  1. I don't know that I agree. Adolin used to be something of a playboy. Now, he's turned off even by the idea of Shallan illusioning herself as other women Adolin used to prefer a lot of shallow relationships, but is developing closer friendships with Kaladin, Skar, and Drehy. Adolin used to be a socialite and something of a dandy. Now, extreme fashion "doesn't fit" anymore and he's mostly rejected the others of his class. Adolin learned to accept and understand what his father meant by living the Codes, and backed him up when Sadeas betrayed them at the Tower Adolin once would have allowed himself to be bullied into the kingship. But with encouragement from Vivenna and Shallan, he's now looking for his own place in the world instead of the one Dalinar is projecting onto him. I think the only time in all of OB Adolin even thinks about dueling is to note that Shardblades aren't particularly good dueling weapons, but that instead they seem pretty specifically designed to kill thunderclasts. Dueling used to be something of an obsession of his. Most of all, I think Adolin used to be highly typical of Alethi society at the beginning of WoR. He certainly is not that anymore. Adolin is going to have to learn to find a place for himself moving forward.

  2. Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to the Tournament of Champions! All of the participants have already put for their amazing roasting skills, so we are bound to see some burns. Also, thanks to the amazing twists, these rounds are sure to be entertaining... as long as you're not participating. There are some changes I want to go over for this tournament. For one, instead of the usual 48 hours, everyone will have 96 hours to put in their roasts. If everyone gets theirs in before then, I will start the voting early. With the addition of twists, the general format will not be the same. Instead of going from 16 people to 4 to 2, the tournament will narrow down from 16 to 12 to 4 to 2. Paired with the time increase, this will make for a much longer tournament, but I'm hoping everyone will enjoy what's in store. For these primary rounds, we will be roasting in 2 v 2 battles. You and one other person will be on a team, roasting two other people. Everyone will submit one unique rap, but you may work with your teammate on creating the best rap possible and use references to their characters (eg. – Breeze is on a team with Vasher, trying to roast Gavilar: "Look, my buddy Vasher here, he's a Breath master / But all you've ever done is create a disaster"). Then, everyone will vote on which team wins. Of the losing team, the two participants will give their character's "rapper name", or the Returned version of their character (eg. – Lift is "Your Pancakefulness"). Then, everyone will vote on their favorite Returned name, and that person will stay in the tournament. Additionally, every round of the primaries will have a creative theme, and a special twist. Each cycle of the primaries will last for a week. Here's how the timing will play out... 96 hours: Participants write and post their raps 24 hours: people vote on the winner 24 hours: losing team posts their Returned names 24 hours: people vote on Returned names Please let me know if you have any questions! Feel free to post on the thread, write a message on my feed, or PM me. Now, on to the first round! Team 1: @hoiditthroughthegrapevine, with Taravangian! @Zath, with Sja-anat! Team 2: @Sorana, with The Girl Who Looked Up! @Silva, with Yokska! Your theme: Oscar Acceptance Speech Your special twist: You must use three quotes from or about your character. You have 96 hours. Good luck!

  3. Is this prediction thread or wish list thread? Ok here is what I am looking for: - Dalinar cuz he is the best character and my personal favorite. More specifically: - His confrontation with Ishar. Oathbringer implied it will happen. I'd like to see "Bondsmith" vs Bondsmith. It will probably has something to do with Dalinar's fourth oath. - Clarifications of what happen with Dalinar at the end of Oathbringer. Not sure if we will get much (sounds like book 5 material), but maybe some? - Learning more about Listerens and their culture. I assume Eshonai flashbacks together with Venli present day narrative will contain tons of interesting things. - More Radiants. Book 4 is supposed to be Willshaper book. - Who is Sibling? - Szeth helps to train Radiants. His experience with all ten surges will be useful. - Dalinar/Lift interactions. They have a good chemistry. Maybe he can adopt her? - More Bondsmith powers. We didn't see that much in Oathbringer. And what we did see...it is unclear is it a Bondsmith power or Dalinar-only thing. - More Heralds please. Ishar, Taln, Ash. - Any chances to see Cultivation again? - Characters traveling. I want to see new locations. Roshar is so big and mostly unexplored (for readers) - Nothing from Shallan and Adolin...my least favorite characters (also Renarin), if they just disappear I won't miss them.

  5. The priest stood at the altar. "We gather here to unite these two people in marriage. Their decision to marry has not been entered into lightly and today they publicly declare their private devotion to each other. The essence of this commitment is the acceptance of each other in entirety, as lover, companion, and friend. A good and balanced relationship is one in which neither person is overpowered nor absorbed by the other, one in which neither person is possessive of the other, one in which both give their love freely and without jealousy. Marriage, ideally, is a sharing of responsibilities, hopes, and dreams. It takes a special effort to grow together, survive hard times, and be loving and unselfish. Priest didn't stop to pause. Rather he rambled on in an unexpected lively tone.Do you both pledge to share your lives openly with one another, and to speak the truth in love? Do you promise to honor and tenderly care for one another, cherish and encourage each other, stand together, through sorrows and joys, hardships and triumphs for all the days of your lives?"

  6. When he's training Shallan, he wonders what kind of fighting style to teach her. He considers dueling, but not any more than any other style of fighting. His love of fighting with his Shardblade is not the same to me as his love of dueling specifically. I don't think the Adolin in Kholinar with the strike team would have said something like this. I don't think he's really this person anymore. He doesn't see honor in this way anymore. And frankly, I think that after the duel with Jakamov et al that he hasn't really been as keen on the institution of dueling on the whole. All of these are signs of development to me

  7. Kaladin: Kaladin will spend either the intervening year between books 3 and 4 (if this happens, I hope Brandon changes his mind on this after his re-read) or the first chunk of book 4 taking the Windrunners and evacuating Alethkar. He expressed desire to evacuate Hearthstone and specifically to bring his family to Urithiru before going to attempt to liberate Kholinar, and I think he will be allowed to do so now. But, Kaladin being Kaladin, he won't be able to allow himself to just take the people of Hearthstone, he'll have to save everyone. This, obviously, will be harder than he expects. Meanwhile, Jasnah and probably Dalinar will arrange his marriage to some budding KR or foreign royalty while he's gone for political reasons. This will enrage Kaladin and will be grounds for his conflict for the rest of the book. His fourth oath, strangely, will have to do with him pledging to actually lead people in more ways than just Bridge Four on the battlefield. I've seen a lot of people suggest that he takes some sort of personal responsibility for Gavinor, but I don't see that happening. If he's going to pick a child to protect, it will be his new baby brother. Tien meant more to Kaladin than Gavilar/Gavinor ever will, and even now he sees that as his greatest failure. Shallan: Shallan will start taking her wardship seriously just as Jasnah actually becomes too busy to teach her. Between Jasnah's queenship and being a KR I doubt she'll have time to teach Shallan much of scholarship in the traditional sense. Shallan, much as in OB, will have to continue to find ways to be helpful for herself. I honestly don't know what this will look like. Obviously there's the whole thing with the Ghostbloods and Sja-Anat, but I have no idea what looking for Sja-Anat even really entails other than trying to track down instances of corrupted spren. Adolin: Adolin's bond with Maya will continue to strengthen. I think he'll be swearing Edgedancer oaths by the end of book 4. Adolin will also struggle to be highprince, as it will probably honestly bore him and he'll need some sort of shock to actually engage with his duties beyond just sort of reacting and doing what Jasnah/Dalinar need him to do. Not out of laziness necessarily, but out of a dislike of the job. Renarin: I think we'll finally see more of what's going on in Renarin's head now that the big reveal is out of the way. I still think there are unplumbed depths there, but broadly once Brandon allows someone to be a POV character there isn't much left to spoil or they're about to die or something like that -- interludes aside -- so here's hoping to much more out of Renarin than there has been previously. Venli: Venli is on Team Dalinar by the end of the book. I don't see how she can be telling the Parshmen the truth about the Listeners without getting sniffed out by Odium/the Fused, who already question her loyalty. I doubt that she straight up dies, and she's seen Dalinar standing up to Odium and not just getting totally squashed. Obviously she won't be immediately welcomed and trusted by Team Dalinar, so her and Timbre learning to trust them and them learning to trust her will be a big deal. And, as soon as Bridge Four sees a KR Listener, they'll rally around Rlain, who will become a Windrunner. I do not see him becoming a Bondsmith as I've seen suggested elsewhere. I think the presumption of impossibility is the only thing really keeping Rlain's feet on the ground (as it was for Lyn). Szeth: The biggest conflict I see on Szeth's horizon is that Dalinar is going to want to make contact and start forging alliances with the Shin leadership. Szeth will have obvious insights into Shin leadership, but it is unclear how useful those insights will be, given Szeth's hatred for the Shin leadership. He will encourage scouring them off the face of Roshar, which Dalinar will obviously want to resist. Meanwhile, he will have to overcome the fact that he's the Assassin in White and that all sorts of world leaders and even the Alethi will treat him badly and it will almost certainly cause problems for Dalinar internationally. I don't think even Jasnah is super keen on the idea of having Szeth apparently serve as Dalinar's full-time bodyguard now that the bridgemen have pretty much all become Windrunner squires at this point, and those who have not soon will. Szeth is still a big bag of problems that didn't get addressed in OB, both due to a lack of time in the book and a lack of time in-story (I hope that makes sense). Szeth also has a black sphere hidden somewhere in Jah Keved Dalinar might want to see, so we might actually get some answers Lift: Who knows what Lift is ever going to do? I imagine that Dalinar will try and leverage Lift's friendship with Gawx to rope in the skittish Azish, who seem to have put great stock into the reports of the Sadeas army turning on Theylanah and have no real basis of understanding of the Thrill or even really the Unmade in general. I'm sure Lift will continue to buck expectations, but also that as the Urithiru contingent becomes aware that she uses calories for Investiture will want to study her. Lift is going to spend a lot of time learning how to skate like the Fused. I don't think we've ever seen her draw in Stormlight traditionally, so maybe she'll learn how to do that or she'll learn that she can't, depending on how whatever the Nightwatcher did to her works. On the Cosmere scale, I think Lift is my candidate for Most Likely to Worldhop, as of all the KRs she's the only one not bound to Rosharan Stormlight. Dalinar: I think Dalinar will have two major issues. The first is the recurring issue of international politics and building his kill-Odium coalition. This will involve both learning who he can trust. Primary among these will be the Venli and whatever Parshmen she brings with her and then also Szeth. The second issue is running the city of Urithiru, especially if as I believe Kaladin will be bringing in more and more refugees from across Alethkar. I feel pretty confident that this will involve reawakening The Sibiling and finding a second Bondsmith. Gavilar: I don't know how much longer we can go without learning more about Gavilar's motives. Right now, they mostly seem to be "start a Desolation in order to bring back the Heralds so they can strengthen the Vorin Church". If this is really all there is to it, then he seems a lot less noble to me and a lot more foolish than many of our main characters seem to think. I think both Jasnah and Dalinar would feel immensely betrayed by this if they were aware of it. Jasnah: I think most of our Jasnah POVs will have to do with her having captured(?) Taln and Ash. As per usual she knows way more about them than we do, so hopefully this is how we can learn more about what's going on with them and with the Heralds generally, all of whom seem to be "getting worse". If they're all mad (understandable) but also uniformly getting worse, there's a reason for that and I think Detective Jasnah is the one to crack that mystery. Rock: I think same as Kaladin after agreeing to assassinate Elhokar, in order for Rock to keep moving forward as a KR he's going to have to swear a higher Ideal. Unlike Kaladin, I can actually see Rock walking away from being a KR entirely because his other more personal oaths mean more to him than being a KR. I don't know that that will happen, but I think it could. Interactions I'm hoping for/looking forward to: Lirin and Dalinar. These two are both sort of father figures to Kaladin and if Lirin makes it to Urithiru I can't imagine that Dalinar will just ignore Kaladin's parents. I don't think Lirin will think much of Dalinar. Venli and Rlain. Venli has a lot to answer for and I think Rlain either knows it or will piece it together Renarin and Glys. We know next to nothing about Glys. LET ME LOVE HIM Shallan and Ash. Seeing Shallan meet her namesake, especially in Ash's broken state, would be amazing. It even makes sense if Jasnah brings Shallan to interrogate Ash and Taln. Shallan will want guidance but will get crazy instead. Adolin and Lift. Especially as Adolin moves more and more towards Edgedancing (as I think is inevitable given what we learned in OB) he and Lift will be increasingly in contact with one another. I can't imagine two people on Roshar less alike Syl and the other Honorspren. Syl is such a savage with them and I love it and I want to see more Lift and Lopen. Who can out-weird the other? That might actually be too much to handle Adolin and his Bridge Four Bros. Adolin needs bros and the others of his class either betrayed him or left him hanging in WoR, and by this point I think he sees Bridge Four as his peers more than other Alethi lighteyes, especially Skar, Drehy, and Kaladin. We've seen some of it already, but I'm always in for more Whew this ended up going a lot longer than I thought it would.

  8. Adolin was intended as a foil for Dalinar. However, because that required a lot of screen-time for him, Brandon made sure to develop him more as a character. Having someone take up as much page-time as Adolin, only to be a foil, would be a complete waste. Adolin is a fully fleshed out character, and has advanced beyond being a foil for Dalinar, just like (Mistborn spoiler): And like Moash advanced beyond angry bridgeman to slayer of Heralds. Saying that Adolin is a foil being dragged along is to reduce his role and character a lot.

  9. Greetings everyone, and welcome to Armedius Academy's 35th annual Melee! I'm your host, Tom Middleton. And I'm your co-commentator, Ron Howard. You can smell the scent of chalk dust in the air, eh, Ron? Absolutely, Tom. Armedius's finest Rithmatists will be taking the field shortly. This should be a fight for the ages. Indeed. Each and every one of these students has a shot at the gold. However, there can only be one winner. Ron, would you mind going over the rules for anyone just joining us? Of course Tom. The Rules: This is a free-for-all game, which means there are no teams this game. Your goal is to be the last player standing. In the event of a tie, the player with the most kills wins. This game takes place in two phases: the Preparation phase, and then up to 9 Rounds in the Game phase. Preparation Phase: In the preparation phase, students decide on what strategy to use, and form temporary alliances. This phase will last 48 hours, and begins once the game starts. In this phase, PMs are open. Feel free to contact anyone you like to talk strategy. Please include both myself and the impartial moderator when making these PMs. In addition, you must choose a defense to use in the main event. These will be explained later. Rounds: After the Preparation Phase, Round 1 will start. Each Round lasts 24 hours, and PMs are closed during them. Each round, you can submit one of these three actions: Line of Forbiddance: Defend a player, usually yourself, from one attack Line of Vigor: Attack another player Line of Making: Swarm a player with chalklings. During the next round, they will be unable to take any actions. Defense: During the Preparation Phase, you may choose one of the following Ballintain Defense: You cannot draw Lines of Forbiddance, but your LInes of Vigor deal double damage Matson Defense: Choose a player when you draw this defense. You learn what Defense that player is using. Taylor Defense: You cannot take any actions during Round 1. If you survive the first round, you gain an extra life. Miscellaneous: @Alvron will be our impartial moderator. The game will be starting Tuesday, January 8th at 4 PM Eastern Standard Time. Well put Ron. Let's sit back and watch as the contestants enter the stadium. Player List: Quick Links:

  10. With the new year just beginning, I thought it would be fun for those of us with New Years Resolutions to have a thread where we can share and encourage one another. My resolution is to drink more water. My body really doesn't handle dehydration well, but I've never really made an effort to stay hydrated. Day 1 and I've been drinking more water than usual.

  11. This looks to be amazing. I can’t wait for the bloodshed to begin. Also excited to finally join a QF, though I’ll likely only post twice a day. I’ll be Miffed, who is shocked and disgusted at everything that doesn’t go his way. Most notably that the countdown site is up just after he finished GMing.

  12. Well, he was located in The Dalles, which is where Remington was from. So either there was a mentor-student relationship, or The Dalles was the epicenter of a lot of badchull energy.

  13. I didn't really stop to think about it until I read that, but I agree on all points. Whether or not a character is well written/enjoyable/liked is completely beside the point of a character being well developed. Adolin doesn't develop, he's the same. We don't see growth. And from some WoBs I've read he was intended to be a sideline character that got a leading roll somewhat unexpectedly. He also seems to be (and IMO was made to be) the most well adjusted main character. Sort of a foil for the foibles of the others. (Probably a reason he's so well liked?) Unfortunately, it doesn't leave a lot of room for development. Sadeas was a launching point but instead of taking off he just sort of... jumped up a bit then fell back down to where he already was. *** Heh. The best part of reading that is thinking how much Nightblood is just going to soak it all in. I'm picturing wide-eyed wonder at pretty much everything Lift says. Nightblood, "No! Really? Those do that!?"

  14. *has giant urge to tell contestants to write a speech about accepting Oscar Pine* *realizes that only one person out of the four would even get the joke, because Silva's probably not there yet* *hides in corner, waiting with trepidation for her turn* To clarify, each person in the team is submitting a roast, right? Not one per team?

  15. Lift x Nightblood :^) I have this scene in my head (not from the books) where Jasnah is reading from the Urithiru Gem Archive about how "Edgedancers were the most graceful and refined of all the orders..." and slowly trails off as she sees Lift and Nightblood in the corner and Lift going, "okay sword, so the thing you hafta understand about butts is..." and then Jasnah just walks out lol.

  18. Just Lightwards? He wasn't going to line up Lightwards, Corpsemaker and Altermind and trigger all their weaknesses at the same time and then shoot a single shot through all 3 of them? Not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed.

  19. So we'd planned for Remington to kill Lightwards by triggering his weakness. Most likely as Oregon crumbled. Which would be quite the musical.

  20. If the different RP cities were high school cliques, The Dalles would have been the cool daredevils; Portland would have been the kids who dared each other to gargle ketchup or marry a slice of pizza; and Edmonton would be the pranksters who are sometimes entertaining and sometimes go too far with their pranks. Want to hear what we'd planned for Remington, by the way?

  21. I think the Dallas just sort of accumulated coolness, in the same way Portland accumulated weirdness. And in the same way Edmonton is accumulating shenanigans.

  23. Or at least, that’s what he wants you to think. ...I just realized Remington Springfield is the Chuck Norris of the Oregonverse. Actually no, he’s better, because is Chuck Norris named after two rifles? No. No he is not.

  24. Nah. He probably died while jumping out of a burning building shirtless, shooting at a helicopter with a rifle in midair, when his rifle jammed and blew up in his face.

I play the mmo Final Fantasy XIV a lot in my spare time (my character is named Wax Ladrian lol) and I have a cat named Aviendha, because I am also a massive Wheel of Time nerd. I thought I'd say hello and introduce myself to this awesome community!

  26. Hi guys, I've been a long time fan of the series but only recently ran into this site. I decided that instead of a specific question, I want to hear what you would like to see happen when different forms of Investiture collide. We've seen for example that Returned can use Stormlight to survive without taking breaths, but how else would you like to see things interact. I'm not asking "If it could happen", let's just assume that it can. Personally, I want to see how a Kandra would utilise the Nahel Bond with their Radiant Armour. The armour is confirmed to "fit the wearers' shape", but Kandra are shapeshifters. Could the armour fit on a four-armed Knight Radiant who could utilise the strength the armour grants to use a 4 handed longsword? What would you like to see happen? If there's a better place to ask this question, rather than a Q&A page, please let me know.

  27. @Eris I think that they do, but with a caveat - are we referring to how the spren look in Shadesmar, the physical realm, or both, and are we also talking about the lesser spren - like windspren - which resemble surgebinding spren - like Honourspren - or the surgebinding spren, or both? In all cases I think there is a general similarity between spren which share a surge - the Truthwatcher spren and Cultivationspren resemble plants, which ties to the surge of Progression, but Cultivation spren lean towards plant-like crystal growth - Abrahsion, so smooth crystals - while Truthwatcher spren look like growing light, which leans towards the surge of Illumination, which they share with Cryptics, which have a shape that could resemble a ripple, being fractal - and, of course, Cryptics are next to Inkspren, associated with the idea of logic, so a mathematical base for their shape would also be implied. This also ties to the essence they are associated with, as Cultivationspren are crystal, Truthwatcher spren are plant, and Cryptics are blood, or rather, non-oil fluids, and they flow over surfaces when travelling, and their shape could be considered a ripple. And, of course, windspren and Honourspren appear like ribbons of wind, or rather, can appear as ribbons of wind. In general, I think that the physical manifestation the surgebinging spren (and the lesser spren relate to them) take resembles their essence, along with a relation to their surge, and so yes, spren of neighbouring types look similar, though leaning in different ways, kind of like how plants and crystals are similar in that they grow (Progression), and metals and stone are similar in how they are firm (Cohesion), and oils and non-oils are similar in that they flow (Transformation) :-) I posed a topic a while back covering some of this, see here, though be aware it is a long post, and the area of interest is in the spoilered section, mainly covered in the bolded sections below each of the surges and their descriptions.

  28. I like the way he represented a way she could go, for which she needed to face herself and to grow. Honestly, I'm not reading Brandon's books for a romance. I like to ship characters, but in the end I'm not looking for a romance in them. Brandon himself admits, that he has a hard time writing a good romance, and as much as I enjoy his books, it's not because of the romantic scenes.

  29. The ”who does Amaram belong to debate” is interesting. It could be Kaladin, but it would require a ton of intel for Mraize to know about that. Jasnah is possible, but unlikely as Mraize thought her dead at that point. My personal guess is Iyatil, since she actually attempts to kill Amaram at the end of WoR, and originally was supposed to succeed (Brandon changed his mind and killed Amaram in OB instead).

  30. This is less then a list of predictions than it is a wishlist: - Dalinar's book is released and the reaction's are ... mixed. Adolin and Renarin give themselves up for adoption. - Szeth and Vasher meet. - Kaladin brings his family to Urithiru and plays a part in Gavinor's upbringing. - Venli had doubts about her place in the Desolation - Lift and Kaladin spend time together. It will be hilarious. - Moash is a pile of crem - Kaladin will struggle greatly with the purpose of fighting, eventually refusing to fight listeners and just going after the Fused themselves. - We'll get to see the Horneater Peaks and learn more about Rock - Lopen looks for someone to hate to say his Third Ideal - Adolin will try to revive Maya and eventually succeed - but maybe not in book 4 - Kaladin will disagree a lot with Jasnah. She likes it. - I'm in for Rlain as bondsmith Hmm. Might add more later. I'm sick and my brain isn't working right.

  32. Another Aon winked out, the broken chain extending the full length of Voidus' body as he stood before it. This was only one of the many layers of the barrier but it was progress, and the further he got, the easier it would become. Eventually easy enough that he wouldn't need to exert himself too much to break the rest by force. He continued grabbing one Aon after the next, the glow seemed to pulse for a moment, weaker and weaker. Beating in time with the rythmic thuds of the Guardian continuing its circuit. Thud. Thud. Thud. Only a few more hours.

  35. Shallan/Kaladin/Adolin: I want all of them to be dating each other. I really love Shalladin and I'm disappointed they didn't get together in OB, while Kaladin and Adolin's mutual antagonism blossoming into friendship in WoR makes for extremely fertile. shipping ground as far as I'm concerned. Shadolin is, for me, the least interesting side of this triangle, but they still had good development in OB and I think they're cute together. Shallan/Jasnah: My brain is hardwired to seek out F/F ships, and at the moment this one seems the most realistic. Human/spren ships: These are kind of silly, but I also ship Syl/Shallan and Dalinar/Stormfather. Lots of people in this thread have mentioned Syl/Kaladin, but I don't really see it? I think it's because what makes them a good radiant/spren pair--Syl basically spending 100% of her energy on keeping Kaladin happy--doesn't strike me as the foundation of a healthy romantic relationship. (To each their own, of course.) Also... ^ This. I like this.

  37. My Predictions: I wanna go a bit more into detail. I'll be predicting more than just the storyline. The prologue takes place on the night of Gavilar's death, probably through Elhokar's POV. I mean, a single viewpoint chapter from him would be nice, seeing as we never got one before and are obviously never getting that chance again. Also, I wanna know what he was talking to Nale and that other guy about. It had to be important, right? Right. The name of the prologue will be "To [insert verb]", following along with that common SA trope. I read somewhere else a suggestion that it might be "To Answer." Other obvious things I don't need to mention but will anyway: The names of the five parts together undoubtedly form a ketek, the epilogue will be from Wit's POV as he has a philosophical monologue right before one more important thing happens in the Brandon Avalanche, some of our Radiants will advance in their oaths in part four or part five during the Avalanche (I also hope for Shardplate growth), and we'll probably get to know a lot more about the singers in this book, as it's sort of their book. Because of that, I think this book will also give us a clearer understanding of the ten levels of Voidbinding and nine levels of the Fused, which even Oathbringer has only lightly touched on (kind of like how Elantris barely touched on the Dakhor magic, or how the first two Mistborn books were elusive about Hemalurgy, making us wonder how this mysterious evil magic system really works). Other story predictions: Dalinar will finish writing Oathbringer and publish it, Shallan will come to some sort of confrontation with Sja-anat and maybe even a rematch with Re-Shephir, Adolin and Renarin will find out the truth about their mother's death, more on the Ghostbloods like an actual appearance from the enigmatic Thaidakar, more on the Tukar/Emul war like an appearance from Ishar/Tezim, and Vyre killing another Herald and maybe Roshone too. I actually think it might be Ishar who Vyre kills. I also think/hope Dalinar will finally have dealt with the remaining highprinces not loyal to him ('bout time that finally happened, since he's only been trying to unite the highprinces for three books already). Also, we've seen a pattern in the chapter heading images. For each flashback chapter in the Stormlight books, it has shown the symbol of the main character of the book in reverse color order. For Kaladin in TWoK, there's the spear that has a black banner on it in his normal chapters, and a white one in the flashbacks. For Shallan in WoR, it's a white Pattern on a black background with a black Pattern on a white background for her flashbacks. For Dalinar in OB, we see the crest of the Kholin princedom in white with black symbols but black with white symbols in his flashback scenes. I believe that this will not be the case in the fourth book, because the flashbacks will be for Eshonai, who isn't alive now, so why would we need reverse-color chapters? No, I think the flashbacks will just be the normal Eshonai chapter headings (a Parshendi woman silhouette in Shardplate) while modern chapters with Venli will have hers in contrast (a Parshendi woman silhouette looking down at a spren in her hand). I've noticed the books lengths are getting exponentially longer. WoR is about 80 pages longer than TWoK, and OB is about 160 pages longer than WoR, so a loose assumption could be that SA4 will be 240 pages longer than Oathbringer, clocking in at about 1,500 pages, which is longer than Sanderson's all-time favorite novel, Les Miserables (about 1,400 pages). I've actually wonder if it's one of Brandon's life goals to write a book longer than his favorite book. It seems to be going that direction. Last but not least: the name. I think the book title will be in relation to a written work of the listeners or the singers, maybe "Song of Secrets" (likely, but maybe a copout) or "Eila Stele" (maybe too unconventional for a book name).

  39. We don't know if that's just Glys or if it's a characteristic of that form of spren. Likely that it's just Glys that's like that, since he probably knows what will happen if Renarin dies and was a bit offput that he was just gonna let it happen. Also possible is that he's like that for the same reason that he bonded Renarin: they're a lot alike. Nervous in many areas, inexperienced in what they want to be, and treated as outsiders for something they can't change. Glys just doesn't want to die, and I wouldn't count that as an example of his mannerisms the majority of the time.

  40. For now, yes, Glys looks to have just been altered in color, but we don't know the depth. We haven't talking to Glys at all, seen his interactions with Renarin, and definitely haven't seen a Radiant/Truthwatcher-spren conversation other than Ym talking to his spren with no response. The corruption might run deeper but we won't know until we get more. That being said, it probably won't be all bad, honestly. The way Sja-anat refers to it as "Enlightening" makes me think all they're doing is coopting the spren's native Investiture and making is Odium's. That might even be the extent of it.

  41. @Calderis I wouldn't be surprised if you are right, but I think that it is more likely that surgebinding is mainly Honour, and the surges accessed then depending on how much like Honour or how much like Cultivation a spren is, and so the substrate that is the bond makes Truthwatcher spren have more Honour in them than might otherwise be implied. I think it is important to formalise this particular part of what you have said - that there is a difference between the surges, and surgebinding. Are the surges an actual property of the Cosmere - that is, a physical reality, a law that applies to the physical, cognitive, and spiritual - or a perception of physical reality, something which is grounded in the Cosmere through Roshar, and applies to other worlds only in the context of a cognitive construct accessed offworld via the spiritual, a way of accessing physical laws to achieve particular results. As Brandon implies here, it is the former, but I suspect it is more of a mixture of the two, as the cognitive can impact the spiritual and physical in the Cosmere, and so is the former because of the latter. Either way, there is something very important in that quote. The pertinent extract bolded, and key points within that underlined: Gravity, as a fundamental law, is a surge, or became a surge - that is, something which can be accessed magically as a fundamental force - because it is perceived to be one. Surgebinding allows access to the surges, and the Fused have access to the surges, but surgebinding is of both Honour and Cultivation. The surge of gravitation isn't Honour, but Windrunners accessing the surge of gravitation do so through Surgebinding, which is of Honour. And of Cultivation. Now, lets focus on this part - if you described Surgebinding, but not the Surges, how would you describe it, and based just on that description, which shard do you think it applies to, or which shards does it connect to, and which more strongly? I think a complete and accurate summary of Surgebinding is: forming a bond to a spren (initiated by the spren), making progressive oaths, keeping those oaths, and; through making and keeping those oaths cultivating the bond. Of those four points, all four tie to Honour, and the second and fourth tie to both Honour and Cultivation. Honour made the Honourblades, which access the surges, but do they count as surgebinding? Just because they access paired surges, which I think there is a quote how the pairing is natural, doesn't make them surgebinding, any more or less than the Fused accessing individual surges makes the Fused surgebinding. I think that Surgebinding - and not just Surgebinding, but also the bond - is a substrate the knights and their spren have access to, and the type of spren, based on their composition and personal belief, alter that substrate, but that substrate is still naturally primarily Honour. Maybe Truthwatcher spren are naturally entirely Cultivation, but once they start to form a bond they combine with parts of Honour spiritually, forming the bond and cultivating it like any other surgebinding spren. Now, I have a theory about how the Fused access to the surges - in short, it is a single type of Voidbinding, each fused only able to use it in a limited way, the same type - though in this case, expanded, that Amaram had when bonding to Yelig-nar, just as I think that the Midnight Essences - or rather, forming them - is another type of voidbinding, and so forth. And I agree that there is a difference between surges and surgebinding, and, simply mentioning Ashyn, I think we will be seeing more unique access to surges from other stories. But I believe surgebinding to be mainly Honour, while still being of Cultivation as well, but to a lesser extent. [Edit] Also, this link about how the original knights radiant were more Honour,

  42. I know right! At first, I was kind of bored with them, mostly because I wanted to read about Kaladin and co., but now, with all the new information from the books, as well as forum discussions and whatnot, I'm getting hyped! Too bad it will be so long before book 4. We're in this together.

  43. Now the real question was if the two planets were 10- or 9-centric before the shards of Honor, Cultivation and Odium got there... Edit: Do we have a WoB on it?

  44. @Dalakaar I think people have talked about that, or something similar, but I don't know about it... We know that although they did break their oaths, the Herald's didn't die as punishment or anything. They lived, as we know. Therefore we know that they didn't become the Unmade. So the Unmade coming from the breaking of the oath would mean they came from it as some sort of byproduct of the break, and I don't see how that would work exactly...we've never seen any other side effects of broken oaths in Roshar, or even a mention or foreshadowing of something similar. @Toaster Retribution Aimia is definitely hiding something huge and BAM is certainly that. I'm on board with this theory

  45. New head canon. Era 4 ends with hoid, having connected with every shard, force feeding himself (dumbledore-syle) a splinter worth of all 16 godmetals, then duralumin burning all 16 concurrently, connecting him sufficiently to kick out all 16 vessels so he can become the new Adonalsium...but he dies in the process at which point Wayne walks in, sees the reunited shards, thinks "eh why not" and becomes God/Waynalsium. It's a very specific head canon.

  46. I could see Steel Inquisitors, as they're doing the "messy" part of Hemelurgy, singing a hard-rock version of "You'll Be In My Heart" "A Whole New World" for Siri and someone (IDK who) when she first comes to Hallandren. When Kelsier first meets vin, "Friend Like Me" I could also see Lightsong singing a parody version of Aristocats' song "Everyone Wants to be A Cat" titled "Everyone wants to be a God" I just want to see Bluefingers sing "Be Our Guest" for no reason at all.
