  2. Callor walked into Lord Agelmar’s reception chamber, the door closing behind the Borderland lord with a thud that had the note of finality in it. Walking towards the chair on which the leader of Fal Dara sat, he bowed his head, then straightened. Though his only loyalty was to his Lord Captain Commander, Callor had to respect the man in front of him, and he deserved at least the bow Callor granted him. While Callor had seen his share of battles, fighting in the Children’s conquests in Altara and Murandy, he hadn’t been molded by the constant war that surrounded the men here. Around the Blight, everyone was simply...tougher. The weak died before their time, leaving only the sturdiest of men to defend their homes from the cursed Shadow. And Agelmar was clearly among the sturdiest, with a calloused grip that spoke of a career with the sword, and a scar on his left cheek saying the same. “Lord Agelmar,” Callor nodded again to him, then to the servants. “I have been sent with a message from the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light, Pedron Niall, may the Grace and Favour of the Light shine forever on his reign. ‘Thus saith the Lord, the Lord Captain Commander of hosts: Yet once a little while, and I will shake the heavens and earth, the seas and the dry land. Behold, the Lords whom ye seek shall suddenly be come into the Borderlands, and the messenger of the Whitecloaks in whom ye delight shall be revealed in the day of his coming, saith the Lord Captain Commander of hosts. All the nations like sheep have gone astray, and I shall gather them back into my fold, beginning with your cooperation, Agelmar.’” Callor winced. The Lord Captain Commander was not a man to put on pretenses. Was the message he got compromised? He quickly squished the thought. He would obey orders. He, in fact, had to, which included bracing himself for Agelmar’s response. The Lord of Fal Dara stood slowly. Drawing himself to his full height, which was slightly less than Callor’s, he began pacing towards him. Callor was unsettled by the man’s steady strides, but he could not back away without losing face, and he said nothing as Agelmar drew up next to him. Then, faster than Callor’s eye could track, one second Niall’s message was in his hand, the next it was in many shreads, tattered and scattered across the floor. “Out!” Agelmar roared. “Out, and take your precious Commander’s words with you! They stain my floorboards.” He gave a hefty kick to the pile of torn paper, sending it fluttering and scattering in the air. Callor felt fury gnaw at him. Someone dareddisrespect the Children so callously? He pivoted as if to go, leaving the paper shards scattered on the floor, then halted in the middle of his turn, voice filled with thick wrath. “The Commander’s words will stay here, my Lord. And you will choke on them.” With that, he strode out, careful not to be perceived as walking too quickly. He must, after all, project the Children’s strength. The doors to his chamber closed, and Agelmar let out a long-building sigh. First Moiraine Sedai, a welcome guest if a remarkably self-assured one, and then the Whitecloak, with a message straight from that pontificating fool Niall. It had been all Agelmar could do to avoid disaster in both the meetings. Negotiations with the Aes Sedai has been particularly difficult, with Moiraine making things very clear that she had an agenda she intended to see to completion, not even telling Agelmar what beyond saying that it led to the Eye. He had managed to convince Moiraine to accept the escort of soldiers he offered as she approached the Eye, but the Whitecloak was an unresolved issue, even without the dire message he carried. Then Agelmar’s eyes lit up. The escort. Of course. “Aliath,” he snapped to his scribe, who jerked his head up. “Dictate an order for the Whitecloak Emorle Callor to be sent with the escort to the Eye.” It was perfect. Two birds with one stone, as Moiraine would have to be wary around a Child of the Light, and the Whitecloak would likely be dead after a few days in the Aes Sedai’s “care.” Either way, both problems were minimised for now. Agelmar turned back to his desk, studying the map of the Blight. It was time to turn his mind to the most important matter. The eternal matter. Defence against the Shadow. Day 1 has (finally) begun! It will end in 22 hours’ time at 22:00 EST, December the seventh. The Eye has 38 health remaining. The current layer of defence has 1 health remaining, and is the Outermost Ring. The Blight is currently attacking for 2. A Creeper of the Blight appeared. It will Send Runner on N2 unless stopped. Please remember that PMs are closed. There is a lynch today. Player List: 1. 4. I think the questioner was just trying to be clever. Any simple answer from Brandon could have been construed as 'spoilers.' Yes - omg Kaladin dies in book 5. No - omg Kaladin dies in book 5. RAFO - omg Kaladin might die in book 5.

  5. Considering the traits of Bondsmiths are pious and Guiding, nah I think it fits Bondsmiths pretty well. You can't give people advice, at least in most circumstances, without having been through some crem yourself and expect to be be taken seriously. And you can't crawl through crem without having opportunities to accept your situation, or fall, or just give up. Dalinar's past, and accepting it, are as important to his role as who he is now. As to "Unity"

  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last cosmere story before Space-Mistborn (the grand finale) will be Dragonsteel, the origin story. And that's not an accident. We can't yet grasp how the cosmere story ends because we still don't understand how it begins. We know that Adonalsium was shattered, but we still don't know how, or why, or even what Adonalsium really was. I'm not saying it's pointless to theorize, but I don't think you can build a good theory on just the evidence in the books so far. You have to imagine the evidence that doesn't exist yet, and extrapolate from there. You must predict both the beginning and the end.

  7. A tall, mysterious stranger appeared suddenly in the midst of the citadel, brandishing an illogical number of forks which he immediately began stabbing into the shins of anyone who wasn't a soldier, ensuring that each stab was nonlethal. "I found a loophole! Apparently this isn't illegal!" The man began giggling madly and continued running around the citadel stabbing shins.

  8. All the ideals are going to be very personal interpretations of the same general Ideal, but subtleties are going to be added or removed in the translation. Dalinar's is making a personal statement about bearing Responsibility for both Past and Future, Both the Journey AND the Destination. For comparison, look at the differences in Kaladin vs Teft's Third Ideal: Teft's relates to a much more personal issue, one that will most likely not apply to most Windrunners. "I Am UNITY" is something else, definitely not an Ideal. Best guess (that I dont know if it has been confirmed in WOB yet?) is that Dalinar temporarily Ascended and took up some amount of the Honor shard, but where Tanavast interpreted the Intent behind "Honor" as a matter of Oaths and Bonds between individuals, Dalinar is taking a broader society view of it, turning the more personal Honor idea to a more Community-oriented one.

  14. And this is precisely why it's so hard to come up with theories on the endgame of the Cosmere. We know the Vessels had different reasons for wanting to Shatter Adonalsium (so we can't really generalize) but we know at least some of them saw it as the only good option available. Good for what, we don't know. The Vessels made some sort of promise to one another which Frost appears to have been part of but Hoid was (probably) not. What did they promise each other, when did they do it and why did they do it in the first place? We can conjure up any number of hypothetical reasons for why the Shattering had to happen but until we get answers to all of these questions we're largely stumbling around in the dark. For example, let's imagine that the Vessels who saw the Shattering as a regrettable necessity did it because Adonalsium represented some sort of danger that had to be gotten rid of. If Adonalsium itself was the threat for some reason like 'It simply had far more power than even an infinite mind should be trusted with' then trying to reassemble it in a single Vessel (whose minds are not infinite, just greatly expanded) would probably not be a good idea. Likewise if it was doing something the Vessels thought had to be stopped (like if they feared the spread of fainlife and worried that Adonalsium was going to bring it to all the other worlds and displace everything already there) they wouldn't want that power concentrated in one place again, because who's to say that the next person to hold all that power wouldn't be equally dangerous? Or perhaps Adonalsium was protecting the Cosmere from something (whether by intent or by the simple fact of its existence) but the mind controlling all that power was beginning to wear down and wasn't going to be able to keep it up, at which point the Vessels split Adonalsium to distribute the burden while keeping the power in large enough chunks to do whatever it needed. In that case, you'd also have reasons to not want to reassemble it in a single entity again. These are just random ideas but you get the picture, we can't simply assume that recreating Adonalsium is logical or desirable.

  15. I'm personally not too sure about using a points system. While it does work as something of a guideline it is still too easy to develop characters that are way too strong, even if your points total is good. To fix this we'd need a lot of special rules and exceptions for specific combinations, and even then someone could probably manage to create a game breaker combination. There's also the fact that we'd probably need to update the list whenever a new book comes out, especially since we don't have a lot of concrete information on the possibilities of a lot of magic systems.

  16. You're absolutely entitled to your own feelings. But coming into a thread where people have been working for over a year, trying to tease out the intricacies of Brandon's magic system, just to tell them "It's magic; don't worry about it" seems super unnecessary. By all means, start a new thread about how people spend too much time digging into the mechanics of the Cosmere, but don't derail this one.

  17. Hello everyone! For my own curiosity I’m going to count the number of unique to non-unique roles. Village 1 – Rand al’Thor 2 – Mat Cauthon 3 – Perin Aybara 4 – al’Lan Mandragoran 5 – Moiraine Sedai 6 – Loial 7 – Green Man Elim 8 – Aginor 9 – Balthamel 10 – Padan Fain That leaves us with 10 non-unique roles, which is interesting because it’s exactly half of our players despite that number not being planned. I wonder if balance has been tweaked because of that. @Furamirionind I’m inclined to agree about the number of Elims, because 5 seems like a nice number for the roles and players. I also think that there probably aren't any secret roles because that would just be too many roles. Unless we're all somehow ta'veren in which case we might as well roll some dice to see how this game is going to end . But that does make me wonder if being ta'veren has any bearing on the rules, and if there are secret rules to Rand, Mat, and Perrin. It’s not stated in the rules are that a player couldn’t, for example, be Rand al’Thor, a Fal Dara Warrior, an Emond’s Fielder, and be in Moiraine’s Circle. I’m curious about whether the number of roles for a given player was limited for balance reasons, because even though it's implied that my example is possible (Moiraine could be a part of her own circle), potentially giving someone that many docs and powers seems unbalanced and is a lot to expect of a single player. Also, @Ookla the Heretical, why are you wearing my face ? My profile pic coloured purple, yes, but my profile pic nonetheless. It made me pause and chuckle when I saw it for the first time. Rollover is 4pm for me so I'll almost always be on for it. But as always with SE, I'll probably be asleep when most people are posting. I'll make big response posts and try and keep up. Good luck and have fun! Antor Vadenfort slid the whetstone down the blade of his sword again and sighted his eye down the length of the weapon. The light that caught the shimmering edge told him that the sword could have been used to trim a lord's nose hairs, as an old friend used to tell him. A sad smile touched Antor's lips. He stepped over to the shivering Jancey and crouched down beside him, the shimmering cloak around the Warder’s shoulders pooling on the ground. “Tell me, boy,” he said in a quiet voice that was muffled through the thick beard on his face, “have you ever had anything to fight for?” The Warder was not tall in stature, but he had a weight to his presence that would have many turning their heads to listen. There was a worldliness to him that spoke more than age, although those greying hairs yet lean frame did not give any hint as to his years.

  20. Flanked by two of Agelmar’s soldiers, Callor trudged over the rocky ground, setting a brisk walk to keep up with the horses. The party was moving northeast, towards the Spine of the World, and the Light alone knew what lay behind their lofty peaks. Or within them. From what the witch in charge of the expedition had told them, she intended to march into the Blight and into the mountains! And yet how many still refused to believe that Tar Valon was in league with the Shadow? More likely, this “Moiraine Sedai,” as he was forced to address her, would drag the lot of them to the pits of Shayol Ghul as soon as lift a finger. Her Gaidin scanned ahead, as if watching for threats, but Callor sneered at his back. Threats! Ever since entering the fringes of this Light-forsaken land, the evil plants and creatures which the Warder has instructed him to stay away from, as if lecturing a small child, all but parted for the Tar Valon witch. The sorceress claimed it was the protection of the Light. Callor snorted. The day the Light protected an Aes Sedai was the day he threw down his sunbeam cloak and renounced Niall’s authority. And that would never happen. Such were Callor’s thoughts as he strode briskly beside the Fal Daran escort. He should have been sweating, as spring was well-advanced, yet the world seemed locked in winter. Undoubtedly more of the witches’ meddling, or the Darkfriends. Though what was the difference? He kept his eyes on the road in front of him, determined not to trip in front of all the men. And saw an odd creeper approaching. Skirting the witch, as he had known it would, the Creeper took a winding path around her. A path, Callor realised with a start, that was headed directly for him. If the tales about it were true, a touch could kill. Yet he was too slow; the plant was locked in on its target. He drew his sword in a flash of steel, prepared to cut it down in a last act of defiance. As he raised the thin blade, an even thinner trailer of fire shot out of seemingly nowhere, cooking the Creeper to a crisp. He looked accusingly at Moiraine, beginning a protest that he was about to handle the threat himself, thank you very much. It died on his lips. The witch looked deeply disconcerted. Even from a distance, he could see her eyes, which darted between the ragtag villagers, an accusing glance for each. Callor felt a small satisfaction from that. If one of the witches was unsure as to what happened, it must have been a blow on behalf of the Light. Resuming his walk at a jaunty stroll, Callor hummed to himself, confident that even in the awful situation he had been placed in, the Light would prevail. Exepins had hardly been a warrior in his past. A new recruit to the Borderland army, yet easily surpassing 40 years, he put his given history as a scribe to good usage for Lord Agelmar. Taxes, legal documents, decrees to announce, all had gone through him, somehow. Now stuck with Moiraine Sedai as the company’s leader, Exepins had no choice but to continue his work. He found it peaceful, a more sedate job in a camp often filled with rush and noise. However, the quiet job began attracting rumours regarding his motives towards the others. Determined to execute their own justice, three men came to him, determined to find answers. “You, scribe,” one said, hands on hips. “We didn’t see much of you at the barricades against the Blight, where we were talking about how to end this situation,” a second chimed in. The third was the boldest, and surprised Exepins. They denounced him as a Darkfriend, without a scrap of evidence, and little consistency at all. “We have decided that your punishment for being a Darkfriend is death,” he finished, rolling up the “list of charges.” Exepins’ head spun, and his head could hardly register the words the man was saying. However, his brief combat instincts kicked in. As the first man swung a heavy club in his direction, he ducked, letting it whoosh harmlessly over his head. The second club connected, unfortunately, bringing numbness, then blinding pain in the back of his head. From the crunching sound his head had made, his skull was likely cracked. It would be too late, all over…he slumped against the sickly rock wall, laying down. The commotion summoned an irate Moiraine Sedai, fury etched into every line of her face. She stepped over Exepins to face the three men. Exepins squinted. In a corner of his brain, he could see and hear the three being berated, Moiraine’s ice-cold anger chilly enough to cleave through metal. However, the majority of his head simply ached. His vision was dimmer...Moiraine turned to him, kneeling and handling his head. A flash of cold washed through him from the Healing, then shivers. By the time those had abated, Exepins was already asleep. Asleep, but alive. Night 1 has begun! It will end in 22 hours’ time at 22:00 EST, December the eighth. 21. So in my English class, we just finished reading Othello, and a comment made by another student gave me an interesting idea. We were talking about Emilia's death, were she says We were talking about how not only do characters often give little speeches as they die, they also often end with something akin to "I die". I had recently looked at a post analysing the chapter one epigraph of The Way of Kings, and so I immediately thought of it. After doing some searching, I found two other death rattles that end in similar ways. After searching for more last words of Shakespeare characters I found these. It's not perfect obviously, but I find it interesting that a device Shakespeare used for convenience is now an actual plot point in Stormlight Archive.

  24. Since no one has really added an discussion since my last post. RP time! Also before I forget, I know someone else said it already but whoever Rand is, it's probably worth using your action to take out the Creeper this turn, as we don't have a whole ton of information to go off of as far as who to vote for or anything else. ---------------- Brendan walked up to the Eastern Gate of Fal Dara. He had spent the previous night at the home of a farmer outside the city, as he had arrived too late in the night to gain entry through the gates. While rightly suspicious of a man wandering around in such a dangerous place so late at night, he had consented to allow Brendan to sleep in his barn. I've had worse nights. At least it was warm next to the pigs. Hopefully the guards would recognize him as a Gleeman, and let him enter the city. They tended to be wary of anyone they didn't know, but many soldiers enjoyed the entertainment his kind provided. Approaching the gate, a guard called out. "Ho there! What is your business here stranger?" Brendan noticed a couple of the guards readying crossbows, but the one speaking seemed inclined to be at least somewhat welcoming. "My name is Brendan Vallerune. I am a master of the arts of entertainment! And all around man of mystery." was the reply. The guard looked closer. "We don't need much for mystery here. We like what we know. But it has been a while since we've had any fun. Gleemen are always welcome, provided you can prove yourself. If you can get any of us to smile we'll let you in." Brendan looked the men over. All had stern expressions. Making any of them break would be a challenge. Time to warm up. Brendan pulled out some colorful balls, and began juggling. The man watched this with about as much enthusiasm as a horse feeling the bridle being strapped on. Knowing he needed to step it up, Brendan tossed two of the balls to the ground, then added a couple knives to the mix. He managed to easily juggle the assortment of both harmless and dangerous objects. The guards seemed to be paying more attention, but not even a hint of mirth appeared. He began reciting jokes as he juggled. "What do you get when you cross an Aes Sedai with a chicken? A lesson in why you never cross an Aes Sedia, and a chicken dinner! Why did the Ogier cross the road? To get to his Stedding on the other side! Why are Trollocs so ugly? Because my father's side of the family decided to procreate!" He continued in this manner, and eventually he could see some of the guards beginning to enjoy themselves. Time for the grand finale. Throwing everything he was juggling into the air, he tossed a burst of smoke at the ground and vanished. The guards immediately grew concerned, thinking hew may have been a distraction. But they didn't see anyone else still. As the smoke cleared it revealed a very impolite phrase written by the objects that had landed on the ground, and Brendan stepped out from behind a nearby bush and bowed. Seeing this made the guards chuckle, and as per their arrangement, they consented to let Brendan into the city. He picked up his things, then headed inside. What would he find within, and what secrets did this city hold for him?

  25. Here’s an idea: there are two ‘versions’ of guilds. One is the ones that the Avatars are in - these are the OOC PMs and threads, and the way we count ‘official guilds’. An avatar can be in up to three official guilds (four at a stretch). The characters that are linked to avatars can be in the guilds that their avatars are in; if a character wants to join a guild, that avatar has to join as well. But, a character does not have to be in every guild that the avatar is in; an avatar can be a member of the Sentinels and still have characters that aren’t. In that way, avatars could also be considered ‘leaders’ of their guilds, without having their characters need to be in charge. Of course, that would require someone to track avatar’s affiliations outside of their characters. That wouldn’t necessarily take a lot of work, though; just designate someone Official Spreadsheet Coordinator and have everyone announce/fill it in. That does mean opportunities to have secret members would be limited, but I’d think that the amount of story mileage to be gained there is questionable. What this means is that avatars can create plans for the future of the guilds without restricting their characters to a leadership role. An avatar can be the leader of a guild (and perhaps control the character that is the in-RP leader) but still have lower-ranking characters. Laurelai is an excellent example.

  26. We do indeed have an incredibly complicated ranking system. In fact, it’s so complicated that no body understands it except for the head of the ranking department. Unfortunately he disappeared a few years ago when an accidental black hole was formed inside of a cookie he was eating, so as of now we are kind of lost.

  30. I think Navani will bond the Sibling and Rlain will bond NIghtwatcher to become the other two bondsmiths, but I don't think they'll both happen in Book 4. I think one will, and the other will be book 5, but I can't guess which. Adolin will revive Maya to become an Edgedancer. I like the idea of Rysn becoming a Willshaper. I think there will be at least two dozen 'random' radiants popping up and I think we'll see quite a few people get their armor.

  31. I disagree with this on a more meta level than most. I think that doing that would be too similar to how The Wheel of Time works, and I think that Brandon will stay far away from anything resembling WoT, if only for the likely perception that he's being derivative.

  34. I think there's a bit of a problem at the moment where too many people are aiming for a big surprise moment or a sudden reveal. The issue is that we don't just have one storyteller, and if we have 20 different people each making their own huge surprise revelation, it kind of devalues all of them because no one is really surprised any more and there's barely time to react before the next big reveal happens. I think we can trust each other to separate player knowledge from character knowledge which helps with one of the reasons people want to keep plans a secret (to avoid obstruction from other people). The other reason would be that you want to surprise the players for a narrative purpose (To heighten the enjoyment of readers) but I think we may have to accept that having too many of these secrets actually results in the opposite, it makes things really confusing for readers, a bunch of sudden plot changes coming out of nowhere can be disorienting and not lead to the best or most coherent story.

  35. For me this WoB says that Mourn's Vault is an unpleasant area. It's a settlement on the border of Alethkar and Herdaz - we know this area has experienced heavy fighting. Thus, it might have been a good idea for Tarah to flee from this "not a pleasant place" to a more secure place (like Urithiru?). My question would be: How did she get there? Did she went to the warcamps on the shattered plains and then oathgated from Narak to Urithiru?

  36. When... Your brother tells you he is reading Wings of Fire, and you immediately think of @Ookla the Real Voidus. Your brother says, “I’m going to break you.” And you almost say, “No, I don’t want to be broken,” but realize what that would mean and decide you don’t want to say that. Someone is talking about podcasts and you tell them the only podcasts you like are Writing Excuses and Shardcast.

  38. Disclaimer: I did not make this. I take no credit. My cousin showed it to me and I saw it wasn't on the Shard, so I posted it.

Apparently, this is what you do to the greatest works of art: This is based on a conversation that came up on Discord: And now for a Tenth Heightening Warbreaker Breath joke in the form of a surreal dank meme:

  41. I don't know if it's confirmed yet, but in chapter 44 we have the probable Tarah sighting in Urithiru. It's the scene where Ishnah is teaching Veil's men espionage, and Veil is talking about the Alethi woman wearing the Thaylen dress with a brightly coloured blouse, who keeps looking over her shoulder like she's looking for someone. In chapter 112, Kaladin thinks about how she preferred old-fashioned Thaylen dresses, often paired with bright colored shirts.

  42. The analogy of the cosmere being a closed system though, would be like saying that the milky way is a closed system. That's not the case.

  45. When you read the name Shen in the book Eon and wonder why they didn't call him Rlain. Still undercover? When you see this Pokemon card and buy it just for the inside joke. I was laughing my head off - absolutely worth the fifty cents.

  46. Yeah I have this soap opera quasi messianic idea stuck in my head that Vo was the first Returned because he was Endowment's godly son, was killed and in desperation she used her power to restore his life not realizing (or being bound in nature) that he would die after a week without someone else's sacrifice of Breath. And that since then in some desire to honor his memory and such she does the same thing to others to let them do great acts. That is definitely not a theory though, just a fun and slightly ridiculous backstory.
