  4. Funny how different things can feel for different people. I'm incredbly grateful for how it was resolved and that there wasn't some stupid love triangle drama. I find both Shallan's and Kaladin's reasoning believable. I liked their ship back in WoR, but I was never really invested, and I truly believe both of them need someone more stable in their lives. Shallan and Adolin are a good match, they have chemistry, and after I found them a bit annoying back in WoR, I ame to like them as a couple. Also, I believe Shallan made some progress during OB. It's just that a trauma like hers doesn't simply go away. Also, bear in mind, Kaladin doesn't really get Shallan. He sees her smiling and he thinks she's somehow dealing with everything she went through better than he - but int ruth, I believe the opposite is the case. Kaladin knows nothing about Shallan's split personality issues, while Adolin is much more aware of this and still wants to be with her and he can deal with this. Kaladin has enough to deal with by himself. Also, he is a dork and his social skills really have room for improvement. It's very realistic that he mistook his feelings for Shallan for romantic attraction. By the end of OB, I believe all three of them are in a good place - as good as is possible given the circumstances. There are no bitter feeling between Kaladin and Adolin or Shallan and Kaladin. They're friends. I like that a lot.

  6. A question arose recently about removing Hemalurgic spikes safely, and the easiest answer I could come up with is that since Spiritual Healing can save you from being the donor of a spike it should equally be able to save you from the fallout of a spike being removed, since after the spliced spiritweb contained in the spike is ripped back off you'd basically be in the same situation. But that got me thinking: We know Spiritual healing can allow allow you to make changes to your self, centering around your own personal identity, though usually it's very limited in scope, along the lines of whether you have come to accept the damage as part of you or not. So, imagine you were spiked for long enough, and had reached the point where you had 100% accepted them as part of your Self (Im looking at you, Marsh), then had a spike removed while channeling F-Gold. Could you grow back your own spiritweb to replace the spliced piece(s), once you reach the point where the splices piece(s) have become fundamental to your platonic ideal? Generally I would think that you cannot self-hypnosis yourself into new abilities, but in the case where your spiritweb has years of firsthand experience being in that shape, would it be able to replicate it?

  7. Sooo since the small note I made on my latest Brandon meme post sparked an interesting conversation about wedding ceremonies and how they go wrong so often in the cosmere books I thought starting its own thread would be appropriate. So far I think only Raoden and Sarene's final wedding in Elantris has been the only wedding ceremony we've seen "on screen" without getting interrupted or shortened to "we have this person here to witness us saying yes". At first I thought it funny how something always happened to interrupt the ceremony (and even though I felt bad for Sarene in the beginning of the book I did chuckle at the fact we skipped her wedding because her husband had "died"). After getting invested to the characters, especially Adolin and Shallan, through multiple books and see their relationship develop and build up little by little I do wish to see a proper wedding ceremony where the characters can have one day of happiness together without fights or embarrasment... @Elandera brought up a good point (in the meme thread) about wedding ceremonies being boring to read if they follow the same formula we see in real life and thus they are skipped to save pages for more important and interesting events in the books. Personally I would still consider the wedding ceremonies interesting content since they are happening in a different culture and the inner thoughts of characters we are used to seeing in trouble or battles are interesting to read in this kind of life changing situation. I liked the description of a Survivorist wedding ceremony. And of course, the other characters' reactions and interactions with the couple would be fun to read about. Of course, I don't think making the wedding ceremony short is always bad, I really liked how Dalinar and Navani did it in their circumstances. But I guess I'm just still salty about Adolin and Shallan's wedding getting cut off right when it was getting good:'D I know Oathbringer was already a mammoth-of-a-book but still;_; (I was going to write "to fit it in we can throw away--" but couldn't find anything to end the sentence with since I love the whole book>_>) Anyway, what do you think? Will we ever see a proper on screen wedding ceremony with detailed descriptions and that won't go wrong or otherwise get interrupted in the cosmere again:D? Or maybe we could get a wedding ceremony on screen and the after party would get absolutely destroyed? (Also sorry for any typos, I'll fix stuff later if needed, I'm writing this in a hurry>_>)

  8. Tena nodded in approval. It was true. She started playing her own version of ‘Deck the Halls’. “Deck the halls with Koloss skulls, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Astride our trusty steeds, the chulls. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Don we now our mistcloak apparel, Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la To troll the ancient Ookla day carol. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la See the wild Ooklas before us. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la “Set your traps and join the hunting!” Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Follow me now in merry measure, Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la While I tell of Ookla day treasure. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Fast away the old book passes, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Hail the new book, lads and lasses. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Sing we joyous, all together, Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la Heedless of the Stormfather’s temper. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”

  10. “Biokinesis," Quietus remarked, with marginal interest. Red didn’t clarify; it was close enough to accurate, although somewhat overstating her range of options. “Charming. I can work with this." Red flickered the tendrils back and forth, before returning most of the blood to where it’d rested, reforming the armor beneath her clothes as she pulled her coat back on. It was slightly chilly out, and the air bit at her exposed skin. Nothing particularly extreme, so nothing worth the attention. Elsewhere in the city, three heartbeats vanished before reappearing elsewhere. They’d faded into the background, but their sudden shift drew Red’s attention. She’d heard those patterns before. One belonged to a teleporter, and since teleporters were rare... Who...? He’d begun talking again— walking forward— so she hurried to catch up. "In the future, if I see fit to restrain you, you will not free yourself without permission. The same does not extend to any other members of this organization, of which you are not a part of. You are my tool. As with any tool, I must learn the ins and outs, so to speak." Red had been prey, a hunk of meat, a dog, a toy, and many other things, several too lewd to think explicitly. Tool was a familiar label, and like the others, it came with its own sets of rewards. It was a style, one practiced by distinct masters, and mistresses, and bosses of entirely unique genders. She had no preferences, only standards. Quietus spoke to set expectations and boundaries. He was in part clinical, but there was a passion behind his plain yet harsh words. Experimentation, trial and error... it would be her pleasure to be his. And her master was part of an organization, one she would not be. A fair arrangement, presumably to prevent his colleagues from stealing her away. Quietus was a man who would not tolerate competition in his affairs. Understandable, even admirable. If not ordered against such an act, Red would most certainly slay anyone who competed with her for her master’s attention. "When we finish testing your ability, I will hurt you.” He did not look at her, though she imagined he would predict her reaction. Her own heart pounded with excitement, natural blush joining artificial beneath the skin on her cheeks. She considered slicing herself a wider grin to express her enthusiasm, but hey, who knew if Quietus was into that sorta thing anyway? Besides, that was the sorta thing someone did to her, not something she’d do to herself. It’d ruin a perfectly good bonding opportunity! “It's important to establish our relationship. It will also give me a clearer picture of your strengths and weaknesses. Ideally, I would do all of this more... Comprehensively. As it is, we are going to do some of it on the job. There's a meeting I would like you to attend." A meeting? Not one he had to attend, with her along as a show of strength to the rest of the boring lame-o Epics around town, but one he wanted her to attend? Oh, this was forward indeed. "This barracks bunks ten enforcers. Kill them. To keep things interesting, I will raise the alarm five seconds after you enter the building." A command already? And one that seemed to go against some sort of order? Maybe the one he was in? Would she be a tool of treason? Quite risqué of him. She’d be happy to oblidge. Red stepped forward, the blood separating off of her. Based on the heartbeats, she could estimate where the heads of the enforcers would be. Still, no need to be precise when blunt force would do. Waves of rusty red snuck through every opening in the building, coalescing around areas just outside where the enforcers were eating. Once a good hundred or so relatively dense gallons of blood surrounded every exit, she flooded the room. Panic. Dread. Resignation. She couldn’t see their faces. The sensory feedback from her blood was faint, and it grew more so the further away from her it was. Still, the acceleration and eventual stop of all ten beats told her everything she needed to know. Water was dangerous, in large volumes and especially when moving quickly. Objects could get caught in its waves. Hydrokinetics, particularly those with the range of Regalia, were powerful. To call an ocean of controlled blood dangerous would be an understatement. Its viscosity made it hard to escape, and most maples, along with some failures of Epics, panicked when faced with so much of the stuff. Red had long since grown used to the omnipresent smell of rust, so she used the natural disgust against her victims. Their revulsion didn’t let them think. The panic made them breath quickly, letting the blood into their lungs and drowning them. It was, from what she’d witnessed, a rather unpleasant way to die. And this was just the second trick up her coat sleeves.

  12. Wow, not liking Lift is one of the hottest (and IMO worst) takes I've ever read on the shard. I think it fundamentally misunderstands her character, especially after Edgedancer - she is intentionally inane in really serious and dangerous situations because that's how she deals with trauma and fear, and also because she doesn't want to admit that she cares deeply about helping people. Her background - at least what little we know of it - is actually very similar to Vin's, she just has a very different way of coping. Also, she's 13 - I was certainly making crude jokes at incredibly inappropriate times at that age, as I think most people were.

  15. Some more (low effort) memes in the cosmere. I have too much time in my hands. I finished reading Elantris today: Couple of memes from Roshar since I intend on diving back there soon: And couple from Mistborn Era 2 since I just love Wax and Steris: I wonder if Brandon has something against writing wedding ceremonies that don't get ruined? The weddings that go through without too much hassle are skipped instead of fully written out (like Adolin and Shallan's) or the characters get married without an actual proper ceremony (Vin and Elend, Wax and Steris' second attempt).

  17. So this is currently where I think we are with the government. There is an official census that determines how many people are a part of each guild. After the census is taken, there is an official number of people that each guild has. If that number is equal or greater than five, then that guild is a great guild. If there is less than 5 but more than or equal to 2 members, they are considered a normal guild. If there is 1 or 0 members of that guild according to the official census, they are not counted as a guild for purposes of the government. The government consists of one legislature that is in charge of making and passing laws. If you are a great guild you automatically have a seat and can insert a representative into the government. There are an equal number of great guild seats and normal guild seats, no matter how many normal guilds are registered. I personally think that the normal guilds should hold a vote among themselves to determine which ones get to put representatives into the seats. Regardless, there is some way that we decide which normal guilds get to put reps into the government. Once the legislature is formed, they can make laws and other governmenty stuff. The DA is not a part of the government. And neither GUESS Nor the precursors will have spots in the government. The Newcago court will send an ambassador to the government to address issues regarding the court. Once the government is formed, they need to determine a code of laws, and I think they should determine each guilds boundaries, either within the city or in a larger sense of the entire alleyverse. Here is the official census results as of now. There are still a lot of people who need to PM archer about where they fall in this. If you have not, please do so. 18. One reason I'm really looking forward to it is I think willshapers will be one of the most interesting orders and we'll get to see Venli mad shaping wills yo. I feel like most or all of the flashbacks will include Venli from eshonai's perspective (reinforced by this) She will have no idea what's going on but we will and I think we'll find out a fair bit about Odium's plan that led to the Everstorm. I also think we'll get more stories from their mother which will teach us a lot about the Listeners and therefore about the False Desolation and Ba Ado Mishram. But yes most of all I look forward to more Songs and finding out much more about the history of humans on Roshar.

  20. It’s an interesting idea. I feel like from a story point of view it needs to be impossible. If it wasn’t you would end up with an army of Fullborn by the time we reach Mistborn: A Star Wars Story. An easy justification for in world mechanics could be that it is literally a foreign object in your spirit and therefore it will always feel like an intruder. You could also argue that it carries the spiritual Identity of the individual from whom it was made and is keyed to them like a metalmind. Maybe if you keep the spike for a long enough time you could regrow it when it is pulled out, but without the Investiture.

Now, with the required polite inquiry into your activities done with, I'm going to get on with why I'm really here." As he was saying this he reached into his coat and produced a Tupperware container with a seemingly normal slice of pie. "I'm not actually here to destroy your party, unless I find out that the DAAD has made another acquisition. No, I want to know if you have heard about the change of leadership in the Ghostbloods. The founder, Sebastian is what he calls himself now, has been removed. From what I can see, the Ghostbloods are falling apart. What are your thoughts?" Out of the corner of his eye he saw someone leaping off the tables eating pie. This is why I never come to these. Complete idiots abound. He summoned the One Power in case that guy decided to come toward him and eat his pie.

  33. Part of me feels like there is going to be a point where Brandon brings in other authors and/or friends to help him write or seriously outline projects. Granted, that may not be something he ever considers, or it may be something the majority of his fans see as sacrilegious, but with all these projects (and let's face it, there WILL be new ones that pop into his head that require his attention,) I feel like it is inevitable. We're already seeing that (to a degree) with Whitesand, and I can see it happening again to other non-major projects, just because there is (theoretically) only so much one person can do. (Though Brandon has done the seemingly impossible before.) All that said, it is extraordinary the work and quality Brandon puts out, and I'm just happy we get what we get. As much as I can't wait for more Stormlight or Mistborn, I love that Brandon recognizes he needs time for mental breaks and other, different projects. Watching how he balances it all in the future will be interesting in and of itself.

  41. Well, whatever happens happens. Regardless of what we'll discuss here it won't change the story he will be writing. I for one just wanted to put it out there that the whole thing just seems way too rushed and is very unlikely to be the end of it. If I'm right you'll see me telling you in about... uhm... 2 years "told you so" if not - I'll have to live with it. But as it stands now it would really really bother me - I said earlier because of how it was done but that's not entirely true - I guess the very idea of the resolve is ok - not what I would do but that's not the point. It just happened way too fast way too rushed for being a good resolve, pushed into the last few pages - felt like "ok let's get this over with" if you get what I'm saying. If he'd done that in the next book shallan "slowly" deciding that she wants adolin (everything would be slower than what we got) - ok fine all good - but here she basically blinks 2 times and "ok it's done - all good adolin it is". Also the note on how the book ends, we get that rushed ending and then it's over - right after the battle of the millennium - looks more like an endorphine rush than anything else to me. But well, we'll see what happens next looking forward to the next books One thing is sure though, if I ever have to read something along the lines of "I can't be not ok with somebody as sweet as jam at my side" I'll probably read the rest of the books on kindle instead of hardcover - easier to wipe away fluids that should stay in your stomach.

  42. That's the thing though, I would've loved to read Shallan and Adolin's wedding because it would've been possibly something different from what I've already witnessed in real life. I really love Roshar and its different cultures, not to mention its characters and their interactions. And I enojyed reading the beginning of Wax and Steris' wedding before it went wrong because I love the characters and would've loved to read about a wedding where everything went well. I should've probably started a new thread for this discussion since this is a meme thread, sorry>_> I just didn't think that little note would've sparked interest in discussing the topic in more detail. I'll make the thread later today in the cosmere section unless someone beats me to it.

  45. Part of me hopes you are right, how many times does the knife have to get twisted into Shallan's gut? But, I was just rereading the chapter that first made me suspect that Palona and Sebarial might be like the 3-fingered spy and her elderly husband from Cloak and dagger, Chapter 32 Company. It's the chapter were Shallan is recuperating after her battle with Reshiphir under the ministrations of Palona. The Chapter Epigraph is: I don't have the ebook, so I'm going to type this out and emphasize the bits that are particularly unsettling [and add annotations in square brackets]. In text they are light-heartedly dismissed, but I still think that having a pit in your private apartments covered with boards is a super villain red flag: This could totally be a red herring, but before I read this chapter, I had the same view of Sebarial and Palona as you @Govir and @What's a Seawolf?, but the fact that Sebarial is having a shady pit installed in his private apartments, and Palona kind heartedly gives Shallan "citrus" tea, and then proceeds to grill her about what she knows about the unmade, makes me highly suspicious of this pair. The effects highlighted above could just simply be that exhaustion is finally catching up to Shallan, but the drooping eyelids, the yawning, and the absent nodding all sound like an effect of a drug, possibly a truth serum administered in her tea to make sure she wasn't holding anything back about the unmade. One other datum, Palona slips into inane yet reassuring chatter after Shallan yawns and nods absently, maybe this is a sign she knows to look for that efficacious period of the truth serum had run it's course (total speculation but could be the case). One other thing, we as readers know that Ghostbloods all have a visible tattoo that shows their allegiance, and for a lot of the book Sebarial and Palona are only covered by towels making it seem like they should be easily de. This could be intentionally done to up the suprise ante when they dramatically reveal their ghostblood tattoo's during the moment of betrayal. I want to like Palona and Sebarial, but looking at the signs and clues in this chapter, I just can't trust them, and moreover I think this chapter heavily foreshadows that they are at the very least in league with the Ghostbloods, if not the secret leaders of the ghostbloods.

  47. I actually think he's going to be a pivotal character, and that his true character is far different from how we've seen him presented so far. My gut feeling is that he is a senior member of the ghostbloods, possibly even Thaidakar. The scene were Shallan meets with him and Palona in his quarters in Urithiru while he's having his floors redone was vaguely sinister and ominous. Why is he really having his floor redone, what's he hiding? I think he plays the crass buffoon to hide in plain sight, so to speak. The other high princes were quick to dismiss him at the Alethi war camps because of his pull my finger kind of jokes while he was quietly building a second center of economic power. This is intentional misdirection, and the fact that he is willing to project such an unflattering public persona is a clear indicator to me of the lengths he is willing to go to to achieve his ends (most likely power through wealth). The fact that the Ghostblood bunker is in Sebarial's warcamp seems to me to be a significant detail. The tenement style building was built with a basement (which is incredibly uncommon and expensive because of the highstorm flooding) and this was built on top of a pre-existing basement structure. This seems like something that at the very least a capable administrator like Sebarial would be aware of. Also, the trophy case collection might in fact be Sebarial's private collection of Cosmere trophies. As evidenced by his quarters in Urithiru, he is a collector and he relishes rare and exquisite items. And since his true genius is in administration, he might be that rare type of collector that sees conquest as the employment of the proper people to secure the items in question, like a wealthy british colonialist from the 19th century that paid someone to go out and secure a tiger pelt for them. I'm going to be rereading Stormlight again pretty soon, and I'll keep my eye out for signs that Sebarial and Palona are more than what they seem. If he really is Thaidakar, then having Shallan stroll so blithely into his confidence must have made him quite happy. I think there will be a moment when Shallan is very vulnerable, and these surrogate parental figures will betray her, kind of like the scene in the 80's movie Cloak and Dagger, where the kid who played Elliot from ET discovers that the kindly old man and woman that have been helping him out are really the evil super spies. Here's a video of that Scene, I saw this when I was a kid and this still gives me chills when I watch it: *EDITED: Added a bit more to the middle portion, I actually really like this theory. The thing that makes Sebarial sympathetic is his relationship with Palona, but that's a closed circle. Horrible, Machiavellian villians can still have a single person that is outside of the cruel logic of the ends justify the means that applies to everyone else. What is the use of power, wealth and prestige if you don't have anyone to share it with. I think Sebarial is like Dr. No, but instead of having a white lap cat, he chooses to have Palona by his side while he gets ready to roll in the dough while the world burns.

  49. it's worth pointing out that there are some pretty creepy and disturbing lullabies in the real world. "Rock a bye baby, on the tree top", "Alouette", and one about dying in your sleep spring to mind off the top of my head. The Shattered plains were discovered and explored by the Alethi beginning 15 years ago, but that doesn't mean that they were totally unknown or unheard of before that. The song might be a hint of lore about the shattered plains working its way into some sort of mainstream culture or possibly be a result of Odium's influence on Lin, which would certainly be an intriguing possibility. Or perhaps they refer to some other chasm entirely. After all, it's doubtful that they're exclusive to the shattered plains. I don't think you should read too much into the mention of darkness, rock. or storms in the original song (where they are not capitalised). Most lullabies reference darkness or night in one form or another, and rocks and storms are pretty much universal experiences on Roshar. I would assume crystals refers to gemstones, which ties back into the storm infusing the stones with light while the wind rocks the baby's basket. Edit: We have actually seen chasms in other places, during Kaladin's dream sequence riding on the winds, he flies over a city that's basically built into the walls of chasms.
