  1. Cognitive Dissonance GMs: Nyali and Elbereth Timing (Signups & Rollover) Signups will be open for a week, from now until Tuesday, September 13th, at 10pmEST. The game will start 26 hours after signups close (on Thursday, September 15th, at midnightEST) to give me time to adjust the game to the number of players (the game is designed for 25-31, but I can handle any number). At some point during those 24 hours, you will receive your Role PM, but PMs and Docs will not be created until the game begins. Since this game is very complex and it's the first game I'm running here, days and nights will both be 46 hours long with a 2 hour rollover. Rollover will be from 10pmEST to midnightEST (that's 7pmPST to 9pmPST and 2amGMT to 4amGMT). Overview (the game in summary) Every player has a character with their own goals. Some are Independent and have only their own goals, and some are in factions and have a common faction goal as well. Every player has their own unique powers, only some of which are "common" and listed here. Some powers are passive and some take actions. During the day, you vote to lynch. During the night, you get three actions. There are five worlds and you can only use most actions on people who are on the same world as you. The game ends when a faction goal is achieved, even if no one in that faction has all of their personal goals achieved. Rules Common Powers Sample Characters (these roles are either not in the actual game or have completely different character sheets) Write ups:

  2. Hello, I discovered here after I started Words of Radience. Since the series got me hooked, I have been looking for discussions, theories or basically just more of this world. I think Brandon did a great worldbuilding job here. The first book of Stormlight Archive was recommended to me by my friend after we both read Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle. Looks like I like strong protagonists. However, I must admit that Brandon's books have a more detailed and rooted universe. I am glad there are people out there like Pat and Brandon who spend their time to create new worlds for us to get lnto. I might read other Cosmere books but I don't like to start a whole different book when I just got used to these. Maybe later. So, what do you think? What were you reading before you met Sanderson Universe? How do you compare it to the others? What do you recommend for the void between the 2nd and 3rd books? I am always looking for a good fantasy / sci-fi novel.

  6. The Healer was alone in the woods when it happened. He had wanted to be alone. Fled. Run from the village, guilt chasing and reaching for him with its insidious fingers. Alex. An innocent. Alex had always been a quiet one, and he had accused Alex. Him. The Healer. Causing the death of an innocent villager. Healer. He spat. He had known he could never forgive himself. The fact that he had not meant to kill Alex did not come into it. He had been the first to call him out. And when others had started chiming in, he had made no move to withdraw his vote. He leaned against an old gnarled tree, vowing to himself that Alex’s death would not go unavenged. Who, then, were the Returned? Could it be Kelek? Kelek had been the other target of suspicion by the other villagers, and he had seen three men who had voted for Kelek fall to the ground, choked by Awakened clothing. Could Kelek be the other Returned? Yet the same thing had happened in the lynch of Friend Darb. Four men had been choked by Awakened clothing, and yet Darb had been an ordinary villager in the end. Could the Returned be hoping that the incident of Friend Darb would prevent the villagers from suspecting Kelek? Or was Kelek another victim of circumstance? And he could not discount the fact that for two nights now, there had been no Drab deaths. Two villagers had had their Breath stolen two nights in a row, yet there had been no Drab deaths the following night. He supposed that the lottery would have granted them Breath, but two nights in a row? Could there be yet another newly Returned such as Rox? He wondered whether he had it in him to accuse yet another. Another possible innocent. He had Alex’s blood on his hands. Could he cause another death? He cursed again. He was a Healer. A Healer. Yet. Something had to be done to prevent more deaths. He would give Kelek (Sheep) the benefit of the doubt, but if need be, he would lead the vote. He grabbed a low hanging branch, pulling himself up from his grassy seat. Having decided, he felt more at peace with himself, even though guilt still gnawed at him. It was time to head back into the village. Then he heard it. A scream from the direction of the village. He gritted his teeth. Another rabbit kill. Curse those Returned. Curse them. He slung his pack over his shoulder and made to run in the direction of the scream. A snuffling. Tiny footsteps. He stopped short, then sighed and relaxed, turning to look into the eyes of death. Two small red eyes stared up at him, shining with malevolence. The Healer reached into his pocket, bringing out a small spray of powder, then sighed and put it back. Why me? There was no overpowering a Lifeless, even one as small as a rabbit. He closed his eyes, and something whooshed past him. Snapping his eyes open, he saw a hulking figure holding the violently struggling rabbit by the scruff of its neck, oblivious to the scratches and bites the rabbit was trying to give. With an easy motion, the figure swung, and the rabbit’s form was silhouetted against the moon as it flew over the forest into nowhere. The figure turned, and the Healer saw who had saved him. A Lifeless. Someone had sent one to protect him. But who? Murmuring his thanks, he allowed himself to be led back to the village. EDIT: can my savior please PM me?

  7. Round Nine: The Sticky and Smelly Six Al Vron here to bring you all the latest play by play and boy do we have a doozy of a match today. Looks like the action is kicking off early so let’s jump straight to the action. The field is filled with big names who have big talents. One of the new faces is Rynth who’s managed to stay alive despite the odds. She’s become something of an icon and many here hope she can take the big prize. But there is some fierce competition out there. There is so much to keep track of. She might be a new face but she’s showing a lot of these fighters a new trick or two. Would you look at that. Several contestants have gathered around the body of Keisha and are bludgeoning and ripping it apart with whatever they can find. I wonder why they’re doing that? Leyton is a career Sennti jock. This is his second year and he’s been steadily climbing up the ranks. He’s already earned a place in the fans hearts but you got to think that he wants to go all the way to the top and claim the games for himself. He’s got a real shot at it and he brings some extra intensity with him to every fight. This has been a good match. There have some good fights and some nail biting going on. I love a match where you don’t know what’s going to happen next. There has been some games where it’s a forgone conclusion as to who the winners will be but I prefer these.. Watching new talent flourish is always a delight and there is no better place for it to flourish than right here in the Arena. And Rynth has been taken out. Not just killed but also set on fire. Not sure that was necessary but the combatants sure seem to think it was. There goes Leyton. Nicknamed the Gentleman Killer he was one tough fighter. He didn’t fair so well this round but the fans sure loved him. Rynth - I_am_a_Stick has been killed. She was from Scadrial. Leyton - Stink has been killed. He was from Roshar. Vote Tally: Ec3(5): Len, Stick, Lopen, El, Nyali Stick(2): Silverblade, Ec3 Round Nine has begun. You have 47.5 hours.

  8. I believe Oscar Wilde said something similar...let's see..."The more we study Art, the less we care for Nature. What Art really reveals is Nature's lack of design, her curious crudities, her extraordinary monotony, her absolutely unfinished cushion... Art is our spirited protest, our gallant attempt to teach Nature her proper place..." It's in there somewhere!

  9. I didn't follow any of the drama within this thread, but I stumbled on this post. Since I thought it was interesting, I wanted to respond. Are romantic relationships required within works of fiction? No. Are romantic relationships expected within works of fiction? Yes. Has male/female friendship been pushed into a dark corner, never allowed enough light to blossom? Yes. Why? Because our society valor success within romantic relationships before anything else. You may be successful within each and every spheres of your life, but if you mess up in the romance department, then you may think you have failed at everything. Of course, I am over-stating it and these aren't my personal thoughts, I am merely stating what I believe to be the prevalent thought. Hence, since success within romantic life is considered mightily important, it is hardly surprising most works of fiction involve romance in a form or another. Fiction also is about escapism: it works better if the viewers/readers can visualize themselves as the main protagonist, if they can insert themselves into the story. Hence, romance has become a favored theme, but it isn't the only one. Under-dogs and outcasts are just as prevalent because most people feel they are either under-dogs or outcast. As for romance, finding your One True Love in the most unexpected place, to discover love while being locked in with the person of interest, to suddenly have this person you shout at become a love interest are prevalent tropes because it they offer quick resolution. In other words, those tropes offer sudden powerful love without having the protagonists actually have to work for it. It just falls onto them magically, with no effort. Very few stories can waste pages to have the protagonists date, get to know each other unless they are... romance stories. Hence, romance often feels predictable, repetitive and downright unimaginative. Male lead stumbled upon female lead, so OF COURSE they become an item. If anyone tried at writing friendship in between the leads, then you can be sure the entire readership/viewership are going to ship them. Hard. Unless it is obvious they are never going to be an item, such as already being within other functional relationships, but this rarely happens. Rand and Egwene may sprout to mind, but I would hardly call them friends in the later books. So yeah, I'd say most people not only expect, but want romance within their favored work. This being said, I also think authors/scripters aren't trying to be imaginative and refreshing enough. They are thousand of ways to start and maintain a relationship, why always focus on the same one? It may be it takes a true mastermind to pull of a satisfying and convincing romance out of a fantasy story or a blockbuster movie, one which does not feel generic.

  12. "I'm taking photos," she answered brightly. "Awesome, totally amazing photos with my best friend." Lyla couldn't help herself; she giggled ecstatically. That was a bad idea; it probably made her seem childish, or like a dork, and that was the last thing she wanted. Sure, Shiny said that that kind of enthusiasm was okay, but, still. Shiny wasn't from the Dalles; she didn't get how backwards and repressed the vanilla town could be about that kind of things. For a few minutes, the air was filled with flashes, Scribbler's fireworks and the random-fire burn of camera memory being used up. It was, in all likelihood, very inappropriate for a hospital. "Wait, you mean why am I here, now, right?" Lyla took a few steps back from the girl, her focus -for once- not entirely on the epic as she scanned the room. "Can I say I'm here 'cause of destiny? It sounds a lot cooler to say it was destiny." Though cool wasn't a phrase she would use to describe the room itself. Urgh would have been closer to the truth. Seriously. Just because it was functional didn't mean it was to be so drab and boring. It was a shame that Shiny's sparkles didn't seem to last very long; they certainly brightened the place up. Much more importantly, the decor did not do her hoodie any favors. She resisted the urge to groan out loud. Whoever set up the ward had zero concept of photographical composition. Granted, Lyla didn't either, really. She was more 'self-taught'... but she still understood that lime green didn't go well with whatever colour that was. She grabbed the bottom of her hoodie and started pulling. "It's dumb," she said- or tried to say. The words were muffled by the hoodie being pulled up over her head. She threw it onto the bed, repeating, "It's dumb. I mean, I was just minding my own business, then those pandas showed up and, okay, I know Vanilla's were supposed to be inside or out of the way or something but come on. Panda. Freaking. Invasion. What kinda person would wanna miss that?! So, I was just hanging around, getting some photographs of the whole thing for my scrap book - and okay so, I normally dont tell people about my scrap book right away, but we feel super close, ya know?- anyway, I was getting some photos and it was so cool, and then afterwards one of the guards dragged me in here." She paused, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly. The hoodie added a little bit of mass to her; she looked even scrawnier, and younger, without it than she already did. "There might have been something about getting checked over for head trauma, or injuries or whatever," she added, "but don't buy it. This is like, detention. Unjust imprisonment! So, hey, can you squeeze a little closer here? I was thinkin', you know, seflies with my bestie, kinda thing!" She worked her way back to Scribbler, throwing one arm around the girl's shoulder, then reconsidering. That wasn't the kind of thing Shiny would do, was it? And, granted, everything Lyla knew about Scribbler was second- or third-hand at best, but she clearly liked Shiny too, didn't she, so she'd probably be cool with stuff Shiny would do, right? Right. So, while she held the camera as far away as her arms would allow -probably not far enough- she moved the other one to around Scribbler's back instead. " 'Kay, so, on three, say 'Calamity'." That was something people did when they were taking photographs, wasn't it? They said something to make them smile. Lyla didn't have much experience with that. People didn't tend to like ti when she asked for their pictures. Not that it really would help in this instance; the teenage was already grinning like a lunatic. "Okay, one.. two... three!"

  14. Hmm. Sort of a relationship question, but not really? Maybe more of a literary question, so... sorry if this is derailing the thread some: Do you guys feel romantic relationships are necessary for books to sell these days? I ask since... well, it's a topic I think about a lot. As a sad, single guy As a consumer of fiction, I kind of notice a trend where every book I read seem's to have some sort of a romantic plot... to the point where, when a character of the opposite sex is introduced to the main character, I immediatly start looking for any authorial cues that they will end up together, or forming a love triangle, or whatever. (I'm saying "opposite genders" because I haven't really read any books with Queer leads or romances. I assume the same issue is present in those, where a guy meets a guy just to facilitate the romance plot, or a one of the girl's in the books gets pushed as being JUST PERFECT for the female lead... but that's speculation on my part) SO... I'm wondering: is it just me? Am I just more aware of how much love in in books since I'm not in a relationship? Or is it genuinely a thing where every book these days must have a romance sub-plot, regardless of how it fits with the story or the characters involved.

  15. Could living plate help a Radiant hold their light in more efficiently? Probably. The Radiants we've seen with living plate had brightly glowing glyphs on their plate, implying that the Radiants definitely aren't holding stormlight in perfectly, but I don't believe Dalinar ever remarks on those Radiants exhaling glowing clouds of stormlight when they speak to him, which I would imagine would be pretty shockingly noteworthy for him since he had never seen a surgebinder (or the use of surges) before. That implies to me that the plate is altering how the stormlight leaves the Radiant, most likely by channeling the light that bleeds away from them through itself to, 1) fuel its operation, and 2) slow the rate at which the Radiant loses their absorbed Investiture; like damming a river to create a more permanent water reservoir (not a perfect metaphor, but not terrible either). The reason dead plate needs infused gem stones would then be: because all plate needs a constant stormlight radiation source to function. I propose that dead plate probably interferes with surgebinding because it is not properly connected to its user, ie: if Szeth grabbed something while wearing plate, he wouldn't be able to lash it because he couldn't touch it through the plate (though he could still probably lash himself to different directions...). If the plate belongs to the surgebinder, I would imagine that it could act as an extension of the owner's body. I further propose that living plate won't drain any additional stormlight away from its Radiant and will if anything allow them to hold light longer and more efficiently, however, it will most likely require them to be holding stormlight in to remain summoned (manifested?) in the physical realm.

  17. Actually I think it's quite impossible the idea "trellium"=Atium-X Alloy (where X may be every metal of the 16) First of all there is the simple and quite absolute sentence "Harmony doesn't know what is it" (not the right wording) who removes quite every doubt about his exotic source. Then the Kandra themself didn't find any mundane metal in their research on the trellium, neither they mention it was an alloy. Another relevant point is that I don't think an Atium-X alloy may have the same stealing propriety of the pure Atium. In the books we see the "trellium" spike be able to steal Feruchemical steel, Allomantic steel and an unknown mundane attributes (maybe an animal's one)... I don't rememeber if Mr Suit's Spike was made of Trellium (but I think it's probably). I may (in theory) accept that every God-Metal Spike may steal everything with a different side effect (as in the case of Trellium may be the anti-detectin...or it's simply because the Spike is fueled by someone else) but not in the same power set (for example watch the Lerasium and Lerasium alloys in Allomancy). PS: I don't see the reason for the Kandra to not made test on the Spikes...They have a lot of them from the Chimeras, and a single Spike may be used quite an infinite amount of time to study its composition.

  19. The day has finally come. The day that many have been waiting for, for far longer than is fair (Thanks, Scholastic! Clearly the best time to drop a series is at the cliffhanger before the last book! Clearly, they’ve been taken over by Librarians, in order to keep this story under wraps). Alcatraz 5 is upon us, and Brandon’s been promising that we’ll finally see the long foretold altar scene. This is going to be a review of both the Starscape re-releases of the first four Alcatraz books, as well as a review of the fifth book in the series, though it will fail spectacularly on the latter point. The Books The new editions are nice. The covers are all much more cohesive, and not nearly as random as the Scholastic editions. It’s a little disappointing to lose the jacket art on the cover, but I think what we got instead is a reasonable trade, aside from the inconsistent embossing on book two, as seen here: But what really shines in these new editions are Hayley Lazo’s wonderful illustrations. From small glimpses into what’s happening in the stories to Bastille illustrating Alcatraz’s wild exaggerations and then snarking about them, they’re a delightful addition to an already wonderful story. I’ve read the first four books several times over the years, and these illustrations made me excited to read them again. And if you think I’m exaggerating, here are Isaac’s and Brandon’s thoughts on the upgrade. If you’ve been holding out on reading these, now’s a great time. Sure, they may be “kids books”, and you may be here for “adult fantasy”. These are a fun, light read. Yes, they’re on the more whimsical side, but they’re a wonderful side project, and I consider them to be the best Kids/YA series that Brandon has ever written. The Dark Talent Still with me? Read the first four books? (If not, shame on you. Go out, buy yourself the rest of the series [two copies of The Scrivener’s Bones and an Austen novel, as you’ll need them for the arts and crafts section of the program], and come back and finish reading this review once you’ve gotten that far, or else Alcatraz will make fun of you.) Alcatraz outshines both The Rithmatist and The Reckoners series in the last book of his autobiography. Waiting for nearly six years for this book was too long by far (thanks, Librarians!), but this book was worth the wait. The pacing is on point, and the action is bigger and better than ever. In this book, we finally get answers to questions that were posed earlier in the series (and maybe a few that haven’t), such as: Is the Breaking talent really the dark talent? How can Alcatraz wear a green jacket if he’s a fish? How do I reset my router if I’m stealing Wi-Fi from my neighbors? Who Killed Asmodeon? Is The Reckoners series tied to the Cosmere? If Alcatraz were to try really hard, could he break his way onto Scadrial? If Alcatraz is an unreliable narrator, can we trust him to be telling the truth about being on Earth, and not a cosmere planet? HOW DID ALCATRAZ END UP ON THAT ALTAR OF ENCYCLOPEDIAS?!? YOU’VE BEEN TEASING US FOR YEARS, AND IT’S NOT VERY NICE! Alcatraz warned you about that last one. By his own word, Alcatraz is: Not a good person A Liar Awesome An Idiot A Coward A Fish I, in general, wouldn’t trust a word that’s come out of his mouth since the beginning of the series. Maybe you’re more trusting than I am, though. Maybe you’ll finally get to see the altar scene, and maybe you’ll finally realize that this is an incredibly unlikely series of events to happen to a fish. Yes, this is a terrible review. I did warn you, after all. I wish I could tell you that it’s everything you’ve ever imagined, and that they all live happily ever after. But I wouldn’t want to spoil any of the fun. If you’ve read this far into the series (and amazingly, stomached this much of this crapaflapnasty review), go out and pick this one up. You’ll be surprised that Brandon can still shock you, even in a children’s book.

  20. I've been mainly putting this in the Random Stuff thread but heck, I'll be posting it here now to keep it all in one place. For those of you who don't know, I now volunteer at a bird of prey rehab/sanctuary. If you have any questions for me please don't hesitate to ask. I help out mostly in rehab, the area where wild birds are brought in to be treated. I am training in education, which consists of our birds who can never be released into the wild. We sit with them, hold them, and train them to fly and return to our gloves. So... the best part, our education birds! These are only a few of our ed birds. This is Zeus, one of our two red tailed hawks. He is our biggest bird. He was electrocuted and has a wing issue, which is why he's with us permanently. He's a sweet bird, even if he does tend to puncture the strongest gloves with those sharp talons of his. This is Rusty, one of our three Eastern screech owls. He's a brown morph form. This is Orion, our other red tail. He's a goofy bird; he has a swing perch in his mew and he loves to swing on it. This is Xena, our peregrine. She's an old bird, but still very beautiful. She's a moody bird, though. She's sassy. she needs a napkin. And finally, our cutest education birds, in my opinion, our american kestrels! The males have the gray, the females do not. My first time holding a bird was actually with one of our kestrels, a male everyone calls Baby (the public gets to name our birds). I got to hold and feed him under the supervision of the education director. He ended up getting away once; I got too comfortable and let go of his jesses. I wasn't about to let that happen again, so I clenched my fist really badly and ended up cramping my hand like no tomorrow. But it was fun; he seemed to enjoy it because he puffed up really big and rested on one foot, which is a sign of comfort in kestrels. I've seen so much awesome stuff so far, and I have learned a lot about these great birds. I wish to be a falconer some day so this is a great opportunity for me to learn about the back end of bird care.

  21. I would like to politely introduce myself. To begin I have read the first 6 Mistborn Novels, in the middle of the first stormlight archive book, and I have read steelheart. I love brandon sandersons work, and he is able to include his readers in his works, allowing room for deep thought on issues and ethical problems. I am very glad to partake of this group of fantastic fans. I also love Orson Scott Card, and would even go so far to say that both authors are similar. They each have the intriguing questions, and problems, and engage in theories that definitely involve their fans. I spend most nights reading late, and I participate in debate.

  27. Uh, 79? More like 200. These are just the common abilities - everyone has their own unique Specials. That's the crazy part. Oh, and then there's the items. There are 55 common items, 11 per world, and many players have their own unique items. So yeah, it'll be crazy xD The next time I run something like this, it'll be vastly simplified. It's too late to simplify this one, but next time (for the Rosharan Secret Society game), everyone will have ONE passive and ONE active unique special, not ~2-5 of each. I'm really curious to see how well this works though!

Anyways, here's a crazy idea: Going with the idea that Shardplate is made of minor spren (windspren for honorspren, for example), maybe the reason that dead Plate interferes with Surgebinding is because there's a bunch of pooled Investiture in the Plate. I'm imagining that live Plate is like the Stormlight analogue to conductors: where it's a lattice of minor spren, with Investiture freely flowing. The Nahel spren acts as a control switch, turning the minor spren from spren to Plate, and vice versa. There's Stormlight flowing in a feedback loop, which allows the Surgebinder to not waste a significant amount of Stormlight while they keep Plate up. Now, with the Nahel spren dead, the Plate is "locked" in, and the Stormlight that was supposed to be in the feedback loop is now stuck in the Plate, and can only be replenished through external supplies like gemstones. Thoughts?

  45. Hey there Sanderfans, we are officially less than a week a way from the release of The Dark Talent! Brandon will be doing two signings for it, a release party on September 6th in Salt Lake City, UT and a signing on September 10th in Springville, UT (check Brandon's Upcoming Events page for more information). Brandon is also currently at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA with quite a few signing events and panels. Not to mention The Missing Volume booth has early copies of The Dark Talent for sale! Check out Brandon's schedule here. In Arcanum Unbounded news, Gollancz has released the cover art for the UK edition of the anthology over on their blog. As with all the UK covers it was done by Sam Green. For those who are more of a fan of the US cover art Goodreads is currently holding a giveaway for the Tor books edition of Arcanum Unbounded that is running until September 30th, unfortunately this is only for the US and Canada though and does require a Goodreads account. Check the giveaway out here. Also in Goodreads news Brandon has announced that he intends to use his Goodreads account more, and that to start he will be posting reviews. He has posted his new Goodreads policy here, where he talks a little about how his reviews will work, such as pointing out aspects of the book that writing students should pay attention to. He's also posted his first review in this format, which is for Ghost Talkers, Mary Robinette Kowal's newest book. And last but certainly not least--seriously I, at least in my opinion, saved the best for last--we have an exciting new piece of artwork depicting Vin. Steve Argyle, an artist who has worked on Magic: The Gathering (AKA Brandon's favorite game), has truly done a phenomenal job of capturing Vin. He has a great post here showing it off as well as talking about the process that went into it and his relationship with Brandon. I for one think it is pretty amazing that, despite being primarily a digital artist, Steve took the time and effort to do this as an oil painting. It is currently for sale as 12x18in and 20x30in prints and as a 14x21in playmat.

  46. Many of you reading this already know about my current WIP—scientist during WWII creates three strains of a virus that grants superpowers, releases it to the world, and history changes. However, as I continue to research in preparation for writing, the story has begun to take shape—and I worry that I'm on the right track, that the story I'm currently working toward will wind up being unintentionally naive or offensive. So, I'll tell you guys what I have so far, and any input would be appreciated. -Three strains of the same superpowers-granting virus are released in early 1942. Although intended to be a tool for the US military and (perhaps) a select few allies, the scientist in charge of the project takes matters into her own hands and ensures it spreads to the general population of the US and Europe. -Initially, the proliferation of superpowers sparks a crime wave in many cities. Most of these are petty crimes or crimes motivated by money—pickpocketing, robbery, mugging, etc.—though as the story begins, many less scrupulous Supers are turning to organized crime. -In Spokane, the police department has begun recruiting women as Non-Combat Officers, or NCOs. Only women with mental powers—precognition, retrocognition, and omnilinguism—are recruited for these positions, as top brass doesn't want to put too many women in too much direct danger. When the situation in the city worsens, many of these women will take the opportunity to become full officers. -Here is where things get a little dicy, pending further research. I have it in my head that as the situation in Spokane grows more dire, the police department will begin hiring black Supers as well. The way I was planning for this to happen was to have them begin as auxiliary officers—though again, I'll need to research auxiliary police in Spokane more thoroughly. They display their skill with their powers, some call for hiring them for real, some object, and as Super mob bosses tighten their grip on the city, the department will allow them to be hired. Much of this was inspired by the research I've already done into Spokane during this time period. Sometime prior to 1940, they had a black police officer, a black firefighter, and a female detective—not super impressive, but it made me think, what if this were taken further? What if the little slivers of progressivism in Spokane at that time had become a little bigger? I thought that necessity might spur this along. There would certainly be resistance. Spokane was, and still is, a more conservative city, and there would be many residents who objected to blacks and women becoming police officers. Spokane's schools were never segregated (most likely due to the fact that the city's black population was quite small, making segregated schools more trouble than they were worth), but by the end of WWII there had never been a black schoolteacher, a black dentist, or a black lawyer in the city. When a black resident sued the city for being forced to the back of a streetcar at the turn of the century, the jury ruled in his favor and he was paid for damages, with the jury saying that people should be allowed to sit where they pleased in public places—yet a black man and his family were turned away from one of the city's premier restaurants and the court ruled in the restaurant's favor, with many members of the jury treating the case as a joke. Restrictive covenants and redlining kept black residents from buying homes in many neighborhoods, and yet local universities accepted and graduated black students. A chapter of the KKK opened in 1920, yet the city council issued them a strongly worded statement, essentially saying "We can't order you to leave, but if you use any of the violent methods your Southern counterparts use, there will be no mercy." So, there would be letters to the editor. There would be political cartoons. There would be threats, public and private. There would be property damage. I'd wager that the Klan would say "Screw it" to the city council and become more militant, after approved methods failed to bring them the results they wanted. These changes wouldn't happen without mighty resistance, but I think they would have the net result of forcing many residents to take a stand on one side or the other. Now, I'm worried about many aspects of this, in no small part because you guys know that worrying is a hobby of mine, but the big one is this: Am I making it too easy? I don't want to give the impression that, oh yeah, all America needed was a few million people to gain superpowers, and everything would've been peachy! The Civil Rights Movement was such a major part of history in part because it was difficult. So I don't want to give the impression that change would come easily, because 1) it wouldn't and 2) I feel that's disrespectful to the people who fought so hard for those changes. What do you guys think?

  48. If you want something close to Sanderson, I'll let you know that my brother claims that Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles is close enough. I need to get some time to read and confirm. If you enjoy Brandon's ability to tie things up and make sense, you are probably enjoying the logic. I would advise you to read some of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I really enjoyed Holmes' use of logic. There are lots of short stories and a few novels. Once a book called Three Bags Full caught my eye and I really enjoyed reading it. It was a translated book about sentient sheep trying to solve a murder in a small village. The subtle ways that the author showed the sheep' POV and their misunderstanding of things was well done and very humorous. I mentioned this book because I want you to know that you should keep your eyes open because you don't know what you will find.

  50. A-Pewter, F-Steel. All day. Something too OP would be boring to either be personally, or role play, but just the idea of storing the speed that Pewter gave you, to fill a metalmind with no downsides, and then the grace and coordination you get while tapping your metalmind and burning Pewter. Also, alternating filling and tapping mid-swing to ruin blocks/parries. And, of course, A-Pewter and F-Iron. Imagine weightless jumps and mountains of weight for landing, grappling in general, weightless acrobatics. Could you drop your weight to 1/3, then Pewterdrag and run, then suffer less exhaustion because you did so much less work?
