  1. Cycle 2: Wow, that was Suspiciously Fast. Wow, So much happened guys. First off, I got called on to officiate a wedding! It was so Beautiful! Who new Detective Deuce was so good with Words! I was lucky enough to be around when he proposed to Celia, and man, it made my heart start to flutter. He said, Celica, hey baby, hey. I know this might sound a little crazy but hear me out. I've seen a lotta dollar dames come and go, and you've got the kind of eyes with bad news written on them like an Oculator of '29. But you and me, we got gold on the soles of our feet, baby- and all the angels in heaven decided to take a piss at the same time. Listen, I did a lot of gutter crawling back in teachie- and it's not getting any easier any time soon. Do you mind if I smoke? So yeah, that's why I put all my chips inside and out- no questions asked. Put your feet up a little, young lady- there's a man outside with typewriters in his pockets, he's blue but I'm not sure if he's jaded. Anyway, so listen up- this seven card gig is a hands down shake your knees and exit on your left kind of sideshow, but people like me don't cut another man's cards unless his jibs aren't inside the moon vehicle at all times. You got that? So here's the catch, I gotta runner down the shortcut to pipe city- but people like me don't go outdoors without an umbrella unless it's three days until christmas, know what I mean? Now I'm here on a concrete slab of wood floating down the margarita river, and I ain't got a shoebox to make it up the downstairs. So... What I'm trying to say is... Will you marry me, Celica?" And she said, I've come to a decision Deuce. I must follow my heart! And my heart is telling me to say yes! You're the only detective for me. Isn’t that adorable? I hope I find someone half as nice as him. Their wedding was a huge affair. Crystin knights, My cousins, Librarians, Astronauts and even a dinosaur were there. The biggest party I’ve been to in years! And absolutely perfect for striking up conversations with possible Hushlanders Unfortunately, i didn’t find one. But i found someone just as good! One of the people i talked to was actually in recruitment talks. They mentioned bringing me along, and i said yes, so i was brought to an actual agent, and they cleared me! I’m a Hushlander Agent now! But everything went down from there. Poor Squirrelmort, you know, the wizard? He got swept up in all the emotions of the wedding, and proposed to the girl of his dreams. But she said no! He was so heartbroken that he started crying right then and there, and hurried away from her. The girl also cried, but couldn’t quite explain why to the people who tried to comfort her. She got out just enough of the story to make them angry though, so they tracked down the poor squirrel, and shot him with a comastick! They all scattered before King Dartmoor arrived unfortunately. He can yell really loud when he wants to. Apparently Squirrelmort was a Close confident of his, and one of my cousins? (Can squirrels and Humans even be relatives?) Poor squirrely. So, King Dartmoor talked to the Crystin Knights, and the Council tried to hunt down whoever put the squirrel into a coma. They went through a lot of suspect, while i just followed them around. At one point they thought they found their man, when they met a person who was chucking books at someone’s head (They were ‘testing for librarians’ apparently.) But they moved on when they realized that Thomas the Occulator was no where to be found. Obviously, he’d fled the party after Squirrelmort got put into a Coma! So they kicked down his door, grabbed him before he could throw on a pair of glasses, and dragged him to their Crystal Spire, to be held as a Prisoner of War until the End of the war, or the world, whichever came last. Weirdest wedding I’ve ever been to. But hey, surely there won’t be any weirder ones. Right? Unodus and Lopen have gotten Married! Sart was Detained! He was a Freeworlder! Bridge Boy was Lynched! He was a Freeworlder Smedy with a Talent for Looking Ugly! 2. EDIT: Okay, kids. I'm super pumped to see you all using this database and finding good stuff. But please don't tag me whenever you post something from it. Instead, link to the Excel sheet itself, or to this post with instructions on how to filter. Or just link straight to the reddit comment in question. It's my 1000th post, so I figured I'd do something special. Like many of us, I've been concerned with notable info from Reddit that is difficult to find. So I decided to go on the hunt and pull together as much as I can. The following link is to an Excel sheet (you don't need Excel, it will work completely in the browser) with 749 WoBs, some of which were quite hard to find. https://1drv.ms/x/s!AplGxH8o0rfpnV1bJxqsi4NxrKMC I know there are some mistakes in my data; I have a couple WoBs without dates, a few where I mistyped dates and have a WoB from the future, apparently. If you see any of them, feel free to point them out to me in this thread. Also, I only concerned myself with cosmere-relevant stuff, no Reckoners, no WoT, no general writing advice, none of Brandon's terrible jokes. Many of the quotes from the AMAs will already be in Theoryland, but I haven't done a cross-reference to check on the exact extent. Brandon has a habit of returning to an old AMA to keep on answering stuff after people have stopped watching to catalogue it, so the 2015 AMA especially has a lot of stuff that didn't make it to Theoryland. The earlier ones, maybe not so much. I don't have any tags in here. I am working on tagging them in my own database, but that doesn't carry over well to a simple Excel sheet. So, the best way to find something is using a keyword search. If you click the arrow on the right of the first column header, you can use text filters to search for particular words or phrases. Oh, and I did break up any comment that had multiple questions, which should make it easier to skim through stuff when you've run a search. You can also look by specific thread. If you go to the right, you will see many columns for events: 5 AMAs, 6 Oathbringer updates, one Secret History update, and a single column to capture anything that isn't in one of the threads Brandon started. To select all from a particular event, click on the arrow, select "Filter..." and unselect Blanks. (If there's an "x" in that column, it means it was from that event.) This is useful for two reasons: first of all, I think the best way to become familiar with WoBs is to look through an event report, rather than look by subject. And second, this should make it easy to add to Theoryland. (Heyo, @WeiryWriter and @Ted aka WinespringBrother.) It's a little scrappy, but it's functional. Hopefully this will all make it into Theoryland, in which case it doesn't need to look nice here. And anyone else can feel free to download a copy or take this data to use in your own WoB catalogue. But, for now, it's not too complicated to search through here. That being said, I waited way too long to start doing this, and I am missing a good chunk of stuff. Theoryland did a good job cataloguing Brandon's WoBs up through 2013. Due to how Reddit lets you view past comments, I can only look back to April 2016 for anything that isn't a topic Brandon himself started. So, there are just over two years of Brandon's random comments on other peoples' threads that we're missing. I hope he was doing most of his WoB-dropping in the 2015 AMA and in his various Oathbringer updates. But, if you have anything that I am missing from that time period (looking at you, @Kurkistan), please send me links, so I can include them. So, there you have it. Happy 1000th post to me, and good hunting to all of you.

  3. I was reading through the excellent WoB Reddit compilation done by Pagerunner over in the Event and Signings forum yesterday. There was so much there I had missed, and I fixated on a ton of it. The thing I've though the most about is probably the least substantiated but I wanted to throw it out anyways. It all stems from this question: Q: At any point did Tanavast relinquish the power of Honor to someone else A: RAFO Obviously, anything read into an RAFO is already on rocky ground, but bare with me. This really got me thinking about how Odium shatters Shards, what we know about those, and what we learned about the process and requirements for ascension in Mistborn. 1. In Mistborn we learn how important it is to have a connection to the power of a shard in order to become its holder, whether that is built up over time, or artificially created as Kelsier was able to do. 2. We also know from WoB that Odium killed the holders or Dominion and Devotion AND shattered their shards. The way it was written did not imply necessarily that the same action was used for both, and I actually think that taking direct action against a Shard (not its holder), might be impossible unless it is 'free.' So, if that were the case, Odium would have had to kill the holders first, wait for the Shard to 'drop,' and then shatter it. Considering what we know about connection allowing you to assume a Shard, part of the reason for that might be that even if Odium could "shatter" a Shard's power while it was being held, a Holder would be well connected to it to assemble pieces. So, What if Odium "shattering" a shard is actually much less complex than we may have thought it to be--it's literally just breaking the shards power up into an assortment of random smaller, ineffectual pieces--and the reason it is "permanent" is that no Holder exists who can recall the powers full shape and pull it together. 3. This is what I thought about when I read the question above. Given that Tanavast, much like preservation, seems to be playing a long game (the Oathpact, leaving the dreams for someone like Dalinar, etc.), I expect he would have been very concerned that what happened to Devotion and Dominion may happen to him. He may have realized that Odium's method relied on their being no one capable of reassembling a shattered shard, which perhaps is something only someone who has held it could do. So, here's the theory: At some point post-shattering of Dominion and Dev, Tanavast set up a long-game plan for defeating Odium. He voluntarily gave his power to someone capable of ascending but also 'Honorable' enough to give it back. In doing so, he created a Sliver with a strong connection to the fully intact Honor Shard. Then, when Odium came to Roshar, Tanavast concocted this entire "campaign" with the Oathpact, etc. in order to convince Odium that this was the real battle. And then... he let Odium win by sacrificing something/luring him into the gambit that has trapped him in the Roshar system. Meanwhile, some secret order, maybe colluding with Cultivation, or perhaps even a secret instruction to one of the Heralds (Taln seems the obvious choice given his prominence as a viewpoint character), is guarding the secret Sliver of Honor. Then once Odium has committed again, thinking he is only fighting fragments of Honor's power and Cultivation, the Sliver can ascend and truly challenge him while he is bound to Roshar. This also works with a potential reading of why Odium did not Shatter Ambition in the Threndoite system--but elsewhere. If the fight was not going well, one side likely fled and was chased elsewhere where the battle resumed. What if part of the value to Odium of not heavily investing in planets was his ability to remain mobile. Tanavast has now limited that, and if a secret Sliver exist, potentially forced Odium into an eventual fight against Two Full Shards aware of his tricks. This has enough but not inordinate parallels to Mistborn, and also speaks to the fact that since all of the original 16 knew each other, some of them should have been able to figure out how Rayse thinks and build a counter strategy. I realize this is a huge stretch and probably crazy but I couldn't stop thinking about it after I read that question so to the forums it goes.

  4. Greetings! So here are the recordings of the reading/Q&A and the signing line, respectively. And here is a doc that people can use for transcription. This was my first time at a major con and my first time seeing Brandon Sanderson. The weekend was great. At the opening ceremonies Brandon came and sat down right next to me, and it was all fantastic from there. Getting to record the signing was a dream come true; as I've been living overseas for a number of years and unable to actually come to signings myself, I've really enjoyed the tradition of people recording and posting them. So thanks to all the people who've done that for the last three years! @Kurkistan He said that someone in Poland had figured it out who the Terriswoman in Warbreaker was and I asked him if it was Lemex' nurse, and he nodded and smiled. He said he had no idea how anyone figured it out, which is interesting.

  6. Putting this in blue because it represent my out of game opinion, unrelated to my role/alignment for this game, but I feel that asking someone to refer specific information from their GM PM like this is on the edges of breaking the spirit of the game. We could ask the same thing of everyone, trying to find someone who slips up by not posting the exact phrasing that is used in someone else's GM PM but that doesn't sound particularly fun to me. @Bridge Boy I for one would not hold it against you in the slightest if you chose to simply say "in an effort to keep to the spirit of the games, I chose not to reveal that information." That being said, I also have no problem with anybody suspecting or lynching Bridgeboy based on what he has posted so far or what he chooses to post in the future. It IS rather suspicious behavior. Herb noticed the shocked look on the face of the girl sitting quietly in the corner with a laptop on her lap. "Ah, I see you have been mislead by librarian propaganda, my dear. You see, while the librarians make a habit of stealing the bones of my cousin dinosaurs, inflating them to outrageous proportions, and then burying them in the ground as a means of misdirection and spreading false knowledge, in the case of my noble species they have chosen to do just the opposite. They shrink the bones of Micropachycephalosaurs to tiny sizes and try to make us out as being a small, unthreatening species. I can assure you that we are quite threatening and dangerous, and I am actually on the smaller side for one of my species. In short, the reputation that the Librarians have given to other dinosaurs as being large, vicious meat-eating machines? Well we Micropachycephalosaurs actually deserve that reputation." Herb licked his lips and turned to Orlok, still gripped in his claws. Herb blinked, looking between Jack and Orlok. Orlok was certainly squirming about and trying his best to participate in the conversation below, but he hadn't actually acknowledged that he was about to be eaten. There was none of the normal screaming and flailing that usually accompanied such an event. "Right-o, sorry about that chap!" Herb said, setting Orlok gently on the ground. Herb looked around for someone else to eat. His gaze fell on Shem Smedry (Seonid), quietly working in a corner by himself. He looked quite tasty.

  10. Very astute, I was embarrassed I failed to see that on my first read. The answer is we don't know who swapped it, except that it wasn't Hoid and that none of the main characters know who has it. Here are some WoBs, the most important ones at the bottom. Edit - Stormlight Archive spoilers, just in case...

  11. Cycle 1: Why are you on the List? Wow, I messed up baddly. So, I wrote down the 20 people i thought might be Hushlanders, right? And why i thought they might be. And then I accidentally lost the List. And then King Dartmoor picked it up. And now he’s starting a Librarian hunt, so all the people i pointed out are now under heavy suspicion. Right then Sabanta, keep your courage up. You can still do this, and now, you have the full weight of the king behind you, kind of. I mean, they’re looking for the Hushlanders to capture them, and I’m looking for them to join them, but if I piggy back on their investigation, i should be able to figure out who is a Hushlander before they get executed. Now then, who to start with first? I guess I better just observe the proceedings, and try to figure out from how they’re acting. Unfortunately, Sabanta Smedry And the game is afoot! Remember, anyone can get married, only 1 pm per cycle, no copy/pasting, and don’t trust people! Have fun! Player List: Bridge Boy (Squirrelmort) A Squirrel wearing glasses and wizard robes. 13. So for a long time I have been developing developing a large universe in my head. It's basic elemental magic, with 12 basic powers. The premise is based on characters who essentially have god level powers in their respective elements. I never plan on writing it, but I do like thinking in it. The magic is really cool, but I love the idea of basically humanizing these immensely powerful beings is really soothing for my psyche lol. I call them the Power Keepers. Dragons and their ilk are featured. If you want I'll share more about it. Ok you do then lol. Here we go. Magic is a form of energy that can be essentially coded by a person with a strong enough aura. Aura, or life force, can have 12 different types, which form the various ways a mage can interact with magic. Children are born with either a pure aura, which tends to be powerful, or a somewhat mixed aura, of which the dominant power will be trained. The elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Electromagnetic force, Life force, Kinetics, Gravity, Space-Time, Magic (Sorcery), Quantum, and Entropy. Powerful kids are picked up young to teach them how to wisely use their powers. Mages often learn specialization within their element, for example focusing on using ice within the Water element. Magic can be used in a myriad of ways, and each element has many paths of mastery and usage. Mages often create their own magical weapons, or pick up ancient weapons from more powerful mages. Spells can be imbued into objects with the proper preparation. There are many mages in The galaxy. But at any one time, the 12 most powerful mages, one for each respective element, form the Power Keepers. They keep a watch on the galaxy, not interfering in small events but rather in events that threaten the galaxy and the universe at large. They take one or two main apprentices, who are the next most powerful mages. Given how things in the universe go, a powerkeeper will usually die when an upcoming mage is more powerful and skilled, as the universe no longer needs them. The group also trains less powerful students, who learn to use their powers and then are sent back to their homes to be heroes, or whatever they choose to be. But the universe is under attack from a enemy so powerful the universe cannot stop it without help. So, following the law of complete balance in the universe, the universe creates a Great Mage, the single most powerful and skilled mage in their element. There will only ever be 12 in the history of the universe, and when they die, they ascend to a higher dimension to join the battle against the Enemy, and await the rest of the great mages to finally stop the Enemy from chewing its way through the dimensions. The story begins on earth with a blossoming water mage (who is basically me. I developed this story when I was feeling fairly powerless in elementary school) who discovers the nefarious Shadow, who has been keeping mages from becoming mages for the past 2000 years. He eventually becomes the dragon warrior (which is exactly what it sounds like. Really cool), is trained by the Tarok-Bajir (the best swordsman species in the galaxy. They have blades coming out of their elbows), and in fighting the Shadow rediscovers the purpose of the great mages, of which he is the Great Water Mage. He refounds the powerkeepers. I also have the story of the final battle with the enemy, the magical society known as the 12 cities set up after the Enemy, the dragon civil wars, and a powerkeeper apprentice who chooses to find his own path in Sorcery (currently working on this one right now, he is the Rogue Mage.) As well as the story of the Celestial dragons. I plan on next working out an Electro mage, to help thrash out their powers. If I were to ever write it, I might start with the Water Mage story, or I might start with the Rogue Mage or the guardians of the 12 cities. Simply because those 2 stories are less over powered. in fact, the guardians of the cities are some of my favorite characters. They wield the ancient weapons of the Great Mages, and guard 12 beautiful cities on 12 planets, each built around a particular element (imagine elantris, a lot bigger, one elantris per element). Now I am perfectly aware that this magic system breaks sanderson laws of magic, in that the limitations are more interesting than the Powers. But I'm playing with that theory and saying ok. What if there ARE no limitations? What kind of enemy would be worthy of such a hero? What would be their role? So the Water Mage is unusual in his time of how he uses his power for more offensive reasons, rather than the scholarly reasons mages use it for typically. There is also eventually a technological empire of non-mages where they have an artificial planet called Infinitasius, which is NOT a death star. They are the same timeline as the 12 cities. links to various things: entropy, an Unfair Competition, The 12 Cities, The Rogue Mage, Dragon Warrior

  15. My singular purpose in this life is to get married before I die. <3 I suppose I must enter the dating scene first, however. As a very contradictory man, I feel it is my duty to inform the GM that I will go completely against what he has warned and I shall trust people, even those who don't appear trustworthy. I know, I know, entering a library isn't exactly the most trustworthy thing to do these days, even for me. But hey, it's for a good cause! I slide into a chair next to Jemma, who appears to be absorbed in a book and deep in thought. Quite charming, if you ask me. "How are you doing today?" @BrightnessRadiant

  18. Points in your Favor: You don't contradict the fact that Tanavast actually died to Odium's attack Tanavast is still around(somewhat), so he could still have a plan/long con Brandon has called Splintering a "smaller scale Shattering," so pieces with different Intents isn't too far-fetched Both Tanavast and the Nightform Parshendi have spoken of a "challenged champion" Potential Problems/Contradictions: Becoming a Sliver doesn't automatically make you immortal Your connections can change, especially over a vast amount of years Taln couldn't really guard the chosen one while enduring millennia in Braize, and the other 9 jumped ship. Brandon has said that we've seen all the non-Worldhopper secret Societies on Roshar already We've speculated that the Heralds gave up b/c they didn't have an endgame, so they wouldn't know about this plan (if we're right) My Thoughts and Opinions: Honor knows at least one method to circumvent a lack of immortality(The Heralds) Yet another Secret Society? (And one almost giving me Order of Mata Nui vibes, no less...) So.. Sons of Honor perhaps? They are the ones who want Odium to "be committed again," as it were. Are you implying that Odium is the one who left Threnody for the kill of Ambition? The Heralds could've been kept in the dark so they can't reveal the plan if tortured. All in all, it's a great theory. Biggest issue is potential changing connections over the millennia

  21. There was a loud crash as something massive slammed into the door, followed by a muffled "Ouch!" The door knob rattled and twisted ineffectually for a minute, and then the door creaked and bulged inwards before finally bursting from its hinges. A massive green creature was pressed up against the doorframe- too large to make out through the opening. It shifted and turned until its head was visible. "Good Afternoon. I say, I am sorry about the door," it roared in a British accent. "They just don't make them like they used to. Might I come in?" When nobody objected, the creature pushed its head into the room, followed by an arm. At this point things starting getting tricky. The creature scrabbled and twisted, and after few seconds it managed to squeeze its second arm through the doorway, but now its ribcage was wedged between either side of the doorframe. The creature breathed out all the air in its lungs with a loud "Whhoooogh," then scrambled forward as far as it could. It only made it as far as its hips. The creature gently pulled, strained, shimmied, wiggled, pushed, and pressed, but to no avail. Finally it gave up trying to be delicate and instead just planted its legs and shoved, smashing the sides of the doorframe as it heaved its hips and legs through. After that it's tail followed easily, though the creature was big enough that it had to circle two thirds of the way around the room before its tail finally fit. The creature cleared its throat, and said, "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Herbert, though you may call me Herb. As you can see, I am a proud member of the Micropachycephalosaurus species." Herbert doffed the bowler hat he was wearing. The hat, which was regular sized for a human, looked tiny compared to Herbert's massive bulk. He went on, "All that hullaballoo with the door seems to have worked up my appetite." He reached out a clawed hand, and picked up Orlok by the collar of his coat. "Would it be much of a bother to anyone if I ate this chap?" Out of character stuff: Yay, this is starting already! FYI I'm pretty busy for the next few days, but my schedule should clear up significantly after Saturday. I'll do my best to keep up with the thread and post when I can. Also, day 1 lynches. Yes. For this particular game I am all in favor. It is a quick fix after all- no time to waste talking, just gotta start lynching. And I never did give my customary Contribution Crusade speech before the game began, but this is a quick fix so I don't know how much it will be needed. I'll just give the abridged version now: Everybody signed up for this game to play and have fun. So play the game and have fun. Don't abandon it- that's lame. I of all people understand that life can get busy and following the game can get tedious sometimes, but do what you can, post what you can, when you can, and have a good time with this game. One way or another it will be over in about a week or two, so enjoy it while you can!

  22. LG33: Term 4, Month 1 - Dance Sloan stood before the mercenary, glaring at him despite the ragged state of her clothes and the dirtied dance shoes which were all she had left. She couldn’t bear to part with them, and her normal shoes sold a little better anyway. “Why’re you glaring, sweetheart? I just asked for a little something nice,” the mercenary said, leering. “Come on now, you can’t refuse an old warrior his due.” Sloan clenched her fists. “You are the most disgusting man I’ve ever met!” she burst out. “Now, now. That’s going a bit far,” the man said, eyes darkening. He put a hand to his sword. “Behave, now, or bad things start happening.” Sloan felt at the wall behind her, hoping in vain for some little crevice or something. She grimaced. Nowhere to go. She looked up at the mercenary. “Never.” He drew his sword, advancing slowly, toying with his victim. “Come here, little girl,” he crooned. “Say that again, and you’re losing a limb.” She grinned fiercely. “Never,” she repeated, louder, crying it out as if she wanted the world to hear. “I will never submit to men like you!” He roared and swung and- missed. She’d taken a single graceful step to the side, swaying for all the world as if in a dance studio, and not some dirty alley with a mercenary trying to kill her or worse. The dodge only made him angrier, and he swung at her leg. She leaped over it, fluttering her legs in midair to show how unimpressed she was. She smiled a little, and began to hope. Maybe, just maybe, she’d make it out alive. She ducked and wove and danced, dodging stroke after stroke, smiling. This, Sloan thought. For me? This is life. This is what it means, right here. To dance with death and dance with joy anyway, because this is what makes life worth living. She became too absorbed in the thought, and didn’t notice until he nicked her, finally. She gasped at the pain. He grinned in victory. “You will die for your refusal, little girl.” I refuse to die here, now. I have so many more dances yet to come, Sloan thought with determination. She leapt and kicked the mercenary in the face. He staggered back, but she was equally thrown off balance and slammed backwards into the wall from the force of the kick. “You’re a pretty dancer, but dancing is no match for a sword,” the man groaned. He recovered quickly and swung just as Sloan leapt forward. "Maybe, but you're still not going to have me, and that broken nose is going to hurt for a while," she replied. "What broken- uuuuungh." "Told ya so," she said, then faltered. She looked down at the sword embedded in her chest, hand raising up gracefully one last time. So ends my dance, I suppose… A cloaked figure slid over the cobblestones of the courtyard slowly. It could have walked, of course. It still had a human body. But it was more comfortable sliding, and after all, that was far more ominous. So it slid. It reached the doorway to the inn, weaving through the inn’s patrons with a ducked head and hood thrown back to show its perfectly ordinary face. It made its way up the stairs, still walking like any other student, but slowed when it reached the hallway. A decidedly nonhuman tongue flicked out to taste the air. As quietly as it could, it slipped to Eolah’s door. It tilted its head, considering bashing the door down. Eh. How conventional. It raised its hand and knocked. And waited. It knocked again. After five minutes had passed, it wanted to knock the door down anyway. But instead, it reached into its robe and found a pair of lockpicks. Eolah, of course, wasn’t inside. The Skindancer waited there all night for her, in fact. But he was nowhere to be seen. (Nowhere to be seen by the Skindancers, anyway. The reader happens to have the privilege of knowing that Eolah was laid out in an alley where she’d been knocked by a brawler over the matter of his girlfriend’s beauty and a fruit basket. [And yes, the fruit basket is by far the more important argument. Obviously.]) “Chancellor Varda.” Aodhan Breacadh stood before the Horns, arrogant and fearless before the assembled students and Masters. Shadows danced and flickered about the edges of the room, as a chill breeze blew from nowhere. While knowledge of the magic involved spoiled some of the effect, she had to admit that Naming and Glamourie could generate a bit of an atmosphere. “Re’lar Breacadh. It has come to my attention that you have been accused of plotting to destroy the University.” “So the wind has told me, Chancellor. It’s all but buzzing with rumour these days.” “It has also come to me attention that you refuse to defend yourself from these claims.” He inclined his head, an acknowledgement. “I believe to do otherwise would be an insult to the intelligence of all involved.” “Fair enough. I am afraid, then, that I have no choice but to expel you from the University.” Another small nod. “And I assume you will not willingly submit yourself to imprisonment and punishment for your crimes?” Aodhan bowed deeply, the perfect picture of formal respect. Something about the movement, however, its fluidity, its uncaring ease given the context, somehow turned it into a mockery, a jeer. “You would assume correctly.” “Begone, then. The other Masters and I will not bother to try and stop you. I cannot say the same of our students, however.” “I understand.” He turned and left, passing through the doors without another word. The cold and darkness faded, eventually. When they did, the gathered students began to file out, intent, almost somehow hungry. She wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a lynch mob before the day was out. She would be surprised, however, if said mob managed to find Breacadh. Why is it, that of all the students I have dealt with thus far, the one intent on destruction seems the most sane? As if to prove her point, the next to enter was Dele Fajro. “What this time...” Varda sighed. Dele bit her lip, looking down to hide shame or amusement. Varda wasn’t certain which. “I, um. May have injured someone, maybe, while I was experimenting with plushies, Chancellor?” “....right.” At least the girl’s original, I suppose. “Dele. This is the third time you’ve been on the Horns. I’d thought you knew better by now!” “But... plushies,” Dele mumbled, ducking her head again. “If this keeps up, I’ll have to expel you,” Varda warned. “This kind of behavior is not acceptable.” Dele looked up at that, her bright blue eyes meeting Varda’s grey ones. “Then expel me, Chancellor,” she said. “I’ve learned all I need to know, here. And I’m definitely not going to stop experimenting.” Varda raised an eyebrow. “Very well. Dele Fajro, you are now expelled...” she continued the speech without even thinking. The fact that it was so routine was frightening. They’d expelled so many students, already... “Amelia,” Varda called. “Amelia?” Amelia took a moment more to steel herself, then came forward, ducking her head. “Chancellor?” “It says here that there have been several complaints about you causing noise?” Varda wasn’t certain how such a quiet girl would result in such things, but stranger complaints had happened. (At least the fruit had stopped, for the moment.) “Um. I, um. I’m sorry, Chancellor,” the girl stuttered out. “What exactly is the noise you’ve been making, student?” Varda asked curiously. “Do I have to say?” Amelia said pleadingly. “If it’s a reasonable excuse, your punishment will be reduced.” The girl blushed and looked down. “I, uh, would rather not say, if that’s okay with you, Chancellor? Please?” Varda raised an eyebrow, but didn’t press. “Very well. For disturbing other students and Masters at work, you’ll be lashed tomorrow. Desist whatever you’re doing to create these noises, or your next punishment will be significantly more severe.” Eol was attacked, but didn’t go insane! Silverblade broke out of the Crockery! Wilson died! She was a Student! Aonar and Burnt were expelled! BrightnessRadiant was brought on the Horns and charged with Reckless Use of Sympathy! 23. While reading the Stormlight Archive books, I realized that spren are 'real life' emoticons. So naturally I made some emoticons involving spren. To use an emote, copy the link next to it in the parentheses and paste it into your post. You can also right-click the link and choose "Copy Link Location", then paste it in your message. 17thshard.com forums allow you to load pictures into your posts by pasting the URL of the image into the post's content. It may be helpful to save a .txt file in notepad with all of the links you prefer to use in order to copy and paste elsewhere. Also, more cosmere-themed emoticons are under construction. 24. This is a tenuous theory, but here goes... We know that Honor's perpendicularity moves. (and I'll spoiler quotes for size reasons) So understandably a possible theory is that it's in the Highstorms. But I just read something I'd never seen before, a scene from between WoR and Oathbringer that Brandon published on the Tor website back in 2014. So the Highstorm containing the perpendicularity doesn't make sense to me. The Highstorms sweep across Roshar pretty fast, so there's no way they could catch up with it, there's no reason to go north or south because it covers the continent. For it to be very distant, and them to walk to it, it must be in a relatively set location at the time of these events, not sweeping across the continent. So to me that largely rules out the Highstorm. Now, we know from here that Jasnah, after escaping the Cognitive Realm, ended up in the Unclaimed Hills. So I know Jasnah elsecalled to that location, that's made clear by her means of arrival, Hoid and WoBs. We know that Jasnah could not Elsecall directly out of the Cognitive Realm without getting to a 'juncture' (a perpendicularity). Perhaps that just as she didn't have enough Stormlight (it would surprise me if one can only Elsecall near a perpendicularity as that would make it a pretty useless power). So to me, the reason they need to find a juncture is presumably to either access more Stormlight (as we know the Cognitive Realms is Stormlight-poor), or more likely because with the amount she has she needs to be much closer to a place where the boundaries between the realms are particularly thin. We also know from WoR that she didn't mean to Elsecall to exactly where she was, because she was trying to escape. But as she's in the Unclaimed Hills, which are between Alethkar and the Shattered Plains (well, part of them anyway), I'm assuming she didn't Elsecall to somewhere completely random on Roshar, but just to somewhere pretty near the point that she left the Cognitive Realm. This would also make sense given the Unclaimed Hills are a kind-of appropriate distance from where she entered the Cognitive Realm, given Ivory said the perpendicularity is very distant, and given we know it took her a long time from entering the Cognitive Realm before arriving back in the Physical Realm - but it's not like she's on the other side of Roshar. For reference, here's the Roshar map. So, on these bases, and admitting there are quite a few assumptions there, I think at the time of her escape, she needed to get to Honor's perpendicularity, which was in or near (relative to Roshar) the Unclaimed Hills. Add to that the idea that Honor's perpendicularity was in that location for long enough for Ivory to say they needed to get there (I think that would be difficult if it was moving constantly over a large distance). The question is then why would it be there, as opposed to anywhere else in Roshar, at that time. Which brings me to my idea. Part of the Unclaimed Hills is wedged right between Alethkar and the Shattered Plains. Basically it's all largely north, but part is north-west, between the two regions. What is going on in the Shattered Plains at the time, that is going on a lot less everywhere else in Roshar? The active use of investiture, through both some live-spren surgebinding and of course through quite a bit trapped-spren surgebinding (in the form of many of the world's Shardblades in use there). So my theory is that Honor's perpendicularity moves around Roshar towards the place that has the most active use of investiture. Not in the form of spren, they are everywhere (except Shinovar) but their investiture is not being used, nothing is being drawn from the Spiritual Realm. Same with the Highstorms, where investiture can be trapped by spheres but is not actually being drawn on. I think when Stormlight is being drawn from the Spiritual Realm, Honor's perpendicularity basically gravitates towards it. The reason the perpendicularity isn't in the Shattered Plains is because that's not the only place investiture is being used. Most of it is there, but there is still some Shardblades and Shardplate being used, and drawing investiture through the Stormlight trapped in Spheres, in other parts of Roshar, particularly Alethkar. Which drags the perpendicularity slightly further west, and a little north. Into the Unclaimed Hills (or thereabouts). So that's that. I simply couldn't find enough evidence on this subject to be at all confident about this theory. And there are a number of assumptions. But I feel it has some backing and I wanted to put it out there for thoughts, corrections, dismantling or perhaps support.

  25. Hello, everyone. Since my username is long, you can call me cyano for short. A little about myself: I love all of Brandon Sanderson's books (obviously). SA 1 is my favorite currently. Although I'm not great at it, I love creative writing. I'm abrasive at times- if I say something rude, I'm really sorry. Been trying to be kinder recently. Now that that's all out of the way, how's everyone else?

  26. So, I was just perusing this: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1110 And on question three, it asks if Szeth was brought back with Rosharan or Nalthian Investiture, and Brandon RAFO'd it, which to me raises the question: Is Szeth a Returned? I know Endowment didn't Return him, but perhaps the "fabrial" Nale used to revive him had something to do with Nalthian Investiture, perhaps making him essentially a Returned. What do y'all think?

  27. After the prologue, we encounter Taln (the Herald of War) at the end of Way of the Kings where he cuts through the city gate using his honorblade. Next in the Words of Radiance, while he is kept in the asylum, Dalinar bonds with Taln's blade. At the end when Dalinar bonds with the Stormfather, he hears screams from the same 'blade' indicating it was a Shardblade. So, what happened to Taln's 'honorblade'? Was it swapped 'offscreen'? If so, any theories regarding the swap and who might have done it?

  28. I've noticed that @Elbereth hasn't really been saying much in the thread... So this is my encouragement to come say something! I also understand that you are GMing a game that looks like it take a lot of time and effort, but I have an idea of how much time and effort it takes, I'm GMing one that is practically the same game as that one, so I think you should be able to spend some time and come join us. Also does anyone else have any suspicions? I have already stated mine above, and would like to get some ideas in my head before I end up heading off to bed. And that is an interesting idea... @A Joe in the Bush Is it a scan role or a hey you know this thing role?

  29. Despite her initial annoyance, I see the smallest hint of a smile on Jemma's lips. I smile back warmly, and she blushes, her lips again-- Focus, Aaron! Why are you looking at her lips? You're supposed to be trying to decide whom out of the 18 we should kill. Isn't that a depressing thought... It appears that there's one Bad At Math person who didn't place a vote last cycle. I think we'd better look through the players who were on [and likely posted at least once] but didn't vote. I noticed Cloudjumper on recently; I'm not sure if he was on around rollover or not, but I think he's a possible candidate for being Bad At Math. (Not that that says anything about alignment.) I'm fairly certain the extra vote on Orlok came from Bridge Boy, as there's no reason he wouldn't use his power in that way. That accounts for the vote addition and subtraction. As far as the Librarians roles, I think it's more informative to look at the likely/ideal player distribution of Librarians and non-Librarians. There are likely 4 Hushlanders, so with a 1 in 2 chance, we can expect 2 Hushlander Librarians. There are likely 16 Freeworlders, so with a 1 in 6 chance, we can expect 2.7 (round up to 3) Freeworlder Librarians. You read that right: there are likely more Freeworlder Librarians than Hushlander Librarians, so it's actually more probable that a given Librarian is a Freeworlder than a Hushlander. So in my opinion, it's best to just ignore the Librarian roles. As for who to kill... yes, who to kill... erm.... I blink, and Jemma is looking at me expectantly. Crap. I must have looked like such a fool drifting off into space like that. "No, I understand. If this is a bad time, I can come back later. Maybe 7 PM?" Smooth, Aaron, real smooth. You blank out for a few moments thinking about murder and now you ask someone that kind of question......

  33. Quantum deals with taking principals of quantum mechanics on the observable level. Basically they are able to do funky stuff with entanglement, the whole virtual particles thing, smashing atoms together for fusion and fission (they get the whole nuclear power thing to themselves). They can control nuclear radiation and protect themselves from it. They can also precision work with atoms and smaller, become small/big, like antman. Entropy deals specifically with chaos and order. Mages can create "chaos fields" where the entropy increases exponentially and makes things crazy, and "order fields" where a state of near perfect order can be achieved. By manipulating them, they can effect luck, chance, and General randomness to a precise degree. they can also put "chaos spells" on a particular trait on an object, so that say a table will randomly appear throughout history, with a chaos spell on its place in time. Space time is the manipulation of the space time continuum. Time travel has particular rules with magic, but it can be done. Basically certain spots can only be observed, while others can be (to one degree or another) interfered with. This is due to the sentience of the universe; it wont let them kill hitler or things like that. They can also transport anywhere, speed up time, slow time, wormholes, and create closed off "bubbles" that basically seal themselves off from the rest of the universe. They do have a slight control over gravity. They also are the primary alternate dimension-hoppers, which is fun, because the alternate realities include other causality universes (different pasts), and they also include creative universes. Essentially, a series creates its own universe, which becomes more stable as it is thought out and thought about. Basically the cosmere would be an alternate reality you could hop into, or Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings, although I have yet to figure out how the whole time thing works... Water is the control of all water and liquids. This includes power over steam, water, ice, and water plasma. The destructive potential of water can be accessed through amulets, that tie to things like rivers or tsunamis. The reflective properties of ice can be manipulated, and the absorbent properties of water can be manipulated. All moisture is subject to manipulation by a water mage. They can use displacement teleportation with bodies of water. Fire is the control of plasmas and heat. All forms of plasmas and fire are under the control of a fire mage, including the magical fire (fire created by magic rather than chemical bonds). Thermal energy is under the absolute control of a fire mage, to the manipulation of all temperatures. A fire mage can telepathically control any source of fire or plasma, including the plasma content of a star. They are also immune to the effects of heat. They can use displacement teleportation with plasma sources. Earth is the power over all metals, rocks, and solids. It is also the control over most inorganic chemistry. All terrain can be manipulated, as well as any tectonic effects, including volcanos and earthquakes. Metal and rock can be telepathically controlled. Earth can control all terran planets. Sand is also under their control. Earth can use displacement teleportation; however it is somewhat dangerous. Air is the control of all gases. This includes atmospheric pressure, telepathic control over target gases, wind, storms, and sound. Air mages tend to be musically talented, with the power to vibrate air at frequencies to cause specific objects to shatter. Air mages can easily use displacement teleportation to travel anywhere that has an atmosphere or enough gases. Air mages can fly on wind, and use the wind for any sort of destructive spell. The Power over the electromagnetic force is exactly that. It includes power over light, electricty, and magnetism. With skill also comes power over electrically powered objects. Mages can manipulate light on any frequency, and also choose to view light on any frequency. These mages can also manipulate electricity and lightning. They can also manipulate magnets and magnetic fields. Any light is subject to control, or electromagnetic fields. Kinetics is the power over all moving things. To a kinetic mage, all things are moving; the earth around the Sun, and the sun around the galaxy. As such, all objects have a certain amount of kinetic energy that can be manipulated and redirected into different objects. Total momentum of the universe must be conserved, but this gives plenty of room for manipulation of motion. Life is the manipulation of most living things through the aura. All organic materials, from proteins to animals, are under the control of a life mage. The only thing a life mage cannot directly control is an intelligent being, however they can indirectly manipulate them to the effect of creating particular proteins in them or healing them. Viruses are also classified as living things, as they are made of organics. Life mages can create specialized viruses and bacteria to accomplish various tasks. They can also directly draw on auric energy to perform more conventional magic. Gravity mages control gravity. They can maipulate it to any degree, from flying to even creating weaponized black holes. Gravity mages can fly, and can also warp space time by shifting the forces of gravity. They can create gravity lensing, gravity currents, and they can warp time through their use of gravity. They do not directly control the effects gravity has, rather they have control over the gravity itself. This is the distinction between them and space time mages. Sorcery is the manipulation of magic, as defined as energy that can be "coded". Rather than working with that magic through a medium as all other mages do, they work directly with the energy itself, commanding it to do any number of things. They can use some things that other mages can do by commanding the magic to manipulate a particular medium. But they cannot manipulate those mediums to any degree of skill comparitavely with a mage of those mediums. Sorcerers make true spells, and as such can create the most impressive objects of any order, being able to create complex commands for the magic, and trap that command with an object. Some mages also study within the realm of potions. They learn various magically derived ingredients and learn to combine them to varied and often dramatic effect. They can also command ley lines, the web of streams of raw magic that spreads throughout the universe. @King Cole

  34. Thanks, appreciate the thoughtful response. I see the problems with regard to the Heralds, so I'm willing to accept if there is a long game here they are either not in the loop or were intentionally driven (temporarily?) made as a result of the shattering of the Pact in order to prevent them from spilling the plan. If the latter is true.. man what a sacrifice. On Odium leaving Threnody, I think it's not clear if Ambition or Odium decided to move their battle out of Threnodite system, or if it was a stalemate and it picked up elsewhere. My personal belief, is that Ambition was winning and so Odium left to fight again another day. Ambition (being literally influecned by his intent), may have sought to pursue Odium which would have left him weaker if he had investiture tied up in the Threnodite system and Odium was still whole. If that was the case, if we give more credit to Odium, maybe he feigned more weakness than he had to provoke exactly such an ambitious response. Not sure on any of this, but it has me thinking.

  35. I have finally read through the entirety of the COSMERE and like most other people, I am stuck on HOID. We know that Adonalsium was the original holder/vessel for the 16 shards. How the individuals splintered Adonalsium seems to be a huge mystery. Is it even possible that HOID was somehow created by Adonalsium or his vessel (which his memory is gone for some reason) in some form or fashion to look out for humanity and try to bring balance to the shards when the were taken up? The reason behind this thought is because HOID never wants to hurt anyone and he loves a great story and asks the deepest of questions. He his collecting investiture for what reason? Doing that just to take on Odium makes no sense. One would assume that the other shards could take him on as a team if need be but for one reason or another, the other shards don't or aren't inclined to. And what is the purpose of the world hoppers? They are tracking down information and HOID for some reason but that is all I know. We know HOID is important. So my guess to the reasoning is above. Please let me know what you think.

One of the charming little details i picked up reading the chasm scene is this: Shallan drew Kaladin while he was asleep, since there was no mention of her drawing his portrait while they were sitting or walking (obviously). Thats pretty cute and accurate detail. Oh, and that she dropped both her own and Kaladin's portraits, not just Kaladin's only or Kaladin's and portrait of some random girl/guy/creature/plant.

  38. It's especially interesting to contrast Dalinar's plan with what Shallan came up with just 8 days after turning up in the warcamps. Shallan's approach was much more direct and was very close to being successful. I wonder what Dalinar thought of it. As a side note, it also shows Shallan applying what she was taught to do by Jasnah - learn from history to help the present. I don't believe Dalinar thinks of Adolin as a tool - I get where you're coming from but I don't think it's quite so unfeeling. The way I see it, Dalinar's attitude towards Adolin is problematic on a number of levels. Dalinar doesn't want Adolin to make the same mistakes he did. That's fair enough but he's going further than that - he wants Adolin to live up to Dalinar's ideal of what an Alethi should be like. But he's not giving Adolin the option the choose. He's also not giving proper consideration to the circumstances. It's all very well to want your son to be a white sheep amongst a flock of black sheep but given how the Alethi actually are in practice it's more like he wants Adolin to be a white sheep amongst wolves. Ideals are all very well but there are practical limits. There's also moral and ethical considerations. So I'm hoping that Dalinar will come to the realisation that his ideals for Adolin were overly narrow and also impractical. He needs to raise the level of the whole of society. He is starting to think about these things (and has been since he started learning from the in-world tWoK book) but he needs to learn from his mistakes, broaden his perspective, think things through more deeply and so on. I'm pretty sure that Jasnah would be the best person (that we know of) to discuss these things with, though I'm sure the others can help. Shallan would probably be better at helping him realise where he's gone wrong on the small scale. On a side note, there's another parallel between Adolin and Shallan here: Shallan's father wanted her to be perfect and live up to his ideals. However, he took things to extremes and would beat up servants if she made any mistakes. This forced Shallan to "become the perfect daughter" against her will to an extreme degree, effectively forcing her to learn to act the "perfect daughter". There was no room for discussion and it was completely one-sided. Adolin gets off lightly in comparison but that doesn't make it okay either. It will definitely cause Dalinar "trouble" but also a lot of mental stress. Perhaps more so than dealing with the Everstorm! From all sorts of perspectives it will cause Dalinar problems but here's some thoughts on the legal perspective: it's all very well to say that Adolin's actions should be dealt with as the law says but Dalinar has conspicuously failed to do the same thing for Sadeas, Amaram and others. In other words, at a practical level the law is already a farce and the Alethi are long used to ignoring it. Having glaring inconsistencies in how the law is applied makes it a farce and is not the sort of thing that a strong and stable society can be built upon. So on the one hand Dalinar needs to improve this situation but on the other hand he also needs to recognise that he's part of the problem, which is also precisely what lead to Adolin's actions against Sadeas. I feel that if Dalinar doesn't realise and accept the bigger problem and come up with some good solutions then ultimately he will fail. What this means for Adolin I don't know. I don't know if it would be legal but maybe the "best" solution is to put Adolin on trial... and also Sadeas, retrospectively - and also any others who have been "getting away with it". Effectively to draw a line in the sand and say "from now on, expect the law to apply to everyone". From a practical level, if Sadeas is retrospectively stripped of his titles etc then Adolin's crimes would become smaller. One idea I like is that Adolin is found guilty and as punishment is disowned... and then Shallan takes him in and he effectively becomes her knight, and their romantic relationship continues. Hopefully then Adolin can become the person he wants to be instead of the person Dalinar wants him to be. I guess that also effectively means that he'd be marrying into her household rather than the other way around.

  39. He has a non-invested sword with personal value (and not to nit-pick, but he doesn't currently have the flute, that was last with Sadeas...)

  40. But it would be really, really fun for sure. Also, not all librarians are evil. If that were the case, the books series would be called "Alcatraz and the Librarians" rather than "Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians" right? Of course, I could be missing something terribly important that says otherwise, and that's definitely possible, considering I'm just an ignorant girl who doesn't know anything about this stuff. Well, I had quoted this because I was gonna vote on Mage as well, because bandwagoning D1 always gets some nice reactions, but now he's responded, so I don't think I should. Yup. Go for it. Voting is always good, even when it's not. It's happened before. Probably. Best way to find out if it happened this time is to vote. On a more serious note, I'm actually in agreement with Mage on this one. I'm kind of just left confused by what BB was saying at the start of the game. I don't really have any questions to ask BB that haven't already been asked, but I'll add my vote to him alongside Mage since he's the best suspect I can see. Depending on his responses, I may move my vote somewhere else, but I am a big supporter or Day 1 lynches and the kickstart to discussion they provide, so I'd like to lynch someone(I'm not a big fan of lynching an inactive C1 though, just to be clear). Also, to add to what Hero mentioned, if someone is inactive/quiet, one way to get them more involved is to PM them. Sometimes it takes revealing your role to them to get them to talk much or trust you enough to confide in you about what they're thinking, but that's a small price to pay to get their thoughts on the game, IMO.

  41. I won't be surprised lmao. One major thing I am looking forward to in Oathbringer is Hoid's story to Kaladin. Both WoK and WoR had hoid telling amazing stories to Kaladin. Maybe in oathbringer he will return and tell a story with that flute again (and possibly hit him on the head with it)

  44. Here goes J Emperor’s Soul – won’t spoil anything, don’t need to know anything and it’s a thing of beauty Hope of Elantris – big spoilers for Elantris, but it doesn’t mean you need to remember it well to get the story, just don’t read it if you want to go back to Elantris for a ‘fresh’ re-read Eleventh metal – it’s slightly pre-Mistborn so you’re fine either way (though if someone had never read mistborn I’d recommend doing it first coz it would destroy some of the slow-release answers from the first joyous read) Allomancer Jak – it’s set in the Wax and Wayne area so I wouldn’t read it before Mistborn, and it could have minor spoilers I guess for the Wax and Wayne series, but it won’t hurt if you’re simply not that fresh on those books Mistborn Secret History – huge Mistborn spoilers of course, spoilers for a range of other things (mainly systems rather than plot), and you’d miss almost all of the wonderful reveals if you’re not very Cosmere-aware – I only recommend this to people who have read every Cosmere book and are pretty into the world White Sand – standalone, can read any time (not as good as the prose in my mind, I would recommend reading the prose first if you have the time, but not necessary) Shadows – no spoilers, no knowledge necessary and you’ve read anyway Sixth of the Dusk – set a few hundred years after the recent books, no spoilers (well, not really), no knowledge needed (though you get more from it if you are Cosmere-aware) and just a wonderful story. This and Emperor’s Soul I hard recommend to everyone Edgedancer – now this is the big question. I believe Peter or Brandon recommended it as a first book for new readers. I would not recommend that in a million years (and I believe that’s the first time I’ve ever disagreed with him), to me it has big spoilers for Stormlight Archive, mainly in how the magic systems work, but also plot points, and while it’s entertaining with no former knowledge you’d certainly miss a lot of the point of some of the big plot events. If you’re just a little hazy on Words of Radiance, it should be fine to read though, you’ll still get the point and you won’t spoil a re-read of Stormlight books. In the situation you described, I’d read it. So as long as you’ve read all the Mistborn books (era 1 and 2), and you can basically remember major plot lines in Stormlight and Elantris, read it all without fear J

  45. "So, there I was, cashing in on the face of a duck bill. Sunnova lug-mudder didn't even finish his homemade colgate sandwich- and not the kind you eat for lunch either. Exactly, but day before tomorrow this'll all be rims and raisins in a skunks rear end. I should know, I was in the thick of it- and the stink was just a tailgate front page in line for a seven-o-seven. That's what I would have said before it all went cannons below- but if a ship sinks in this weather, they'll just call it the new Karlos Hlcandor. And, really, that's all there is to it."

  46. I wouldn't say that Kaladin and Shallan are opposites in everything - they both hate being caged. But yeah, apart from generally being in favour of things most people would say that they're in favour of (life, health, happiness etc) they do tend to take very different approaches. Anyway, going back to Shallan and Adolin, I don't think Shallan's killing of her mother and the effects on her father are particularly relevant to Adolin's killing of Sadeas and the effect on Dalinar. I think I get where you're coming from but we don't really know how it's going to affect Dalinar for a start. However, I would say that there's a number of parallels between Shallan's killing of her father and Adolin's killing of Sadeas. In both cases, it was something a long time in coming (from their perspective). Adolin has been agitating against Sadeas right from his very first POV chapter. Shallan clearly wasn't surprised at what her father did on that last day, given her "So it has come to this" thought. Though saying this, in both cases it was unplanned - they were responding to events. I would say that they were (somewhat) mentally prepared in advance, with Shallan going a bit further and having poison ready. In both cases, they weren't being directly threatened but responded to protect their family, who were. In both cases, they knew it was "wrong" but did it anyway, because they couldn't stand by and do nothing. (Not that they specifically think this but I think it's reasonably clear from their actions and thoughts). In Shallan's case, Balat did try but was ineffective. In both cases, it's doubtful whether anyone would truly regret the victim's death (hard to say about Ialai) In both cases, the person who "should" have taken action failed to do so. In Shallan's case, this would be Helaran. In Adolin's case this would be Dalinar. Naturally there are differences too. Emotionally, Shallan was "cold" while Adolin was "hot". There's also the practical difference that Shallan had witnesses while Adolin had none (Sadeas doesn't count). It's quite hard to predict exactly what will happen because that would depend a lot on how events unfold. Theoretically, Adolin could get away with it publicly. However, if Adolin is strongly suspected then it could cause political problems. But there will be much bigger issues going on - dealing with the Everstorm will be far more important. Shallan's reaction is hard to predict because it will depend on what she hears, from whom, in what order etc. I think it's quite likely that if Shallan hears directly from Adolin about what happened and why then she would sympathise with him. I think he would have the backing of the army. I've no idea if/when Kaladin and Jasnah will turn up to be able to influence such events. Kaladin would be quite conflicted I'm sure. Jasnah would probably wonder why they hadn't killed the guy sooner - given how she's willing to employ assassins to protect her family it would seem quite strange for her not to defend Adolin nor admonish Dalinar. What I'm hoping to see is Dalinar reflect on his actions. He was too soft on Sadeas and Amaram. I think he's over-compensating for his warlord years (or something like that). I'm not saying he should have killed Sadeas or Amaram but he was definitely negligent. He also needs to reflect on his attitude towards Adolin. He definitely needs to improve and I'm expecting that this will tie into his growth as a Bondsmith.

  48. Transgression forgiven. =P I will not say "A Player was Converted" But Sabanta will mention that she and a friend finally managed to defect, so read the writeups. Hints will be peppered throughout. Apologies, i meant to, but time got away from me. They all will from now on. Also, the rules post contains timers for the first three cycles.
