  2. Brightlord Meridas, why are you always butting heads with Kaladin? Because I Am-a-ram. Why do they call him Gaz? Because his 'gaze' is incomplete! I think I've just joined a new Radiant order: the Groanmakers! We are bonded to punspren, and all our Ideals are horrible puns.

  4. This theory is that the phrase 'stones unhallowed' has more to do with the worldbuilding in Roshar than thought. There are many lines, moments and opinions in Stormlight that suggest there is a deep (time lost) ideology directing the Shin to not walk on Stones unhallowed. I can go through the book if necessary, though I'm sure the members here are familiar with them anyway. My theory here is that the stones that are 'hallowed' are a way for Odium to connect to individuals on Roshar, in much the same way that Ruin used spikes to impersonate/talk-to various mistborn ppls and used the non-metal prophesies to manipulate the world. This theory is that the Shin live on stones 'unhallowed' (and that this is an actual ancient truth), but Szeth as truthless was given a 'hallowed' stone and commanded to obey the holder. I believe this is a similar corruption (as Ruin) by Odium. This is what allows Odium into his head aka the screams in the darkness. we have a WoB that the screams are real (to him at least). Since he died, Szeth hasn't heard the screams (please check me on this, but make sure he wasn't on stone at the time). He believes it's because he died, but maybe it's because he gave up the stone. A lot of this is hidden in the history of Roshar and I believe Brandon will unveil it in coming pieces and tie it into the desolations in the same way as Mistborn. If you've read 'Mistborn the secret history; you'll have a good idea of what I'm thinking. I'll add one last thing here. The Shin have the honourblades. If kept anywhere, shouldn't the cosmic design arrange them to be held where Ati can't see them? (yes I know what I did there). The Stormfather fades in the Shin land, stones are unhallowed and they have the honourblades? Coincidence? Or design? (My theory is design from when the Heralds were sane).

  5. I've always assumed that 'Voidbringer' is a very large and diverse category of creatures, and that the Parshendi are just a small part of it. They're acting as the forerunners of the Desolation. Soon, though, hordes of more fantastical void-monsters will start crossing over from Braize. (or maybe Ashyn. Who knows?)

  7. Day 5: Kittiesh! NNNOOOOO! Rin felt terrible for his part in yesterday’s events, even if it had been the right thing to do. It had been the right thing… right? His situation with Nicki had just spiraled further and further out of control as the days went on. He still remembered when she had first stepped into his shop, demanding pewter as if she would die without it. Then asking for metal spikes; with an extra heaping of potential violence if he didn’t accede. She hadn’t seemed like a bad person back then, just one full of passion. But as the days wore on and more people died, things began to change. Then she had brought that body back. Suddenly, her passion took on a more sinister aspect to it; until he just had to say something! That was the way such things were handled, right? So why then, did he still feel guilty? He sat in his shop, pondering and debating this back and forth in his head all night. His only companions a lantern for light and a cup of tea. Because of this, he was still awake when the person arrived. They entered through the front door, not even bothering at stealth. Rin looked up at them when the door clacked shut. “Ah, so I assume that it’s my turn then?” The figure nodded. “Very well then,” Rin said and he put the cup on the counter next to him. “I suppose this answers my question and now it’s time for me to do penance. Just- just please make it quick.” The figure nodded again and raised their hand in front of them. Sitting in their palm was a singular coin. Before Rin could blink, the coin zipped through the air and hit him in the forehead. The figure left as Rin’s body slumped to the floor, never saying a word. Matilda couldn’t even begin to believe her luck! Why, just the other day, she had been stumbling through one of the alleys, looking for one of her cats, Whiskey-ers (he was a cousin to Mr. Ale-ick Purrsnickles and Scotch-ish McFluffy Paws) when she happened to nudge something with her foot! When she bent down to investigate, she found a full coin pouch buried in the ash! “Oh, happy day Kittiesh! Shoon we’ll have all the kittiesh and we’ll shtart our own cat shan-chu-wary. An’ no one will bother ush again!” Thus it was a terribly drunk Matilda who stumbled through the streets later that night. Her hands were full of her “kittens” and they clanked and meowed together with each wavering step. She was so drunk, that she didn’t see the person sneaking up behind her, a dagger in their hand. They were almost on top of her when Matilda tripped on an uneven cobblestone (or it could’ve been perfectly flat, but Matilda thought of it as uneven for the rest of her days). *Swish!* The knife flew through the space where Matilda’s neck would’ve been just seconds before. As Matilda stumbled, she lost her grip on one of the bottles she was cradling. “Button Nose Rum-my!” She cried as she tried to catch the falling bottle. This caused her to bend down and again, *Swish!* The knife hit nothing. The bottle crashed against the ground and shattered. The alcohol inside turn the ash into a dark black paste. “Kittiesh! NNNOOOOO!” She crouched on the ground, the other bottles spilling from her arms, but luckily, not breaking. *Swish!* And this time, after being thwarted so many times, the person behind her cursed, finally alerting Matilda to their presence. “You!” Matilda cried as she pointed a gnarly, old finger at the person. She had tears running down her cheeks. “You did thish! You hurt my kittiesh! What’d they ever do to yoush?” She threw an empty bottle at her assailant. “Leave my kittiesh alone, you nashty evil pershon, you!” The figure dodge the bottle with ease, but the commotion was causing other people to stir and soon enough, there would likely be more eyes than they were comfortable with watching the scene. So as Matilda cried in the streets, her attacker fled. Night 5 has ended and Day 5 begins! You have 48 hours. Doc12 was attacked! They were a Regular Villager. Madagascar was attacked but survived! Good luck! Player List

  10. Hold the secret that broke the Knights Radiant. You may need it to destroy the new orders when they return. - WOR Chapter 84 epigraph (decoded) Now, as the Windrunners were thus engaged, arose the event which has hitherto been referenced: namely, that discovery of some wicked thing of eminence -- WOR Chapter 38 epigraph These epigraphs strongly imply that the Recreance was precipitated by the KR discovering some terrible fact. It doesn't seem to have been tied to any corruption that may have crept in to the Orders (the taxes for travel through Urithiru, etc.) Now, here's something anomalous. The Desolations devastated Roshar, killing something like 90 percent of the human population and knocking technology back to the stone age, at least sometimes. Yet when Honor was Splintered (after the Recreance -- he remembers it in the visions) there seems to have been no such cataclysm. Aharietiam is still seen as "the Last Desolation", which it wouldn't be if another apocalyptic event had occurred since the Recreance. Similarly, Odium Splintered Devotion and Dominion on Sel. But humanity on that planet survived; he didn't destroy the planet, depopulate it, or warp it into some kind of a hellscape. So why the devastating, lethal Desolations on Roshar before the Recreance? Because humans were fighting on Honor's side. Odium doesn't really care about killing humans, except incidentally to getting at the Shards; nothing much below the power-level of a Herald registers on his "radar screen" Therefore, my proposal for the Secret That Broke The KR is: Honor's been feeding us into a meat grinder for thousands of years to protect Cultivation and a couple of alien gods we'll never see. If we let Odium win, nothing bad really happens to humanity. Honor betrayed us. Our spren have been in on it, all along - they're pieces of Honor. So let him die.

  11. Based on the recent WoB that the Heralds are a form of Cognitive Shadow, is it possible that their Honorblades are a form of Hemalurgic spike? Not in the sense we've seen before in Mistborn, but something using similar principals to reattach their thread to the Physical Realm? My basic thought is that when the Heralds die, they actually die, but because they're so Invested, they don't vanish into the Beyond, or whatever it's called, but stick around in the Cognitive Realm on Braize. Here their Cognitive Shadows are tortured, but they suffer no physical damage, similar to when Hoid beat up Kel in SH. Eventually, they all return to Roshar using their Honorblades to re-attach themselves to a physical body. This might explain why the Honorblades vanish when the Herald dies, since it's bound to their soul.

  12. That could also help, but it wouldn't confirm Arinian. It's possible that if he was Spiked, he would decide that the trust that he got from bussing a teammate would be worth the loss of said teammate. Aman did that in LG17. It backfired on him, but the fact is that he still did it. EDIT: Nicki’s eyes fluttered open. What… what had happened? Where was she? She looked around, but only saw rooftops floating on a bed of pink mist. The sun was almost up. She reached out to touch a curl of mist, but it shied away from her. Nicki’s arm flopped back onto the ground. Nicki groaned and sat up. Her chest throbbed. She looked down and saw a few inches of gleaming spike protruding from her chest. Right. So she was still alive. Nicki gingerly felt at her chest and hissed in pain when a finger brushed the skin around the spike. Somehow, it hurt even through her pewter. Nicki caught sight of a silhouette standing near her. The Terrisman! She kicked at its legs and it grunted. She took advantage of the pause to scramble to her feet. Nicki punched the figure in the face. Then she grabbed its shoulder and brought its torso down onto her knees. It shrieked in pain. Nicki turned and shoved down onto its neck until it hit the ground. She pinned its arms and leaned over towards its ear. “Take your book back,” she said. “Tell your master that he’s not getting my spike. If he wants to try, I’ll just have to kill whoever he sends.” Nicki stood up and stomped on the figure’s arm, which gave a satisfactory crunch under her boot. Let that be a lesson to the Terrisman. Nicki retrieved her clothes and put them on. They were a little tight around the spike, so she yanked down on the neckline. Then she ran off the edge of the roof and hit the ground running. She needed to find Rin again, so she could test out what metals she could burn now. Sorry Len. Cassius was an admirable citizen who got in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hero, does Herwynbe have Feruchemy? I'd be interested to see how a fight went between him and Nicki.

However the shtressh of being called a witch made Matilda an alcoholic. She drank sho much she forgot to feed her catsh and a bunch of them died. Thish haunted her for the resht of her life. Then Matilda got shuper old and found hershelf in a dreadful village where shomeone tried to kill her. Moral: Drink more.

Can we agree that super-biased, one-sided stuff only leads to a deepening of the societal divide? I'm sick of the name calling, mud-slinging, poorly researched and completely unbalanced stuff flying around the internet (from all sides of the political spectrum. Yes, I mean yours random citizen reading this. I also mean mine.) Can we just, stop? Like, if you see something absurdly one-sided, just don't share it? And, like, if your friends do, call them on it? Super politely? That would be great, guys.

  20. Art by Sunbird, Part 3! This post will contain my finished art from 2012 to my latest work as of January 22, 2017. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to draw recently, so "my latest work" is almost a year old at this point. From January 13, 2012, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. If I had to pick one of my drawings that I think is my absolute best, it would probably be this one of Loki. I finished it June 4, 2012, after The Avengers was released in American theaters. I did another Avengers portrait later that summer: Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, completed on August 26, 2012. Last Avengers fanart for this post, I promise. XD Robert Downey Jr as everybody's favorite billionaire playboy philanthropist inventor, Tony Stark. (Not Iron Man, though, because I didn't draw him in the armor. ) I finished this one April 6, 2013. Most people here probably won't recognize this next character, although you might know the actor: vampire PI Mick St John from the one-season TV show Moonlight, played by Alex O'Loughlin. (Mr O'Loughlin has also been in the TV shows Three Rivers and Hawaii Five-0 (the 2010 reboot), as well as the movie August Rush.) Funny story about the history behind this drawing: I started working on it in like early/mid 2013, but it got buried and forgotten in the chaos of my move to Utah for college. It wasn't until Christmas break 2015 that I finally found it again and resumed work, finishing December 21, 2015. My last three portraits are the drawings that I have also posted to the official Shard fanart gallery. After I finished reading Calamity, I just kinda got an itch to do Reckoners fanart and neglected homework and sleep to work on these. XD Drawing book characters for which I had no photos was in some ways easier and in some ways harder than drawing movie/TV characters from reference photos. It was easier because I didn't have to make my people resemble anyone specific, but it was harder because I had to figure out the lighting and clothing pretty much just from my brain. First, my imagining of Obliteration, completed Feb 20, 2016: Of course, no collection of Reckoners fanart is complete without Prof! Completed Feb 21, 2016. (I think I may have matched my personal speed record with this drawing--one day from start to finish, same as Spike.) My last Reckoners fanart and the most recent drawing I've finished is Mizzy. After I finished Prof, I looked back at my collection and realized it was sadly lacking in female characters, and I hadn't drawn a single person of color. I felt bad and picked Mizzy as my next subject, completing her portrait Feb 27, 2016. So that's pretty much all my stuff that I consider good enough to share on the Internet. Comments, questions, suggestions, limericks...? I'd love to hear all your thoughts.

  21. Screaming woke Cassius from his bed. Not again! Not another Coinshot, please!... He flung himself out of bed, pressing his hands against the window and feeling it, searching for a crack that could indicate that the screaming was his own. Nothing; the glass was smooth. That taken care of, Cassius threw on a robe and rushed for the door, leaving it unlocked behind him as he hurled himself out into the mists. Captain Cassius, as he sometimes preferred to call himself, valued decisiveness over caution. The screaming stopped, but not before Cassius had determined that it had come from a low rooftop above him. He bounded onto a crate that leaned haphazardly against the wall, grabbed the rooftop's edge, and pulled. Something in the robe ripped, but Cassius kept it on. It would not do to be scandalous at a time like this. His muscular biceps clenched, and he practically flew onto the roof. It was an awful sight to see. Nicki's body lay on the rooftop. From her chest protruded a length of shiny metal spike. She was still breathing, but it was ragged and shallow. He didn't know if she would make it or not. But what was Cassius supposed to do? He couldn't get help; there wasn't time, and his robe was not exactly formal material. He didn't know much first aid; he once had had a girlfriend who was a surgeon, but it was she who had done the first aid on him (long story). The only thing that he could think of doing was performing rescue breathing, but realized that that would appear even more scandalous then busting into someone's quarters wearing nothing but a ripped robe. And so Cassius just stood there on the rooftop, watching Nicki's body struggle for life. @Arraenae What happens is completely up to you.

  22. Nicki paced on a rooftop, quietly seething. Rin had betrayed her. Rin! She’d thought he was a friend! He’d had no right to tell the rest of the town what she was doing with Pikker’s body. And that Ryth, the one who had threatened to call the guards -- he was the worst of them all. Nicki clenched her fists. That spike was hers. They had no right to say that she had to relinquish it. She’d gotten to it first, before they had even stopped gawking over the dead body. The man the spike had come from was dead, so why did they care about what happened to the object that had killed him? It wasn’t like they were trying to save their fathers from being an Inquisitor. Nicki felt for her pockets and breathed a sigh of relief when she felt both the spike and the booklet. At least she still had both of those. Why was the Terrisman so desperate to have the spike? Didn’t he see that Nicki couldn’t afford to trade away a lead for something that might have been faked? Nicki took out the little booklet. She still needed to read through it to see what it said. She inspected it. The leather cover was cracked, and little flakes fell off when Nicki opened it. She flipped through the pages, which were yellowed and dog-eared. Nicki held it up to the light of the moon and began to read. Some time later, Nicki reached the end of the book. That was it? She flipped through the pages again, but found nothing new. The booklet had no more to say. According to the little book, the trauma of having spikes shoved through one’s body caused a person to Snap. Spikes that were prepared a certain way, when placed in some body parts, could bestow Allomancy and something called Feruchemy. Even if someone had already Snapped, the spikes could cause someone to Snap again. Multiple spikes let someone have multiple powers. The book answered the mystery of how Nicki’s father had Snapped into a Mistborn after already being a Seeker, but not much else. It didn’t explain why Nicki’s father was serving the Steel Ministry as an Inquisitor, or how the spikes that caused people to Snap were prepared. Still, the booklet seemed legitimate. Nicki had to test it out to see if it would work. Nicki took out the spike she’d found at the man’s dead body. It glinted silvery in the light, with a point sharp enough to draw blood. At the time, Nicki had assumed that it was the murder weapon. What if it actually had made him Snap into a Misting like the book had described? There was only one way to find out. Nicki shut her eyes and tried to remember which body part the man had pulled the spike out of. It had been stuck through somewhere around his torso… his heart. The spike had been stuck through his heart. Off went Nicki's shirt and undergarments. She didn't want to get an infection from a bit of cloth stuck in her. She ripped off the sleeves -- she could use them as bandages to staunch the bleeding. Nicki sat down on the rooftop. She felt around her chest for her heartbeat and pressed the tip of the spike over it. Then she took a breath and burned pewter. This was it. The moment where she saw if the Terrisman's book was truthful or not. Nicki shoved the spike in. It slid into her flesh painlessly. The spike hit something hard -- probably a rib. Nicki kept pushing on the spike, and the rib cracked. Searing pain flashed through Nicki, like she’d been set on fire. Nicki screamed. She hunched over and clutched her chest. By the Lord Ruler, the spike burned. She hadn’t felt pain like this in years. Nicki flared pewter, and the pain died down by an infinitesimally small amount. Lord Ruler... it hurt... Nicki's throat went raw from screaming. Rusts, even pewter was failing her now... Nicki’s screams died down into a choked sob. She fell onto her side and curled up into a ball. This… this had been a mistake. The book must be wrong. Nicki blacked out. Note: This is not a confession. Nicki might be Spiked now, but that doesn't mean I'm an elim. Also, Hero, sorry for not giving you either the spike or the booklet. Nicki had to see it for herself.

  24. Art by Sunbird, Part 2! During the summer of 2011, I started trying my hand at people portraits--usually of my favorite movie or TV characters. Thankfully I have definite dates for most of these drawings, unlike the ones in my first post. I started with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, completed Aug 28, 2011. And the very next day I redid Matt Smith in Corel Painter with a "blunt chalk" brush, adding in a spacey background. Once during an assembly in the gym at my high school (September 2011), I brought a sketch pad and pencil and did a quick contour drawing of a guy sitting a little ways in front of me. This was the result: More Doctor Who fanart! David Tennant this time. Original colored-pencil version completed Sept 18, 2011, with the Corel Painter version almost a month later on Oct 16. In between the colored-pencil and digital versions of David Tennant, I drew this graphite sketch of a Barn Owl in a barn for my art class. Completed October 13, 2011. I decided I didn't have enough villains in my superhero collection, so I did one of Mystique. (Fear not; she's wearing clothes, unlike in the X-Men movies.) Completed December 3, 2011. Just two more for this post, I think--both characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I set a personal speed record with Spike--I started early in the morning before school with the contours and had finished adding full color by dinnertime. I did this December 5, 2011, but it's still one of my favorites. Ok, last drawing for this post: Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, completed sometime in the days leading up to Christmas 2011.

In any case, I don't recall a moment when he is using stormlight, so I'm not sure what you are referring to. That would be pretty amazing. I imagine it would be like his conversation with the cognitive entity in Secret History, except a bit more two-sided.

  32. There's a fairly big issue with that thing, at least if this aspect of Vorinism is accurate. Proving Day. Quoth the Coppermind, Proving Day is believed to be how the Heralds were chosen. Shallan's statement of " Your demands are about as reasonable as the ones made of the Ten Heralds on Proving Day!" implies that they were asked to do difficult, maybe impossible tasks. It's not a guarantee that they didn't die in some way, but it makes it less likely. Elantrians are not cognitive shadows, as they don't die when initiated. Credit to Khyrindor for asking the question. I have no argument about the rest of that sentence. Last thing, we cannot yet prove if this is the same for the Heralds, or if normal people are an "imperfect host" (implying that they were made specifically for the Heralds, which makes a lot of sense)

  34. Regarding what Shallan could be up to: I'm sure she'll be multi-tasking as always but for her main/official task, the description in the summary does follow-on from things that were set up previously. Remember that Jasnah wanted to find original sources in Urithiru that hadn't been tampered with. Shallan should be interested in making more sense of the in-world Words of Radiance book. How much is there in Urithiru and how much is readable after all these years is another matter, though the climate should help with preservation. Navani and Shallan (with Pattern) are both working on learning to read Dawnchant which I'm sure will pay off at some point. It might seem redundant to have two characters arrive at this from two different angles but it's actually really handy in terms of validating the understanding - if two separate people using two different methods can translate the same text in a similar way then that would significantly improve the trust in the translation.

  38. I guess i am a literalist in what Dalinar saw. I think that is why Dust Bringers hate being called by that name, due to it being too much like what was thrown against them in the previous Desolations. Also, I think that even more than Ruin's desire that all should end in it's entropic conclusion, the Hate of a trapped God would bring the complete devastation to the offending world-- dust swirling into the void. I guess we shall see, but the horror of the vision is what focused Dalinar on the possibility of fighting Odium. I think I'll stick with it till I get something else as a better hint.

  39. I really like this theory. Especially, as someone mentioned, that it could fit with the KR also go to Braize theory. I don't have much to add really, except that if this theory is true, I'm not sure how this revelation (the Honor part alone) could 'destroy the new orders when they return.' I feel like Kaladin/Dalinar would hear Honor used to be feeding KR to the meat grinder and go 'Well that sucks, but we all need to stay alive and have a civilization to save, so KR assemble.' If the going to Braize part is added to the OP, then that could help shatter some of the new KR.

  40. Absolutely. And when this goes to print I will be happy to leave stunning reviews all over Goodreads and Amazon! Maybe not about scrotums...although noting my sense of humor, it will probably be about scrotums. It's a good word. Probably not. I do want to chime in here on Moth. I love the character because she is so multi-facuceted and real. She isn't a caricature of adolescence as portrayed by popular media, she is, in as much as she can be, a real person. She has traits consistent with what we know of her upbringing, is complex, and, like many youths in this age range, both endearing, cold / calculating, and frustrating all at the same time. I have a pretty short fuse when it comes to females in this age group in particular, because so many writers, both male and female, want to boil these young women down into either likable or 'mean girl' stereotypes. It's a super complex age and girls are very dynamic during it, and I see that in Moth. She is probably your most consistently written character, @Robinski, which makes me guess that you have a daughter/neice/female relative/associate in or around this age group that you are drawing from. I think Moth is exquisitely portrayed currently, and look forward to reading more of her exploits.

The first is that he totally thought of this and decided that would be too powerful for a main character, so wanted to limit him, or he's providing a place for Wayne to grow as a character, ie he can overcome his guilt spawned handicap and pick up a gun with confidence just in time to save some people's lives in an epic way or something.

  43. So one of the alien races in my setting communicates in an entirely visual language. They're basically like cuttlefish-velociraptors, and they talk by flashing their skin colors in complex patterns at each other. I think it's a pretty neat way to set them apart from humans, personally. My one issue for a while now has been the struggle with naming conventions. When aliens with vocal languages name a planet, it's been easy for me to simply make up a gibberish word that sounds right for the setting. I can then state that this gibberish word is just a part of their language, or it's the name of some mythological hero, or whatever. Not so with the cuttlefish-velociraptors. Because their language is based on color, I can't just make up gibberish words for their names. For a while, this gave me a lot of trouble. I was still struggling with it until about yesterday, when I finally realized that this wasn't a problem--it was an opportunity. All I need to do is make sure their names for themselves and their planets are simple words. For instance, there's a lush green world in their domain with abundant physical resources they've fought over, and this world is called Temptation. I can name every planet in their part of space with a cool one-word name. Temptation. Verdant. Idyll. Depth and Delusion. Maybe those don't sound very cool to anyone else, but I'm pretty happy with the way things are coming together for me.
