  1. First of all, know that all of you have my love and support. Mental health has affected me relatively little and honestly most people I know who have mental conditions have it much worse than I do, but nonetheless I guess I'll step in and share my story as well. I have Asperger's and it's mild even for AS, though there's still ways it affects me in my daily life, mostly small things such as hesitating for a solid 3 seconds while sifting for an appropriate response to "How are you?". It's hard sometimes feeling like there's some kind of wall that prevents me from connecting with people and vice versa but honestly I've improved so much as a person throughout my life and this year has been one of my happiest so far. Finding online communities has helped immensely, as typing lets me express myself freely without the difficulty of maintaining spoken conversations and I've met so many AWESOME people who are kind, welcoming, fun, supportive, and share my obsessions Roleplaying and SE especially have been amazing in helping me find and express myself. Not many people IRL know that I have Asperger's because of the stigma around it and the fact that people will probably judge me differently if they think about me that way. Here, though, you guys are so accepting and I feel safe here. Again. I love all of you. I am here if you ever need to vent about something. I'm far from perfect but I promise that I'll listen.

  2. Aftermath- The Dawn of Enlightenment The Stormfather rumbled above Celebrant. His children had gone quiet in despair, instead of choosing to fight against the children of Sja-Anat. More than anything, the Stormfather was angry. Angry at Sja-Anat for taking his children, even going so far as to corrupt one of the Honorspren he had made with his own hands. And so the Stormfather summoned his power. The spren in Celebrant heard something they had never heard before. Thunder. And as thunder rolled, a highstorm, which would never normally form in Shadesmar, began to form above the city. A stationary highstorm, smaller than those that raged over the physical realm, but still more than the city ever really needed to deal with. Both Enlightened and normal spren were at risk. Lightning struck the city, burning structures, and many spren began fleeing on boats. And the Stormfather continued to rage, for he wanted Sja-Anat to appear and protect her children. Sja-Anat would be doing no such thing. She was away, resting after her enormous exhaustion of her power. And the enlightened spren weren't going to be getting any help. However, the enlightened spren also held a secret. A secret only they, and other children of Sja-Anat knew. They no longer wanted to work for Odium. No, they wanted to live their lives. And as a result, they had mostly bonded humans. The two leaders of the Enlightened spren shepherded the other two, more fragile spren around. A cryptic with a Lightweaver attacked them with illusions, and the Dustbringer along with Fyrul struck him with a blast of Division. The Lightweaver was sent reeling. The enlightened inkspren, Meladian, led her radiant down into the prison, where all the hurt and imprisoned spren were. They looked at the enlightened spren in shock, anger, and desperation. The city was being destroyed by the Stormfather, and they had no escape. The Dustbringer unleashed another blast of division, destroying the cells. "Come on, we have to leave now if we aren't going to be destroyed!" shouted the Truthspren. He and his truthwatcher were recent converts, but understood that if the stormfather killed these spren, it would be a serious problem. "Oh no you won't be doing anything of the sort." A stern voice said. Ji. He had dodged their previous attempt to get him out of the picture. His radiant cast seeds on the ground, and vines seized the enlightened spren. Above, a voice could be heard. You will be destroyed for what you have done to my children. "GRAB ON!" shouted the Elsecaller to the injured spren, recently freed from their cells. They did so, and the Elsecaller glowed. The Edgedancer lunged at them. A pillar of light. A bolt of lightning. KRAKA-KABOOM. It took some time for the dust to clear from the building. The edgedancer was badly injured. Half of the city of Celebrant was either on fire or badly damaged by the intense winds of the storm, which was also blowing around beads like nothing else. Finally, the storm began to fade. The Enlightened spren were gone. In the physical realm, somewhere in the expanses of Jah Keved, a pillar of light appeared. 3 Radiants appeared, joined by a small host of spren, like ones the physical realm had never seen before. They would find Sja-Anat. They had survived, and won in the end. The city of Celebrant was all but ruined, and most of the population had fled under the Stormfather's wrath. And apparently, there was another, the first son of Sja-Anat, in Urithiru. If they could find him, they could find refuge. Maybe. Or perhaps they could live their own life, and find their own Radiants in the physical realm. The unenlightened spren left almost immediately, off to find whatever they could here in this realm of harsh storms and stone. But back in Celebrant, a single spren remained. The Stormfather had left already. He was Nightshade. He and his Stoneward looked over the city, and vowed retribution. The enlightened spren had caused this destruction. They had abducted the injured spren. And they would pay. They would have no home, not if he and his radiant had anything to say about it. Stormlight in hand, Stoneward and Stonespren found a single remaining boat, and headed for Cultivation's perpendicularity. ________ Dr. Dapper was killed! Rath attempted to roleblock the kill on Snipexe, but the roleblock was redirected to Dr. Dapper, and so Snipexe has perished as well. The game is over, and the Enlightened Spren have won in a landslide victory! I have some... strong opinions about how this game went. I voice some of them in the spectator document. I'll do a full game thoughts post a bit later. Here is the full role distribution as it stands at the end of the game. 1. Furamirionind Enlightened Dustbringer Ashspren2. 3. Thanks for letting me be a part of this, Steel! I didn’t expect the game to end while I was gone... Well done, my passionate children! Lum, though she began with a panicked start, made some very good moves and took some calculated risks that paid off. Devotary as the first concert also had some fantastic strategies, along with each of the later converts. I’m quite impressed by the clean sweep here (save for Lum’s own self-sacrifice). I’ll share more thoughts later as well, but good job to the Enlightened spren and congratulations to the true spren for finding Sja-Anat D1, even if you didn’t quite lynch her. P.S. I’d use my typical Odious gold, but that’s a mod color, so this Storm blue will have to do in thread.

  5. I have been rereading the Stormlight books (including Edgedancer) but this time following a theme or character (e.g. I read in succession the Lift Interlude from WOR, Edgedancer, and all the scenes that have Lift in OB). When reading the three Prologues, I began to write up my thoughts about what we know regarding Restares and the Sons of Honor and why Gavilar listed him as a suspect. I still plan to do that but when reading previous postings regarding Amaram’s actions in OB, there seem to be a lot of questions about Amaram’s changing of allegiances at the end of the book: Would someone so seemingly devout switch to team Odium so quickly? Sure, Odium may have shown him the truth about the Singers and the Heralds, but why didn’t it make him catatonic? Walk away like others did? Why would he even believe Odium anyway? The devout can handle threats to their faith. They may disbelieve the source or they may accommodate the message as Amaram did when Dalinar told him the Almighty was dead (WoR ch 67): Does Amaram shift of allegiances mark a larger shift of the Sons of Honor? Has Odium likewise convinced them that the rights of the Singers, the abandonment of the Heralds and that Honor is dead/Cultivation is a pagan myth, means Odium is the only true object of worship? I’ll deal with the third point first, which is to say that I doubt the Sons of Honor have switched to Odium. First, I think people strongly committed to Vorin faith would be able to survive the truths which Odium presented (e.g. Kadash at the end of OB was rereading the ancient theologians to justify modern vorinism). Second, according to the letter Mraize sends to Shallan, the Sons of Honor thought the desolations would restore Knights Radiant as well the voidbringers (OB ch 40). Even if the Heralds were mad, the Sons of Honor could count a success at restoring the KR. Of course, Mraize may be an unreliable narrator but it seems a strange lie to add. Certainly, Amaram shows no hesitancy on-screen with the role as leader of the restored Knights Radiant. But what Amaram himself? In his shift in allegiance consistent and believable? Consistent, no? Believable, yes? Or, (since I run the risk of being inconsistent myself), Amaram’s actions do not make sense to me as a high-ranking official of secret society dedicated to the Vorin church. They make perfect sense to me as self-absorbed, conceited yet highly insecure attention seeker, who desperately seeks approval from everyone but especially those he sees as worthy (Gavilar, Dalinar, Jasnah) and when he does not receive it, he vacillates between needing the approval even more and a nursing a toxic resentment. Amaram is consistently a narcissist. The touches that Sanderson gives Amaram paint the picture: He is magnanimous to darkeyes…but calls them darkborn (the only one in the series to do so). He wants an apology from Kaladin for the accusation of murdering his men but only because it is in the best interest of Kaladin. He laments the unfair burden placed on the Sons of Honor to cause the desolation. And of course, he had no choice but to take shardblade and kill Kaladin’s men. Other observations: At the end of WOR we get Amaram’s only POV. In it, he laments his act of mercy for sparing Kaladin. Why? Because it cost him his friendship with Dalinar. In OB ch 53, we get a scene with Jasnah and Amaram from her POV. He goes from wooing her, to mentioning his mother, to reaching for his shardblade. Weird. She clearly sees him in a way he has never been able to see himself. Jasnah’s opinion: Throughout OB, Amaram desperately wants Dalinar to see it his way, to understand that they are the same. When Dalinar refuses, the anger (and the feelings of rejection) reaches a boiling point. So Dalinar, and those who follow him, reject him while his armies (in their hatred of House Kholin) and Odium elevate him. So, yes, I can believe he switched sides. Three final points: If Mraize is being honest and accurate that Gavilar brought Amaram into the Sons of Honor, I don’t believe Amaram would need to be very sold on the ideals of the organization. The very fact that most powerful man on Roshar, Amaram’s ideal man, invited him to join a secret society would have been impossible to resist. But after Gavilar was gone, the effect could have begun to wear off. Especially after the rejection from his brother. Some narcissists do feel guilt, particularly when they feel they have disappointed some ghost in their past (Gavilar? Mommy?) So Kaladin’s pushback on his guilt could have hit a button in Amaram’s mind he was trying to ignore. I reread the fight scene between Kaladin and Amaram ignoring everything except their dialogue. Amaram is clearly having a psychotic breakdown—not surprising since he has fused with an unmade. What comes out of his mouth is nothing but narcissistic nonsense that cannot be connected by even the most twisted logic.

  10. Hi everyone! This is Michael. I only made signs for the alphabet, i.e. a certain hand motion is a, b, ch, and so on... basically, it uses the thumb and index finger to show which shape is being used, and the other fingers to show the magnitude, so for instance, your open palm upright is E, the first three fingers and your thumb is A, the first two fingers and your thumb is O, and so on. I’m very new here, so I might not have the terminology right, but I’ll try and explain it: The pinky is finger 4, ring is finger 3, and the middle is finger 2. The index and thumb are exceptions. To sign, your palm is extended, facing out. In order to represent the tallest line, all three fingers are up. Middle line, fingers 2 and 3. Shortest line, finger 2. The middle line with two dashes is fingers 2 and 4, and the short line with one dash is finger 4, Thumb positions for each type of line: E, A, O, U/W, I: Thumb straight up, parallel to index. S/C, Z, N, Sh, H: Thumb out, away from the rest of the hand, like a high five T, D, L, Th, R: Thumb crossing the palm P, B, M, F, V: Thumb straight forward, perpendicular to the rest of the had K/C, G, Y(I’m just gonna assume that the middle finger has no stigma in Vorin culture), Ch, J: thumb parallel to hand with index crunching over it. From there you just combine the parts, so for instance, if you wanted to sign Th (which is a medium line with two dashes) you would hold your index, second, and fourth finger up with your thumb crossing your palm. Sorry if my terminology is all messed up: as I said, I’m very new here.

  13. The Enlightened are now hosting an AMA. Not all questions will necessarily be answered, but any discussion is welcomed. Participation, and willingness to swear allegiance to Lady Sja-Anat and Lord Odium, may grant you fabulous rewards. The end of your pain, easy access to and from Shadesmar, and perhaps even a guarantee that you won't be killed tonight.

  14. I'm going to be honest. All my life I thought mental illnesses were virtually nonexistent. Not that they were a myth or anything, it's just that I thought you could go for a lifetime without meeting someone affected by one. I was proven wrong these last years since I've met some children with autism, but I had never imagined it could be like what I'm seeing on this thread. It's a shocking realization, to say the least. So, I don't know how to say this, this is a real eye-opener let's say. But as it's already been stated, we're all here to help, we come here to make friends after all. What kind of friends would we be if we turned a blind eye on this?

  16. Yeah, if a spreadsheet formula doesn’t work for you, don’t use it... I experimented a lot with the spreadsheet and it made some things more complicated for Steel, so sorry about that. But I’m also proud of a couple of things. it made bonding easier, but Stormlight was complicated and messed up.

  17. Ok, rules. There were some issues with the rules, and in a rerun, what would I fix? First thing I would fix is the whole making system. I would throw it out, and just place in the various items, and cut the most powerful items entirely. Just items that replicate other abilities, and magnify a few abilities. The surges and spren abilities would need to be tweaked to accommodate this. But that was the single greatest problem with this game. Second thing I would change would be the percentages for the bonding chances. I would lower it severely so the stormfather's ability actually matters, or I would do the following idea. My further idea was to expand the bonding mechanic to require continued activity. Essentially, you start off unbonded. By being active, you get the chance to be bonded. By being active in the same way again, you can then advance to second oath. Then to third oath. All the way to fifth oath. This would probably be on a turn by turn basis, and there would be more activity requirements. The first bonding would grant you the first surge, the 1 stormlight ability. The second oath would grant you the second surge, the 1 stormlight ability. The third oath would grant the first surge, the 3 stormlight ability. The 4th oath would grant the 2nd surge, the 3 stormlight ability. The 5th oath would allow for you to use a 5 stormlight ability on either surge, where it would do... something. I'm thinking something more open ended. Not sure. But you'd have to be extremely active, and a bit lucky, in order to get that open ended ability. The stormfather's lives would then also be able to advance an already bonded spren up a bond level. It would be a cool way to continue to encourage activity. I would also get rid of the suicide thing. It was fine in this game, but... at the same time... I feel it removes some responsibility from Sja-Anat. Lumgol pointed out Sja-Anat is basically the only one without abilities, and so is kind of useless after using up all their lives. I feel like that should be altered? Some sort of ability that can be unlocked when Sja-Anat reaches a single life, like the Stormfather unlocks his stormlight filling ability. Not sure what it would be, though. I also feel like I should have been more consistent with what the items did. Having the items just have abilities similar to existing abilities in the game would just make things a lot easier. I think... I think that's more or less everything I wanted to say. If I remember something, I'll post about it. Other than that, I appreciate everyone signing up for this game. I also appreciate Joe picking up the game with basically no warning on my part. I really hope this gets rerun in some form, and please, future GMs, listen to this rule advice. And make sure you have a good spreadsheet that you know how to use. I kept breaking mine as soon as Mailliw wasn't helping lol. I will be running one more game before I leave SE for 2 years. It will be a Skyward game, featuring one of my favorite things: a serial killer. Maybe. Or maybe not. (but you know I'll stick it in anyway so yeah). It'll be an MR that'll probably run after this QF... hopefully... I've gotta finish up those rules. So, I'll see you then.

  18. Ok, first, before anybody jumps down my throat, here are the actual document links dead doc elim doc Master Spreadsheet And now, the roasting. GAH YOU GUYS. GAHHHHHHHHHHHH You failed on just about every count. You guys focused on essences WAY too much. Most of the essence items just replicated abilities other spren had, it was way more efficient to focus on the abilities you had and use them rather than messing around with essence items. Speaking of which, I have no idea what a homunculus would have done. I didn't really want to allow the creation of that at all. Anyway, some of the most important village abilities- that being the truthwatcher scan and the stormfather bonding mechanic- were used little or not at all. I largely balance the game around spren abilities, but then no one actually used them until cycle 3 or so. Meanwhile Lumgol happily dodged the lynch every single day, and EVERYONE CLAIMED IN PMs. Seriously. Guys. This was a conversion game. You all knew perfectly well that there was a decent chance the Fifth was either already converted, or would be converted soon. And yet to a man, almost everyone claimed their true role to Fifth. And then when you killed Fifth, he passed the rest of role claims to the person who had already been converted, and had already collected a couple key role claims from willing villagers. In other words, you narrowed down exactly who was the Stormfather, and failed to practice PM safety at all. So, in the future, may this be a lesson to you: if you're in a conversion game, don't freaking claim. Not unless you want to be converted. It made it very simple for Lumgol to convert Fura and Xinoehp, who allowed the elims to pull off what they did at the end there. Converting the two roles I only stuck one of in the game because they were more powerful, because everyone claimed, is kind of a problem. And not only that. On that last day, you had the opportunity to lynch an elim. they were before you. And yet, not enough villagers bothered to show up and vote. And so the elims had an extremely easy time of hammering, with hardly even any effort. Like HONESTLY. I get being fooled, but at least storming vote. sigh look in the end I'm kind of frustrated because I spent a lot of time working on these surge mechanics. A lot. I kind of made up the essences on the fly. And yet no one even tried the surge I was most looking forward to, Lightweaving. I really wanted to see what totally new surge mechanics would do to a game. But I think the essences just overshadowed it too much, and that makes me a bit frustrated. That being said, I did still have fun running this game. It was nuts, frustrating, and also supremely entertaining. I didn't really care about the lynches, but it was just pure gold watching Lum avoid lynch after lynch. That wasn't mechanics, that was just you guys failing to take Fifth's advice and lynch Lumgol already. And as much as I feel the eliminator win was due to some really dumb decisions on the village part, I have to give it up for the eliminators. Lumgol, Devotary, and Fura were shining stars. They did a great job. Levitaph and Xinoehp were around too, and played some important parts as well, but weren't as active due to IRL stuff I believe. Lumgol made excellent decisions in her conversions, and Devotary did a fantastic job of fooling basically everyone. A lesser team would have stumbled over the opportunities the village gave them, but this team took every opportunity to utterly crush the village. Lol. I'm proud of you guys for being active and really participating. Now, on that topic, @Levitaph and @Dr. Dapper. You guys are both new to SE, but I'll be honest, you guys played fantastic first games. I really hope we get to see more of you in the future. I need to post this before my mother turns off the wifi, I'll discuss rules and whatnot in a later post.

Ah well, at least we rescued at least one of every Radiant type except Bondsmith and possibly Edgedancer from the Stormfather's tyranny. I would like to read the spec doc though.

  21. Track every day after school, four different choirs, and clarinet, plus other activities scattered throughout the week (not to mention regular school stuff) is hard enough when you're not fighting a really, really mean cold and devilish cough that are slowly mounting into a fever. I'm missing a choir concert tonight and I feel really really bad about it. All the books I've read have taught me to push through everything and be a hero, but it hurts when you're trying to do just that, but everything makes you trip and fall. I just can't catch a break. Track is almost over though. That's nice, I guess.

  24. Jackal sat in the cell. He hadn't been without his mask since he got it. He was addicted, the logical part of his mind said. It was drowned out by the rest of his mind screaming in anger. He stared, liflesly at the ground, shaking almost imperceptibly, his mind going in between logical, remorseful, and furious. Then the wall blew in and Darkhold stood in the opening. "Hey boss! Found you! Let's get out of here!" Darkhold said. After Jackal didn't respond he walked over and put his hand on his shoulder, "Are you okay bos-agh-" Jackal grabbed his head an snapped his neck. Jackal got up, summoned his staff through the hole Darkhold made and went to retrieve his mask. Walker arrived to the scene almost directly after the Jackal left. "Sir!" The Guards said, "Darkhold brook him out, and then, well, we found him," Walker walked in to find Darkhold with his head turned around backwards, his eyes glassy. "Call the DA. We need them to dispose of these spikes. And get TUBA officials over here to get that shardblade," Walker said, "Kevin, Jack, Henry, John, with me." "Where are we going?" Kevin asked. "To catch Jackal," Walker said. Jackal walked down the hallway, his mask off, slaughtering anyone who got in his way, whistling a bird song tune as he walked, his mind warring itself, with only one thing holding him together; get the mask. He walked into the Crawler prisoner armory, and chopped the lifeless sent to pick up his mask in half. He picked up the mask and put it on. He screamed, the anger returning, his mind shattering, then reforming, to the voidpsren's whims. Then, it stopped. His mind was whole again, the voidpsren back in command of the mask's powers. Walker and the Special Incursion elites ran in, with John, Henry, and Jack, opening fire. Jackal spun around, throwing his staff, straight decapitating Jack, slashing Henry's spin in to, and opening up John's gut. The staff returned to Jackal's hand. Walker ran at him, his katans in his hand swinging them down at Jackals face, missing just slightly as JAckal dodged to the side, and the staff returned to his hands. "You want to do this again Walker? You know how this ends! If you let me go, you might be able to save that man's life!" Jackal said, gesturing at John, with Kevin holding him. "Walker!" Kevin yelled, "LET HIM GO!" Walker didn't say a word, and just ran at Jackal, his swords clashing against his staff, swinging wildly, unable to stop. He surged som much speed that no one could stop him, his skin burning from the force of his kinetic energy, and he swung and hit Jackal in the forehead, shattering the gemstone in the middle. Jackal shrieked at the feeling of the voidpsren that had been with him for all these years vanishing, back to Odiums army, to fuse and find a more abt host. He fell to the ground, his staff in his hands, his armor clanking against the ground, as the Precursors hadn't taked it off him yet. The red in his eyes began to dim. "HOW COULD YOU DO THIS!" Walker yelled at him, kicking him off his hands and knees to the ground, "I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!"

  27. As far as I am aware, you are, in fact, fully capable of announcing to the populace, of the precision in your claim. However, you should also take thought as to how this game would have gone had we all heeded Fifth when we had the chance... You are not the only one with something to potentially gloat about. Unfortunately for us, I didn't kill Lum when I had the chance, but only burnt her. Which I have since learned, is only a minor hindrance to one as powerful as an unmade. Lopen, I saw you as a rival of sorts ever since D2. A good villager, and I am sure a good eliminator. I figured we would turn on each other at some point (regardless of either's alignment), and I was so sure you would've been converted. but we both were in fact targeting each other for the wrong reasons. (Though I didn't share my suspicions with the thread as early as you I don't believe). I really should have lynched Lum over Rath... I was converted D3... So the turn I was expecting, and the turn after Lopen started suspecting me. Which is partly why I thought he would be converted. I was quite annoyed actually, as my burning Lum made it look like we wouldn't be able to get our last convert. Luckily, I think that was the turn we lynched Lopen. Also, D2 I wrote a PM to Fifth right before rollover where I said I trusted him, but didn't think it was "worth it" for me to remove my vote. I then sent him my action instead of to Steel... I was a villager at the time, but I must say, that is very possibly the worst ever thing I have done/said as village. Lol. There is very much a non-zero chance of the village winning this game, I just haven't worked it out yet. Memoirs of an Everyday Person Spren: Article DCLXVI And I look to the sky, I see a golden light. I look down, and all I see is gold. A burning light. It speaks to me in a familiar voice. I realize, what is more fun than being evil? Nothing? I'm convinced! This will likely be my last post this game. Yell at me if I make any more. This has been a fun game. If it doesn't end tonight, this post will be a bit embarrassing though... : )

  28. It depends on your priorities. If you want to read something really expansive, Stormlight Archive. It's his magnum opus, so to speak. Elantris and Warbreaker are (currently) stand-alone novels. There will be sequels someday, but they are self-contained as they are. Out of these, I'd recommend Warbreaker because it's more fleshed-out and shares some topics with Mistborn. Then there are the short stories. The Emperor's Soul is very special and explains some of the cosmere's philosophies rather well. It's set on the world of Elantris but with no direct connections whatsoever, so reading Elantris is not required for it. It can be found in the Cosmere short story collection Arcanum Unbounded which is a very strongly recommended read when it comes to cosmere stuff in general. There's also another Mistborn novella in there (if you already finished the three Wax & Wayne books that are out yet), so if you haven't read that one yet, that's also a possibility. Keep in mind that each series/book (aside from the novels within a series, obviously) is consciously written to stand on its own, so it's not like you HAVE to read one thing before another. Although I advise reading Warbreaker before Stormlight Archive because of some little things, but it doesn't hurt doing it the other way around. My vote goes to Warbreaker!

  29. I would be remiss if I were to not post here, I have been struggling with a psychotic disorder among other things for almost a year now. But in a way, I'm almost glad that this happened to me because it has given me more empathy and compassion than I had before. It's given me the opportunity to meet interesting new people (most of them doctors) and if it hadn't happened I have no clue where I would be now. Don't get me wrong, all this is a pain in the butt, but just because it sucks doesn't mean I can't learn from it, and if I'm too stubborn to do that I can sure as heck grow from it. I haven't been very active on the shard of late (I lapsed in my activity and now joining back in is just overwhelming XD) but you all *looks at @Aon Ene* have given me support as well as many good memories. Thank you. For those who are morbidly curious, I have listed my disorders below (spoilered for length) If you think you might have/definitely have one of them I am more than happy to compare notes on strategies for dealing with them. I am by no means a therapist but I do have some tricks I'm also available to turn profile pics green, I know some sorcery in regards to digital image manipulation.

  30. This is such a nice thing! I’ve dealt with diagnosed anxiety for over a decade now, and over the past year have had some dark depressive periods as well. If anyone wishes to talk, I’m here for you! Life breaks us, but we fill the cracks with something stronger

  32. I'm just dealing with some dark feelings. Life's been miserable, I feel like my family hates me, and that life is trying to take away everything fun that makes being alive worth it. And in top of that, my parents think I have a problem with 17th shard and are trying to take that away too and it's making me miserable.

  33. Just so I don't get stabbed by Ark, (who hath been mentioned) these are not actually endgame spoilers, I have not seen endgame, I have avoided spoilers like the plague, and I also would stab someone if they spoiled endgame. However, I have heard about joke "spoilers" such as "Lightning McQueen dies in Endgame. " such will be this post:

  34. Is Shallan really on her fourth oath? And if she was at some point, shouldn't she have regressed? She still seems to be suppressing her various truths most of the time. As for Kaladin, swearing the fourth oath has been set up to be a pretty huge deal - his inability to do so led almost directly to Elhokar's death. I expect swearing the oath to be a huge part of his arc in book 4, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is his father who helps him do so. I have to admit, though, that Sanderson loves subverting expectations. The idea of someone like Teft actually surpassing Kaladin in radiancy, even if only temporarily, is interesting.

  40. During Taravangian's interlude in WoR he first mentions a former ardent named Dova who discovered the Diagram and forced Taravangian to either assassinate her or induct her. He inducts her by the time of the interlude she is the head of the Silent Gatherer's, Taravangian's Death Rattle factory workers. At the end of OB when Taravangian tells Dalinar that he believes that Dova is actually Bettar the Herald of the Elsecallers. This frustrates me, as I am a subscriber to the well-supported theory that all of the Heralds are currently inversions of the ideals they represent. (ex. Ash the artist destroying art, Nale the lawman a serial murderer, Jezrian the leader a wretched drunk) However leading the Silent Gatherers isn't really an inversion of what we understand Battar to represent. Jasnah, our only Elsecaller and presumably all Elsecaller's and their patron, are a pragmatic group dedicated to using knowledge to preserve the long term survival of the species no matter the short term cost. Of all of the Radiants that we have seen, Jasnah seems the most likely to recognize the brutal necessity of the Silent Gatherers. However, the actions of the Silent Gatherers is a direct inversion of what we understand of the Herald Vedel. Vedel is supposed to be loving, healing and is associated with surgeons. Her order of Radiants, the Edgedancers, were most concerned with the welfare of the lowliest people in society, specifically the "forgotten" and "ignored", the exact group that the Silent Gatherers exploit. (in the guise of healers) The fact that Taravangian merely suspects that Dova is Battar, instead of outright confirming it, leaves open the possibility that he is correct that she is a Herald but is misguided about which one. It seems pretty reasonable to me for Taravangian to mistake one female Herald for another as modern rosharans do not seem to have a clear understanding of what the Heralds looked like, and I am not sure he knows the full extent of the Herald's insanity. 42. If there is one thing Kaladin and Shallan have painfully demonstrated, it's that they not only have to know their next oath (or truth), but also mean it. I am surprised Pattern didn't spend much of the time in Oathbringer spinning in place on the floor. I expect the fourth oath does relate to something Lirin tried to teach Kaladin. I think Kaladin needs to accept the ideals of triage, by finding a way to prioritize who to help first, because he can't help everyone at once. I also think it would be interesting if Teft passed Kaladin in oaths, just for how awkward it would be. Not sure if Teft could get there so quickly, since he still has issues with what happened to the Envisagers (sp?) after he turned them in. Teft might have some serious issues with himself about knowing what is right. Not sure I could take it seriously if The Lopen is the one to pass Kaladin. Those were the only two developed as having spren in Oathbringer, and I don't think I'd like it if someone random is suddenly at fourth oath without it having been developed on page.
