  1. So I'm finally able to report back from the signing. First off, I'd like to thank everybody who showed up, you asked great questions! Because of the issues with recording audio without consent, we opted for writing down all WoBs right on the spot. So we got prime seats next to the signing table, I pulled out my laptop and typed away. A special thanks goes to Rhapsody and Sorana for helping me fill in any gaps and also going over the WoBs we collected again. The signing went pretty great overall. Due to our position, we were able to constantly pester Isaac with questions and it was great to perpetually chat with him. The reading was from a revised version of the first chapter from SA 4. It turned out quite a bit different and I've already uploaded it to Arcanum for transcription. So, without further ado, here are my compiled notes from the event: First Signing Sorana: Would a spike charge if I threw it at someone with the intention to spike something out of him and hit the right bindpoint? Brandon: Yes. Sorana: So spike darts are a thing. Brandon: Yes, and spike guns are a thing as well. Rhapsody: If I took a fabrial to Shadesmar, would it work and what would happen to the Spren trapped in it? Brandon: RAFO Sorana: Is Soulcasting volume- or mass-preserving? Brandon: It's mass-preserving, but there are some strange things going on and that's why we don't get as much explosions as we should. You can see a bit of what is going when Jasnah Soulcasts air, there are some little reactions, but not as strong as you ought to get. Rhapsody: You have described Ettmetal as some kind of Super-Cesium. After the reaction with water, is there residual Ettmetal hydroxide and what are its properties? Brandon: Yes, it does. There's the potential they'll find it and use it, but as far as the properties are concerned, you get a RAFO. Paleo: Are the Ashynite magic system and the Old Magic related? If so, does the "Old" part come from that? Brandon: Yes, they are related, but the name comes from the magic actually predating Spren bonds. Paleo: Since your books are "translations" from another language and "Hierocracy" is a foreign word in English, is it also a foreign word in the original language? Brandon: No, but good question. Paleo: There's symbols in the temple at the end of Bands of Mourning which none of the characters recognize. Are they from any writing system known to us or did Kelsier make them up? Brandon: RAFO Paleo: Is Wisdom a Shard? If so, how bad does it want to survive? Brandon: There is a shard with a similar Intent. The Shard has realized that survival might not be the most desirable/important. Paleo: Have Rosharan mathematics advanced far enough to know Julia sets? Brandon: Yes, they know Julia Sets. Some of the mathematics are farther along at this time than ours, some are behind. Kinda like abstractionalism is a centuries-old art style on Roshar, calculus was discovered way earlier. Paleo: What symbol will be on the Warbreaker leatherbound? Brandon: He referred as to Isaac, who showed us several designs which are not finalized, but they are confirmed as Tears of Edgli. Rhapsody posted the picture already on the general Germany signing thread. The cover will feature Nightblood. Questioner: What happened to Elhokar's body? Brandon: It was burned with honors. Winds Alight: In SA the Stormfather refers to several people as "Child of Honor", but only Kaladin as "Child of Tanavast". Is there significance to that? Brandon: Yes, there is. Questioner: Can the survival Shard hide in a person? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Do people celebrate their birthdays on Roshar, because Kaladin doesn't seem to care? Brandon: Yeah, there are celebrations like birthdays and others as well, but I can't put everything in the books. Some people care more, some - like Kaladin - less. Questioner: Do we know who built the Steel Highway in Mistborn? Brandon: Some people know, but it's not general knowledge. Questioner: Can a Mistborn use the Investiture from a Highstorm? Brandon: It takes some effort to convert the Investiture. They can burn metals from other planets, though. Questioner: Is Nightblood an aluminium-titanium alloy? Brandon: No, he's something else. RAFO Questioner: What inspired the Shattered Plains? Brandon: Little Wild Horse canyon and others in southern Utah. That's what inspired the chasms. Questioner: Any tips on creating a Magic System? Brandon: Focus on what the powers can't do instead of what they can do. It's the boundaries that get interesting. Lookup Sanderson's Laws. Paleo: Will the Warbreaker leatherbound contain the Nalthis essay? Isaac: No, but the Arcanum Unbounded Leatherbound will contain it. Questioner: Is Doomslug capable of using Hypertravel as well as taking matter with her? Brandon: RAFO. Doomslug will be very important to the next book. She's very relevant to the events of the book coming out in December. Questioner: What's the most challenging part about art? Isaac: [partial answer] Getting things to look realistic. Took a lot of practice. Questioner: The Voidbinding chart has a red ruby with two imprisoned voidbringers who have no connection to the voidbinding skills. Is this the because they are imprisoned or are they in need of the other Voidbringers to unleash their powers like the lightnings are trying to illustrate? Brandon: RAFO Zykai: Did the Shin use Honorblades in their invasions? If yes, did they also use Surges? Brandon: Yes and yes. Questioner: Ambition wasn't splintered in the contest with Odium. Is there a reason why he hasn't chosen another Avatar yet? Brandon: Yes. Questioner: How is Ashyn earth-like given its orbit? It should be even less habitable than Roshar. Brandon: The Rosharan system was manifactured for a specific purpose. The position of the moons isn’t stable and even the continent itself might eventually vanish. Questioner: Was there a good reason for Elhokar to not speak his First Oath earlier or was he just plain stupid? Brandon: He wasn't ready yet. It can take a long time and he was hung up on his insecurities. Questioner: Why did Adolin kill Sadeas? Brandon: He's young and hotheaded unlike Dalinar. Sishal: How was Glys corrupted? Was the process similar to the lesser spren, like painspren? Brandon: It is similar, but Glys is self-aware, so slightly different process, but similar. It is through Sja-Anat. Sishal: Did Sja-Anat have to convince Glys to corrupt him then? (This previously said "Will we see other Radiant spren?", but @Sishal contacted me to have it corrected) Brandon: RAFO Questioner: How do you write the beginnings to your books? Brandon: Beginnings are hard. Usually I write one, trash it and come back to it when I finished the book. After I finished the book, I try to find the perfect beginning. Questioner: Are there certain topics you want to avoid in your writing? Brandon: There certainly are some topics I'd never cover, like certain types of abuse. Questioner: [inaudible - something about Shallan's personalitiies] Brandon: At the end of Oathbringer, she works really hard to supress her other personas and she will be a lot more stable. Questioner: Will there be a Rithmatist sequel? Brandon: There will eventually. I was working on that when I was offered WoT and just couldn't get back into it yet. Questioner: Do specific colours have an impact on Awakening in Warbreaker? Brandon: Not usually, you just need a certain amount to Awaken. But there can be more due to various reasons connected to the Cosmere. It is connected to the significance of eye colours on Roshar. Questioner: Will Vivenna, Vasher and Nightblood reunite? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Do you want to build up Hoid to be a character like Randall Flagg? Brandon: RAFO Questioner: Did Aginor reappear after the cleansing of Saidin? Brandon: Ask Maria, the continuity person. Questioner: Are you involved with the WoT TV show? Brandon: Yes, I get to read the scripts and give feedback. I get to push the characters in the direction I want them to go. The first screenplay was really good. Questioner: Have we seen Ghostbloods in action outside of the Rosharan system? Brandon: You have seen proto-Ghostbloods, but not after the their actual initiation. Questioner: Who did the Crownlands historically belong to before there was a king and what purpose do they serve now? Brandon: At the moment the Crownlands are the property of the king and work for him, to earn money or to give them away to a lord. Before Gavilar, they belonged to some princedom. Questioner: How has Sunmaker's sword ended up with Dalinar? Brandon: Initially, it belonged to one of the highprinces. After that it went through a lot of people. Tidbits from the interview No news about book adaptations. Hopes for his series with the advent of WoT and Witcher. WoT first screenplay is phenomenal. German writers are all outliners. Already scrapped earlier first chapter from SA 4. Read new version, but will obviously be revised again. -> Recording Q & A Questioner: The map of Kholinar looks like a lion's head. Is that an allusion to Caemlyn? Brandon: It was not a conscious decision to make it look like Caemlyn. The city shapes are based on Cimatics patterns that have deep-rooted origins in the history of Roshar. I may make a lot of unconscious allusions, but something like the Misted Mountains are a conscious reference. Rhapsody: Will the Threnody book take place in the homeland? Brandon: The book is tentatively called "The Dust Brigade". A group wants to free the homeland of the evil. It doesn't go well for them. Opening scene is all ships sinking and people washing up on shore. Questioner: Shadesmar is an inversion of Roshar. In the Physical Realm, planets are disconnected, but in Shadesmar you can reach one from the other. Is there a point in Shadesmar where I can instantly cross between diametrically opposed points on Roshar? Brandon: Yes, technically there is, but oceans etc. are problematic since there's not enough minds there. There are points, but the transition is more steady than instantaneous. It will be hard, since you're basically leaving the planet when you go far enough. If you just went south, you'd end up on another planet. Kind of yes. Shadesmar gets funky because you end up in no man's land. We'd need to do the exact maths on that one. Krios: If you have a form of manipulating your Identity and a form of healing. Are you able to shapeshift or even evolve your body like growing wings? Brandon: You'd have to do some real work on your spirit web to make that work. It'd take more work than you're implying, but the Parshendi for instance are doing this. It'll take a little more work, it's not just blanking your Identity. Hemalurgy would make it very easy, but also very evil. But what you want to achieve is possible. The Forumlurker: If a Radiant tried to Soulcast directly with the Stormlight from the Highstorm, what essences could they create? Brandon: They could basically do whatever they want. There wouldn't be any limitations, but only for Radiant Soulcasters. Questioner: How do you choose Worldhoppers to depict in your books? Brandon: There's couple of ways I choose Worldhoppers. The background story plays a big part, but some Worldhoppers I just want to be immigrants. Some people you meet, you'll notice they're from a different planet but aren't involved in any schemes. They just wanted to get to another planet. There's groups like the Ghostbloods, but there's also just trade between places like Roshar and Nalthis. I have to be careful to not make everyone an easter egg from other worlds. That would strain plausibility very easily. Paleo: How is Dark One coming along? Brandon: It's coming along very well. It's like Harry Potter from the perspective of Voldemort, where the good guys want to get the bad guy. It's like Narnia was trying to assasinate those who come over to their world to destroy it. The outline is really great, we pitched it across Hollywood. We had a really great response, but no contracts are done. We're planning to release it as an audiobook original. We haven't closed the contract on that yet, but we have an offer. Questioner: Your stories are always so unexpected. Do you plan these things or do they develop as you discover the story and the characters? Brandon: Parts of it are from the outline, but sometimes I want to develop the characters further and make more organic decisions. Questioner: Do you plan to do something like Arcanum Unbounded again? Brandon: Yes, eventually there will be AU2. I need to write more short stories before that. I'm hoping my novella this year will be on Rsyn. Theoretically I will continuing going that, showing little glimpses of places around the Cosmere. Questioner: What idea sparked Stormlight for you? Brandon: The very first seed for everything was a man who's brother to a king. The king gets assassinated and the nephew becomes a bad king. How he copes with that is what I started thinking about. We all have somebody in our family . That became Dalinar and Elhokar in SA. Questioner: Was Shallan's ability to draw intentional just so you could have her draw all the maps? Brandon: Yes, basically that was the seed for her. I was inspired by people from history like Darwin who was a scientist and did drawings. That was part of the concept that made me put Shallan into the books. All those drawings are intended to give you a sense of immersion. Questioner: Would magic from one world work on another and if so, how? Brandon: Generally, magics in the Cosmere work on different planets. But it depends on the magic. Things like the Dor on Sel are locked to the geography, so it gets difficult. The metallic arts work pretty much universally though. Making Surgebinding work on another planet would require Stormlight and the spren are bound to Roshar, so getting them off planet is quite hard. So the magics kind of work differently depending on whether a sentient being is involved, how the magic works and how it's powered. It would be very easy to take some Breaths off of Nalthis, which is a problem for them. It gets very complicated. Questioner: Can there be a mixing of magic? Brandon: Yes there can be. Questioner: Do you know what the next big series will be? Brandon: Right now, my job is to finish things. I won't start anything before that. There's some other big books I want to work on in the Cosmere. I will finish Wax and Wayne and Skyward 4 after SA 4, then comes SA 5. Questioner: Is Iyatil from Scadrial? Brandon: Her heritage is from Scadrial, but she actually is from Silverlight. It's more recent than my heritage from Denmark. Second Signing Questioner: Now that Hoid has bonded a spren, is he locked on Roshar? Brandon:Yes, that is a problem. Something will happen that is relevant. RAFO Questioner: Do you use consultants? Brandon: Yes I do, but it depends on the book. For instance, we apparently got longswords wrong in the last book and a consultant would have helped there. Questioner: Do you prefer writing epic fantasy or young adult? Brandon: My first love is epic fantasy, but if I only did that, I'd go crazy. I have to change basically every other book and like to be able to jump around. Questioner: Where have we seen proto-Ghostbloods? Brandon: RAFO, but you guys are pretty close to figuring that out. Questioner: Is Rock lying about his birth order? Brandon: No, he is not. There was a change due to deaths in the family, but he did not lie. Questioner: How do you name your characters? Brandon: It depends on how much work I've done on the linguistics. Some planets I haven't done a lot of work on that. On Roshar I've built out the linguistics a lot, so I build names out of that. On Scadrial, however, I went more with real world inspirations or stuff I liked, like "Wax and Wayne", which is a pun they can't really understand. Names like Elend or Straff are Germanic in origin, Vin, Demoux or Kelsier are French. Paleo: Is Wax's name pronounced French in Scadrian? Brandon: Yes, it is. I can't even pronounce it. [Various people pronounce Waxillium with a French accent] Questioner: Shallan's and Adolin's relationship felt sort of rushed at the end. Was there a reason you developed it like that? Brandon: Shallan and Adolin are very young and madly in love. The marriage partly was for state reasons. They're really unlike Dalinar, who was in denial for 15 years about loving Navani. Questioner: Can you burn Cadmium to trap air and move in space like that? Brandon: That's a plausible extrapolation, but I'll give you a RAFO on that. You're thinking along the right lines. Questioner: When you design a new world. Do you give Isaac all the details for the maps? Brandon: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I may give him notes on how I want it to look like, but sometimes I just let him do what he wants. Zykai: Squires and people wielding Honorblades use more Stormlight than a regular Radiant. Who uses more? Brandon: The further you progress, the more efficient you become at consuming Stormlight. They're never as efficient as the Voidbringers, since humans leak too much. Sorana: Do you have any tips regarding drawing the symbols/glyphs? Isaac: I always have to copy them myself. I did design a handscript of the allomantic symbols. You might get to see them later. Paleo: Will the Steel Alphabet change further with the later eras of Mistborn? Isaac: Yes, it will. I've already got some designs that look very sci-fi-y. Questioner: Will the WoT show be from the POV of the Aes Sedai or the Ta'veren? Brandon: I can't spoil you on that as I'm under an NDA. They went with some unexpected decisions, which I really liked though. The Forumlurker: Can a Windrunner use a Basic Lashing on a specific body part? Brandon: Yes, but it works the same way a Steelpusher could push on a specific part of metal. Usually, you'd just affect the whole body, because of its Identity and Cosmere magic not working as well on parts of something that considers itself a unit. When you're very skilled, you can isolate a hand, like Kelsier could push on specific sections of metal. Questioner: Are there Windrunners who are afraid of heights? Brandon: Yes there are. You can see with Kaladin that a lot of them would see the sky as their domain, but there are some with a fear of heights. It's like being a left-handed woman in Alethkar, there are some things you just could end up with. Questioner: We see Nightblood consuming both Breaths and Stormlight. Earlier you've mentioned conversion between types of Investiture. Is Nightblood doing that? Brandon: Nightblood can feed off of any source of Investiture. If you're a Mistborn, burning a metal while wielding Nightblood would directly feed him. So you stay alive for as long as you have metal left. Questioner: Why do Vorin women have to hide their left hand? Brandon: Originally, a woman wrote a book about female and male arts, which claimed women could do things like art with one hand while men needed two for their arts, like fighting. Eventually, it evolved and just stuck as a taboo, but it's a cultural thing. It's similar to how some things are perfectly fine in our Western culture but would be frowned upon in, say, Korea. I wanted to add some weirdness to their culture, something that is pretty normal to them, but strange to us. Taboos usually are strange. Questioner: Are there parshmen Heralds? Brandon: No, there are not. Questioner: Will Michael Kramer read SA 4 as well? Brandon: Yes, at the moment it planned that he will do that. Questioner: At the end of Oathbringer Kaladin says that the oaths are about perception. So what would happen, when a crazy person bonds a crazy spren? Is there a hard limit to what the oaths allow or could they just go on a John Wick style rampage? Brandon: Perception will get you a very long way, like Nightblood proves. So you can go beyond the oaths, but there will be a hard limit. Although it will be hard to find a such fitting pair of human and sprend. Questioner: Do you sometimes draw inspiration from real world people? Brandon: Yes, I do. Usually it's a conflict a person has which I want to depict. Most of Bridge Four are friends of mine. Questioner: What happened to Hoid after he met Kelsier at the Well? Brandon: He went to figure out Feruchemy. When Vin found him beaten up, it was because he got more involved than he should have. Paleo: Is Tashi a Herald and if so, which one? Is Nun Raylisi Odium? Brandon: Yes to both. I think the Herald is Ishar, but I'd have to double check. Sorana: I've got a last question from a friend of mine. Could the light at the end of Oathbringer have been seen by another Surgebinder? Brandon: RAFO Sorana: I expected that. We tried to reproduce them verbatim, but it's pretty hard to get everything right. Thankfully, people were willing to repeat their questions and answers when we didn't catch them, so we should be as close to the truth as possible. Nevertheless, all WoBs have to be considered paraphrased.

  2. Recently I finished Warbreaker, and I loved the magic system, but was disappointed to find there was no visual Ars Arcana like we've gotten for most of the other magic systems. So, I made my own. I'm planning to make another one for the other aspects of awakening, but the there was so much info on the heightenings that it grew into its own page. Let me know what you guys think! https://imgur.com/a/4wF3fOj

  3. Wol the messenger sighed wearily as he wrote out his Master’s third last will and testament. The dull rumble of the ball turned debate turned lynch mob downstairs was making it hard to concentrate on his master’s voice. Usually when the mobs came for his master, they were quieter about it. Lord Hadrian Penrod paused in his dictation. “How long have you been with me Wol?” “My lord? At least 4 years now sir?” Hadrian nodded. “That sounds right. And how often have you seen this situation play out with me?” Wol smiled softly at their similar train of thoughts. “Absurdly often my lord. I couldn’t count.” “Is there anything I did wrong this time? Anything I should have done differently?” “I don’t think so, my lord. Certainly, this time, they could not have used the excuse that you remain below observation and concealed—indeed, your provocative stance seems to have drawn the ire of this group.” “So what ought I to do?” “Clearly, sir, the solution is to return to your previous strategems once this is said and done.” “And be accused of the same, and killed for it.” Wol grinned. “What else, my lord?” Hadrian grunted. “Nothing, I’d suppose. Very well, Wol. Continue. The desk in my study with the secret compartment shall be left in the hands of my oldest and most trusted advisor, a count in Luthadel by the name of...” On the stairs, the footsteps of Elend’s men grew louder. Hadrian smiled thinly. They came to arrest, not kill. Perhaps, this time, when the crisis blew over, he may not have to go to the trouble of dying anyway. He signalled Wol to cease scribing, perhaps to hide, and rose to his feet. He would face this group, and allow them to do their worst. The door burst open. Everyone quieted as the Subordinate formerly known as Count swept into the room. Some of them looked up eagerly, others suspiciously. They knew him for what he was, an opportunist who had abandoned Elend for Cett, and now served their master. They knew his loyalty was to his purse, and they knew that he could very well be their only chance at success in the city. “Well Count? Where is your ally?” The Count looked at the group, hiding his true thoughts on the matter. “Gone. He didn’t show up to our appointment, so I checked in on his house. He’s gone. The house is unguarded though, so we will be able to take all the weaponry we were going to buy. A net win.” He didn’t speak his worries. Fynn had been one of the few who could go toe to toe with the Mistborn that was now hunting them. What could have happened to him? “Good. Then tonight, we can start killing off Elend’s supporters. Who shall be the first we dispose of? Jastes is on a timetable, here, Count. And so are we. That army must enter the city.” Senn Conrad nodded briefly. A heartless man, but then again, most groups he worked for contained such figures. An edge of grimness entered his voice, though. This group meant business. “A good question, sir. Let us get to work.” Araris Valerian was lynched! He was a Elend’s Loyalist Soother 2! Vote Count: Araris (8): Fura, Bard, Devotary, Steel, Ark, HH, Stick, Straw Bard (4): Elandera, Rae, Rath, CadCom Rae (1): Rand CadCom (1): Adavantos Lumgol (1): Araris Joe (1): Lumgol Steel (1): Maill Night 1 has begun! 4. Soooo I just came home from a signing in Stuttgart, Germany and I got to ask this question! (Paraphrased, I was toooooo nervous to remember the exact wording. I was so silly that when he asked me how I was my answer was "I'm trembling" ) But there you go. Whatever it means, it's not a coincidence. I finally have some peace of mind and I didn't waste time when thinking about this!

  5. Breaking Jumae character 'cause this is gonna be a pain to say in character while avoiding the letter m, and also cause why would RP Jumae even bother with such a silly thing such as this, he is above such things so sends Stink in to clear some things up. There, I am now RPing Jumae who is RPing myself. So I ain't breaking character, I am just really immersed in my character who is above being confined to one sub board of the forum. Anyway, This is the only vote on Joe I will allow because we'll get something from it, even if they then die to Elims/Whatever-the-collective-is-this-game-when-you-count-mistborns and that's a long word combined with dashes or w/e. Reasons why is cause they've claimed and we can always test their claim before anything else happens next phase. Only vote the Stink is allowed to allow by Jumae (which makes sense). There should be much more resistance to the Joe lynch, and you should be opposed to it. In fact, could someone with time/good memory trawl through the D1 thread and find who first started talking about Joe and a whole summary of the Joe situation? There's probably someone out there doing too much analysis and all that. DO NOT DO THIS. CAPS ARE FOR EMPHASIS AND ALSO BECAUSE I LIKE THE IDEA OF SHOUTING AT YOU ALL THROUGH TEXT, I DON'T GET TO DO IT MUCH. Anyway, y'all are wasting votes. Like everyone keeps going on if he can be lynched or whatever, and all this analysis and stuff. Which is great stuff guys, keep all this logic stuff going. Big fan. I just think it's all misdirected logic stuff, cause peeps seem to be jumping the gun a bit here. I get it's D1 so people are bored, but even still, just do some RP or whatever. If Joe can be lynched, hooray we've just randomly killed a co-GM and get nothing whatsoever from it (at least in public). If Joe cannot be lynched, you have all wasted your votes and like thrown them into the void (or some other bin) and I'll just feel a bit sad cause everyone's committing to it when like why? Anyway, I'm getting distracted so gonna end the post here and let y'all over-analyse it or whatever. Also I'm gonna vote for whoever has the most votes near end of the cycle (excluding Joe because you guys are wack).

  6. Was referred to this group by someone in a facebook group. Was thinking about Lift and Vin meeting and becoming friends and then having them write across the Cosmere by spannreed starting with street recipes Someone replied they thought Lift and D'Naa would be great friends and I hadn't met the character yet. That's my story. .

  7. I'm sorry, but it's both. In systems of systemic racism, class and race become so inextricably intertwined that trying to tear the two apart is futile. Yes, the skaa and nobles had interbreeding to a point that there were no obvious physical differences, but there were still two major differences that persisted. The fertility rates (which were necessary to maintain the skaa population in the face of the brutality they suffered), and frequency of allomancy. No one without noble blood was an Allomancer. Kelsier may not have noted a difference in physiology, but he did note one of psychology that he thought meant that as a whole the nobility should die. Up to and including the fact that he thought sparing Elend was "misguided." Call it racist. Call it classist. Either way I agree.

  9. *Listening to Way of Kings for probably the 7th time* I still get goosebumps throughout. I am trying to get my wife to read it just so I have someone to talk about the feelings I get, or the imagery it invokes in my minds eye. This, is the main reason I came here. To share in this world that feels so real. Chapter: “A Light by Which to See” Kaladin, Syl, the Storm Father, and me. and my heart starts racing.

  10. OK, so the bandwagon appeared on me over my vote on Joe (well, also Lum, but that was a hasty vote made when I was tired late at night, so I acknowledge that was probably a mistake), so we should probably figure out what Joe is in order for me to prope Here's what we know. When Fura asked about Joe being in the game, Fifth responded by saying: And yet, they have not spoken in the thread, they can not be PM'ed. However, I just received clarification that they are targetable by actions, as a player. The thing is, there's one role that is fairly similar to this - Elend Venture, Fifth's GM role. Here's a clarification by Fifth last cycle about players not appearing on the player list: If Joe has a similar type of role, then it would be obvious why they have not responded in thread - they are a co-GM, not a 'player' in the normal sense, and therefore it would obviously be kind of problematic if they were to start talking and acting like a player in the thread. In fact, I found it strange to begin with that Joe would join as a player before since, as someone who was originally going to be GM'ing, they knew many of the earlier secrets. If they are actually a co-GM, just one with a mechanical effect on the game, then that's suddenly not an issue. So, if Joe is a co-GM, and has a role that is targetable by actions and presumably the lynch, then the obvious next question is what role they have. I believe this would likely have to be Jestas Lekal, which is an excellent counterpoint to Fifth's Elend role, but aligned with the Elim team. I struggle to see Joe as a Village aligned co-GM, for a number of reasons. The first is a matter of balance. I think there is a certain aesthetic that would be achieved by having two GM's, each of which had a 'player' that worked for one of the main two sides. The second (and more convincing) reason is that a number of people who defended Joe last round are people who I find suspicious. In particular, after I suggested that Joe may have a role that did not allow them to speak in thread, Fura made a post that I found extremely suspect - I'm including that in the section on the bandwagon on me below. The third and final reason is that I just don't see all that many alternatives that seem to fit like this does. I am in a PM with somebody that suggested they may actually be a role like Kelsier, who is a Cognitive Shadow, and therefore unable to speak in the thread. I... can't see this being the case. If it were a player-Kelsier, then I would find it extremely unlikely that they would be given such a restrictive role that they couldn't talk, period, because at that point it wouldn't be fun for the player. As a GM-Kelsier, it makes more sense, but I again don't necessarily see that being aligned with the village. Because of all this, I think there's a very strong case that we should lynch Joe tomorrow, as a likely stealth-Elim co-GM role. Even if I'm wrong, and I don't think I am, then it will still give us lots of information based on who was in favour and against a Joe lynch. (Now I guess I'll just wait for @Lumgol to come in and completely demolish my theory since she actually scanned Joe... ) OK, so let's have a look at the lynch yesterday. As of about 8 hours before cycle end, the lynch was wide open. Here's a vote count from that time, just as I swap to Lum: Rand (3) - CadCom, Lumgol, Ark Lumgol (3) - Araris, Fura, Bard CadCom (1) - Adavantos Rae (1) - Rand Straw (1) - HH Araris(1) - Fura Joe(2) - Maill, Lum (Note: Rae had voted on Araris previously and retracted.) Fura responds to my suspicion of Joe here: First of all, I missed where Fifth implied that Joe couldn't speak - was this in a PM, @Furamirionind? Secondly, this seems off to me. It feels like Fura started with trying to prove Joe was innocent and went to search for reasons to dissuade suspicion of him without getting too close (Stink makes a similar post, but is actually strongly worded enough that I think an Elim Stink would probably distance themselves a little more). In particular, even if Joe couldn't talk, how does that clear him in any way whatsoever? It just says he can't talk. Especially now that we know that we can't speak to him through PM's either, this looks a lot like a delaying tactic. The bandwagon on Araris appears first, and then Rae and CadCom in quick succession vote on me. Rae says that Lum could easily prove their role, so my vote makes no sense (which is... fair), and also defends Joe. CadCom provides no reasoning except that they agree with Rae - I thought they were more of an analyser than that, though they might be busy. Elan votes on me a little later, by which time it seems to be a race between Araris and I, so part of it is based on not having a suspicion of Araris, and part is based on a distrust of me wanting to lynch a powerful role. It's precisely because it was a powerful role that I was suspicious - I didn't think any villager would claim that publicly short of nearly being lynched. That said, Lum has always been much more open with claims than I would be. The final vote is Rathmaskal, who doesn't find Araris suspicious and votes for me as the other major candidate. I wish there'd been a little more analysis on why that's the case, but that's pretty normal for Rath. The order of the votes from most to least suspicious would probably be CadCom, Rae, Rath, Elan.

  11. Alright, time for me to actually do something... sort of. I've been lurking for most of the day, but haven't had time to catch up on what happened during the previous 48 hours. To start, Bard. (I'll explain in just a moment) Current vote count: Araris (5) - HH, Ark, Steel, Straw, Fura Bard (3) - CadCom, Rae, Elandera Lumgol (2) - Bard, Araris Rae (1) - Rand Joe (2) Lumgol, Mailliw CadCom (1) - Ada Most of the discussion seems to be centered around Araris at the moment. I don't really see the lynch against him. It seems to be simply because he's being a bit stubborn. I personally don't see that he's actively tried to shut down discussion. Some of it also hinges on his stated reason for voting on Ark, but he's since changed his vote. I'm more concerned about Bard, for wanting to vote on Lum simply for a roleclaim. That particular role would be highly valuable to keep around, and fairly easy to verify. It does put Lum as a high target for both the Mistborn and elims, but it shouldn't mean she's a target for a lynch. As for why she claimed, though I disagree, Lum is traditionally very open about her role and abilities.

  12. Let me just throw in my two boxings. Joe has a secret role of some kind, most of us can agree on this. However, what's the fun in a secret role that can't be used? What a wasted effort it would be to have a strange and mysterious role and not have it used! So please, don't lynch Joe. I'm curious to see what will happen. Lum's roleclaim is kind of... weird? Why? It's D1. If I had a role like that, I would have waited until a more opportune moment to spring that tasty info on the thread. Now, of the leading candidates, I don't understand the rationale behind Rand. Maybe I missed something. Lum... jury's out for now. The claim was strange, like I said, but lynchworthy? Probably not. I've already mentioned Joe. And just in: Araris. I also don't get the Araris vote. I get what he's saying about Mistborn; they are the determining factor in the village's victory. Since I can't decide, I'll leave my vote on Straw.

'Surely a group of killers is more dangerous than a single mistborn!', they all said. So they United in the goal of finding the eliminators. One day, they realized they had killed some eliminators, but they had no clue who the mistborn was. Everyone said, 'The elims are still far too dangerous for my liking'. But the brave Drake of Marshals stood against them all, saying, 'if we keep killing elims, the Mistborn will win!'. People wanted to kill him for saying that, but he refused to die. They then started looking for the mistborn. The Marshall of Drakes, having completed his destiny, promptly died. And the mistborn won anyways" xD LG41 is truly an amazing read if anyone feels up for doing it. It is the only LG I have so far truly loved reading after it was over.

  14. Laurelai watched Lita approach the Stranger, her sense of curiosity warred briefly with her sense of courtesy. Eventually courtesy won out, Lita had asked for some privacy after all, there wasn't much point in asking if she was just going to try to spy on her anyway. And she doubted any attempted eavesdropping would go unnoticed by the Stranger anyway. Her eyes focussed back on KanMien as the kandra approached and spoke briefly with Kumiko. Kandra could be interesting, those in the DA tended to be a little more varied than those found outside. "Yes" She finally replied as Lita finished her own conversation and started heading back. "I needed to talk to you about some assistance. We've all had some experience with the Department of Counter Intelligence yes? Well they're looking for people to investigate the situation a little more, gather some more information. It seems that between us we have a somewhat diverse pool of talent, would you care to come along for the ride?"

  15. People..are allowed to have strongly felt opinions about what will happen in future books. Obviously we don't actually know what will happen, but we have strong opinions about what will happen. Generally I read "X is going to happen" in these discussions as "I think X is going to happen". People tend to phrase things strongly when they feel strongly about them. And we are all here because we love these books and have strong feelings about them. Otherwise we wouldn't bother right? We could hedge our bets and say "I think" all the time, but this is a fan forum not a scientific conference requiring that level of rigour.

  20. I have been summoned. I think. Ok, well the first thing you need to think is whether your actions affect anything. If they do, you exist. Right? I mean, if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be here typing this, therefore you must exist, because your actions have impact. But then again, how are you sure that this is actually an impact? What if I'm a figment of your imagination? In that case, you imagined this entire post, which means you really didn't affect anything. Which means you don't exist. It's like the Truman show. This entire website just might be your mind playing tricks on you. Maybe none of us actually exist, and we're just made to look like we do, all to fool you. But as another sentient human being (I think) I can safely tell you I do exist, and so I'm not a figmen tof your imagination. But then how do you know whether I'm telling the truth, or just telling you what you want to hear because of my innate programming to do so? You don't know, so its a matter of trust. Maybe your entire life is a simulation generated by you. But in that case, you'd still exist, its just that nothing else would. So proposal two: You're just a figment of my imagination. Think about it. I mean, I'm the only one who truly knows if I exist or not, so maybe this whole website, maybe my entire life is just my consciousness paying a big joke, and all of you are just simulations, like people in a dream. Characters in a dream don't exist in real life, do they? So maybe I'm in a coma or something and this is a big dream, so you don't exist. But you say you can think, so maybe its similar to a computer having an AI, where the characters in my complicate dream can think for themselves and ask questions like this. Which brings up a question (does AI exist? I think so). But proposal three: It's not you or me. Why do we matter? For all we know, we could be in the coma-dream of some journalist girl from China, or literally any one of the many coma-induced people on the planet. And we just think we can think, but we're really simulations that think we're smart. But then, if your just a character in some random person's dream, and I am too, do you still exist? Because even if we're just people in a dream, you're question still affected me. Who knows, maybe in the 'real' world you don't have an effect, if you're entire existence really is in some random dream, but you still cause an effect in the dream. Which opens up another a question. If we are all in a dream, but we still effect each other, does that mean we exist? Who cares if it doesn't effect the non-dream world, but we have an effect within this world, which means, that even if you don't exist in the real sense, you exist in another sense, which means the only way for you to not exist is if you were the only person in a dream, which isn't so, because I'm interacting with you. So either we both exist, or we both don't, and either way, you're question led to this answer, which means you definitively do exist, in some sense or the other. Tl;dr: You exist. I think. But if I don't exist either, does my thought really matter?

We may give them a happy sendoff; we may beg an explanation from them until their profile page is covered in forlorn status updates (looking at you, Ap). They might be pulled away by circumstances beyond their control, and we hope for their safe and joyous return every day. This is a thread for them. To say goodbye and hold parties of laughter and tears alike; to type memories and quotes until we're raw. Because everyone deserves that goodbye. And no one deserves to be forgotten.

Everything I've done makes sense to me, and I'm not sure any explanation I can give will help at this point. It would just be a long rambling post addressing random concerns people have that I don't think are justified. I think the only read I have is that Fura is village, but I haven't been taking notes so I can't find the post that made me think that. Fortunately, Hadrian has become relatively comfortable with being killed by mobs, and he is pretty embarrassed with how his ball turned out, so he's happy to step out for a while. Edit: Maybe one thing to think on is: If you were an elim, would you do the things I've been doing? If yes, go ahead and lynch me.

  30. Bard, what you are forgetting, is a D1 roleclaim would be super risky for Vin. Vin would have results, but only for 1 day. They could fake a second one on Zane, but after that they have nothing. And even doing that would risk exposing Zane. If Lumgol is Vin, we ask her for her results D3 (or a couple trusted villagers ask her that night). She will be caught if Vin. Maill, yeah, I made a couple exaggerations for the purpose of saying that sort of in charecter. xD Araris, people have definitely done stuff this game. Random votes should be easy to move, yet it seems it takes a lot of effort for you to move yours. Lum responded to your question, and while she didnt have definitive answers, she posed ideas and tried to start a conversation. That is something that counters why you put your vote down in the first place. I dont believe I criticized you for voting on her, but for keeping your vote on her after she addressed why you voted on her. Everyone voting on Joe, I genuinely think Joe cant talk in thread. I plan on trying to PM him tonight, and would like it if you all dont mess that up. : P (granted, I am not positive he will respond to PMs eather... ) Why am I so sure he cant speak in the thread? A couple reasons. 1. When I tagged him asking if he was playing, he was in the thread. He was also lurking almost the entire first half of the day. A "are you playing this game" is pretty easy, and Joe historically has not completely avoided posting. So I believe something stopped him. 2. He was a co-gm at one point. If he know some or all of the games secrets, it would make sense to somehow prevent him from spilling them. 3. Name ISNT IN THE PLAYER LIST. What does this mean? Can we even lynch him? Idk. 4. Fifth implied that he couldn't speak. He heavily implied Joe could only interact with us INDIRECTLY. Speaking in thread, would be directly influencing the game. Do you disagree? #4 should be good enough for everyone to remove their votes from Joe. If you want to vote on Joe just to see if he can be lynched... I can understand that. But what if he can be lynched? I suspect he will be a powerful asset, and I dont want him dead.

  33. 2016? Was I on the forum back then? I can't remember. After reading, this is definitely my first time through Overall Some fairly minor quibbles below. Generally I liked it and thought the pacing was good, though the action could be cut down perhaps in favor of a more robust ending. I appreciate that M's disappearance didn't head into fridging territory! As a short I think it's pretty well rounded and the MC comes across well. The NEU has me fascinated and I would love more info about this (though the amount of info in the short is just perfect). This x 1000 I also stumbled here. This also confused me Also agree with both of these. I think my confusion in the later pages contributed to my action fatigue. As I go - pg 3: lot of POV changes. Trying to stick with it - pg 4: old cooking oil is a VERY good smell to conure. Really cements me in the story - "It doesn't trust me to think..." this is a great line - I'm having a hard time understanding why M keeps having sex with our MC when he can't remember. It's jarring me from the story and I wonder if we could have a bit more about their relationship up front. Right now it's a little... male fantasy? That's not quite right but something isn't gelling - pg 8: the dialogue after the sex scene helps, but I still think a bit more earlier would be good - pg 12: I'm starting to wonder about through lines. The narrative is engaging so I'm fine to go on, but wanted to let you know that I'm starting to get just a bit antsy - the NEU turning off is a great twist! - okay question: if all cops have something imbedded in them, can't our MC use that to call for backup even if the NEU is off? - pg 19: Who would care for what's left of me? This seems overly sentimental since this day he has had only brusk interactions with her - pg 20: SO MUCH ACTION I think I have some fatigue - I don't think I'm satisfied by the ending. I want more closure

  36. I do remember this one from before, and from what I can remember, this one is better. However, I was pretty confused for the first few pages. I really liked the middle, then was confused again at the end. My main gripe is that we don't get the answer to the big question in the story: why/how did the NEU get switched off? As far as I can tell, everything goes back to normal at the end, so I assume he won? What happened to M? she disappears in the elevator, and then we have to assume she's ok from the last sentence, minus an ear. The other big question I have (and I'm aware this sort of invalidates the premise) is why can't the NEU just update him on what happened the day before? I like the effect in the story, but at least giving some handywavy explanation will help me stop questioning it as I read. So in summary, I did enjoy reading it, especially the middle part, but I'm left with a lot of questions, and not in a good way. I'd like to get a little more resolution at the end, and potentially some more explanation for the device. I know that's really hard in a first person POV with an unreliable narrator, but maybe there could be a question from someone else, or he overhears a conversation or something? It's not like anyone needs to keep silent around him, since he'll just forget everything the next day. Notes while reading: pg 2: "Shuffling, pony-tailed man pushed his garbage cart" --got caught on the opening sentence. I think you mean "pony-tailed man" as a surrogate name, but I had to read it a couple times. I'd say "the pony-tailed man" to avoid the reader stumbling on the first sentence. pg 3: the interlude here is from technological interface, I assume? A bit hard to get through so close to the beginning, but I'm willing to give it a shot. pg 3: "The kernel whispers, reminding me I'm a policeman" --ah yes, I do vaguely remember this one from the last time you submitted. pg 5: "There’s a protocol because when I wake up, the last thing I remember is the day before they fitted the..." --ok, starting to get the hang of this one, but it's a deep dive in right at the beginning. pg 5: Did not understand the brief interlude on this page. pg 6: "I like to keep them guessing " --current question: was this something voluntary, was he pressed into service, or was there brain damage that caused the device to be fitted in his head? pg 6: "I wonder if the NEU has its own eyes, watching me, seeing what I see." --sooo, what exactly is it, then? I was thinking it was a bionic interface, but this makes me think it's remote, somehow. pg 13: "unhurriedly ease" --unhurried? pg 13: "shred the low buzz of travel" --what is "the low buzz of travel?" pg 13-14: The blocking here is a little scattered. I suppose that's for the effect of the fight, but I'm not really sure where anyone is. Are they in a hallway? pg 15: "They’re cutting a hole" --who is cutting what hole? Blocking is still kind of confused here. pg 17: "we all know what it is as the captain returns. M’s earlobe bloodies his fingers. --he's holding Marie's earlobe? Oooh...so it somehow got cut off because that's where the tracker is. Took me a minute to get this. Could be clearer. pg 18: "He glances down at the piece of M’s ear in his hands." --so does this mean she was in the coffin? I thought the girl from the beginning was. pg 18: "Without the NEU, I’m no more use to them than a Citroen full of backup." --There's a lack of a question here. We still don't know why it switched off, and he's not even questioning it. Seems like he would be freaking out a lot more, or asking the Mor. if he knows what's going on. pg 19/20: What leap of logic possessed him to rip up a street sign? Is he going to hit someone with it? But then he drops it and has a gun again? Confused. pg 20: He seems to be actively loosing his memory again, but we never got the mechanism for why the device was installed. Did he have brain damage?

  40. Rhaegal's death didn't have nearly as much impact for me as Viserion's did. And it would have been so easy for them to make it somewhat plausible. We saw at the beginning of the episode that Rhaegal hasn't completely recovered from the Battle of Winterfell. So you could have had the ships fire a bolt or two, and Dany takes Drogon up out of their range. Rhaegal tries to follow, but it's obvious that he's struggling to gain altitude, and he just can't climb fast enough. That would have worked fine, and shouldn't have taken much more effort than what they actually did. Cersei's death felt really anticlimactic to me too. Supposedly, Dany burning KL is one of the plot points GRRM gave the showrunners. But I feel like the books are already setting up a tension between her desire to build a better world and the "Fire and Blood" ethos of the Targs. She thinks about how she just wants to have peace and plant trees, but "dragons plant no trees." She has that dream/vision where she hears someone telling her to "remember your words, remember what you are." And there's probably another book and a half to go before we get to the downfall of KL. I think the books will have a good setup for Mad Queen Dany if that's where GRRM goes, but the show just didn't give any buildup at all. (And it's also possible that the context of her burning the city will be different. Maybe they don't surrender and she chooses to attack, accepting that there will be collateral damage. Maybe she tries to do targeted strikes on military barracks, but Cersei's hid caches of wildfire so the whole city goes up in flames. Maybe there's a plague in the city and she has to make a terrible choice about whether to risk it spreading.) Regardless, I think the books will handle that plot point a lot better than the show did.

  42. Stick is known to be one of the most quintessential beings in the cosmere. Stick can grow and become a tree. Sticks can give nutrients and bear fruits to sustain the environment. Without sticks, the cosmere would be a mess, and no one would be able to fix it. In this (lamely and hastily written) five-paragraph essay, it will be proven to you the importance of stick in a few ways, including the contemporary issues that surround stick, the stick in the cosmere, and lastly, of course, the ideals of the stick. Stick is a heavily debated item that surrounds many of the threads. People care about the stick, for it brings joy and happiness to them, and unites all of the Alleyverse. However, there are many different ways that people choose to view stick. In the thread "Church of the Stick," we see @Seloun state, "But... are you a Frostlands stick or a Kharbranthian stick? I think we all know that the Kharbranthian Stick came first, and all else are merely splinter religions," after which @PorridgeBrick replied, "Truly splinter religions in all senses of the word." One can dive into a much deeper meaning of this brief exchange. These quotes show that stick is cared about, enough to create many different religions of the stick. People are devoted to the stick, and though some go away from the Church of the Stick, sticks are what keeps the forums running. In addition to this, there is the War of the Stick, a war that is occurring between @Emperor Stick and @Karger, over the fact that Emperor Stick briefly suggested the idea of all sticks being soulcast into fire. This, of course, is heresy to the Church of the Stick, and Emperor Stick shortly atoned for his sins, with a vow to never burn sticks again, except in rare cases. This can be found in the thread "War of the Stick," where Emperor Stick said, "There is NO NEED for war! I have decreed the end of all Stick burning." All of these pieces of evidence go to show that people care about the stick, and show how it affects their everyday lives. Consequentially, because the stick is such an important matter in the forums, it has become an even larger matter in the cosmere. As @Draconis so beautifully put it, "In the beginning there were three realms, and never did they meet. In time, there grew a tree, with roots in the physical, branches in the cognitive, and leaves in the spiritual," as is found in the aforementioned "Church of the Stick" thread. This tree brought forth incredible numbers of stickbinders (who will be addressed in the next paragraph) all of which have become loyal and faithful to the wonderful cause of the stick: to unite everyone. Also, sticks have been found all over the cosmere in cannon books. For example, in Elantris, Lastly, one must acknowledge the Ideals of the Stick. They read as follows, "1. Stick before fire. Stick before fire. Stick still before fire. 2. Thou art a stick. 3. Thou art not fire. 4. Thou shalt be a stick, even when others claim thou art fire. 5. Thou shalt stand firm in thy belief of stickdom," (spoke by @PorridgeBrick in the "Church of the Stick." The stick is a peaceful being, for all it wants is to grow and to spread, and to bring happiness to all that it goes to. To blaspheme against the stick is a sin, for the stick only brings joy and happiness. In addition to this, stick is opposed to fire, the common enemy of us all, as is evident in its ideals. Without stick, the 17th Shard would not be the happy and joyful place that it is today. To conclude, stick is unequivocally the most important thing in theses forums, the cosmere, and the internet as we know it. Though it is true that the stick is easily blown away by a highstorm, or perhaps is indeed floating in the middle of the ocean, one fact has been proven time and time again: stick finds a way. Stick will always grow back, will always grow to be something greater, and will always keep this forum alive. Stick was never meant to bring upon itself the doubt and hate from the forums, despite its peaceful and happy ways. Stick was meant to grow. Hopefully you enjoyed this and I have converted you from your heathen ways

  46. I'm down for a Pokemon battle anyday. Alleyverse is a large Free Form Roleplay on the Shard based around Brandon's works. I've considered joining, but have never had a reason to.

  48. THIS IS AMAZING. I needed this... Honestly, though– these jokes are so good that I just can't Handel them. Q: What's the difference between an accompanist and silence? A: You recognize the silence. Funny story: So I'm a pianist, and I accompany a lot of friends who sing. Once, I accompanied a friend during a performance. I literally learned the part to the song in ten minutes, and didn't mess up at all, so I was really proud of myself. After the show, a lady came up to us. She told my friend: "Oh my goodness, your voice is amazing. Your singing brought me to tears. I can't believe how talented you are." She turned to me. "You are so, so lucky to have such a talented friend." Generally, I rant to people and they're like "So? You're just the accompaniment." #SAVE THE ACCOMPANIST BECAUSE WE'RE AWESOME TOO I do sing, though, so I get that it's really satisfying to get complimented for your voice. Q: What's the difference between Kanye and a pianist? A: Kanye has a smaller ego. Q: Why was the singer always dizzy? A: They thought the world was revolving around them.
