  1. Because she's not a monster and she doesn't trust the Fused. Her first encounter with the Fused was them killing her friends, she doesn't particularly like them. The Listeners revered and valued spren. It's instinctual. As you said, she saw it floating around her sister, on some level she may feel it's her last remaining connection to Eshonai. The first time she protects Timbre it is from the Fused that just killed her once-mate. She didn't want him to destroy anything else. Eshonai and Timbre have similar personalities, Timbre is a little explorer zipping around rooms, peering in drawers and such. I don't think they compliment each other like other radiant pairs. Syl is cheerful, Kaladin not so much. Wyndle worries constantly, Lift acts without thinking of the risks. Shallan uses wordplay all the time and abstract thought/Art, Pattern is a cognitive manifestation of mathematics and is very literal in his interpretation of words. I like Eshonai a lot and was sad she died, but I think the Timbre - Venli pairing is more interesting.

  2. You're right. That was an oversight on my part. Word count is probably a better metric (because mutli-POV chapters are common), although I will note that Dalinar has more individual chapters in his book than Kaladin or Shallan have in theirs. Not sure where you're getting this. By word count, Dalinar is in third place (in a series with 10 main characters). He has 21% of all Stormlight words compared to Kaladin's 30% and Shallan's 26%. He has almost 4 times more than the next place character (Adolin). He has 7 or 8 times more than the next place flashback character (depending on whether you lump Eshonai and Venli together). So, volume-wise, he clearly has a major role in the series, especially if "compared with other characters." If you're talking story-wise, well I think Dalinar is the most likely candidate if you had to pick just 1 main character. He's the bonded to the most powerful spren around and Connected to the remnants of a Shard of Adonalsium. He's the leader of the entire human coalition. He's going toe to toe with Odium. He even Ascended (to some degree)! Plus, he's frequently Brandon's pick of favorite character. But he tends to reduce people's expectations, if needs. With Dalinar, he refuses to clarify things. He does not "tend to reduce people's expectations." There are tons and tons of theories and speculations here on the Shard about what's going to happen to various characters. Brandon very, very rarely weighs in on them. I listed a bunch of examples of him taking years to confirm things that were fairly obvious in the books. Almost all questions about the future of characters' plotlines are RAFO'd (which means "no comment"). Did Sanderson ever said: "Dalinar will have a role in the second half of SA and beyond?" No, he didn't. That's why I said he most likely won't. In your WoB he says that characters will die, and those, who survive will appear in the second half. Guess who will die, considering there's a time skip between the books. Maybe he just doesn't want to give spoilers. Maybe this is because Dalinar will die. I think he will die, because characters like Dalinar never lives. Never. I've now caught up on the various threads where you're bemoaning the (purely speculative) fate of Dalinar. I didn't realize that your reasoning was so specious: "Brandon hasn't confirmed Dalinar will survive to Book 6" -> "Dalinar must die before Book 6" By that logic everyone will die before Book 6, because Brandon has never confirmed that any character will survive.

  3. I honestly don't know what Dalinar's future is going to be, exactly. All I know is, given the story so far, Brandon's saying that Dalinar was his first character, one of his favorite characters, and the heart and soul of the series, it's going to be something unexpected and glorious.

  4. To be honest, there felt like a lot of very important scenes that didn't get done. I know Brandon said he couldn't land the first reunion of Jasnah and Navani, but that felt important to me. Jasnah and Kaladin meeting for the first time, or really, Jasnah interacting with any of her family more. But at least we did get her and Renarin at the end. The lack of reaction around Szeth feels the most egregious to me, and very serious in my opinion. I imagine there were a lot of cuts/things Brandon just couldn't fit in OB, so altogether it paints the picture of Brandon only doing the essentials.

  5. So about two days ago, I finished my OB reread. Oh, how I love that book. But to the theory... In Part 5, one of the "viewpoints" is the Knights Radiant as a whole. In the actual chapters the perspective changes every couple paragraphs pretty much, but anytime there is a chapter with a picture of the KR symbol at the beginning, it includes all of our known Knights, as well as... Navani and Yanagawn of Azir. My theory is that these two people will be become Knight Radiants, possibly in the near future. (I'm a little iffy on Yanagawn, because the passage was kinda showcasing Lift, but anyways...). In the other chapters, if there are any other viewpoints besides the KRs and these two, there is a different symbol in the beginning of the chapter. Maybe I missed one that would ruin the pattern, but I feel pretty confident. So, do you think Brandon was trying to hint that these two, especially Navani would become Radiant? Corrections welcome.

  6. For Hoid’s birthday, he’d want his flute back. He’d spend the day pestering Kaladin about it and sighing dramatically.

  7. Jasnah would ask for some secret knowledge. If not that, then the Heralds. And if not that, then something to help with the Desolation. Dalinar would agree with this while Navani would roll her eyes and request Shallan's help picking out decorations for a homemade cake (Jasnah would never eat it otherwise). Rock would want "Happy Birthday" sung in his native language. He would never ask, but Bridge 4 would do their best anyways. Adolin would want fashionable clothes. Kaladin would give him a Bridge 4 uniform (and demand it back by the end of the day...but wouldn't be too upset if it turned up "missing" or with a couple of "design suggestions"). Shallan would give him fashionable clothes. Jasnah would give him some book to read with Shallan. Dalinar would give him a new Ryshadium. And Renarin would help make a meal that Evi used to make. Dalinar...probably wouldn't really advertise it (I mean, neither would Jasnah, but when you're a queen...). Jasnah would give Dalinar a book about the Radiants. Adolin, Renarin, Kaladin, and (secretly) Sebarial would do their best to make sure Urithiru was running smoothly, so Dalinar could relax for a day with Navani. Hoid would come in and sing a special song.

  8. Lopen would ask Jasnah for a bronze wall to go with his palace.

  9. That's something I'd consider more important than the wedding. I actually was a bit confused about him just ... being there. I really hope we get to see some conflict later on.

  10. Yeah I think it just got cut for lack of space. It's unfortunate, but the book was already ridiculously long so stuff had to be cut.

  12. So, I've been thinking. The deeper we get into Cosmere the more important and larger than life Dalinar becomes. In Oathbringer we see him managing to gather enough power (presumably through his bond with the Stormfather and Connection to Honor's remnants) to force Honor's Perpendicularity. And he is only on his Third Ideal now...Can only imagine what is in store for him. A lot of people seem to think that Dalinar is going to reforge Honor's Shard (maybe under different name/Intend of Unity). Dalinar is also very important to Brandon. So my question is, do you think Dalinar could become something more relevant to the rest of the Cosmere? Via Ascension to Honor he can actually become very important for the larger Cosmere narrative, and we've already seen some characters (particularly in Mistborn) becoming very Cosmere-relevant past their orginal role. Do you think Dalinar might be headed in a similar direction?

  13. Its nice to finally be part of these forums, I've been reading the Cosmere books for a while now but keep forgetting to join you guys. Don't let my name fool you though HolyCadaver is a decade long god complex joke I enjoy using but has nothing to do with religion. Anyway its nice to finally join you all and I look forward to many long awkward conversations involving one armed herdazians and tongueless man child godlings.

  15. Until The Thing™ happened, I actually did like Moash (and was even hoping for a redemption arc). Then The Thing™ happened, and for all I care he can boil in cheese fondue for eternity. Except that would be a waste of cheese fondue, now that I think about it...

  16. I'd also imagine it's a jurisdiction thing -- so you can't blow up some place in South Dakota and go "But I detonated it in Utah!" and get off scott-free. Either way, though, if you're gonna use a nuke I doubt you're still at a point where legality matters to you. (As a native Utahn I am very glad nuking is illegal here. Just sayin'.)

  17. Hey guys, anyone got any ideas for an unnecessarily long and scientific sounding term for superhuman that could have a possible shortening? I'm just going to have them say super power, but I need the scientific term as a set up for a joke. Also, worldbuilding.

  19. I like to think he's like Dalinar only in that Dalinar tends to think everyone should be writing books all the time and won't stop telling people about his favorite books. He always assumes Nohadon is writing Way of Kings when he sees him and he never is. Dalinar takes time in the middle of a huge crisis to write Oathbringer, an idea Nohadon scoffs at when Dalinar suggested it to him in a vision. Dalinar made up his own head canon that Honor wrote a book. He tells Honor that the Visions are "a book you left behind, except I don't read it, I see it." - WoK Ch. 75 Dalinar carried Way of Kings into battle with him. Dalinar is always making Sadeas and Adolin listen to the Way of Kings audiobook. OB Ch. 28: "It's a quote from a book". Dalinar said. ... Yeah we know, Dalinar

  22. Just a reminder, Dalinar got excommunicated so he is no longer "Vorin", so currently there are no Vorin Bondsmiths. edit: oh also to add it seems the "main" followers of Vorinism is Jah Keved and Alethkar. Thayla pays token allegiance and still holds to the passions, and the Azir largely ignore the religion in favor of the Prime Aquaix (or however you spell it). So the only people to me that would really have an issue with it are the Alethi, which are now being led by an atheist Queen Jasnah.

  25. Alright, I dunno if we are still doing this. If we aren't, this will be my last posting on this. But I do hope all first time readers still read through the series! I am up to Chapter 30 so I;ll just do my analysis of those chapters as I am reading Lady of the Lake still and it is the last book in the Witcher series; I can't just stop that series now! The Witcher train is going full steam ahead! So as always, I have read this series before so possible spoilers, which you shall be warned about. Read them at your own risk! So, we open up The Great Hunt with a Prologue with a Darkfriend meeting! And we see Ba'alzamon! He's not physically there, but he is methodically breaking out prison and busting out! So a couple of notes about the meeting. I don't know for sure, but I think the meeting is at Shayol Ghul. Which how did they get there? Did a Fade transport them there? I don't think they traveled through the Ways. Maybe Portal Stones? Or has Forsaken brought them there through, spoilers! We don't know. Also the servants with the dead eyes with perfect physical perfection. Can some give me a spoilers! We see Aes Sedai which cements the existence of the Black Ajah! And we find out that the protagonist in the Prologue, Bors, is a Child of Light. Ooh the irony! So then we get back to Shienar and to Rand and Co. several months after the 1st book. I love Lan for many reasons, but one of them is the time he puts in to train Rand with the sword. We find out later before leaving Shienar, that Moiraine, the Amyrlin, and Verin know that Rand is the Dragon Reborn. So Rand is under not only the pressure of become mad with the use of Saidin, but that he is the one to save the world. Poor Rand is under a lot of stress and I believe that Lan's training with the sword probably really helps him. That and the friendship Lan and he develop. While we see that now Nynaeve and Egwene are even a little frightened of what Rand is now capable of; Lan never bats an eyelid. I dunno if that is because he is a Borderlander or because of his special training as he is the Uncrowned King of Malkier. Whatever it is, he is certainly made of stern stuff! So Rand meets the Amyrlin and she is a tough bird with lots of fish sayings. Makes sense. It seems that the White Tower, ideally would've wanted the Dragon in their custody to maybe do some damage control. It seems they think that the Dragon is a ticking time bomb and I really feel awful for any man that can channel in this Universe. So in the end, Rand, Matt, Perrin, and Loial all go with Ingtar and Co. to get the Horn of Valere from Fain. Wow he is like a Darkfriend on steriods and to get that dagger for Mat as Mat isn't doing too hot. So eventually Rand tells Mat and Perrin he can channel. And I really hate Mat's reaction. It would be one thing if they were strangers, but come on dude. You've known him your whole life and you just up and abandon him!? Like, to me, the whole point of being friends, is being there when they are at their lowest and highest and if anyone needed his friends to have his back it is Rand al'Thor. Perrin, unsurprisingly understands as he has his whole wolfy thing going on. But don't worry Mat matures later, not a huge amount, but eventually you start to think ok that's what I was waiting for! So the company to find the Horn gets split up. Then we find out Portal Stones are a thing and that the Age of Legends was an apropos name. The Aes Sedai of the time figured out what appears to be multiverses and how to get there. This is not to mention the Ways, which is basically just fast traveling. So that's sweet! Of course we find out sort of what Portal Stones are thanks to Loial and Selene. Ugh, Selene also known as, spoiler I don't know about you, but when I first read this and was introduced to her, I was thinking there is something fishy about her. Rand abort! She's cray cray! I dunno why, maybe it's her mysterious knowledge or her creepily clingyness to Rand and always whispering to him about power and glory. Like dude! Don't ever mess around with crazy! You may have a fun time for a while, but you always regret it later and sometimes it gets bloody. Also her mysterious penchant for disappearing! It's like she vanishes out of thin air! So they get to Cairhien and boy what a stark contrast between Cairhien proper and the Forgate. I find the Cairhienin to be a very severe and sombre people who always are appraising you and trying to one up you. We all may have met someone like that in our life, but the Cairhienin have made an art and game out of it call Daes Dae'mar. And porr Rand seems to be playing right into it! We also see Perrin taking the role of Hurin as the sniffer, albeit reluctantly. And we see Verin go to our Horn seeking company too. Verin, she is amazing and full of surprises. That's all I'll say on that! Ooh! and we meet the Seanchan! Now they are an interesting people and culture! From what we know of them so far; they seem to be very structured. And the way the furniture is described, I almost get a Japanese feel? Poor Domon and poor damane! I really hated that part about the Seanchan. They seem to think that they are animals, if they are being leashed and used as weapons. Of course we find more about them towards the end of the book and in the series. But that really grinds my gears. They seem to be intent on taking back the whole Continent. Yeeeaaahhh, good luck! You're gonna get just a little resistance. But it is looking like things soon are coming to a head on Toman Head real soon. Well that is it for now. If we are done with this discussion, that's fine. I'll probably still reread this series as i've already started. I can't stop now! I dunno if maybe when the show comes out we could all do a comparison of the books and show? Well hope everyone is having a good day/night! Blood and Bloody Ashes, it's Friday!

  26. I pretty sure Navani's next Ideal is going to be "I will Bring Order from the Chaos." In her POV scene during the council meeting in OB Ch 96, she kept repeating "Order from Chaos" to herself like a Mantra. Another often mentioned favorite candidate for a Bondsmith is Rlain.

  27. I think some combination of Shards, although that's what happened in Mistborn . Odium on it's own is a problem "god's own divine hatred separated from the virtues that gave it context" WoR Ch. 71 Vigil Odium + Honor = Justice would help address it. Attaching that Hatred to a code of behavior. I wrote a post that I can't find now pointing out how often justice is referenced in relation to Dalinar. When Kaladin is in the slave cart on his way to the shattered plains one slave says "perhaps we'll find justice here". Kaladin meets Dalinar out on the plains. -WoK Ch. 4 Dalinar confronts Sadeas after his betrayal in Ch. 69 Justice. They meet on a giant Thath glyph Navani burned which means justice. "Thath. Justice." After Dalinar beats up Elhokar he explains how things are going to be different with Dalinar in charge "We're going to turn Alethkar into a place that men will envy again ... because people here are safe and sound and because justice reigns" WoK Ch. 69 Justice. "Alethkar was justice." Dalinar in WoR Ch. 5 "If you really believe in justice, you---" Kaladin to Dalinar WoR Ch. 22 "All Kaladin had to do was lead the king into a specific spot ... that, and betray Dalinar's trust in him. And if I don't help kill the king won't I be betraying justice and honor?" - WoR Ch. 68 Betraying Dalinar is betraying Justice. "There was no Almighty watching. If there had been - and if he'd had a shred of justice to him -Honor would have long ago purged this world of the fraud that was Dalinar Kholin" - Dalinar thinks in OB Ch. 86 "Justice is that what you brought to those people?" Dalinar asks himself OB Ch. 86 Of course Kaladin, Szeth and Nale Herald of Justice talk a lot about justice as well. Dalinar seems to be associated with it the most.

  28. In fact, he's said that just because someone is a flashback character in the backhalf, doesn't mean they'd actually survive to that book, like Eshonai. No one is guaranteed a spot in the back half.

  29. What TwiLyght said. He "flipped sides" as you call it by betraying the man who gave him status among the Alethi and gave more of an ear to him and his plots than was honestly warranted, then subsequently (OB) Before the events of the end sections of Oathbringer, he was a misguided but somewhat lovable antihero and I honestly kind of liked him, but he's too far gone now and I would like nothing more than for Kaladin to put him down like he has earned.

  31. Yeah, there was a lot of falling action and setup for the next book that needed to happen at the end of Oathbringer. Things had to be omitted or the book would approach exceeding bindable length, they had to switch to thinner paper as it was. Oathbringer is longer than Words of Radiance, but look at the size of the hardcovers. Another omission is Szeth giving a more thorough explanation to Dalinar and the other Radiants before being accepted. The next we see of him he's just tagging along at strategy meetings and no one says anything.

  32. Yeah, Honor's death was actually fairly recent. It was post-Recreance. It's actually pretty strange that we don't know exactly when Honor died. That seems like a major event that would cause something of note on the planet. Plus, if Odium Splintered him, where are these new Splinters?

  35. I absolutely trust Brandon Sanderson to write a satisfying story. And I trust him to write Dalinar's story in the best way there is. I am sure Brandon Sanderson will not just kill of a character without telling his whole story - at least not one of the POV characters. I didn't like Eshonai's death and I disliked Venli taking over Timbre. But they grew on me during Oathbringer. I disliked other deaths in other Cosmere stories. But there is no character that was - imo - wasted by Brandon. Yes, I wish Amaram's story had a bit more depth. Yes, I so much wish Tien would still be alive. And I mourned Elhokar's death. But all those characters had reasons to die. We do not know where Dalinar's story is heading. And I think it's not a good idea to be disappointed by what we think Brandon will write without actual knowledge about characters' future. Even if those (corrupted?) Truthwatchers among you dare to foretell the future, be aware, you might err...

  36. I don't want to see a redemption arc for Moash either since I think he's a good antagonist. Though I can't help but think he would make an acceptable casualty for Kaladin's Fourth Ideal (if we go with the assumption he needs to admit and accept that he can't save everyone). No more love-triangles either, I was so happy the one we had got solved in Oathbringer. Sure there could and should be bumps in the relationships but let's not go back to something that has been solved. Also, I don't want to see a random female character becoming Kaladin's love interest. If he finds his love eventually I want it to be a character we know before they get together, like we did with Shallan and Adolin (Dalinar and Navani were a special case since they knew each other from the past and Dalinar was very against the idea of him courting her). I don't mean it has to be a character that has been introduced to us already in books 1-3, but I do want to learn to know the character at least few chapters before Kaladin falls head over heels for them... I also agree with the solo missions, I love the character interactions and would hate to see them going on their own ways or spend the whole book in the same little groups. I would also hate to not see Zahel/Vasher's reaction when Szeth brings Nightblood near him. The one year skip kinda makes me fear we'll miss that kind of small but important events. And I don't want Adolin to get killed yet. I have this irrational fear of Adolin getting killed off suddenly like some characters have in the past (outside Stormlight Archive).

  38. Hmm. I’d hoped to do analysis of a player that hadn’t gotten much attention, but this post is noteworthy enough that I want to share my thoughts on it before I go dark for about 24 hours. The first paragraph simply seems odd, as if Fura is attempting to project her “alignment” and draw people to a premature conclusion. It’s easy enough to claim villager, and in this case the passive and insinuating way in which she seems do to it, hedging against a future lynch on her, seems highly disingenuous. It could be posted by a villager, of course, but an Elim!Fura would probably benefit more from the ideas behind the post. If Furamirionind is an Eliminator, I expect the list she gives here to be a mixture of truths and lies. Hopefully by C3, if everyone honestly claims their C2 medallions, we’ll have a comprehensive picture of which metalminds are out there, and can potentially cross-reference Fura’s list at a later point. I will say that the tone throws me off, though, and something about the post just seems, as I’ve said before, highly disingenuous. (Apologies to Fura—it is harder to counter reasoning based on gut or feelings, and hopefully my suspicions will articulate themselves by tomorrow so you have something better to respond to.) Finally, an Iron claim makes me instantly suspicious, as I currently hold just the one Iron medallion, and that means that either the Eliminators want to give out Iron to ensure their target tonight kills somebody with a medallion, or Fura is lying, my Iron was randomly assigned and she’s evil. The odds of both of us only having a single Iron are incredibly low, and I’d very much like others’ input, as I know what I received, but obviously can’t prove it. From my point of view the Jedi Fura is almost certainly evil, but those without my personal bias may be best in resolving this situation to the thread. Finally, to be clear, I’m claiming because it’s urgent and I didn’t want the chance of me being killed tonight to hinder the evidence available to any investigation of Fura.

  39. When I started WoK I didn't really like the idea of flashbacks and ended up loving them. I didn't like the idea of interludes interrupting the story and now I look forward to them as much as any other POV. Dalinar bored me a little in the beggining and now he's my favorite character. At this point it doesn't matter what I would or wouldn't like to see in the next book, I know I'll love it anyway.

  40. I disagree but it's a stylistic choice. The entire Bridge 4 crew is like a minor character in their own right and they provide some of the most heartwarming scenes in OB. Plus, for narrative reasons the Bridge 4 sequences gives us a unique perspective, one of semi-normal folks as they try to cope with the end of the world. All of our POV characters are either nobles or converted nobles. Kaladin isn't normal anymore, Lyft is outside authority in Azish and has the King's ear, and Szeth strikes me as an exiled Shin noble too (or are they just letting anyone train with captive Honorblades in Shinovar nowadays). Even Adolin, a secondary character with outsized polarization, is nobility. Brandon felt it important to get in normal perspectives for worldbuilding purposes. Throwing in some Amaram chapters would have been nice and I would have liked to see them, but not at the expense of Bridge 4, especially if that character ain't gonna be around past the end of the book. And it probably lessens the impact of the heel-turn to give him a POV. Moash is probably gonna be around awhile so it makes sense to flesh him out. He also makes an effective foil for Kaladin, being the anti-Windrunner. Holistic therapy, Rosharan style. Strangely, they still need the crystals to gather energy.

  43. I honestly don't see where you get the impression of being "not welcome" here. Yeah, it sucks if your favourite character has less screen-time than another, I experienced that before. In SA I'm lucky because Kaladin is my favourite character EVER and yeah, I will never get enough of him, even if I had ten books on him alone. But Dalinar being a background character is a bit of an exaggeration. He is among the main five. Word count is not everything.
