  1. So today I was at work and was thinking about allomancy and FTL technology when I realized that speed bubbles compress space. I can't believe no one has mentioned this before, so I'll act as if this has been proposed before and try and add as much detail as possible. Since I had many hours to work this out, here's what I have: I am basing this on the idea that the cosmere still has einsteinian physics, because I don't think Brandon is just throwing out all that stuff. He's relying on that. And here, there was an idea for a FTL drive called the alcubierre drive. The basic idea is that while no THING can move faster than light, space-time can. So, like surfing a wave, you compress space in front of you, and expand space behind you, and end up going faster than light. So, what I realized is that a speed bubble can't be dilating time without dilating space to some degree or another. Obviously it's not a huge amount, because it's not affecting the people inside enough for anyone to go "huh, this is weird." But, if you're compressing time, you should also to some degree be compressing space as well, based on the whole idea of space-time. And that means with 2 bubbles, you could potentially achieve FTL travel. This idea has several things going for it, but obviously there's a bit more to this process than just a slider and a pulser in a rocket ship. First, this is a relatively viable method of FTL travel, given that unlike many other methods in stories, it doesn't break hard physics. The main issue in the real world is that we don't have a great way to compress space and expand space in the way that an alcubierre drive would require. But huh, look at that! Coincidentally, Bendalloy and Cadmium EXACTLY fit the bill for what you would need! It's almost as if Brandon read about the alcubierre drive at some point, and decided to create speed bubbles to fit the bill, so that they could be around as a power but then later on be realized for their greater potential! Even recently, he's mentioned that there's more to speed bubbles in relation to FTL travel that we haven't figured out yet, and we've gone on and on about the ability for cadmium to enable a "cryosleep" of sorts. This would exactly fit the bill for something reasonable for them to discover in the future once they have a better understanding of realmatics and physics. Speaking of which, real quick, I'll list off what Scadrial needs to get to to have this be a viable technology. First, they need to get an understanding of Einsteinian physics, specifically space-time. Furthermore, they need to understand that speed bubbles are locked on in location to things like the planet, or a moving train. This would allow them to extrapolate that a bubble would stay in place on a spaceship as well. Finally, they need to have completely mechanized the metallic arts in order to get the ship off the ground so that this drive will even work, because it won't work on a planet. Furthermore, I expect them to have figured out how to create spirit webs with allomantic powers that can draw more investiture than even lerasium mistborn would be able to, much less any allomancer born to their powers in that era. So, here's what I'm imagining Era 4 to look like. A long, thin ship stands up on the ground, surrounded by a large, ringed tower. The tower activates, each ring activating a constant upward steelpush on the ship, sending it up and up, faster and faster, like an allomantic rail gun. Once in space, the ship stores its weight as it determines its course by going through similar, larger rings in space. Then, in the back, a large, powerful cadmium bubble activates, and in the front, a similar bendalloy bubble activates. Space time is compressed in the front, and expanded in the back, sending the ship to speeds that are faster than light. In the middle of the long ship, between the large bubbles, smaller, nested cadmium bubbles multiplicatively slow down time for the people waiting through the voyage. It probably also has another form of propulsion, perhaps a solar sail or ionic engines or something. It could land something on a new planet by simply finding a large enough metal deposit to push against as it descends. Now, my hope is that either I will get the chance to ask him about space compression next time I see him, or that someone else will get around to asking it. Given that he worked with Peter closely on the physics of speed bubbles, and that an understanding of space time is fairly universal, I can't imagine that he would create a power like speed bubbles where they manipulate time in such a way, and NOT have it affect space as well, especially as it affecting space leads into exactly the sorts of discoveries we expect from scadrial at some point. Frankly, I'm more surprised that I can't seem to remember this being mentioned before. edit: oh, and I figured I should mention this thought about Era 4 here. Brandon has always made it clear Era 4 isn't going to be the Avengers. My thought is that instead, it's going to be more akin to Star Trek. With a more focused plot line.

  2. Nate heard a beep amid the gunshots as he slowed to avoid running into Liam's Samba. In his hesitation, his Mobile lit up in the picture frame on his dash. "Who sent me th..." He started, tapping the notification banner that had popped down to tell him about a "media message" he had received. He quieted as he saw what it was. The message opened to display a photo of Kokichi covered in what appeared to be oil, apparently talking to Nathan - now wearing a duster - and Jade. There were two others in the picture, but Nate didn't recognize them. They were all outside what was clearly an old sports stadium, though Nate couldn't recall having seen it. "'Found your friends.' Who is this?" Nate was worried now. His Mobile was not a known number in the area. "... Celia must have given it to them, but who is this?" Nate pulled his car alongside the van and rolled down his window, now that he was protected from fire by the other vehicle's massive frame. "Tell him they're at a stadium!" He shouted to a random injured woman who it seemed was about to climb into Liam's van. His voice cut clearly over the gunfire, and he was pretty sure she'd heard him. He glanced in the left mirror and saw a black van turn off into a side street. "Wonder who they could be?" He muttered.

  3. Megan fell painfully to the rooftop as Allison dropped her roughly before alighting gently a few feet away. "Still getting used to the flying?" Megan said with a touch of sarcasm. "Or just annoyed that I managed to find you?" Allison stood two steps away, not offering any assistance as Megan stumbled up onto her feet. Megans words barely seemed to register at all as her sister continued to look impassively on. Silently. "We're alone now Allison, you can-" "Don't!" Allison interrupted "Don't call me that. Don't make me do something we'd both regret." Megan withdrew, holding her arms around herself defensively as she looked at her sister, stunned. Their first time seeing each other in so long and that was what she said? She wanted to be called by those stupid nicknames that they'd thought up when they gained their powers? "You ran." Megan said flatly. "You left me alone in that town, in the middle of a sparking war and all you care about is that I call you Impact?" Allison stared back, eyes still hot with anger and a hint of disappointment. It was a look that Megan was used to receiving, usually when she said something monumentally stupid and got both of them into trouble, but they were alone now right? They could both speak freely. So why was Allison still so quiet? Why didn't she say something? Why didn't she explain what had kept them apart? Why she'd had to abandon her sister and flee? Surely some Epic from the Dalles had been after her, chasing her, and she'd needed to go into hiding. She'd left Megan behind to protect her, taking the danger for herself like she always did. "Don't use my name. Not ever. But especially not here." Allison said, her eyes already changing. Becoming cold and distant once more. "I don't need to give anyone here any more information about myself." Megan stared, disbelieving as Allison avoided answering. Sure they'd been apart for a while but her sister couldn't have changed that much could she? Where was the cheeky smile that only Megan ever got to see? The one Allison wore whenever they'd finished pulling off a prank and both managed to regroup safely. "What's happened to you?" Megan asked. "And that guy you were staring at before, were you fighting another Epic? That's not how we do thing, you said we needed to play it safe." "No, you need to play it safe Meg." Allison said. "I'm literally bulletproof, I could take a dozen Epics like that down if they're stupid enough to challenge me. He wasn't even powerful enough to use his abilities to attack, just use human toys like the soldiers in that stupid town." Allison strode up to her sister, eyes bright and furious once again, blazing with anger and power. "The days of hiding from the turf wars in Portland are over for me. I don't hide from horror stories of High Epics anymore. I am a High Epic. I don't need you anymore, just go home and keep yourself safe." Go home. Like she could just forget the months she'd spent tracking Allison, tracking sightings and guessing where she was heading. Just head back to the wasteland that Oregon had become and try to rebuild something? Megans vision blurred as tears caught in her eyelashes, mixing with the dirt that had been kicked up by her fall. She angrily rubbed the mess out of the way, whirling upon her sister to give her a piece of her mind. But Impact had gone. Again.

  4. As bullets whizzed through the air, the person just stared at Liam for a moment. They locked eyes, and he was surprised to find… determination in her gaze. Her pursuers continued to lay down suppression. And then she stepped towards the van. It happened incredibly fast and horrifically slow at the same time. A bullet ripped through her abdomen. Pain gripped her expression. Liam could almost perceive a hesitation in the gunfire, if only for a split-second. The woman crumpled to the ground. But then she pressed onwards, scramble-crawling to the van. Unfortunately, that meant the gunmen’s barrels were pointed in his direction. A few rounds glanced off the hood. Sparks, Liam thought. At least I built this thing for this. He heard a thump on the side door. The woman. Sparks, he thought again as he grit his teeth and grabbed the shotgun. Lowering the window just enough to poke the gun through, Liam blasted off two warning shots at the approaching gunmen. They fell back accordingly. Almost… too easily, a voice from the back of his mind whispered. He fired a final shot before reaching over to open the side door. It slid back, revealing the pain-wracked face of the woman. “Get in,” he ordered.

  5. It was done. What had once been a simple scholarly interest had now become a single-minded obsession, heedless of the politics that funded it. With Pyrus by his side he worked over the magic, compiling decades of knowledge into a single scalpel of work, aimed at the brick wall of a problem that had tormented him for weeks. Months, maybe. He had lost track of time. The Liebrarian’s goal was simple: Get past the barrier wall. Behind the simplicity lay endless reams of layered hurdles. The DA had designed the barrier to be impossible to penetrate. It extended below the ground, a perfect sphere surrounding the Worldspike, blocking off all three Realms from matter and energy and investiture alike. Rashan's works had outlined the basics. The detainment unit had supplied the rest. You needed Administrator access to enter the barrier. The Administrator was stuck inside. An unforseen catch-22 made access inside virtually impossible. It had taken a few days to find a possible loophole, with assistance from the detainment unit. A month to experiment and find the parameters of that loophole, and exactly how far things needed to be stretched to break the barrier. Many more months to refine their plan and organise it. Alum had scoured the city for people with specific types of investiture, visited other worlds to read in the great libraries of Elantris and Kharbranth, and experimented with various weather phenomenons. It had all come together now. The meeting had been set carefully, in accordance with the predictions of the stormwards. The timing would have to be perfect. They made an odd group. A tired Azish man with a spren on his shoulder, standing next to a being made of light, formed out of Selish symbols. Various Liebrarians moved about, checking the preparations. Finally, groups of magic users, hand-picked, filled the rest of the street that led up towards the barrier. A division of Nicrobursters sourced locally. Those had been the hardest to find. Easier to recruit were Elantrians, Bloodsealers, Chay-Shan users and Forgers, each making up their own small crews. Exactly two dozen recruits in total. The wind began to pick up from behind, heralding the beginning of the operation. An Alleystorm was brewing; one of the strongest yet, the stormwardens had assured him. He wondered if it was enough. There was a joke, somewhere, in the fact that he had spent all this time labouring over the project and he still didn't know if it would work. He turned to face the others, and they quieted. The release of Voidus and the guardian would shape the face of this planet. "Ladies and gentlemen. The Alleystorm is building. It's time to approach the barrier. Anyone who wishes to assist us is free to do so. The plan begins now." The group moved forward, down the street. A hundred metres of wide alleyway lay between them and their goal. Alum wondered if anyone would try to stop them. Time to break the barrier.

  6. One moment Max was kneeling by Solace, and in the next he was somewhere else. In some sort of hall, with chairs lined up, and an altar? Standing up Max immediately collapsed on the ground, smiling. He hadn't felt this light in forever! He'd become so used to wearing his armour around, now that he was somehow wearing a suit, he felt so light. Continuing to lie on the ground, he listened to Althea. She was right, Solace had saved them again. She asked if he wanted her to check the link, but then said it could wait. Max found it difficult to contain worry for Solace, but he pushed that to later and focused on now. If Solace teleported them... it meant he'd used his powers for good. Which meant he'd faced his fears. Which meant he was practically in no danger from the wannabe lord and his demonic Kandra. Getting into a crouching position and slowly leaning on a wall to get him up, he looked around. "What do you think of this?" Althea spoke and Max turned, and saw her, and blinked. She was also in different clothes. She was in a dress, and she gestured to it, as well as the hall. Max looked to her, and the hall, wondering what she meant. What did he think of the hall? Then it all clicked. The dress, the altar, the clothes. It was a wedding hall. Immediately a spike of shock went through him and his heartbeat started racing. Woah. A wedding? He hadn't been to many weddings. What was he supposed to do? On one hand, it was awesome. On the other... He looked to Althea and saw her face. It looked worried. Did she want to do the wedding? Max didn't want to put pressure on her. Realising he hadn't answered the question, Max wondered what to say. "It's..." he swallowed his doubts and smiled. "It's pretty cool, I think. I mean, unless you don't think that. We can talk abo- it's just really unexpected, and - I mean - I'm fine with whether that's bad or just really good." He winced, realising he hadn't made any sense. "What about you?"

  8. Personally, I take this to mean that Evi is gone and this has far more to do with Dalinar than her. Any thinking part of her is gone. The Spiritual corpse/remnant/echo/whatever word you choose is, in my opinion (and at this level of discussing specifics of the Spiritual, all we really have is opinion), is all of the information of Evi's life. More importantly as far as Dalinar is concerned, it should contain all of the Connection to and from Evi while she lived. I think that these Connections are what was actively blocked that stopped Dalinar's memories of her, and even prevented him from remembering her name when heard. Her name was said, the connection was blocked, and the word slipped from his mind. So what I think happened here is that Evi had to at least have been capable of that forgiveness. I don't think that she hated him. But with her gone, those memories and feelings of her were filtered through his own Cognitive aspect. When he heard her screaming it was because deep down, that's what he felt she should be doing. She died in pain because of him, and he blamed himself for it rightfully, and so he heard her pain and tears because of him. When he reached a point that he was able to forgive himself, that he needs to focus on being a better man and not dwell on what he did, he was able to hear the love and capacity for forgiveness that she died with. It's all head Canon, but that's how I think it works.

  9. The horns blared. The agent almost looked bored. Come on. This isn't enough? The sparks more do you want me to do?? Bullets continued to rip through the air around Taya, pinning her behind cover. Kind of a waste of ammo, that. Taya was starting to not like the Circle very much. She could sympathize with pissing off the paragovernment (definitely traveled that road before), but leaving a stranger to die? Have the decency to fall for a perfectly good wounded gazelle gambit, dammit. Regrettably, retreat wasn't really an option. Either Taya caught his attention for real, or she gave up on her best hope to cure herself. She had an idea, but it wasn't necessarily a good one. This was gonna suck. This was really gonna suck. Best not think about it too much. Taya stood up, made one step forward, leaving cover behind her. It took a second to register. The bullet had passed through her kidney. The first instant of pain threatened to eclipse her thoughts. She was on the ground. She could see a look of shock cross the gunman's face, but it was quickly concealed. This had to look authentic. Even if getting shot wasn't remotely part of the plan. Jayce was gonna kill her for that, once the operation was done with. Taya grit her teeth and scrambled to her feet, taking shelter behind the car itself to absorb the storm of projectiles. Her arm covered the site of injury as if to defend it; pressing on it only made the pain worse. On the bright side, she would heal from it soon if things panned out. Welp. This had better work.

  10. Hey all. I'm guessing everyone reading this is already aware but just in case you're new/missed it; the Stormlight Archive will be produced in two five-book arcs. This means there will of course, be a gap between the books. From what I've seen/read it sounds like the consensus is 15 years. (Guessing there's a WoB I haven't read on the topic.) I suspect there will be something pretty momentous at the end of book 5 to cap things off. Now what do you suppose that could be? I don't have any solid theories myself yet, but varying ideas all running amok through my grey brain matter. *** Here's a not-entirely logical progression that's going through my brain about all this on the fly. Firstly, what would slow things down for a bit? Ie. Why is there the gap? I get it from a technical perspective, acts, pacing, etc, but there has to be an in-universe reason for the gap as well. I'm guessing it's going to be something pretty bad. The end of the first arc will undoubtedly have some sort of fitting conclusion for the first crew (Kaladin/Shallan/Dalinar/etc) but I don't see things ending, er, happily... There needs to be a reason for the next arc to come around in the first place. A reason for the first group to go on hiatus for the interval as well. I doubt anything terribly important is going to happen during the gap. Or if it is it will be off-screen, referenced in the back 5 flashbacks. So a conclusion with a bit of a slowing down, but the promise of problems arising again. (Otherwise why have a gap at all?) Few things... First, Lift doesn't need stormlight to use her surges. That alone has me believing we'll get to a point where no one but her has access to their powers. How that's done I don't know, but the simple fact that everyone but her needs it to access their surges makes it pretty easy to see there will be a point where no one can use it, but her. Second, the reaction the Stormfather has to Odium. IMHO, the Stormfather is terrfied of him. But it was too much from a stoic stolid Stormfather for me to just brush off. Third, throughout the books we're seeing small tidbits of info passed to us in regards to Stormlight acting almost like a drug. Kaladin himself worries, "was this what it would be like every time he ran dry". At some point, someones going to run dry and it's not going to be pretty methinks! Well, what if everyone runs dry? (Everyone that isn't awesome that is.) Fourth, this quote from the Stormfather. "To fight directly might coax out forces that could hurt him, as he has been hurt before. Those scars do not heal. To pick a champion, then lose, will only cost him time. He has that in plenitude. He still will not agree easily, but it is possible he will agree. If presented with the option in the right moment, the right way. Then he will be bound. Time, the Stormfather said. Which, though dross to him, is the most valuable thing a man can have." Time itself is a win, but then if it's a win, time will have a cost. That gap between books may not just be a "gap". It could be the product of a momentary win. A momentary win with a cost...? What is the cost? ... Odium(or something) kills the Stormfather. No more highstorms. No more Stormlight. I'm sure there will be some tit for tat in this exchange. The loss of the Stormfather as the price for winning the time between books. Odium's great counter-stroke to a plan from the KR that goes awry perhaps. In that same vein, I go back to Lift. She doesn't need Stormlight to surgebind... she'll have access to powers, and I could see her being the reason Stormlight comes back in book 6. It also fits in with the Honor/Cultivation duality we have. The front 5 seem particularly relevant to Honor. Cultivation is just sort of sitting back biding her time. Except we know she's not just sitting back. She directly impacted Dalinar like a chess piece to counter Odium's Champion plot. Cultivation seems to be playing the long game, and if I had to guess I'd say Cultivation is going to be more of the theme in the back 5 to compliment Honor in the front. Lift being something of her Champion possibly? (Thus she took from Lift the need for Honor and replaced it with sustenance, cultivation.) It also leaves us in an interesting, yet at the same times almost boring, point in the books. The perfect place for a 15 year gap. No radiance for the Radiants, a reason to slow down, retire, move onto other things, their lives. *** This is all off the top of my head as I write this and ponder, so now it's time for your ideas! (Cause I'm not at all sure I'm on the right track, albeit it makes some sense to me.) Cheers

  11. When Althea was able to see something again, she stood in a room. It was decorated, but she ignored that, instead looked at Max. He was breathing, still kneeling on the ground. He seemed alright and her shoulders sagged in relief. "He saved us, again." She whispered and only then realized, what Max was wearing, what she herself was wearing. "Shards." Now she looked around, a wedding? Althea took a step back, suddenly had a hard time breathing, or thinking. Was she really supposed to marry him right here and now? He hadn't even asked her, they hadn't even kissed. She didn't even know if Max wanted to marry, if their expectations aligned. Breathing in stormlight she used it to clear her head, to force down the panic rising in her throat. They could talk about this. They could always walk away and come back later. "Max?" She tried to ask him, but instead gave up after his name. How did you ask if he wanted to walk away, and what would it mean if he said yes? He had told her he wanted to stay with her, but a wedding, a wedding was important, it was a central part, it was... "Do you think I should look for the link to Solace? Check if it's still there?" Cringing at her question her eyes never left him, fearful to see how he would react, what he would make of the situation. She hoped he would see past her words, past business, past the later, and for one time let it be now. Fear, clenched down her stomach. What if he thought that this had been her idea, that she wanted to force him to do something. Althea gathered her courage, took a deliberate breath. She had to listen to her own advise. She was afraid he would discard her, when nothing, nothing he had done indicated it. And yet she almost panicked at the thought that he would walk away, leave her. Another breath, steadying her. She was who she was. Either he loved her, or he didn't, but she couldn't ruin it with her fear. A third breath, looking for the words. "No, that's not what I mean. It can wait. For once it has to wait." We are more important. "What do you think of this?" Her hand gesturing at the dress, the room. Not later, for once it would be now. @I think I am here.

  18. At the point that Dalinar hears Evi's voice, the barrier between the 3 realms is very thin, and I am pretty sure that Dalinar, with access to the Spiritual Realm, was able to get forgiveness directly from Evi before she died. Time is not an arrow in the spiritual realm, and spatial position has no meaning. It's like if all of reality were compressed into a single point. Distance is meaningless, and the dimension of time is most likely carried into the spiritual realm as a function of the limited understanding of the vessel or entity experiencing the spiritual realm (due to their preconceived notion that time moves only forward, and non-axial motions in time are beyond their ability to comprehend). In the physical realm (the realm of perceptions) space is fixed and time is an arrow moving forwards as sentient beings experience it. But time and space aren't similarly constrained in the Spiritual realm, so Evi's soul, on it's transit to the great beyond existed in the spiritual realm, just as Dalinar touched the spiritual realm when he combined all 3 realms. The timining of the transit through the spiritual realm is irrelevant, just as is the distance separating Thaylen City from the Rift, they both existed outside of time and space, and in that place, Dalinar received forgiveness directly from Evi.

  19. Just my two cents here but... If the Stormfather dies, and stormlight stops, Roshar becomes a dead husk. Not only human society suffers the economic issues and the death of their way if life by soulcast Era being useless, but also ecological collapse. Skyeels no longer fly. Chasm fiends and other gretshells die under their own weight (The Reshi isles are doomed). And from what we saw of passing storms rejuvenating the spren in Shadesmar, there may be a Cognitive collapse as well. The end of the Stormfather is the end of everything.

  21. My first impressions: --I was kind of weirded out by Spensa at first. She was a strange character and I sometimes got frustrated with her dumb decisions, like stealing Jerkface's power matrix. But I think that initial strangeness really grew on me and really helped me see her beautiful character arc. I was so honored to get to see her grow as a person, and it was amazing to get to see how she grew from being a naive teenager to a more mature and insightful young woman. Especially when I saw how she grew from someone who wanted to fly more than anything to someone who was willing to give up her dream for the greater good, I mean, wow, that was awesome! -- One thing I noticed that I really loved about the side characters is that when you first meet them, they all seem to fit into the classic stereotypes, like the Ray of sunshine, the bully and his cronies: crafty and muscle, as well as the rich girl, the athlete and shy kid. Honestly I didn't think I was going to remember them all, but I loved how he took those first impressions and then was able to reveal more about them and make them into relatable and compelling individuals that each stood out in their own unique way. FM, Hurl, Morningtide, Kimmalyn, Arturo, Bim, Nedd, and Jorgen were all awesome in their own special way. -- I noticed that as she matured and as her view if Jerkface evolved, she called him Jorgen instead of Jerkface gradually as the book went on. Idk it was cool to see -- I appreciated the fact that the events were realistic in battle. People died and people grieved, and it turned out that not everyone is cut out for that kind of stuff and it's okay. It's human. I really liked that. -- AAAACK I BLEW THROUGH 400 PAGES IN ONE DAY BECAUSE I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN -- I really liked Rig's little arc in this one, from someone who lets the dreams of others overshadow his own, into someone who found and pursued something he truly loved. -- Also I loved Spensa and Rig's relationship. "I'm an only child but somehow I still have a sister who gets me in trouble all the time" -- M-bot was great. Mushrooms!!! -- "We can talk all night! This is great!" I thought about normal subjects to talk about. "Like... Boys?..." "Stars no! Flight strategies!" I loved that part Okay sorry for the long post I just really loved that book!

  22. So now the sun is actually a star, but I'm not sure that average Rosharans are keen on this, so I wonder if there would be a difference between the spren of the Rosharan sun, and starspren. Szeth refers to the sun as "the god of gods" which got me thinking about possible moonspren, the Sibling, and all, not that I was able to hypothetically infer anything from it all, except that maybe the spren of the sun is the Sibling. Actually, hmm... Here's a nifty guess: Nightwatcher = Spren of Roshar the planet Stormfather = Spren of Roshar's moons (their gravity causes ocean tides that cause the highstorms) The Sibling = Spren of the sun EDIT: Also, I wonder if the Rosharan moons are colored differently due to an at least surface preponderance of corresponding-color gemstones. IIRC (I just read the section so I hope I'm remembering it correctly!) Kaladin says that one of the moons has a sapphire color. Sapphire is the polestone for air, which is a major part of highstorms. However, there's a violet moon and none of the polestones seem to be predominantly violet unless smokestone somehow counted (I don't know what smokestone is supposed to look like) and emeralds, the main green type, are the polestone for pulp, which doesn't seem too highstorm-y.

Ranette and Mira, because Ranette's like that. *remembers meme she saw that once* NO, WAIT. Kelsier and Mare. Which couple could you not live without?

  24. I am wondering if Renarin is the first person that Glys bonded or if there were others? For example that other truthwatcher in the epigraph that forsaw things, is it possible he didn’t bond a different corrupted truthwatcher spren, but was a different person who bonded with Glys a long time ago? I posit that what makes Renarin special isn’t the bond with Glys peesay as that has been done before. But that because of the corruption and potential Odium there has always been a risk of someone who bonded with Glys breaking under the influence of visions and potential corruption of Odium. What makes Renarin special is that he did NOT break. And when he failed to break, when he ACCEPTED what he saw, is when he changed the future and became invisible to Odium. If this sounds crazy, remember that as much as Oathbringer has been about people taking responsibility. It’s also been about people who refused to break vs people who did. Kaladin to Amaram: “Did thebear forge the spear? No. It simply identified the spear that did not break.” Dalinar to Odium: “You cannot have my pain.” etc

  26. I am doing a re-read of the books right now and Kal's 4th ideal has me so curious! I agree 100% with Rhaiynebow's idea above about plate. Plate is clearly about protecting yourself and I don't see it being gifted to someone who doesn't value themselves as someone worthy of being saved or protected. My vote for the fourth ideal is "I will ensure my own safety before assisting others".

  33. First time reading, I wasn't a fan of Elend. Second time through I think I realised his struggle more with his character growth. I ended up loving that Elend gave Vin his trust. He wanted to know what she was thinking and all that but the trust he gave her was stronger than most relationships I know of. I think that's where he really wins brownie points with me.

  36. well, that part about civilization and ftl seems more bigot lingo than anything else. "A civilized people wear smokings and cravats. Those guys don't, so we can take their stuff and make of them indentured slaves impose our culture on them and kill any who rebels show them the right way" And I already stated elsewhere that attacking with lethal force a peaceful fleet and then nuking civilian populations on a regular base are not civilized acts. But of course, since they have ftl and humans didn't anymore, then they could nuke them. They could nuke them because they are more civilized... which further supports the "bigot lingo" interpretation

  37. So the cats out of the bag! I mentioned in my review that I felt that some of the reveals weren't my favorite. I'd love to know what people's thoughts on the information we get regarding the following mysteries was and how people liked them, warning, this list spoils what answers we get: We're doing a podcast on skyward soon and I'll go into my specific opinions on that. More questions! Who is everyone's favourite wingmates? What do people think about Spensa as a character and the growth and changes she goes through throughout the book? Just gimme opinions in generallll!!!

  38. What if the entire "seeing the future is of the voidbringers" idea is wrong though? Corrupting religion isn't a first in the Cosmere, and seems to not even be a first on Roshar. How do we know Truthwatchers couldn't see into the future in some way?

  41. I recommend reading [Redacted] as "magic." The purpose of these chapters is to show what the Bridge Four sequence was like before Kaladin came along. The magic Jerick is using really has very little to do with the Bridge Four plot, and I felt it gave away too much that Brandon is likely to use in the future.

  43. Patrick Rothfuss IT WAS NIGHT AGAIN. Shinovar lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts. The most obvious part was a hollow, echoing quiet, made by things that were lacking. If there had been a wind it would have sighed through the grass, set the chickens crowing for the sun and brushed the silence down the road like trailing autumn leaves. If there had been a crowd, even a handful of Shin left alive, they would have filled the silence with prayers, the clatter and clamor one expects from a religious people. If there had been music…but no, of course there was no music. In fact there were none of these things, and so the silence remained. Inside the burnt out house a pair of men huddled at one corner of the bar. They drank with quiet determination, avoiding serious discussions of what they had just seen, why they had been spared. In doing this they added a small, sullen silence to the larger, hollow one. It made an alloy of sorts, a counterpoint. The third silence was not an easy thing to notice. If you listened for an hour, you might begin to feel it in the smouldering wooden floor underfoot and in the rough, sacred stone surrounding the ruins. It was in the weight of the silver sheath that held the black blade leaking dark smoke. It was in the slow back and forth of a shattered Oathstone rubbing along the blade of a dead Herald. And it was in the hands of the man who stood there, sharpening ancient weapons with noone left to kill. The man had no hair, his head shining in the flames. His eyes were black and distant, and he moved with the subtle certainty that comes from hearing many things, seeing things no man should. Shinovar was now his, just as the third silence was his. This was appropriate, as it was the greatest silence of the three, wrapping the others inside itself. It was deep and wide as autumn’s ending. It was heavy as a great river-smooth stone. It was the patient, cut-flower sound of a man who is waiting to die.

  44. I could see Steel Inquisitors, as they're doing the "messy" part of Hemelurgy, singing a hard-rock version of "You'll Be In My Heart" "A Whole New World" for Siri and someone (IDK who) when she first comes to Hallandren. When Kelsier first meets vin, "Friend Like Me" I could also see Lightsong singing a parody version of Aristocats' song "Everyone Wants to be A Cat" titled "Everyone wants to be a God" I just want to see Bluefingers sing "Be Our Guest" for no reason at all.

  45. It's finished! Or, as finished as it will get for a while. I printed a physical copy to give to Brandon at Boskone, and he seemed to enjoy it a lot. I wish that I had been able to put more illustrations in it, but there simply wasn't time. I am inordinately fond of my Thaylen eyebrows illustration, though. I feel like it really captures the spirit of the mashup. I'm also quite pleased with the Unkalaki tongue twisters. If only I had figured out a way to stick "Airsick lowlanders!" in somewhere. Anyway, here is the book! (Spoilered for size) I hope you like it! I also had some partial drafts for Stormlight versions of other Seuss books that I didn't make the cut for inclusion. So there may eventually be a sequel or improved draft that includes The Bitter Battle Book (about the war on the shattered plains) and a version of Green Eggs and Ham ("Amaram, Lord Amaram, I do not like the Diagram").

  46. Since Brandon is Mormon, it only seems appropriate to write it in the style of the Book of Mormon. Chapter 1 1. It came to pass in the 5th year of the reign of Elhokar, King of Alethkar, that the Stormfather spake unto Dalinar saying, They must unite, or this people will be utterly destroyed. 2. And Dalinar raised up his voice unto the people of Alethkar, saying unto them that they must unite, and live by the Codes that their fathers has delivered to them. 3. And there rose up one Brightlord Sadeas, who said, What is this that thou sayest? Should we believe one man, though he should preach that the world should be destroyed? Behold, I say it is the effect of a frenzied mind. And that which ye say are ancient prophecies, are the foolish traditions of your fathers. For no man knoweth of things to come, but every man prospers according to his genius and conquers according to his strength. 4. And the people hearkened not unto Dalinar. Chapter 54 1 And the servant of Sadeas rose up and swore in his wrath that the army of Dalinar should not perish from Roshar. And his name was Kaladin. And the spirit of Honor was upon him, and her name was Sylphrenia, which being interpreted means the joyful wind. 2 He was a large and a mighty man and he sought for the covenants of his fathers, that he might receive the blessings of the Knight Radiant. 3 And He smote upon the army of the Parshendi insomuch that they did flee before him.

  49. I have never handed out so many upvotes before. This thread is awesome, especially since I'm already a fan of Kaladin/Jasnah or Kalasnah (prefer that do Jasnahdin or whatever). I've already suggested it in FeatherWriter's shippingthread, but I havent' been able to formulate it as well as several of you guys in this thread. Best arguments for a Kaladin/Jasnah relationship. Tarah is mentioned on The Way of Kings pages 874 and 880. She is quite subtly not mentioned in the "death-list" of page 919. I honestly do not see the charm of a Shallan/Adolin. Am I the only one who kind of liked Dalan and hopes Adolin stays with her? Shallan/Renarin, on the other hand, is cute.
