  1. Seriously? The ghostbusters, obviously... ... ... ... I'll leave now. : )

  2. I actually think he's going to be a pivotal character, and that his true character is far different from how we've seen him presented so far. My gut feeling is that he is a senior member of the ghostbloods, possibly even Thaidakar. The scene were Shallan meets with him and Palona in his quarters in Urithiru while he's having his floors redone was vaguely sinister and ominous. Why is he really having his floor redone, what's he hiding? I think he plays the crass buffoon to hide in plain sight, so to speak. The other high princes were quick to dismiss him at the Alethi war camps because of his pull my finger kind of jokes while he was quietly building a second center of economic power. This is intentional misdirection, and the fact that he is willing to project such an unflattering public persona is a clear indicator to me of the lengths he is willing to go to to achieve his ends (most likely power through wealth). The fact that the Ghostblood bunker is in Sebarial's warcamp seems to me to be a significant detail. The tenement style building was built with a basement (which is incredibly uncommon and expensive because of the highstorm flooding) and this was built on top of a pre-existing basement structure. This seems like something that at the very least a capable administrator like Sebarial would be aware of. Also, the trophy case collection might in fact be Sebarial's private collection of Cosmere trophies. As evidenced by his quarters in Urithiru, he is a collector and he relishes rare and exquisite items. And since his true genius is in administration, he might be that rare type of collector that sees conquest as the employment of the proper people to secure the items in question, like a wealthy british colonialist from the 19th century that paid someone to go out and secure a tiger pelt for them. I'm going to be rereading Stormlight again pretty soon, and I'll keep my eye out for signs that Sebarial and Palona are more than what they seem. If he really is Thaidakar, then having Shallan stroll so blithely into his confidence must have made him quite happy. I think there will be a moment when Shallan is very vulnerable, and these surrogate parental figures will betray her, kind of like the scene in the 80's movie Cloak and Dagger, where the kid who played Elliot from ET discovers that the kindly old man and woman that have been helping him out are really the evil super spies. Here's a video of that Scene, I saw this when I was a kid and this still gives me chills when I watch it: *EDITED: Added a bit more to the middle portion, I actually really like this theory. The thing that makes Sebarial sympathetic is his relationship with Palona, but that's a closed circle. Horrible, Machiavellian villians can still have a single person that is outside of the cruel logic of the ends justify the means that applies to everyone else. What is the use of power, wealth and prestige if you don't have anyone to share it with. I think Sebarial is like Dr. No, but instead of having a white lap cat, he chooses to have Palona by his side while he gets ready to roll in the dough while the world burns.

  5. "A few things," his new epic purred, sending tendrils of blood to unlock her cuffs with a click. Quietus smiled. It confirmed the prospect that she was stronger than she looked. She hadn't genuinely been defeated by a handful of ERA mooks. "Some boring. Tracking and empathy aren't much." Translation: I haven't properly cultivated those abilities. "Others?" She bowed in front of him, her jacket slipping off to expose her bare skin. The scars didn't subtract very much from her appeal. Blood lanced out from her back, and yet more blood gathered along her skin, coalescing in two long feelers. They unfurled and stretched out behind her back like two extra limbs, which made an approximation of jazz hands. "Biokinesis," Quietus observed. "Charming. I can work with this." He began walking, motioning for her to follow without waiting for her to keep up. The enforcers would clean up the aftermath; lets be honest, it was all they were good for. "In the future, if I see fit to restrain you, you will not free yourself without permission. The same does not extend to any other members of this organization, of which you are not a part of. You are my tool. As with any tool, I must learn the ins and outs, so to speak." He paused. "When we finish testing your ability, I will hurt you. It's important to establish our relationship. It will also give me a clearer picture of your strengths and weaknesses. Ideally, I would do all of this more... Comprehensively. As it is, we are going to do some of it on the job. There's a meeting I would like you to attend." He converged on a squat grey building, in better repair than most. "This barracks bunks ten enforcers. Kill them. To keep things interesting, I will raise the alarm five seconds after you enter the building." "Now, that's hardly fair. You're blowing this grossly out of proportion. I didn't attack your headquarters. Er, well, I guess I sort of did, but it was an accident, I swear." Guns cocked in response. Five uniformed Alberta police glared her down. "Are you sure we can't talk about it? Maybe over a box of donuts?" A warning shot broke the silence, devestating a perfectly good spot of pavement a few inches in front of Taya's right foot. "Phooey," she retorted. She ducked behind a sturdy(ish?) looking corner of appartment, avoiding a salvo of bullets. This time, they were actually positioned to kill her. Somebody threw a sparking grenade near the bend. These guys weren't messing around. Probably 'cause she was supposedly an epic. In the interests of not exploding, she risked exposing her leg to boot the grenade down the street. It was still uncomfortably loud. She really hoped that storefront hadn't belonged to anyone. "Any time now..." Gunshots continued to rip sporadically through the air, and Taya could hear voices and heavy footfalls converging on her retreat. A red Volkswagon bus appeared up the street. She expected that. What she didn't expect was the two cars that were tailing it.

  6. Sebarial is a civilization-builder, a logistics genius who likes the finer things in life. He is the kind of guy who will help put things back together after it all goes bad. He sees darkeyes as people. He is contemptuous of all the shittiest parts of Alethi society. I think he's the man.

  8. Favorite is Kaladin. By far my favorite SA character. I like that he is so caring and when he gets down he gets back up. I like that he is a teacher, he just can't help himself. He makes the people around him stronger. He is the best. Next favorites Lift, Rock (does he count?), Adolin (he knows Maya's name = close enough) in that order. I like Lift a lot. She is one tough kid and she pays attention. I like that Rock says fighting is beneath him. Adolin is pretty cool. I like that he got Maya to talk to him. Least favorite Dalinar and Szeth. Not a fan of mass murderers. Edit: I see Shallan that way too. OB convinced me she is less callous than I thought her, but I still see her as very manipulative. I like her okay. She is middling among the characters I like.

  9. As incredibly interesting as that would be, I think this is one case where Brandon is not plotting a crazy twist. I've always seen Seb and Pal as very much devoted to their princedom and the country/Roshar as a whole. They come off as nonchalant and aloof, but that's (obviously) the persona they're trying to portray. (Though the nonchalantness is probably partially to fully true.) Every significant moment Seb has is ultimately helping Dalinar and showing a strong brain behind the facade, from the economic prowess to taking over the confused armies at the end of WoR. All of it was intentional, even if not outright stated. There could be something else there, but I hope he is what he seems, a highprince who actually sees the world (and himself) for what it is, and takes the steps he sees necessary to save his people/(generally) do the right thing.

  10. He's a good jumping off point to discuss the economy of the camps and Urithiru. He also acts as an interesting example of the importance of diversity in perspectives and personalities. Jasnah's notes and Dalinar's thoughts dismiss him as a fool because they are all business and super serious and as such view him as a fool. Shallan is more irreverent though and is able to discern that Seb is more clever than he lets on and is a very useful ally in his own way (economy+trade).

  11. Granted! The Nightwatcher proclaims that you are now a Skybreaker of the 3rd ideal, the surges of gravitation and division are yours to command. You meet your spren, a cute little rip in the air blinking stars at you and you decide to name him Twinkle. But before you can lash yourself up into the sky, the Nightwatcher informs you that your 3rd Ideal, the ideal of dedication, has been sworn for you. You are dedicated to following the will of Nalan, Herald of Justice, and treat his commandments as law. Just as the full significance of this begins to sink in, your external moral code pops up from inside a bush, chewing on what you think might have been a chicken, and his head rotates your direction as he says: I was almost done with this post when you 'd me @goody153. Granted. The Nightwatcher has given you a Pathian earing and Harmony hears your petition, and creates a special splinter of his dual powers just for you. It's a perfectly balanced mixture of preservation and ruin, you can summon this sentient bipartite projection of power at any time. Excited to try out your new powers, you summon your di-spren, and are shocked when a little cartoony angel appears on one shoulder and little cartoony devil appears on the other. The angelic and devilish spren immediately begin bickering about what course of action you should take, it seems that they are telepathic and feel that it is their duty to dispense advice on every single thought that goes through your mind. Frustrated at your inability to think with the constant dualistic arguements going on inside your head, you attempt to dismiss the spren, but you can only summon them whenever you want, not dismiss them whenever you want. Eventually, you are unable to do anything, frozen by the well articulated conflicting arguments against and for every thought that crosses your mind. But, you do glow, so you do get radiant powers. Crap, ninja'ed by @Winds Alight Granted, you always know what the right decision is in any given situation. Your bane is that you lack the moral fortitude to make the right decision, so you spend the rest of your life as an emotional wreck, devastated by your consistent inability to do the right thing. But the Nightwatcher feels bad for you, so you also get the power to shoot donuts out of your fingers. I wish that I was wealthy enough to afford a trip on the SpaceX flight slated for 2023 that is going to fly by the moon, and that I could take a large collection of items up with me to do experiments in zero gravity (like steamer trunk sized collection of things).

Why did she get sent to the pits when the lord ruler knew she was a misting. that was the whole point in hunting down the mistings was to use them to create spikes. is this just a huge plot hole? Thanks.

  28. I'm going to have to weigh in with the group here. Sebarial is far from a comic relief unnecessary character. Sebarial is shown to be pretty smart (he was the only one thinking long term with regards to the shattered plains for instance), and most important he thinks long term (see above). I am by no means an expert on the apocalypse, but someone with a long term vision seems like exactly the sort of guy you want around in one of those. However I will disagree with you sir on your point about him being on Dalinar's side as that is pretty much equivalent to being on humankind's side. Or rather the point I disagree with is that its the same as being on humankind's side. I think the whole point of the saga is to explore the fact that humankind's side isn't really the side of the good guys. Neither is the other side. There is no good side or bad side. There's the side against Odium, and the side for Odium.. And Dalinar's vision to unite them is about uniting all the different people's on Roshar against Odium after a fashion. And if you consider that as a goal, Sebarial seems again, just like the kind of person to have on your side. Because he's bright enough to see that the conflict won't end unless all parsh people are eradicated, or a more reasonable solution is found between everyone involved. His approach tends to be less militaristic and more let's talk it out (even if it is for pragmatic reasons and not the altruistic ones). Either way you slice it, seems like he's just the guy to have around... No? Of course having said that, odds are he's dying in the first half of the series, because he's too useful to keep around... So if you find him annoying, there's a fair chance he ain't gonna be around too long.

  31. Announcement Regarding my Retirement from the Alleyverse RP: This is the third variation of this post that I have written so far. Alas, I have not gotten any better at it. I was not sure where to post this. There was a chance that it would get buried in the Homeless PM if I put it there, so I decided putting it on my profile would be better. Besides, this really is a status update. I love the Alleyverse. The community has been kind to me. It has been both my pleasure and my honour to RP with all of you. However, it takes a lot of my time and energy to do everything that I do in the Alleyverse. I have come to realize that my lifestyle, the amount of time I spend reading, writing, and thinking about Alleyverse related stuff, is unsustainable. So, I have decided to retire. After Era Two ends, I will be severely limiting my involvement in the Alleyverse RP. As part of this, I will be stepping down from my position as RP leader, and forfeiting all titles and roles associated to my involvement in any Alleyverse guilds (namely TUBA). To make it easier on everyone, I have decided to do this process gradually. I am committed to helping the transition process into the next era go smoothly, so up until about a week after the era begins, I will maintain my regular presence in the Alleyverse, assisting with the compilation of the list, RPing with characters (of which I will have none in E3), and providing input and ideas on planning threads. Up until that point, it’s business as normal. It would be unfair of me to abandon you during what will surely be a busy time. But once everything is up and running, I will quietly slip out the back door. My biggest worry about following through with this plan was what would happen to the list. Thankfully, Ookla the Meeker (formerly known as Mraize) has volunteered to take on the job. In future, you can expect to see him responding to posts on the Character Thread. I am not leaving forever (so save your goodbyes!). In future, I intend to visit the Shard once a week, probably on weekends. You may still see me on the forums, participating in the longest thread or roast battles. Anything that I enjoy but does not require long-term commitment. To a limited extent, I will still participate in social PMs. TUBA’s rarely gets used for anything on-topic anyways. But once again, my presence will be sporadic. Alleyverse PMs I will likely mute and/or put on read. If you would like to contact me, the best way will be to DM me through discord. I have not decided how active I will be on there yet. Or, you could send me a PM and wait until the next time I am on. There is no need to make this into a big deal. But if anyone has any questions, requests, or comments, you are welcome to post them. I would be happy to clarify anything that I need to. Thank you for your time.

  32. All the theories along the lines of forgiving his own failure or saving who you can don't fit with the (alleged/likely) Windrunner's questioning of the fourth oath in the epigraph. "Am I not supposed to want to help people" implies being presented with a case where the choice that needs to be made is to voluntarily refrain from helping anyone. I suspect the fourth oath is something along the lines of "I will not let the situation in front of me distract from my sworn mission" When he starts to leave the parshmen, rather than reporting, he goes back to help get people to safety. no real consequences here. He almost goes to help the men on the wall when he first arrives in Kholinar. Adolin's intervention is likely all that stopped him. And if he had focused on the mission instead of allowing himself to be conflicted, he could have saved Elhokar. In Shademar, getting to Dalinar would likely have meant leaving Adolin behind. Seems to me that there was a lot of that kind of 'when do I help' theme in Oathbringer like Shallan's similar issue where 'helping' people caused them more harm than good.

He won by himself first, then won morally the second time, then won by his impact on others the third, defeating Amaram utterly. I don't see how you can see it as a loss at any level

  37. They'd have as much chance as the average military trying to take down a mid-sized Kaiju, which is more or less what we'd be talking about. A few fistfuls of coins scattered about would go a long way to giving them some amount of air superiority (by height if not maneuverability), and they'd be too small and numerous for a chasmfiend to get rid of. If shardbows can do damage then Coinshots would still have a chance, especially with flairing and/or if any Inquisitor had the Crasher combo. And who knows, if one has feruchemical Fortune and maybe they'd just "get Lucky". The tactic would be basically the same that shardbearers use: distract and take the legs out one at a time. Eventually it would be rendered martially inert and they could go in for the kill at leisure. The downside is that they'd need to deal substantially more damage to each leg than the single shard cut that shardbearers get away with. It's worth noting that per WOB Roshar has substantially more free Investiture in general than Scadrial, which is on the low end of the spectrum since so much of both Shards was tied up in the actual Creation of the planet and people. And given that the Chasmfiends are a part of the natural Investiture ecosystem of the place and have Gemhearts (which are crystallizing chemically flawless gems via a Spiritual Realm connection) they might count as Invested enough to resist some of the external Metallic Arts innately. On the other hand, if they are susceptible to a Soother they might be able to calm it enough to get close for a surprise attack. Or even direct control if having a gemheart is similar to spikes for the purposes of Control (which is a long shot, methinks). Truth is, even with far less powerful Metallic Arts, the Era2 Scadrians would have a much better chance by virtue of firearms and explosives.

  38. the inquisitor can fly and stay out of reach of the chasmfiend's claws. attack from its blind spots. however, the inquisitor needs a weapon that is actually capable of hacking through the chasmfiend's carapace. the oobsidian axes they usually have are no good, they would shatter agains the hard shell. so, the inquisitor wins, but needs a better weapon. also, time, because killing a beast that big requires a slow progression.

  42. Honestly I dont think you can actually store a Spren in Nicrosil. While we dont actually know what it is, I dont think Nicrosil an Investiture Battery (not any more than all metalminds, anyway). And while I do fully think you could Store the bond you get to the Honorblades, the fact that you cannot take the Nahel bond without using two spikes and spiking the Spren's native Cog-realm form, I really dont think it would work on the shardblades (certainly not living, likely not dead). The Plate is something else and was never sentient, so it might work. Spren are Investiture, but they still have Spiritwebs like physical beings so there are some qualitative differences between them and "commodity" Investiture like Stormlight, the metallic arts, or even Breaths. That being said they can be stored in Gems like stormlight, so maybe it could work... What I believe Nicrosil does is Store whatever the Connection you may have to a Shard, more or less by mimicking the relevant bits of Spiritweb, and thus Investuture functions that dont involve the Spiritweb wouldnt qualify. So it would give you the ability to use a Surge, which otherwise takes either your own Nahel Bond or a squire Connection a Radiant, but it would not let you store Stormlight in it. It would let you store a Connection to Endowment enough to use Breaths for Awakening, but you wouldnt be able to store Breaths themselves (at least not using the Feruchemy, you can always just store breaths in objects regardless). Random Thoughts: -Why would you need to store Plate or a Shardblade in the metalmind if they already can be summoned at will? Or are you talking about getting a Nicrosil Metalmind so Invested that it would become sentient like a spren or Seon? My understanding is that the relative power scale of Scadrial is significantly lower than the other shardworlds, to the point were I think that would take crazy, nigh ungodly amounts of investiture to accomplish. -Rosharan Spren are the only things that have any predisposition to a sword shape, and that is specifically because they were mimicking he Honorblades. Even Nightblood is explicitly an attempt to recreate the rosharan blades. -For what it's worth, I took the mention of talking metal in Era2 to be an Awakening cameo, though I believe we do have WOB that rosharan spren have been spotted off-world.

His inability to say the fourth ideal is progress. His inability to let go of his hero complex is progress. These things are events, and just because they didn't end satisfyingly doesn't mean it's just set-up. OB is only part of a series, but there are complete arcs within the books. Kaladin getting challenged and freezing instead of making decisive action is characterization. His character isn't being left behind or ignored or left incomplete; this is a complete arc within his broader story. Some of those things you mentioned, like his hero complex, have been unresolved since WoK. Sometimes people fail and they don't immediately get to fix it. Sometimes you just fail. He'll get back up and try again in the next one, but things ending without catharsis or redemption does not mean it's incomplete. Resolution of an arc doesn't mean everything has to fixed by the end. Sometimes the resolution is just accepting it as it is.

  47. The hardest thing to deal with in leadership, especially in life or death situations, is sussing out where your best success lies. You cant win every fight. A war leader has to actually send people to die. The D-day invasion was suicide for every single troop that stormed that beach. Only the lucky lived. A leader made the decision to send those people to their deaths for the greater cause. Look to that I as the 4th Windbreaker ideal. Not only letting people go who you can't protect, but being willing to sacrifice people for the greater good. Maybe he'll quote Spock: "The good of the many out way the good of the few...or the one."

  48. I love that not only has Wandersail applied really well to some individual story arcs—not only Szeth, but I would say Kaladin and Moash as well, especially Moash in OB—but that it applies on a larger scale. Really, Wandersail is a representation of how Odium's gets to people. He tells them to hand over responsibility for their mistakes and their acts of cruelty. They don't have to feel guilty or feel pain, because they can let Odium be responsible. And that's how he lures them into even worse cruelty. I think we will probably see some more applications of The Girl Who Looked Up as well. I'm not sure I agree with this. I was surprised at how frequently all of the other main characters still referred to Kaladin as just the "bridgemen," not Kaladin or Kal, or even Captain or Windrunner, but bridgemen. I wondered if Brandon was intentionally making it clear that despite everything Kaladin has done, he's still an outsider to the whole Kholin-radiant group. Though I did appreciate the perspectives of Kaladin from Bridge Four. I thought it was amusing that they don't hero worship Kal quite as much as Kaladin thinks they do, but that they do still respect him a great deal.
