  1. or Feruchemy Makes No Rusting Sense Given Pure Canonical Explanation And Here's a Theory To Fix That (FMNRSGPCEAHTTFT) Preface Thanks to @Calderis for helping me make this theory over a year ago and agreeing with an error in feruchemy that I had suspected. Thanks to all those other cremlings wonderful people in the Shard who kept encouraging me to write this (because apparently just referencing an unwritten theory is not okay.) Also, as a side note, I'm probably not going to reference any relevant WoBs or book passages, at least at the initial posting of this, partially because this is dealing with conceptual points not directly covered by any particular WoBs or passages and partially because I'm just lazy. I might add WoBs later on however. tl;dr: Feruchemy doesn't entirely work given the explanation along with a number of effects in other magic system. Thankfully my theory makes up for those deficiencies and explains them within a realmatic model I've theorized. (If you thought I was actually going to summarize this, you were wrong. Just read the post, it's not that long you chull.) Note: Despite the amount of content devoted to it, the focus of this theory isn't actually on feruchemy and some over-exaggerated wrong it possesses. The middle section is the important bit overall. Feruchemy Makes No Sense Before you all skip to the end and start writing paragraphs and quoting books at me to explain how feruchemy works, let me just say this: I do know how it works. The basics, as I'm sure everyone is aware, are quite simple: a feruchemists stores an attribute into a metalmind, losing it proportionally for a time while storing, then later that metalmind can be tapped, which withdraws the attribute and adds it to the feruchemist's baseline. Now, the most important part of feruchemy is the idea that it's "End-Neutral." In other words it's governed by the idea that the amount of attribute withdrawn is, in a normal setting, exactly equal to the amount of attributed lost. The issue though is that you're only losing the amount of attribute during the storing process and that process can be done for as long as you'd like. This makes no sense because investiture/energy/matter in the Cosmere should be preserved. Converting an attribute to investiture makes sense as a one-time process which makes you lose that attribute permanently until tapped as that amount of attribute is then physically or spiritually gone then restored, a true conservation. However, feruchemy isn't that and would frankly suck if it was. Instead you're losing an amount of attribute and remaining in that diminished state while investiture is allocated into a metalmind at a constant rate for some arbitrary duration of time with no further loss of attribute after that initial start. Finally, when you stop storing you regain that lost amount of attribute and the flow of investiture ceases. In other words, you're not converting a fixed amount into another fixed amount as is usually portrayed, but you're actually converting a fixed amount into rate of change over time. This is not how conservation of anything works. You can no more do this than trade a piece of wood for a rate of change in local thermal energy over time only to regain that piece of wood once you decide you have enough energy. As such, feruchemy makes no sense for the dominant explanations, or rather the explanations aren't fully complete. Finally, another issue with feruchemy are the actual Physical and Spiritual changes that the feruchemists undergoes while storing and tapping. Generally speaking, there exists the idea in Realmatic Theory that to create a change to a person's Physical, Cognitive, or Spiritual components there must be a cost of investiture to induce this change. This is generally supported by observation of Roshar's soulcasting where stormlight is used to change an entity from one essence to another or in soulforgery where the channeling of the Dor induces a retcon of an entity's history and therefore a change in its present. Now while the latter example doesn't actually fit this idea, feruchemy really doesn't since it also induces these changes during the storing and tapping processes for some variants. One obvious example is pewter feruchemy where the attribute of physical strength is observably lost or gained as a decrease or increase in physical musculature. Given the idea that these changes must be associated with an investiture cost, this makes feruchemy make even less sense as there is now also a hidden investiture alteration cost that is somehow being paid whenever storing or tapping starts and finishes. Thankfully this issue is actually non-existent per this theory and will be explained for both feruchemy and numerous other similar effects in the Cosmere. How This Theory Saves the Day At this point we're a large number of words into this theory and you're probably wondering what Background Investiture is. (or maybe you've forgotten those two words in the title and the title has scrolled off screen already due to length and your tab isn't big enough to read it, it's okay I'm not offended) Allow me to explain it then. Background Investiture is term I've completely made up (this means don't go around using it like it's canonical) and is a theoretical massive source of investiture which exists in the background of the Cosmere and is probably located within the Spiritual Realm. This massive body of investiture is basically responsible for everything in the Cosmere appears and is interacted with. To explain how Background Investiture does this, we're going to take another step backwards and reconsider what an entity is realmatically. In this theory, I'm proposing that realmatic entity, be they person or thing, is comprised of two elements: the Framework and the Manifestation. The Framework, as the name implies, is a spiritual and cognitive structure which dictates how the Manifestation appears (basically the spiritweb, but I'm avoiding actually using that term due to preconceived baggage it will bring.) Generally, the Framework would be imperceptible. On the other hand, the Manifestation is the part of the entity which is outwardly perceived in all three realms. It is formed from Background Investiture filling the Framework. However, any investiture which fill the Framework is temporary, returning instantaneously to rejoin the greater Background Investiture and replaced at the same time. In other words, you can consider the Manifestation to be a flowing stream of investiture shaped by the Framework. At this point you're probably following along pretty well so far, but you might have thought of something which disproves this theory: if this framework is in part the spiritual ideal and entities are constantly being formed using it why aren't people constantly being reset to their ideal form, instantly healing physical wounds and the like? To rectify this problem, I'm going to further expand on the relationship between the Framework and the Manifestation and establish two rules governing that relationship. 1. The Manifestation Replaces the Manifestation As I said earlier, investiture forms the Manifestation and is constantly getting replaced as the investiture forming it at one point in time is returned to the Background Investiture in the next instance. Replace is a specifically chosen term, as an important facet is that when the Manifestation is being updated it does so based on the previous state of the Manifestation, meaning that any changes to the Manifestation, such as physical injuries, are preserved. This does mean then that the Manifestation can grow to be different than how the Framework wants it to be. To rectify these differences however, the Framework then slowly changes to conform to the new shape of the Manifestation to bring them both into alignment. To liken this to a realmatic example, healing in the Cosmere can be thought of as forcibly update the current Manifestation to the Framework, removing those injuries from the Manifestation and the replacements as time goes forward. However, as shown in canon, if enough time passes then healing becomes impossible due to cognitive perception and acceptance of those injuries. In this model this results in the Framework changing to match those injuries in the Manifestation and therefore preventing the injuries from healing as there is no record for a Manifestation to form without an injury. 1a. Where There's a Will There's a Way An exception to the rule that the Framework conforms to the Manifestation, it is possible for an entity to induce or maintain a discrepancy between their Manifestation and their Framework. The cognitive component of the Framework can be influenced by extremely strong cognitive perception to create or maintain those discrepancies. Examples of this can be seen Lopen's arm which was missing for a long time yet still could regrow, or a trans person able to using healing to transition themselves. 2. External Writing to the Framework Causes Local Reboots There are two ways for the Framework to be changed. The first is as noted above, when lack of alignment between the Manifestation and the Framework slowly forces the Framework to change to be aligned again. However, in the second case is when some external force, such as one the myriad magic systems in the Cosmere, causes a change to the Framework. When this happens the parts of the Manifestation relating to the parts of the Framework altered are immediately updated to conform to the new state of the Framework. This can cause abrupt and unnatural changes in the Manifestation. An example of this would be soulcasting which causes a severe change to the Framework of the target to change what it says the material properties of the entity is, resulting then in a sudden change in that entity's Manifestation which is usually observed as a change in physical realm. The investiture to soulcasting is then what is needed to change the Framework of the target not its Manifestation, with the change in Manifestation and appearance being a natural result of that change. There is no actual external investiture cost required to change the Manifestation, only the Framework, if the process to change it requires investiture. Feruchemy Makes Sense (Except for Iron) So now we're back to where we started, and with Background Investiture it properly conserves investiture. You've probably figured out how this is going to go but I'm going to lay out anyways. Background Investiture is the source of the investiture which invests metalminds. Under the Framework and Manifestation model part of the investiture relating to the specific attributes is usurped instead of being part of the Manifestation proper and is diverted into the metalmind where it is trapped rather than returning to the greater Background Investiture collective as is normal. When a feruchemists taps a metalmind the investiture in it adds itself to their Manifestation then returns to the Background Investiture collective. In this sense feruchemy is properly End-Neutral as it is taking investiture that would be normally part of the feruchemist and is storing it elsewhere then tapping it for use at a later point, as is described. Investiture has been conserved once more and the Cosmere has been saved. applause Other Issues and Points Explained by This Theory Herein I'm going to briefly discuss how a few other observed effects in the Cosmere are explained by this theory. Spoilered because this post is getting way too long. Savantism Hemalurgy Shardblade Wounds and Awakening Soulforgery Worldhopping Concluding Statement Thank you for reading my first (and probably last) write-up of a major theory regarding the Cosmere. I hope that the point I was trying to make was clear enough, if not feel free to ask for clarifications in the comments. Feel free as well to offer any thoughts you have on the matter as well. Once again, thank you to those unnamed (Calderis) people who helped me develop this theory. Post-Notes A place for any miscellaneous thoughts I might have for those who managed to make it all the way to the end of this post. (I seriously can't believe you made it through this ramble.) Example: You may have noticed that this theory seems to be more about the Framework and the Manifestation than Background Investiture and might be a better topic name. This is a fair observation. Replies To Sharders A place for me to link any comments or replies which I think are significantly meaningful to this topic. Probably will stay empty though. Calderis points out here and here that it is possible per WoB for someone's cognitive perception to actually induce what would be a change in the Framework, in this case making someone trans transition, which would allow healing to actually transition them. Adding this as Rule 1a.

  8. Contrary to Laurelai's expectations, Alask seemed to leave the matter alone and didn't push any further, though his expression seemed to tighten momentarily. Anger? Sadness? A lot of people still held grudges at the destruction from the seven days war. “Are the rumours true, then?” He asked. “What they say about spikes, about the guild that hands them out.” That brought a genuine smile to her face, one she didn't bother to hide. Asking about rumours of the DA was an exercise in futility, there were so many rumors of such extreme variety that it was difficult to judge. Some people thought they poisoned the cities water to make people more susceptible to soothing, that one was false as far as she knew. Others thought that they were immortal, which was generally partially true. And others... "Can you really turn people into frogs?" Lena asked, seeming to be unable to contain her curiosity. At that she could no longer restrain herself and gave a small chuckle. As far as she knew she was one of the more accomplished forgers in the DA, but even for her reverting enough history for a person to become a frog would be impossible. "No, that one's a lie." She conceded, still smiling. "Though I'm sure someone in R&D has worked on it at some point, for dramatic effect if nothing else. As for the other rumours..." She shrugged, giving an apologetic look to Alask. "Hard to say, there are a lot of them. And some of those answers would be trade secrets."

  11. Bad day...more like bad life... Skipping through everything up to the past year and a half which have honestly been the worst part of my life (Already gone through the other aspects of my life here). I was going through a lot of crem last year, which translated into me as a person being pretty toxic. I spent most of my time in a state of extreme distress and paranoia and lashed out a lot to the people I loved the most. Whenever I was "lucid" which at times lasted months, I'd do everything in my power to set things straight. Except, nothing was ever enough and I'd end up feeling extremely disillusioned and suicidal and in retrospect talking about how I felt that way to them only served to distrust me even more (Whenever I'm hopeless I become extremely nihilistic and cynical and say stuff like "Oh you wouldn't care if I died" etc). Thing is, all I ever needed was support from my friends. I didn't immediately become toxic like that, nah I'd spent ages trying to get support from them but they always made things about themselves. I'd mention that they were bad at asking me how I was when I would always ask them how they were- so instead of it being about me needing to be asked how I was...it became about how they were bad at asking me how I was. And I'd end up spending my time trying to help them be better at that. Ridiculous, I know. They took it real far too- they'd write "All talk no walk" on their arm each day- which I was really uncomfortable with. And yet despite all these efforts, nothing changed. I got frustrated and sometimes I would snap and rant at them about how they were inconsiderate and a bad friend. Not only was I dealing with my crap alone, but I was also dealing with their crap. Not to mention that I'd spent most of the previous year literally sacrificing my sleep, my sanity and my physical health to make sure they were okay as they were going through a bad breakup. Regardless, at this time I was at wit's end and I'd become a ball of hate and anger, I was frustrated at the situation daily and would snap extremely easily. I regret this time immensely and I did everything I possibly could to make up for it. Except it wasn't enough and a couple of days after my birthday I lost my friends. I...don't blame them for that, just they completely ghosted me, never said goodbye. Its stormed with me every single day and I still miss them immensely. The worst part is, is that I think they all think I'm a psychological manipulator. One of them called me a gaslighter and a manipulator and led me on this little goose chase saying that if I learnt my lesson I could be friends again potentially. I think they've talked about me behind my back and all the circles that I used to be in now feel awkward and cold. My reputation is completely messed up in those circles, where I used to be considered one of the nicest and best guys around. The fact that people think so badly of me hurts me the most, especially since despite what they've done to me I still love and miss them so much. I don't know how to move on from that. In the time I've had since they've left I've recovered extremely well. The first few months were the hardest and I spent the entire time blaming myself- ignoring what they'd do to me (They'd ignore me for days at a time, compared me to my father's...temper...would often call me pathetic. They'd lied to me multiple times and had broken every single promise they'd ever made- in fact 2 weeks before they left they'd promised they wouldn't leave the way they did). I've made a tonne of new friends, have been focusing on my studies and have won some scholarships and had some amazing experiences. Life should be good except I'm still extremely bogged down. My mind is completely stormed from everything I've experienced during my life. I need a psychologist or something but I can't until I'm on my own- my parents would not allow it...long story. I'm extremely paranoid in all my relationships, have a really hard time trusting people and every night I just can't stop thinking about the past and it usually ends up with me falling asleep at 2am with a blocked nose and sore throat from all the crying. During the day its worse since whenever I'm alone my brain just wanders over to those things and I end up staring at walls or youtube blankly. All this is affecting my studies immensely and I'm falling behind on my work real badly. I really want to get into a good uni and potentially do a law/psych degree and then a doctorate in psychology postgrad. I want to be a psych researcher in the field of abuse...its something I'm really passionate about. Furthermore, I've been having a lot of health issues lately. I'm constantly sick and have been developing nerve problems (Involuntary spasms, nerve damage etc). Last night I couldn't sleep because my entire right arm was on fire and it felt like the bones in my arm were going to jump right out of the skin. According to mum there's probably something wrong with my nervous system since it doesn't sound like something like carpal tunnel and I'm currently pumped full of painkillers. If anything happens to my right arm I'm probably just going to commit suicide honestly, I've lost enough and losing something like an arm would just be too much. Although also honestly I've told myself I'm going to commit suicide if (x) happens in the past and never had the guts to do it, just ended up bouncing back somehow. Just with this, the thought of being unable to do so many things, especially art which literally is keeping me alive...is unbearable. I'm not looking for sympathy or help, just needed to vent somewhere and get all these factors influencing my mental issues out somewhere concretely. Its been proven to me a million times that the only person I can truly rely on is myself, and honestly, its helped me become a lot stronger as a person. Out of all this crap the best thing that's happened is that I actually have respect and care for myself, I used to hate myself and consider myself subhuman compared to everyone else but after all this I genuinely have learnt to love myself. Only bit of light in this darkness hey. Whew, this took a while to get out- tl;dr lots of things have lead me to having bad mental and physical health issues and I'm struggling with them but I'm probably going to be okay. EDIT: I also don't understand how my friends could give up on me like that, surely they could tell I wasn't myself right? I don't know how I could go from being a "stick willing to burn itself to warm others" and a "big cuddly teddy bear" to being someone who's "going to die alone and hated" and a "toxic gaslighting manipulator". I'm so shellshocked by how much crap has happened between us and I wish I could turn back time but I can't.

Rust, he’d already been accused of being a cannibal, he should have just killed them and left. Stalking behind the one who said her name was Renata, Wilhelm took out a knife... And sheathed it. He was not a cannibal. He was not a killer. Not anymore! “I think I am here,” he said, appearing next to her.

  15. Cusicesh fascinates me. A giant spren that appears at the same time every day with dozens of changing male and female faces. I've wondered if its a bondsmith spren that suffered an oathbreaking, or an unmade that got damaged, or an adonalsium spren that got messed up. But an idea I had recently that fits a surprising amount of evidence is that Cusicesh is an Oathgate spren. So I'll call it a hypothesis rather than full theory. "What are you raving about Extesian", I hear you ask, "the Oathgate in Iri is in Rall Elorim". It is. Which is why my hypothesis is that Cusicesh is the result of the Iri stealing the Rira Oathgate. Iri has often had a somewhat domineering relationship with Rira. Iri has two major cities, Rall Elorim and Kasitor. What a wonderful thing it would be to have Oathgates in your two major cities. So they stole the Riran one. Oathgates have oathgate spren in the corresponding Cognitive Realm location that control the gate. What may happen if you physical moved an Oathgate from one physical realm location to another? The spren would presumably not move in the Cognitive Realm. So what happens when you activate the gate then? I'm not sure but something that could happen is the gate malfunctions and traps the spren in some kind of limbo, or perhaps separates one from the other. Either way it causes some kind of short circuit. And say there are a few hundred people standing on that oathgate platform at the time it is activated. People that are about to effectively pop in and out of investiture to teleport. Perhaps they are trapped in some kind of limbo state. Where is the Rira Oathgate supposed to be? Kurth. And where does Cusicesh face? Origin, Axies says. Directly eastward. But what is also directly eastward of Kasitor? Yeah you guessed it. Kurth. TLDR Iri stole the Rira Oathgate and put it in Kasitor. As the spren remained in Kurth in the CR, when Iri activated the gate it short circuited, trapping one of the Kurth oathgate spren, and all the people being transported, in a hideous loop, like a ghost, looking out at the same time each day toward the place in the CR where the oathgate is supposed to be. I know it's a hypothesis looking for evidence, but I think there's some and I think its a fun idea.

  19. pg. 1315 in the ebook "He looked across a sea of hopeful eyes. Storms. Were those gloryspren about his head, spinning like golden spheres in the rain?" This was after Dalinar's speech to the troops just after they saw the Parshendi in stormform for the first time. Obviously, the gloryspren could just be a cause of the awesome moral speech Dalinar gave prior to a big battle. But could it also be a small forshadow/hint that Dalinar would become a Bondsmith? The act of bolstering the courage of the troops, most of whom had never fought with another Alethi army before, could be seen as uniting a group of people towards a common cause. So, the gloryspren could instead have appeared outside of the fact that it was attracted to the glory Dalinar created and instead was attracted by a person well on there way to becoming a Bondsmith. I'm going to believe in the latter. Not a super big deal, but I like picking up these kinds of things during re-reads. Things you wouldn't have caught on the first pass and would have only noticed by reading the next book in the series.

  27. Laurelai continued to smile but the mirth vanished from her eyes as she looked Alask over more carefully, she hadn't been looking for it to begin with, but the erratic behaviour was a somewhat common side effect. She couldn't be certain, but something about the way he held his body, a subtle difference that indicated a somewhat unusual body structure, the type that was only ever acquired one way. Well that's something interesting at least. That explains the questions, and his reaction when he first saw mine. "Cure them?" She asked. "It's not an illness. Granted there are certain drawbacks but unless you believe confidence tricksters off the street then all power has its drawbacks." He didn't seem to have many spikes, certainly less than her, so there was a decent chance he was lacking stability spikes. A useful piece of information if anything broke out. "But if you're asking if we could remove spikes and repair the damage left behind then the answer is yes." That much was barely a secret, when conducting science properly they needed to make sure experiments were repeatable and reversible if it should have unintended results. Most of the other guilds would know that the DA was capable of that much at least. If she had enough of his history she could likely even remove them herself, though that would probably require more time than they had available right now. "We tend to keep a fair amount of versatility, some of us are good at causing damage." She allowed a trickle of the Dor to flow through once again, using it to channel a forgery of herself, a moment later a small cut appeared on the index finger of her freehand. "Some at healing it." Another stream of the Dor and the wound vanished as though it had never been. "But we make sure we can clean up after any messes that we cause." She concluded.

  28. Laurelai studied Lena for a moment, watching as the other woman spoke. She didn't sound particularly close to this 'Nekorb' they were looking for, or at the least didn't seem concerned about his absence. Were they simply not well acquainted? Then why stay here waiting for him? The most likely answer would be that she was responsible for him in some way, or her other friend was. The same guild perhaps? Had she seen them together in one of the guild representative sections earlier? Lena's friend, Alask presumably, interrupted. He suggested that Nekorb would still be in the area before turning to Laurelai and addressing her directly. “Did you... ask for them?” He asked, no doubt noting her spikes as well. She considered before responding to him, giving away too much information wasn't good but this at least seemed fairly innocuous. "Yes." She replied simply. "I asked for them." She straightened her back a little more, making use of her newfound height to stare back imperiously at him. She stared calmly, but in open challenge, an Alethi scholar waiting to defend her position. Her life was a series of choices, and however much she might alter some of them, that was one choice that she never changed. That and her visit to the Nightwatcher were two constants across every history that she adopted for herself.

  29. Alask looked at the woman again, his posture changing to something more cautious. Spikes. Was she tested on, experimented on like him? They must have done a lot to her. Or, she was part of the guilds. Specifically the ones that did these... experiments. The topic of discussion switched to Nekorb. “He wouldn’t have left,” Alask said. “He doesn’t know where to go.” He looked back to the woman with the spikes. “Did you... ask for them?” He asked, vaguely gesturing to her.

  32. When Rob finally to his room, he immediately collapsed on his bed. It was simply a single mattress on the ground, so there was no frame to buckle underneath his weight. Groaning, he turned and observed the room. It was almost completely bare, one might have called it minimalist. It looked sort of like a military dormitory. A single wooden table, wooden chair, window, closet, bin, bag and mattress. On the table was a single book, closed. Rob sighed, leaning over to his closet and standing up. He ripped off what remained of his burnt shirt and slipped on an identical shirt, with the exact same colour. All of Rob’s shirts were the same. He’d bought them in bulk. He threw the remains of his previous shirt in the bin and sprayed some deodorant to get rid of the smell of smoke. When all was done he laid on his bed, looking at the blank white roof in front of him. He was tired, he needed rest. But still, he grabbed the book from the table, and he took out a small blank pencil from his pocket. And as he laid down, Rob began to sketch in the book, sketching all sorts of images, squares, pentagons, hexagons. Flames. Blinking he put the book away, laying still and resting in his contemplation.

  39. All the past oaths Kaladin has sworn so far happened in the middle of some big event where he learns this lesson and such. I almost don’t want it to be one because that means someone close to Kaladin is going to die like Adolin almost did. Whether or not it’s an oath, it’s definitely something Kaladin needs to accept.
