  1. EDIT: The below post was a prank, but it is now a serious proposal at this link: Prank below: Due to the large amount of activity and members that this RP has, the mod team has decided that it is time to move ourselves to a different venue. We will be able to appoint our own mods, have a spreadsheet to efficiently sort characters, and quite a few more features that will allow us to have a more fun and enjoyable RPing experience. Here is the link to the website: http://AlleyverseRP.com/forum We encourage everyone to start making accounts and complete the transition as soon as possible because we will be deleting this subforum in about 4 hours.

  4. At Planet Comicon, Brandon read a snippet from SA4. It's from Lirin's perspective in Hearthstone, so we get a bit of an insight into the happenings around that area. Transcribed here for your reading pleasure Not sure on all the name spellings or the paragraph breaks but I tried, lol. Enjoy!

  10. Brandon's been playing us all, folks. I found the message hidden in a WOB. It's true - the Fractured States and the whole planet Earth in Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners series is part of our beloved cosmere. Evidence!

  11. so, I posted on the reckoners threads once or twice, didn't read the etiquette rules though. I was only on because my brother was, but now my interest has been fully sparked. I must give an apology to all members for my lackluster appearance years ago. I am sorry, truly. But I do intend for things to be different, I would like to make friends and have laughs, for that is my purpose. I will make you laugh, I will not be swayed from this course. SO BE READY!!!

  14. Inspired by a post by @Ark1002, I wanted to try to compile a list of quotes in Sanderson books that can be used in everyday conversation. They need not make total sense, but comedic value is appreciated. For example: Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do.

There was once a man named Wayne, Many different people he feigned, But when he loses his hat, His first words are “Oh drat!”, As without it he can’t stay sane. There was once a man named Lopen, Who’s cousins numbered more than ten, When he lost his arm, It only increased his charm, As it let him makes jokes about one-armed men.

  24. I am inclined to view the 16 shards as Jasnah does: “You’re so sure he isn’t real,” Shallan said. “The Almighty.” “I have no more proof of him than I do of the Thaylen Passions, Nu Ralik of the Purelake, or any other religion.” “And the Heralds? You don’t think they existed?” "I don’t know,” Jasnah said. “There are many things in this world that I don’t understand. For example, there is some slight proof that both the Stormfather and the Almighty are real creatures—simply powerful spren, such as the Nightwatcher.” “Then he would be real.” “I never claimed he was not,” Jasnah said. “I merely claimed that I do not accept him as God, nor do I feel any inclination to worship him." You can have power of varying levels in the Cosmere. Doesn't mean you should be worshiped or viewed as a god. If I can through knowledge and work attain the same thing as any Shard, then they are not deities. They are simply people with access to abilities I have not gotten for myself yet. I do not accept them as being any more divinely superior to me or anyone else. They have the same failings, and foibles as myself, and I would not feel any inclination to worship one or all of them.

  27. “No stormlight,” The Haunt said, turning to see the woman he was talking to roll her eyes. At him? “Unlike other creatures, I don’t need any of of your stormlight,” he stressed his voice to emphasise his words, turning to the woman with a smug grin he was disappointed she couldn’t see. “I don’t need any real power source for my powers, to be honest. How’s that for mystery? In fact, I- I bet you could lock me in an aluminium room and I’d still escape.” He twiddled his thumbs nervously, and turned in midair to the horneater again. “But you can worship me, if you want. I’ll bless you or whatever else you want.” Well, at least someone payed proper attention. The Haunt had found these PCs to be shockingly less afraid of him then he’d originally thought. ||-|| “No, it’s fine,” Alask said to Nekorb. “We’ve all been away, I guess.” He looked to Lena. So, she made money where she could. “You could always join the Forge,” he said. “We don’t do what you do, but you know, we don’t have members and if you need work it’s good.” He dobted poison making would come in handy in the job, but he needed to at least ask. Something about a paper of him twisted at being friendly with Lena. She killed people. Poisoned them. And wasn’t his whole mission this last year trying to stop people from killing others? To kill the criminals around the little Forge territory? And yet, here he was, talking to another murderer. Do you think she’s bad, Shez? Alask asked. Lena. For killing people. “She doesn’t break Rules,” Came the response. “Don’t care.” And if she did? “I’d tear her apart.” Alask sighed. For however intelligent Shez was, being bonded to Alask, it was important to remember that like a cryptic lied, or a highspren abided by rules, with Shez everything was black and white. Follow the Rules or not. Die or not. Alask wished he could see everything as simple as his Shade.

  28. I think you've hit on a pretty key theme across the books of the Cosmere. Brandon, as a religious individual, has discussed some of his views before, specifically in how he incorporated some of his personal views into Sazed's arc in Mistborn, most importantly "each religion having a piece of truth." But, if there is an Aboslute Truth, and if only pieces of religions (non-Mormon religions, from his point of view) are true, then there's a lot in them that is false; and the Shards and the Vessels seem to be, in a lot of ways, an exploration of the mortal's faulty understanding of the divine. He's set up the Cosmere with its own Absolute Truth (Adonalsium and its nature), and is now presenting us with all of these diluted and malformed interpretations of it. There's the aspect you talk about, where the individual Vessels (humans, dragons, or Sho Del) have their character flaws that can make the Shard and its actions worse. I think this was exhibited best by the views of Rayse espoused in the various Stormlight letters, how he was viewed as a bad person even before taking up a dangerous Shard. It's pretty easy to find parallels for this through real-world religion, both modern or historical, of where individuals had a negative influence on religions (whether well-intended or maliciously). Like that old bumper sticker, "I'm a fan of God, but I could do without his followers." As mortals interact with the divine, they inherently become a filter which affects others negatively. (Because you're not gonna be better than God at being God.) This theme also plays pretty heavily with individuals who aren't Shards, up to and including main characters like Dalinar and Kelsier. (Maybe a bad example... let's say "characters who, as of right now, don't hold Shards, yet still maintain significant religious influence." I'll cover my bases.) But there's another aspect of this topic, which is the misunderstanding of the divine itself. There's a philosophical question known as "theodicy." Basically, if God is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful, why is there suffering? If you take away any of those attributes, you 'resolve' the issue of suffering, but you diminish God in the process. I'm not going to try to answer the theodicy question here; I think it's a little bit outside the scope of the topic (or even the entire forum). But I bring it up because that's exactly what is happening with the Shards. We have sixteen pieces of Adonalsium, each of them diminished in terms of divine nature, overpowered by a single imbalanced attribute. That's what we saw with Ruin in Secret History; Ati was a good man, but he was overpowered by something of the divine that sought to bring about destruction. Adonalsium didn't have that issue, because he had fifteen other parts that all worked together in harmony (lower-case "h," let's not get too crazy here) to appropriately balance it out. The exploration is relevant to real-life because of earnest people who lack a proper understanding of the totality of God. You may get "God is Love," to the exclusion of everything else, and that comes up with a religion or denomination. Or "God is Just," and that comes up with another. God may be both Loving and Just; but Team Love and Team Just, only having a piece of the truth, wind up disagreeing on all sorts of things, even though they both start from fundamentally true concepts. All that to say, it is an astute observation, and something that I agree is intentional. As a religious student of religions, Brandon is writing these situations to explore the ways that mankind misses Absolute Truth, either through human fallibility or an incomplete view of the divine.

  29. In the WoK, Hoid tells the story of a group of people who committed horrible things under the orders of a king only to discover that that king had been dead for years, and that they were responsible for their horrible actions. The dead king is discovered in the passage below: “Derethil and his men came out of the tower a short time later, carrying a desiccated corpse in fine robes and jewelry. ‘This is your emperor?’ Derethil demanded. ‘We found him in the top room, alone.’ It appeared that the man had been dead for years, but nobody had dared enter his tower. They were too frightened of him." In the final chapter Dalinar finally realizes that the Almighty hadn't been talking in response to him, that he hadn't been following orders but had been misinterpreting the visions. He then learns that the Almighty is dead. The title of this final chapter? In the Top Room.

And then you realize that you missed a perfect opportunity to have a steel sheet that has “I set these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted.” cut out of it... in steel alphabet.

  42. He's fairly specific that the upper limits of Syl are about human sized, which is also the biggest we've seen her manifest in human shape. Makes me think that others, like perhaps her aunt, that have shown larger forms could become larger weapons. "You've always worried about this, havent you? That the world would come to be ruled by pens and scribes, not swords and generals." (Stormfather, OB, Ch 65)

  43. It's not about "good guy" or "bad guy." It's complicated. That's what makes him such a phenomenal character. Kelsier is a Sociopath and in the final empire, that was channeled for a good cause. There's plenty of example of that in real life (there is a far higher rate of sociopaths than average among surgeons for example). He does have a tendency to just write off anyone who he wants to as "the enemy" and kill them without hesitation or concern though. This is directly shown in the books, and is contrasted intentionally with Vin. The guard Goradel that Vin gave the choice to walk away from Kredik Shaw at the end of TFE is a perfect example. Kel would have dropped him before he was even aware of Kelsier's presence, simply for working a job that allowed him to feed himself and his family. He never would have become the loyal soldier of Vin and Elend that he did if Kel were the one attacking. He never would have trekked through the Ash to deliver the message that was what allowed Marsh to know that he needed to remove Vin's earring. Kelsier not only didn't feel guilt, but to some extent he reveled in the power of his abilities. He would never have been left crying in fear of the monster he was, like Vin did after her attack on Cett's forces. He's a phenomenal character and was definitely a "good guy" in Era 1 because of context. I've just been saying that his tendencies are not ones to make his role as a hero likely, and as such I'm wary of what he will do in the future.

I believe it's at the end of the first Dalinar flashback when Sadeas mentions that he isn't sure if even a rockfall (or avalanche or something to that effect, but I think it was rockfall) could kill Dalinar now. And guess what happens later on in the flashbacks, surprising the Rifters? HMMMM. Nice going, Brandon.
