  1. To my future self, I write as a record to you, that you may look back, comfortable in your palaces, secure in your power, and recall the journey that brought you to your strength and majesty. It has been an interesting month, at the University. It has become apparent that my fellow students, and the masters, are not immediately recognising my inherent superiority and right to rule, and so I have had to begin doing this the hard way. There are a number of associations at the university, on a breadth of incredibly esoteric subjects. Why anyone was remotely interested in discussing trivialities and menial topics like music and dance, I will never understand, but I suppose it does occupy the masses. I have elected to join societies on governance, economics, and philosophy, and have offered myself up as secretary of the first. Where better to coalesce a body of single minded and easily moulded acolytes than a University, impressionable and rebellious as students are, and indeed what better way to control these bodies than through controlling their membership? I have begun sowing the seeds of revolution amongst my fellow lodgers here at the Golden Pony. They profess disinterest, and often make their excuses mid-conversation. I understand, though, that they seek only solitude, in which to appreciate the beauty of my ideas, and know that they will join me, as believers in my wisdom before too long. With great admiration, and the warmest regards, Locke Alveron, in our second month at the University. Thoughts on the game to come, but I've been focusing on trying to get over my fear of writing RP.

  2. Just wanted to share a few photos I took last week =) With how much I was outside, I swear I must've taken like 1000 pictures, and now I have to sort through them all and pick out the best ones to keep. Very time-consuming, so there's just 5 for now.

  3. LG33: Term 1, Month 2 - Nothing Ryth sat, alone, in the room at his inn, thinking about the Chancellor’s speech again. It had been weeks, but he thought about it a lot still. The meaning of life… There had to be a meaning. So why couldn’t Ryth find it? He was bright, a student of the University, with access to the greatest collection of books in the world. Every ancient philosopher was there. But their answers… nothing made sense, nothing was applicable. Friendship, love, happiness, were foreign concepts. Existing for its own sake held no appeal. What value, therefore, was there in life? None. So, when the Skindancers found him, he was easy to crack. All it took was a few words, and he was even willing to go insane. After all, he didn’t have to think about the meaning of life anymore. Insanity was far easier to bear. Noremac stood before the Horns, looking distractedly at Chancellor Varda. “I don’t know, Chancellor? I was just walking along when suddenly the banana caught flame and my cloak nearly caught fire too and… you know the rest.” The Chancellor nodded and sighed. “You may go. Thank you.” As he left, she said, “Bring in Queensteph and Stick together. No point in giving them the same punishment separately.” The two came in sheepishly and waited for judgement. “You two have been rather unwise,” Varda commented, frowning in exasperation at them. They hadn’t technically broken the rules, but they’d been fair idiots in not doing so. “You are heretofore charged with Reckless Use of Sympathy, and are to receive ten lashes at noon tomorrow. We represent the height of learning, here. Students must be dignified and respectful of their peers, and careful with the arts they have learned. You were not.” “But-” Queensteph began. “Our decision is final. You are lucky that it is not more.” “Yes, Chancellor,” they said in unison, then looked at each other and burst out laughing. Varda sighed. Kids these days. Silverblade has gone insane! Hemalurgic Headshot was brought on the Horns, but charges were dropped! Queensteph and Stick were both brought on the Horns and charged with Reckless Use of Sympathy! Term 1, Month 2 has begun. 5. I just hit 100 posts on the shard!!! That might be less than impressive to some but for a long time lurker It feels like a major accomplishment. Also life is good despite all my problems. A rare treat. And I am getting on top of my writing and getting that much closer to being an author or something. And I might get a raise. And I learned that people generally like to hunt with me in monster hunter. Other stuff to but I cant think of any right now.

  7. Um owie. why the heck are students being lashed on campus????????? i need a #safespace https://youtu.be/77sS5IuR0Gs Request Tag : reckless? more like reckYES It stinks but I mean it's better then being expelled/conduct unbecoming. So thanks guys for putting in votes last cycle. (even if you were all mostly doing it to lower tuition) I agree that I don't think we shouldn't cast random votes this time, but isn't that normal for D2? We just did randoms on D1 to lower tuitions/even the DP. I can't PM anyone for this turn(since my actions are blocked from my reckless behavior), but if anyone wants to start a PM with me feel free and I'll reply next cycle (maybe ). @Elbereth Can a player with their actions on hold still go to Imre? I wasn't quite sure what counts as an 'action'.

  10. @randuir, I want to thank you for all the help you've given me in PMs. I hope it didn't cost you too much tuition, especially since I don't think it's going to matter that much in the end. I keep thinking I'm going to have time to sit down and catch up, but the days are ticking down and becoming increasingly overwhelming, so at this point I think I'm just going to accept my fate and bow out. At everyone else. I think that Rand is village. Shortly after the game began he sent me a PM. In it he has helped me by simplifying the rules I didn't and still don't have the time to sift through and figure out on my own, particularly things like tuition and lodging. Naturally this makes me lean good-aligned, but I wouldn't discount the possibility he's doing it on purpose to get on my good side, since as a Skindancer he'd know I'm not. I would not vote on him any time soon, if I were ya'll, but I want this information out in the open so that if / when I die, it won't die with me. I'm in the process of another big move across timezones, with a pit stop in the US for some training and a quick visit to my family, and as the date gets closer I keep getting busier and busier. Therefore I've decided I'm just going to stay on the streets tonight and if I die, I die (if this happens, @Elbereth, I request that you just have my character vanish, like I said she's prone to do in the sign ups). If I do not die, however, for everyone who wants to get the tuition reduction for voting, feel free to lay them all on me next term. I don't exactly know what the consequences of accumulating everyone's vote is, but I reckon it should be enough to remove me from the game. Since I'm relatively sure nobody has caught it, Esuan is one of the Chandrian in disguise (if you've heard the rhyme, you should be able to figure out which one by the specific Chandrian's sign and name). I was planning on gradually revealing this over the course of the game via RP but I won't be able to manage it. So, if you guys want to give your players an RP excuse for voting on me, use that. Maybe one of you, in the dead of the night, can discover Esuan being visited by Cyphus (for the blue flames) and overhearing some things, than said character can involve a few others and the witch hunt can begin. I dunno, but I think it could be fun. Of course, for lore reasons I request that no one succeeds in killing or imprisoning Esuan. I think it'll be ideal if she uses some crazy magic to escape or if her fellow Chandrian rescue her before it's too late. And that's all I have to say. Good luck and have fun, everyone.

  13. Ok this is my climatic post in a series of things which have discussed various manifestations of the color red in the Cosmere. We also know that the red eyes are a specific thing going on in the cosmere, but is NOT associated with any one shard. So far we have seen: 1. The parshendi when they gain storm form, their eyes turn red. Now this may be because the stormspren is red, but it also might be this mysterious thing with the color red. Also, the spren who have been corrupted in Dalinars vision have red eyes, if I remember correctly. 2. The faceless immortals we see at the end of bands of mourning. This is interesting, because normal kandra do not have red eyes. We know virtually nothing about them, but it is certain that there is something going on here. 3. The Shades on threnody. These are also interesting, because normally their eyes are green. When they turn red, they become murderous. I think it may be possible that there is an actual change going on when the eyes turn red, a trigger for this mysterious eye thing perhaps, caused by the breaking of the simple rules. 4. The mysterious red haze coming towards scadrial. I think this may just be red to be ominous, but at the same time it might mean something that could give us a clue about the color red. It's a shard, or so we guess (I can't remember if it has been confirmed). 5. Taln's Scar, or just the Scar. A belt of red stars which I find very suspicious. I currently am of the opinion that it has to do with adonalsium shattering there, and for some reason the released investiture caused a change. Such a shattering could not have done nothing to the area it occured in. Someone also noted that threnodys star is also kind of red, and we know ambition was wounded there. As for why other stars might not be red, I figure that because honors investiture was vented through the spren, and the dominion and devotion investiture got stuffed in the cognitive realm, that perhaps their investiture didn't get the chance to change the star colors. It isn't perfect, but I think it's a workable explanation. I think at this point that the red might be investiture that has INDEPENDENTLY developed intelligence, rather than being a cognitive shadow. This is at least in the case of the eyes, although I would be happy if anyone else has other ideas. I think the red stars are from investiture from shards somehow changing the stars. I am very much against the idea that the fainlife changed the stars, simply because I still find the idea of a mold corrupting a star a little ridiculous. Overall, I think that the Red is not an accident. Perhaps there is a reason that odium is associated with red, despite it not being dependent on a single shard in all it's manifestations. I would love to hear any more thoughts anybody has about the color red and what it might be representative of. Oh and here is the WoB: Are all the red-eyed characters influenced by the same shard? No, but the red is significant. (it has meaning in the cosmere)

  15. Telar was heading home from a psychology course when he heard his name. The wind was blowing some pieces of a conversation from further down the street over to him. He strained to hear more. "...Pike's been quite helpful to that new student..." "... Wonder if he's hiding something...trying to get in people's good graces..." "...Skindancer?" Telar couldn't believe what he was hearing. Someone was thinking he might be a skindancer because he'd been trying to be helpful? That was just... no, not unbelievable. He remembered the introductory speech of the master physicker for the basic psychology course. 'The human mind might seem complex and mysterious, but through proper study the cause of every stray thought and surprising act can be determined. In the field of psychology, you'll learn about this to help those troubled by problems of the mind.' Telar quickly leafed through his book on psychology. He was pretty sure he had read about something that could cause these students to suspect him. There, on page 568. "Hunger-induced paranoia". Now if he could just get them to eat a good meal, he'd be sure they'd stop worrying about him. ...On second thought, maybe telling them that they needed to eat more would be counter-productive. Telar sighed and walked on towards the inn. He just hoped this wouldn't turn into trouble for him. Anyway, don't worry about me having gotten at tuition raise because of my activity in PM's. I'd somehow managed to post even more in the thread (no Lopen, I'm sure you counted correctly, no need to double-check). Wait, how come you lost EP if you where staying at the Pony? You only had 1 vote last turn, if I'm not mistaken, which the pony would have cancelled out. You are aware that lodgings are per term, not per turn, right? If you indicated you wanted to switch to the pony, that'll go in next turn, not this one. Also, @Amanuensis, it's a shame to see you bowing out of the game, but as usual RL stuff comes first.

Probably got a pretty strong four or a five on it, but who knows. I'm gonna spend the evening celebrating by playing RPGs and bingeing netflix.

  19. You see, the problem is your limited concept of the grander scheme. To take the circumstance of a moment as the substitute for the rest of an ever-twisting timescheme is to confine oneself to the illusion of knowledge. The Alley, may it's ovens burn perpetually, has endured trial and tribulation. At one point it consisted of a mere 3 people. But as long as the darkness of ignorance and the haze of prejudice against the Hemalurgic arts persists, we Denizens will be there to forge onward in the name of Science! So fear not, my unenlightened friend. The Dark Alley, may its darkness illuminate the Multiverse, may seem dormant, but we've harvested enough bronze ferrings to make sleep a thing of the past, and enough cadmium ferrings to make sure the sweet, toasty, cookie-scented breath of the alley shall waft enticingly through the forums for eons to come. So the question is not when we will perish, but rather, "Would you like a Cookie?"

  27. I hate the Heralds. From stupid self deprecating Shallash to abusive and misled Naln. Every single one of them is a traitor of the highest magnitude that deserves a fate worse than Sadeas, after not only did they abandon a friend to a fate far worse than death, they LIED about it. No. No forgiveness for Naln after Edgedancer from THIS angry reader. Only Taln is exempt from my anger, someone who held out for 4500 years of torture suffering the fate of TEN people, but for one man... I can't WAIT for him to come to his senses, because he's going to have one HELL of a problem with those who left him behind. Can someone please give me a reason that they should not be universally reviled by every single reader of the SA!? Pity is not acceptable in my opiion, I wouldn't have care if they had ALL given up the Oathpact, but they left Taln behind. Sacrificed him, while they went on to have their minds break NOT because of 4500 years of torture, but because they were just too irresponsible and stupid to hold it together. *Takes deep breaths* I could be wrong, but since we have a WoB that says I don't know why they deserve anything good coming to them.

  29. I actually thing there is something Realmatic going on. Remember how your spiritweb has to be a bit broken for a spren to bond with you? With an ordinary human with a broken spiritweb breaks, they have a Cognitive and Physical aspect as well, so one third of them is injured. When a Cognitive shadow has their spiritweb broken, one half of them is injured. So when their spiritweb broke, as it must have during Damnation, they were more affected by it than an ordinary human.

  30. So being new to the shard I wanted to post my questions that I will be asking Brandon this Saturday, but please espouse my theories if they are wrong as I really want to ask important questions. 1. Could a Bondsmith bond a dead spren aka a shardblade and a human to create a KR? as in "Unite Them". 2. Is Taln's scar connected to the red star in the Threnody? 3. Could the Knights Radiants summon shardplate like a shardblade? an example is in Dalinar's visions the knights radiants keep removing thier helmets withou him seeing how 4.In the Cosmere is it significant the planet that is on the end of the sword? 5. IS the Giant chasm in the oldest record of the voidbringers bonded with odium spren?

  32. I do think it's mental illness, and no that's not an excuse, but you have to understand the way that mental illness functions. About a year ago a story hit the news about a father who nearly murdered his daughter. He was described as an exceptionally loving father, who wrote songs for her and played them for her on his guitar. He was schizophrenic and had taken his meds religiously for years. For some reason they stopped working, and while the mother and daughter were napping he picked up his daughter, threw her out of the window and went outside and nearly beat her to death. When he was arrested he was trying to explain that he had to send his little girl to the sky. He's now in a mental health facility and for his sake I hope he never has to face what he did, because honestly how could anyone live with that? Now I don't think the Heralds are that severe obviously, but the function of mental illness clouds the ability to distinguish belief from reality. Nale's complete lack of emotion shows that there is more going on than simple denial. Being confronted by everything in a way that cannot be explained away by his perceived reality caused him to face what he's done, and it also caused an emotional outpouring. As good as that realization is, it's also dangerous. He's going to be very fragile mentally. Part of him is going to want to continue on as normal, and the other part is going to reject that. He's going to be at war with himself and unsure of what to trust as real. Nale is going to be erratic and dangerous. His past behavior obviously cannot be swept away and excused, but his level of actual responsibility for his actions is not a cut and dry answer. Mental illness never is. It's complicated and confusing and completely unfair. The people suffering are victims just as much as those they harm.

He always gives honest feedback on work, and never sugar coats it, and is always able to keep the class engaged. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Should I be angry with you?" "Well, you see, I was just saying that Noremac shouldn't have gotten away free. After all, his banana caught fire, but why did he have a banana in the first place? They're not native to the area, and with how easily they spoil, I can't see his parents sending him one every week. So it can't have been a banana. He must have been hiding something contraband in a normal banana skin. So Stick and Queensteph were perfectly justified when they set it on fire." "Whaa? But... why a banana skin?" "I'll figure that out later. For now, I've got a linguistics class to get to. The bullies seem to have wandered off. Thanks for the help..." "John." "William."

  38. Everyone speaks about the Heralds insanity not effecting Taln and about nothing but the betrayal... That WoB says all the Heralds are insane. Go and reread the SA Prologue, Kalak was already cracking and he observes that Jezrien is too. They were already insane when they broke the Oathpact and betrayed Taln. Taln was probably already insane in his own way before the 4500 years of torture so he's probably a huge mess (which why I think the man call Taln is definitely Taln). Talk to Psychologists and you'll learn that everything someone does who has any form of Psychosis makes rational sense. Everything. It only seems crazy because we can't see or hear the stimulus that's creating the reaction. My point in all of this is, while I understand your anger, you're judging the actions of mentally unstable people from the viewpoint of an outsider. No, what they did wasn't acceptable as we see it, but we can't understand what it was like for them, not only physically, but mentally. I'm sure that some of them are more lucid than others and therefore more culpable. I'm also fairly certain that some of them have more lucid moments in which they probably hate themselves for what they have done and would fully agree with your anger.

  39. Garshin found himself floating above a sea of mist. Thoughts entered his head from somewhere outside: "Our apologies about your former body. The terms of bringing you back in time had clear stipulations, but that entity has never been much of one for following rules. A new body will be provided for you for the next round." Next round? But even as he had the thought, he understood. Herwynbe's rambling about past contents had not been pure nonsense. There would be more trials to come, before he could return to his own time and place. To be continued...

  40. Telar hated writing letters, as he was never able to communicate what he actually wanted to say, so in the end he just stuck with the same old platitudes. With a sigh, he grabbed a new sheet of paper to make a clean copy. He wouldn't be able to do much better than he already had before the course on basic psychology would start. He'd hear all kinds of stories about students cracking under the strain of studying here, so he already knew he'd be disliking this course as well. Why did everything having to do with human welfare have to be so gruesome? @Paranoid King, could you explain some more why you thought it was necessary for you to spread some votes around to lighten your tuition? Your plan for everyone to vote wasn't necessarily bad, but because you presented it about halfway through the turn, there was little chance for everyone to weigh in on it. This has resulted in three people getting taken on the horns, and two of them having gotten lashes. Why was it necessary that you immediately tried to implement your plan, rather than giving people a turn to discuss it so tat it could be implemented in a way that actually spread the risk around?

  43. Part Three. It's about to get real. There was a storm brewing over Callingfale. Most people would have scowled, but Ranette liked the grayness. It calmed her nerves. She wasn’t officially the lawkeeper of the town, but since Bronson had disappeared, the people had come to her when they needed help. She didn’t like to be bothered, but fighting off the thieves who came through would help people stay away. Ranette pulled her hair back into a ponytail and took out her rifle. She exited her house and sat herself on the front porch. Someone would come sooner or later. She sighed, leaned back, and placed her gun to the side. Her mouth was dry. She needed whiskey. A few minutes of tranquility passed. The smell of rain and moisture was growing stronger. At the moment when Ranette decided to go back in, Yul the baker came running around the corner. He stopped at the edge of her porch. Ranette lit a cigarette. “What is it, baker?” she asked. “Bandits,” gasped Yul. “Must be a hundred of ‘em.” Ranette frowned and stood, grabbing her firearm. “How many?” she asked, sounding incredulous. The baker caught his breath and gulped down air. “I couldn’t count,” he puffed. “They were-” Several shots fired in the distance. Ranette, now becoming concerned, jumped off her porch and began to run. Yul exhaled in exasperation, but followed close behind. Ranette rounded the corner and found a very large group of bandits facing her. Guns were aimed at her in all directions. Ranette and Yul slowly raised their hands up. An older man, face weathered from years in the Roughs, deep blue eyes piercing, approached them. “Are you the lawkeeper for Callingfale?” he asked, voice a rich baritone. Ranette nodded. “For the time being.” The older man smiled amiably. “Not anymore,” he declared. “My name is Coburn and I am the leader of the Surefires. And we are now in charge of the township of Callingfale. No leaving, and no insubordination from the people.” Ranette glared at Coburn, beginning to burn iron. She focused on the men’s guns and Pulled. Firearms were wrenched out of bandits’ hands, and shouts of surprise and alarm rose. Coburn, however, calmly raised his pistol and shot Yul in the head. Everything went silent. Nobody moved. Yul’s body lay in the dust. Coburn slowly put the gun to Ranette’s chin. “I will pull this trigger,” he whispered. “I would rather keep you as collateral, but if you insist on being an agent of Ruin, then continue, by all means.” Ranette tried to Pull at the gun, but nothing responded. It was aluminum. Damnation. She turned off her Allomantic reserve. Coburn nodded in satisfaction. “Good,” he said. “I’m glad to see that you can be reasonable.” Ranette was startled. Was he a Seeker? Somehow, that just made the man seem worse. He holstered his gun and turned to his men. “Gather the people in the center of the town,” Coburn bellowed. “I need to explain our rules.” ***** The people of Callingfale were mostly compliant. Those who weren’t were shot. They soon were gathered into the town square, afraid of what might come. Coburn stood on a crate, facing them. He began his address. “Good afternoon, people of Callingfale,” he said. “I am Coburn, the leader of the Surefires. We have come to liberate you from your demons. We will keep you safe. But, of course, we have some regulations that must be followed. For no civilization is complete without order.” “Order?!” exclaimed a man near the front. “This isn’t order, this is tyranny!” Coburn regarded the young man with a bemused look. “What’s your name, son?” he asked. “Horst,” snapped the man. “And I’m not bowing down to a man like you.” Coburn nodded sagely. “That sounds fair,” he mused. “Step over here, son.” He gestured to his right. The belligerent Horst stepped up defiantly, gazing up at him. Coburn drew out his gun and shot him twice. A scream rang out, and several people began to yell. A young woman ran to the corpse and cradled it in her hands, tears streaming down her face. A bandit reached out to pull her away, but Coburn raised a hand. “Rebels will not be tolerated,” he cried out. “Curfew is at sundown. Anyone caught past the deadline will be shot. I will also tolerate no use of Allomancy and the like. Is that clear?” The townspeople continued to shout and move about in confusion. Coburn sighed and shot the woman holding Horst. The crowd went silent. “Is that clear?” Coburn repeated. “I am not a patient man.” The crowd murmured assent. Ranette stared at the bodies lying in the dirt. She knew that she needed to do something, and that she needed help to do so. She just needed a way to escape first.

  44. So I've discovered a pretty cool search engine...it's called Ecosia, and for every search you do it PLANTS A TREE.

  45. "Everyone with the skill or power" also includes any Shards that happen to be in the area, so "out of Scadrial" the danger has not abated. In fact, it probably increased. Hemalurgy. Not even once.

  46. Sanderson Ruined a lot more words than that for me: awesomeness, anything having to do with sticks, the Waxing and Waning of the moon...

  47. Edit: I used the concept art from Ben McSweeney that's on the Wiki for this.

  48. Hello. In this thread I posted my proposition of cosmere CR map along with speculation where Silverlight might be, but the thread is a bit old and not a busy one, so I decided to post a new topic, to induce a brainstorm. So. Just quickly: The map was created by rotating the star map by 90 degrees. Rosharan shadesmar expanses theories seemed to be fitting with it. The idea of Ashyn and Braize access via nexuses comes from the fact that in cognitive they would be very close to Roshar, much closer than planets dozen systems away, like Scadrial, that can be reached by the Expanse of the Vapors. The distances are of course irrelevant, as they get condensed in the cognitive. I just drawn over the star map. The star map is an artistic vision, so the directions are not perfect either. Cardinal Directions Because they exist in minds of sentient life forms, I believe they exist in the Cognitive realm. Also, Nazh tells Kelsier to go west to find IRE. Another thing is the order of planets in the planetary system. I don't think they would move around much, so I organized them the way the planet closest to the sun would be closer to north in cognitive. I am not too attached to this idea though. Btw, I think the Southern Scadrial is also south on this map. Pathways I've drawn potential pathways. Note that there is no direct pathway from Roshar to First of the Sun - I think it goes through Braize, just like a path from Sel to First of the Sun goes through Nalthis. I was also thinking if Expanse of the Broken Sky might in fact lead to Threnody, while Taldain could be accessed via Ashyn, but I concluded that there is no reason to complicate the matter, because we lack information anyway. I guess the only way to not get a RAFO on that would be to show this to Brandon and hope he is impressed enough to clarify Dor pipeline So IRE has a pipeline through the cognitive realm that transports Dor. And their fortress was to the west from Scadrial. I just drawn the straight line from it to Sel. I know the fortress isn't exactly to the west, with Sel being north-west from Scadrial, but neither my nor the original star map are super accurate, so we should probably not fixate on this too much. Silverlight Now this is just a wild speculation. > The star map is a visualization as imagined from Silverlight, not an effect of space exploration > Silverlight is solely in the cognitive realm > Cognitive realm is entirely flat > Therefore there is no way Silverlight is in a plane that allows this view. I think the star map was made by someone who simply traveled the Sardworlds and mapped them in the Cognitive realm. Silverlight is supposed to be a meeting point. Therefore I think it should be somewhere between the major Shardworlds. I've drawn a few ideas: a: Between Sel, Taldain and Roshar - that would be between the three most cosmere-aware/realmatically-aware planets (excluding Yolen). b: All roads lead to Rome Scadrial, so I thought Silverlight would have a convenient path to Scadrial as well. And Taldain, except for Yolen, is the first Shardworld with cosmere-aware people. I find this one to least likely though. c: My favourite. Not only would that put Silverlight in the most densely populated area, but also on the way of IRE's Dor pipeline, which, I believe, would be quite convenient for Sel-descendant people. d: Silverlight would be in proximity of Yolen. Many people believe The Scar is the location of Yolen. If it is, Silverlight would be between The Scar and the rest of the Shardworlds. I'm interested to hear what do you think and what ideas about Silverlight you have may contradict my map
