! So without further ado, Here's Galladon! And with that, we have all four submissions for the Semi-Final Round, which can mean only one thing: It's time to VOTE!

  10. From the album: Natural History of Roshar

This is the skyeel from Roshar, with much artistic licenses added because I was having too much fun visualizing them! It started out as just skyeel, which I decided to expanded into three species to have some more species diversity, and a more natural feeling when populating the world, like a city park would have pigeons, sparrows and starlings. Besides the Common Skyeel, there is the Greater Skyeel, and Lesser Skyeel, because I am great at naming things like that. The Common Skyeel has a difficult balance to strike – it needs to not compete in coolness with the Greater Skyeel, which is set at boss level, but also not as drab and blending-in as the Lesser Skyeel despite it being the most … well, commonly seen around by people! Like a seagull, but cooler, but not too cool. For that reason Common Skyeel remains the only design that has the same color, pattern, and size between female and male. It is also the last of the three I designed, but somehow ended up being the standard to which I adjust the other two Skyeel designs to make the Greater fittingly boss-like, and the Lesser accordingly humble. That seemingly little egg there took me a while to settle on! So I must ramble about it here. Skyeel is a fish, that flies in air, taking up the same niche as birds do on Earth. So does it still lay eggs? What shape and surface if they're exposed to the elements? How does the baby break out? Does skyeel birth live pups like some sharks do? What is the morphology - the baby looks exactly like adult but miniature (sail fish), baby looks partially like adult (birds), or a complete metamorphosis (tadpole/frog)? When everything is possible, it's impossible to just settle on one. But I had to, so I did, otherwise my life cannot go on... There are a total of 6 pages, and I'm posting them here in set of 3 so as to not spam so much. If they're small or blurry, you can see bigger resolution on my Artstation

  11. Lord Ruler, it was hard to play another role. Vin was almost glad Aname had finally spotted her. Being Valette for Kelsier was one thing, but she got to make up her own character. Being Laila Tourange? Vin had to contort her personality so much it was going to be hard to drop the pretentious air. Playing Lady Tourange by day and going out with Zane at night left her exhausted. Exhausted and a failure. Elend had sent her to use his brother to help the budding empire. She'd been so close too. She and Zane had finally tracked down the infiltrators, but then the common people had turned on them. They had decided they'd rather kill those willing to kill to protect them than those who were actively killing innocents. The hypocrisy still rampant in Luthadel was now apparent. And Vin detested it. She knew she could never trust anyone. How often had Reen warned her? Never trust anyone else. Not even the leaders of the community. Not skaa. Not noble. Not merchant. Only Vin could be trusted. And now the town would fall to the infiltrators. Lekal would win the war before he even arrived. Kelsier, why? If he had been here, he'd have been able to save the city. Laila was in love with the Lord Ruler, but Vin loved the first man to ever love her. But she'd failed. Vin had failed this city. Vin pulled off the wig and extravagant dress she'd worn as Laila and threw on her mistcloak as night approached. She jumped out into the mists, leaving Luthadel in the shadows. Here in the mists, she was home. With Zane, she'd be safe. Luthadel held no hope for her and Elend kept no promises. She was done with the people of the Lord Ruler's corrupted empire. They had failed her.

  12. Voidus looked over the rapidly emptying Alley. Denizens had quietly begun to leave, either to return to important experiments or to prepare for what was about to happen. Mac was coordinating their intelligence, taking in reports and collating the information together before dispensing it to those who needed it. The Stranger had returned to some of his labs to check up on experiments, and a lucky thing, the last thing they needed to deal with was a rogue byproduct of his research into temporal anomalies wandering the city. And what do I do? Voidus thought as an area of space was left around him. We're taking the slow and steady approach for now so this isn't the time for grandstanding or elaborate displays. The other Denizens gave him a wide berth as they moved, many giving nods of respect, a few younger denizens straight up bowing to him. When did that start happening? He wondered for perhaps the thousandth time. He'd never made any pretenses of godhood, never asked for that kind of behaviour. But slowly it had grown over time, leaving him apart from the others. Well, Mac's coming along nicely and the Stranger's back at least. The thought gave him some comfort. But this still doesn't solve the problem of what to do. He could still feel it, that slight wayward pull against the Void, the sense of wrongness that might threaten everything. With a suddenness of movement that seemed to startle his surroundings, Voidus began striding along the Alley. As he moved he took out a small, slender metallic spike and gave it a little twirl. Checking on the Worldspike. Voidus signed to Mac as he vanished. Let me know if anything changes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Appearing in a nearby Alley, Voidus took a deep breath of air. He usually preferred the closed off spaces of the Alleys or the darkness of his sanctum, but with this irritation hanging over him something drove him to action rather than his usual deliberate restraint. It felt good to be outside again for the first time in over a year. Walking up to the barrier, he inspected it carefully, running one hand smoothly against the air a short distance away and sketching a few Aons out of piercingly bright light.

  13. So a bear walks into a restaurant, and walks over to a booth and sits down. The waiter came up and asked what the bear wanted. ”Alright,” said the bear, “I’ll take a burger and some fries.” ”Why the big pause?” The waiter asked. ”Oh these?” The bear said holding his paws up. “I’ve had them all my life!!”

  14. The question Went to a supermaket to buy some chocolate Somewhere over the rainbow A few days ago By foot. 42 The chess game. They will start arguing with each other and one of them will leave the room before they are finished. Pattern No, I don't use them. I have no idea how they work, but I think they were invented for people with bad eyesight. *takes the cookoie carefully and puts it away for further inspection* I only read a translated version of Elantris, but I relayed your question to some friends of mine. Words like 'ruin', 'honour', 'surge' all get translated. Those like 'allomancy' only adapted to fit the language better (Allomantie). So it's a mixture between keeping them and translations. Sorana. That's why I'm using her name here. She lived through so much. I can literally spend days talking about her adventure/ telling them to others. In case you've read some of Lena's stories, they all happened to Sorana. And in the AV it's Althea. She changed a lot, but I like who she has become. Although she really has to get better at some point, or I'll end up with a crazy character.

I would greatly appreciate it. If you are Chaos, please respond so I can shove it in my friend's face (not really, but I will sport serious bragging rights). Thanks!

  17. Hi! My name's Beth, and my favorite of Sanderson's work is The Reckoners books--though I have to mention The Emperor's Soul as well (so clever.) I feel guilty because I've had the third book in the Stormlight Archives for several months (it's signed!) and haven't cracked it open yet. Oops. Besides reading Mr. Sanderson's works, I love Tolkien, Jane Austen, Rick Riordan, Agatha Christie, J.K. Rowling, and some of the Brontes' works. And other than reading, I enjoy writing as well Thanks for reading all that. I should really sleep now...but I think I'll explore. Cool forums <3 ~Beth

  23. Lizanne saw some mushrooms and leaned down to them. They looked good, but she didn't know them and mushrooms were difficult. Kneeling down she plucked one and sniffed it, then turned it around. Lamellas. Meaning it could be edible or not. With a sigh she got back to her feet, wraped it in a rag and then put it into her bag. Walking back to the tree she looked up, to see that Renata was already up there. "Can you see something?" she called up to her and then turned around, observed their surroundings. Despite the trees, she felt as if she was standing in the open. Vulnerable. @ZincAboutIt

  24. “The Farriers?” Brillin asked. He took out a small-sized notebook and quickly noted some stuff down, stuffing it back in his pocket. Part of the book-writing process meant he’d need to take notes. A Seeker, Slider, Soother and Writer in the middle of a gang war. It seemed like the setup to a bad joke. But still, it would make a nice chapter. Maybe two. “I would say to support the strongest gang,” he said. “It doesn’t seem wise to go against them. And the fact that both gangs might want you means you’re in a good position to negotiate.”

  25. I'm still not sure this is a great idea - I feel like there is some power in not publicising who has what ship. The best model on paper would probably be to have each person let each of their neighbours on the player list know of how much damage totally will be received by each ship, but not which ships they are personally piloting (e.g. I might post "1C 2 damage, 1F 5 damage" to Striker and Sart, and if/when they replied to me with new knowledge I wasn't aware of, I'd forward that on). However, that would run up on issues with timing, since not everyone is online at the same time, and it's extremely unlikely the news would make it to opposite sides of the playerlist within a single night cycle. So... Thinking about it, I might be in favour of public sharing. Not because it's the "best" system, but because I think the better systems require a greater level of communication and coordination than I believe is likely to be achievable. Topsy-Turvy smiled as they clambered into the cockpit of the plane. Slowly powering it up, they fastened up the seatbelts. Checking the dashboard - yes, the gravcaps, shields and blasters all seemed to be in good condition. Smiling, she pulled on the throttle, and took to the air. She soared, just her and the The comms started up with a hiss of static. "T, you're flying ahead. Rejoin with the group, and stick to formation. We don't want to lose anyone." That would be the squad commander. Rivelda sighed, and light-lanced onto a nearby meteor to sling around and perform an Ahlstrom loop. She sighed, content, as the gravcaps kicked in, reducing the pressure as the ship kicked around and sent her hurtling back towards the cluster of ships behind her. "And quit showing off." muttered the comms. From one of the other channels, Rivelda didn't see which one, she heard a slight chuckle. "T, show off? Never." Rivelda smirked as she slotted back into the formation. "Death to the bunnies! We will not become rabbit food today!"

  26. As Edahs ran away, somebody shouted “He’s gone!”. Soon, more people and those who had left had returned, cheering, but keeping their distance. Some woman was crying at the man Edahs had devoured, but the general consensus was that they were happy, that the Hunter Shade had scared off another enemy. Shez’s rage still boiled, but it was tempered with reason. For some reason, he knew Alask liked the civilians, he knew the woman with the food wasn’t an enemy, she had tried to help him, she was a friend? Shez was still angry, that anger clouding his judgement. Shez roared at the woman, moving close to her in a heartbeat, but not close enough the tendrils would wither her. “I want to kill her,” Shez said to Alask. “I’m so ANGRY! I WANT TO KILL THEM ALL!” They mean no harm, Alask said wearily, and briefly taking control he made Shez step back. “I know. I don’t understand, everything was simple, I hunted the rule breakers. But now, I’m smarter. How am I smarter? And now, there’s the woman, and I’m so mad I could kill her right now. But I know you don’t want her to die.” I would really prefer if she didn’t die, Alask said, his voice strained. Shez was unpredictable. Shez looked at the woman. She wasn’t a threat, but he felt so angry. But for the first time since his creation, he knew she didn’t have to die for him being angry, as much as he felt he had to. Just how he had killed those Alleyzon employees. Looking at Lena, Shez stilled, shaking his head. Food, he didn’t eat, Alask ate.

  27. The ‘thank you’ caught Brillin by surprise, and he nodded to Attayl. He didn’t really know how to respond, without sounding arrogant or dismissive. You’re welcome? No worries? He just let out a nervous laugh and nodded to her. “Of course.” He looked down. He was no hero. That masked man who’d started the whole fight, maybe he was. But Brillin was just a traveller, a writer, maybe he’d do something right now and then but a hero? No way. “I saw a man once,” he said quietly. “In Rashekin. He called himself the masked Mistborn. He would Lurch a coin towards him, and place it on a table. Then, do you know what he’d do? He’d Push the coin away. It was weak, but definitely Allomancy. Add to the fact no one could hear his Allomancy pulses, and people thought he could burn Copper, Iron and Steel. A true Mistborn.” Brillin took out a coin from his pocket, flipping it in the air. “On my travels, I made friends with him. He told me a secret: he wasn’t a Mistborn. Only a Lurcher. The reason Seekers couldn’t hear his pulses was because he wasn’t burning any other metals. So how did he push the coin? Well, he had this nifty little thing, he called it a ‘magnet’.” Brillin sighed at the end of the story. “I don’t think there’s a way to burn two metals, but there’s definitely a way to fake it.”

  28. I don't like the sound of "limited" IMP missiles for the Largos. It may be better to save them for more threatening situations, such as when we're dealing with a Lifebuster in addition to a large swarm of Krell. For Pocos, it's easier(and safer) to just have a pair of Pocos fire destructors at a Krell rather than have one on destructors and the other on IMP. For this wave, I think we have each of the five pairs of Pocos fire destructors at a specific Krell ship, say 1A-1E. Meanwhile, three Fresas and Largos team up, the Fresas firing Light-Lances while the Largos fire destructors at 1-F-1H. Then, the Gunners take care of Krell 1I and 1J. If there are four Gunners, we can get away with 8 Pocos, 3 Fresas, and 3 Largos, and though that is one more ship than pilot in that scenario, any Ace pilots might be able to compensate. I'd say Snipers should not use their Destructors at this point. The downside to everyone claiming their ship is that it allows the Gunners to chose who they kill, not just which ship they shoot down. The benefit is that it makes things more difficult for the Gunners to hide the elim kill, along with the general benefits of more efficient killing of Krell. If a Krell that was supposed to go down doesn't, it means one member of the pair submitted the kill or the Traitor is starting off the game by betraying their own win condition. This first cycle is when it would make the most sense for each person to claim what ship they're in. Did you confirm that the Fresas can roleblock the Gunners? From "Light-Lance: All Defense Ships are equipped with a light-lance. Using this will roleblock the ship from taking any action that night.", I assumed that Light-Lances could only be used to roleblock Krell and other defense ships.

  29. Brenna Rose was built to fly, to reach for the stars. She put on the pressure suit, hands shaking slightly from adrenaline. This was it. It was her turn. Her first flight as a full pilot. She took a deep breath, calming her nerves. She needed a clear head for the fight. Ground crew helped me up the ladder and into my assigned ship. I quickly ran over the controls before engaging the acclivity ring and heading into the sky. "Skull Three, reporting. Callsign: Bad Wolf," she called to her flight, excitement clear in her voice. She belonged in the stars, and she'd do anything to get there. Up here, in this place she was Bad Wolf. "Are you afraid of the big bad wolf?"

  30. From the album: Multimedia Shardbearer

Normally, I’d be the first in line to fight anyone who ripped a page from a fantasy novel. But the one I stole my paper from to make this piece was about to be destroyed anyway, so my actions were maybe, kinda, sort of justified? I’m really, really sorry. Pleasedon’tformabooklovinglynchmob This depiction of a generic shardbearer is made from acrylic paint, black pen, and various types of paper. It’s loosely based on the illustrations of shardplate from Shallan's sketchbook. I’m reasonably pleased with how it turned out, so I thought I’d share. Thanks for viewing!

  33. I am pleased to announce that there's an entirely new set of reputation titles. Check out under your name to the left of your post and see what title you are--I imagine it will be very different. Why did the ranks get altered? Well, I hadn't ever really expected people to rise through the ranks so fast. Obviously this site isn't going anywhere, and five years down the line, it wouldn't make sense for all of us to be Adonalsium, now would it? So this new scheme was designed to be much more sustainable for years to come. It's also designed to have a ton more progression than the old system. In the old scheme, you became Shard at 128, and then new ranks appeared at 256, 512, and 1024. Not so much progression. Considering how many people are in the 1-500 range, there needed to be a lot more ranks. And boy, there are a lot of new ranks. In the old scheme we had less than 20 ranks total. In this new system, there are 102 positive reputation levels. There's also no exponential growth on new ranks--it's much more linear, with the differences between levels gradually increasing. I hope you find the new system fun! There are a lot of very powerful and cool titles now, but there are also delightfully obscure cosmere titles, and some that are just plain silly. Hehehe. And of course, now with a properly large list of ranks, it's time to complain about their ridiculousness. Some of the promotions are... interesting, to say the least. Discuss yours in the These Stupid Ranks topic.

  34. Stupid question: if you spiked a beaver, would it be able to understand how to use its powers, and in that case, could you create a terrifying Fullborn beaver overlord?

  36. Going off of this, what if Lift's book, all of the illustrations and notes are just recipes? Like, an actual cookbook IN a Stormlight book? That'd be AMAZING.

  37. I hope you are having an amazing time at the Magic Kingdom, and I expect to see photos on Twitter! Overall Good, solid pacing and good reveals. That second kiss scene was HOT and you can sign me right up for a novella where S and I go on their first date. The only thing I really took issue with (other than a few red flag social issues, as noted below) was the ending, which felt a bit deflated, to me. Otherwise, awesome chapter. As I go - pg 1: should 'ree' be capitalized? - pg 1: dying over the kraken - I'd like to see more of this side of the N through Sam's eyes, like a few paragraphs at least of wonder and anxiety, before he remembers he is with other people - pg 2: he leaned into S for a kiss, then we get a 'and afterward'. So did the kiss actually happen? The readers demand to know what Ari lips feel like! Does he taste of sadness and captivity?? Is he kind of not into it, and then S is like OMG HE DOESN'T LIKE ME ANYMORE???? - pg 2: 'fewer mushroom themes'--> DISLIKE. Need more mushroom themes - top of pg 3: people are holding tables? Or tablets? - pg 4: 'remember how I feel for you'. Reads stilted. S has EMOTION. Something more S, maybe, like "remember that I really like you." - pg 5: oh. Woah. Hello yes, that was hot - aeir/aem are cool neopronouns! - pg 12: should we be able to guess what a 'pruner' is? - pg 13: I laughed, loudly, at S's 'how do Ari reproduce, anyway?' - pg 15: ghetto, or reservation? Suggest picking one word and staying with it because they both have very strong emotional draws for different groups - pg 16: so the Ari...bred out mental illness? Or is it being established that they have actual violent tendencies that don't come from mental illness? This section needs some cleaning, I think. It sends up some red flags for me - the ending might need a bit more punch. There was so much tension in the rest of the piece that I feel deflated at the end instead of eager to move to the next chapter. Could it end with an Ari-related reveal maybe?

  39. I have a hard time choosing a favorite anything, and there are so many characters it's hard to decide. I like Kelsier, Shallan, and Syl, to name a few. M-bot is pretty great too.

  41. As Renata reached the canopy she could see that the forest ended a short distance away on one side, the direction where it started thinning. Beyond that she could see a low cobblestone wall that extended along the boundary of the forest, the wall seemed to split at sections and form multiple fields which butted up against the base of the forest. Beyond that a small brick house could distantly be seen, a plume of smoke extending from its chimney giving its location away. Fields seemed to extend upon the other side of the house as well and very distantly something loomed in the distance, a series of cliffs or possibly a very large wall, too difficult to make out. To her left the forest extended a ways further, it seemed to end somewhere distantly in that direction as well. What lay beyond could not be seen but the sharp salty bite of seawater could be smelt upon a faint breeze from that direction. In the other two directions the forest seemed to continue without end, though there were a few small patches that looked like clearings.

  42. The numbers are less tied to the Shards themselves and more to the world's the Shards are invested in. And this seems to be true cosmere wide. The number f oaths has been theorized on before, but it's just speculation at this point. Alloy of Law takes place after the first five stormlight books for sure but we don't have an exact time frame. It could be anywhere from in the gap between arcs, to as far forward as book seven.

  48. Well, humans need three spikes for Harmony to "interfere," but kandra only need two. Since beavers are small rodents, they would probably only need one to be taken over by a soother or rioter or harmony. I think if you wanted a beaver that could consciously use it's powers, it would probably need to have access to both zinc and copper from a very young age, so that it is imprinted with it's hemallurgic abilities. An adult beaver that has lived it's whole life without hemalurgy would not have the part of it's brain developed that it would use for it's powers, like if someone was born without a limb but got a prosthetic, they would not know how to operate with it. I think it is possible, but it would be very complicated. Step 1) Spike some baby beavers with zinc and copper. Step 2) Spike their offspring with the same. Step 3) Teach it (3d gen imprinted spiked beaver) to use hemalurgy through example and access to copperminds of beavers using hemalurgy from a very early age. It should be able to use hemalurgy consciously, now.
