  2. Hey! I finished all the Cosmere books in November after starting my quest with Way of Kings in March 2017. I'm friends with @RippleGylf and she pointed me towards the forum. I look forward to swapping theories and memes with all of you and becoming more and more of a Sanderfan. My official position is that I'm neutral on Shalladin vs Shadolin but honestly I think that Shadolin is a much more stable relationship. Also, who thought those ship names were a good idea?

  3. This thread is the gift that keeps on giving. But being absent for a few weeks is a terrible idea. I've caught up on the dozen or more pages I missed but it's hard to sum up all the thoughts I have now, but here goes. On Adolin's wasted potential: there was some interesting discussion here. I get the argument that Brandon's intention has always been for Adolin to be a secondary character and a straightforward "normal guy." I don't follow that line of thinking to accept that as a good explanation for we don't get a clearer understanding or sense of emotional depth from Adolin's feelings for Shallan. The thing is I don't even accept lack of pages as a good reason for some missed opportunities on Adolin overall. For a secondary character he actually does have far more page time than anyone other than the main three characters. At the same time I have some hope that there will be more payoff for Adolin in the future. For some reason Brandon has chosen to give Adolin the page time he has, and if he really has no more significant arc in mind for him, why even make him a viewpoint character at all? On Adolin's character flaws, overall I agree with the idea that none are really well developed. The main flaw that is clearly introduced in the beginning is Adolin's issues with relationships. I don't think womanizer is an accurate term to describe him. I don't think he has intentions to use women, but I also question how serious he is about a long term relationship for his own sake vs societal and family expectations. His heart doesn't really seem in it although the failures do get to him and that probably adds some incentive to finally make one work, especially once he is with Shallan who he sees as exceptional and does at least have some genuine liking and attraction for (what she allows him to see anyway). I would really expect there to be some stakes for Adolin when he talks to Shallan about giving her up, but we didn't get it (for no good reason) and so the most obvious explanation is that Adolin really is looking to get out at that point. But as others so astutely pointed out, she ropes him back in the most effective way possible by appealing to him to help her. Given who Adolin is and the pressure both internal and external he probably feels to make it work, it would be very hard for him to insist on walking away at that point, though I really wish he had. As for any other flaws I'm not really convinced by a lot of the arguments that have him as extreme in any quality. He seems middle of the road to me on a lot of the potential issues that were raised. Especially when it comes to perceptiveness, I think he did miss some important moments of Shallan not being okay, while he does much better with Renarin, so I don't really see this a character defining quality for good or bad. There was some fascinating information shared from beta readers and the WoB on Shallan's masks. Unfortunately these kinds of tidbits worry me the most for the overall sense that maybe Brandon and the majority of readership has a very different perspective than I on the ending of this arc in OB. I go back and forth with feeling like I better prepare myself for being very disappointed with where things go from here and feeling really encouraged by moments of what appear to be clear symbolism such as Shallan sitting/standing at key moments. I do worry about my bias affecting how I read things. I'm still early in my reread and trying to really keep an open mind and pay attention to impressions as well as details. i think the thing that would disappoint me the most is having to accept that Shallan's choice to marry Adolin (or anyone, wouldn't have been okay with Kaladin at that point either) at the time and under the circumstances she does was a healthy choice we should celebrate. I couldn't agree more that having Shallan supposedly recognize her true self because Adolin squeezes her hand at the right time and then marrying him because without him she loses her true self ("fades") is deeply troubling. There was great discussion about accepting support from romantic partners vs relying on them to make your crucial decisions. And I agree that the former is wonderful and realistic but the latter takes away agency from the character and is not something I want to see being portrayed as healthy. I would also be disappointed not to see further exploration of Shallan's response to Helaran, but on that I would be shocked if we don't see more. Her repressing those thoughts were so clear and really highlights how important that actually is to her. All the more reason for her to push all of her feelings for Kaladin into a personality that can deal with it. Between Jasnah, Adolin and Helaran it's really no wonder that she does. Finally, I firmly believe we will see a stress in the bond with Pattern explored in the next book, similar to what happened with Kaladin and Syl. Her lies multiplied and deepened in this book and we haven't seen the consequences for that yet. I certainly hope and don't really believe she will kill him. I hopes this is what causes her to embrace her full/true self and level up.

  4. I felt that "Oathbringer wasn't as good and here's why" got a little carried away for a while. I get that some people are going to feel that way about it. But the amount of effort that went into explaining how/why/what could have been better when we know some 70 talented people gave serious input during the books development...I think it's safe to say that all these angles were discussed before publication. "Did anyone else notice this thing that bugged me" is a pet peeve of mine because I always figure there's a good reason it's the way it is. Maybe I'm just giving Brandon too much credit...but he's earned it, in my opinion.

  5. It was only when he was alone that Valens found himself slumping down against the wall, his legs giving way beneath him. He drew his knees up against his chest. Nils was dead. She had to be. He'd seen the others as they'd dragged her away, and she hadn't even turned out to be a Ministry plant. She'd been loyal all along, and he'd...he hadn't been able to bring himself to trust her. He couldn't help it, now. He looked down at his hands--clenched and unclenched his fists. Why were they shaking? He couldn't seem to make them stop. Too many memories flooded his mind: the way Nils smiled; the way it cut through him like a knife, that particular amused set of her shoulders, her grace, her laugh... He knew he hadn't brought this down on her, knew they hadn't been anything to each other for a long time. They were friends now, he'd agreed. Just friends. Your name in my heart. Always. Even now. Why did it hurt so much? Once you let love into your heart, it seemed love didn't always choose to leave. You couldn't stop loving someone, just because you'd decided or agreed to. The heart had a will of its own. They'd taken her, but he couldn't find it in himself to hate the others. They needed to find the Ministry plants, or they'd be dead themselves. They were doing what they were supposed to, what Valens himself had been doing. Except... he hesitated. The last few voices in favour of Nils's being taken to Breeze had come at the very end, almost as if... No, he told himself. This made no sense. After all, Mon had died, killed by the infiltrators among them. And what did the Ministry's plants care about forcing the death of one of Breeze's crew? Surely since there had been argument over whom to suspect, they need only sit back and watch events unfolding. But he didn't know, and that was the rub, and now the risk haunted him. There was no joy in him, now, and in any case, he could not Riot himself, nor did he desire to. Instead, Valens buried his head in his hands, and wept like a beaten child. 8. Cryptics aren't like Honorspren so I don't think they have a problem with oathbreaking. That being said I don't think they would give her a second chance unless they were looking for more data points to form a hypothesis on human-spren relations or something vaguely scientific as that. I find it really doubtfull, though. No, I don't believe they would send her another cryptic, provided that cryptic would even want to go, if she killed Pattern. Not to mention it would be a bad plotting choice to show higher level spren as expendable. Bonding one is supposed to be a big matter, so losing one should be as well. That would be undercut by replacing one with a simple dispatch from the cryptics. I agree. That's really unlikely. I think that Hoid could kind of lightweave even without a Cryptic as that was part of the magic system from his home planet or something (I think there's a WoB about it out there but my WoB-fu is terrible). Also I think he was using lightweaving when he told Kaladin that story about Wandersail back in tWoK. So why would he need a cryptic? To be able to soulcast. Hoid has his own plans and goals, so this somehow might fit into them (might not but in any case soulcasting is a useful skill). Those take priority over everyone and everything. He told Dalinar that he'd watch Roshar burn with tears in his eyes if he had to. So I don't think so that he'd go against his plans even for Shallan's sake. I don't know what everyone means by over but here's what I mean. I think the triangle ended when Shallan made a choice and was semi-honest about her feeling for Kaladin and decided to ingore them. But I do believe that Shallan's and Adolin's marriage can and might run into issues and that a relationship between Kaladin and Shallan can still happen. It's pretty clear that both had feelings for each other, but those feelings where dealt with so unconvincingly at the end OB and so many things are hinted at and foreshadowed, as has been shown within this very thread, that it can't be the end because why would the author bother to set all those things up. And things are being set up. So what I mean is that the triangle, or at least the possibility of it, is over is that for a triangle to exist both relationships should be manifesting simultaneously, which I believe means that you're right and there never was much of a triangle. I don't believe this will happen, that there would be infidelity. Or that Kaladin would be fine with that. If a relatioship between Kaladin and Shallan is to happen, then her marriage will need to have ended by then. And what I'm saying is that the portnents for such events to transpire are there. Let me know if my elaboration on the matter is adequate enough.

  10. On my way to work this morning I was thinking of just how funny and, pardon the pun, witty Hoid is, especially in WoK's. He's one of the few characters iv'e read in any series that almost always makes me laugh out loud while also making me look deeper into his words to find the meaning behind them. Anyone have some favorite quotes or scenes with him? I work in the medical field and this one I hold near and dear to my heart.... “I like to live every day like it's my last."Shallan nodded."And by that I mean lying in a puddle of my own urine, calling for the nurse to bring me more pudding.”

  12. That's from Oathbringer (the book) right after Dalinar returns Oathbringer (the sword) to Ialai and learns that Amaram is to be the new Highprince Sadeas. Daliar's actual reaction was to have his feelings hurt and leave abruptly. Here's what he should have said: "Storms, Amaram, you've figured it out! You may be the first to ever figure that out! Would you like a... I don't know, a ribbon? A pat on the head? Both of my sons are pretty bright, you see, so I don't actually know what the customary reward is for a slightly slow child who has managed to solve a riddle of middling difficulty. Yes, I have done terrible things. I have killed and burned and ended innocent lives the length and breadth of Alethkar. And in so doing, I have amassed power and prestige which I have no intention of giving up now. It's all true. You want to talk about what morality is and isn't, Meridas? Morality isn't a footrace. You don't get extra points for being less vile than the next man. When we die, the being who weighs our souls isn't going to compare the reading to a ledger of those who came before. I am disgusted by the man I was, but I will use him. I will use his reputation and his ill-gotten gains to stop other people from falling to his level, if I can. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite, maybe just a fool. But I am too busy trying to save the world to worry about that just now. "Enjoy your new title, and your shards. Enjoy swinging around the corpse of a being once bonded to a better person than you will ever be." (Mostly I hate it when people treat "you're a hypocrite!" like a super-duper sick burn. Essentially they're saying "I accept your stated position on what is right and wrong, and rather than debate that, I am going to point out that you don't live up to your standards either." I think hypocrisy might actually be morally neutral! Whatever bad thing you're doing is bad, but saying it's bad doesn't make it worse.)

  13. WARNING: Contains spoilers for Warbreaker, Mistborn and Elantris. Okay, so there are two different ideas I've been thinking about, and I want to try and combine them in one thread, just because they're vaguely related and I don't want to make different threads. First of all, I've been thinking about which ability we've seen so far (Allomancy, Surgebinding, etc.) would be the most valuable to a Wordhopper in the lager cosmere. Although I don't often think of Awakening as a very powerful ability, I've started to think that it might be the most useful to a Worldhopper, because unlike most of the other abilities we've seen, it doesn't require a constant source of energy. If you're an Allomancer, you need to carry with you a little sack full of metal vials everywhere you go (which could run out), and if you're a Surgebinder you need to constantly have access to Stormlight. Awakening, however, does not require a constant source of energy - you always have the same amount of Breath with you, no matter how often you use it. This also allows characters like Azure/Vivenna to easily conceal their identity as a Worldhopper - she doesn't have to constantly be sneaking around, asking for "more metal" or "more spheres," because she always has a consistent supply of Breath with her. The only other power I can think of that does not require a constant source of energy is Feruchemy, and even then I think Awakening would be more useful to a Worldhopper, because Feruchemy requires you to inconveniently "store" senses constantly before you can amplify them, while Awakening does not. And AonDor (I think that's what it's called) on Sel would also not be very helpful to a Worldhopper, because you have to be on Sel for it to work (since it's based on geography). On a different (but slightly related) note, how would Surgebinding work in the larger cosmere? I feel like it may be the most powerful cosmere ability, but the problem is that it requires a constant supply of Stormlight, which is a serious downside. I ask this because while I was debating what was the most powerful Worldhopping ability, I decided that it might be Elsecalling, because the Surge of Transportation allows you to travel into the Cognitive Realm and back. Assuming that this Surge works on other planets, this could be a huge asset to Worldhoppers - they wouldn't have to sneak around Perpendicularities to enter the Physical Realm. If Jasnah became a Worldhopper (which I really want to happen), she could travel to the CR and back whenever she pleased. However, the problem is that Elsecalling requires a constant supply of Stormlight, which Jasnah would surely run out of within a week or so if she left Roshar. So to summarize my two thoughts: What do you think would be the most powerful ability to a Worldhopper? Do you agree that it would be Awakening? Would Elsecalling possibly be the most powerful ability to a Worldhopper, because it allows access to the CR? And how would Elsecallers and other Surgebinders get around the problem of having to carry large amounts of slowly-fading Stormlight wherever they go?

  15. I don't spend much time on shipping threads - just not my thing. I'm happy to wait & see who Brandon puts together. If a thread goes too far into theorizing future SA books, I'll stop reading it because to me it feels like fan-fic, and once again I want to wait for Brandon's "canon" story. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad folks have fun theorizing (I have some too & keep them in my head), and I get that posting to the forums adds to their enjoyment. But there've been times where someone's theory turned out to be a spoiler and ... I just don't want anything to spoil this wonderful story for me, ever, at all. If a thread starts having a negative or critical tone (not often, but occasionally happens), I'll stop reading and go elsewhere. Finally, I'm blessed with a really good memory, and if a Shard-er has posted rants, here or elsewhere with the same user name, I'll remember and tend to skip over what they post. Ranting is cathartic for the rant-er, but I personally don't find it entertaining to read - too much other great content out there!

  16. @Llarimar, I agree with @Andy92’s comments about Mistborn. I don’t think finding metals is a problem. Ensuring purity and the proper alloy mix could be, but a Worldhopping Mistborn really should know basic metallurgy… Imagine a Full Twinborn like Marsh with an adequate metal supply! Off-Roshar Surgebinding might not work even with Stormlight. Brandon says spren themselves lose capacity if they move beyond Roshar. Awakening is interesting: My opinion: 1. If a Nalthian Worldhops with vats of Nalthian dye and huge numbers of Breaths, they would be formidable. 2. If spren could travel, Surgebinders might be scary. 3. But I’d bet on the Metalborn. Preservation gives Metalborn the ability to preserve themselves anywhere. If the cosmere resembles our universe, metals are its most common substance. A Worldhopping Metalborn has ample fuel for a serious ruckus whosever gin joint she walks into.

He's not coming back. So the tie to the blade has been completely severed. Where ever Jezrien has gone, the blade can't follow.

  21. So? That quote is the first time I have come across that particular idea said in that particular way. It made a lot of sense to me and I really like it. There are people who see Shallan and Adolin as set in stone since they are married now. I have been trying to image Shallan and Adolin are happy together forever and that Shallan and Kaladin are never going to happen. I am really struggling with this. I don't see how Adolin can really help Shallan unless he knows where her problems are coming from. Shallan would have to tell Adolin about killing her parents and her childhood. It might happen and it might not. We do not know. So far there are no signs that she will. I have been thinking that Shallan's brothers will help Shallan heal. It was mentioned earlier in the thread that Shallan saying it's alright to be happy is a step forward for her. I don't agree. This is exactly what Shallan has always done. Early in OB she says the key to happiness wasn't clinging to one moment but ensuring many future happy moments. She has always worked toward her own happiness. She has always wanted to be happy and not feel pain. I don't see a change in Shallan from early in OB to the end of OB. Whereas I really liked Kaladin struggling and failing to say his fourth ideal. I am really frustrated that Shallan's non-progress is celebrated as great leaps forward. Shallan's arc seemed to end on a really happy note and I feel like she did not make any progress. ETA: It feels weirdly like Shallan's sub arc of "which man should I choose" is treated like her main arc, when surely her main arc is her progress as a knight radiant. As a knight radiant I do not feel she has progressed

  23. I should have mentioned this before, but I just want to be clear that attacking other people isn't allowed. No one here is doing that. People are certainly allowed to have their opinions. People are allowed to really want to talk about Shalladin, people are allowed to not want to do that. I think this thread is all in good taste and there's no malice involved on anything, but I just wanted to make that clear. People are entitled to opinions and we don't want to silence them. There's a difference between going into a thread you aren't interested in and stifling discussion--by saying something like "ugh really why even bother," which is obviously not cool--and saying "this theory keeps popping up and I'm kind of tired of it" in a separate thread. Just like it's very different from saying "wow X person needs to shut up, their ideas are stupid." See the difference? I don't think we should really silence some complaints, as there's a big difference with complaining about ideas versus complaining about people. Let's make sure this thread doesn't go past that. It's totally cool people love the A/S/K thread. It's also fine for people to think that it goes in circles. I think those are valid opinions that are allowed to be voiced and no one here is attacking people on either side there. Of course, this thread is about more than that, but I just wanted to make that clear.

  24. Always and forever: The Tower. The best scene of the series for me, easily, and I doubt it will get topped. The moment where Kaladin gives up his best chance at freedom to go rescue the hated lighteyes. Where he realizes that he needs to be more like his father and be the one to make the first move. And then Syl telling him what she is, and asking if she brings Honor or is just attracted to it. I get chills every time, even just writing about it here.

The previous ones all died off during the Recreance, so the current ones are splinters of Honor. The second part is that the Older Spren were of H&C to begin with, because of.. Realmatic Technicalities. Splintering is reversible. This doesn't mean anyone is currently capable of doing so, or if they know how to, but it's theoretically doable.

  40. I think that we are wrong in assuming that there will be new Heralds. As was pointed out earlier, the Oathpact doesn't work. Instead I think that there will be 10 new Champions of Honor, individuals directly connected to Honor, but not bound to the Oathpact. I would propose the following individuals for these roles: Kaladin (replacing Jezrien) Szeth (replacing Nale) Lift (replacing Vedel) Shallan (replacing Shalash) Jasnah (replacing Battar) Venli (replacing Kalak) Taln Navani (replacing Ishar) Shalash (replacing Chanarach) Renarin (replacing Pailiah) Questionable: Shalash, Shallan, Renarin, Venli So where is Dalinar? He has replaced Honor and is supplying the Champions with Investiture directly. Crazy theory, I know, but that's where my head is at.

  41. Everybody knew the dice were loaded. Everybody rolled with their fingers crossed. Valens wasn't rolling dice, though he moodily rolled a clip over his knuckles and between his fingers. His beer sat in front of him, mostly untouched. "Oh, come on," said Roark, who was on his fifth beer by now. "Sure, you bungled it up, but there're plenty of fish in the sea." Valens just shot him a look, and carried on playing with the clip. “You win some, you lose some.” Roark clapped him on the shoulder. “C’mon, there are better things to be doing than moping about in a hole like this.” People lost things in places like Kengold’s. If you were lucky, all you lost were your boxings. Valens knew someone who’d lost his liver in Kengold’s. Still, the alcohol was cheap, and harsh enough to peel paint, which entailed that it was good enough for Valens to drown some memories that didn’t bear carrying. “I like it here.” “Lord Ruler,” Roark muttered. “You’re wallowing.” “Seems to me I’m entitled to some…” Valens flipped the coin, made it disappear down Roark’s left coat-pocket. “Wallowing.” “There’s wallowing, and then there’s pathetic, and then there’s ‘we could turn this into one of those ten-boxing plays’,” retorted Roark. “You know ‘em, the sort of rust that only sells ‘cause they’ve packed the place with Soothers and Rioters.” Valens sighed. “You’ve made your point.” “Finally. So let’s get out of this rusting place already, and—” “Nah,” Valens said. “I’m staying. I think this place is starting to grow on me.” He produced another clip and began to fidget with it again. Roark had a catalogue of sighs and expressions. This particular one, Valens recognised as a combination of ‘Valens-you’re-too-rusting-stubborn’ and ‘Valens-she-isn’t-worth-it’ and ‘Valens-being-your-friend-is-so-rusting-hard-sometimes.’ He knew that. But it didn’t make that little gnawing wyrm of hurt and shame go away. After all wasn’t there that Erikell who’d written that reason was the slave to the passions? - Too much RP for a sign-up? This one seems so sparse :/ Either way, Valens has love-life problems and figures this might be just the thing. Edited for formatting + swapping a bit of background.

  42. I despise Amaram, and I find his excuse of "the greater good" weak. He insists that all the evil things he did were okay because they were for a good overall purpose, and refuses to admit that the bad things he did were even bad. I'm glad he's gone.

  45. I don't think Kaladin fights because of the system or Lighteyes - if you look he defends people who don't deserve to die. He sees the individual behind the color of their eyes, be it human or listeners. That's one point I can't stand with Moash - his thinking in categories. He was hurt as a child, coming back with his uncle and finding his grandparents dead, but he projects this on every lighteye. The same in OB - this one episode with the brightlord and his minions and for him every human is corrupt.

  46. My own take at "Law" by Nale There, out in the darkness Spren are returning Returning to men Those fallen from grace The Law be my witness I never shall yield Till we come face to face With my Blade in their chests They learn the way of the oaths Mine is the way of the Law Those who trust in the law of the righteous Shall have their reward And if they cause the Voidbringer’s return, The screams The flames! Laws In their perfection Strengthening my mind Filling the darkness With order and light You are my sentinels For you are truth Keeping me on my path Keeping guilt from my heart We know our place in the sky We hold our course and our aim And for the Radiants Serve their sentence And its always the same For they have fell, as the Radiants fell Now fall by Blaaaaaaaaaaade! And so it must be, for so it is written By the Herald of Heralds That those who might cause mankind’s fall Must pay the price! Oh, let me find them That I may see them Lawfully deaaaaaaaaad I will never rest Till then This I swear This I swear by the Law!!!!!!!!!!!1
