  1. Reviving/Necro-ing this post from the dead because I now have a direct WoB about this for both Steel and Iron lines. Yes, both can be used to identify specific metals, and it is not limited to only savants. This seems to be something any misting or mistborn could do with enough practice.

  2. Day 2: Unquenchable Fire Quintus sprinted across the beach. First of the Sun was a dangerous place, and an experienced worldhopper - even one who had once been trained by Hoid himself! (though that was long ago, in a life so far gone that it seemed more a dream) - could find themselves in a great deal of trouble if they allowed themselves to become complacent. As he had. The great sea creature heaved itself up onto the searing hot sand, vast maw snapping at its prey. Quintus rolled into the jungle, breathing heavily. The leviathan slid back into the deeps, leaving a track in the sand. He breathed a sigh of relief, almost calming down. That had been careless of him. He would have to pay more attention to such things in the future. The news of his old master’s return had apparently disturbed him more than he knew. He was still uncertain of how to respond to it. His instincts almost saved him. Without even knowing why, Quintus rolled to his side. A bolt of fire, as hot as the inside of a star, streaked past him, igniting a twenty foot section of the jungle where it struck. Pulling out of his roll, he frantically searched for his attacker. He caught a brief glimpse of a shadowed figure, eyes alight with hatred more powerful than anything he had ever known. Then the second bolt of fire struck his chest, and he saw no more. Quintus (Jondesu) was killed! His role and alignment will be revealed when he passes to the Spiritual Realm! Jack Tormander (A Joe in the Bush) has been Returned! Day 2 has begun. As noted in the signup thread, it will be extended for 24 hours, and will end at 2:00 PM, December 26th (Mountain Time) The vote has been tallied, and the players overwhelmingly voted for 24 hour nights. All future nights in this game will remain at 24 hours unless specifically extended. Player List: 1. Assassin in Burgundy - First of the Game 2. Master Elodin - Second of the Signups 3. Jondesu - Quintus 4. AliasSheep - Kelen Taldar 5. Darkness Ascendant - Kaldain Selblessed 6. A Joe in the Bush - Jack Tormander Returned 7. Doc12 - Silence 8. Kynedath - Desten Kyde 9. TheMightyLopen - Kaloo 10. Straw - Malum Farcimen 11. Young Bard - Serol 12. Magestar - Magestar 13. Alvron - Lorna 14. Dalinar Kholin - Sanya 15. Harambe - PUNisher 16. I_am_a_Stick - Stic 17. RubiksCube - cubefright archive 18. DroughtBringer - Ralar 19. Araris Valerian - Aralis 20. Arinian - Arinian 21. Zephrer - Tardeick 22. Conquestor - Farallen Oniz 23. Sart - Sam Trudite 24. Aonar Faileas - Nilan Izenry 25. Elenion - emissary of Mandos 26. Kasimir - Tenth of the Dusk

  3. As the last surviving representative of House Urbain (*cough* the House of Paranoia *cough*), I'd like to erase the possibility of Elodin-Joe collusion by asking Elodin to do a vote-swap on the next day. Good way to forestall doubters too, I think, since Elodin's investment should vanish whether he does or doesn't do anything (leaving aside the "Who is Cultivation?" question.) [Actually, GMs, could I confirm if Cultivation's investment also has a time limit or whether it doesn't? This is not clear to me from the rules text. @Seonid, @Elbereth] This, of course, is me assuming no one starts as an Elantrian, but I find this a tad likely, since some minor roles are bestowed by Endowment. (Technically, this doesn't rule out the possibility he could be Hoid, or Endowment, but then, at least it sets up one plausible case for us. I see the latter case as being less likely.) This would also prevent an Awakener from having to out themselves. (I think.) Other than that, I really don't see what would be the point of resurrecting Joe at this point in time. First, I generally like more robust confirmation of a player's allegiances before we do something like Return them. I'm not seeing this here - just chains of assumptions that have only been weakly tested. (One method of testing has been suggested above.) Even if Joe is Cultivation, returning him to life won't give him back his Shard, will it? It'll just make him a big, honking target screaming, "HEY, I'M A PRETTY MUCH CONFIRMED VILLAGER, COME CONVERT ME!" to practically everyone, including Hoid, Odium, and Autonomy. Conversely, if you think Hoid, Odium and Autonomy won't find a returned Joe attractive, the problem is that the possibility still exists, since it essentially becomes about trying to outguess everyone who can convert people in this game. In a conversion game, scans and confirmation are a commodity, always offered in degrees, never in absolutes. All the more so for one like this. So I don't really see the point in that reasoning. (Of course, if you think Joe is a good player and you want him alive because of that, then that's a different story.) Now, it's not to say we can't win with Odium and Autonomy, but the worrying question is whether Odium and Autonomy see their play as being with us. If it doesn't, then we're still in an awkward position anyway - and it's just worsened once you throw Team Hoid into the mix. P.S. Let's keep an eye on those who voted. Squabbling over Day 1 lynches aside, I have a feeling at least some of those who voted were people who really wanted to receive an extra action. Tenth of the Dusk slipped away. He was not appalled or shocked: not entirely. You did not live years on Patji without learning there were questions which need not be asked, without an appreciation for swift killing efficiency. He had his eye on another, though. He knew a fellow hunter when he saw one. For now, he kept Kaikoa close. He did not want to lose hold of him, in this place. He had come to the feast only because he was asked to. This place - this city - it was not his. He did not think he knew how to feel comfortable, even now, within the dense buildings of a city, rather than the lush, killing jungles of the Pantheon islands. They did not frighten him, those hulking men in gleaming metal shells. He had known greater terrors than those. Still, Tenth was not reckless. And like most of the guests at this feast, he was hardly unarmed. The other guests were discussing the killing in soft, frightened whispers. Some of them were leaving, like himself. Probably to the worlds from which they had come. Tenth did not understand this. Why order everyone to remain in Silverlight, only to ask them to return to their tasks - some of which lay elsewhere? It made no sense. Kaikoa nibbled lightly on his ear. "Hush," Tenth said, pre-emptorily, although Kaikoa had not chirped. He made up his mind. He would go: back to his world, back to his safecamp (he could not shed the term so easily, even now), and then he would make his decisions there. Khriss had offered a hunt. Tenth did not intend to go back on his word. But he did not like this situation, either. It was a nest of deathants, and if he'd known... He left.

  4. Basically cat food But here are some tips: 1. When buying cat food, always check how many %of it is meat. The best known brands like Whiskas have terrible ingridients. 4% meat and the rest are grains and other non-meat ingredients. Good cat food starts from 50% meat. 2. You can feed him raw chicken or beef, just wash it and chop it, but make sure not to leave any bones. Especially in chicken. If they break and get swallowed they can puncture the intestine which would result in painful death or very costly surgery. 3. Dry cat food is OK, but don't make it his main source of food. Cats absorb most of water they need with the meat they should eat, so it's healthier for them to eat "wet" food. 4. If you decide to base his diet on raw meat, make sure to supplement him with vitamins and minerals. They are added to canned cat food, but are not present in chicken breasts etc. Some general tips: 1. If you want to keep him/her be warned that he might have fleas. They are usuall easy to get rid of when you have only one animal, but some find them gross and are terrified. 2. This cat lived on the streets so for 99% if has internal parasites. They too should be easily curable. You can do it in two ways. First one, more costly, is to gather some of its feces and have them tested in the lab to find out what there is to kill and then buy a medicine best suited for this kind of parasite. The second option is to just buy a medicine that has the widest range of effect. I personally usually go with the second option as a start, because it's cheaper and faster. Then only if I see any symptoms that parasites might still be there I go to the lab. 3. If you want to keep the cat in your house, provide it with at least 2 litter boxes, that will reduce the chances of him doing his business somewhere you don't want I could keep going and going with this, but I guess that's all for the start if you have any questions feel free to PM me

I admit, I'm the type of person who would probably get over specific with regulations and technicalities. But yeah, at least try being nice and apologetic and sorry while you're enforcing asinine rules. It... doesn't make much of a difference, but still. It's nice to be nice, I guess?

  9. Friends, gather around. I have uncovered the greatest secret of all time. Perhaps this has been revealed before and, if it has, bless the Sharder who first found it. If it has not been revealed before, or if this post can reach just one more person and help them understand the depth to which Brandon has prepared the Cosmere for our enjoyment, then I think this post is not in vain. I quote from Elantris, page 466 and 467 of the Kindle version: This is where "Raoden" fixed Elantris by adding the chasm line to the city. Or, rather, this is where THE STICK fixed Elantris! Compare this to the following passage from Words of Radiance page 143 and 144 of the Kindle edition: Is it not suspicious that one of the beads that "surged" up to Shallan would happen to be a... nay, THE stick? It is, to me, quite obvious that the stick Raoden used to add the chasm line to Elantris is the exact same stick Shallan communicated with after the santhid rescued her. Note how the stick Shallan is speaking to "sound satisfied"... perhaps this stick was feeling so satisfied because it knew that it had been, literally and figuratively, instrumental in saving Elantris from the Dakhor monks! Perhaps this particular stick is now deeply embroiled in the fight against Odium in the Roshar system and, therefore, simply could not turn to fire for Shallan because the stick still had so much work to do. Perhaps Brandon Sanderson has given us a massive clue as to the fate of the Cosmere and we have been distracted by some doofus named Hoid (or whatever) and missed this obvious clue given in the very first published work! Also, lest we forget, there was an entire chapter of missing information about the stick that Sanderson gave us - I will quote the relevant portions of the chapter below! I propose a re-read of every Cosmere work with a distinct emphasis on finding out what the stick has been up to! I would wager that we can find the stick in each published work, quietly providing assistance to the characters of the book and not at all upset that Hoid (or whomever) has been soaking up all the glory! Truly, the stick is the worldhopper we need to focus on if we plan on teasing out more details on the Cosmere. edit: weird strike-through error corrected

  10. Hi guys, I'm glad I found this place with all you fellow Sanderfans. It is awesome here. I hope you guys like weird theories, (sometimes) obscure music references, strange attempts at humor, odd questions, and totally random Cosmere/Reckoners/Alcatraz/Other Sanderson Novels stuff, because this is probably 99% of what i'm going to be posting! Enjoy!

  11. Same man. I was kind of hoping i wouldn't get returned, because I'm tired of being the center of discussion, and people are still suspicious of me. First off, i'm not voting for Lopen like i did last time. that vote was stupid, and i was angry at him for voting for me on day 1, and i overreacted. Even if people didn't see it, i was pissed by the day 1 vote. Which is also why i decided to not save myself. I could have by tieing the vote, as many of you have already said, but i'm getting better at recognizing unhealthy signs of anger, so i decided to let myself die and give my self time to cool down. About halfway through the night i realized i needed to not be returned, since as long as I'm still alive, Everyone is going to think that Elodin and I are on the same team. (In retrospect, i should have invested in someone like Sheep.) Oh yeah, Elodin doesn't have Cultivation. To the current wielder of Cultivation. My Meta-narrative backers would very much like you to get rid of it. Nothing else on that. Anyway, conversions. I'm going to use my returned power and kill myself at the end of night 3. That is a solemn oath. I will only not kill myself at the end of Night 3 if Over half of the surviving players tell me not to, or I have been converted. This is to prevent me being converted, because now if i don't kill myself at the end of night 3, I'm sure to be lynched by the village, and therefore a conversion is wasted. (#Kira-not-Kira). I wish I had more time to keep talking and responding, but I have to head out in about 5 minutes, so this is all you're going to get for the next 6 hours.

  12. Say what you will about Spokane, but it is beautiful this time of year. It's snowing gently as I type this, and it's already covered the roof and the yard and the nearby pine trees. Bruce bounds through it like a bunny rabbit—between bouts of chasing Mollie through the house, that is. I'm sitting on a bed in the guest room, with Bruno curled up next to me. The parents were happy to see me, so it seems like this will be a more pleasant visit. I'm super tired, but can't sleep, so I'm here typing instead.

When you and all of your sanderfriends got together about once a month to eat chouta, carry a homemade bridge around BYU campus, sing Sanderson-inspired song and recite the first KR oath, and talk Sanderson. When each of you has a cosmere - mostly bridge four - name (I was Nazh). The joys of living in Utah, that there are some 15 of us. Sadly, the two group leaders have now left for their LDS missions, and the group fell apart.

  20. I think we're mostly in agreement then, but if you will allow me to clarify the point on Haemalurgy. In order to steal anything with Haemalurgy you need 3 things: the correct intent, the correct bind point, and the correct metal. If you were to try and find a new combination therefore, you would need to test every bind point with every metal (though depending on how much you know of the system, you could narrow the metal down by the category of the attribute that you're trying to steal). We know that there's between 200 and 300 bind points in the human body, so if we assume 256 to keep to the base 2 nature of the metallic arts, that means that you'd need a maxiumum of 256*16 = 4096 guinea pigs. Whereas if you had atium, you would effectively eliminate one of the variables. You would still need to test for the correct metal afterwards, but it reduces the maximum to 256+16 = 272 guinea pigs, a far more manageable number. [This doesn't look anywhere near evil enough, why don't we have an evil grin option?]

  21. Point of resurrecting Joe for me it's activity in this game, he was one of the most active players on the first day. I'm just don't want this game to fall in inactivity same as LG28. Also there can be possibility that Joe was Odium and Elodin now his champion (I know there really small possibility but let’s just guess it). And I don't think that it's really big threat for us if he gonna be converted by Odium or Autonomy. And if he gonna be converted by Hoid it's even good for us cause 17th Shard have limited conversion (If I remember it right). That with what I absolutely agree.

  24. So I've been reading everyone's replies and all the feedback has been really appreciated, I'm gonna keep adding images to the main post as I work so stay tuned! I see there's been a lot of talk about spike counts. I think I'm going to go with a balance between canon and aesthetically pleasing. The default ten spikes seem a bit low for me so I'll probably add some. I will at least add one through the heart, and maybe more in the back even though none are mentioned (it looks more like a spine that way). I'm hesitant to add too many to the rib cage for fear of things getting crowded, but I'll withhold judgement until I test that. Thanks again everybody!

  25. @Elbereth Feel free to edit this in when you get back PSA on Shardic Abilities: A Shard has two unique actions they may take - they may invest (which may only be done during the Day Turn) and they may use a unique Shardic action (which may only be done during the Night Turn). If a Shard chooses not to invest in another player, they may essentially "self-invest" during the Day Turn (using one of their actions like normal). This lets them use their investment ability instead of their Shardic ability, as if they had been invested by the Shard they hold. Essentially, it costs 2 actions for a Shard's investment ability to be used (unless it is a passive investment) - if they invest in another, it takes one of their for the investment and one of their investee's to use the ability. If they invest in themselves, it takes 2 of their own actions (unless it is a passive ability).

  26. Shallan, hands down. There's a reason my wife and I decided to give our daughter the middle name "Shallan" <.< We call her baby monitor "Pattern." We're such dorks. (So far, she's living up to the name - her eyes are currently bright blue, she was smiling before 1 month, she was laughing at 2 months, she started signing at 4 months (only the word "diaper," but still), and now she's scooting (and very close to true crawling) at 6 months. We'll see what happens when she gets old enough for crayons! #proudmom)

  28. Ashen and Braize are on the Shadesmar map. This all comes from my ramblings on the Cosmere Maps thread but I'm consolidating it as a concise theory here. First: People seem to use the term Shadesmar and Cognative Realm interchangeably. So I just kept plugging along assuming that Shadesmar was the local term for the Cognative Realm on Roshar. Same thing, different places call the same things different names. Like some places it will be a water fountain, others a water cooler, others a bubbler, and others a scuttlebutt. No it is like Utah, United States of America. It is Shadesmar, Cognative Realm of the Cosmere. It is a zip code....An area code. My epiphany...which most of you knew already I assume...came because I realized that the Expanses looked like Mountain ranges growing bigger and taller in the sky. Almost reaching up to touch the Physical Realm at those 4 corners. @KidWayne map Clearly shows the Roshar System as the only known named system between the 4 Expances if we assume that we have associated them correctly. Now this is the KEY PART. Shadesmar is NOT a map of the Cognatve Realm, NOR is it a map of the planet of Roshar alone. It is a map of the entire Rosharan system. There are 2 more mountain ranges on the Shadesmar map. The Nexus of Transition and the Nexus of Imagination. Both are much closer to the 3 seas (3 dif credit to One Who Connects for languagues) 5 different language groups, and possibly different origin planets of the people of Roshar). 2 mountains not identified and 2 additional inhabited planet's in the Roshar system. The Rosharan system map shows both planets about the same distance from Roshar, but due to smaller orbits, Roshar and Ashyn should pass closer together more frequently than Roshar and Braise. Also sickness plays a key part on Ashyn. People Transition from healthy to sick and sick to healthy. I also can't think of anything more imaginary ie from the mind...than a planet full of cognitive shadow splinters. Therefore, my theory is that the Nexus of Transition is the Cognative pathway to Ashyn and the Nexus of Imagination...which just doesn't quite always touch any of the seas is the Cognative pathway to Braize. I have outlined where the 5 major language groupings occur on Roshar and transposed it to the Shadesmar map. The Vorin line up pretty well with the Sea of Lost lights and reach out towards the Nexus of Imagination. The Makabaki creep out of the Sea of Souls into the Sea of Regret. The Iri straddle the mountains of the Nexus of Transition. Dawnchant based languages survive in isolated and rigorous environments forming enclaves across the map. This could indicate that it originally was the only language and was pushed out by invaders or immigrants to the point that only the most rigorous places maintained the original language much as Spanish and English pushed out Native American languages. WOB on Reddit on language groups Questions and Flaws to be addressed: There are 3 Nexus (yes plural is same except bar on u, I looked it up) but this theory never addresses the Nexus of Truth. Recent ideas also speculate that the nexuses could be indicative of Sephardic influence affecting the CR. Why do the Iri straddle the Nexus of Transition, but not really any of the Seas? If Dawnchant was the original language, where did the other 3 people's come from? "Expanse of Storms" name is credited to @The One Who Connects

  29. Setting You’ve followed Dalinar and his army to the lost city of Urithiru. With Alethi and other peoples arriving more and more every day, the city is becoming a rather bustling place, which is perfect for an agent such as yourself. What better way to subtly manipulate the decisions--especially with the Desolation nigh at hand? Unfortunately for you, you’re not the only one trying to control what’s going on. You’ve learned that there is another group working against your cause, and there are even rumors of a third group, undermining the other two. The Sons of Honour and the Ghostbloods have never gotten along, and now is no different. However, as people start disappearing from the city, you fear you might have to work together to solve the problem. Some of the disappearances are people you’ve never met and you think they might work for the other side, but others are people you know. Maybe the rumors are true. Maybe someone is trying to remove the other players in this politically manipulative game. Can you find them before they kill you too? Teams There are three teams, spread between two factions. The members of each faction will not be publicly announced in the thread, but you will have an idea of who is on your team (more on that in a bit). Sons of Honour You’re a devout Vorin, and if you could go back to the times of old and bring the Hierocracy back, you would. In fact, you’re convinced that all you need to do is find the Voidbringers, because once they return, the Heralds will be back. And how can anyone deny Vorin dominance when their very gods are saving the people from the Desolation? Ghostbloods You’re a Ghostblood. Fascinated with the Desolations and the Parshendi, you’re not interested in causing another Desolation, and you certainly aren’t interested in another Hierocracy. You’d like nothing better than to stop the Everstorm and the Desolation from taking place, and you hope by being in Urithiru, you can have some effect in keeping it at bay. Diagrammists You believe in the Diagram written by King Taravangian. Devoted to bringing stability to Roshar, you’ve noticed that these two other groups, the Ghostbloods and the Sons of Honour, only seek to destabilize the political structures, making them easier to bend to their will. To stop them, you and a number of other Diagrammists have infiltrated the Ghostblood and Sons of Honour ranks, and you are intent to end their manipulations in Urithiru once and for all. You have one group kill per cycle, but you do not have access to a Google doc to collaborate, and must rely on PM communication. The Roles To further your faction’s cause, members of your factions have abilities that will help you perform your tasks. Roles will be evenly distributed between the factions, and then randomly distributed among faction members (including Diagrammists). Roles are not revealed upon death. Not all members will have a role. Those who have no role are Regulars. Knight Radiants Amazingly, some of you have shown surgebinding potential and are well on your way to becoming Knight Radiants. With causes such as the ones you’re fighting for, you don’t expect to have any Radiants from Orders like the Windrunners, who rely far too much on honour, or the Skybreakers, who are driven by justice, which is something you tend to bend if it suits your purposes. However, not all the Orders are stuffy, and some of them are even pretty useful to your faction. Both factions will have an equal number of Knight Radiants in their ranks. This distribution will be random. Note: there is only one Bondsmith in the game, regardless of how many Radiants are included. Bondsmith - You’re all about uniting people under a common cause, and you believe your faction’s goals are the only way to bring about true unity in these trying times. You have access to the surges of Tension and Adhesion, but you can only use one per cycle. Tension - Each cycle, you can create a PM between any two players (can self target). Send in your request to the GM, who will set it up for you at the end of the cycle (accounting for any redirection and/or other blocking abilities). This PM can continue for as long as both participants are alive. Adhesion - Uniting people is what you do. Nothing brings you more joy than bringing two people together--particularly if those two people used to be enemies. You can choose two people each cycle, and on the following cycle, those two people must ultimately vote identically. The GM will PM the lucky two to tell them of this new, unbreakable (at least for a day) friendship. Edgedancer - You don’t care much for your faction's grand plans, but you figure that if you’re not there, the little details will get overlooked. Plus, you like putting your abilities to good use. You have access to the surges of Friction and Progression, but you can only use one per cycle. Progression - With the power of Regrowth, you like saving things, whether it’s making a nearly dead plant grow or healing an injured person. You can protect any player from one kill attempt each cycle. However, you cannot save yourself. Friction - You’re so fast, you can sneak into someone’s private rooms, read all their messages, and get out before being seen. You can spy on all outgoing PM’s from one player per cycle. The recipient of the messages is not included. Lightweaver - A true artist, you’re less concerned about who wins and more concerned that such an historic time is documented. You’re still choosing to help out your faction, though, because what better way to make sure things stay interesting? You have access to the surges of Illumination and Transformation, but you can only use one per cycle. Illumination - Each cycle, you can redirect one random action from your target to a different target. Transformation - You can change a vote (including no vote) to another player. Elsecaller - Some people might wonder why an Elsecaller, one of the more benevolent orders, is caught up in such schemes, but kindness is all based on perception, right? You believe your faction’s cause is what’s best for everyone, and you’ll do all you can to help people based on that belief. You have access to the surges of Transformation and Transportation, but you can only use one per cycle. Transformation - You can target a dead player, changing their appearance (role) for the following two cycles. Transportation - This action prevents any action from other players that targets you, no matter the action, from affecting you for a whole cycle. Lynches will still kill you. Other Professions Surgeon - You studied medicine in Kharbranth itself, learning at the best hospitals in the world. Your skills are second to none (although there are a few who are equally as good as you are). You can protect any player from one kill attempt per cycle, but you cannot protect yourself. Runner - Trained by one of the fastest messengers alive, you take pride in your speed of delivery. You’re among the fastest in Urithiru, making you a hot commodity. Each cycle, you can create a PM with two players (can self target). Send in your request to the GM, who will set it up for you at the end of the cycle (accounting for any redirection and/or other blocking abilities). This PM can continue for as long as both participants are alive. Artifabrian - Although ardents are the only people allowed to use Soulcasting, it would, to say the very least, be rather naive to expect that rule to be strictly obeyed. As an artifabrian, you have engineered and experimented with a variety of fabrials in order to improve on your designs, some of which push the very boundaries of what is thought possible. Every cycle, you may pick a target. One random action that would affect the target comes to you instead. Ardent - As a member of the ardentia, you are a member of a key group in Alethi society. Being an ardent has its contradictions: while you are free from the customs and constraints governing each gender, your life is not your own; you are considered the property of a lighteyes, and are not permitted to own anything. More importantly, you have exclusive access to knowledge of Soulcasting and fabrials. Using this, you may change a vote (including no vote) to another player (or no one) each cycle. Cook - You learned your impressive culinary skills among the Horneaters, and you can cook a meal like these lowlanders haven’t ever tasted before. You know how to mask the most potent flavors in a dish, and occasionally, you’ve been known to use that skill for less-than-pleasant purposes. You’ve racked up quite the body count with some of your culinary surprises. Each cycle, you can attempt to kill any player. Veristitalian Scholar - For you, the past is never dead; it takes a clever mind to sift through the detritus to reconstruct history objectively--as things truly happened. Where historians seek to paint themselves in the most flattering light, you see yourself as a dispassionate seeker of the truth: for you know that in the past lies the answers to the future. Each cycle, you can research one of the dead to discover role. Explorer - You’ve been recruited by Dalinar to map out Urithiru. Spending your nights in the uninhabited regions of the lost city, you don’t see much other than your maps, and no one sees you either, until you surface in the morning. Every other cycle, you can prevent any and all actions targeting you, including lynches, from affecting you. Assassin - You’re a master assassin, and you have many skills at your disposal. You’re invisible when you want to be, you have a knack for learning the information you need to get into inaccessible places, and you see things others tend to miss. Unfortunately for you, your assassin services aren’t needed as much here in Urithiru, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use your other skills. You can watch a player any cycle, learning the identity of one random player who targeted them (regardless of whether the action succeeded or not) The Positions Every well-established group has a command structure. The Sons of Honour and Ghostbloods are no different. While not every member knows who all the others are, each one knows someone, and a few have even more knowledge. Every cycle, a person in command can make one PM with any member below them in the command chain. This person does not have to be directly below them, and these PMs can be created at any point in the cycle. Positions are assigned randomly, with no distinction between loyal members of the faction and the Diagrammists. Thaidakar (Ghostbloods) and Restares (Sons of Honour) - You are the leader of your group. You know the identity of every member and the position they hold within. Commander - You report directly to your leader. As such, you know his identity. You also know the identities of the people who report to you. This is only a fraction of the members in the group though, as there are multiple Commanders. Captain - Reporting to the Commander, you know his identity but haven’t a clue who the leader is. That’s okay, though. You have enough responsibility as it is. You know the identities of a fraction of the Regular members. Private - You’re just a regular member of the group, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get to have fun. You’re just as important as the others, except that you don’t quite know who’s on your side. You only know the identity of your Captain. Win Conditions Primary Win Condition Sons of Honour and Ghostbloods: Kill the Diagrammists Diagrammists: Kill everyone else. Secondary Win Condition Sons of Honour or Ghostbloods need to kill the other faction’s KRs. The faction with the most KR’s alive if/when all Diagrammists are dead wins. The other loses. If both factions have equal numbers of Radiants alive or all Radiants are dead, they tie and win together. Alternate Win Condition If an equal number of members from all three teams (Sons of Honour, Ghostbloods, Diagrammists) is alive at any point in the game and the Bondsmith is still alive, the remaining players win together, united in one cause by the Bondsmith. Order of Actions Transportation/Exploration Illumination/Artifabrian/Assassin Progression/Surgeon/Tension/Runner/Elsecaller Transformation/Scholar Lightweaver Transformation/Ardent/Friction/Adhesion Kills/Lynch GM Notes GMs: Wilson and STINK Impartial Moderator: Alvron Player Cap This game will have a player cap, to be chosen by the GMs after signups are closed, depending on the how many players sign up. That cap will be somewhere between 20-25 players. However, more players can sign up. We will use an RNG to decide who plays the game out of those who sign up, and those not chosen will go onto the Pinch Hitter list. Inactivity Filter This game will also have an inactivity filter. Any player who does not post, PM (if they can) and submit an action (if they can) in the first two cycles of the game will be replaced by someone on the Pinch Hitter list. After the first two cycles, any player who doesn’t post, PM, or submit an action for two cycles will be killed. Please note that this means you must do all three, if you are able, to be considered active in the first two cycles of the game. After the first two cycles, you only have to do one of the three to be considered active and not killed. If you must go inactive for a short time, please let the GMs and the thread know when you will be going inactive and when you will return. This period of inactivity cannot go beyond three cycles. If it goes beyond two, you will not be killed by the filter (though you could be killed by the lynch or another kill). If you do not return on the date/cycle specified, you will be killed. Rollover Rollovers will be at 12:30 PM MST/7:30 PM GMT. Signups will close at 11:30 AM MST/6:30 PM GMT on Monday, 2 January, so we don't have to worry about rollovers are New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. The game will start an hour later. PMs will go out during that hour. Player List Quick Links

I am in high school, but hey, the Shard is where age doesn't necessarily matter I've been to London, and can I just say, you have some really beautiful architecture.

  35. Welcome to the forums, and what a great question to start out with! The answer gets pretty deep into realmatics, so buckle up, 'cause this is gonna get messy. Metals themselves don't produce Investiture; they are keys to Investiture, which comes from a Shard. We do know that metals from another world are useable for Allomancy; if you're watching very carefully, you just might see it in Stormlight. Metal is an additional cost, like water is in White Sand or color is Warbreaker. The magic doesn't come from water (probably), it doesn't come from color. The magic is all drawn from the Shard behind that magic system. Allomancy is powered by Preservation. Elantrians are powered by the Dor, a mixture of two other Shards. To gain access to a magic system, you usually need to graft a piece of that Shard's Investiture onto your soul. (Initiation is the technical term for it; in Allomancy, that takes the form of Snapping). Whenever you use that magic system, you're drawing energy from a Shard. It turns out, actually, that the Dor is the exception in this case, that it's very difficult to power when you travel off-world. We learn why in the essay for the Selish system in Arcanum Unbounded. I'll put it in spoilers below, in case you haven't read it yet. So, if a Mistborn goes to Sel and burns a metal from Sel, they are consuming a piece of Selish matter to activate their Spiritual Connection to Preservation, letting them draw on Preservation's energy to power their Allomancy in a specific way. (Ultimately, this energy will return to Preservation; Shards will never run out of power from people using their magics.) It is also possible to power a magic system using pure Investiture, if you can find Investiture in a physical form. (It takes many forms across all three Realms.) Burning atium draws directly on Ruin's power, since it's a physical piece of Ruin's Investiture. Drawing on the mists pulls directly from Preservation, and lets you apply that energy to whatever Allomancy you want. Stormlight appears to be a similar phenomenon; it's the Shard's power embodied physically, and it gets stored in gemstones until a Surgebinder can use it. But it's a wild card; the Investiture can be used in any number of ways, as opposed to the Investiture gained when a Mistborn burns steel, which can only provide energy in one specific form (Pushing). It is theoretically possible to 'hack' a magic system to be powered by another Shard's power, especially when you have access to a physical form of Investiture. This has happened to an extent with a certain character on Roshar, who consumes Stormlight instead of Breath (but hasn't figured out how to Awaken with Stormlight). Sand Masters, from the graphic novel, might be able to recharge their sand by exposing it to Stormlight or Mists instead of sunlight on Taldain. (One theory is that the sunlight itself is Invested, and carrying energy from Taldain's Shard.) But that isn't the usual way of powering a magic system, which involves a direct path to the Shard in the Spiritual Realm. How you get that path in the first place varies by magic system. For Allomancy and Feruchemy, there's a genetic component (with an additional Snapping required for Allomancy). For Surgebinders, it looks like if you behave certain ways and say certain Oaths, you bond a spren (which is a piece of a Shard). Awakeners can be anyone; all you need is to collect enough pieces of the Shard Endowment (and we've seen a certain Stormlight character with perfect pitch, who probably has some Breaths). For the most part, you need to be from a specific world to meet those requirements to gain that magic. Hemalurgy is a big exception, and one that the author of the Ars Arcanum has commented on; anyone, anywhere, can use Hemalurgy to steal any magic. All you need to do is know how. So, I hope this answers some questions (and, honestly, I hope it raises a bunch more for you). Don't quite take everything I said as gospel truth; the big picture is confirmed (Shards can power their magic anywhere in the cosmere), but some of the specifics are debatable (like whether water for Sand Mastery is the exact same as color for Awakening, or the specific forms of Investiture that are required for Initiation). But hopefully this gives you a good springboard into the deep end of realmatics, to take the plunge and look with a close eye at passages in Brandon's books to puzzle out how all this fits together in the underlying theory.

  37. Brandon says, So having lots of Investiture in your soul can lead to bad consequences. But isn't Nalthis a counter-example to that idea? So let's disregard the God-King who has stuff going on we don't know about and the Returned, who have divine shardic influence. Any citizen who is rich enough, can get lots of Breath. I'm talking Bill Gates type of rich. Normal guy, Lots of extra breath. Like thousands. No consequences, right? From what we know, as Breath piles up, you just get more and more benefits. So I was thinking about possible consequences for Wax, and Seekers and Copperclouds, who were mentioned earlier and are extremley likely to become savants. So taking Spook as the premier (only?) example, he used so much Tin, that eventually, when he wasn't burning metal, he felt blind, and all the other senses were muted as well. But, he wasn't actually blind, he still saw normally, it just felt that way to him. So I'm going to use a lot of metaphors in this post. Anyway, instead of his eyes being able to adopt between "burning metal" and "no metal" and being able to process the info, the extra investiture permeating his soul made it so that only while he was using investiture he could process what he was seeing (and hearing). Which lead to over-enhanced senses. Anyway, my metaphor is that when a person is in a dark room, and light flashes, it takes time for the eyes to adopt back to darkness. Spook's eyes stopped adopting back to normal. Now, looking at Wax, we have storing weight, which he does a lot of. A consequence of that could be that when he is at his normal weight, he feels heavy. Maybe at normal weight he feels like a normal person would under heavy gravity. Maybe it makes him clumsier/more awkward if he's not storing weight. If he's pulling weight to make himself heavier, he's not awkward becuase the investiture compensates. This is all pure speculation. As a Coinshot, the only think I could come up with for Savantism is: you know the feeling when you hold your hands, plams facing each other, shoulder-width apart, pushing out, and another person is supporting your hands so they're not actually moving. Then when you try moving your hands together you get an odd, resistancy feeling. So for Wax, if he's not Pushing anything, maybe he has that type of feeling. Yes I know this is a weak idea, but it's fun to come up This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules stuff, even if it's wrong So next up, Seekers. Perhaps, the consequence for them is a feeling like a heavy silence pressing down on them or feeling like missing a sense, like being deaf. For Copperclouds, perhaps it would be feeling exposed, or over-exposed, something at phobia levels, or like a warm comforting blanket is missing. Then I was thinking metaphors for why too much investiture is bad. Using Brandon's own phrase, maybe it's like a deflated balloon on a smaller scale. Brandon decribed TLR as a deflated balloon after he used up the Shardpool. Maybe savants are deflated balloons on a smaller scale. If you burn metals but are not a savant, the balloon can return to normal shape, if you're a savant, it stretches too much, the balloon deforms, so consequences occur. I was imagining threads in a balloon, when a ballon deforms threads reach differently, or end up in different places. That's when you're not burning. While burining, the investiture running through you compesnates for anything that's happening. Or knitting, you have a knitted piece, alternating yarn is investiture, if it gets too thick, the whole thing deforms, stitches pulled too tight, loose areas etc. So Stormlight "rages" and metals are "burned" OTOH, Breath seems like a calmer thing. Breath -assiciation - meditation. My metaphor for people on Nalthis is that they have a two part soul. Instead of Investiture being interwoven into the fabric of the soul, there are two knitted pieces. One is Investiture-less, what you keep when you become a drab. Other is completely made up of investiture, can become large without affecting the other. So these are just a couple of my ideas I came up today. Also, examples of people holding large amounts of investiture: the God-King, TLR, and all Vessels. Well, the consequences for vessels skip the soul and go straight to burning the body, at least at first. But for God-King and TLR, we don't see any horrible consequences of the sort that were very obvious for Spook. Maybe too close association to a Shard for the God-King (Divine Breath) takes care of all the problems, and TLR held the same power as Harmony when he fixed Spook, so was able to pre-empivley make sure nothing would happen to him. I repeat, this entire post is pure speculation. Except for the question about wealthy Nalthians with lots of Breath and no consequences.

  38. The only thing I ask for Brandon Sanderson to do is for him to write more chapters in the Stick's perspective. I really think it's a very deep character and I would like to explore his story. If it's possible, I would like for the Stick to be a main PoV character in the back five books, I would really like to see its backstory and its motivations to be a stick. Definitely my favorite character, and I hope it can also be in a cover, I would love that. Anyone else agrees with me?

  39. Oh boy this is a fun one. They key here is that drawing Feruchemical power at a higher ratio than 1:1 is inefficient: As an example with arbitrary numbers, if you store 10kg of weight for an hour, then later you can either be 10kg heavier for an hour or 20kg heaver for 15 minutes. There's loss as you cram together the extra energy. So let's say Wayne has 10 units of healing left, and needs to heal a paper cut. He could either tap 1 unit to heal the cut over the course of ten seconds, or 10 units to heal it over the course of 2 seconds (more random numbers, since we don't know the actual proportions). In a fight you're going to want that paper cut healed immediately, but in a low-resource or low-stress situation you'll be more careful with your feruchemical storage. EDIT: More visual example that ties into "surging" as a thing: Let's say an injury is an empty water glass, and when it's full the injury is healed. Tapping at a 1:1 ratio is you carefully positioning the glass under the tap, turning the tap on, and carefully turning the tap off just as you fill the glass. Surging at a 10:1 ratio is like grabbing a giant bucket of water and turning it upside down over the glass: faster, but more wasteful. Links: Brandon on the matter. My favorite explanation for why this makes sense. Democracy deciding that this lossy energy-compression should be called "surging".

  40. Jasnah was, as Navani put it, "really born thirty years old", so being MORE mentally mature than your age is not unique among the heroes. The difference is that Lift is putting (semi-)conscious effort to be the opposite. And so the moment of contrast look sharper. You probably cannot simultaneously be a fool, a madman, an orphan, and alive, but you're allowed to try.

  41. Another question: Arclo claims that Nale could not kill him, and that the Skbybreaker apprentices stood very little chance. Yet, Aimia was "scoured" and the implication was that most of the inhabitants were slaughtered. I wonder if this is actually true or if the inhabitants simply broke themselves down into cremlings, waited for everyone to go away, and then quietly reformed into their body shapes. Also, given what we know of Aimans, why did humans want to slaughter them? I think there is something very important here. Looks like a targeted reread is in order.

  43. I’ve got mixed feelings about Edgedancer. On one hand it’s clearly been written for the fans, and as a fan I absolutely love it. On the other, more objective, hand it feels a bit lacking to me. This could of course be due to the natural tendency to compare it to the two Stormlight books that led into this one, and also to the Emperor’s Soul with which Edgedancer bookends Arcanum Unbounded. Since these stories are exceptional and sit amongst my favourites, feeling lacking in comparison isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The book, of course, features Lift as the main character which is a major plus. Does anyone anywhere dislike Lift? Even Nightblood likes her, which I think makes her officially un-unlikable. To me she’s not at the same level as Jasnah (who’s one of my favourite fictional characters overall), but seeing as how much I enjoy reading about her, I’m not too disappointed that this didn’t turn out to be Jasnah’s unpublished novella which I had initially hoped it to be. Regarding the secret societies of Roshar, we get a new one here: the Sleepless. This is on top of the Ghostbloods, the Sons of Honour, the Diagramists, the Skybreakers (whom it turns out actually are Skybreakers), the Envisagers, and the Seventeenth Shard! It sounds very much like this new lot are the people writing the blurbs for the Stormlight books; and are they all Dysian Aimians, or do they include the Siah as well? Either way, it seems that whenever a new character is introduced now, the question is not “does this person belong to a secret society?”, but rather “to which secret society does this person belong?” Okay, I may be exaggerating, but it is getting very crowded here nonetheless. It would indeed seem that the significant owl hoots in the night. Naln’s final scene in the novella feels too short to me. I’ll grant you that it’s perfectly in keeping with his character (what little we know of it), but given the significance of what happened, it felt like it was missing something. Also the way that, at the end of the story Lift ends up heading back to Azimir left it feeling more episodic: less like a complete work in its own right, but rather more like an interlude from one of the main books, albeit longer and on a much grander scale. Like we were being shown some cool new things about the world, and covering some plot points that would be needed for the next book, and on that level it succeeds completely. So overall I really liked it, it just wasn’t on quite the same level as the Emperor’s Soul.
