  1. Day 5: Ruined Plans On one night in particular, the assassinations amongst the different factions became so severe that it seemed as if the sky were raining coins. Though, as we would later find out, this was perhaps advantageous to us. The ash fell furiously in the night, and Ranel wasn’t happy about it. He should’ve been off, fighting in the grand siege. But no, he was a Soother, so he had to stay at the rear of the advancing force of men and koloss, attempting to Soothe away their fear and pain. There was no art in what he did. No pride. Once, he would have been ashamed to have resolved himself to take up this position, as a mere morale-booster of his troops. He could be so much more, and Allomancy had little to do with it. He had always been taught that Allomancy did not make a man, no matter its brute power. Allomancy was weak in comparison to the might of the human mind. But it seemed that nobody cared for sharp minds anymore. Several soldiers to the left of his position suddenly fell to the ground, struck by a volley of arrows. Rolling his eyes, Ranel focused his Soothing on those soldiers, taking away their feelings of pain, of terror. The men still reeled from the attack, but soon stood up, defiance in their eyes. “Fall back!” a man on the right flank shouted as a horde of koloss coming from the direction of Luthadel charged in towards the main attacking force. Ranel extended his Soothing towards those koloss, doing little to stop them, but causing a few of them to slow down or briefly glance around, confused. As the arrows continued to rain down, one particularly large arrow sailed through the air at an incredibly steep angle, aimed directly at Ranel’s heart. Ranel could only hear a faint whistling noise as a metal-tipped arrow penetrated the ash and mist and struck Ranel in the heart. - - - - - Ri had no Allomantic powers to call her own, and was perfectly fine with that. In fact, it gave her quite the edge as an informant. She could intercept information or supplies without any Seekers having so much as the slightest clue that anything was happening. She supposed that perhaps being a Tineye could help from time to time, but she felt more satisfaction in doing things herself, without the assistance of any mystical, ancient abilities. This evening, she would be meeting with several of the nobles around Luthadel, hoping to spread some false hope about the ongoing siege, and perhaps get a few more supporters of her faction on the inside. And, of course, pick up a few tidbits of information and some boxings along the way. Ri stood outside the grand Keep Erikeller, waiting for one of the high-ranking noble ladies of House Erikeller to arrive. Well, technically, she wasn’t a member of House Erikeller, but that was a technicality that even most of her fellow House members weren’t aware of. A short noblewoman approached the Keep, and Ri stepped out to greet her. “Ah, Lady Fedra Erikeller! How go things on this fine night?” “Lady Rivalia!” Fedra said, invoking one of Ri’s many aliases. “I love your gown! How do you manage to keep it so pristine on such an ashen night?” “Our house has some of the finest silks imported from the Northern Dominance,” Ri said, lifting the hem of her dress. “We’ve managed to develop several promising cloths that are able to more easily repel the ash.” “Is that so? Well, I must say that I am most impressed. Do remind me to--” A coin struck the back of Lady Fedra’s neck, and she crumpled to the ground. Someone cursed from beyond, and extended their hand out, sending a second coin straight into Ri’s chest. - - - - - The time has come, young apprentice, Ruin voiced in the Inquisitor’s ear. Your final target is almost within sight. The Inquisitor sniffed. “And then I will die?” Unfortunately, Ruin said in his ear. It is a shame, but you will have been a… worthy sacrifice. You must realize that all must eventually wither and die for me to have my way, of course. “Of… course.” Well, you have served me well. You have already provided me four more unwilling recruits, with a fifth on their way. Soon, destruction shall reign, and Ruin shall have its way. They will stand no chance. “As you say.” Shush, Ruin said, though his voice did not sound aggravated. Talk less. Your target is close. I can feel them. The Inquisitor grunted, and a coin struck him, glancing along the side of his face. The Inquisitor roared, a line of red appearing on his cheek. “Dominic?” the attacker questioned. “So it is you who’s been causing all this trouble. Just as I suspected.” Kill them! Ruin shouted, and Dominic obliged, throwing out a handful of coins and Pushing on them with all of his strength at the hooded attacker. The attacker responded by Pushing a coin of their own against the wall of a nearby hovel, altering their trajectory and soaring past the Inquisitor’s coins. The Inquisitor Pushed on the coin that the figure just used, causing the figure to accidentally Push themselves towards the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor immediately Pushed a fistful of coins into the ground, slamming into the attacker in midair, and punching them across the face. The attacker fell towards the ground, but not before taking a coin in each hand, and Pushing on each with as much Allomantic strength they had. One coin struck the ground, slowing their descent, while the other soared upwards, directly into the Inquisitor’s stomach. The Inquisitor’s eyes widened as he tumbled out of the air and crashed through the roof of a building below. Dominic shivered in the demolished room, blood running down his face. “I… I’ve failed you, Ruin.” You don’t say, Ruin said. “I had… the honor to be your obedient servant.” Shut up, you failed me. You’re nothing to me now. You've Ruined this plan. - - - - - Ranel (The Young Bard) was coinshot! He was an unspiked Soother. Ri (Arraenae) was coinshot! She was an unspiked non-Allomancer. Dominic (dowanx) was coinshot! He was the Inquisitor, with a Steel Spike remaining! Day 5 begins now and will end in 46 hours and 48 minutes. Good luck!

  4. I think the surest way for problems to arise is for a new skybreaker radiant to show up just as Sadeas's murder is revealed. Dalinar is trying to re-found the knights radiant, so it would not do to get into conflict with a new order showing up, but at the same time if anyone could figure out it is Adolin who is guilty of murder, it would be a skybreaker, and it would be a skybreaker who would seek to carry out the sentence no matter what. So it would either mean potentially fracturing the already fragile re-unification of the radiants, or let his son be locked up/executed by the very knights he is trying to bring back.

  6. Hi, I'm relatively new to the cosmere fandom; I didn't even know it was a thing until a few days ago, but I've read a few of them and I'm reading more. Very intrigued at the connection between the books. The upside? I have an excuse to buy more books. The downside? I have and excuse to by more books. Actually, no downside. Just an upside.

  7. Super cheesy and so sweet your eyeballs grew tastebuds. Then those tastebuds shriveled and died at the sugar overload. I started this over four months ago and repainted it twice. Now it looks a lot better compared to my first attempt on getting it down on paper. Original sketch: Ugh I really love drawing unashamed fanservice pictures that make the Cosmere fanclub look like the inside of a sport team's locker room. And another pure fanservice picture: Alethkar School of Witchcraft and Wizardry And one last piece of silliness and Adolin because for some reason I really like both. 9. I'll add that in rereading the particular moment people have quoted about Kaladin seeing Shallan as the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen: Brandon chose to word it as "It was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen." It, as in the smile, or I think the act of smiling through the pain, rather than Shallan herself. It's the moment when he stops seeing her as a frivolous lighteyes, sure. I don't think it's a moment of discovering a romantic attraction, however. jW

  10. I am glad people want to know about how stuff works! I post process pics so you guys in this thread can see that cool arts start from very humble origins. I don't feel like I'm qualified enough that my answers are the ultimate answers, but I can answer a question or two to the best of my ability. I found an old example that shows the difference between airbrushing and textured painting. I think it illustrates the techniques much better than the hamfisted 2 minute job I posted earlier. The first one is a sketchy, textured painting done with chalk brushes. This kind of look has hard lines and exaggerates shadows, and gives a more stylised, storybook illustration type of effect. The second picture is the first one redrawn from eye (not traced, so it's not exactly the same) with a combination of airbrush and hard round brushes. The cheeks and chin are smoothed with airbrushes, and the nose and lips detailed with hard brushes. This gives a soft and smooth appearance which is good for portraits and photorealistic copying. Brushes are tools, and tools aren't bad. You need to keep working at it, so you can get better at using your tools to their full potential. An example is this one that I drew around 7-8 years ago. I used the airbrush to shade the arms and they look like tubes. I used the dodge and burn tools to shade and highlight. That's another tip digital painting - don't do that! It looks bad on skin, it looks bad on cloth. You think you have discovered the new pro-tip shortcut (that doctors don't want you to know about) but it's not a shortcut because it makes your paintings looks weirdly flat. The hard way works the best way, sadly. And now you know how long I've been level grinding to get to this point. And I still think I can improve. That Szeth one is awesome! I feel so sorry for poor King Hanavanahananahanahaha (gosh I can't even remember how his name is spelt.) It's so dramatic! Everything Szeth does is so dramatic and literal overkill and you showed it really well. As a note for the Shardplate, officially there are no gaps, and in between the big plates are small layered ones like scales. The way your drew it looks like there's bare skin showing underneath (I don't know if you intended it for it to be pants). So now I'm a bit concerned for poor Adolin's inner thigh area, the bits that aren't covered by the codpiece. Everyone draws Adolin's hair a different way. The description in WoK says it's a "messy mop of blond sprinkled with black" and it's vague enough that all artists take their interpretation of it, and I love to see how people do it differently. It's one of the things I enjoy about the Cosmere fandom, next to everyone's designs for the Bridge Four and Kholin Army uniforms. Michael Whelan drew it on the cover of WoR like a strange fusion of a utility jumpsuit and a Middle Ages doublet. Mine is closer to a Napoleonic era army uniform. @maxal and I had a long conversation a while ago about Adolin's hair , for artistic research only, of course. That is why I came up with this handy chart so you can see what best fits your personal mental image of his character and appearance. THE OFFICIAL ADOLIN KHOLIN HAIRCUT CHART The reason why I draw Adolin with the first style is because it's standard young man hair. The "Bieber" makes him look too young, like a boy. The "Dalinar" is the soldier's haircut to fit under a standard helmet and Adolin hated the standard uniform in WoK. So something that is in-between fits him when he is referred to as "lad" or "youth" through all of WoK. It's the same hair as Gilbert's from the Anne of Green Gables animated series. Well, I'm not even going to ask what sort of strange things poppped into your mind. I think my own imagination on that is more than enough. And a whitespine named Toothless is so deliciously ironic and so cute that even hipsters who don't do irony even ironically would like it, because everyone likes the How to Train Your Dragon movie. Everyone values their purity differently, and it's down to culture and then personal preferences. But generally speaking, for cultures where it is valued, it is more important for the woman to be pure than a man. Since there's no way to tell for men, so it comes down to the honour system. Alethi might value purity on wedding day for both bride and groom, but I don't think they expect it, not for a high ranking lighteyes that can get away with lots of things through connections. So Adolin must be an odd one out in his society for his purity, even though everyone is supposed to be proper and reserved in public. Dalinar and Navani are proper in public and he resents her trying to get close to him in WoK because it looks bad. Makes you wonder what Elhokar is up to . His wife lives in the capital and even if he doesn't miss her, he must be restless. Harry was marked as the "Chosen One" from birth and Voldemort kept following around for years trying to kill him. Kaladin chose himself by deciding that he had to be the one to stand up and protect everyone. Some readers praise his willpower and determination but to me it feels like he has a martyr complex. And his belief that he is responsible for everything and blaming himself if something goes wrong is ... tiresome . I don't think Harry got that annoying, even if he was as blind and unobservant as a flobberworm. Oh man, have we derailed this into a "let's complain about Kaladin" thread? I think most people who don't particularly feel an emotional bias towards Kaladin have criticised him for how fast he picks up Lashing skills. And I totally agree, it's way too fast - but I accept it because it's part of narrative convencience, like a training montage in a kungfu movie where they play "Eye of the Tiger" and have the student break planks with his face in slow motion. It doesn't make sense realistically, but if you get hung about it, you can't move on to the next chapter and enjoy the story. Adolin couldn't land a blow on Szeth twice, but in the prologue of WoK, Gavilar hit Szeth a couple of times, but Szeth healed each time. It has been commented in that duel with Resi (I think?) that Adolin is the best, better than Dalinar in his youth. Adolin in top form without panic-mode would therefore be able to land a hit on Szeth, even though he wouldn't be able to kill him. But of course he couldn't, because Kaladin needs people to protect. So the big question (which probably won't be answered because he's dead) is where Sadeas got his Plate from. If he won it from someone, then why couldn't repeat his performance? Unless people refuse Shard duels with anyone who has won one in the past, because they don't want to lose. I think Gavilar getting Plate for Sadeas of all people is a bit of a stretch. Uncle Toh and Shshshsh wouldn't give their family heirloom to a stranger. Shards are family heirlooms that go to family. You can't just loan Shards and expect them to be given back once your son is old enough to hit the practice grounds. And I would say Elit is around late 20's. He hangs with the group of young lighteyes, including girls that Adolin dated. It would be kind of weird for a 30+ year old man to be socially involved with young 20-something unmarried girls. Is there a difference between having a house under a highprince's banner and being a landlord? I don't understand the distinctions between the dahns and the requirements for each rank. Jakamav is a landlord at Dahn 3 which is the same rank as Renarin. Does Renarin have land under his own name? Or does his rank just come from having a highprince as a father? I don't get it, and it's confusing. When Feather sees the Renarin picture she will die. In other news, I cleaned up, repainted and coloured a picture that has been sitting around in my art folder for a while after I abandoned it. I posted it on Page 1 of this thread and wasn't happy with it so it got revised. It's now slightly better, but I think my monitor settings are off because it's more yellow than I intended. Oh well. Disgusting Shadolin Cuteness (pls close your eyes if you ship Shalladin or Shallastick) Original pencil sketch All of my sketches are messy as Braize. I draw with red coloured pencil then go over with graphite pencil, and when I scan it in the red pencil lines can be removed with some easy digital editing. I also adjust things slightly, moving and rotating lines around so things come out proportionate and symmetrical. The final piece looks a whole lot different from the original but the skeleton is the same. How big is a Shardbearer exactly? On Page 1, in the "Shardplate Proportions" picture, I estimated Adolin in Shardplate to be around 6'6"/200cm. So yeah, I based the proportions on that. And in Shardplate, when you touch things through your gauntlets, you can feel what you touch through the Plate. Lesson 1 of Shardbearing is jumping off the roof, Lesson 2 is eating dinner, Lesson 20 is hugging someone without breaking them.

  11. Just in case anyone is curious. Peter answered my question he told me they wear shoes or boots! So that's a no on the barefoot. I'm thinking I like the idea of the roman legionnaire sandals. I'll have to try out a few different things to see what I like the best.

  12. Being an active Pokémon fan, seeing this craze is very... odd. It makes me happy, though! But it's really odd to see so many people suddenly obsessed by something I myself have been fairly obsessed by for so long... And without the knowledge those years have given me. It's a very different experience from when Pokémon was completely new, for me AND everyone else. Like, I saw someone ask "Is there a rare Pokémon for every element?" That seems like a question by someone who thinks the Pokémon were designed for this game, rather than the other way around... and I'm not even sure what they meant by "elements" there. Types, I guess? But then, what about dual types? I dunno... For now, I'll enjoy being able to talk about Pokémon with random people and have them actually being interested. I even got to brag about my Pokédex from the main games to someone I had never met before! Oh, and about team Harmony: There are three teams in the game, based around the three legendary birds from the first generation. Some players have shown animosity to opposing teams (though most are just joking around), so some people decided to make an "unofficial" team to promote friendliness between the other teams. They based that team on Lugia, who (spoiler alert) makes the three birds stop causing chaos in the second Pokémon movie.

  18. @Delightful Nope. The current status quo for Superman, going forward, seems to be about expanding the Superman family line: - The Clark Kent from a parallel universe (where he married Lois Lane and had a son) is joining the Justice League and heading up the Superman title. -Lex Luthor seems to be heading up Action Comics, and he's adopted the name and image of his "dear departed friend" Superman. -Kenan has his own book, as above. -Lois Lane is getting super powers, and going to start staring in her own book, Superwoman. -Supergirl is getting another comic this audutmn, featuring her protecting National City in conjunction with the DEO; basically, appealing for fans of the show. -Superman's Son (Jon) and Batman's Son (Damien) are staring in their own title now, too. So far, no one knows Kenan even exist, but once they do? It'll be interesting to see how they react to him. We have no idea what his powers or limits are, though. He got his powers since the Ministry of Self-Reliance claimed to have a way to replicate Superman's powers... but they stopped the experiment before it could be finished. The issue ended with him exhibiting flight and heat vision, but we don't know what other powers he has, or how strong they are, and we have no idea what kryptonite would do to him. (My guess is... nothing. Kryptonite affects Kryptonians because they are aliens, whereas Kenan is human. Unless this experiment changed that, he should be in the clear. On the other hand, I can't see someone giving Superman powers to a kid with no way to control him, and Dr Omen seemed convinced Bat-Ma and Wonder-Woman could take Kenan down if necessary, and I'm sorry. I'm gushing about comics again, aren't I?)

  24. Hey everyone, so the first volume of the White Sand graphic novel has been out for two weeks and guess what. It just hit #2 on the New York Times Graphic Novel Bestseller List! I for one can't wait until the next one. If you've read it and want to discuss it check out our reactions thread here (we also have a thread to discuss it within the context of the prose version here). In other news the Mistborn: House War Kickstarter is still going strong. It has raised over $191,000 and still has a week to go. It is currently working on the last of the originally announced stretch goals (to replace two of the markers with some really cool looking miniatures of Kelsier and a Steel Inquisitor). They've also revealed a new stretch goal to add 6 more Problem cards (in addition it will increase the number of landscape sleeves in the card sleeve add-on by 25). Also Alex Flagg of Crafty Games, Designer/Writer for the Mistborn Adventure Game and Lead developer for Mistborn: House War will be doing an AMA over on Reddit today from Noon to 2:00 PM PDT. So go check that out if you want to ask what kind of Misting he would be, or what it's like working with Brandon and the rest of Team Sanderson!

  25. I think that we're looking in the wrong place with the Fleet story. In my mind there are two places that the ending could be held. Theory 1 The desolations come in cycles. I can see the ending scene being the similar tos the Prelude, with the Heralds again abandoning the Oathpact - though perhaps for a different reason (because it isn't needed any more). This way, the ending would have been shadowed from the start, and the series would tell the story of the Heralds' redemption after their initial abandonment. Theory 2 Kaladin takes up the shard of Honor. "Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do." This makes me think of him, somewhat reluctantly, taking up the shard, and trying to do the best job he can with it. It would be a very small foreshadowing, but damnation if that quote isn't awesome.

  26. These trailers were awesome, and gave me chills! I personally thought it gave away a little too much though, so I decided to try my hand at it! A magnificent sword is plunged into a rock with eight others sticking out. A space for a tenth one is left empty. Lirin’s voice: "The Ten Heralds were sent to teach mankind.” Kalak is shown walking away from the Blade. Kal’s voice: “But they were demons.” Lirin’s voice: “That would be the Radiants, Kal. You’re mixing them up. They’re the order of knights the Heralds founded.” *Flash of the two Radiants from Dalinar’s vision fighting the dark creatures.* “Who were demons.” “They were not demons, they were just men who had too much power.” *Radiants shown standing in front of the fort from Dalinar’s vision, summoning Blades, looking grim.* *Fade to black* ~~~ Voiceover: “There are four whom we watch. The first is the surgeon." Lirin’s voice: “There are two kinds of people in this world, son. Those who save lives, and those who take lives.” *Flashes of Kaladin over the young, bleeding girl, trying to fix her, and him on the battlefield with Amaram’s army.* Kaladin’s Voice: “And what about those who protect and defend? The ones who save lives by taking lives?” *Cut to Kaladin running out to fight the Shardbearer, seen from Cenn’s viewpoint low on the ground” Kaladin’s men are being killed around him and it cuts to him in the slave cart.* *Syl whips around him and his eye catches her before it cuts away to young Kal as he hears, “That’s like trying to stop a storm by blowing harder. You can’t protect by killing,” and his face falls.* ~~~ Voiceover: “The second is the assassin.” Szeth cups Stormlight lamps in the king’s hallway. A guard abruptly yells, “You there!” Szeth breathes in Light, and the hall grows dark. Flash forward a bit to one guard on the ground, Szeth summons his Blade. The remaining guard yells “Shardbearer! A Shardbearer assaults the king’s hall!” Szeth flips around in the air and lands on the ceiling. Smash cut of him slicing through men and flying down the hallway. Glimpses of him fighting the king and then him outside with the king impaled on a beam. “I’m sorry.” ~~~ Voiceover: “The third is the liar.” *Shallan’s hair blows to the side as we see her back as she sails into Kharbranth, she clutches her sketchbook, the city is displayed before her.* *Shallan turns a corner in the Conclave she gasps softly when she sees Jasnah Kholin* *Shot focuses on Soulcaster in Jasnah's hand then switches to her in the alley with her Soulcaster hand raised, light flowing from it towards the criminals, the men running from it.* “You killed them!” “Do you condone what those men were planning to do?” “Of course not, but that doesn’t make what you did right, either!” “Am I a monster or a hero?” Shallan’s face hardens and the screen fades to black. ~~~ Voiceover: “The last is the highprince.” “Six years in this war of Vengeance,” Dalinar says as we see him sitting on his horse. Adolin and Renarin watch him in the background. “All wars are games. To fight, to kill, to win,” we hear Roion say. Soldiers slay Parshendi and the ones remaining run. The soldiers look over at the great shell larva. A gemheart is pulled from the shell. “Sometimes the prize is not worth the costs.” Dalinar, Adolin, and Bashin look apprehensively across towards a chasm as a chull pulling a frayed rope runs from it, bleating. The chasmfiend climbs up out of the chasm. Cut of Dalinar running, pulling on his helmet, and summoning his Shardblade towards the beast. ~~~ Voiceover: “The world can change." *Kaladin runs with his bridge crew, beginning a charge against the Parshendi, blood running down his shoulders.* *Dalinar fights in a sea of Parshendi, slicing through them, Adolin is visible in the distance.* *Kaladin and Bridge Four shoving their bridge across the chasm and soldiers cross immediately. Voiceover: “These four people are key." *Dalinar pauses in the battle and looks at the carnage around him and whispers “Almighty…”* (bass drop) *Bridge crews around Kaladin fall, dozens of bodies on the rock as Sadeas army gets in formation behind them.* *Shallan in a room sitting in a pool of blood.* *Parshendi swarm on a group of Kholin soldiers from the distance.* *Dalinar sits in a room bound to a chair screaming and writhing as thunder blasts outside.* *Szeth runs through a Stormlit room of richly dressed people, the room dimming as he runs through Lashing people sideways, crying.* *Kaladin, strung up, is hit by the stormwall.* (fades to black) (pause) ~~~ LIFE BEFORE DEATH (Words on black screen in Stormlight font) Kaladin stands in hard but weakening rain before the Honor Chasm, tears mixing with raindrops. STRENGTH BEFORE WEAKNESS (Words on black screen in Stormlight font) Dalinar charges the chasmfiend alone towards Elhokar in his gold Shardplate, arrows whiz over him towards the beast. JOURNEY BEFORE DESTINATION (Words on black screen in Stormlight font) Doors with the Knights Radiant chart swing open in front of Shallan into the Veil. ~~~ The world dissolves around Shallan into Shadesmar, and we see her begin to fall. Szeth attacks three Shardbearers, two in Shardplate, one wearing a crown (the Veden king). Dalinar and Adolin are surrounded by Parshendi on the Tower, crying out. Kaladin, at the front of the bridge, screams as the four men around him are killed by arrows. ~~~ (fade to black) THEN, EITHER Tien’s face is shown smiling. “It’s not as bad as it seems, Kaladin. You’ll see.” OR *Lirin, face illuminated by the goblet of diamond spheres, says “Somebody has to start. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right.”* ~~~ (Fade to black) TITLE DATE (end) ~~~~~~~~ I hope y'all like it! Let me know what you guys think!

  27. Trailer for the Way of Kings. Wit's voice: When you beat an iron sword relentlessly, it hardens. When you leave it alone, it rusts away. Let me tell you a story. =o=o=o=o=o The party, camera panning around the revellers. We see spren floating around, we see Jasnah looking disapproving and Dalinar dead drunk, but only briefly. We see a flash of White as the Assassin stalks down a corridor. Two guards notice him and charge. The Assassin bursts into light. Cut to Szeth by the dead body of the King, kneeling. "I'm sorry." =o=o=o=o=o= "We came here for Vengeance, but all I see if frivolity and competition." Dalinar from behind, looking over the Shattered Plains and the arrayed warcamps.Adolin averts his eyes. Sadeas snorts. "Why can't you just relax? Why can't you be just like everyone else?" "I cannot be like everyone else." Sadeas leaves, laughing. "That honor of yours is going to get you killed some day." =o=o=o=o=o=o=o Voiceover: There are two kinds of people in this world, son. Those who save lives, and those who take lives. A young Kal, working in the surgery with his father: "What about those who kill to protect?" A battlefield on a rocky landscape, from the eyes of Cenn. Kaladin leading them into battle. The Shardbearer. White flash, cut to Kaladin shivering in a cage. Kaladin looks up to see Syl floating over, a tiny translucent girl. Her light shines on his face. Her voice: Why do men cry? =o=o=o=o=o=o=o Shallan's voice: “Expectation wasn't just about what people expected of you. It was about what you expected of yourself.” Shallan clutching a sketchbook, following Jasnah. Her eyes are fixed on the Soulcaster. She is smiling, cut to her in her room alone scheming and drawing plans. A cryptic voice: Let go of your lies. (fade to black) (pause) (bass drop) Szeth lashing himself to the ceiling, running towards two Shardbearers. His Blade appears in his hands. Dalinar sitting alone in a tent, screaming and writhing. Kaladin on a bridge run, screaming as blood trickles down his shoulders and arrows kill those around him Shallan in a room in a pool of blood. (fade to black) (pause) Words against A black screen as music builds to a crescendo. Speak again the Ancient oaths. "Life before Death." Lightning illuminates Kaladin before the Honor Chasm, tears mingling with rain. "Strength before Weakness." Dalinar charging at the Chasmfiend in full Shardplate to protect Elhokar "Journey before Destination." Shallan turning from a ship and running back to Khabaranth. (pause) "The Knights Radiant shall rise again." Music climaxes A shot of Szeth running among people, lashing them left and right. A shot of Shallan entering Shadesmar. A shot of Dalinar and Adolin surrounded on the Tower, shouting their final battlecries. A shot of Kaladin's boots thumping on the bridge, clearing the chasm onto the awaiting Parshendi. Syl screaming "Speak the Words!" THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE: THE WAY OF KINGS =o=o=o=o=o=o Wit's voice, chattily: “Can you feel it? Something just changed. I believe that’s the sound the world makes when it pisses itself.”

No, Meta would never vote on a teammate just for distancing. Of course not. >> That's not proof. That's not even close to proof. *goes back to writing post*

  31. So I was checking up with my Deviant Art when I found this recent pic by Jazzy-Kandra (Please check out the link and tell him hi) http://www.deviantart.com/art/Melaan-621536006 When I saw it I instantly thought, "What if we were to write a story about the characters from Alloy of Law as if they were High School students attending a Elendel High School as normal students? Heck what if we did that with ANY of the Brandon Sanderson books!?!" Now I know this is probably not the first time someone has thought of this. I am reminded of the `Attack on Titan Junior High' series. Literally just using the characters in a completely different/more normal setting. But if there is anyone who fancies the idea, write a quick scene as how you would see the series. If you know of such a project that already exists, please leave a link so we can all check it out! I look forward to all the submissions, and when I can I'll write up one myself. Have fun!

  32. For the sake of clarity, we know that there is a gap of some amount of time between Stormlight Archive book 5 and book 6. The series is a 10-book epic fantasy broken into two parts: 1-5 and 6-10. We do not, as far as I know, have a solid number on how much of a time gap exists between book 5 and 6.

  33. There are those who believe the desolation will not come again. Even the heralds seem to have hoped for that. (Jezrien to Kelek in the Prologue: "We'll tell them we won ... Who knows, maybe that will prove true?" (Quoted roughly from memory) I don't see why the faithful order shouldn't have the same hope. As for to whom Szeth spoke, I think there's currently no better answer than 'The Stone Shamanate of Shinovar', whatever that is exactly. I'd guess their spritual leadership at least, maybe political as well. Some kind of ruling body. I'm not sure Szeth, under Nalan's guidance, will align with whom he tried to kill before. Whatever Nalan's motives, he is evidently bent on killing the very KR that Dalinar is trying to gather. However, I have no doubt of Chaos ! This topic has really roused my curiosity. I've tried to find out what I could about the Shin beliefs (other than their reverence for stone). There's really not much to go by, most of it is in two passages. Everything else I could find just repeats part of what is found in those. The first is the one the beginning of which I cited in my OP (WoR Interlude 10) The second is in the scene between Szeth an Nalan (WoR Ch. 88 The Man Who Owned the Winds): Several other questions come to mind: - What exactly did Szeth tell them? What has he seen or felt? - Who are the 'spirits (Shin) / spren (Nalan) of the stones' that promised the Voidbringers were no more? - What is behind that whole 'truthless' business? What are the shamanate's motives for such punishment? - What is Nalan planning? I thought about this some more, trying to do so independently of my OP theory. This is what I would guess from the few hints we have: The ShiSha (Shin Shamanate) hope that their 'spirits' (whoever those are, I have no idea) are right about the Voidbringers being gone for good, but they are not as sure as they claim. In fact they worry that certain events - e.g. a refounding of the KR - could lead to another desolation. In this I think they might be sitting in the same boat with Nalan. (There seem to be pretty different theories about cause and effect flying around among Sons of Honor, Shin, Honor himself etc.) Szeth saw or felt something - my guess would be he had a spren trying to bond with him. I have no idea how else he could have known about the Voidbringers' return years before it happened. And in that case, the punishment makes some sort of twisted sense: condemn the budding Radiant to a life of murder - he's certain to loose his spren that way (constantly going against life before death). Give him an Honorblade: helps him be a good murderer and will hide any real Radiant effect by overlaying it. Whatever the reason, Shin and Nalan seem to agree that the KR are not wanted nowadays. So why does Nalan want to send Szeth to the Shamanate for judgment? ... And again, I revert to my OP. (I am a gal of one idea currently, it seems.) Nalan wants all KR dead. Including those belonging to that one remaining order. Nightblood would be an excellent tool for killing a whole group of people who have proven themselves not the most ethical of rulers. What remains a mystery to me is the whole stone thing: the Shin's reverence for stone and their reluctance to walk on it, the 'Stone spirits'... haven't found any good explanation there yet.

  34. I would completely endorse Kaisa's comments. If you're committed to Amethyst Tower and want to write and finish it, than don't be afraid of getting the slings and arrows (constructive ones!) and going back to adjust it. If it were me (which it's not!), I would submit some more to get a fuller range of comments on the chapters proper (i.e. not just the prologue), before going back to do a big revision on half your book, and then get comments that you could have picked up in the first edit.

  36. Managed to get through both Fifth Season (definitely where my Hugo vote is going; the only other that I've read to completion was Uprooted which, while not bad at all, struck me as kind of pedestrian) and Too Like the Lightning (same, I think, but for next year; be quite surprised if it doesn't land on the ballot) during my brief time on vacation. Fifth Season sure was a trip; it did my absolute least favourite thing ever that you can do with a POV but by the end it sure had me going 'it absolutely had to be this way'. I phrase circuitously because spoilers, of course. Both really hard for me to get into, but once I had the time with not much else to do, they both made me really glad I put in the effort.

  39. Blueberry's house was full of holes. Not like Swiss cheese and not like a tree full of termites, but like someone had run through and punched all the walls. Maybe for funsies. Sometimes the thought of punching walls seemed fun to her, but then she thought about how it would hurt her knuckles and it didn't seem so fun anymore. But Blueberry didn't talk about how the holes appeared, so Funtimes guessed that it wasn't fun that made them. And putting it back wouldn't be as fun as she'd hoped. Blueberry wanted it back the way it was. No polka dots. Thoughts of a house with neon plaid walls and polka dot floors were dashed from Funtimes' mind as Blueberry told her what she wanted. "I like my house white. It just feels right to me that way. And why would you just turn parts of my walls into polka dots? Although they are dots, so I guess only having them in some places would make sense." Phooey. She didn't know what she was missing out on. "Still, that seems like a weird design decision, breaking up a pattern like that." It wouldn't be weird! Funtimes nearly spoke up. It wouldn't be weird at all, it'd be amazing and exciting because every wall would be different and no matter where you looked you'd have something new to look at. "Not that it really matters; I mean I want it to stay white anyway. Um, can I maybe do something for you while you work, like preparing some food or watch a movie… no you couldn’t really do that while working, unless we maybe pull the television behind you, no that wouldn’t work with the cables, so… maybe I can keep you entertained?” Entertained. Now that was a word Funtimes liked. She found herself hopping up and down, clapping her hands. "Ooh ooh ooh we could all sing campfire songs! No—Disney songs! Like this!" She pranced over to the nearest wall, knitting the hole together with a wave of her hand. "It's a whole new waaaaaallllll, a fantastic place to hang your keeeeyyyyyys….." Upgrade's hand hit his arm, and Quota felt nothing. Not at first. Then it surged through him, an energy pouring through his veins. Power. Pure, raw power, itching at his skin almost to the point of pain, begging, pleading him to do something with it. To let it amplify Calamity's gift, send it as far as it would go. He couldn't hold back. Couldn't keep it in. A grin spread across his face as he let loose. He didn't direct it, not at first. He simply let it out, savoring the feeling of courage dampening, happiness bleeding away. He didn't know who they belonged to, and he didn't care. But there was a city out there, a whole city filled with people that he could reach. All of them, he could reach every single one of them from where he stood, and if he couldn't, then he had to see how many he could hit before the power faded away. So he reached out. He poured out his power. And he felt it, flowing toward him in waves: Despair. Hopelessness. Defeat. Rippling toward him, responding to him. He demanded despair, and they complied. "Well?" Upgrade's voice broke through his giddiness. "Is it working?" Quota couldn't speak. He threw his head back and laughed.

  40. Night 4: Mob’s Rules Each day, the noise on the streets in and around Luthadel quieted more and more -- a frightening reminder that more people died with every passing day, and that those alive were fearing more for their own lives than the common good. An angry mob assembled in Ahlstrom Square, raucous and violent. “There are traitors amongst us!” one woman shouted. “We must find them and tear them apart!” “I want justice! I want retribution! I want… uh, violence!” “ANARCHY!” one man shouted, laughing at the ashen sky in madness. “People, please!” Vela spoke, standing atop a podium in the center of the riotous crowd. “We are an angry mob, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try to find and kill people in a civilized manner! Please, be patient!” “But is that not the point of an angry mob?” someone pointed out. “Are we not to be angry?” “YEAH, ANGER!” the mob shouted. “Are we not to repeat what some random person says?” “YEAH, REPETITION!” the mob repeated in glee. “Are we not to ignore what other people tell us to do?” “YEAH, IGNORANCE!” “But hold on,” a young man noted. “Isn’t Vela trying to tell us all what to do?” “YEAH!” the mob repeated. Vela’s eyes widened. “Wait, what?” “Doesn’t is seem like she’s trying to control us?” “YEAH!” “Then that means she’s a SPIKED!” “YEAH, A TRAITOR!” “Then let’s get ‘er!” “YEAH!” “Wait, stop!” Vela shouted in protest, but she could not stop the flow of the giant mob that had formed. “I am a loyal member of House Cett! I have done nothing wrong! Listen to reason!” - - - - - Vela (Burnt Spaghetti) was lynched! She was an unspiked non-Allomancer from the Cett faction! 41. Trellium is a fanon term that I put into the wiki after talking to the other wiki admins. "God metal related to an unknown Shard" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and isn't a very good name for a wiki page. We wouldn't call it raysium or bavadinium unless it is explicitly confirmed to be related to Odium or Autonomy. And I wouldn't say it has absolutely no canonical basis. It is a very logical temporary term as the in-world characters believe it to be related to the Shard referred to as Trell.

  44. Kaladin is now an open Radiant, who saved the king and Dalinar in perhaps one of the most flashiest rescues ever written, and he's known throughout the camps for how Dalinar trusts him. Someone's going to have to put up some serious falsified evidence up to even being up the notion that Kaladin killed Sadeas. Which of course, might happen. But no, I don't think he's in any immediate danger. Plus, iirc, wasn't Kaladin talking to Dalinar when Adolin murdered Sadeas at the tower? I think he has a solid alibi and enough people to back him up.

  45. As far as their feelings towards each other are concerned I feel that they currently do like each other to varying degrees but I don't feel that it has blossomed to anything substantial. Shallan broke the ice around Kaladins boy/girl feelings so I think he's in a more puppy love faze, where Shallan feels that Kaladin is intriguing. I honestly don't believe that Sanderson is going to be so obvious in his relationship matching and thus I see these two ending in a type of Rand/Egwene affair (WoT). I will say if these two do end up getting together I'd have no problem with the romance, it just feels to easy to pick out. A thought that has been bugging me, however, is what about the prospect of Jasnah and Kaladin as a potential match? That could be an interesting romance.

  46. I think it is way too early to call it "like" yet, whatever it is that passed between them. An interest, surely, but one that may or may not span into romantic desire. Adolin however, is definitely crushing on Shallan, no questions here. Shallan definitely likes (like not love, two different things) Adolin, she cares for him, but I would not call it love, not yet. As for a main character dying (which is totally unnecessary if you ask me), everyone keeps on saying it has to be Adolin... Wild guess, why not Kaladin? This is sure to draw some emotional response from the reader... Or Shallan? Let's kill Shallan then nobody gets to be with her. FYI, I am just joking here. I absolutely hate the idea of main characters dying as I sincerely believe they are all more interesting alive then dead. If Brandon wants to kill someone, he's got a hordes of important secondary characters that can die.
