  2. Week 5 An unusual sight greeted Dalinar when he arrived at the command tent today. Usually his Lighteyes waited for his presence to start arguing, but today it sounded as though they'd decided to get on with it early. If only they had started earlier still, and he didn't have to be here to hear any of it. "I'm telling you, it's that damned Darkeyed woman. What's her name..." "Odysa?" Brightness Kenara suggested, looking through the list of prime suspects that the five of them had compiled together before her. Brightlord Kaddar snapped his fingers. "Yes, that's it," he said, grinning a little. "I mean... It only makes sense that they'd use women to spy on us, wouldn't it? They need people who can write!" Kenara rapped her pen on the desk irritably. "Are you suggesting that I might be one, Brightlord Kaddar?" "Well, that makes sense too!" Kaddar declared cheerfully. "I mean, who else sees so much of what Dalinar... plans..." he trailed off as he saw Kenara's withering gaze. Clearly she was not amused. "Okay, maybe not then. But I still think that she's a good place to start." "I disagree," Brightlord Ace said, shaking his head. "I fear that Jain was not the only one lying about his true loyalties here." His eyes flickered over to Brightlord Jost, then back to Kaddar. "Some people seem to protest a little too much." Jost stirred from his seat. "Are you suggesting what I think you are suggesting, Ace?" He was not in a good mood. Firstly, there was Tal, sitting opposite him. And now he was being forced to talk to Ace. Four weeks in close proximity to one another had not made that any easier. "Perhaps I am," Ace said, turning back to face him. "Sometimes I wonder if the real reason you're annoyed with our young friend here is just because you wanted to take that blade back to your master. Which is it? Roion? Vamah?" Jost stood up at such a speed and force that it knocked the small table between them all over, Kenara's papers scattering in every direction. "The only one I serve is Highprince Dalinar!" He said, staring Ace right in the eyes. "I challenge you to a duel, Brightlord Ace, unless you're too cowardly to face me." The room went silent, all of the Lighteyes, Dalinar included, looking at Ace. He looked away. "I apologise, Brightlord Jost. I went too far." "No?" Jost looked down at him, his voice filled with a mixture of curiosity and some small amount of elation. "I don't think that's what the problem is... You two, seize him!" Kaddar and Tal each took an arm, though Ace did not attempt to escape. He looked up at Jost. "You can't be serious, Jost. You think me a Spy just because I insulted you? As I always do?" "It is claimed that someone is interfering with our orders," Dalinar said, as he finally made his presence known. "If that is true, then it can only really be one of you five from this list," he said, reaching over Kenara to tap the paper, assuming it to be the correct one. "Six, perhaps, if that damned half-Darkeyed soldier is still messing about and pretending to be one of us." "Dalinar, sir," Ace said, looking to him. He wrenched his arm out of Tal's grasp, the boy not having as much strength as a more finely trained Lighteyed soldier, and then looked at Kaddar, who dropped his arm without question. Ace stood up, and walked over to the desk. "Let me prove my loyalty to you." * Two days later, Ace was beginning to think that was a bad idea. Leading the assault on Prince Roion's troops, he was fine with. It would be a fierce battle, with glory and renown for all, even the dead. No, what he was less fine with was the fact that he had only been given a Darkeyes equipment - a spear and some rather shoddy leather to protect himself with. He was also somewhat worried by the fact that Brightlord Kaddar was the one who was actually giving the orders. The man was clearly as sane as Jost was angry. Still, there had to be a reason, whatever that might have been. Brightlord Kaddar gave the order to advance, and Ace and the rest of his troops (for he still commanded a respectable force, despite his poorly equipped status) obeyed the order. They hit Prince Roion's troops like the Weeping - calmly, but with a slow sense of inevitability. It wasn't a battle as Ace was used to. Not with this unfamiliar weapon, or this close to the actual front of the battle. Not with the shoulder-to-shoulder advance of his fellow soldier, just one man in the mass of spears that stabbed towards their foe. A cry came from somewhere nearby. "Archers!" Their foe retreated, clearly wary of being caught in the oncoming rain of arrows. They pushed to close the gap, but Ace stayed behind. He looked up, across the battlefield. Prince Roion's archers were meant to be the best in all the princedoms. But even so, he could barely see them, so far away on the horizon. Surely they couldn't hit anything from that dist- "Get down!" He was tackled from the side, and hit the floor rolling, an armoured spearman falling on top of him as arrows pelted their position. The man stood up quickly, picking an arrow out of the back of his armour where it had only slightly penetrated. "Crazy Lighteyes," Ace could hear him mutter as he disappeared back off into the fray. * Kaddar couldn't see what was so bad about the spear as a weapon. It was not a Lighteye's weapon, that was true, but it had one redeeming feature - all the fighting was done on the other end of it - that is, not right in front of him. It lessened the Thrill a little, made it easier to keep a clear head, and not be swallowed up by adrenalin. "Report?" he asked, not looking up from or halting in the writing of his letter as a runner entered the command tent. "The left flank is suffering, sir," the young man reported, saluting in what he probably thought was a smart manner. "Many of their Officers have been killed by Prince Roion's archers, and they are in disarray." "I see," Kaddar nodded, as he continued to write his letter. He should probably get on to that, but a few seconds wouldn't matter all that much. The runner stood there, waiting, until Kaddar finished his letter, pressing his seal to the envelope and sealing it from all eyes. He threw on his set of armour and grabbed his spear from where it lay against the tent's wall. "Very well, let's go and see the damage." But not too close, of course. He didn't want to become a target, just like his officers were. The runner took him a short distance from the front on the left flank, where his forces were apparently now weakest. But as far as he could tell from where he could see, the command structure was still in place. Suspicions went through his mind, and he turned to the runner, but too late. As he did, a knife twisted into his side, cutting through the armour as though it were no thicker than paper. But as far as he could tell, it was not an especially dangerous wound. "Oh, damnation," the runner muttered, a little less irritated than Kaddar would have expected, taking out another knife. "They said they'd replaced your armour, all I had to do was stab you. Well, I'll just do it again, while no-one's looking. If anyone asks, I stabbed you once, alright?" Kaddar raised his spear, his other hand at his side. The messenger smirked a little and pushed against the spearhead with his dagger. The wood cracked a little, and then the spearhead fell off, as rot was revealed beneath. "Just try to die quickly and quietly." "Brightlord, sir!" The messenger turned slightly to look at the source. A few soldiers were running to his rescue. Kaddar took the opportunity and pulled the dagger out of his side, holding it between him and his would-be killer and discarding his damaged spear. The runner scowled. "Next time, your Brightlordiness," he promised, as he ran off, away from Kaddar's saviours. Ace was lynched, but saved by a Guardsman! Ace (6): Jost Joslin, Eoldren, Norlav, Kenara, Odysa, Kaddar Jost Joslin (3): Torwel, Ace, Aonar Faialen Odysa (2): Newan, Mek Marand (1): Reihmer Reihmer (1): Marand Kaddar was wounded in the Skirmish, but saved by a Guardsman! It seems the army is deep within Prince Roion's territory, as at the end of the week, there will be a Battle against Prince Roion. The Cycle will end at 8 PM on Wednesday.

  3. Aaaaaaaaaaaaw yeaaaaaaaaah!!! Mek glanced over the chaos of the battlefield, watching Kaddar. "Archers!" someone shouted. Mek peered over his shieldmate to see Roion's finest corps getting into position to make a final, desperate volley against the Kholin army. Mek looked back at Kaddar, who apparently didn't even know how to use his shield, a supposedly "darkeyes" tool of war, for cover. Idiot! He's going to get himself killed! Mek tried to get there and help. He was fairly certain that Kaddar wasn't the spy, but Mek had chosen to spend the week watching him anyway. That spanreed made Kaddar a target, and Mek wanted to catch anyone who moved against the man. Not that it had mattered. No one had attacked him. Well, no one had sabotaged him, at least. Mek had heard rumors that he had been sent to the vanguard to die, by Dalinar's orders. Forget assassins. The idiot was going to get killed out here by enemy archers. Mek couldn't move fast enough to help him, so he just ducked down and covered himself with his shield. Through the corner of his eye he caught a figure moving toward Kaddar, knife in hand. Mek almost looked up to see who it was, but a slew of arrows hit his shield. When he looked up, Eoldren was stumbling away from Kaddar's corpse. Corpse? No. Storms, the man was alive. A guardsman must have saved him. Was it Eoldren? Perhaps. Mek knew one thing, however. He had to come forward with this information. If Eoldren was the would-be assassin, well, that was definitely important to the investigation. Dalinar's troops crashed against the archers, and it looked like his army would win yet another battle. Storms, this almost feels unfair. maybe we should lose one every once in a while just to keep it interesting. Well, then again, the stakes were real here. Probably best that they keep winning. This, however, was just a light rainfall compared to the Highstorm they'd be facing next week. They had only fought a fraction of Roion's army today, and in just five days they'd be ready to attack Roion once and for all, and finally get a break from all these incursions from the northeast. ---- Kinda got carried away with the RP. Anyway, I finally have some useful information to posit. I am a watchman, and was watching Kasimir this week. Eoldren performed an action (ie. a Shardblade kill, Eliminator vote, or Role action) on Kasimir this round. Yippee! I actually did something! Anyway, while I understand Eoldren could have been the lovely guardsman who saved Kas, I'm voting him as one of the eliminators that targeted him. Eoldren

  5. AAAAAHHHH that was amazing. He got a picture of me in my shirt! Here are my questions and his answers: mail-mi: So I have a lot of questions. Brandon: Okay. M: Could you spike Elantrian-ness? Like, could you Hemalurgically spike Elantrian-ness? B: Theoretically, yes. M: Could you out of a Reod Elantrian? The zombie ones? B: Um, yes you could. M: You could? B: So what you would be spiking there is their connection to...to the planet, first. That's gonna be the big important thing. So you're going to overwrite your connection. Um, and then you're going to....it's going to be a complicated process because you're going to have to spike the actual ability to have been transformed, that's gonna be harder. M: Okay. B: Does that make sense? M: Yeah, so it's gonna take two spikes. B: It's gonna take two spikes. M: Alright. B: And you gonna have to get the right connection to the right place. Let's say you spike somebody from MaiPon, and then you spike an Elantrian, you're not going to be able to use it, you're not connected to the right area. M: Okay. Most of my questions are actually about the Reod Elantrians. B: Okay. M: So, could they be felt by Lifesense? B: They would, um...they are in the middle of a transformation. I would say that yes they could be, but you're going to get like a stutter is what I'd guess you would get, it's like you would get a...a flashing. M: Because they're kind of alive, and kind of not alive. B: Yeah. And so, yeah, you'd just get a flashing sort of....something. M: Okay. What would a Shardblade do to them? B: Um, a Shardblade would...oh boy. A Shardblade...a Shardblade would still be dangerous to them, um, the trick is, um, the Shardblade's gonna treat them half alive, half dead. So, it probably would be kind of a flicker, so it depends on when you hit them. It might cut the arm off. M: It might cut the arm off... B: And it might just leave it dead. M: So can you affect them with Emotional Allomancy? B: Yes. M: How easy would it be to pull metal through them? B: Pull metal out of them.... Easier, M: Easier than a regular human? B: Yes. M: Okay, I have a couple more. Is Nightblood's sheath made out of aluminum? B: That is an excellent question that nobody has asked me yet! Um...I will RAFO that. M: Oooh, I get a card. I got the card. B: That is an excellent question. M: Okay, and um, I have one more. Acutally, two more. Does a more Investiture-poor world make it so its magics are easier to use off-world? Because, you said that Scadrial is really Investiture-poor, and it can be used easily off-world, but Roshar is very Investiture-rich, and how can you get stormlight off of Roshar? B: Yeah. Um, I would say that there is a correlation. M: There is a correlation? B: Mhm. M: Okay, cool. And then, just one more, shouldn't the rest of Roshar be more Earth-like, more Shinovar-like, kind of, with Cultivation on Roshar? B: Um, you are mistakenly assuming that Cultivation means Earth-like flora and fauna. Roshar is very bountiful, and, um, like it's not a barren land. Um, Roshar is very, um.... zas678: Thriving? B: It's thriving. Yeah, it just has a different ecology. Um, you're mistakenly assuming that our ecology is the only sort that can be bountiful. And then I got a picture! Ah, I'm so happy!

  7. Stripped to his waist and sweat pouring off him Norlav gulped down another ladle of warm water. Passing the ladle to the one standing beside him, Norlav studied his companion. Tall, tanned and well muscled he looked like he could be Norlavs twin; he even had the same heterochromatic eyes and carried a halberd instead of the standard spear. The only real difference between the two was a tattoo the other had, three overlapping diamonds on the inside of his arm just below the elbow. They had been training together for the last couple of weeks but neither one had managed to gain the upper hand in their sparring. One day Norlav would win, the next it would be the newcomer standing as the victor. “I would like to thank you for the sparring practice friend. It isn't often that I am pushed to my limits as often as you do it.” “Anytime, I also am rarely pushed this hard. Should we both survive this stupid war, we might want to team up. There is a group of like-minded individuals that I work with from time to time that could use someone of your skill.” “Sounds good. By the way, what’s your name? We've been sparring all this time and I still don’t know who you are.” Shouldering his halberd he extended his hand. “The name is Alv. I won’t be around for a couple of days but I expect we will meet again.” Watching as Alv left, Norlav felt a chill creep along his spine. For those unaware I had a character named Alv in LG5 who was a heterochromatic cousin to Highprince Roion. Thought this would be a good place and time for them to meet. There is far too much blue in this game. As to who may or may not be a spy, I believe that Jasnah is clean. I am 98% certain of it which is the same percent that I think Kas and Wilson are clean. Sorry but you two are just too untrustworthy for me to fully believe in you.

  10. Hey guys. New to the forum. I've been doing a ton of research on the physical structure of the Cosmere and both the 17th Shard wikia and forum have been a ton of help. For a while now I've really wanted a visualization of the Cosmere. A rough map, at the very least. I've attached a photo of a VERY rough sketch of the Cosmere as it makes sense to me via the info I've found online. And really, istead of notes I just drew out the ten known planets as I went along. Tomorrow I hope to blow up the scale quite a bit, give it a ton more artistic flare, and make some semblance of sense of it. But as it is, from what I've gathered, there are two discernible planetary systems, although I'm sure there are more. The Greater Roshar System has been confirmed to include Roshar, Ashyn, and Braize. Visible to this system is a swath of "red stars," known from Roshar as Taln's Scar. There is definitely a second planetary system that includes Scadrial and Threnody, as we can assume both planets share the same sky. Both share an unusually bright patch of stars. In Threnody this is known as the Starbelt. Sanderson has mentioned that both Threnody and First of the Sun are Minor Shardworlds. That doesn't mean they're in the same system though. I can assume that First of the Sun literally means it's the closest planet to the star it orbits. I just don't know which star that would be. Sel is said to orbit a yellow star. Other than that, the other planets aren't extremely well mapped. For now I'll probably place Nalthis, Sel, Yolen, Taldain, and First of the Sun randomly on the map, clearly distinguished outside of the two other "known" systems, and/or perhaps as their own system. Unless someone has more information that I've yet to come across. I'll be including known moons. Correct me if I've mis-counted each planet's known moons, or just plain missed them. Roshar: 3 (Salas, Nomon, Nishin) Braize: 0 Ashyn: 0 Nalthis: 1 Threnody: 0 Scadrial: 0 Sel: 1 Yolen: 0 Taldain: 0 First of the Sun: 0 Are there any other Celestial bodies I should be aware of? Uninhabitable planets, star systems, etc.? And I've been able to find decent maps for the general layout for Scadrial and Roshar. But other than that I'm rather in the dark. If you have any knowledge of existing maps of any of these worlds, that'd be extremely welcome. Thanks guys. Depending on how this goes, I'd like to continue updating the map in the future as more information on planet system locales, and celestial bodies is forthcoming. This'll be the 2015 edition. Edit: Here's a more complete image, mapped out. Just beginning the inking stage.

  11. So, I've been working on a story featuring a main character who is a Compounder, and I found myself at one point experiencing a wee bit of self-consciousness over the whole thing. I, like many others (as I've seen from perusing some old topics), was running on the assumption that Compounding Twinborn would be super-duper rare. I mean, really, there are only 16 types of Compounders out of 256 different types of Twinborn. How many could there be alive at one time? I've seen people comment that it seems odd that there would be individual names for every single different type of Twinborn; would there even be one of each type alive at the same time? So I decided to gather some data and do some math. Hoo boy. Well, to begin with, that 16 out of 256 reduces down to 1 out of 16. (I am assuming that the different combinations of Twinborn are relatively evenly represented.) So, if a person on Scadrial were to meet 16 Twinborn in their lives, chances are that one of them would be a Compounder. Granted, 6.25% of Twinborn = Compounders is a pretty small percentage, but it's hardly infinitesimal. So really, the question of "how much of an arrogant twit am I for giving my main character this level of power?" starts to hinge on how many Twinborn are running around Scadrial. This is where things get interesting. The Alloy of Law MAG supplement has been anointed as canon until Brandon says otherwise. Within its pages, it states that Mistings and Ferrings occur in 1 out of 50 people. It also states these figures independently of each other; i.e. 1 out of 50 people is a Misting, and 1 out of 50 people is a Ferring. I will take what I hope is a reasonable assumption that the 1 out of 50 figure wasn't pulled from some random nether region and is unlikely to be contradicted. The statistical probability of an overlap between Mistings and Ferrings to create a Twinborn then takes 50 x 50 to come up 2500. Thus, on Scadrial, 1 in every 2500 people is a Twinborn. This is assuming an even distribution throughout the population, though, which may very well not be true. The MAG supplement also states that Ferrings skew more common (about 1 in 25) amongst the Terris enclaves, which would make them slightly less common amongst the general population. The Terris populations are smaller than the rest of the Basin at large, though, so it's not going to knock down the general numbers all that much. Still, to be on the conservative side, I'll skew that final figure to 1 in 5000. It's probably making them rarer then they really would be, but 5000 is a nice, easy number to work with. (Incidentally, this would also make AoL-era Twinborn at least twice as common as mere Mistings were during the Mistborn trilogy.) Now, in AoL, at one point Wax states that Elendel has several million people, possibly as many as 5 million. Fantastic! Another easy number to work with. 5 million divided by 5000 = a possible 1000 Twinborn. So, there are 256 different types of Twinborn, that leave us with between 3 and 4 of each type, with a total of 62 or 63 Compounders. And that's just in Elendel. Suddenly it doesn't seem so odd for there to be an individual name for every type of Twinborn after all.

Without him she would never have discovered Wolfkind. The processes he had used to do the first change had been painful and it had seemed to take forever. Sometimes Winter thought about thanking him. The other times she thought about tearing his throat out.

  18. Hmm... This is interesting, because I enjoyed the Story of Elantris very much. The themes on Religion, Romance, Politics, Social injustice, all fairly typical themes that appear in many books, but pulled off so well it wasn't an glorified pamphlet. However, Its not his best written book. Equally, White Sand was a very good read, mainly because it was so self contained, and was a nice change of pace from he universe shattering (Forgive the pun) of the events elsewhere in the Cosmere... My all time favorite though, has to go to "The Well Of Ascension". Its the classic second act of the trilogy. Earthshaking things are revealed, it ends on a dismal note, with friends lost the success of the good guys far from certain. A wonderfully portrayed siege, a marvelous villain in the form of Elend's father, the character of Zane, and the individual character arcs of Elend, Vin and Sazed were marvelous. A triumph.

  19. Once I have a few more RAFO cards, I want to laminate them all into a sheet and have Brandon sign it. It's ok. Were you the one reading Eye of the World? (bad habit: whenever somebody is reading a kindle, I peek to try and see if I can guess which book it is.) Peter, I said hi to you! As we were walking out of the building, I said "Peter Ahlstrom! Thanks for always answering questions on Twitter and 17th Shard!" I was wearing a black hat. Here were my questions. This is from memory, so it isn't verbatim, but zas678 wrote down the answers as I was asking them. Newan: Is the kandra worldhopper MeLaan? Brandon: Good question. *hands me a RAFO card* In upcoming Mistborn books, you are going to get to know a lot more of the kandra, so you will have a lot more options. Newan: Ooh. When the kandra worldhopper is off-world, er off-Scadrial, does she take the form of a human female? Brandon: Not all of the time. Newan: Has she spoken a word of dialogue in a non-Mistborn book? Brandon: I can't remember. Newan: Ok I have one more question. Is there some kind of connection between Szeth and Yelig-nar, the Unmade? Brandon: Hmm... Szeth has no more of a connection with Yelig-nar than anyone else does. Newan: Thank you so much!

  20. Spoilers below for words of radiance and extremely slight ones for wheel of time and mistborn I just wanted to see what everyone's favourite book by Sanderson is. I do not mean which series but which individual story he has written. It could be any novella, short story, etc (even the I am a stick one) or book in one of his series cosmere or non cosmere, wheel of time is included two but only the final three of course. What is your favourite individual story? For me it is tough as I really loved all three wheel of time books and I really enjoyed the way of kings but loved words of radiance ten times more. I also loved the first 2 mistborn books a lot, especially the second one for its intensity (most people seemed to find it not as good), the third was amazing but so dark at times it was tough. I think when it comes down to it I will choose Words of Radiance as I still cannot determine my favourite wheel of time by brandon (TGH was great I thought and advanced the story, TOM was awesome and did a lot of good stuff for storylines like Perrin and AMOL was the emotional and epic conclusion). I think I will choose words of radiance because despite it taking time for me to get into the series, the way of kings was bumpy for me and I had to slowly plug away at it over a month because I was busy and felt it was a little slow paced. Parts 4-5 were so awesome though that with all the plot points for book 2 I was really excited. I then spent lots of time on 17th reading stormlight theories+predictions and getting more excited. Then tor started building the hype train with all of the advertising for WOR with the glimpses of radiance, practically all of part 1 revealed in sample chapters which I read multiple times (gave me a problem later on as i still intended to work through part 1 when I got the book but it was like a third reread and there was all the unknown amazing chapters past part 1 but I had to work to get to them). There was also the way of kings rereads by tor and the analysis posts about the flora and fauna of roshar, etc. The cover of Kaladin vs Szeth also gave me major goosebumps because when Mr T sent szeth off to kill Dalinar I immediately thought about kaladin vs szeth. With all the awesome hype released I binge read the book in about 20 hours and it fulfilled and went beyond my high expectations while feeling like a truly epic experience that had almost zero disappointments. So overall book 2 of the stormlight archive is my favourite brandon book and I think it won't be surpassed for a couple years because I think stones unhallowed will be a little less insane in the sense that he won't focus on making an insanely massive and awesome book as he did for words of radiance because of the long delay between words of radiance and the way of kings. I think he will focus on fewer things in this book while still having tons of epicness. Then again that could make it better than book 2 perhaps. I am sure though that he will release an even greater stormlight book with an even more climactic feeling to it. anyway that is my opinion on words of radiance being my favourite book by brandon. What do you fellow 17th shard users consider your favourite brandon book?

  21. Hello. I'm probably way too into this stuff. My friends all curse me for introducing me to this series. Well, let's see then. I like long walks in the forest at night, my favorite type of invertebrate is the kraken, the most recent book I have finished was Good Omens, I am about to start reading American Gods, and if I could have any form of investiture I would be a Feruchemist, because it seems like one of the few you could use on Earth, and the name closely resembles what I might go to university for. How bout you people?

  22. Ketek started the cool thread of "Radiant Oaths you would swear." Today, sitting at 3am after working for 16 hours, and needing to wake up in another 6, I find myself here, glued to the interwebs, and unable to sleep. And a joke-thread was spawned! Oaths I would *never* swear, no matter how godlike the powers I would gain: I will go to bed at a reasonable hour I will always drive the speed limit I will only use the poll option for good I will only say nice things about the Star Wars prequel trilogies I believe that George Lucas, and not his beard, is responsible for the Star Wars prequels All of my oaths will be in absolutes, like putting the law above all else

  23. Forgive me if the following theory has been proposed/proved already. Introduction: During my daily conjecturing routine about the cosmere, a wild speculation came across my mind about Waxillium Ladrian, and is related to his marksmenship skills. Hypothesis: The seemingly "innate abilities" of characters that are magically-unrelated are caused by investiture, i.e. magical properties. Main argument: Wax is good with firearms, which I believe either in-world or out-world characters would concur. Firearms, in other words, are trajectory weaponry, utilizes projectiles , which, which involves our hand-eye coordination and sense of distance(more or less). Further more, I do reasonably believe that Wax is a nature in using guns, from the way he was described in AoL, and from a certain quote from Miles Dagouter (Don't remember, somebody help me). On the other hand, Wax is also a Coinshot, an allomantic steelpusher, able to push metals away from the Coinshot's body/location. In the cases where Coinshots pushes metallic objects with smaller mass than themselves, such objects will fly away from Coinshots, which in some sense are also projectiles. You might just think that "Yeah, it's convenient and definitely entertaining for Wax to have such setting", so what? What is the point bringing these two up, and why did I emphasis on the word projectile? Let me bring up something else first. In a certain WoB, Brandson mentioned that by gaining more investiture it grants different magical users a more powerful effect in their respective magic, but more importantly it expand the user's mental capacity(Citation help required). The first example was when Vin or Sazed take up the shard(s), which themselves are de facto immense amount of investiture, their cognitive abilities expand; the other being the residents of Nalthis, whereas with more Breath(investiture) grants further Heightenings, especially the Sixth Heightening and the Tenth Heightening, which grants "Instinctive Awakening" and "Mental Command", which are self-explanatory expanded mental abilities. Back to Wax. Everyone in the Cosmere is basically invested. Some with more investiture, some with less. And the people who are more invested are naturally regarded as a powerful [certain magic system, e.g. Allomancy, Awakening](Requesting more concrete evidence other than what I remember at the back of my mind). Wax is a powerful Coinshot, so it's logical to deduce that he is slightly more invested. And with the more investiture, the larger the mental capacity. Here is the twist. I speculate that as he is a Coinshot, his mind is expanded in a way so that he is more adapt with Coinshot abilities, so that he has a higher sense of balance in the air and with flying projectiles. And as his mind is somehow tweaked and enhanced after a certain fashion, he is better at shooting than others, as shooting are simply flying projectiles. Conclusion: I guess we could say that as people has a certain magical ability, they are invested and their mind are expanded in a certain and precise way, which its side effect will grant some noticeable and seemingly non-magical abilities. And the more powerful magical users, whom are more invested than others, are often found having a certain "secondary" ability that goes really well with their already-possessed magical abilities. Implications: I guess Shallan Davar's mnemonic abilities is still(?) one of the most speculated mysteries in the books, and I guess this theory applies to her as well. But first, I need to get something clear first. People might ask what makes Shallan posses more investiture? KR gain abilities through Nahel Bonds, rather than sDNA, which in inherited through family. Well, for one fact that we know is that Shallan bonded at a VERY young age, the second is that N Bond changes one's sDNA. Does being bonded makes someone more invested? I don't know. A tear in sDNA, that will be cause by the N bond allows more investiture to flow through you(As I recall, NOT SURE), and does it makes you more invested? Maybe. Regardless, it is not a bad bet that Shallan is more invested than most others(Come'on). As she is a Lightweaver of the Ten Surg-ical (Haha) abilities, she is required to have a better sense in light and its angles, ergo her painting talents; she also has a practical use in stored visual images, as she can utilize them as future illusions, and thus her mnemonic abilities.(Kind of a far stretch, I know, just sit back and savor the theory while you still can). Others, like Shai or Breeze, who are good at understanding someone and manipulate them(their soul/ cognitive), are also possible examples of such effect. However, I will not rule out the factors that we know of, such as traumas or growing environment or simply, training. What I am doing here is merely providing a possible effect of magic on individuals in the Cosmere. Speculations Related to this: Nahel Bond grants extra investiture The more tear in your soul/sDNA the more investiture flowing through you. PS Please would you all be so kind and help me adding the citations I'm bad at doing this kind of stuff but I want to make it more sound even with the possibility that it might be refuted. Mercilessly.

  24. Well, the key would be the definition of HD television. Ours is High Definition. Theirs is Heightening Definition. It accurately portrays the higher Heightenings for those not wealthy enough to attain them.

  26. I think for Jewels to be a drab you'd have to ignore, in my opinion, one of the most emotional parts of the book. When Jewels explains how she felt giving her breath up to an Awakened God. She explains how honored she was to be able to do so and Makes Vivenna question her entire outlook on the religions of Nalthis. I'm not saying this is proof she isn't the Worldhopper, but to me if her background story weren't true it'd really take something away from the book. Also I don't think a Worldhopping Terriswoman would be so unhinged that she'd be into necrophelia. The annotations of Brandon's website says becoming a drab unhinges you and messes with your soul. Still sleeping with a guy after he is dead indicates this level of...is mess-up-ness a word? In conclusion I'd say her background story is true both because it's a big deal in the book as far as Vivenna realizing she shouldn't judge people as quickly as she does, and her mind seems appropriately warped like someone missing a soul. On a side note but still somewhat on subject. Hoid, the most obvious confirmed Worldhopper, doesn't seem to set off any alarms when he gives a story to an Awakened. Is this because he's got breath so he hides how he is different? Is it because Hoid is so old he predates Adonalsium's shattering and therefore has a little bit of each investiture in him? Anyone have any other ideas why he wouldn't seem weird? (my guess is it's because he got breath so doesn't look different anymore.)

  27. Well, I guess we could do this House of Paranoia-style, which Newan missed out on, but that wasn't really fun. On the bright side, we have exactly eleven people, out of which four are Spies. ...I'm going to echo Newan in asking the Guardsmen involved last cycle to step forward. The Spy likely won't, but in the best case, this may let us tentatively boil it down to four out of ten, or three out of nine, depending on whether both Guardsmen step forward. As you can't protect anyone any longer, guys, I think the axhound is pretty much off the leash, as-is. Now, depending on the Messengers approaching Luckat, we (Luckat, at least) may be able to further chop that number down to two out of seven or eight. Not excellent, but still, better than nothing. Edit for colour and to add: Odysa, it'd be appreciated if you stop trolling heavily by now. I can't tell Macen to stop, but I really don't want planning and discussion to be further clogged up by random posts in between. You've had your fun. Now let's get down to business, please.

  32. I apologise for the double-post, but I reckoned that nobody wanted to deal with a super-long post, and since this does shift a little from the intent of my last post...well, better to be safe than sorry, I suppose :/ So: ok guys, maybe we’ve been approaching this wrong by derailing into the Lighteyed Officer. At this point, we think Wilson is the Officer—well, she’s claimed to be one, and we’ve tentatively accepted that claim. My suggestion is that we stick to the plan where Macen plus another Surgeon/Guardsman protects Luckat for this cycle. If the Guardsman winds up injured, we know Macen didn’t do his job and we lynch him next cycle. We simply don’t have the time to process all these claims and still make a good lynch and if we only have one Surgeon, I don’t really want us to play Russian Roulette and try to weed the true/good Surgeon out. We’re not Matrim Cauthon. What about the lynch, then? I suggest (sorry Odysa), that we lynch Odysa. Here are my reasons: Wilson has been continuously insisting that there must be a second Officer hiding amongst <Jost, Alv, and Macen.> But all of them have claimed to not be the Officer. Alv has claimed to simply not be an Officer, Jost has claimed to be a Swordsman, and Macen has claimed to be a Surgeon. Now, if we must lynch a Lighteyes, we could lynch Jost, because based on his claim, we don’t stand that much to lose if we’re wrong. But all that tells us is that either Alv or Macen is the Surgeon, and that either of them is Officer #2. I don’t find that terribly helpful as we’d be forced to face a similar dilemma the next day. But how does lynching Odysa help us? Really, because Odysa is the lynchpin. (Sorry about the pun.) Our assumptions are entirely based on Wilson’s claim that there is a second Lighteyed Officer. And while there’s nothing personal here, I don’t want to risk our Surgeon just to go and figure out who that could be. So what I think Odysa’s lynch lets us achieve is that it lets us rule out scenarios in which we have one Lighteyes Officer, and that is only Wilson. We would then know that Wilson has been lying to us. Consider: as I’ve previously mentioned, if Wilson is telling the truth, then it necessitates that Odysa and Torwel are truthful. But if Wilson is lying, then the only scenarios in which Wilson lies and we only have a single Officer are those scenarios in which Wilson does not actually role-block Odysa but roleblocks Meta and Torwel instead (i.e. the ones where Odysa lies about having been role-blocked. The assumption being that Odysa has no reason to lie if she is Loyal.) Note: there are also more complicated variants where Wilson isn’t actually an Officer but is in contact with one. Nonetheless, this still results in Odysa, Wilson, and that Officer being in cahoots and being Spies. It’s perhaps not as informative as lynching someone in the <Jost, Alv, and Macen> triumverate, but I think it allows us to begin the next round knowing if we’re barking up the wrong tree: brings to mind the tale of the giant who brings down his entire house trying to swat a mosquito. Last, Odysa has avowed herself to be roleless, meaning that should we mislynch, we’re at least not taking out a Guardsman or a Messenger.

  33. Sorry guys, I've been waiting to pull this one since forever. All credit to Awes for this, and to Wilson, who first sent me the P.A.F.O. originals off which this is based.

  34. ...I know this seems to be against what I was advocating, but the more I think of it, well, Macen. Not that my vote can make a difference at this point, anyway. Remember I said I was going back through my notes and the stuff in the previous Cycles? Well. The funny thing is, I can make sense of the way he seems to sometimes be echoing conclusions other people make--that whole slipping in that sweet spot where you seem useful and avoiding suspicion. Because that's kind of what you want to do, whether Spy or Surgeon. Your job's to stay alive so as to save lives because as a protective role, you're really important. Cool. I got that. And then there's this: Macen said this last cycle. And that just strikes me as exceedingly strange for a Surgeon. Sure, the only votes there were Meta's and mine. But these things can change, and we've both previously pulled our votes very late into the cycle. So well, if you are a Surgeon, why in the name of the Stormfather would you ever put a vote on someone you think is likely to be Wit and risk losing your role?! Why in the name of all things sane would you ever think that was a good idea, when you'd been previously savvy enough to stay out of suspicion to avoid having the village lose your role?! A dead Surgeon and a role-less Surgeon are roughly equivalent; the only difference is that a role-less Surgeon is at least one body between us and the Spies. That's what made me change my mind. I can explain Macen's prior behaviour as caution because he knows he's a Surgeon, but then that falls apart--is inconsistent, I should say--in the light of his claim and acknowledgement that I am likely to be the Wit, and blithely stacking on a vote anyway. Edit because quote did not show up in the correct box. Formatting fail.

  36. (Mainly posting here to be accountable so I'll actually write) I want to try a Hanukkah story, not too sure where to go with it. Also it's strange for me in Australia because it's approaching summer, and it never snows, so the whole 'winter holiday time' thing is kinda lost on me. Now can I turn that into a story......?

  37. *Hugs for Twi and Quiver* I don't even know where to start with this last week, it's just been one of those times where it's just one thing after another and you finally feel like you've got some stability again and then something else horrible goes wrong. Well to start with my panic attacks started up again, mines not OCD or anything, I have a couple of minor compulsions but no where near strong enough to be classified as OCD, just stuff like not stepping on cracks in pavement, always putting the volume on an even number but none of them give me that much trouble. I mostly just get social anxiety, put me in a crowd and 3 minutes later you'l find me in a sweaty ball in the corner somewhere. So that' started getting worse, then I had to sift through the 50 or so rejection letters from jobs for the week, which is really disheartening when it's for the 20th week in a row, then I got an email with an actual job offer from an international auction company for helping their ebay sellers, normally I'd be a bit suspicious of something like that but I do a fair bit of eBay selling myslef so I thought it might be worth a try, turns out that was a money laundering scam and I had to go to the police station and they said they couldn't do anything because it's international so that was all horrible. Anyway we ended up just closing all our accounts and making new ones, it was a horrible couple of days but we got through it. Then we got severely underpaid for the last weeks worth of catalogues we delivered, like $100 less than we should have, which we needed for food and then finished up the day with a call from my mum telling me that my grandmother has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and she may not make it to christmas. It has been a horrible week.

Edit2: Constantly draw in stormlight to stay cool in hot weather. (It frosts your skin) Edit3: Use lightweaving to make the illusion of a bench in a park. Then watch people fall down when they try to sit. Create a lifeless goldfish so you never need to replace it. 39. Did we lose the ability to attach pictures to these posts? I click More Reply Options, and it usually has an Attach Files button, but for some reason it's not there anymore. It's still there in some other threads I've tried. Edit: The attachment button is also missing when I click More Reply Options in other threads in this subforum as well. HOW ARE WE GOING TO ATTACH OUR PONIES? Edit 2: Ok, I actually have a question to ask that requires pictures, so I'm doing it the old-fashioned way (that is to say, the overly-complicated way I posted pictures before I figured out about the "Attach Files" button.) What are the northern defenses like? Where did the Fugitives land, and how difficult will it be to infiltrate the city?

  40. My favorite complete story... I would have to say is Mistborn: the Final Empire. It was such a fresh story in the genre that it kind of rocked my world a bit. Even from the outset premise, "what if the hero of prophecy had failed and now the dark lord has reigned for a thousand years...?" was awesome. Then you throw in the cinematic metallic arts and all the great fight sequences, the layers upon layers (there is always another secret) and it has to be my favorite story. Part of that is sentimentality on my part too as it was my introduction to Sanderson. I also really, really enjoyed his two short "hard sci-fi" stories Elysium and Firstborn. Favorite scene that Sanderson has written for me would have to be one each from tWoK and WoR where Kaladin says the 2nd and 3rd Ideals of the Windrunners. Each one sends chills through me every time I read them.

  41. For me, it's mostly that the lighteyes are the narrowest group of suspects. I know there are more spies in the darkeyes, but while I have some suspicions, it's nothing conclusive for anyone. With this, we know that there's an Officer among the spies. It's not you, and it's not me. That leaves 3 people, one of whom I'm inclined to think it's not (Alvron), and one whom I don't think would lie about the role he claimed (Macen). If it's not Joe, I'll turn my attention to the darkeyes, since I don't want to decimate the lighteyes. But for now, Joe's the best idea I've got. Plus, I don't like them having a roleblocking ability, even if it's limited to darkeyes. That's my territory. They need to back off. These darkeyes are in my army (or at least, Dalinar's), and therefore subject to my command. They are not to be commanded by filthy spies loyal to a traitorous highprince.

  43. Wait. Are we seriously going with decimating the Lighteyes just to find who the Officer is? (I grant it's maybe not a big deal if we think about it, since we're not exactly using the Lighteyes vote, but throwing it elsewhere, but I'm starting to get very worried about the direction we're taking.) Also, to all who keep saying "Well, I just thought I should point out you could *possibly* not be the Wit", I have only this to say unto thee: L.A.F.O.

  44. *Insert Office Space Meme* It is a shame that stuff like this can happen, especially with how easy it is to scour the internet and wiki pages with bots that just compile whatever text. Glad to hear that I wasn't unnecessarily wary with this, though. Does this mean you and Team Sanderson get to follow this link up with a Legal Smackdown? Or will you just send in the Kandra to do the dirty work?

  46. So what if the critically acclaimed anime from japan the stormlight archive got made into a live action movie with american actors and an american setting. Like Dragonball Evolution. Maybe kaladin is this guy in high school and dalinar is the principal or something with kaladin being forced to do horrific labour in gym class. eventually szeth who is an assassin from a mob hired by the rich taravangian goes to kill the principal and kaladin protects him. Then aliens known as the voidbringers strike and kaladin and dalinar receive magical powers and fight in a brief war then save earth and kaladin gets the girl of his dreams. Just imagine the horrors of a dragonball evolution version of stormlight after it became an anime? I literally feel sickened and ashamed for writing this by the way.

  48. Er, egregious sarcasm and false equivalency might not be the best way to make your point. Lin Davar, Szeth and Amaram have all commited cold blooded murder. Renarin, as far as we know, has not. In fact, so far, he has not performed any malicious act of any kind. He had problems communicating with his family. Asking folks to consider how an autism spectrum disorder might exacerbate those problems is not unreasonable. Asking people to excuse a vile action like murder because the perpetrator suffer from ASP or a similar condition would be "PCness run amuck", but that is not what I see happening here.
