  2. "Three of sixteen ruled, but now the Broken One reigns." "We took them in, as commanded by the gods. What else could we do? They were a people forlorn, without a home. Our pity destroyed us. For their betrayal extended even to our gods: to spren, stone, and wind." The Nightwatcher, the Sibling, the Stormfather. Spren, stone, storm. And: Unite them. A voice whispered the words in Dalinar's mind, echoing with the same resonant sound from months ago, when Dalinar had first started seeing the visions. "I'm doing so," Dalinar whispered back. Unite them. "Stormfather, is that you? Why do you keep saying this to me?" I said nothing. "I am Unity." He dipped his pen again. "Would you close the balcony doors again, gemheart?" he asked her. "The sunlight is distracting me from the other light." "Other light?" (...) As Navani shut the balcony doors, he closed his eyes and felt the warmth of a distant, unseen light. (there's another mention of the distant, unseen light, but I only have a physical copy and I can't find it) There is always another secret. They may not be the arc words of the Stormlight Archive, but they certainly are arc words of the Cosmere. Brandon also likes working with arc numbers; 16 on Scadrial, and 10 on Roshar. Ten, however, does not seem to be the only arc number of Stormlight Archive. There is also Odium's 9, but 3 is also a recurring number; spren, stone, storm. Nightwatcher, Sibling, Stormfather. Cultivation, Odium (?), Honor. Mishim, Nomon, Salas. Ashyn, Braize, Roshar. So, what's my point? Well, Odium doesn't fit. Why would a spren of Odium be a Bondsmith spren? Why would Odium be related to stone, while coming thousands of years after the others? Most importantly, consider the two epigraphs. The Eila Stele, which talks about the first Desolation, before the singers turned to Odium, talks about three gods: spren, stone and wind. The Death Rattle tells us "Three of sixteen ruled; Now the Broken One reigns." Unless this Death Rattle is foreshadowing a multishard (which would be scary, with a name like that), it's referring to Odium as the Broken One, which implies he is not one of the three who ruled. The Eila Stele implies similar: there were three gods before Odium showed up. So, uhm, where did that last shard go? Odium's prison. In Mistborn, Preservation almost completely blocks Ruin from influencing the world. However, that means that he himself can barely influence the world as well. Now compare that with Cultivation and Honor: Cultivation has been shown to appear, subtly influencing plans, but still to a degree Preservation was not able to do after creating the prophecies. Additionally, it is commonly believed she is also behind the Diagram, and may even be behind Taravangian's "prophet" day, altering and correcting the Diagram. Honor, as well, is known to have interacted substantially with the Knights Radiant, plus we have this quote, implying Honor as well had freedom: "Ships?" he [Dalinar] whispered. "They sailed during the storm? He controls it, the Stormfather said, (...). He uses it, as Honor once used me. The situation is, of course, different, as we know this battle as two shards against one. However, we also know by WoB that the actual power of a shard is infinite, and two times infinite versus infinite is still, in a way, equal. That's why another shard has to be Odium's prison. Now that we're done with the sensible theorizing, let's get to the crazy theorizing. Yes, I called that earlier stuff sensible. I am going to propose that this last shard is the shard of Unity, as predicted through The Fundamental Surges Part II: The Shards and a follow-up post I made on it. This shard, due to it's nature, is like the soul or mind of Adonalsium, stripped of it's power. The... centerpiece of Adonalsium, you might say. I also believe that Odium has partially freed himself somehow - perhaps similar to how Ruin was still subtly influencing the world, but over a longer timescale. On one hand, this is what allows Odium to appear to Dalinar and "ride the storm", on the other hand this is why Dalinar gets the vision with Nohadon, putting him back on track, as well as why he feels the "distant, unseen light"; with Odium partially free, Unity is not completely locked anymore either. Alternatively (and we've gone beyond crazy theorizing now), Odium may have killed Unity's Vessel without splintering the shard, and this is what his "we killed you" is about.

  6. Deadline has announced some pretty exciting news today about a story Brandon has been wanting to write for years, Dark One. This story, which has slipped in and out of the Cosmere over the years, is about a young man who instead being the hero prophesied to save the world, is the one destined to destroy it. The last we had heard about it was in last year's State of the Sanderson: Well it seems that that interest bore fruit as in their announcement Deadline reveals that not only is there a television series and graphic novel in the works, but there is also a multi-volume book series and a podcast are as well. The tv series is being developed by FreemantleMedia North America with Random House Studio and the graphic novel will be published by Vault Comics. Where the tv series and graphic novel appear to be planned to tell the same story, the book series will expand on it while focusing on secondary characters and the podcast will explore the events leading up to the tv series. Here is the pitch given by Deadline: I for one am always excited to hear about new Brandon projects on the horizon. I know that Brandon's previous foray into graphic novels has been met with mixed opinions, but I'm happy to see that hasn't given up on the medium. Ultimately I'm very interested to see how this story will play out over four different media! Brandon has tried a much more limited version of this before, with Legion (the original plan was for him to write the novellas to tie into a tv series). This however is much more ambitious, but Brandon is also a much bigger deal. There are no dates for anything yet, but I think the future is promising.

  8. We know that being an Inquisitor doesn't automatically shave that person's head. I think any sane person who sees a big man with railroad spikes in place of their eyes is gonna freeze with terror or probably die of terror. Before Sazed's final ascension Inquisitors were kinda like the enemy of the state and unstoppable killers even after Sazed's ascension Marsh was a figure of death. Sooo. Who shaves his head ? Is he that good at shaving that despite having only ironlines as sight he still can shave his head to perfection? Kandra ? Uhm him intimidating people into shaving his head ? Does he like soothe/riot the person all the time who he decided to shave his head ?(wouldn't that create some weirder mythology about him) Does he have a really really weird personal barber like adolin every century ?(like does he post an ad "Hiring: Personal barbers willing to shave anywhere. High pay is given") Does he ask Harmony and go "yo, Sazed it's shaving time" (yes Sazed is the Hero of Ages, yes he is the god of Scandrians, yes he is the most powerful person in Cosmere atm but knowing Sazed is he really the type to decline if you ask him to pick a shirt, "can you please make tea tnx" or shave a beard. Ok Sazed might actually be the only Shard where you are the servant and you can order him around) ? Yes. This is currently the most intriguing mystery of Cosmere for me.

  9. Hot off the heels of yesterday's monumental announcement about Brandon's multimedia plans for Dark One, Publisher's Weekly has revealed more information about the graphic novel slice of the pie. The graphic novel will consist of two volumes, the first of which is due out in Spring 2019, less than a year away! The also revealed the creative team that will be co-writing it with Brandon, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. On a personal note, I found this news incredibly exciting as Lanzing and Kelly have worked on some of my favorite comic series in recent years. Yesterday I felt cautiously optimistic, today I am full steam ahead on the hype train, because I know these guys can write a good story. The two of them plus Brandon? Now that is going to be something awesome. They also revealed what seems to be the cover art which looks pretty storming cool: Jackson Lanzing, on his twitter, has also confirmed that the artist for the project is Nathan Gooden, and posted line art for part of the cover:

  10. While you’re at it, can you make the powers of every smell in flatulemy, hemalufarty, every heightening in afartening, all the orders of the Butts Radiant, and all types of Fartiar? Plus maybe as a bonus, all the symbols in ButtDor, and some original Fart stamps?

  11. I've always been of the opinion that Radiantcy is not genetically passed down in a family, but more "culturally". Family members often share similar outlooks and values in life, in essence causing them to act in a similar manner. If the values of a family were attractive to a particular type of Spren, if wouldn't be surprising then that multiple Radiants might pop up.

When you have a 10 minute rant to your friend after you check your school library and realise that they have four copies of each Twilight book and three boxes of The Hunger Games, but not a single one from Brandon Sanderson. 13. I have recently been doing some re-reading of the Stormlight Archive, and some new clues stood out to me about the nature of the third Bondsmith spren. So, naturally, I wrote a whole essay about it. Proceed at your own risk! I don't think I've seen this theory discussed before, but my apologies if it has been. (Also, it's late, so I don't promise coherency.) My theory is that The Sibling is a spren that is somehow related to or representative of the moons of Roshar, particularly Nomon. Further, I think the destruction of New Natanan and the Shattered Plains may have been what harmed The Sibling and caused it to “slumber.” Still reading? Ok, here’s why I think these things: The main basis for this theory comes from the scene in which Shallan, Adolin, and Bridge Four confront the Midnight Mother. During that confrontation, Shallan notes the artwork: This seems to be a depiction of all the spren that are capable of forming bonds with Radiants. That means that the first three spren Shallan describe are actually depictions of the Bondsmith spren. So we have a cloud of energy; that seems to obviously be the Stormfather. We have a woman in the shape of the tree; this could be the Nightwatcher. That leaves us with a man hovering before a blue disc. This description is uncannily similar to the end paper art we have of Ishar. (Here) You’ll note that the discs in the background definitely look like the three moons of Roshar, with the smaller Salas and Mishim on either side of Nomon. So, why is there a picture of Ishar and the moons next to depictions of the Radiant spren? My thought is that the moons must somehow be related to The Sibling. (Of course, the other argument is that these are not depictions of the Bondsmith spren, but actually of Honor and Cultivation. But does that make Ishar some secret shard? Did people view him as on a level equal to Honor and Cultivation? He does seem pretty insistent that he is a god right now. But still, I’m going to stick with the Bondsmith spren depiction idea for now.) Additional support for the idea that the moons are related to the third Bondsmith spren: I find it interesting that the Stormfather always refers to this sibling in the plural. This could be purely to obscure the gender. Or it could be because the spren represents multiple things, rather like a collective noun. In this case, we have a spren that represents the moon, and Roshar just so happens to have three of them. And further, it’s understandable why the Stormfather refers to this spren as his sibling, but why does everybody else seem to call it The Sibling? Sibling to what? In the epigraphs, even a former Radiant, who should have more knowledge about who/what the third spren is, refers to it as the Sibling, as if that’s the only name it goes by. If it’s just because it’s the sibling Bondsmith spren, then why do Radiants refer to the Stormfather by his unique name, but not the Sibling? I find it interesting that the Shin refer to the moons as the three sisters. And Wit, in his story of Nomon, refers to the relationships among the moons as siblings. Speaking of that story that Wit told (and Sigzil attempted to tell, unsuccessfully) If my theory is in any way right, and if there is any truth at all in Wit’s story, then it brings some interesting implications about the relationship between Nomon’s spren and the Natanatan people, maybe even giving a clue as to what happened to the Sibling. The story tells about how Mishim traded places with Tsa, a mortal, and Tsa conceived a child with Nomon. We know that the story alludes to the fact that Natanatans had Aimian blood in them. But I think it may also be a hint about the Sibling (assuming I’m right about the connection with Nomon). Interestingly, this story is the only other mention of siblings, besides the Sibling in Oathbringer. Also, purely coincidentally I’m sure, I find it interesting that the epigraphs about the Sibling begin in the chapter following Wit’s story. The story clearly establishes a connection between the people of Natanatan and Nomon. This could also imply that there’s a connection between the people of Natanatan and the Sibling. Perhaps the Sibling even originated or lived in Natanatan. Before I go any further, let’s go back to those epigraphs for a second. In them, the Elsecaller who is recording the memory seems to believe that the Sibling is withdrawing from the Radiants, not because it intended to or because the Radiants are no longer worthy, but because the cognitive reflection has changed. In other words, people are thinking about the Sibling differently, and so the Sibling has itself changed. We know that the kingdom of Natanatan was destroyed, and the Shattered Plains (once Stormseat, the capital of Natanatan) was, well, shattered. Perhaps it was this shattering and the loss of Natanatan that caused the harm to the Sibling, which caused it to withdraw. Perhaps because the people were no longer there, they were no longer thinking of the Sibling, causing it to “slumber.” Also, Wit ends his story with, Perhaps this is a reflection, again, of what happened to the Sibling. It learned of loss, somehow. The loss of Natanatan? Other Interesting Tidbits: In Way of Kings, Dalinar refers to Natanatan as the Granite Kingdom. I don’t really know if this is relevant, but stone is important on Roshar. Additionally, they were a people apparently known for building towers. Again, I think this strengthens the idea that the people of Natanatan were perhaps involved in the creation of the tower in Urithiru and also had some connection to the Sibling, which we suspect powers Urithiru. And, I find it curious that Oathbringer mentions that New Natanan was working with Dalinar, but we hear literally nothing about them: This seems fishy to me. I think those New Natanans are going to become important. And lastly, we have this little bit from an interlude, which has some interesting mythology surround the people of Natanatan. Well, the night is darkest is just before the rising of Nomon. Also, an Everstorm really helps to make things dark. Perhaps we need the people of New Natanatan to come back, to restore the Sibling and thus restore the tower. And this lengthy essay doesn’t even begin to get into possible connections with Aimia. Or what on earth Roshar Ishar is doing in that depiction of the moons in Urithiru. And, is there any significance to the son Tsa had, the son born to be a god?

  14. Hello, It's me, Mr. Fancy. I've been a fan of Brandon Sanderson for a couple years now but within the last year I've gotten really into the cosmere. I've made may way through much of the coppermind and have been working through the arcanum. I was just watching a Shardcast and was like "Wow I've got an idea! Maybe I should post it! So here I am making an official account. I'm currently on the Oathbringer release shardcasts so I'll hopefully I'll ask some good questions. Thanks to anyone who helps build and maintain this website. It's awesome.

  18. I am not excited by this news. This is the same thing that has happened with Martin, and to a lesser extent is happening to Rothfuss, where a multimedia franchise pushes the books to the wayside. When the time comes for Dark One related novels, what other projects are going to the back-burner? Dark One will be time-sensitive; you need all your media to be coming out together, or it defeats the point of doing a multiplatform push. If Dark One work ramps up in 2019, which Brandon currently has earmarked for writing Stormlight Four, which is going to win out? Brandon's got two other Random House series ready to launch (Skyward later this year, Apocalypse Guard whenever he and Dan Wells get the story worked out). I have a sinking feeling they'll join the Alcatraz/Rithmatist/Elantris/Warbreaker stack of things Brandon wants to finish some day. (But first, this new project has a ton of momentum, so it's the right time to do it!) Don't get me wrong, Brandon is his own boss, he can write what he enjoys writing. But he has too much fun writing the first book of a series, and not enough fun writing the last, which is why the State of the Sanderson look-ahead grows every year.

  19. When your sister asks you if you had to pick one series and you can keep reading/watching it, but you can’t read anything else, what would you pick. I answered Cosmere like any sane Sandersfan. We then agured if the Cosmere counts as a series. She said no it was a few series, but I said yes because they happen in the same world and they all have one character in common.

  21. The only reason I have mixed feelings about this is, I'm already worried that I won't live to see Book 10 of the Stormlight Archives. I would NEVER want to inhibit Brandon's creativity! ... but sometimes I'd like to ask him, "Don't you want your parents to live to read the final book in your life's greatest work?" Ah well. I haven't had TV in over 15 years, but if the TV series does ever get produced, that means I'll have to get cable because no way am I missing a Sander-show.

  30. The Lord Ruler aka Rashek or another fullborn easily beats anyone else we have seen so far. Then Szeth if he has nightblood as infinite Stormlight makes it incredibly OP. After that, probably radiants, either Szeth sans Nightblood, Kaladin or Jasnah of those we have seen, again due to infinite Stormlight. We don't really know what a full strength trained Elantrian could do, same goes for Hoid so it hard to rank them against awakeners, Mistborn and Feruchemists.
