  2. In the WoK, Hoid tells the story of a group of people who committed horrible things under the orders of a king only to discover that that king had been dead for years, and that they were responsible for their horrible actions. The dead king is discovered in the passage below: “Derethil and his men came out of the tower a short time later, carrying a desiccated corpse in fine robes and jewelry. ‘This is your emperor?’ Derethil demanded. ‘We found him in the top room, alone.’ It appeared that the man had been dead for years, but nobody had dared enter his tower. They were too frightened of him." In the final chapter Dalinar finally realizes that the Almighty hadn't been talking in response to him, that he hadn't been following orders but had been misinterpreting the visions. He then learns that the Almighty is dead. The title of this final chapter? In the Top Room.

  3. I don't have my Cosmere star chart handy, but maybe we should be giving it a closer look? Edit: Found a link to the image; Hmm, The "Dragon" in the Scar constellation could be what is depicted if you looked at it straight on. It doesn't seem to match up with any of the constellations which is what I was originally thinking.

  4. But if Twi is already corrupted.... That would mean that a not corrupted Twi would just be so enormously pure that the universe would explode into love and rainbows. Good thing she's corrupted.

  7. Another man fell out of the sky. He was Finnish and was wearing an infinite number of hat. Really only two. The Finnchemist stepped up next to the Swedeomancer. "But can you defeat us" Drums began to play, and a flying Nordic longboat came sailing out of the mist. An army of Swedeomancers, Finnchemists, and Nordbinders were all on board. Someone blew a horn. The hunt was on.

  8. Nale revives Szeth-son-Neturo using a fabrial, likely one similar to the one used by the Radiant in Dalinar's vision (the one with the inky black things in WoK, where he defends his 'wife' and 'child' with a fire poker; not at home, and I've forgotten the name of chapter). iirc, there's a WoB where Sanderson confirms this. The timing of the use of the fabrial was purposeful, and close to not being successful. Basically, Szeth died but his spirit hadn't yet left his body when Nale healed it. Edgedancer novella spoiler There is no evidence to suggest that bonding with a dead Shardblade allows someone to use Stormlight at all, for healing or otherwhise. An Honorblade, such as Szeth wielded, does allow the use of Stormlight, though. He uses it to heal from a multitude of otherwise-deadly wounds even in the first prologue of WoK, after all. What Szeth says about this is that he can't heal from damage done by Shardblades. It's possible that he was wrong, or that Honorblades don't allow full healing, because Kaladin definitely heals from such a wound in his first duel against Szeth. Edit: I'm really good at putting spoilers inside of spoilers inside of spoilers when I really didn't mean to.

  10. So I finally got my copy of Skyward from the US today, and as per, I will always ask Brandon for some information about a shard we haven't seen yet, and he gave me the following info this year... I have two possible ideas with this, feel free to pick at them though! 1) Brandon is referencing Bavadin, and possibly suggesting that there are six separate entities or aspects to Autonomy 2) It's the eyes, nostrils and front fangs of a Dragon SPECULATE!

  12. Mace stepped forward. "Sir, Mace please job I want?" GAAAAAAAAH, he screamed internally. What are you doing?! "You nice work fairy chemist!" He continued, stretching out his arm for the woman to shake, but he accidentally knocked over a small table. It crashed to the ground. "I'll just go..." Mace muttered, embarrassed. He awkwardly tried to pick up the table, but it snapped in his fingers. Then he was struck by a sudden realization. "Wait, are you are not new boss?" YESSSS. SECOND CHANCE, YOU FOOL. As his brain did backflips, he swept the remains into the corner and tried to act casual. He gave the woman a nod, and a look that he hoped meant 'I am confident and competent and if this is a competitive hiring process, you won't last three seconds'.

  14. Riathor soared up, the island shrinking as he gained height. His companions shrunk into ants. What was he doing? Shouldn't he stay with them? No... Something was calling him. A very familiar voice. Coming from much farther inland. He could hear it. Feel it. Taste it. SEE it. It came, a lilting voice. Calling for help. Calling... for him. Riathor. He who had a spren. He who had lost it. He who would regain it. Riathor cried out, finding a metal source on the boat and shooting forward towards the island. She was waiting for him- He saw a figure on the beach. One who was sleeping. One who bled. The voice died out as Riathor fell, flaring Pewter as he hit the ground. He knelt next to the fallen figure. He turned away. "Help!" He cried out. @Archer @Sorana

  15. Hi, welcome! I empathize with the hunger for more Stormlight, but we are all going to have to wait a little bit for it Brandon should be starting on it in January and hopes to get it out in our greedy hands about 18 months later - but Stormlight are not easy books, so it may end up being a little longer. Fortunately there is a hefty archive of Words of Brandon we've compiled over at Arcanum, so you've got some lighter reading material to carry you over for a bit. Plus, Brandon's other works are not bad either, so you can dabble in those a bit. Skyward, which released a little over a week ago is not half bad, for instance. Worst case scenario, you can always hang out with us, either here on the forums, or in our Discord server. We are not Brandon, but we can be a distraction

  16. Aw, thanks. Though I think there might be some sort of Epic power involved because…. *looks at number of upvotes* Yeah, still not sure how this happened.

  17. Confirmed Epic abilities: Twi - The power to get all of the upvotes. Literally all of them. (It could be argued that her actual Epic power is being awesome and writing amazing characters and that this is merely a side effect) Edge - The power to garner universal hatred of a character and yet not have anyone actively attempt to kill him in any serious manner. Somehow. Winter - The ability to instantly find the story with the most amount of 'nope's. It's possible that this is Red's ability and not Winter's given that Kokichi's story has so far involved no slavery to sadistic Epics. Voidus: The power to turn literally anything into an Epic profile. Also the power to never think of a good name for Epics. TYP: The ability to confuse Voidus because my post count doesn't match everyone else's so TYP is frequently not the person who starts a new page for me.

  19. Meanwhile, in a dark (alley) laboratory’s cellar, a locked filing cabinet sat quietly, staring across the room at where the stairs used to be. A sign hung on it, warning people to ‘Beware of the ╔╦╦═╬╦═’. Inside of the cabinet was a single piece of paper that Will Be Explained Later. Outside of a door, one that may or may not be relevant to the plot, an old man paced nervously.

  22. I just noticed a juicy detail on a reread, and I have to post it. Not finding a proper thread, I made one So, I started rereading aloy of law. In the prologue, vax and lassie are talking during a pause in the fight. Vax remarks that lassie shot a toe out of a bandit, so he had a good reason to hold a grudge. Lassie replies “You don’t need ten,” she said. Knowing now that she is a kandra, I realized that the four toes are horse's hooves, because a felllow kandra of her is impersonating a horse, and she does just fine, because the horse is fine with 4. Of course she looks kind of ridiculous, because she's a horse. And this is probably a reference to the short scene brandon wrote with horse!Melaan Post your own hidden gems. Or, if there is already a thread for it, point me there

  23. Zaphoid Beeblerock, after many years of travel, had finally arrived to the place he would come to call home. A small, dirty shack in the middle of Alleycity. There was mold on the walls, the floor was wet and Zaphoid thought he saw an insect crawling into a crack in the wall. Home sweet home. The salesman who had sold him the house had assured that there was a basement for extra space, but Zaphoid couldn't find the entrance to it. The previous owner had probably hidden it for some reason. With a sigh, Zaphoid started burning steel. Steel lines were pointing in every directions. Zaphoid ignored all of them, except for one that was pointing in the floor. He followed it and found a trapdoor that was sealed with a thick padlock hidden in the floor. Zaphoid sighed again, and flared his steel. 6 more steel lines sprouted from the one pointing towards the padlock, and he pushed on the line he knew was the right one. The lock's innards clicked, and Zaphoid pulled open the trapdoor, finding a ladder. He extinguished his steel and followed the ladder downwards. At the bottom, he found a large room in a much better shape that the shack upstairs, with walls out of concrete and Aon-powered ligt strips in the ceiling. A large worktable stood against the wall, furnished with a stock of drawing utensils and rulers. This room was why Zaphoid had spent all the money he had made for the past 2 years to buy the house. Zaphoid grinned. Home sweet home.

  24. "Tena?" Mace exclaimed. "Excuse my excursive thoughts. I'll extend an exhaustive explanation later," he said, expressively exhibiting exceptional exuberance. Since their last extracurricular excursion, the desire to experiment with an expropriated item of hers had excited him, but that was extraneous. Since stealing tends to exacerbate situations, Mace exaggeratedly smiled and exculpated his conscience of the experience, externalizing no signs of extreme or extraditable behaviour. Expelling his exuberance, he expertly expanded his attention to the newcomer's entrance. As Tena expounded her theory, Mace extracted himself from the conversation to explore and exam the extra room, expecting to expose the boss therein. "Yooo hooo!" he called extravagantly.

  31. @Overlord Jebus and @ChaosI finished Skyward a couple days ago and while I was happy with the ending I did share some of these feelings. But then I read DE and now take all of those feelings back. There's huge backstory there and mentally filling in the gaps between DE and Skyward that would have resulting in a planet like Detrius is fascinating. At this point, I wouldn't be at all disappointed to never see that expansion/war period spelled out explicitly -- although getting those stories would be a nice bonus.

  40. Quoting from tWok: I'm probably in the minority here but I miss the philosophy debates from tWoK. I'm sure we could have a fine time debating Shallan's actions... (though all the main characters have done morally questionable things) I think the biggest problem with these more utilitarian philosophies in the Stormlight Archive is that they're very dangerous when combined with Odium's ability to corrupt people. Once you have people giving themselves the right to commit evil in the name of the "greater good" then I fear it becomes very easy to corrupt them.

  41. The Ghostbloods don't seem like a nice bunch. Hunt or be hunted (kill or be killed). I don't know if that sums up their philosophy in general but it seems plausible. None of them seem "nice" or "good". They seem quite casual about killing. Maybe to them, the whole Cosmere is a hunting ground? For fun, for trophies, for wealth, for power, or who knows what.

  42. This is Brandon's story; if he feels the need to change it, or thinks something needs tinkering to line up better with future events, then he's free to do so. He mentioned the Hobbit, but (unlike Tolkien), Brandon doesn't have a "convenient" place in Stormlight to reveal that the events we saw were wrong, so going back and re-correcting and republishing the book to amend that is the only way he could do it. I guess there is a little bit of a concern that this could become a "thing" with future releases, but (as has been mentioned in this thread by someone who I cna't remember), this is the first time Brandon has made such a change in all of the books he's done. If it does become "a thing", and he starts changing endings of multiple books... Well, at that point it becomes problematic. But not really before, though I do totally understand people's concerns about it. I'm on this site- obviously- so I don't feel any need to rush out and buy replacement copies or anything... but I can understand how it might bug people. ...On the other hand... I'm not very fond of the changed ending. I've said elsewhere that sometimes Kaladin can really rub the wrong way as a character. His killing Szeth was something I was fine with, because... well, it was an action that made sense to me. I didn't expect him to be grappling in future books with the fact he killed a man; he was a soldier in Amaram's army. He knows what it is to fight and kill people. Having his big on-panel killing retcon'd out though... hat bothers me. In some ways, I find Kaladin a bit too... perfect. Which I realize is a strange comment to make, considering he's bad-tempered and somewhat racist. I need to get around to making a Kaladin post/commentary, but my point is that... As with Amaram being revealed to, in fact. be evil, Kaladin now hasn't killed a main character. It's still early in the Archive, true, but I want Kaladin to be wrong at some point. As is, I kind of get the feeling that Brandon wants everything he does to be the "right" decision, which I find kind of annoying. EDIT For the record, I'm not commenting, either way, or whether or not Kaladin killing Szeth was good, evil, in keeping with the windruners, or whatever. But, given his background as a soldier, we can assume he's killed people who were trying to kill his people- we even saw that with Heleran. The idea that he would kill Szeth (because Szeth is a threat to "his" people, like Dalinar) isn't particularly far-fetched to me.

  43. I find myself really struggling with this. It's not so much WHAT has changed, more that it has changed at all. It's really upsetting to me because I'm suddenly looking at my copy of Words of Radiance differently. This isn't a simple copy edit, the actual content is different. In my version Kaladin kills Szeth, which is now canonically wrong. If I want a 'correct' version, then I will need to purchase another hardback, which isn't exactly cheap. It's also upsetting to me because I no longer have any faith in future releases. If Words of Radiance needed to be changed - if the initial version of Words of Radiance was really so wrong that it needed to be fixed - then what about the initial versions of future releases? Can I safely buy book 3, or should I wait for a year to see if a 'correct' version comes out? I've never even had to ask myself that question regarding books. I'm aware how harsh 'wrong' sounds for what is ultimately a few changed sentences, but I really can't think of a better way to put it. Clearly Sanderson felt those sentences were important enough to be changed, else he wouldn't have changed them. If the sentences are that important to him, then they are important to me. However my copy of Words of Radiance does not have those important changes. My copy of Words of Radiance is wrong. I'm really struggling with this, to the point where I made this account because I need to discuss it with other people. For me it's enough to question if I should continue purchasing these books. I love this series. I don't want to quit reading it. Yet if what Sanderson releases to us is so wrong that he feels the need to change it, I find it hard to faithfully purchase his novels. I apologize for such a negative post, but I needed to get this off my chest.
