  2. LG44: Day 6 - Ate Night fell quietly over Kae. A band of children played tag in an alleyway, before one of their mothers came to shoo them all back home before nightfall. The tinkers and merchants packed up their stalls and closed their shops to head home. From above, Kae was full of flickering lights. Candlelight, now, no Aons anymore. Once, the city would have glowed like a beacon, but now... Well. Now it was dark, and through the darkness moved souls yet darker. Jeskeri cultists stalked through the dark, searching for new sacrifices, but the people were scared, and every door was shut to them. Kainae had decided not to risk painting again, tonight. She needed a decent night’s sleep for once. She slept soundly beneath her covers, secure in the knowledge that her doors and windows were barred as securely as she’d been able to manage. Straw still ran through the night, delivering messages. Mostly illicit ones, now, but he didn’t particularly care for the trysts of lovers so long as they’d pay him to deliver their messages. The Imperial Mint sat enthroned and imperious. In a small Derethi chapel, a voice rang out, speaking of coming disaster and doom. Only by me may you be saved, it intoned. Only by me may you be saved through your sacrifice, whispered the Jeskeri passing in the night. And yet those praying for salvation would not have been comforted, even if they had heard. Candles winked out in the night, one by one, and darkness fell on Kae. No one died! No one was taken by the Shaod! Conversion tally: 10 / 18 Day 6 has begun and will end at 7pm MST on April the 28th. 5. Hello, all you Sanderfans. I signed up a little while back, haven't gotten around to introducing myself until now. Here's a bit about me: I am a very picky grape-eater. I enjoy outdoor doubles volleyball. Veeeeeery much so. I have ridden bareback on an elephant. Which was pretty cool. My "impressive beard" gives me +2 dice to all defense rolls in Social and Mental Conflicts. Until it gets too annoying for me to ignore anymore and I shave it off. I have never been to Boston in the fall. That'll do for now, I guess. Not sure how often I'll be posting, but I'll probably be visiting the site fairly often.

  7. When someone says something obvious and you mutter "It's like you can see the future...VOIDBRINGERS" When you're doing an art thing and you say unity and pattern, then realize what you said. When you literally cannot stop making Connections between Remnant and the Cosmere. Qrow is Hoid because he uses Yolish Lightweaving; Oz is Harmony; etc, etc. When you see emboldened PM titles out of the corner of your eye and think, "I need to click on - oh. Wait." Because it was actually a hallucination. When you see some guy who looks at a city skyline once and draws it all exactly on CNN, and your first thought is 'Lightweaver'. When you get bored and just start writing down every Cosmere place you can think of. When you write a double-sided page of Wayne quotes and still aren't all the way through SOS. When you have three whole pages, double-sided, of questions for Brandon...and are nowhere near done writing them all. (Not even taking any from here or the Google Docs.) Then my non-Sanderfan friend saw the pages while I was writing one. I'd abbreviated Questions for Brandon to QFB, and she saw the acronym and at once said "Does that stand for Questions for Brandon?" When everyone is talking about Wayde from RPO and you, having not seen it, just think of Wayne every time and get confused.

  8. Hello everyone! I'm excited to announce that Palanaeum source code is finally becoming publicly accessible! We promised that from the start, but it actually took some additional work to make sure it fulfills all the requirements for it to be licensed under the AGPL license. Those of you, who are not familiar with software development and software licensing are probably confused, so let me explain the situation. Up until now, Arcanum software was kept in private repository. If something needed to be changed, only very limited number of coders could do it. From now on, the code is available to anyone, so if someone wants to contribute some of their time, they are free to do so! Additionally, because we use an open license, other fan groups are encouraged to use this code to create their own versions of Arcanum! I know that there is practically no documentation and the README is rather basic, but I'm open to answering questions and giving a hand to anyone interested in developing or running Palanaeum Oh, I nearly forgot Here's the public repository: https://github.com/Palanaeum/palanaeum

  9. When this happens... Friend A: “I actually really don’t like Sanderson’s books. Seriously, how do you even read them?” Me: (mutters angrily) “Airsick lowlander.” Friend A: “What?...” — —LINE BREAK— — Friend B: “Yeah, I was reading the Way of Kings. It really wasn’t that good.” Me: “Did you have your brain coated in aluminum or something? That can’t be healthy.” Friend B: “I... I’m sorry?” Me: “I mean, obviously. The aluminum must block the Investiture of Sanderson’s incredible writing.” Friend B: “I don’t understand.” Me: “Well, you would if you read Cosmere books! Storms, you have a lot to learn.”

  10. It's unfortunate that we no longer receive convert tallies at night, but as the number of converts went up by three and Wilson apparently neither used nor passed her pendant, it seems that the player who used the pendant had been converted by the Gyorn and wants Shu-Dereth to win. The fact that whoever used the pendant retained their convert status means that one of the single conversion nights was caused by the Gyorn converting their pendant owning Odiv, or somebody was converted on the same night they were gifted a Shu-Dereth pendant. Since I'm pretty sure the Gyorn has to convert all other players including their Odiv and there was only one conversion on both nights two and three, the former option is looking more likely. If the third player to start with a pendant did pass on their pendant, they should claim now and state who they gave their pendant to. The following is based on the presumption that the player who started with the third pendant is the Odiv. Below is a list of all living players and their starting roles and items, with the Elantrians separated out. Now, we tentatively cross out any name that has a role and an item or two items. If the Gyorn swore an Odiv on Night 1, we can cross out Seonid for being scanned by a Korathi pendant and Joe for doing the scanning. If the Odiv was sworn on Night 2 or 3, this would not be the case as Joe's use of a pendant would not have determined Seonid's convert status and Joe would have had no incentive to hold on to his Korathi pendant as a mere convert. Lopen has apparently mostly cleared Mraize of being the Gyorn, and I assume that applies to him being the Odiv as well. I'm pretty sure it's impossible for there to be an Elantrian Odiv who started with a Derethi pendant, as they can't target outside of Elantris. Hooray! Our Odiv suspect list is essentially the same as our Gyorn list, with Straw, King Cole, Walin, and Imperial Mint being the prime suspects with our secondary suspects being Seonid, Joe, and Mraize. If there were an Elantrian pendant holder who became an Odiv, the schedule would look something like this: D1(3): Pendant holder 1, Steeldancer, Elantrian (Pendant holder 1 uses their pendant on Araris, Steeldancer passes to Elenion, the Elantrian is the Odiv, one becomes converted) D2(4): Araris, Elenion, Elantrian(Odiv, pendant), Elantrian (Araris dies, Elenion passes to Wilson, the Gyorn converts a random player, the Odiv does nothing) D3(4): Wilson, Elantrian(Odiv, pendant), Elantrian, non-Elantrian (The Gyorn converts the Odiv, the Odiv converts an Elantrian) D4(5): Wilson, Elantrian(Odiv, pendant, convert), Elantrian, Elantrian, non-Elantrian (The Gyorn converts Seonid, the Odiv pendants an Elantrian and converts another) D5(8): Wilson, Elantrian(Odiv, convert), Elantrian, Elantrian, Elantrian, random non-Elantrian, Seonid, Elantrian Since there are only four Elantrians, this is impossible, unless the Odiv is capable of converting themselves or the Elantrians have figured out how to target outside Elantris. Either of these cases would make this scenario improbable instead of impossible. Little Wilson: Jindo warrior, Seon A Joe in the Bush/Coop772: Korathi pendant Steeldancer: Derethi pendant, Seon Straw: Elenion: Prince, Seon King Cole: Devotary of Spontaneity: Dula, Seon Mraize: The Honey Badger/Walin: Seon Kidpen: Monarch, Seon Seonid: TheYoungPyromancer: Seon, poison vial Imperial Mint: TheMightyLopen: Prince, Seon Droughtbringer: Cadmium Compounder: Kynedath/Jondesu: Hemalurgic Headshot:

  11. I fully disbelieve that Odium himself can grant future-sight, though his corruption of The Made may give him some access to oracles. Here is a quote from the diagram: "There is one you will watch. Though all of them have some relevance to precognition, Moelach is one of the most powerful in this regard. His touch seeps deep into the soul as it breaks apart from the body, creating manifestations powered by the spark of death itself. But no, this is a distraction..." Moleach doesn't even have future-sight himself, but instead uses soul-fission to glean a random fact about the future. Can we assume Moelach The Made also had this ability? Odium doesn't even seem involved in this process. Heck, Moelech is barely involved. Are we impressed by this? Are we spooked by the unbelievable power of Moelach's future sight? I certainly am not. Moleach seems more "spooky" than "useful". Odium seems ... overly obsessed with proving that seeing the future is of Odium, and that Odium himself is super good at it. Secret History Spoilers Odium sucks at seeing the future. I mean, just look at his situation: he has been stuck in the Roshar System forever due to a wooops. He has lost who knows how many desolation. Even more interestingly, it seems like Odium is completely blind to others who can see the future (Renarin in the diagram, Kaladin using the Dor Orb, Cultivation and her pruning of Dalinar, and possibly Smart Mr.T's plan). I think Odium is bluffing about being able to see the future, and Odium uses The Death Rattles as either a corrupted way of seeing bits of the future, or as a big red-herring that convinces the masses not to utilize future-sight against their enemy. If Odium has bluffed his way into convincing Roshar to essentially never plan for the future, then Odium is more genius than Ruin.

  15. Reading OB really helped to take off the rose-tinted glasses I was wearing with regards to Brandon's writing. He has a lot of talent in many different areas of writing, but I believe he weaknesses revolve around his characters, and his dialogue between characters. The originality and creativity of his plots, worlds, and magics are second to none, but he has a ways to go in other areas. But you know, that's ok. Some authors you go to when you want to really read and enjoy a description of a sunrise cresting over a beautiful and intricate landscape. Others for when you want to absorb clever or thought provoking dialogue. Others you read because the concept of the narrative conflict, and the plot revolving around it are just so intriguing. There are many such elements to stories, and authors aren't always going to hit on all of them. Perhaps Brandon will get better at things that he misses as he grows as a writer and gets further in the SA, perhaps he won't. I would say so long as you are still enjoying your journey, then keep reading, and then let it go as soon as you don't. Sounds to me like SA may just not be doing it for you, and that is ok.

  16. Lol. Also, more of the “You Know You’re A Sanderfan” Scenarios... When you literally have a group chat called “I am a Stick.” When you have an entire document full of Cosmere theories. When you talk to your friends about what Rosharan ethnicity each person you see would be. (Blonde hair for that person over there? Iri. That dude next to her is so pale... Shin? Maybe? Oh look, that girl over there has dark/tan skin and dark hair... is she Alethi? Or Reshi? This is an actual problem... Alethi or Reshi?!) When the main problem circulating through your head is whether or not someone would be Alethi or Reshi... When you play “Where’s Hoid?” in other books besides the Cosmere... (There’s some random, insightful man who only appears briefly! It’s Hoid! Oh wait, wrong fandom...) When you search up “gold ability to burn” because of chemistry reasons, and Mistborn is the first thing that pops up. You internally freak out. (Okay, scratch that— it’s both internal and external. You scream and send pictures to all of your Sanderfan friends.) When your friend says that they’re bored, so you pick up the stack of Sanderson books you just reread and throw it at them. “This is Mistborn Era 1, Mistborn Era 2, Warbreaker, Elantris, the Stormlight Archive, and Arcanum Unbounded” you say. “Read them all. Then, get an account on the 17th Shard, and get the manuscript of Aether of Night. Now go. Leave me to my fan forums.” When almost every tab open on your device is Cosmere or Sanderson related. When you have no drawing abilities but you still want to be like Shallan, so you draw a bunch of random scribbles and call it “Pattern.” When your friend says that you’re lying, so you just scream “LIES. DELICIOUS LIES” in their face. Then, your friend, who is a Sanderfan, follows up with “SUCH INTERESTING TRUTHS.” When you say “kolo, sule?” or “got it, Gancho?” instead of “okay, guys?” When you make up ways to put the orders of the Knights Radiant on a license plate, and vow to use it one day. When after you finished Words of Radiance, you saw a projector and thought about freeing the poor Cryptic from the inside of the vile machine. They were obviously helping with Lightweaving the image... When you scream because Sanderson just released another book, and people literally have to ask you to shut up and calm down... When you can’t carry the amount of Sanderson books you want from a bookstore. Whenever you finish a different book, and someone asks how it was, you respond: “Oh, it was really good. It wasn’t as good as Sanderson’s work, but still good.” When a friend says “YOLO” and you immediately think: “Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.” When you start a “Save the Chasmfiends Fund,” the “Chull Rights Organization,” and the “Chickens are People Too Association.” When you dream about the Cosmere. When you start to see spren around you, because spren are everywhere. Duh.

  18. I've been wondering if Sja-anat can puppeteer or possess living things via her lesser corrupted spren and in so doing consume memories and knowledge. Part of why I say this comes from the vision in Words of Radiance: (Emphasis mine) What does "without a carrier" mean, unless that red-eyed, shadowy spren that Dalinar saw was able to bond with and/or inhabit people or animals? We know Sja-anat can directly interface with her corrupted spren, as shown with Shallan and the corrupted gloryspren, so it only stands to reason that if that spren is bound to someone, she could potentially have an opening through the firewall, so to speak, to "hack" the person bonded with that spren. Either way, I'm really curious if we'll see Renarin speak with her and vice-versa, on account of Glys's bond.

  20. Hello. We are closing this topic. If you would like to post nonsense, topics in Introduce Yourself are not appropriate for that. You can use General Discussion. You're basically spamming up Introduce Yourself for no reason, which kind of isn't cool. In addition, you will see another, unrelated reason for why this topic is locked very soon.

  21. Or maybe it is more insidious than that. We have already seen the unmade able to affect the minds of humans in their region, whether it be the Thrill, the Death Rattles, or the Heart of the revel. If three unmade are able affect peoples behaviour, and at least two of them are the less cognitively able Unmade, then maybe she can too. There was that line in Hessica, the book Shallan found, that said you should run from a region if weird spren start appearing, as it is indicative of her presence. So what if, when she corrupts a lesser spren, it becomes a gateway. And then if you attract that type of spren, I don't know, corrupted joy spren. What if there is a Connection between a person feeling an emotion, and the spren attracted to and feeding on that emotion? While you are feeling joy, the corrupted joy spren appears, with non corrupted spren, or only corrupted appear, and while the corrupted spren 'feeds' she can highjack that connection to plant suggestions? We already saw that each corrupted spren can act as her eyes and ears, when the GLory spren she highjacked passes info to Shallan in Shadesmar. But what if she can do more? With enough corrupted spren in a region, what if she can start manipulating and programing sleepers among the humans? I only suggest the sleeper action because otherwise the advice to flee an area with corrupted spren seems excessive for an Unmade that can only spy through her minions. She must have some other ability that would make her that scary. So maybe she is part of why the Queen's guards were so... Okay with killing messengers and being creepy-evil. It's not just that they are following the queen, but they are being subtly modified by Sja-anat to think this is normal, okay behaviour through the dense concentration of corrupted spren.

  25. You could probably attach the gems that make spanreeds move to a knife. Just go to a person’s house, and leave a knife with a gem on it somewhere inconspicuous. Attach the corresponding gem to a stick or something, and wave the stick around madly when you know the other person is home. Of course, if you’re Jasnah, you could just write to them, and that’s the best weapon in all of Roshar.

  26. Basics: •Cycles are ~47 (day)/24 (night) hours long. Night turns will start a bit after the Day turn ends, and will end at 5:00 PM. Day turns will start as soon as I am finished processing the Night turn actions. Day turns will end at 5:00 PM. •There will be five factions in the game. Every faction has a doc to communicate in. Every faction’s goal is to eliminate all other factions. •There are no secret roles. •During the Day turn, there will be a normal lynch. •During the Night turn, there will be an anonymous lynch (all votes are put in via GM PM). •PMs are not allowed. •This game is role madness. •If you do not post for two cycles in a row, you will die. If a player dies from inactivity, a random player in their faction will gain an allomantic ability. •Each cycle you have one allomantic action, and one social action. •Every other cycle, a random player from the faction with the least players will gain an allomantic power. •To allow rollover to occur faster, I’ll edit in the writeup when I have time. Hopefully, this will minimize the gap between turns. •Every player has a social role and some players also get an allomantic role. Social Roles: •Gossip: You discover the alignment of a player of your choice. You can only use this ability during the Night. You can use this ability three times per game. This is an active ability. •Informant: You discover the role of a player of your choice. You can only use this ability during the Night. You can use this ability three times per game. This is an active ability. •Well Connected: You have one vote taken off you. This is a passive ability. •Orator: Your vote counts as two votes. This is a passive ability. •Secretive: You put in your vote during the Day via GM PM. Your vote in the thread does not count as a vote. This is a passive ability. •Shy: Each cycle, you can send an anonymous note to a player of your choice. You can only use this ability at Night. This is an active ability. •Romantic: You start the game with a PM with another Romantic. Neither of you can put in any actions that target the other romantic. Neither of you can vote for each other. This is a passive ability. •Underground Contacts: You can roleblock a player of your choice. This ability can only be used at Night, and lasts for one cycle. You can use this ability three times per game. Allomantic Roles: •Mistborn: You can use every allomantic power once. You will have all of the passive metals (Pewter, Tin, and Copper) for the entire game. •Coinshot: Once per game, you can kill a player of your choice. You can only use this ability on a Night cycle. This is an active ability. •Lurcher: Each Night cycle, you can protect a player of your choice. You cannot self protect. This is an active ability. •Thug: You can survive one kill attempt. This is a passive ability. •Tineye: You can create PMs with other players (group PMs are not allowed) (GM must be included in all PMs). This is an passive ability. •Rioter: Each cycle, you can change a player’s vote to a player of your choice (using this ability cancels your own vote). This is an active ability. •Soother: Each cycle, you can cancel one vote. This is an active ability. •Seeker: Each Night cycle, you can discover the role and alignment of a player of your choice. This is an active ability. •Smoker: You are immune to seeking, soothing, and rioting. If you want to, you can use an action to turn off your ability. You can then use another action to turn it off again. This is a passive ability. Balls: Balls happen every night. During the ball, players can talk in group PMs. Players will be randomly placed in a group PM. As the number of players decreases, so does the number of group PMs. During a ball there will be up to six group PMs: •Entrance: (25+ players alive) •Dining Hall: (20+ players alive) •Dance Floor: (15+ players alive) •Balconies: (10+ players alive) •Great Hall: (5+ players alive) •Side Hall: (5+ players alive) Clarifications: •The Tineye must be in all PMs they make. •Vote counts during the Day will show the number of votes each player got, and will show the people who voted for them in the thread. Vote counts during the Night will only show the number of votes each player got. •Rioters can move a vote to a no vote and a no vote to a vote. •You cannot get the same ability twice. The game with start on May 5, at 5:00 PM EST. List of Players: 1. MacThorstenson (Malcolm MacClaimen) 2. ElephantEarwax (Rend) 3. Araris Valerian (Hadrian Penrod) 4. RippleGlyf (Claire Lepinceau) 5. 27. @Mraize Has been screwing with us this whole time. He claimed the Ghostblood's were disbanded. This is very false. I discovered the plot when I saw this message: And this one: You can already see the beginnings of this. @PrinceDusty has joined TUBA. Clearly this is a plot to try and assassinate the whole of TUBA. I waited to publicly release this because Mraize has been a friend of the Liebrary for a long time. But if he is going to attempt a complete clearing of the guilds, then he must be stopped. I still hope for peaceful resolution, but I fear this may not be possible. I would like to apologize to @Archer and @Stormblessed Dolphin for having @MacThorstenson lie to them about the identity of the person who tipped him off. I wanted this to be known by the members of TUBA, but didn't want them to know it was me. Using Mac as my intermediary was my solution to this problem. Please. We beg of you. Join us in the fight against these traitors. @Nohadon @Voidus as well. We will all need to rise up against these people if we want to avoid complete death. Join us. Fight.

  28. I have looked around and I haven't seen this question asked yet so I thought I would throw it out there. What are the chances that Waxillium Ladrian is a Returned. During Lightsong's vision whilst imprisoned he remembers dieing and being sent back as a returned. I don't know of any inclination of Wax being Returned after choosing to come back, nor do I know any specific connection between Harmony and Endowment. So I am wondering if any of you have any information that could confirm or deny this possibility would be cool. Obviously Scadrial Returned would be different than Nalthis Returned as they have different investiture. What do you guys think?

  30. Hey guys, I'mma make a bit more serious post. May is Mental Health Month. There are a lot of people here on the Shard who have serious mental illnesses that incapacitate them, illnesses like anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are just some of the better-known ones. There's a whole lot more that goes on behind closed doors, Multiple Personality Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depersonalization/Derealization, Schizophrenia, PTSD. All of the nasties that we like to pretend don't exist, but make a lot of people's lives a living hell. Ignoring when our friends struggle is callous and vile. So I would like to invite you all, TUBA, DA, Stick-ers, Ghostbloods, Liebrarians, and everyone else, to turn your profile picture green and/or spread the word in your signature. We live, we love, we fight for each other. #silentnomore

It was a Halloween costume I put together a few years back, with some help from my dog. I got an old, large jacket, a few sheets, and a small table. Hid myself under the table and sheets, got my dog to sit on my chest and poke his head out of the jacket, and got my arms in the sleeves (not necessarily in that order). It was great, everyone who came by trick-or-treating was like, "What the...?"

  32. Rereading Oathbringer again it really stood out to me how many new children are introduced to the story. Oroden, Gavinor, Rock's children Gift, Chord, Rock Jr., Star, Kuma'tiki and Song, Sah's daughter Vai... Even Mr. T's grandchildren are mentioned. There's Lift and Yanagawn as well, who aren't new but still get a good bit of development. With the back 5 books set at a time where most of these characters are at least approaching adulthood, can we speculate what will become of them? Obviously some will be more important than others, some might not be relevant at all, but I can't help feeling Brandon has introduced as many kids as he has specifically so they can play a larger role in the second arc. Lift, Oroden and Gavinor are the ones I feel like will have the greatest impact on the narrative, but I think Yanagawn is well on his way to becoming a more prominent character as well. He's had a lot of screen time and even a point of view chapter in OB. I think he has a lot of potential. I'd also love to see Vai and other singer children featured more. They are growing up in a very different world than their parents knew. I think it would be great to see how they get along growing up during a Desolation. Ditto with the missing listener children, lots of good stuff there. Is there anybody I missed? Gavinor and Oroden will probably be especially important in the back 5, but I couldn't say how specifically. I realize this is all very far in the future still, but I think the seeds are there, and speculation is what we do best. So how does everybody else feel about all the children?

  33. Resonance is when you have two(or more) powers, and through Cosmere Physics, you get a bonus Power. This Power is completely separate from your other powers, rather than a combination. In short: To Clarify/Give Examples: A-Cadmium(time bubble) is Power A. F-Gold(healing) is Power B. Resonance is Power D. Placing a Bubble and using that extra time to heal is just "Use Power A, then Use Power B." His Resonance doesn't even enter that situation. Shallan Soulcasting a Goblet into Blood, and then Lightweaving a floor to hide the mess is just "Use Power A, then Use Power B." Shallan taking a "memory" of someone and Lightweaving to disguise as them later is "Use Power D, then Use Power B." You can use your resonance and your powers in tandem/sequence, but your Resonance is its own separate power, and you can use it without using your powers at all, just as you can use one of your powers without using any of your other powers.

Don't pause for a moment to grab a handful of gold coins or some neat trinket. Only the main character could possibly succeed at doing this, and it is much more likely that you will be crushed under some rubble while pocketing treasure in order to teach the main character a lesson on greed. 107. In the event that you failed to comply with the beginning of Rule 106, and you and a friend are now hanging for dear life over a chasm in the collapsing floor with the treasure you were looking for nearby/just out of arms reach, don't reach for the artifact/treasure. Grab the friend/companion's hand and pull them up (or be pulled up if you are the one dangling). If you reach for the artifact/treasure, you will likely die in order to teach a lesson as previously mentioned in Rule 106. Otherwise, if you do somehow manage to grab it and then leave your friend to die, you guarantee that your friend will not only survive, but will come back in some later adventure where you will inevitably receive your comeuppance by dying. 108. In the event you are in a group of people traveling in a dark/dangerous area, always strive to travel in the front-half middle of the group. This maximizes your relative safety, since it ensures that you will not be one of the people in the back who mysteriously disappear as a result of some deadly silent monster, while at the same time protecting you from being one of the people that gets caught in the death trap/ambush in the front. As an additional bonus, this placement gives you the optimal position to run from threats.

  36. Sanderson is telling a smaller story than he created. I think that's what you're feeling. He's intentionally leaving things out to both keep the books accessible and to provide more fodder for what is planned as two 5 book series. This creates plotting issues like "wtf happened to Jasnah through WOR?" and "Why don't we know how Shallan first bonded Pattern?" and "why did Moash suddenly go nihilist?" The answers to thr first two are: If we knew those things, we would have to know too much that BS wants to reveal later on. The answer to the last is: Odium was successful with Moash exactly where he failed with Dalinar; he convinced Moash to join his team, which, as a god, results in a pretty powerful shift in one's Spirit Web. In any case, different readers are going to react to these holes in different ways. I love them because they provide so many ways to use my own imagination to fill in the gaps, allowing my mind to create a world that I'd otherwise wait for the author to do. The world I create may not be the one revealed later, but that's even more fun.

  37. I think we really don't have enough information about soulcasters to figure out how they are made and the means by which they work, you make a good point about the in world belief in repairing soulcasters and how this seems to be a commonly held belief that it is possible. Thinking about this some more, I started thinking about the broken Davar family soulcaster, which obviously hasn't been repaired yet, but I think it's an interesting case to look at in more depth. Here's the scene were Jushu discovers the broken Davar soulcaster: I think there are 3 possible cases for why the broken Davar soulcaster is not currently working Because the gem was cracked. If this is the case the actual apparatus of the soulcaster is irrelevant, soulcasters are just like other fabrials, and the Ardentia is guarding the secret that the gems that are used to soulcast have trapped non-Radiant spren. Possible explanation for the sequestering of Soulcasters (the people). Because a link in the chain of the soulcaster was broken. This could be some mundane reason like the chain needs to be a certain alloy to work properly (and Shallan used the wrong type of metal when she tried to get it fixed), or it could be a more arcane reason like there is an esoteric process that is involved in fixing a broken soulcaster. I think that we have too little information about soulcasters for the idea of them being made of Cultivation's god metal to be anything more than an improbable but interesting speculation. The Davar soulcaster never broke, because like Jasnah's it's a fake. This is possibly the most interesting case, which raises 3 distinct possibilities: Luesh, the Davar house steward and member of the Ghostbloods could soulcast without using a soulcaster. While this may well be the least plausible of the possibilities, it is interesting to note that after his death he was examined well enough to find his ghostblood tatoo but there was no mention of his body discorporating into a different substance. This could be because the length of time that he had been soulcasting wasn't long enough for this savanthood effect to show up, or it could be that he was able to soulcast by some other means. The supposed soulcast marble deposits were just the explanation used for other Veden houses for Lin Davar's changed fortunes when in fact it was really just the Ghostbloods funneling money to the Davar house. The reason for the subterfuge ties in with the reason for the subterfuge behind the next possibility. The soulcaster pulled from Lin's corpse was a swapped in fake soulcaster. In this case, Luesh could have been using a real soulcaster, but the fake soulcaster could have been planted. I think that it's interesting to note that Jushu, the problem gambler and most likely most easily manipulated Davar was the one to retrieve the soulcaster from his dead father. The ghostbloods, who's power comes from information, who knew quite a lot about what the skybreakers were doing, probably suspected that Shallan was a proto-radiant because of the circumstances of the death of her mother. Also, they might have influenced her decision to seek out Jasnah in an effort to maneuver one of their assassins in close enough to Jasnah to be a true threat. So whether the subterfuge involved faking sales of marble that never existed (and hence was never soulcast), or whether the subterfuge was simply making Shallan believe that she owed them a new soulcaster, the primary motive for the ghostbloods for either of these possibilities would have been to manipulate Shallan.

  38. I would absolutely hate it if that was the case, and I'm glad we know it's not. I read my books for escapism, and if it was linked back into reality that would ruin the entire thing for me. Breaking the fourth wall can work but I don't think it would in this case. I personally think meta stuff like breaking the fourth wall is stupid, even from an objective standpoint I can't see any reason to do it, other than in a less serious comedic sense, such as in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

  39. So I was reading through the new WOBs from Jordancon 10 and I noticed this interesting little titbit in an otherwise pretty innocuous WOB. Did we know this or is this new?

  40. Alright - a month late, but I've finally found time to put together a short retrospective. My thoughts immediately post game can be found towards the end of the Nalthis doc, where I ended up participating in quite a long discussion. But this is the official bit. How did this game work? Well, compared to previous Shard Games, I think that by and large, this game has been the most balanced of the lot, in terms of balancing the different factions against each other from game start. The player count made deciding on a team size for Hoid/Khriss rather difficult - 2 conversions apiece meant precariously small teams, but 3 conversions apiece meant a game that was practically unwinnable for the village, especially when the likelihood of Shardic conversion was added into the mix. In retrospect, I think that Shards should have required more effort to release from containment. The ease of releasing Shards significantly changed the dynamics I was hoping for. How about the Shardic Win Conditions? Autonomy was probably too easy. That got an easy fix for future games - "have aspects + autonomy outnumber living players." As a replacement win con, it's elegant, simple, and reasonably balanced. Ruin might have been too easy as well - but that one is a rough balance between making it possible and making it inevitable. I think that letting Autonomy's aspects or Khriss's invested Shards makes the win con reasonable. The others were fun but not extremely impactful. Endowment was potentially unbalanced, but part of that was just how few kills ended up getting used. Ruin (without even getting converted) decided to blow up worlds instead of using kills, and started by getting rid of the world that let you use stolen investiture for a kill. The lynch failed a couple of days in a row, and none of the players who were given roles that could potentially kill wanted to use them - I think this community has an aversion to using vig kills for some reason. On paper, the amount of potential kills and the amount of potential protects seemed alright. But the way it turned out in practice, it didn't end up that way. A possibility to prevent such a thing would be to limit Endowment to a single Returned at a time - if they Return a second player, the first floats away forever. That could incentivize Returned to use their suicide ability, too - to get some utility out of their death instead of going gentle into the good night whenever Endowment wants to bring another one back. So, @Sart, a bunch of your analysis was correct. With most of the players with kills available not using them, and Endowment able to Return someone every night, the game could have dragged on forever. Instead it ended in a sudden death win con that nobody knew about, but frankly, that wasn't too much better. A lot of that wasn't inherent in game design, though - it was emergent behavior that came out of this specific constellation of players. I'd love to run this game again, with a few fixes. Maybe I'll try it again if the next Shard game ends up in a resolution that makes sense for the story. Anyways, it was fun (if stressful) for me, and I hope it was fun for the rest of you all as well! See you around these parts.

  49. For me, it's gotta be Wax and Steris. I love how Brandon took a character who was socially awkward and wove the story so that it was believable that she could be a romantic lead, and how her quirks actually helped the "good guys" win. She tries so hard and is so dear, and it's just so cool that the hero sees that and comes to love her in her own right, not just an arranged marriage. For any relationship, not just romantic, I'd say Dalinar's love for his two sons, and how we've seen that develop.

  50. Why did the one armed Herdazian man lose the bar fight? He was disarmed, of course! What do you call a Herdazian girl with one arm and one leg? Eileen! Where do one armed Herdazians go to do their shopping? The second hand store! Okay, that's all I've got, I'm stumped. I'll leave now
