  1. @Pinnacle-Ferring AND I ARE ENGAGED!!!!!!! Basically we've known for a while that we wanted to do this. We went a couple days ago and picked out a ring (with a sapphire because Ravenclaw colours. Its really pretty!). So we met up in the morning and bought the ring. Then we went to see Wonder Woman (it was amazing too). So we were having a discussion about proposing over post-movie lunch but I wanted to wear the ring already and we decided ok, lunch. So while we're walking to the cinema I get an important phone call. I put the phone down and realised he looked really nervous, so I was like, ok, he's decided to propose now. So he says "Wasing the you in the giving of the me all of the happies and fuzzies. Ising the wanting of spending the life of the me with the you. Willing of the you of the marrying of the me?" and pulled out a white handkerchief. (Took me a minute to get the Spook reference. I have failed you all :P) And then I said to him "Will you be my Right Hand Man?" And he gave me the ring. And we walked off grinning to go see Wonder Woman because #nerdlove.

  3. Cycle 4: A Changeling for a Change NOTE: @The Flash wrote his own death write-up, I only did a little light editing to it. If you feel like giving an upvote for the writeup, I have given permission to Flash to post a single non-game related post in the thread down below in order to receive your upvotes (and you really should). Bracken sat, despairing of ever finding the one true meaning of life. This last book had declared 42 to be the answer to life, and then was unable to support what question it was the answer to! It seemed like all these books were here to foil his purpose behind replacing an unimportant librarian pony. He had always sympathized with the ponies, and the Queen figured that would be helpful in staying hidden. The issue was that he hated being a changeling. He always had thought it was a disadvantage in trying to accomplish something worthwhile in life. And that is why he needed to find the meaning of life here. So that he would know why he was here, and what he needed to do to feel worthwhile. "Um, Bracken?" Said Wormy suddenly. "Earlier I was talking to some ponies about recognizing suspicious behavior..." "Yes?" Asked Bracken, a sense of impending doom growing within him. Wormy took a deep breath. "And I mentioned the strange sympathy for the changelings you have, and the fact that you always talk as if you were separate from the rest of the ponies... And they thought that was suspicious." "You think I'm a changeling" accused Bracken, as he turned another page. "Yes." Sighed Wormy, with some finality. "Well, you're right. But I don't want to hurt anyone, and I've been your friend, right? So there is no need to tell anyone." Wormy looked pained. ".... yes, you have been my friend. Perhaps more than the actual Bracken was. But it is too late for that." "Wh- UMPHHH" as Bracken was tackled from behind by several ponies that had hidden themselves. His head slammed against the ground, and he only had a moment to consider his failure before he lost consciousness. He awoke in the creepy Zebra's hut. All the ponies were there, and Wormy- oh, Wormy- sat on princess Luna's back. His eye watered slightly. He had considered the small bookworm to be a true friend. "You have confessed to be a changeling. Yet, we must have you take the potion." Said princess Luna. The ponies moved forward to force the potion down his throat. "No! Wait, I'll take it willingly if you just let me say a few things. Or if you don't make me take it, I can tell you where the rest of my kind are, I just need to finish my work..." pleaded Bracken. Princess Luna considered, then conceded. "We cannot trust you not to sabotage us. You will take the potion. But I will allow you to say a few things. What a changeling could have to say, I do not know." The ponies backed off a bit. "Ok. So..." Bracken trailed on, looking at the ponies who had become his friends, who stared back now with eyes of disgust. "I'm so sor-" And it hit him. He comprehended life. "I... understand" breathed Bracken, full of wonder at the beauty of life's meaning. "Understand what?" Asked Princess Luna, confused by his change in direction. "The meaning of life. You shouldn't judge me by how I began, or how I end. It is only by the journey that I took that I should be judged. I was never happy with the rest of the changelings, because they did not appreciate me for who I am. Even if I did work against you, the time I spent with you was the best time of my life. It made my journey become worthwhile. The meaning of life is to find joy in the journey of life. And the joy that I gained from being your friend and working among you... It gives me the courage I need to do what I need to do." Bracken ended in a whisper, looking as Wormy. No one said anything as he bravely took the potion directly from the pot. There was only a cry of despair from a small bookworm as Bracken collapsed. The smoke swirled, revealing the image of a changeling, and with a flash of green light Bracken's unconscious form on the floor transformed to match the image in the air. The smoke began to fade away, but before it dissipated completely the image of the changeling seemed to shift, perhaps showing a kinder looking changeling, something more colorful and beautiful than the traditional changeling? The crowd of ponies murmured slightly, for this was not what they had expected. Princess Luna soothed the bookworm. "Perhaps there was more to this particular changeling than we judge them by. Sadly, there are still those among us who are changelings, and they will not be as... unique... as Bracken was. Be vigilant." As the ponies dispersed, Zecora finally spoke: "Perhaps the changelings can be shown leniency, if they too can suppress their evil tendencies." Princess Luna bowed her head slightly. "For now, we need to expell them from the village. But one day... maybe something can be done. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to take the changeling to the castle, and the bookworm to a new home." Deep thoughts prevented the sleep of most ponies in the village that nignt, thoughts upon the meaning of life. Schitzo waited until well after night had fallen before he dared venture into the Doctor's office. Other ponies went to the Doctor's during the daytime, which is exactly why he waited until night. Ponies who went to see the Doctor were usually sick, which means that they were contagious, and what if Schitzo caught whatever they had? In fact, he was beginning to wonder if he might have already caught something just by sitting in the waiting room. Was his throat starting to feel a little scratchy? Did noises sound a little muffled in his left ear? He was about to bolt for the exit when the nurse stepped into the waiting room. "The doctor will see you now, Schitz'." Schitzo took a could deep breaths to calm himself, then followed the nurse back to the office. "The doctor will be in momentarily," The nurse said. "Thanks for your patience. It's been a busy day, there has been a pandemic of ponies getting pounced on lately." Did she say pandemic? Is "getting pounced on" contagious??? Schitzo fretted over that so hard that when the door opened up he blurted out, "Oh thank goodness you're here doctor. I'm coming down with the pony pox again along with strep throat and my left ear has gone deaf and I'm 99% sure that somepony is going to pounce on me any sec-" He cut off as he saw the doctor pony's cutie mark out of the corner of his eye- it was a stethescope, identical to Schitzo's own cutie mark. Come to think of it, the Doctor's fur was the same color as Schitzo's. So was his tail. Schitzo's gaze drifted up to the Doctor's face, which was also identical to Schitzo's own face. Before Schitzo could utter a peep, the changeling pounced... The Flash was lynched! He was a Changeling! Jondesu was kidnapped! He was a Regular Village Pony! Vote Tally: The Flash (7): Jondesu, Hemalurgic Headshot, Paranoid King, Seonid, BrightnessRadiant, Ecthelion III, Alvron Hemalurgic Headshot (0): Bridge Boy Quiver (2): The Flash, Conatus Player List Sorry again about the great delay getting this cycle posted. 5. Day 2: Shipping Disputes Beet Asper was annoyed. His contact hadn't showed in days. Lord Ruler, what did it take to get reliable suppliers in this country town. It was almost like there was a manor-wide crackdown on Allomantic metals or something. He hated moving out here from Luthadel. But tonight, he was hopeful. Just maybe, his contact would show and he'd be able to get some metals for his buyers. They were almost starting to think he was holding out on them, and that certainly wouldn't be healthy. And when you'd been around as long as he had, you learned to value your health. A dark shape moved under the nearby tree. Beet almost jumped, before realizing that he was waiting for just that sort of thing. He called out. "Lord Ruler, man. You nearly killed me. Maybe give a guy a little warning next time before you just sneak up on him." The plain looking man stepped out of the shadows. "Only almost? Pity. Guess I'll have to try again." His hand flickered and something glinted. Beet had just enough time to realize that it wasn't his contact before the glass dagger took him in the throat. As he gasped his last breaths, his killer walked over, joined by another figure, hooded and cloaked. "Sloppy work. You might have given our whole operation away." The first assassin might have said something back to defend himself. But if he did, Beet Asper never knew. ------------------------------------------ Day 2 has begun! 8. I just want to start my post off with an apology for my inactivity thus far. I have been having a hard time lately, because I had to find a new home for the dog I have raised for the last seven years. I finally sent her to a new home the day before yesterday, and I have been really upset about it. I will do my best to be more active from now on, and try and give my thoughts and opinions on the discussion. -- Dusted Rose rushed around her shop, flowers flying around in her wake as she wound around making multiple different floral arrangements. They didn't look as good as her arrangements normally did, her skills seemed to have dropped in the last few weeks. "A Changeling was captured, that is cause for celebration!" She mumbled to herself excitedly, putting roses into one of the arrangements to finish it. After she finished it, she picked it up in her magic and trotted to the entrance of her shop, setting it up outside for the rest of Ponyville to see. The rosy unicorn continued her work for a few more hours, making dozens of arrangements to decorate the town with. Once she had finished, she filled her saddlebags with as many flowers as she could, and trotted out of her shop to spread some joy to the other ponies. As she trotted along, flower petals feel behind her, leaving a sweet-smelling trail in her wake. She always enjoyed doing things like that, as it made her easy to follow and find. She wanted everypony to be able to find her easily, should they want to get a floral arrangement from her or anything like that. As she trotted along, she noticed the somewhat intimidating Earth Pony, Ironpies. He was eating one of his cookies, and seemed almost lost in thought? Or maybe he was just contemplating the existence and meaning of life that the Changeling Bracken had put into everyponies minds. Wanting to start spreading joy, Dusted Rose made her way to the Earth Pony and sat down beside him, showering him with flowers as she sat. "Good day to you, Ironpies. Isn't it good news that we managed to get a Changeling this time? Oh, I hope we can keep this going!" She smiles brightly at him, picking up a rose in her magic and offering it to him as she sits there. [ @Hemalurgic_Headshot, wanna rp with me? :p] -- I am not the best at analyzing people for suspicious behavior, when I don't have a baseline for how they act normally, but I will try and provide thoughts this cycle. Again, I am so sorry for how inactive I have been, but I am going to change that inactivity now!

  9. My insurance company has...displeased me. I got Thing on March 15. Insurance is attempting to not cover this particular brand of Thing. The problems with this: 1. Doctor called Insurance company before I got Thing. They were assured this brand of Thing is covered. I have documentation of this. 2. My work's insurance SPD document clearly states that all FDA-approved Things are covered. 3. The ACA states that all FDA-approved Things must be covered. Now it is time to fax in my appeal letter and documentation. Beware, Insurance company, for you are now about to face the wrath of She Who Researches And Documents All. YOUR DOOM IS NIGH.

  10. Well... That happened. Okay, so I took a look back at last cycle as well, trying to find out what happened to change it so suddenly. First up in my remarks, woot! One Changeling down, indeterminate number to go! Glad we didn't lynch BR, though the last time I got on yesterday, I didn't think it was heading that direction. Second, and the main one, HH seemed really desperate last cycle. He switched votes a few times before settling on Flash, who he fingered by saying that he knew Flash was an Elim. Speaking in absolutes like that gets people's attention, and he got the lynch on Flash. Now that ended up being a good thing since Flash was an Elim, but I want to know how you knew he was an Elim. Because either you have Honesty, you are in contact with someone that you absolutely trust that does, or you're an Elim that tossed out his own comrade to save his skin. Or you were bluffing and using an absolute like that to survive. (Insert mandatory only the Sith deal in absolutes quote.) Honestly I do think you're village, but I have my suspicions that it could be otherwise, and am pretty sure that you were desperate last round. So I would like to know how you knew he was a Changeling. And I'll defend myself once you say why you're suspicious of me. Just saying, "I'm village!" won't help me at all. Razor Shard blinked awake, finding himself gazing up at the blank dirty white of the medical tent. After a few more moments, he turned his head to the side, coming nose to nose with a blackened almost skeletal face. Pause. Razor Shard flung himself off the bed on the opposite side of the changeling, trying to put the flimsy cot between him and the enemy while ignoring the dizzy feeling he got from moving too quickly. After a moment of nothing happening, he peeked over to see that the black creature was in a bed like he had been shortly before. It's eyes were closed and the hooves were fastened to the corners of the cot. They'd caught a changeling. They'd finally caught a changeling! Razor Shard suppressed his whoop of joy, not wanting to attract the attention of the nurse from before. Now he was one step closer to finding his father, one step closer to his revenge! Then he realized that since the changeling was in a coma, much like the rest of the ponies who had been fed the potion. Which meant he couldn't press it for information! Boiling with frustration, the feeling of being so close and so far, Razor Shard stalked outside of the tent. Stopping in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the main square, he took a deep breath, bringing in his anger. So he still couldn't find anything out, and the potion caused them to fall into a coma like the rest. Well then, all he had to do was find the next one and interrogate it before the village did. He set off with a happy grin and a dark look in his eyes, heading off into the Everfree forest. It was about time he located that nest.

  11. @The Flash, it was a pleasure to have you in the game. See you in the LG. Ironpies sat in the corner, watching. Watching is what gets you information, that and having the Master tell it to you. The ponies were rejoicing in the defeat of an enemy, a bittersweet moment, as they realized another of their own had been lost. Ironpies was stoic. He had a job to do, any more was a distraction, any less unforgivable. His hoof slowly edged a cookie towards his mouth, where he gave a little nibble.

  13. Spaceflight Of Doom (QF): In the end, the spaceship was sinking like the Titanic. That much was obvious. The question was: who got to escape? Several escape pods were damaged, so not everyone would be making it out alive. The survivors huddled in a group, not knowing where the others were. In the end, a simple plan was decided on. Whomever got the most votes got to leave. They would keep doing that until the ship exploded, or all the escape pods were used up. Unfortunately, not everyone was going to play fair. And there was still the issue of the saboteur. Who would dare challenge the might of the Empire? Setting: Firstborn (a short story by Brandon Sanderson) The Gimmick: In this game, getting voted on is a good thing. The player who has the most votes at the end of a cycle leaves the ship. After a certain number of cycles (determined by number of players) the ship will explode, and anyone left on the ship will die. If there is a tie, no one leaves the ship. Win conditions: Loyal soldiers: Have as many loyal soldiers as possible leave the ship. A straight victory is having half or more of the people who leave be Loyal Soldiers. Saboteur: Leave the ship. When you do, you blow up all the remaining passengers. Down with the Empire! Coward: Leave the ship. It may be the coward's way out, but that's good enough for you.

  14. Prism was back home, painting the moment when they found their first changeling. It was really coming along quite well. She felt a sudden pang of guilt, when she suddenly realized that, if Wormy came in the room, seeing this painting might be very hard for him. She turned her canvas towards the wall, and decided to finish it later. Maybe when Wormy was resting. She was glad that she could give the poor little bookworm a home, after the awful experience he had been through. To find out that your best friend had actually been a changeling? And Wormy was still worried about the real Bracken. He still hadn't been found. At least the changeling had thrown out the white flag at the end. Admitting to his foul play. Maybe he would turn out to be a rare, and friendly changeling. After all, Prism believed that nopony was without hope. Prism started a new painting that wouldn't traumatize her new friend. Her and Razor Shard's first meeting. Not the part where he knocked her down. Or the part where she ignored him, accidentally. The part where he gave her excellent art tips, and she happily took notes on it. Good memories were better than sour ones. ____________________________________________________________ @The Flash asked me to give Wormy a good home in a pm...I figured I would help out the little bookworm. Kindness is always rewarded. Okay so my theories are that there was probably only one evil unicorn, and one of each other kind of pony...but if there are 4 than I would suspect there are possibly two earth or two pegasi elims. Last cycle I thought the elims might be among Flash for the unicorn, Jon or BB for earth, and maybe conatus, Ecth, or Alv for pegasus. Flash is confirmed an elim and gone, and Jon is now confirmed as villager, and gone. That leaves my suspicions on BB for earth, and I'm thinking maybe conatus or Ecth for pegasi since Alv did claim to be the original holder of generosity. (I'm not sure he would have done that if he was evil...it seems too risky to me.) I will join Seonid's vote on Conatus since he's on my suspicions list for now....gotta go eat dinner. I'll be back with reasons for my suspects in a min

  15. Dusted Rose smiled even brighter, "I hope there aren't too many left. I just want life to go back to normal. But that's besides the point." She happily accepts the cookie he offered her, "Oh, thank you! I would love a cookie." She picked the cookie up in her magic and brings it to her mouth, taking a small bite out of it. She smiled happily, eating the cookie as she moved her flowers around her and watched Ironpies. -- @BrightnessRadiant, Oh that is incredibly disconcerting. Did The Flash ever give any hints or anything of the sort of other players that could be elims when you were talking to each other? @Hemalurgic_Headshot, Also, what does IronPies look like again? I really want to draw the two of them together. x3

  19. Okay so I saw a few of the Explain a Film Plot badly things earlier and thought they were funny, so I decided to do them for the cosmere books. I think some of them are funny, so I decided to share them. Hopefully it'll at least get a few laughs. If anyone has any more or any different ones, please post them. Spoilers for the cosmere, obviously. I'll label each one just in case though. The Final Empire: Well of Ascension: Hero of Ages: Alloy of Law: Shadows of Self: Bands of Morning: Warbreaker: Elantris: I couldn't think of any for Stormlight, hopefully someone else can [EDIT by Moderator: This topic originally was solely cosmere but has moved beyond that, so I moved this to Entertainment Discussion.]

  20. A while back, I ran a thread that would feature a different forum member each week. At the request of Mestiv, I am starting a new one. Every week, people will vote for a member to be featured. At the end of the week, the person with the most votes will be sent a PM of questions. I will then post their response to the OP of the thread. Here are the questions/requests: 1. Provide a picture (if you are comfortable with that). 2. Provide your real name (if you are comfortable with that). 3. Which book is your favorite and why? 4. What have been your main contributions to the community? What are you known for? 5. What made you join the forum? 6. How many hours do you spend on the shard on a given day? 7. Describe your fondest Forum experience. 8. What is one thing that Brandon does really well? 9. What is one thing that he could work on? 10. Which fictional character is the best representation of yourself? 11. Any additional comments, whether it be about your life outside of the forum, favorite food, your website, or...anything! As always, ideas for new questions are welcome. Calderis 1. Provide a picture (if you are comfortable with that). No problem. Here's one from Dec. 2009. My profile pic was made by a friend based off this picture. I don't have the piercings anymore, as my son liked to grab shiny things when he was tiny And speaking of my son, here's a more recent one with him This one is from this past December, and my boy is happy and awesome. 2. Provide your real name (if you are comfortable with that). Jon. 3. Which book is your favorite and why? This is hard. This is really hard. The Hobbit for spawning my fantasy addiction... Mistborn TFE for introducing me to Brandon on a random supermarket shelf, and Stormlight Archive for being my current outright favorite. 4. What have been your main contributions to the community? What are you known for? My Limericks thread? My freakish ability to get more rep than I deserve? My self esteem issues? I don't feel like I have a good answer here. 5. What made you join the forum? Well this was apparently my first post from back in 2014 So I guess, I saw people discussing, thought I could help the conversation progress, and didn't see a reason not to. 6. How many hours do you spend on the shard on a given day? I feel uncomfortable answering this question. I don't really know? I access the site exclusively via mobile and a tab is always on the Shard in Chrome. I get free wifi at work... So I guess I'm not on the Shard for the 7 or 8 hours I sleep. Yay addiction! 7. Describe your fondest Forum experience. Honestly, probably the back and forth conversations @Extesian and I get into. It's fun helping flesh out someone else's ideas and vice versa 8. What is one thing that Brandon does really well? Character driven stories. That's why I got hooked right away. 9. What is one thing that he could work on? Focus? It doesn't really bother me, but characters like Lift and Wayne grow larger and larger in his stories because of the fun he has writing them, rather than their importance to the plot. 10. Which fictional character is the best representation of yourself? I have been known to have freakishly good, (and less often freakishly bad) luck. For a few years a couple of friends actually called me Mat. So I guess I have to go with Matrim Cauthon. 11. Any additional comments, whether it be about your life outside of the forum, favorite food, your website, or...anything Other than to thank all of you for making and contributing to the best fan community ever, no.

  21. Okay. Pretty self explanatory title. Warning you, things are going to get weird. And please do not say anything about none of my stuff down there making sence. (I can't spell). Example: When I am bored, I go into the Cosmere. I am a girl of 22 who is really tall and skinny with bright green eyes. Name of Teshani, but prefers Tesh. Red hair, freckles, yah. When I was a girl, aged 8, I ran away. I had rich ligteyed merchants as parents, and i hated my life, blah blah blah. They never found me, and Dalinar took me in, I mean, young lighteyed girl of eight, 4th dahn, obvious target. So yah. I grew up sneaking out to practice with a spear and sword with Adolin, more blahs. When I was 16 I went to the Shattered plains with everyone else. I had always been a tomboy. So, I begged Dalinar to let me fight, he said no, obviously. So the next four years were spent trying to sneak out on a plateau run and practicing. Never worked. Well, except for this one time, but that's a story for another time. But when I was 20, I finally convinced Dalinar to give me a role in the camp as long as I didn't go on any runs. Sub-squad leader. And when Sadeas betrayed Dalinar, I was in the war camp. So I lived, and when I came back one day I had a captain again. Kaladin. Well, that was a quick summary. But I left out one important thing. I am a surgebinder, a windrunner. I had learned of my abilitys shortly after arriving at the SP and I could control them fairly well. I had gotten my shardblade at about 21, and I have a spren named Ani, an honorspren. Ah-ni (Just so you all know, all windrunners have honorspren for their spren). Tesh is also a Mistborn. Yes, none of this makes any since (As most of you know, I can't spell) but it's fun to think about. And Ani is always with her (same with her shardblade) no matter where she is. But up there is here story in Roshar as that is where she grew up even though she has a life in the other places. Maybe I'll do her story in Mistborn later. So yah, I have given this a lot of thought, and am I all alone, or is there someone else who has a person in the Cosmere who they become when they are bored?

  22. Also, I'm going to be a terrible person and double post - cuz I GOT THE JOB!!!!! The job I interviewed for on Tuesday? They just contacted me and I accepted the position I'm going to be working for 8 months in the R&D department for Stemcell technologies (a Vancouver based Biotech firm; they do standardized growth media and high quality lab equipment). Its a co-op, a full time, paid internship, and part of my degree - in fact the last part of my degree, the last requirement before I graduate!!! So I'm pretty excited (Not as excited as those in the above post, but still. Pretty excited )

  23. Congrats on engagement! That's a super adorable engagement story; painfully so Once you have a date set, email Brandon, or we can have Josh mention it to him. If wedding is after Oathbringer I can explicitly mention this to Brandon there at the release. Doesn't mean he will go as he is very busy, but I'll make sure he knows of his invitation

  24. Ironpies was lost in thought, to put it simply. In more exaggerated terms, he was drifting through the vague planes of subconsciousness and being truthfully unproductive, while appearing contemplative. Ironpies didn't have eyes, so they couldn't snap open and appear alarmed, so he slowly turned his head to face the voice. He quickly searched his memory for the voice... the one called Dusted Rose. An interesting name. "Hmmm. Greetings, Dusted Rose. Yes, I suppose that the capture of the Changeling was beneficial to the ponies, but--" No, he won't mention the Master. "-- but there are still more," Ironpies said in his deep voice. He glanced at the other cookie he had beside him. He offered it to Dusted Rose. "Would you like a cookie?"

  26. Welcome to the Shard! In Arcanum Unbounded (a collection of all cosmere short stories and novellas Brandon has written), you will find a novella called Edgedancer, which is about Lift, set between WoR and OB. Most of the other stuff in there is fair game for what you've read: there are three standalone novellas (Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, Sixth of the Dusk, and The Emperor's Soul), and one Mistborn short story about Kelsier training with his old master, Gemmel (The Eleventh Metal). You could get away with reading the major Mistborn novella in the collection (Mistborn: Secret History), although Brandon recommends waiting until after you've read the next three Mistborn books. There's a Mistborn short story (Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania) and an Elantris short story (The Hope of Elantris) that won't really make any sense unless you've read the second era of Mistborn and Elantris, respectively. And there's a preview from White Sand; more on that below. If you're looking for the other cosmere books to read, you can follow up on Mistborn with three novels (Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, and Bands of Mourning) which jump forward about three hundred years into the future and are set in an early industrial world. There are two other cosmere novels out right now, Warbreaker and Elantris, which are both standalones. (Brandon has slipped characters from each of them, and from White Sand and from the original Mistborn trilogy, into the background in Stormlight. Keep an eye out for weird interlude characters. Warbreaker has had the most noticeable crossovers, by far.) White Sand is a graphic novel adaptation of an unpublished manuscript Brandon wrote; rather than revise it, he sent it straight out to be adapted. Part 1 of 3 is out right now, and Part 2 will come out about the same time as Oathbringer, I believe. That should be enough to keep you busy. If Oathbringer is anything like the previous two Stormlight books, there will be lots of little tidbits that you can catch if you've read everything from the cosmere. But they won't be so obvious that it won't ruin the experience of Stormlight if you miss them. Stuff like the travelers in the Way of Kings interlude at the Purelake, or all the odd items Mraize has in his collection, or the identity of that strange Ardent who was following Bridge 4 around. For example, there's a House Venture spy in Mistborn named Felt. One of Dalinar's scouts is also named Felt. It's actually the same character! We don't know what he's up to or why he hopped between worlds, but there are a lot of little things like that, that you won't pick up on unless you're fully versed in the cosmere. (Or wait for those of us who are to point it out on the forums.)

  27. That outcome seems just a wee bit unrealistic. I'm mostly shooting for "get them to cover Thing like they're supposed to." If that fails, my goal will become, "Cost them more money than it would have been to just cover Thing."

  34. LG33: Term 9, Month 1 - Wheee Steph slept soundly and woke refreshed and ready to face the new day. Outside, a Skindancer frowned at her door, inserting a finger into the hole and letting it melt to fit, then hardening it. Before it could try to turn the lock, it fell to the ground in agonizing pain. Oooowwwwww. Amelia curled up on her bed, relaxed and happy. Let’s start this story again, shall we? Because it’s slightly different. Once upon a time there was a girl named Amelia. She was, unfortunately, in bad luck at the start of this story. Although she had come from a wealthy family, Amelia was lacking in that wealth - and also, in the common sense department. So, at the moment, she is sleeping on the streets. Can you see her now? Curled up in a tiny little ball, dress ragged, wedged into the corner of an alleyway in the shadow of a set of steps. Hair that was once blonde now a sort of unpleasant dirty blonde, though her blue eyes shine all the same. Unfortunately (because of that ‘common sense’ thing), she’d also made some enemies during her time here. So, as you may recall from last episode of Whose Turn Is It To Die?, there are little bone sticks floating around! Tonight, this particular gleaming white shard of bone (specifically named ‘random shard of bone that you will never see again’) decides that it’s time to target Amelia. So, it starts floating over, bobbing in the wind like some kind of murderous balloon, and... does exactly the same thing as the other bone shard. Once it gets to a certain point, Amelia just seems to vanish from its... perception (yes, it can “see”, don’t even question), almost as if by ~magic~. As before, this shard tries to hit her anyway. And it succeeds! Well done, random shard of bone that you will never see again! (Okay, that name takes too long to type out. From now on, the RSOBTYWNSA is hereby shortened to ‘Jeff’.) Anyway, Jeff actually manages to hit Amelia! Score! Unfortunately, it only hits her arm briefly, and all it manages to do is wake her up and make her sad. Well done, Jeff. You made a little girl sad. (I mean, yes, you were trying to murder her, but still. You made her sad. ) So sad, in fact, that she starts crying. Loudly. Unfortunately for her (but fortunately for Jeff, who is getting a bit annoyed by the bawling right next to his... ear?), this crying is also annoying to other people. Namely, a mercenary! This mercenary wakes up, finds the source of the crying, and (since mercenaries don’t tend to be known for their originality) kills it. Goodbye, Amelia! Yay? The end. Steph was attacked (by Skindancers), but survived! Brightness Radiant was attacked (by ~magic~), but survived, and then was killed by Mercenaries. She was a Student who had studied in Rhetoric & Logic, and Archives! A Name was used. Term 9 has begun. You have 63 hours to send in actions. Speaking of which. ANNOUNCEMENT: As of next rollover, I will be in a different country. Thus, rollover time is changing so it isn’t 1-7 a.m. for me. The new rollover start time will be 2 p.m. MDT / 9 p.m. BST and end at 5 p.m. MDT / 12 a.m. BST. (Yes, that’s only three hours. We also don’t need six at this point in the game.) Thus, this cycle will go a little longer so that rollover is on the 2nd of June (which it already was for Brits, and it’s now the 3rd for Aussies, but it is different for Americans). (Note: If enough people prefer it, we can also shorten the cycle by 24 hours so that it ends on the 1st.) Player List 1. Queensteph - Vintish Noblewoman 2. 35. I started with Elantris. It was, at the very instant I finished the last page, my favorite book. Every Sanderson book after that was then the most perfect book there could ever be. I've read SA thrice this year, and I've noticed that whenever you open up to a random page, there is always something interesting happening. Even during Kaladin's depression stages, Brandon pulls you on. Brandon Sanderson is amazing and there is no one here that shall ever disagree with me!!

  36. So, I've always noticed a similarity between Kal's impressions of Syl an Tien. This made me wonder if Syl was somehow a pseudo-reincarnation of Tien. But she has really old memories, so this seemed unlikely. Then I saw this WoB: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=836#26 This says most of what spren get is physical form and memory in the PR. So, what else do they get? I don't know as much of the spiritual realm as I'd like, but what I've gleaned is that it is a realm of connections. Spren seem to be cognitive manifestations of abstract concepts that are drawn to perceived instances of those concepts in the PR. Being abstract things, do they therefore lack connections (and so presence) in the SR? Kaladin has an unusually strong desire to protect, which drew Syl. That desire to protect initially was focused on Tien, with whom he had a very strong Connection. When he lost Tien, that connection remained, but the associated desire to protect became more generalised. Syl represents that desire to protect. So, in bonding with Kal and becoming the cognitive manifestation of his desire to protect, does she also tap into his spiritual connection to Tien, and so inherit some part of their emotional relationship? If so, does this count as pseudo-reincarnation? Whilst this started with the Syl-Kal-Tien relationship only, I have also noticed it applies to Dalinar-Stormfather-Gavilar. The Stormfather was drawn to Dalinar as a result of his desire to unify the kingdom, and hold rigidly to the codes (both presumed aspects of Bondsmiths). These are both desires tied strongly to the memory of his brother. Also, Dalinar always felt his brother was an unstoppable force that shaped those around him into what he needed them to be, making them better as a byproduct; this is clearly also true of highstorms (though whether this is a particular impression Dalinar holds regarding highstorms is unclear). The evidence of spiritual connection seems less obvious here, until Dalinar's final vision in WoR, just prior to bonding the Stormfather. In that vision, which the Stormfather did not consciously send, Dalinar felt as if Gavilar were in the next room (paraphrased). That suggests a spiritual connection to Gavilar manifested via the Stormfather. What this means for Pattern, Ivory, Glys... I think we need to know more. What do you guys think?

  37. Hey, all. Brandon here. With the release of this book, there have been some minor updates to continuity that I think some of you will find relevant. The big one has to do with Hoid's visit to Terris in The Well of Ascension. For those unfamiliar with the backstory, this little behind-the-scenes action has been a source of some consistent problems. The outline, and original draft, of Well had Vin and Elend traveling up to Terris, then into the mountains, to find the Well itself. This was a huge momentum killer in the story. Having your cityscape-focused book suddenly turn into a traveling quest fantasy for a few chapters felt very out of place, and required too much strange time-jumping to make it work. In revisions, I set about finding a way to repair this, and to overlap the Well of Ascension discovery with Vin's return to Luthadel. The end result worked much better, but I was forced to cut Hoid's cameo. (In the form of footsteps in the snow and frost leading to the Well, hinting that someone had been there just before her.) I knew where Hoid was, and added in the cameo of him with the Terris people—with the plan still being that he visited the Well sometime during the days after Vin's return to the city. Well, in working on Secret History, I found that this had a problem with it. Hoid had to already know where the Well is, because after the destruction of the Pits, he'd need to use the Well to return to Scadrial after leaving in the middle of book one to attend to certain other events. If you've read the story, you know this is how I proceeded. Official continuity is that Hoid went up to Terris after visiting the Well, as he had things to do there. He did not go looking for the Well. This doesn't change continuity for any of the books, though it does render one of the annotations for Well obsolete. Otherwise, I'm quite pleased about this novella. I wasn't certain how it would go, writing something using threads I'd left dangling ten years ago. (You should thank the beta readers, who are all Sharders I believe, for their continuity help. They made me aware pf several things I needed to make much more clear from the original draft, so that canon would be more crisp.) I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding which times when someone appears to hear Kelsier's voice were actually Kelsier. The story offers the official canon for this as well. It's nice to finally be able to give the answers to some longtime fan questions, such as what spooked Vin during her inspection of Hoid and what was up with Preservation and the Mist Spirit. It's entirely possible that, despite our efforts, we slipped up and made some continuity error here or there. If so, I'm terribly sorry! This one has been particularly challenging to do. Thanks, as always, for reading.

  38. After spending WAY too much time researching the various orders and being consistently dissatisfied with other quizzes online, I created a Knights Radiant Order sorter (I hate that that rhymes) based upon personality, psychology, and ideology. I'd love to know what orders you all fall into with this quiz, whether or not you think it's accurate, or if you think I should change something. For my sake and the sake of others, I need to have a good personality identification not based upon stupid questions like "Which character is your favorite". Knights Radiant Order Quiz ^Links updated, now works I took the test the day after I created it (so I couldn't remember much of the specific tagging I did), answering as honestly as possible, and got the order I identify with, so I'm really hoping it's accurate.

  39. Hold the secret that broke the Knights Radiant. You may need it to destroy the new orders when they return. - WOR Chapter 84 epigraph (decoded) Now, as the Windrunners were thus engaged, arose the event which has hitherto been referenced: namely, that discovery of some wicked thing of eminence -- WOR Chapter 38 epigraph These epigraphs strongly imply that the Recreance was precipitated by the KR discovering some terrible fact. It doesn't seem to have been tied to any corruption that may have crept in to the Orders (the taxes for travel through Urithiru, etc.) Now, here's something anomalous. The Desolations devastated Roshar, killing something like 90 percent of the human population and knocking technology back to the stone age, at least sometimes. Yet when Honor was Splintered (after the Recreance -- he remembers it in the visions) there seems to have been no such cataclysm. Aharietiam is still seen as "the Last Desolation", which it wouldn't be if another apocalyptic event had occurred since the Recreance. Similarly, Odium Splintered Devotion and Dominion on Sel. But humanity on that planet survived; he didn't destroy the planet, depopulate it, or warp it into some kind of a hellscape. So why the devastating, lethal Desolations on Roshar before the Recreance? Because humans were fighting on Honor's side. Odium doesn't really care about killing humans, except incidentally to getting at the Shards; nothing much below the power-level of a Herald registers on his "radar screen" Therefore, my proposal for the Secret That Broke The KR is: Honor's been feeding us into a meat grinder for thousands of years to protect Cultivation and a couple of alien gods we'll never see. If we let Odium win, nothing bad really happens to humanity. Honor betrayed us. Our spren have been in on it, all along - they're pieces of Honor. So let him die.

  43. That's because we don't get the POV of many others to gauge the impact. BUT it did have huge impact. Three scenes explain this. 1. Dalinar running to meet Kaladin when he comes out of the chasm alive and their "talk". That's how highly even Dalinar, one of the greatest Alethi warriors viewed Kaladin. 2. Elokthar's interactions with Kaladin towards the end of the book before the assassination attempt. Even the king held Kaladin in high regard. 3. Taravangian was keeping a close look at Kaladin. This much was inferred right at the end of the book. There were genuine suspicions abt Kaladin but then radiants were not something "normal people" were probably thinking off. So, expect for few who knew what to look for in Kaladin, everyone else probably took him for a great warrior.

  46. My dad googled "good fantasy books" because he had run out of things to read, and bought The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. He kept telling me how good this book was, how good the world-building was, and random facts about the culture. ("Everyone's divided by eye color, so you would have to call me Brightlord and be my scribe, you lowly darkeyes! Mwahaha. Also, your safehand is showing.") I told him I would probably give the book a try when he was done with it. Then we went on a plane trip together, the book I had brought wasn't keeping my interest, my dad was in the washroom and the Way of Kings was lying on his seat. So I picked it up and opened to the middle of the book to get a sense of this guy's writing style. My life was changed forever. Just one sentence about Dalinar trying to preserve his reputation had me hooked. I wanted to keep reading from there, find out about the character's problem and who he was, but I forced myself to start at the beginning of the book like a normal person. I looked at the size of the book and remember thinking "I'm going to devote myself to reading this and understanding everything that happens, even if the plot is super complex!" I read WoK and WoR, then I think I started with Warbreaker next because I remember being surprised that actual mammals existed in this world and it wasn't also a rocky wasteland. I can't remember though if I made the connection between Nightblood and Szeth's new sword. After that I read the Mistborn series, and sometime at that point I looked something about the books up online and found myself on the Coppermind, and from there I discovered the Cosmere, though it took me a while to figure out what it all was. Since then I've read the Wax and Wayne series, Elantris, the Reckoners series, The Rithmatist, Alcatraz, and Arcanum Unbounded, and I've loved all of them!
