  1. De’Tess leaned against the brick wall of the shop, eyes closed, ears and nose twitching back and forth. It was an old trick TrellVin had once taught them. People know to hide their form from sight, but few think to hide their scent, and kandra could smell and hear better than any but a tineye. So they leaned against the wall, waiting, listening, and protecting. The comfortable burn of copper in their belly kept them warm through their long vigil. They could make out the voices of the mistings inside the building if they tried to, but tonight their senses were tuned outward, listening for the telltale thud of a body landing on stone. De’Tess knew in their heart they were being hunted. . . .n you hea. . . Their ears twitched towards the phantom voice, trying to figure out where it came from. They opened their eyes, and looked around. It had sounded like someone was whispering right in their face, but the street was empty. There didn’t seem to be anyone on the roofs either. . . .andra, right? So yo. . . They fell into a crouch, and their flesh shifted, dropping a bone knife into a waiting hand. Someone was there, and De’Tess couldn’t see them. With their free hand, they reached out, and knocked on the door of the shop. The voices inside quieted. “Dedre? Is that you?” Pitching their voice higher, as they had been since deciding on a name, they called out, “Yeah, I think someone is out here.” A muttered curse, from two directions at once. One from inside the shop, as their new allies began to make their way to the door to aide them, and one from a refuse pile across the street. De’Tess flung their knife instinctively towards the pile, right as a crossbow bolt was fired out of it. Knife and bolt met midair in a splinter of bone and wood, and De’Tess sprinted for the pile. . . . atch out be. . . They skidded and spun, facing a voice that had come from nowhere. What was going on? Was someone else there or not? It was all the distraction that was needed. Someone exploded from the refuse, swinging a great big sword. De’Tess spun again to face it, but failed to avoid the overhead swing. It cut clean through shoulder, ribcage, and out the far hip. They gasped as they felt the forcible separation of their blessings. The door to the shop burst open and skaa mistings poured into the street. The swordsman cursed again sprinting away as some began to pursue. More dropped to their knees around De’Tess. Suddenly, another was there. A spectrial, misty figure. Kandra, can you hear me? This is important. Was this Preservation? “Yes, I can.” Their life was fading. I need you to repeat my words. Fynn Seidel's soul wasn't broken enough to contain me. Needed someone more broken, someone who could truly hear me as more than a whisper. Needed to find a spiked. Who is spiked? Vin is, Zane is, is my kandra still with them? What about my brother, can I find him? If i can talk, I can protect Vin. Have to get her away from Zane, away from the servant of that dark god. Bring her back to Elend. Really, I need to get rid of Jastes as well. If she doesn’t have anything to live for, she’ll let him loose. What do I have to work with here? I know every Possibility, but not the Probabilities. Hadrian is here. He’s understandably frustrated. If he figures anything out, I’ll try to convey his thoughts to someone. I should probably follow Lethir, almost certain he works against Elend. Laila is lying as always, and Jumae the 2nd is being one of the smartest people I have seen since I died. It’s hard to get my messages across. No way to hear what people say to me without everyone else hearing. I have too few words for too many ears. Too many secrets. De’Tess whispered the words aloud as they heard them, nonsensical as they were. The villagers crowded around them murmured to each other in confusion. “Have I done good, my lord?” They could barely see anything except the spirit. You did. Come with me, and be at peace. Lethir scowled as Dedre besmirched his good name. With her last words, she cast doubt on him? What the ashes had he ever done to her? He stood up and called to the others. “Come on, we have to chase down her murderer.” A couple of the Pewterarms nodded, and they ran down the street, burning Pewter to catch up with the swordsman. Lethir lead them down the alleyway the swordsman had taken, kicking off the wall to redirect his considerable momentum. At the far end of the alleyway, he could see the swordsmen turn another corner. Lethir flared his pewter and gave chase, the others behind him. “Get back you you craven!” They turned the corner, going wide into the street, just in time to see their prey slam a door shut behind him. Lethir flared his metal as much as he could, trying to close the distance, when he heard a thud and a shout from behind him. He looked over his shoulder, and his heart almost stopped. A man was crouched atop the ruined corpse of one of his Pewterarms. The blood trail leading from the body suggested that the body had slid on the ground from the force of the man’s landing. He stood, and a sudden gust of wind blew down the street, blowing mist out of the street. A Mistborn, cloak billowing wide around him, Kredik Shaw in the distance framing him, grinned. “I’m a bit busy, so I’ll make this quick.” He was surrounded by the 3 pewterarms, so they could still possibly win this. All three of them charged the Mistborn, who only raised his hands. Lethir felt a pressure in his stomach, like something pushing him backwards, then sudden ripping pain, then a terrible snap, as somehow, all the metal in his stomach was pushed out his back, through his spine. Dimly, he heard twin cries of agony from his men, and a woosh of passing air as the Mistborn lept skyward. As he faded, he heard a faint Huh, that solves that. “...and with Lethir’s death, sir, I have frankly no clue what our response ought to be. Clearly the measures young Venture is taking are insufficient to address Lekal’s obvious attempts at sabotage. I advocate an immediate inspection into every official, starting from the top, until this mess is sorted out. I’ll pick men I trust for this one.” “And you think you’re any better, you slimeball? Lord Ruler, you could be one of his agents yourself! How do we trust your advice over Venture’s anyway? How do we trust anyone but ourselves?” “Yeah, that army will be in spitting range within a few days, shorter if we let Lekal’s people kill our best men like they just did. Bloody ashes, they killed a Kandra, and those things are immortal! Might have made it talk nonsense too, even. Inspections won’t deal with the supernatural.” “The only one talking nonsense is you! What do skaa know about army movement and Kandra? If you don’t want to take this threat seriously, perhaps you could use an incentive from a supernatural source...” Elend sat, an oasis of relative calm, as his assembly bickered beneath him on the makeshift stone platform he’d used for the emergency council. He leaned over to Tindwyl. “What’s got into them this time?” he asked. “Quite simply, Venture, terror. Two murders, and no signs of the culprits, make any man fear that he’s the next in line for the assassin’s dagger or coin. It’s a natural response,” she stated, “unfortunately. Terrified men make poor leaders.” “What should I do, then?” Elend responded. “Do?” A wry grin spread across Tindwyl’s face, a rarity. “You can do nothing. Let them decide, and when their decisions fail, allow them to come back to you. Then—and only then—will you be able to destroy the panic gripping them.” Elend nodded slowly. “What if they succeed, though? If their plans do catch spies or that Zane Mistborn? If they help me find Vin?” Tindwyl’s expression hardened. “Then you use the death as a reinforcement of the group’s capabilities, and claim any credit you can. You cannot let your few supporters fall off, Elend, particularly as they’re dying at alarming rates. This Assembly you threw together has to get past this point to succeed.” Elend sighed. “Indeed. Well, to their business—for now. Let’s see who they think is guilty today.” Randuir was attacked and killed! He was a Elend’s Loyalist Smoker 2. Young Bard was attacked and killed! He was a Elend’s Loyalist Thug 1. Day 2 has begun! It will end in about 46-47 hours’ time on Tuesday 21 May at 9:00 PM EDT (-4:00 UTC). Please remember that PMs are closed at day. There will be a lynch today, with no vote minimum to kill. Player List and Rules Clarifications:

  2. So I'm finally able to report back from the signing. First off, I'd like to thank everybody who showed up, you asked great questions! Because of the issues with recording audio without consent, we opted for writing down all WoBs right on the spot. So we got prime seats next to the signing table, I pulled out my laptop and typed away. A special thanks goes to Rhapsody and Sorana for helping me fill in any gaps and also going over the WoBs we collected again. The signing went pretty great overall. Due to our position, we were able to constantly pester Isaac with questions and it was great to perpetually chat with him. The reading was from a revised version of the first chapter from SA 4. It turned out quite a bit different and I've already uploaded it to Arcanum for transcription. So, without further ado, here are my compiled notes from the event: First Signing Sorana: Would a spike charge if I threw it at someone with the intention to spike something out of him and hit the right bindpoint? Brandon: Yes. Sorana: So spike darts are a thing. Brandon: Yes, and spike guns are a thing as well. Rhapsody: If I took a fabrial to Shadesmar, would it work and what would happen to the Spren trapped in it? Brandon: RAFO Sorana: Is Soulcasting volume- or mass-preserving? Brandon: It's mass-preserving, but there are some strange things going on and that's why we don't get as much explosions as we should. You can see a bit of what is going when Jasnah Soulcasts air, there are some little reactions, but not as strong as you ought to get. Rhapsody: You have described Ettmetal as some kind of Super-Cesium. After the reaction with water, is there residual Ettmetal hydroxide and what are its properties? Brandon: Yes, it does. There's the potential they'll find it and use it, but as far as the properties are concerned, you get a RAFO. Paleo: Are the Ashynite magic system and the Old Magic related? If so, does the "Old" part come from that? Brandon: Yes, they are related, but the name comes from the magic actually predating Spren bonds. Paleo: Since your books are "translations" from another language and "Hierocracy" is a foreign word in English, is it also a foreign word in the original language? Brandon: No, but good question. Paleo: There's symbols in the temple at the end of Bands of Mourning which none of the characters recognize. Are they from any writing system known to us or did Kelsier make them up? Brandon: RAFO Paleo: Is Wisdom a Shard? If so, how bad does it want to survive? Brandon: There is a shard with a similar Intent. The Shard has realized that survival might not be the most desirable/important. Paleo: Have Rosharan mathematics advanced far enough to know Julia sets? Brandon: Yes, they know Julia Sets. Some of the mathematics are farther along at this time than ours, some are behind. Kinda like abstractionalism is a centuries-old art style on Roshar, calculus was discovered way earlier. Paleo: What symbol will be on the Warbreaker leatherbound? Brandon: He referred as to Isaac, who showed us several designs which are not finalized, but they are confirmed as Tears of Edgli. Rhapsody posted the picture already on the general Germany signing thread. The cover will feature Nightblood. Questioner: What happened to Elhokar's body? Brandon: It was burned with honors. Winds Alight: In SA the Stormfather refers to several people as "Child of Honor", but only Kaladin as "Child of Tanavast". Is there significance to that? Brandon: Yes, there is. Questioner: Can the survival Shard hide in a person? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Do people celebrate their birthdays on Roshar, because Kaladin doesn't seem to care? Brandon: Yeah, there are celebrations like birthdays and others as well, but I can't put everything in the books. Some people care more, some - like Kaladin - less. Questioner: Do we know who built the Steel Highway in Mistborn? Brandon: Some people know, but it's not general knowledge. Questioner: Can a Mistborn use the Investiture from a Highstorm? Brandon: It takes some effort to convert the Investiture. They can burn metals from other planets, though. Questioner: Is Nightblood an aluminium-titanium alloy? Brandon: No, he's something else. RAFO Questioner: What inspired the Shattered Plains? Brandon: Little Wild Horse canyon and others in southern Utah. That's what inspired the chasms. Questioner: Any tips on creating a Magic System? Brandon: Focus on what the powers can't do instead of what they can do. It's the boundaries that get interesting. Lookup Sanderson's Laws. Paleo: Will the Warbreaker leatherbound contain the Nalthis essay? Isaac: No, but the Arcanum Unbounded Leatherbound will contain it. Questioner: Is Doomslug capable of using Hypertravel as well as taking matter with her? Brandon: RAFO. Doomslug will be very important to the next book. She's very relevant to the events of the book coming out in December. Questioner: What's the most challenging part about art? Isaac: [partial answer] Getting things to look realistic. Took a lot of practice. Questioner: The Voidbinding chart has a red ruby with two imprisoned voidbringers who have no connection to the voidbinding skills. Is this the because they are imprisoned or are they in need of the other Voidbringers to unleash their powers like the lightnings are trying to illustrate? Brandon: RAFO Zykai: Did the Shin use Honorblades in their invasions? If yes, did they also use Surges? Brandon: Yes and yes. Questioner: Ambition wasn't splintered in the contest with Odium. Is there a reason why he hasn't chosen another Avatar yet? Brandon: Yes. Questioner: How is Ashyn earth-like given its orbit? It should be even less habitable than Roshar. Brandon: The Rosharan system was manifactured for a specific purpose. The position of the moons isn’t stable and even the continent itself might eventually vanish. Questioner: Was there a good reason for Elhokar to not speak his First Oath earlier or was he just plain stupid? Brandon: He wasn't ready yet. It can take a long time and he was hung up on his insecurities. Questioner: Why did Adolin kill Sadeas? Brandon: He's young and hotheaded unlike Dalinar. Sishal: How was Glys corrupted? Was the process similar to the lesser spren, like painspren? Brandon: It is similar, but Glys is self-aware, so slightly different process, but similar. It is through Sja-Anat. Sishal: Did Sja-Anat have to convince Glys to corrupt him then? (This previously said "Will we see other Radiant spren?", but @Sishal contacted me to have it corrected) Brandon: RAFO Questioner: How do you write the beginnings to your books? Brandon: Beginnings are hard. Usually I write one, trash it and come back to it when I finished the book. After I finished the book, I try to find the perfect beginning. Questioner: Are there certain topics you want to avoid in your writing? Brandon: There certainly are some topics I'd never cover, like certain types of abuse. Questioner: [inaudible - something about Shallan's personalitiies] Brandon: At the end of Oathbringer, she works really hard to supress her other personas and she will be a lot more stable. Questioner: Will there be a Rithmatist sequel? Brandon: There will eventually. I was working on that when I was offered WoT and just couldn't get back into it yet. Questioner: Do specific colours have an impact on Awakening in Warbreaker? Brandon: Not usually, you just need a certain amount to Awaken. But there can be more due to various reasons connected to the Cosmere. It is connected to the significance of eye colours on Roshar. Questioner: Will Vivenna, Vasher and Nightblood reunite? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Do you want to build up Hoid to be a character like Randall Flagg? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Did Aginor reappear after the cleansing of Saidin? Brandon: Ask Maria, the continuity person. Questioner: Are you involved with the WoT TV show? Brandon: Yes, I get to read the scripts and give feedback. I get to push the characters in the direction I want them to go. The first screenplay was really good. Questioner: Have we seen Ghostbloods in action outside of the Rosharan system? Brandon: You have seen proto-Ghostbloods, but not after the their actual initiation. Questioner: Who did the Crownlands historically belong to before there was a king and what purpose do they serve now? Brandon: At the moment the Crownlands are the property of the king and work for him, to earn money or to give them away to a lord. Before Gavilar, they belonged to some princedom. Questioner: How has Sunmaker's sword ended up with Dalinar? Brandon: Initially, it belonged to one of the highprinces. After that it went through a lot of people. Tidbits from the interview No news about book adaptations. Hopes for his series with the advent of WoT and Witcher. WoT first screenplay is phenomenal. German writers are all outliners. Already scrapped earlier first chapter from SA 4. Read new version, but will obviously be revised again. -> Recording Q & A Questioner: The map of Kholinar looks like a lion's head. Is that an allusion to Caemlyn? Brandon: It was not a conscious decision to make it look like Caemlyn. The city shapes are based on Cimatics patterns that have deep-rooted origins in the history of Roshar. I may make a lot of unconscious allusions, but something like the Misted Mountains are a conscious reference. Rhapsody: Will the Threnody book take place in the homeland? Brandon: The book is tentatively called "The Dust Brigade". A group wants to free the homeland of the evil. It doesn't go well for them. Opening scene is all ships sinking and people washing up on shore. Questioner: Shadesmar is an inversion of Roshar. In the Physical Realm, planets are disconnected, but in Shadesmar you can reach one from the other. Is there a point in Shadesmar where I can instantly cross between diametrically opposed points on Roshar? Brandon: Yes, technically there is, but oceans etc. are problematic since there's not enough minds there. There are points, but the transition is more steady than instantaneous. It will be hard, since you're basically leaving the planet when you go far enough. If you just went south, you'd end up on another planet. Kind of yes. Shadesmar gets funky because you end up in no man's land. We'd need to do the exact maths on that one. Krios: If you have a form of manipulating your Identity and a form of healing. Are you able to shapeshift or even evolve your body like growing wings? Brandon: You'd have to do some real work on your spirit web to make that work. It'd take more work than you're implying, but the Parshendi for instance are doing this. It'll take a little more work, it's not just blanking your Identity. Hemalurgy would make it very easy, but also very evil. But what you want to achieve is possible. The Forumlurker: If a Radiant tried to Soulcast directly with the Stormlight from the Highstorm, what essences could they create? Brandon: They could basically do whatever they want. There wouldn't be any limitations, but only for Radiant Soulcasters. Questioner: How do you choose Worldhoppers to depict in your books? Brandon: There's couple of ways I choose Worldhoppers. The background story plays a big part, but some Worldhoppers I just want to be immigrants. Some people you meet, you'll notice they're from a different planet but aren't involved in any schemes. They just wanted to get to another planet. There's groups like the Ghostbloods, but there's also just trade between places like Roshar and Nalthis. I have to be careful to not make everyone an easter egg from other worlds. That would strain plausibility very easily. Paleo: How is Dark One coming along? Brandon: It's coming along very well. It's like Harry Potter from the perspective of Voldemort, where the good guys want to get the bad guy. It's like Narnia was trying to assasinate those who come over to their world to destroy it. The outline is really great, we pitched it across Hollywood. We had a really great response, but no contracts are done. We're planning to release it as an audiobook original. We haven't closed the contract on that yet, but we have an offer. Questioner: Your stories are always so unexpected. Do you plan these things or do they develop as you discover the story and the characters? Brandon: Parts of it are from the outline, but sometimes I want to develop the characters further and make more organic decisions. Questioner: Do you plan to do something like Arcanum Unbounded again? Brandon: Yes, eventually there will be AU2. I need to write more short stories before that. I'm hoping my novella this year will be on Rsyn. Theoretically I will continuing going that, showing little glimpses of places around the Cosmere. Questioner: What idea sparked Stormlight for you? Brandon: The very first seed for everything was a man who's brother to a king. The king gets assassinated and the nephew becomes a bad king. How he copes with that is what I started thinking about. We all have somebody in our family . That became Dalinar and Elhokar in SA. Questioner: Was Shallan's ability to draw intentional just so you could have her draw all the maps? Brandon: Yes, basically that was the seed for her. I was inspired by people from history like Darwin who was a scientist and did drawings. That was part of the concept that made me put Shallan into the books. All those drawings are intended to give you a sense of immersion. Questioner: Would magic from one world work on another and if so, how? Brandon: Generally, magics in the Cosmere work on different planets. But it depends on the magic. Things like the Dor on Sel are locked to the geography, so it gets difficult. The metallic arts work pretty much universally though. Making Surgebinding work on another planet would require Stormlight and the spren are bound to Roshar, so getting them off planet is quite hard. So the magics kind of work differently depending on whether a sentient being is involved, how the magic works and how it's powered. It would be very easy to take some Breaths off of Nalthis, which is a problem for them. It gets very complicated. Questioner: Can there be a mixing of magic? Brandon: Yes there can be. Questioner: Do you know what the next big series will be? Brandon: Right now, my job is to finish things. I won't start anything before that. There's some other big books I want to work on in the Cosmere. I will finish Wax and Wayne and Skyward 4 after SA 4, then comes SA 5. Questioner: Is Iyatil from Scadrial? Brandon: Her heritage is from Scadrial, but she actually is from Silverlight. It's more recent than my heritage from Denmark. Second Signing Questioner: Now that Hoid has bonded a spren, is he locked on Roshar? Brandon:Yes, that is a problem. Something will happen that is relevant. RAFO Questioner: Do you use consultants? Brandon: Yes I do, but it depends on the book. For instance, we apparently got longswords wrong in the last book and a consultant would have helped there. Questioner: Do you prefer writing epic fantasy or young adult? Brandon: My first love is epic fantasy, but if I only did that, I'd go crazy. I have to change basically every other book and like to be able to jump around. Questioner: Where have we seen proto-Ghostbloods? Brandon: RAFO, but you guys are pretty close to figuring that out. Questioner: Is Rock lying about his birth order? Brandon: No, he is not. There was a change due to deaths in the family, but he did not lie. Questioner: How do you name your characters? Brandon: It depends on how much work I've done on the linguistics. Some planets I haven't done a lot of work on that. On Roshar I've built out the linguistics a lot, so I build names out of that. On Scadrial, however, I went more with real world inspirations or stuff I liked, like "Wax and Wayne", which is a pun they can't really understand. Names like Elend or Straff are Germanic in origin, Vin, Demoux or Kelsier are French. Paleo: Is Wax's name pronounced French in Scadrian? Brandon: Yes, it is. I can't even pronounce it. [Various people pronounce Waxillium with a French accent] Questioner: Shallan's and Adolin's relationship felt sort of rushed at the end. Was there a reason you developed it like that? Brandon: Shallan and Adolin are very young and madly in love. The marriage partly was for state reasons. They're really unlike Dalinar, who was in denial for 15 years about loving Navani. Questioner: Can you burn Cadmium to trap air and move in space like that? Brandon: That's a plausible extrapolation, but I'll give you a RAFO on that. You're thinking along the right lines. Questioner: When you design a new world. Do you give Isaac all the details for the maps? Brandon: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I may give him notes on how I want it to look like, but sometimes I just let him do what he wants. Zykai: Squires and people wielding Honorblades use more Stormlight than a regular Radiant. Who uses more? Brandon: The further you progress, the more efficient you become at consuming Stormlight. They're never as efficient as the Voidbringers, since humans leak too much. Sorana: Do you have any tips regarding drawing the symbols/glyphs? Isaac: I always have to copy them myself. I did design a handscript of the allomantic symbols. You might get to see them later. Paleo: Will the Steel Alphabet change further with the later eras of Mistborn? Isaac: Yes, it will. I've already got some designs that look very sci-fi-y. Questioner: Will the WoT show be from the POV of the Aes Sedai or the Ta'veren? Brandon: I can't spoil you on that as I'm under an NDA. They went with some unexpected decisions, which I really liked though. The Forumlurker: Can a Windrunner use a Basic Lashing on a specific body part? Brandon: Yes, but it works the same way a Steelpusher could push on a specific part of metal. Usually, you'd just affect the whole body, because of its Identity and Cosmere magic not working as well on parts of something that considers itself a unit. When you're very skilled, you can isolate a hand, like Kelsier could push on specific sections of metal. Questioner: Are there Windrunners who are afraid of heights? Brandon: Yes there are. You can see with Kaladin that a lot of them would see the sky as their domain, but there are some with a fear of heights. It's like being a left-handed woman in Alethkar, there are some things you just could end up with. Questioner: We see Nightblood consuming both Breaths and Stormlight. Earlier you've mentioned conversion between types of Investiture. Is Nightblood doing that? Brandon: Nightblood can feed off of any source of Investiture. If you're a Mistborn, burning a metal while wielding Nightblood would directly feed him. So you stay alive for as long as you have metal left. Questioner: Why do Vorin women have to hide their left hand? Brandon: Originally, a woman wrote a book about female and male arts, which claimed women could do things like art with one hand while men needed two for their arts, like fighting. Eventually, it evolved and just stuck as a taboo, but it's a cultural thing. It's similar to how some things are perfectly fine in our Western culture but would be frowned upon in, say, Korea. I wanted to add some weirdness to their culture, something that is pretty normal to them, but strange to us. Taboos usually are strange. Questioner: Are there parshmen Heralds? Brandon: No, there are not. Questioner: Will Michael Kramer read SA 4 as well? Brandon: Yes, at the moment it planned that he will do that. Questioner: At the end of Oathbringer Kaladin says that the oaths are about perception. So what would happen, when a crazy person bonds a crazy spren? Is there a hard limit to what the oaths allow or could they just go on a John Wick style rampage? Brandon: Perception will get you a very long way, like Nightblood proves. So you can go beyond the oaths, but there will be a hard limit. Although it will be hard to find a such fitting pair of human and sprend. Questioner: Do you sometimes draw inspiration from real world people? Brandon: Yes, I do. Usually it's a conflict a person has which I want to depict. Most of Bridge Four are friends of mine. Questioner: What happened to Hoid after he met Kelsier at the Well? Brandon: He went to figure out Feruchemy. When Vin found him beaten up, it was because he got more involved than he should have. Paleo: Is Tashi a Herald and if so, which one? Is Nun Raylisi Odium? Brandon: Yes to both. I think the Herald is Ishar, but I'd have to double check. Sorana: I've got a last question from a friend of mine. Could the light at the end of Oathbringer have been seen by another Surgebinder? Brandon: RAFO Sorana: I expected that. We tried to reproduce them verbatim, but it's pretty hard to get everything right. Thankfully, people were willing to repeat their questions and answers when we didn't catch them, so we should be as close to the truth as possible. Nevertheless, all WoBs have to be considered paraphrased.

  3. I have big post coming because I am miffed rn, so that is what I do. Again, Jumae is gone because whimsicality is not needed here. And so we begin, and I will put dotted lines in between sections for ease of reading. First, ------------------------------------------------- THE BALLAD OF JOE: Fura asks why Joe isn’t on the player list. Fifth says player list is correct, but don’t have to be on it to be in the game. Lumgol says Joe is secret. Cadmium speculates that Joe is Kelsier, and is related to Vin. Mailliw votes for Joe. Bard votes for Joe, asks for explanation. Devotary suggests that Joe is Preservation, and cannot speak. Fura formally denounces the lynch on Joe. Stick says Joe is a co-GM, and may be similar to Fifth’s role as Elend. Lumgol votes Joe to find out their role. Fura wants to interact with Joe so doesn’t want him dying. Stink suggests leaving the Joe situation alone and just kind of ignoring him. Straw suggests waiting till D2 to lynch Joe. Hemalurgic Headshot says don’t lynch Joe as secret roles are fun. Rae suggests that Joe is Kelsier, doesn’t want him lynched. Bard proposes that we should be more suspicious of Joe. Mailliw says that Stink is protecting Joe. Bard suggests that Joe is Jestas Lekal, and is an Elim Figurehead. Fura thinks Joe is a neutral with an independent wincon. Why is it all bold? Because Google Docs, Idk. Anyway, these are all posts that matter in relation to Joe. As for PMs that matter in relation to Joe, there's another few things: Mailliw really wanted to know why I 'supported' Joe. Lumgol has PM'd at least 2 people, Mailliw and I. And if they haven't PM'd you, they got Kelsier in response to their vote. Not that many PMs, but hey now everyone should know what Lum got in response, because that should be secret. Also someone feel free to counter-claim. Anyway, I don't actually want to analyse this as I frankly don't care about Joe's involvement in the game. He's not on the player list, so he can do whatever. That's just how games work. ------------------------------------------------------------------ IS COOP COOPED UP? I bring to the attention of the court, but without quoting but you can scroll up, Bard's post where he mentions someone possibly being in a similar situation to Joe, where they cannot speak in thread but are actually on the player list or w/e. Basically everyone on the player list has posted, except for one person (which is kinda ruined by the title of this chapter), which is coop. So yeah, Coop didn't respond to any of my PMs which made me sad, and I can't get their view on this but apparently Bard has and I don't like it. This is a short chapter for the most part. Also loads of people don't wanna talk to me in PMs -------------------------------------------------------------- ARARIS OR BARD? Not a chapter, Araris shouldn't have been lynched upon making a summary of his posts. Y'all killed a guy for committing to what he says about lynching on D1. That's cold. Like no-one really lynched him for anything really, half of them are because people didn't want Bard to die. Sad chapter, this one is. -------------------------------------------------------------- MAILLIW OR NO-ONE ELSE REALLY THIS IS JUST ABOUT MAILLIW Here is also a summary of Mailliw's posts that I think are pertinent: Joke vote on Elend. Will discuss thoughts in both PMs and in thread. Unvotes Randuir. Says those voting Araris are “fools”, but in RP terms. Asks the Unstable Mistborn to contact him to help find Elims. Votes Steel. Says Steel vote is because his Araris vote seemed to be the tipping point. Makes another post asking Unstable Mistborn to contact him. Look at all this beautiful bolding. It's amazing. Now for some analysis/whatever it probably won't be that useful. (1) is whatever, good joke I can appreciate it. (2) Just a normal thing in response to Randuir, again a whatever. (4) This is where things get interesting, he defends Araris slightly by just saying those voting for him are in the wrong, but doesn't really commit to any defence with any analysis or anything, just wants it known or something I guess. (5) I don't think anyone really realised he'd asked the Mistborn to contact him D1, but yeah he did and also didn't like Steel at the time, and that bit is fair. (6) Again, a defence of Araris but not really, just something to be thrown in there I guess? Idk, feels kinda non-committal. (7) This one is a lot more obvious, but he really wants claims from the mistborn and all that. Now that small post analysis has been done, because I don't really like any of those posts, it's PM time! Yeah, I have like no PMs so I gotta make do with what I got, okay? Firstly, he was one of two to PM me first without me doing anything, and for I truly am thankful Mailliw. You remembered me when only one other person did. But also, it was a PM about Joe which just made me go 'ugh'. Again, he ain't on the player list so he ain't my problem. Around halfway through the cycle, Mailliw apparently knows like 5 roles including his, and I have no idea why so many people are claiming this apparently if his word is to be trusted. Like cmon guys, it's not even N2 yet. How can you do this. There really isn't anything else there, except why are so many people claiming to this guy? All in all, I'll vote for Mailliw tomorrow unless the situation changes drastically. ---------------------------------------------------- LUMGOL MAYBE? IDK IT'S SOMETHING LIKE THAT GETTING KINDA BORED Lumgol's claim is an interesting situation, but it's also whatever 'cause I don't wanna lynch them tomorrow so I'll deal with it later. What is more interesting is the reaction to it! There's two or three main actors for this, who are Bard, Rae and Elandera. Others are kinda related, but aren't that mainstream yet (but I got my eye on Randuir). Bard wasn't a big fan of the claim, so went after Lumgol. Fair, it was a really weird claim and like there wasn't really any pressure that led to it? Maybe they just really wanted to help with the Joe situation, a situation that shouldn't exist. Rae and Elandera though, are massive fans of this claim. Both vote for Bard due to questioning that claim, with this being the only thing Elandera really did in my notes. So yeah, those three got a big ol 'connect me' line in the relationship chart of this game. --------------------------------------------------- CLOSING NOTES This is post is kinda long, and I'm kinda tired so don't wanna add more. Feel free to PM me all your role claims like you're all supposedly doing to others, oh and also don't trust Fura with anything sensitive. ,

  5. So I was messing around with a universe simulator called Universe Sandbox 2, and I thought 'Why not try to recreate the Cosmere planetary systems?' So I got out my Arcanum Unbounded, and thus began the long and arduous process of trying to make and arrange the celestial bodies of a wonderful fictional dwarf galaxy. Star Cluster? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I had to get creative about the colors of some of the planets, because the program doesn't actually include a way to change the colors of gas giants, so I had to edit the code of the bodies directly and repeatedly change the RBG values until they looked right. Took a very long time to do this and to position everything the right way, but I'm pretty happy with the way they all turned out. My goal with all of this was to realistically re-create the starcharts, but I also thought that they could make pretty cool backgrounds, so I made a few different versions with the systems and planets in different orientations, and I've included them all here. For each system there is a zoomed-in, zoomed-out, and diagonal line up version of the planets, a 90° angle landscape version, and one where each of the planets are placed around the sun at random points along their orbits (though the Taldain System does not have this last one, for obvious reasons). I think they ended up looking really good, so feel free to use them as backgrounds. So without further ado: [If the images aren't displaying properly then here's the imgur album: https://imgur.com/gallery/ALPA6sC] The Rosharan System [Zoomed In, All] The Rosharan System [Centered] The Rosharan System [Zoomed In] The Rosharan System [Zoomed Out] The Rosharan System [Centered, Angled] The Rosharan System [Diagonal] The Rosharan System [Orbits] The Selish System [Centered] The Selish System [Zoomed In] The Selish System [Zoomed Out] The Selish System [Orbits] The Selish System [Orbits, Zoomed Out] The Selish System [Diagonal] The Drominad System [Centered] The Drominad System [Zoomed In] The Drominad System [Zoomed Out] The Drominad System [Diagonal] The Drominad System [Orbits] The Drominad System [Centered, Angled] The Taldain System [Centered] The Taldain System [Zoomed Out] The Taldain System [Zoomed In] The Taldain System [Diagonal] The Taldain System [Diagonal, Zoomed Out] The Scadrian System [Centered] The Scadrian System [Zoomed In] The Scadrian System [Orbits] The Scadrian System [Zoomed Out] The Scadrian System [Zoomed Out, All] The Scadrian System [Diagonal] The Scadrian System [Centered, Angled] The Threnodite System [Zoomed In] The Threnodite System [Centered] The Threnodite System [Zoomed Out] The Threnodite System [Orbits] The Threnodite System [Diagonal]

  6. Today was Brandons signing in stuttgart. I went, so i thought i post everything that I still remember. He read a draft of the first chapter of Rythms of War, Stormlight 4. He mentioned, that he has already read one version before, so this probably isnt the hottest news. The chapter is from Lirins point of view a year after the end of Oathbringer. The singers seem to have conquered all of Alethkar and Herdaz. Naturally they also control Hearthstone and a lot of refugee from Herdaz come to town. Lirin is checking them for wounds and diseases. He has a longer talk with the leading singer lady in which they discuss, if Lirin actually feels for his patients. He says, that he cant allow himself to feel to much and she acusses him of having a stone for a heart. Later on he mentions that there is a new kind of plaque in the east, similiar to the ones that old manuscripts talk about. Something that hasnt been seen in modern times. He also dicusses with Laral, what do to with the Herdazian general, from the interlude in Oathbringer, as he is one of the refugees. Apparently he lost the war against the singers and got most of his men killed in a hopeless battle. Laral mentions, that some people would call that heroism, Lirin says he would rather have the men back. Brandon also mentioned, that the first scene of the Threndoy novel is people coming ashore after being shipwrecked at the coast of the homeland. I got to ask two questions, but unfortunately I have to paraphrase the answers. 1. If you have a way to manipulate Identity, like feruchemical aluminium, and a way of healing, like feruchemical gold, would you be able to not just shapeshift, but actually evolve your body like growing wings. A: He said, that you would need something more then just blanking your Identity and healing to actually evolve your body, but he said that it is enough for shapeshifting and quite similiar to what the singers do. For evolving you would need to be able to seriously manipulate your spiritweb. He also said, that hemalurgy would make this far easier, but also evil. 2. At the end of Oathbringer Kaladin says, that the oaths are about perception. So what would happen, when a crazy person bonds a crazy spren? Is there a hard limit to what the oaths allow or could they just go on a John Wick style rampage. A: He said, that eventually there would be hard limits, but that perception will get you a very long way, like Nightblood proves. So this was my first signing and it was awesome. Although I didnt get to ask one of the German translators how they got from Well of Ascension to Warriors of Fire. That still confuses me. He answered a great deal more questions, but I dont remember most of them well enough, so if you went please post them. Thanks.

  9. Mr. Itiah sighed, sitting down on his couch. He twiddled his thumbs. When had underlings become so selfless? He shook his head. You didn’t get too connected with underlings. There were too many, too expendable to try and form a connection. “It’s not my choice,” he said finally. Such was the consequence of failure. He paused. “You’ve provided useful intel though, if your correct about the info you gave me it could be the most useful reconnaissance mission this month. So you and your team might definitely be picked for that, but that’s the best I can do.”

  16. OK, so the bandwagon appeared on me over my vote on Joe (well, also Lum, but that was a hasty vote made when I was tired late at night, so I acknowledge that was probably a mistake), so we should probably figure out what Joe is in order for me to prope Here's what we know. When Fura asked about Joe being in the game, Fifth responded by saying: And yet, they have not spoken in the thread, they can not be PM'ed. However, I just received clarification that they are targetable by actions, as a player. The thing is, there's one role that is fairly similar to this - Elend Venture, Fifth's GM role. Here's a clarification by Fifth last cycle about players not appearing on the player list: If Joe has a similar type of role, then it would be obvious why they have not responded in thread - they are a co-GM, not a 'player' in the normal sense, and therefore it would obviously be kind of problematic if they were to start talking and acting like a player in the thread. In fact, I found it strange to begin with that Joe would join as a player before since, as someone who was originally going to be GM'ing, they knew many of the earlier secrets. If they are actually a co-GM, just one with a mechanical effect on the game, then that's suddenly not an issue. So, if Joe is a co-GM, and has a role that is targetable by actions and presumably the lynch, then the obvious next question is what role they have. I believe this would likely have to be Jestas Lekal, which is an excellent counterpoint to Fifth's Elend role, but aligned with the Elim team. I struggle to see Joe as a Village aligned co-GM, for a number of reasons. The first is a matter of balance. I think there is a certain aesthetic that would be achieved by having two GM's, each of which had a 'player' that worked for one of the main two sides. The second (and more convincing) reason is that a number of people who defended Joe last round are people who I find suspicious. In particular, after I suggested that Joe may have a role that did not allow them to speak in thread, Fura made a post that I found extremely suspect - I'm including that in the section on the bandwagon on me below. The third and final reason is that I just don't see all that many alternatives that seem to fit like this does. I am in a PM with somebody that suggested they may actually be a role like Kelsier, who is a Cognitive Shadow, and therefore unable to speak in the thread. I... can't see this being the case. If it were a player-Kelsier, then I would find it extremely unlikely that they would be given such a restrictive role that they couldn't talk, period, because at that point it wouldn't be fun for the player. As a GM-Kelsier, it makes more sense, but I again don't necessarily see that being aligned with the village. Because of all this, I think there's a very strong case that we should lynch Joe tomorrow, as a likely stealth-Elim co-GM role. Even if I'm wrong, and I don't think I am, then it will still give us lots of information based on who was in favour and against a Joe lynch. (Now I guess I'll just wait for @Lumgol to come in and completely demolish my theory since she actually scanned Joe... ) OK, so let's have a look at the lynch yesterday. As of about 8 hours before cycle end, the lynch was wide open. Here's a vote count from that time, just as I swap to Lum: Rand (3) - CadCom, Lumgol, Ark Lumgol (3) - Araris, Fura, Bard CadCom (1) - Adavantos Rae (1) - Rand Straw (1) - HH Araris(1) - Fura Joe(2) - Maill, Lum (Note: Rae had voted on Araris previously and retracted.) Fura responds to my suspicion of Joe here: First of all, I missed where Fifth implied that Joe couldn't speak - was this in a PM, @Furamirionind? Secondly, this seems off to me. It feels like Fura started with trying to prove Joe was innocent and went to search for reasons to dissuade suspicion of him without getting too close (Stink makes a similar post, but is actually strongly worded enough that I think an Elim Stink would probably distance themselves a little more). In particular, even if Joe couldn't talk, how does that clear him in any way whatsoever? It just says he can't talk. Especially now that we know that we can't speak to him through PM's either, this looks a lot like a delaying tactic. The bandwagon on Araris appears first, and then Rae and CadCom in quick succession vote on me. Rae says that Lum could easily prove their role, so my vote makes no sense (which is... fair), and also defends Joe. CadCom provides no reasoning except that they agree with Rae - I thought they were more of an analyser than that, though they might be busy. Elan votes on me a little later, by which time it seems to be a race between Araris and I, so part of it is based on not having a suspicion of Araris, and part is based on a distrust of me wanting to lynch a powerful role. It's precisely because it was a powerful role that I was suspicious - I didn't think any villager would claim that publicly short of nearly being lynched. That said, Lum has always been much more open with claims than I would be. The final vote is Rathmaskal, who doesn't find Araris suspicious and votes for me as the other major candidate. I wish there'd been a little more analysis on why that's the case, but that's pretty normal for Rath. The order of the votes from most to least suspicious would probably be CadCom, Rae, Rath, Elan.

  17. Hell. It's not exactly something most people are looking for, but the class/race dichotomy comes up in the book itself. Kelsier and the crew are clinging to their lineages and justifying their actions based on that, and Vin rips into them for not knowing what it's like to live as skaa, because they don't. Class wise they live closer to the racial line they demonize than they do the skaa they fight for. And she was absolutely right. Edit: and as I brought up on the "is Kel good/evil?" thread, it goes well beyond class and the way that they live, when even Breeze was scared of Kel finding out that he was noble.

I also have a kind of embarrassing story: I took the wrong person's book back home >.> With all the excitement and because I had to go grab my laptop, I didn't pay much attention to what name was in the book I took from the pile on the table. I didn't notice until I arrived at home again. So, Tobias, if you by any chance read this: Send me a message so we can figure out a way to exchange the books. If you won't read it, I guess we both can consider ourselves proud owners of an Oathbringer copy with another person's name.

  20. The main problem with these "if this metallic are does this, it has to do that" threads is that you could follow that chain forever. You say that if they store speed they also have to store gravity. Well if they store gravity they have to store mass. If they store mass they become less dense or lose volume. One would make them flimsy, the other would make them implode. Both cases would violate conservation of matter since there is no energy gained. The simple answer is that you can move normally when you tap F-Steel because your perspective doesn't change. To you it seems like the world is moving slow, not that you are moving fast. Perception and Intent are a big part of all of Brandon's magic systems and shouldn't be ignored. It's the same with F-Iron. You don't feel like you are heavier, so the extra "strength" you gain doesn't make you stronger. You simply perceive yourself as being normal, while your environment sees you as changed.

We may give them a happy sendoff; we may beg an explanation from them until their profile page is covered in forlorn status updates (looking at you, Ap). They might be pulled away by circumstances beyond their control, and we hope for their safe and joyous return every day. This is a thread for them. To say goodbye and hold parties of laughter and tears alike; to type memories and quotes until we're raw. Because everyone deserves that goodbye. And no one deserves to be forgotten.

  29. I found a WoB talking about the pronunciations years ago, and just started using them. At this point I don’t even hear it as E-lan-tris in my head anymore, even though I used to call it that. Now it’s always Ee-lane-tris. The only one I still think of with my original pronunciation is Kelsier, which has a lot to do with the difficulty in pronouncing it properly. It a very French sounding name, and I don’t speak French... Amusingly Brandon, by his own admission, mispronounces it too - despite being the one who created the name! The Rosharan ones were easy; I know enough Hebrew that I recognized the linguistic root and always pronounced them correctly. Most people really can’t pronounce Kholin correctly unless they have a background in one of the languages that uses gutturals, much like the word Khazad in Tolkien’s legendarium. So I didn’t just pull Ee-lane-tris out of a hat! That actually is how it is supposed to be pronounced. Every Aon (Ay-Own) has a double vowel. (It’s why it should be obvious that Ati/Ruin and Aon Ati are simply a coincidence; the former is Ah-tee and the latter is Ay-Tie. They only seem the same when written in English; if you heard them they’d be completely different.)

  30. First, before I get into this, I want to apologise for any things I haven't worded adequately in this post and and the others and any to follow. I don't honestly think Kaladin will Ascend to Honor. I don't think anyone truly will. Dalinar might, but it definitely won't be the same as Tanavast's Honor. Odium agreed to the champion thing, so, for the time being, yes, one person can, if it's the right person. These two things are not incompatible with what the handing off of the baton from Dalinar to Kaladin that I propose as happening. Should Dalinar Ascend (regardless of my skepticism on this part), he will be continuing the trend of retreating from a battlefield general to a back-tent one by not even technically having a physical body for at least a time (I can't remember if Shards can create bodies or not beyond Autonomy), the torch of Head Battlefield Radiant-General being tossed to Kaladin, who continues to do his whole "protect everyone" thing. Some things are cliches because they have meaning. Having a cliche in a story doesn't wreck the story. In an epic fantasy series such as SA, the passing of the torch makes perfect sense, as it generally does when it's used, since it's literally what happens in real life over time. If/when Dalinar dies, I doubt it'll be through suicide. Odds are, it'll just be because he's old and got caught without Stormlight/while sleeping/they just kept stabbing until there was no Stormlight left and he was too weak to Connect to the other Realms to renew his spheres. Dalinar's arc in Oathbringer was about confronting himself, his past, and how he could help with the future to try to avoid that, while also saving and helping Roshar. He's railing against the rest of the world's shenanigans and reevaluating his own place in it. That's not wasted no matter what happens with his storyline over all. This is the worst possible thing you could have said. The purpose of reading a story is to experience the story. You don't like part of it? Oh well, it's a negative experience on that part. You don't have to read any of this. Feel free to quit because you don't like something that happened. Your choice entirely. You disagree with one of the character bits? That's your right. Have fun. Do as you want. That doesn't mean that the story isn't worth reading, though.

Kumiko had told them her name hadn't she? She thought back for a moment, then realized she recognized the name. "Sorry KanMien." She said a little more warmly. "It's been a long day." Rusts her shoulders were feeling stiff. It might have been some kind of phantom pain from being shot with darts, more likely though it was just the stress of such a long day, especially one that occurred immediately after she'd pulled an all nighter in the department of records. "Well, I'm in need of a change of outfits. Shall we reconvene at my place for the time being?" Laurelai said, addressing all of them. "We can plan there for the time being, it should be a little quieter." They could receive any communications via Alleycant if needed so there shouldn't be any problems with them leaving. And of course one of the larger benefits... "Plus I should have some port and wine left too." She added with a smirk.

"Someone's got to keep an eye on Kumiko after all." They proceeded to ignore the dirty look Kumiko gave them.

If a radiant tried to soulcast using stormlight directly from the highstorm what essences could they create? A: Anything. They could create any essence. This is for radiant soulcasters not soulcasting fabrials. 2. Could a windrunner only lash part of something, like only a hand instead of an entire body? A: This is theoretically possible. It’s like how Kelsier can push on a pole and make it spin. This would require a lot of skill however. But yes it is possible.

  43. As someone who is only about 200 pages into WoR, his progress has me super excited! I frankly love that he's so dedicated to actually writing and getting his books out. I bought TWoK back before Oathbringer was out (although it was like a month from release). When I first heard it was going to be a ten book series, and only the first two were out, I was tempted to just put it down, thinking "great, another series that'll start well then I'll never hear from it again for over a decade." Oathbringer released right after, and I actually did my research on Brandon. The guy is a creative machine, and it inspires the heck out of me. He's got a hell of a work ethic. If the series I'm working on is ever published, I hope to deliver the way Brandon does. Even if it's not Stormlight, there's something every year from the man! Fantastic stuff.

All spoilers are fine in Cosmere Discussion, but not allowed in General Discussion. You can read more about the spoiler policy in the Site Rules.
