  4. Morning Edition 5 The Elendel Daily Newsworthy Content for Every Octant! The 27th of Doxil, 68, Morning Price 2 Clips Governor Announces Water Cleanliness Policies This morning, the Elendel Fish Market was closed down for health and safety reasons, after it was discovered that the fish had ingested copious amounts of soot and dirt, and were declared unfit for human consumption. Not only this, but on the coast, fishers and other early-morning workers reported seeing large quantities of dead or dying fish and cephalopods. In light of this, Governor Wilson has announced that additional measures will be taken to clean up the canals within Elendel, and other city water sources. After the Catacendre, we believed that dredging the canals every day would no long be a necessary task. The Ashmounts are gone, no longer required to keep humanity alive in the face of a bright and cruel, and thus Ashfalls no longer plague our skies, killing plants and clogging up rivers and streams. But, expert scientific witnesses have warned, we are creating our own ashfalls thanks to advancements in industry and technology. Factories often require water for their processes, which is often drawn from the canal. It is then later returned to the canal as waste water - which is usually unclean and full of dirt and dust and soot. It may not fall from the sky, but these waste products are filling our canals. Barge-owners have complained about water levels within the canals being too low at times to allow smooth progression, but it appears that the issue is not low water levels, but in fact high riverbed levels. Currently, dredging is carried out on the canals infrequently to remove rubbish and debris from the waterbed. While previously this has been all that was required, with factory soot added to the canals, this is no longer enough, and it has been suggested that more frequent dredging would help alleviate this and speed up travel time on the rivers for larger boats. Studies have suggested that this water might be responsible for ill health and disease, particularly among those who obtain water directly from pumps within the city. This morning, Governor Wilson announced a new dredging program, to be carried out monthly to prevent this problem from reoccurring. This will be funded by an additional tax being levied on businesses using large amounts of public water sources for manufacturing, as well as requiring businesses to have a permit to do so. The Governor also announced a new committee to plan for long-term solutions to this problem, to prevent it from reoccurring. 5. Haha - true. Though I dislike that kind of writing 100% of the time because it makes it sometimes too easy on the ready to foretell. You see a gun, you know a gun will be used, it's just a matter of by whom on whom. I'd rather be told of the gun hanging on the wall next to the broadsword and a painting of battle, and then come to find out later that the someone was beaten to death in that room than shot/stabbed/hit over the head with a painting. The room evoked violence, so it still served a purpose, but it didn't present a MacGuffin or 1:1, gun = direct death. Sometimes a Doomslug is just a teleporting Parrot Slug of DOOM. You know?

  7. From the album: The Knight Radiant

I.ve been a bad fan and really haven`t posted in a wile, but I was on a search for a new style. This is my first Kaladin piece, not how I imagined it honestly, but his story fitted the mood of the image and the style I wanted to try. So here it is, a really sad moment of our protagonist's life. He might not me be my favorite character from the pack, but I sure understand what made him what he is and I respect that!

  8. I'm sure this has been pointed out before, but I just came across the fact that the Greek Goddess of Ruin/ Downfall is called Ate (Ati's sister from another mister perhaps ?) Hence this passage from "Julius Caesar" (Mark Antony speaking) - And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge, with Ate by his side, come hot from Hell, shall in these confines with a monarch's voice, cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war... Here's hoping that dog Odium doesn't get hold of Ati's old Shard or we may all have a problem !

With night would come enemies. They needed to find weapons and armor, or shelter. Wister voiced his concern to the others. The centaur put him more at ease, but the wraith... something about it unsettled him. “We do also need money. Killing monsters should get us that.” Wister added.

  16. "Taya?" It was Jayce on the line. 90% sure. "Hiya. What's up?" "I heard about the government incident." "Oh. That." "What happened?" "I slightly did not reconcile the Shield to the government. They weren't so much interested in talking. Can't imagine why." "I noticed. Government people are still laboring to get rid of the feathers you left behind," Jayce sighed. "We're sending one of ours to quietly remove them. Keep in mind that the whole situation is somewhat sensitive... Can I still count on you to pull this off?" "Probably. See, I'm still alive and whatnot. And I still have a plan." "Do you?" "Most of a plan," Taya amended. "There may be a sprinkling of pieces to metaphorically stitch together, or wrinkles to metaphorically iron out. But, it would hardly be fair if things continued to go wrong, now, would it? Thanks for dealing with the feathers, by the way." "I see." There was a long pause before she spoke again. "Is there anything we can do to assist you?" "Well, now that you mention it. Yeah. There's a thing you could do." Probably-not-actually-Nathaniel grinned at her. "Any questions?" "Calamity," Blindside thought out loud, walking in step behind him. "That's one oddball city, even for epics." The provincial government, the drug kingpin, or the barrier epic. One of these would have to do. "So what's the deal with the old government? How do they fit into things? Are they epics or what?" Asking casual and innocent-sounding questions had never been her forte. Oh well. I still need to find these people. Before the big meeting thingy. "Yo, has anybody seen anything weird lately?" Unconsciously, some of the passerby looked warily back over their shoulders. Towards... A donut shop. The door was blown clean off of its hinges. The smell of fresh baked goods wafted from within in the form of visible lines suspended in the air. "Well, that could have been more difficult." From what little Taya knew of her mark, it was actually a legitimate lead. Funny how that worked.

  19. Mac walked into the Lab, stepping over the corpse on the ground. Gosh, he hadn't been in one of these in what? 90-100 years? He missed the smell of science. He waved a few acolytes over to clear out the bodies and started prepping the experiment. Today he was looking at Soulspikes, how Forgery and Hemalurgy could be combined. He was thinking that the permanency of Hemalurgy was going to allow for much greater variation in terms of what was usable in terms of stamps. The new history that stamps provided had to have a certain similarity to the original history, otherwise they wouldn't take. With hemalurgy though, this could be circumvented. Hopefully. If not, well, they always had more test subjects. Once the bodies were out, it was time to start experimenting. "Laurelai, can you come over here and start readying the first stamps?" He pointed to an acolyte in the corner. "Bring in subject number one. And make sure he's sedated!" Turning back to the recorder he said "This is Trial #1. We will be doing a small change, with an essence spike and a essence mark. We will be changing the ethnicity of a man. Instead of him being from Alethkar, he is from Azir. What do you think?" He turned to his lab assistants, @EddyJ @Voidus @Badadah @kenod

  20. This is going up a bit early, just because people are already talking about it and new folks are asking questions. @Chaos says the old thread isn't good enough and tasked me with making a new one, probably because I opened my big mouth at just the wrong time. So lo, the explanation comes: in just a bare few weeks, an annual phenomenon of confusion will bear down upon us like a shower of angry Tribbles.* Every year, as the days grow short and the weather grows cold, we creep slowly towards two great holidays that hover near the end of the year, ready to embrace us into their festivities. Families will gather, feasts will be had, and general revelry will echo throughout the land! I refer, of course, to the birthdays of Peter Ahlstrom and Brandon Sanderson.** If you don't know who Peter is, well, he's Brandon's assistant editorial director, and pours a ton of work into supporting the writing endeavors of our favorite author. Back in the days of the Timewasters' Guide, he roamed the forums under the moniker "Ookla the Mok." In order to remember and honor the days when he still had time to frolick among us unhindered, we change our screen names to some variant of "Ookla the <____>" beginning on his birthday, November 26. It's all terribly bewildering if you don't know what's happening. I joined the forum in late October of 2014, so I had barely a month to get settled in before suddenly I was surrounded by Ooklas. They were everywhere. So many Ooklas. And I had no idea why. So now I tell you all, so that hopefully you will be less confused than I was as a poor ickle noob. A lot of folks just play with it for a week or so, but some are hardcore enough to keep the madness going until Koloss Head-Munching Day (aka Brandon's birthday) in December. Enjoy the upcoming festivities! *Don't worry. The Tribbles have tiny parachutes. They'll be fine. **Why, what holidays did you think I meant?

  25. Wow. That's a rather pessimistic way of seeing things, in general. In a series where moving forward even after a life spent among suffernig and mistakes is a recurring theme, Jasnah doing that would give the idea that she just gave up, no hope for her. Of course they are not equals, we rarely are on equal ground with anyone except friends around our same age. The same way a person doesn't need to be on equal terms with their parents to trust them and vice versa, Shallan doesn't need to be on equal terms with Jasnah to do the same. I've given advice to my parents and grandparents on ocassion, even a teacher a time or two, the same way they give it to me, things like that are perfectly normal. And Shallan and Jasnah already have been in that situation, Shallan was worried about Jasnah and tried to help her when they were on the ship, and Jasnah tried to do the same for Shallan in Urithiru. At this point they're practically half-way through a normal adult-child friendship, I don't know what could ruin it. And being a scholar is probably the only one out of all the things she's doing right now that's basically a dream of her. Take that from her and things might get ugly.

  28. Oh gosh, there’s a lot. I’ll just list them as they come to me (a lot of these have been mentioned by others). [MEGA SPOILERS] When Kaladin is remembering how Tien died. Everything building up to that was just so good, and then Tien’s death came, and wow. This scene was the only time a book has ever made me truly cry. Like, I’ve teared up a little reading other books before, but I full out cried when Tien died. I just felt Kaladin’s pain so much, because I already really relate to him. Tien’s death had me thinking about my own little brother and that just made the crying worse. Definitely one of the most emotional cosmere scenes ever. Plus, everything that happens afterward with Kaladin choosing to save Dalinar and all that. Kelsier’s death. ‘Nuff said. The entire Kholinar battle up to Elhokar’s death. Like others have said, that death shook me so hard. Right when Elhokar was starting to become a better person, right when he was about to swear the first ideal, Moash comes out of nowhere and kills him. I’ve never hated someone more in my entire life. Also, seeing Kaladin deal with the effects of that while the group is Shadesmar really resonated with me. It was also cool to see Adolin help him. The end of Hero of Ages. God damnation. I AM UNITY. That entire buildup where you’re not sure if Dalinar will succumb to Odium or not is just so good. Wax killing Lessie (again). When Vin killed the Lord Ruler. I was not expecting that in the first book of the trilogy, and that scene was just so epic. The epic duel in WoR. That was so cool, and there’s that amazing quote. “Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do.” Szeth and Kaladin’s battle at the end of WoR. That was epic, and I had been waiting all of WoK and WoR to see surgebinders really go at it like in that battle. The scene with Shallan and Hoid during OB in Kholinar. That was just so emotional and Shallan desperately needed that at that moment. A lot of these are from Stormlight. Coincidence? I think not. EDIT: Added one more scene

  29. I felt like there was too much focused hatred of Spin in those moments she saw/felt the eyes to represent all other random Cyto beings in the galaxy/universe. I also don't feel like the snippets of conversation she listened into at the end evince "hatred" so much as worry/fear. There is something going on with the "eyes" that is... more than meets the eye so to speak IMO. Whether it's some Cognitive/Cyto locale entities or some singular powerful Cyto being who is watching humans with a hated eye or something, but something is going on.

  32. By the end of FE, the lord ruler was extremely weary of the skaa. He hated their interbreeding with the nobles, how unhappy they were with his rule, how they kept rebelling and pushing for change, pretty much everything that made them free-thinking human beings. He seemed pretty chill toward the nobles, with the exception of those who interbred with the skaa. My speculation is that he would have deepened the divide between skaa and noble even further, reducing skaa capacity for intelligence and communication skills as far as he could without crippling their ability to work the field as slaves, and possibly forcibly making them unable to cross-breed with "nobles." I doubt he would have restored the nobles allomantic powers to early-ascention levels as that would be a big change, which he disliked, and he only gave them the powers to get them to join his empire in the first place. Needless to say, he would hunt down all the feruchemists again and change them to be unable to pass down their power like before. He seemed pretty confident in his breeding program and he didn't want to extinct the Terris, so I'm reluctant to think he would go much further than that. As far as climate changes, he would probably do his best, which would be better than the previous attempt, but still probably garbage compared to what Sazed did eventually. He was oddly into hemalurgy, so he would probably come up with a new monster or two for funsies...

  41. We've had confirmation for a few months now that Kaladin's mother Hesina had a Lighteyed parent. Seems simple enough. There was some speculation early on about who she, and by connection Kaladin, was related to, but no one had evidence to supply so it was all being discussed frivolously. I may have just discovered Hesina's relative though through a single line in Oathbringer. Setting: the castle rescue attempt in Part Three with Kaladin and Elhokar moving down the final hallway leading to the Queen. (Page 811 in the Hardcover) This is the clue. Hesina and Aesudan, the queen of Alethkar were related. (Personal guess: Hesina is Aesudan's Aunt) Kaladin is a relative to the Crown. I also think this leads into why Aesudan was worried that the Almighty was displeased with her. She was hiding the fact that she had darkeyed parentage. According to the Vorin religion, all lighteyes are born to rule and are superior to the darkeyes. If it became known that one of her Grand?parents was darkeyed, she could lose standing among the nobility. It's easy to see how an Ardent could have found out and used the information to influence her behavior.

I swear, the moment Shallan saw the difference between the two illusions i.e she forgave herself on the other, and Hoid saying it's okay to live on. It hit home. Almost didn't finish the storming book because of that chapter.

  45. What I hope the most is that they take their time. By that I mean that while this show only had 3 seasons and the episodes had a run-time of under half an hour, it was so visually intensive, epic in scope, and adventurous in terms of long distances traveled that they would probably be better off making the jump to live action by splitting the Books into at least 2 seasons, especially if they will just have 8–10 episodes per season ala Game of Thrones and other shows from Netflix with a massive and expensive scope like Marco Polo. If the episodes themselves end up being around 45 minutes long then all the better because it will give them time to breath, improve upon the world building and characterization, make the distance traveled seem less irrelevant so they don’t run into trouble like the 7th season of Game of Thrones did when they had to rush their armies all over the continent and ensure there is more screen time for training with the elements. Personally, I think the first live action season actually has a perfect spot for a season finale before reaching the adaptation of the 10th animated episode: The episode where Aang goes to the Fire Nation to learn what’s at stake if he doesn’t master the elements before Sozin’s comet and sets the stage for the rest of the series. Then the second season could take its time, probably skip the critically panned and lore useless episode The Great Divide to better focus on the better stories and save some of the budget for the grand finale of Book 1 with the Siege of the Northern Water tribe. Book 2 has so many important events and new characters that I could actually see them divide it into three seasons for release and narrative purposes but if they go down that route they might try to film more back to back so that the actors physically age less. In that case, my personal preference would be to divide it into the following story arcs: Season 3 would adapt the Book 2 episodes 1–8, ending with the The Chase episode against Azula where Zuku and Iroh team up with Team Avatar for the first time. Add in the cliff hanger of the lightning attack that nearly killed Iroh, especially for those that never watched the animated show and its a good place for the end of the arc. Season 4 would adapt the Book 2 episodes 9–13. Might seem like few episodes for a 8–10 episode adaptation but there is a LOT going on those episodes that the live action show could do in a grand scale and would likely need more budget for less screen time. From the Earthbending training at the beginning, to the investigations in the Spirit Library to learn of the eclipse, to getting stranded in the desert after Appa is kidnapped (that alone should realistically take them a few episodes to solve as they wouldn’t be flying for once) to getting through the treacherous Serpent’s path and while trying to escape the massive apex predator and finally an epic action sequence to prevent the gargantuan drill from breaching the walls of the last stronghold of the Earth Kingdom for the season finale. Season 5 would then finish the remaining Book 2 episodes, ending with the Crossroads of Destiny season finale as the stakes had never been higher with Ba Sing Se falling, Aang being nearly killed in the Avatar State, Zuko betraying them after the viewers were rooting for him a lot more these last few seasons and more. As for Book 3, I am kind of torn there as my preference to divide it into 3 seasons as well would start getting in the way of reality, mainly the aging of the younger actors but if they can film it all the way and release them one arc at a time while they improve post production for the subsequent ones, I would end season 6 with Book 3 episode 8, the fan favorite Puppet Master episode. Afterwards, we can jump almost immediately into the invasion of the Fire Nation with the allies they gather through the series for a very strong opening act for Season 7. Then we go through the long awaited moment of Zuku joining Team Avatar, meeting the dragons and end it with the Boiling Rock prison break two parter for a satisfying season finale. And now, at long last we can go to the final arc for Season 8. After a strong premier where Azula forces them to flee the Western Air Temple it goes on with Katara and Zuko teaming up to hunt down the one that killed Katara's mom and end up finding closure. I am indifferent as to whether not The Ember Island play episode should be adapted but it would make for some good calm-before-the-storm comedy if they do it well. And then, the final showdown we have all been waiting for finally arrives when the original producers adapt the magnificent 4-part series finale. So, yeah, I think netflix and the producers would do well to divide the books into multiple seasons so that we get all the highlights and more and reduce inconsistencies that would inevitably arise when making the jump to live action. In reality, I doubt they would actually do 8 seasons for it even if I find it most ideal but I seriously doubt Netflix intends to just burn through the storylines in three years. If they play their cards right, this has the potential of being their greatest show yet and they would know it. But I guess we will see.

  46. I beg to differ. There are boundaries with age that should not be crossed in regards to age that don't go away until at least 25. Kal is 19. He is, despite everything he's faced, still largely a kid. That's why his character arc is about the very difficult for most adults, accepting that which he cannot control. More than just a kid, he's a judgemental jerk a lot of the time. That maturing is something that's dealt with through peer interactions. Jasnah has faced those things. She's self actualized in a way he hasn't. A relationship with her wouldn't be healthy. It would alter that development(and most likely Jasnah still sees him as a child.) They cannot be emotional equals yet. Not for a long time.
