  2. So I've been thinking about the glyphs that are on some Shardblades and not others. Examination of Shallan's sketch in WoR shows clearly that Sunraiser has ten glyphs along its length, while Firestorm does not. Now possibly Sunraiser is somehow unique in this regard, but this seems unlikely. If Sunraiser were the only Shardblade to have glyphs along its edge, I should think it would have been called out explicitly as being special or noteworthy in this regard. There are ten glyphs along one edge of the Blade. There are presumably ten more on the other. Twenty glyphs total. As near as I can tell, a set of Shardplate looks like this: This description is taken from chapter 26 of TWoK, when Dalinar puts on his Shardplate. The reader should note that there are exactly twenty pieces of armor mentioned. (At least, there are exactly twenty pieces of armor mentioned if the phrase "culet and faulds" is taken to be two pieces of armor, not three. If the culet and faulds are three distinct pieces, then there are 21 pieces and the theory does not hold so well.) So we have twenty glyphs on some Blades, and twenty pieces of armor that make up Shardplate. I do not think this is a coincidence. Being a fan of the lesser-spren-as-Plate theory, I am reminded of the two ardents in TWoK, who are able to trap spren into certain forms by measuring and recording their size. I propose that Radiant spren do much the same, by "recording" the shape in which they wish the lesser spren to remain upon their own Blade. Since presumably not all Knights had advanced far enough to have Plate at the time of the Recreance, this would explain why not all Blades have the glyphs. It's just a theory, but twenty glyphs along a Blade and twenty pieces in a set of Plate seems like rather too much coincidence to be ignored.

  7. My WoBs from this event: Q: You've said before that Hoid has had many love interests over the ages. So does that mean he has a bunch of distant descendants running around the Cosmere? A: RAFO Q: Well that kind of makes my follow-up pointless, then. A: Yeah. (The follow-up was going to be "Is Kaladin one of them?" It's a personal theory of mine.) Q: How many worlds of the Cosmere has Nightblood visited, by which I specifically mean, being present in the Physical Realm in that world. A: More than two. Q: ...seriously? *trying to sort of stare him down to get a less vague response* A: *he just grins and nods* Q: How many shots would it take for Wax using his gunnery to break a section of Shardplate? A: *going into full equivocation mode* Well, it would depend on what gun he was using... Q: His usual. A: With Vindication? Well, hmm, it would depend on what sort of ammo he was using, he's got different kinds you know, but... probably 2 or 3. He might even be able to do it in one shot with the right sort of ammo. So that's what I got. Enjoy!

  10. Record: Org-45671 Type: Organism record Planet of discovery: Alleyplanet, approximately 13 kilometers beneath the planets surface. (34° 55' 42'' S, 138° 36' 2'' E) Appearance: Org-45671 appears to be a large, flightless avian species. Appearance resembles a species formerly discovered on the planet earth, known locally there as the 'Dodo', however Org-45671 is much larger. Of the 100 specimens first discovered the average height was estimated as ~258 cm (Approx. 8'5"). Org-45671 plumage is typically white with occasional gray patterning, however more exotic colors have also been observed. Their beak appears long and sharp, indicating a carnivorous diet, and their feet include sharp talons. Danger: Minimal Initial encounter: Org-45671 initially appeared intrigued by the presence of the exploration team. They were non-aggressive but approached very closely. Exercising due caution the exploration team retreated without making physical contact with Org-45671, as dictated by protocol the team left respectfully and issued a verbal greeting and promise to return soon in case the organisms were sapient. On subsequent encounters, Org-45671 continued to try to approach members of the exploration team but did not give chase to fleeing researchers. An instance of Org-1046 (Commonly known as Canis Familiaris or the domestic dog) was released nearby a group of Org-45671. They seemed equally interested in Org-1046 and proceeded to approach it. After an initial period of caution from the instance of Org-1046, the instances of Org-45671 made physical contact with it. This took the form of gently scratching its head with one of their taloned feet. Org-1046 showed no obvious negative side-effects of this contact, and subsequent repeated trials with other organisms seem to show that Org-45671 is not immediately dangerous to other organisms. After extended observation it was still undetermined what exactly the diet of Org-45671 is. They have consumed no visible sustenance that any member of the exploration team has seen, nor have they consumed water. Exploration team has requested the use of a class-5 uninvested individual (Org-01, Vol-24875) to make physical contact with Org-45671. Vol-24875 was initially hesitant but after seeing Org-45671's interacting with other organisms became more confident. Vol-24875 took the initiative in making the physical contact, reaching up to stroke the beak of an instance of Org-45671. The instance appeared to accept this interaction, closing its eyes and remaining relatively motionless. This contact continued for approximately sixty seconds whereupon Vol-24875 was recalled and subjected to standard testing. Investiture or otherwise abnormal abilities and properties: After extended examination, scans, autopsies and sDNA sequencing, Org-45671 has been revealed to seemingly posses senses not typical of a species. They appear to have the ability to perceive the subjective realities of others. This seems to explain their ability to understand and accommodate other species and quickly establish rapport. They are instinctively able to perceive the world in exactly the same way as other organisms and thus can easily mimic their behavior or assist them with current needs. sDNA sequencing has also confirmed that Org-45671 appear to feed off of objective truth, the mechanics of how this functions or how they are able to convert this into material sustenance has yet to be explored but contains interesting applications. Containment procedures: Should an instance of Org-45671 need to be contained, contact the Department of Research and Development to procure usage of an appropriate security containment cell in Alley 5i1785. For studies which require full separation of the instance from objective truth use Alley Ψ••∞'s containment facilities instead. (May require approval from a head of department if resources in fully-subjective dimensions are at capacity so that more can be perceived/created) Bindpoints: List of bindpoints applicable to standard avian constructs appears to be applicable to instances of Org-45671. The following additional bindpoints have also been noted: t-47 : Located thirteen millimeters distal to the median of Org-45671’s left patella, with effective spiking diameter of 10 millimeters. When pierced by a tin spike within effective spiking range spike becomes charged with Org-45671's unique sensory ability. (See: Exp-15867) s-31 : Located at the median of Org-45671's third liver, with effective spiking diameter of 0.5 millimeters (Recommend spike of size 15 or smaller). When pierced with an iron spike within effective spiking range, spike becomes charged with Org-45671's ability to warble. (See: Exp-13456) a-03 : Located ████████████████████████████████, with effective spiking diameter of ████████████. When pierced with an Atium spike or an iron spike with at least 99% of it's mass composed of massless particles, spike becomes charged with Org-45671's ability to objectively be an instance of Org-45671.

  11. How the KR Orders play board games: Windrunner: Purposefully loses to protect others from the disappointment of losing. Skybreaker: Makes sure that everyone follows the rules to the letter. Refuses to play with the Willshaper, Windrunner, Stoneward, Dustbringer, or Lightweaver. Elsecaller: Is the master strategist and usually wins, unless the Truthwatcher decides to play. Has memorized the entire deck of cards. Truthwatcher: Foresees everyone else’s moves. No one knows if they are actually playing or not. Sometimes they randomly leave in the middle of a game. Lightweaver: Lightweaves the board when no one is looking so it looks like their piece is in a different spot and they are winning. Edgedancer: Invites 50 different people over to play with them. Willshaper: Declares that all cards are now no longer applicable and attempts to use slices of cheese as replacements. No one knows what they mean or how to use them, not even the Willshaper. Moves piece blindly with eyes closed. Greatly angers the Skybreaker. Bondsmith: Attemps to stop fights and tries to make everyone work together, even though it is not a team game. Stoneward: Moves exactly one space forward every time, no matter what. Dustbringer: Flips the board every single time it is their turn, even if they are winning. Sorry for the ittybitty necro.

  13. Let me rephrase a bit, because I can see how what I said is misleading. The things that Kelsier achieved in the Final Empire were objectively good, but the ways he achieved them were questionable... And unlike you, I disagree that his motives were good. That part, I still think revenge and his ego came first, and the long term good came second. I don't think his plan with the Lord Ruler was really any better than what we saw With Tresting at the very beginning of the story. Kill that guy, because it's what I want, and the fallout be damned.

  15. I love Kelsier for the grey area he inhabits. His personality is such that he could be cast as protagonist or antagonist based on the circumstances. Even if he were to become on the "villain" side of the story later on, I'd still love him as a character. It would not strike me as odd to have him on either side in a story. His character is pretty much built to walk on the thin divide between "good" and "evil." He's very well written in that he encompasses both sets of traits needed for both heroes and villains. He is ruthless, dark, self-focused, arrogant, and is quick to violence. He is also loyal, caring, smart, and willing to stand up to injustice. Whatever plot or setting Kelsier ends up in during future Eras, as long as he maintains his core personality I don't mind which side he ends up on. I do think that people purposely overlook his epic dark streak in an effort to keep him in their "good guy" pile, though. Kelsier is pretty scary unless you're in his circle of people to care about (which can be pretty large). I am somewhat like this as well - without the murdering - so I can relate to this tendency. I think part of what makes Kelsier so interesting is that while he inhabits our grey area, he doesn't actually have much of his own grey area for people. You are either friend, or enemy, and the dividing line basically states whether or not he'll be totally comfortable killing you with a big smile on his face.

  18. Record: Exp-15867 Type: Experimental log - Organic Hemalurgic / Spiritual Purpose of Experiment: Investigation of the effects of spiking non-physical senses into a class 5 uninvested volunteer. (Vol-598345, Vol 597560, Vol-597561) Environmental conditions: Experiment conducted in standard conditions, sterilized and uninvested laboratory in a corporeal, non-imaginary Alley. (All-25789) Invested items: Three charged tin spikes (Size 38) utilized in experiment. Each spike was charged by spiking of an instance of Org-45671 through bind point t-47[1] into a standard blood-infused holding case suitable for a size 38 spike. Containment procedures: Standard containment protocols in place, lockdown procedures prepared in the event of unexpected synergies or responses, operating tables preprepared with a Class 4 restraining Aonic pattern, prepared by researcher ████████. Procedure: The three class 5’s were sedated using uninvested sedatives (40 mcg Fentanyl), and laid supine on operating tables. Each class 5 was then spiked with one of the charged spikes (Hereafter referred to as Spi-45671-t47) in a standard sensory bind point (Human bindpoint t-32) creating three instances of Org-01-45671-t47-t32. The class 5’s were observed throughout the procedure and for one hour until sedatives were no longer present in their system. After this period each instance of Org-01-45671-t47-t32 underwent standard personality adjustment assessment and security assessment, followed by an interview conducted by researcher █████. Results: Two of the class 5’s were flagged as having undergone severe personality adjustments during the procedure, however both passed security assessment and thus interviews with each was still conducted. The third class 5 (Vol-598345) began to immediately attempt self harm after spike placement, restraining Aonic pattern was utilized to paralyze Vol-598345 at which point the subjects eyes began to discharge an unidentified green liquid from the tear ducts. Approximately 15 seconds later Vol-598345 expired. Results of autopsy have yet to arrive however initial assessment suggests that the cause of death appears to be exsanguination. Researchers could not come to a consensus on the cause of this behaviour, it is possible that this was not a true class 5 and may have had some innate Investiture that had not been identified and interfered with the procedure, or this may be due to a mental inability to cope with the additional senses. Vol-597560 and Vol-597561 both exhibited increased signs of distress after the experiment and were uncooperative with questions asked during the interview. Both subjects either failed to say anything when asked a question or simply screamed at researchers in a language we have yet to identify. Further class 5’s may be required to validate these findings but it appears that Spi-45671-t47 is unsuitable for use within uninvested individuals at least, experimentation on its effects on a class 3 semi-invested may need to be conducted to determine whether Spi-45671-t47 is suitable for Invested individuals. The two remaining volunteers are to be kept in standard containment cells until further notice. Addendum: 06-03-543 - Vol-597560 attempted to escape containment, subject seems to have gained the ability to discharge a green liquid from their pores, similar to that seen in Vol-598345. This liquid (Mat-01-45671-t47-t32-a) appears to be of a magical but non-Invested nature, possessing the ability to isolate the perception of an object if it is covered with Mat-01-45671-t47-t32-a for a period of at least thirty minutes, rendering it imperceptible to others. Vol-598345 used this to attempt to hide itself and when security-denizens opened the containment cell to examine it, Vol-598345 attempted to escape. Containment Aons captured Vol-598345 during its escape, and after a number of hourse it appeared to become perceivable again. Containment protocols updated to sedate either instance of Org-01-45671-t47-t32 if they attempt to utilize this liquid again. 09-03-543 - Autopsy of Vol-598345 completed, as expected the cause of death seems to be blood loss. Vol-598345's entire circulatory system appears to be devoid of all blood, though it is unclear where exactly their blood has gone. Examination of Vol-597560 and Vol-597561 has revealed that they both still possess blood volume within normal human ranges. Testing of the spike remaining in Vol-598345 revealed that its charge had indeed degraded without the presence of blood in the hosts body. These results suggest that Spi-45671-t47 may be unsuitable for Hemalurgy. Footnotes 1. Located thirteen millimeters distal to the median of Org-45671’s left patella, with effective spiking diameter of 10 millimeters

  19. Of course! I’m 17, and right now I’m a junior in high school. I got introduced to Sanderson through my 8th grade literature teacher (she recommended Mistborn). From there I discovered the Cosmere, and my mind was blown. I’ve always loved to write, but reading the Cosmere books has inspired me to try my hand at fantasy. Not many of my peers or friends are into reading and writing, so I’m pretty excited about this site! It’ll be a nice reprieve from stressing about college and testing and such. I’m planning to study molecular biology in college, but I want to be published one day too.

Basically, every feruchemist should be able to be like Spider-man.

  31. If that were the line, sure. Kelsier doesn't limit it to combatants. And there's a very big difference between feeling justified in killing specific combatants and taking carte blanche justification for the entire force. War is nuts and has massive psychological impacts because killing people is hard to do. Extensive psychological conditioning happens in military training and people still have difficulty with it. Brandon does not write in a manner that disregards these psychological effects. We see peoples turmoil at the need to kill, or the ages of those killed, or the honor of the enemy in numerous places. There is no conflict in Kelsier. When he kills, they are gone and that's it. They deserved it, or they were in his way, or whatever else, and they are forgotten. That is very much at odds with Vin. That's all well and good, except in the final empire, unless you were working i. The underground, you were working for nobles or the government. The number of people who had businesses like Clubs where they could work for themselves was minimal. Kelsier had literal carte Blanche to write off anyone with a job under that logic because everyone supported the Final Empire. That was the point of the societies structure in the first place. And I'm saying two separate things. One, the image of a psychopath that most people have is flawed and far too heavily colored by stories in the media that portray them as caricatures of reality. Two, there are signs that are there and subtle that people overlook. Like the fact that Breeze was in truth a full blooded noble and was fearful that that would come to light. I guess my biggest deal is that in Fantasy in general, where the enemies are fodder to be killed and forgotten, what Kelsier does is treated as normal and not a sign of something darker. But in reality soldiers and police and anyone involved in combat, even after extensive training, has to grapple with intense psychological issues from harming others. More so at actual killing, and often those issues are lifelong. Brandon treats psychology better than that. To see a character that both writes off those he's killed in moments, and revels in the ability to do so... That's not normal. We know far to little about the way the south funcrions/functioned to assert any of that. He seemed perfectly willing to set them on a path to intentionally clash with the north in seeking out an object of power and to hide that behind a seeming multitude of death traps. Sounds very very benevolent.

OB Ch. 38 Broken People If the Heralds lingered on Roshar too long after a desolation a new one starts: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/160/#e2893 The Oathpact was made specifically to address the problem of the Fused from coming right back after dying. The Heralds killed all the Fused who were then delayed on Braize for time, then the Heralds went to Braize to make the seal permanent. They thought that would be the end of it but the Fused tortured the Heralds into letting them out. I agree the female heralds did significant things that we'll learn more about as the series goes on. I'm saying a couple male heralds did hugely important things that it would be very hard to equal as far as historical impact. I'm not saying Male heralds are better, just that I see where @Isilel is coming from in saying in feeling that they've been given short shrift in the books, so far. The Oathpact is a big deal. It's the whole reason for the Heralds to exist in the first place. The knights radiant are a huge deal. the whole series is based around them. One male herald is the founder of both. Being the only Herald not to quit and take the longest to break is huge.

Feldo was a bit wondering, but I did like the sentiments. - I really glad to be reading this series again. I just love the setting and the world. - "She, Sam, Rey, and Majus Cyrysi were tucked away . . . " It might be better to write that she was tucked away with Sam, Rey and the Majus. - Really liked Enos' reaction to Inas' absence and potential situation. It really builds suspense and emotional stakes. - I also like Enos' reaction to Sam's anxiety. - I love Majus Ayama cutting through all the tension with the line "We are trying to save your brother, last time I checked." - "She'd—tentatively—given him some pointers, since they were spending more time together now." - I don't think the hyphens are necessary. - "Beside him, Rilan’s apprentice popped up as if her pants had caught fire." I just really liked this image. Overall, I really liked this chapter. I've just jumped into this story, but I'm already invested in a number of subplots and I want to see what happens next - good job!

  48. I'm trying to remember the last time I was so disappointed by the outcome of a love triangle, yet unsurprised. I went in to this book knowing that shadolin was the likely outcome so I mentally prepared myself for it. Mostly because that fandom is by far the largest/most vocal, so the cynic in me considered that BS may pander to it, but also because it fits with his trope of arranged marriages working out as many on this thread have stated. But I hoped to have one of two main outcomes in OB. That Shallan and Kaladin have a meaningful interaction the way they did in the chasms in WoR (even if they didn't end up together) or that BS would start forming a deeper connection for Adolin and Shallan, such that I would feel accepting of the progression of the story in their direction. And neither of these things happened. Shallan and Adolin stayed as superficial and cheesy as they always have been. Whilst in WoR all I had felt towards them was varying degrees of boredom, I found myself actively cringing at the things they said to each other in OB. It felt as though some of the sweet nothings they would say to each other were over the top romantic for the place their relationship is actually at (which is early on), and I found this jarring to read and more than a little embarrassing. What I may have disliked the most was the downplaying of Shallan's feelings towards Kaladin as meerly leching by Veil. What then was the chasm scene - one of the most beautiful and subtle romantic scenes that BS has ever written? If BS is capable of writing a scene as rich with nuanced emotion as that one, why has he not done so for adolin and shallan? I haven't gathered all my thoughts completely as I've just finished reading it, but I think I'll have to have a reread of certain sections before I go in to more depth on the topic.
