  1. Quiver asked me to throw together an emblem for The Herd and this was the first thing that came to mind. I'll think of something else when I have the time if that wasn't exactly what you were looking for (which I would completely understand). Smaller version for sigs

  8. The one episode that gets mentioned a lot for new people to try out is Blink from the 10th Doctor; David Tennant, and was written by the current show-runner before he rose to that position. There are two reasons why it is perfect for beginners. The first is that you do not need to know anything about the show to understand it. The Doctor himself only has a few quick scenes and the story is written from the perspective of an ordinary young woman, called Sally, having a very strange day. She is exploring an old abandoned house in London at night when she sees a bit of writing peeking out from behind some peeling wallpaper. As she peels the old paper away she uncovers a message bit by bit which reads - Beware The Weeping Angels Oh, and Duck, No Really Duck Sally Sparrow DUCK NOW! - She ducks just as a rock smashes through the window and flies through where her head was only moments before. When she looks out the window there is no-one around, only a stone statue of an angel covering its eyes. Turning back to the wall she pulls more paper away to see the last of the message 'Love from the Doctor 1969'. The episode follows this character as she works her way through this tense and creepy mystery with no knowledge of who this 'Doctor' is. The second reason is just that it is simply an excellent piece of entertainment from mysterious beginning to paranoia fueled ending. I cannot recommend it enough.

  14. I feel like this is where I may actually be able to be of help! For I suffer from the same exact problem. And honestly, I really think this is the problem that a majority of people who try writing face at first. As horrible as it sounds, I have really found only one possible solution.... and that's just to write. It will be bad at first. You will not like what you put on the page. But don't delete it. Keep going, keep adding to it. Keep thinking about, and be aware of what you don't like about it! So you know what to avoid/watch out for as you keep writing! And I actually have personally yet to actually follow completely through with this advice, but I really think this is the only real solution. Just keep writing until you actually feel comfortable with it. Hope that helps! And Good Luck!

  17. The name "Scadrial" is not mentioned in the books, Brandon told us it in an interview. The name does get mentioned in the Alloy of Law Ars Arcanum though. Same thing with the cosmere, we learned a lot of that information from interviews.

  18. Personally, I wanted to see more of the Aviar. We only got to see two powers in action, and one of them was extremely uncommon. It makes me wonder what the other Aviar can do. Hopefully not the last we see of them, even if it's just a nod in a later book.

  19. A number of things: The Machine: hello there, Allomantic bronze mechanical mistfabrial. Ones Above: hello there, Scadrians. Your "do not intervene in local cultures" has a nice Star Trek feel to it (and probably inspired by Harmony?), tempered by pragmatism. Why can't humans get infested by these neato worms? Parasites granting powers make me think of Silence Divine... I'm a fan of whatever Splinter is/was on this planet being of Conflict, but this is perhaps a subject for a different thread. Language translation machine: pretty much confirmation that the Heralds/Wit have some sort of magical language ability, since it can be replicated via machine. I sincerely doubt the Ones Above have managed to create a hand-held natural language processing device. Since the "dead" One Above was not in fact dead, I'm curious as to what method was used. Feruchemy could very easily make someone cold (by storing heat), atium to look older, pewter to look weak... but I don't know on this one. Once again, we find that Investiture finds its way into infusing the 'distinctive' parts of the landscape (in this case, a neat waterfall at the center of the biggest baddest island). More fuel for the theories on how Investiture supercharges identity. Overall, I enjoyed the story. Not Brandon's nicest work, but the glimpse into the future of the space-faring civilizations makes me want Mistborn 3 all the more.

  20. Scadrians is the first place my mind went, but that's based entirely on the fact that they're the only culture we've ever been told, "they will explicitly have space travel one day" (as far as I know). As for the corpses... I mean, I have one random theory, which is that Dusk made an entirely faulty assumption, which happened to lead him to the correct conclusion. It seems reasonable to assume that the Machine had something to do with Investiture. Perhaps when it was opened, some energy contained inside was released for a brief period of time, and it simply made every Aviar's power go haywire. He was only using two at a time, and he wouldn't have noticed if Kokerlii suddenly made his brain SUPER hidden, so all he saw was Sak's power making him look SUPER destined to die. Dusk saw the visions, and assumed it meant "something that happened has made me universally guaranteed to die" when actually it was just "this is what an Aviar on duralumin looks like". Ironically, the event happened to be universally dangerous in an abstract sort of way, but that's just coincidence. This is, let me re-state, just a huge speculation on my part. It's just something that I think would explain all the "huh?" moments. Even why as morning dawned, all the extra death-visions went away; the side-effects of the pulse finally wore off. Another thought I had; to correct my earlier impression, I guess the lesson of Patji wasn't, "I'm tough to make you stronger," it's "anything that looks too easy is a trap." Which... is an odd lesson, since nothing on Patji was ever "too easy" unless it was a trap set by a human Hunter, so it really wasn't a lesson of Patji itself. Does anyone know, do we have any promises of future books set on First of the Sun? Or could this be all we ever get?

  22. While I agree with both kaellok and EMTrevor that Kaladin had the right to do as he saw fit with the Shards, I can also see where maxal is coming from. Kaladin did leave the Shards on the battlefield and walked away. Is that the same as renouncing the right to the Shards? Amaram thought the Shards were still Kaladin's even after he left them on the battlefield. That, combined with Dalinar's reaction and Amaram's confession makes it fairly clear Amaram wasn't exploiting a loophole in the law, but indeed committed a crime.

  23. Premise Thank youTempus for providing a Good Theory Template. The accepted version of Events is that some person, power or thing Hit Adonalsium, and it Shattered into the 16 Shards of Adonalsium. I doubt this. Hypothesis The Shards were Broken off of Adonalsium One at a Time. Possibly in an attempt to Make Adonalsium a Better Power. Chronology of Known Shards Odium The First Desolation was between 9000 and 100,000 Rosharan Years ago.[1] This translates to about 9900 and 110000 Earth Years.[2] Unfortunately, we don’t have a Timeline for When Odium visited Sel. Honor and Cultivation Honor and Cultivation came To Roshar together,[3] and they were there long before Odium was there. [4] This means that there is a Significant amount of Time Before the First Desolation. Endowment Endowment has only Been actively Returning people on Nalthis for a little over 700 years.[5] Preservation and Ruin The well takes 1024 Years to Refill, and has been filled twice that we know of.[6] Preservation and Ruin came to Scadrial together, and Preservation imprisoned Ruin in the Well as soon as they finished with Creation. Since the second Refilling, there was a 302 year gap.[7] So they’ve been on Planet for 2350 Years. Devotion and Dominion The City of Elantris was created hundreds, if not Thousands of Years before the Events of the book.[8] Shu-Keseg, the Original Religion, was founded after the Splintering of Dominion and Devotion.[9] Unnamed/Unseen Shards The Traveller/Space Shard We have a Word of Brandon that stating that there is a Shard that isn’t on a Planet. This shard isn’t the Shard that wants to Survive.[10] Tempus has talked about this and guessed that a Shard could only Stand being UnInvested for about 500 years, before getting Bored. (Note that His words are taken completely out of Context.)[11] Bavadin’s Shard The Shard of White Sand I can’t really Talk about this Shards activities Without Spoilers for Unpublished Work, so Suffice it to Say, that Bavadin has been on World for at least half of a Millenium. Probably More. The Shard of Survival Well. It’s been Surviving. We can assume that it’s invested in a planet somewhere, due to Brandon’s Comment about the Traveller Shard.[12] The Shardholders It’s possible that not all of the Shardholders were Human, Which means that some of them could have had a Longer lifespan than Normal Humans. They were all from Yolen though. and They all Knew Each Other.[13] Conclusion All the Shards have been active for Different amounts of Times. But if they were all broken off of Adonalsium at the same Time, then they should be Equally Experienced. So they were Shattered at different Times. Conjecture/Speculation Here’s What I think happened. Adonalsium was a Power on Yolen, Rayse, being a Crafty and Dangerous man, figured out how to Shatter Bits of it’s Power. He Broke off the Shard of Odium, took it up, and Left Yolen. The other 15, as well as Hoid, Figured out how he did this, and decided to Replicate it, to Spread out throughout the Cosmere. Aona and Skai both took up Shards, and headed off to Sel. Tanavst, being In love and Honorable, insisted on his Girlfriend/Wife getting one. They left together, and eventually Settled on Roshar. After a While, Odium learns that Others Followed his Lead, and Shatters Dominion and Devotion, then heads to Roshar to do the Same to Honor and Cultivation. He kills Honor, but gets trapped by the Surges and Cultivation. The remaining 16 learned that The Power and Intent of the Shard could Change a Person, So they Gave Ruin to the Nicest Person they could, Ati, and paired him with a Shard that could Balance out his Power. Eventually Endowment Takes up her Shard and heads to Nalthis. The other 8 Shards were also taken up and some point, and they left Yolen as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Possibilities are that Aona and Skai got their Shards, and Adonalsium kept Breaking, leading the Shardholders Forcing Odium on Rayse out of fear of it Deveolping Sentencee or Corrupting a Better man, As Ruin did to Ati. Rayse Blamed this on Devotion and Dominon, and Killed them References

  24. So I was just thinking of the WoB saying that there are ways to boost Allomancy with Feruchemy, similar in effect to compounding. And I thought, " What would happen if you were burning a metal Allomantically and then stored the investure in a nicrosil metal mind?" What I think would happen is you would store the effect and would then be able to boost your allomancy whenever you want. I'm not sure about it, but I really like the idea and it makes sense to me. I apologize that that was poorly phrased but its the best I could write. This might have been brought up before, but I didn't see anything. Well go ahead and gather your axes and machetes from the bin to the left.

  26. Electro laughed as the clerk slumped to the floor, her head rolling on the floor and her neck singed. The woman had tried to stop him from taking food from the store. Who was she to declare him stealing? He had the power, therefore, he declared right and wrong. Most people had realized long ago that resistance against Epics was futile. Some of them, the stupid ones, thought they were being brave when they stood up to an Epic. Those ended up dead, most often. Electro walked outside and glared at anyone who dared glance at him. He Scrambled random people who walked past him. Electro liked to see the humans stop walking, dazed and disoriented, before they finally remembered what they were doing. It was funny to watch them bow to his will, regardless of what they asked him to do. "You there," Electro picked out a random man from the crowd. The man froze, and trembling, looked up to meet Electro's eyes. "Bow to me. Get on the ground and beg me to spare you," Electro commanded. The passerbys glanced at the man and walked a little faster as they passed the scene. The man Electro had chosen slowly dropped to the ground and bowed on his knees to Electro. Laughing, Electro mocked the man, "What, you don't have the guts to challenge me? Wimp." He shot a pulse of electricity out and cut the man's head from his neck. His kneeling body slumped and civilians walked around the body. Electro laughed again and kept on his way, Scrambling people as he walked, and occasionally brushing past people to give them a shock.

  27. Every time I get a book signed, I asked the author to include the most valuable piece of writing advice that they never got, or that they ignored. This is what I currently have: "Sit your butt down and WRITE." - Pat Rothfuss, signed in Wise Man's Fear "If it's not fun, you're doing it wrong." - Cherie Priest, signed in Dreadnaught "The best writers are better revisers." - Brandon Sanderson, signed in Alloy of Law "Try something different! You never know which genre fits your voice." - Gail Carriger, signed in Soulless "Just make sure you're always having fun." - George Mann, signed in Ghosts of Manhattan ...I actually have more, but there were the ones that were easiest to reach.

  28. It's been suggested before, and I don't know that it was ever settled. It's certainly plausible. My personal opinion is more like the other kind of compounding. Basically, we already know that allomantically, you can burn steel and get either steelpushing or, under certain circumstances, physical speed. I suggest that in a steelmind, you can store either physical speed or, under certain circumstances, steelpushes. In other words, if a steel twinborn holds a steel bar while burning steel, I suspect he could store the allomantic steel. He would not, at the time, be able to push on metal or see steellines, but later he could draw on an hour's worth of steel at once, for an effect reminiscent of duralumin. But that's just my two cents.

  29. In general, I would agree with the ending being a bit anticlimactic. I enjoyed reading about the culture and world, and loved that this must be the most modern timeframe we've seen in the Cosmere. Spaceships! But the resolution just kind of happened without the "hero" doing anything particularly. I'll throw in a vote for it being related to the Survival shard. SPECULATION: the entire time I was wondering if Vathi is Khriss doing some Ars Arcanum research on another world. She is described as dark-skinned, and has a very similar personality to what is shown in White Sand. And that's probably all I should really say.

Those who freely leave NC, like BT, are fair game. I don't know in what manner I annoyed you. Did I try to recruit an Observer? Chaos did that, not me. And in RP, the role is a temptress. Swaying people to do things is her thing. I will stop recruiting when Chaos tells me to. Not before. When the opportunity presents itself, I pounce.

  33. There's a theory that Yelig-Nar is following Szeth, which is why he hears the screams. If that's true, Syl might have noticed a large amount of Odium's Investiture. Personally, I'm inclined to think that Odium was following Szeth around. Maybe in order to keep him going and help him kill the Kholins, or maybe just because of Szeth's considerable hatred. It's possible that Odium's influence also was behind Szeth not wanting to believe that the Radiants were back.

  37. Has anyone read the Laws of Magic series? It's set in alternate England, less than a decade before WW1, and the main character is a student of magic. At that time in the world, there have been many discoveries about magic and it is still being studied. If I remember correctly, use of magic was largely based on proficiency in ancient languages, and the antagonist was looking for a uniting language behind everything. I don't remember exactly how - it's been years since I read it - but there was definitely some crossover of magic and tech - they had some kind of magic-driven helicopter, I think, in a world where both tech and magic were being discovered simultaneously. Or something. But the study of magic in itself, and new applications of what was discovered was definitely a large part of the plot. (The main character, before the book begins, accidentally half-kills himself and spends a large amount of time experimenting with new forms of magic to keep his soul inside his body. It's awesome.)

  39. I think you're probably more correct here than we probably think, because mostly we follow the Ars Arcanum which lists it by breath count. The concept of Breath count comes because each person starts with 1 breath, so as people started to give or sell breaths, they would count how many individual breaths had been accumulated into a single person and start associating that with the different Heightenings. It is a very human thing to try and make correlations like that. We know however that each Breath has a different strength, as Vasher says at the end of Warbreaker, it's more the quality of the Breath rather than the quantity. Some breaths are stronger and therefore get you further into a Heightening than other breaths. It kind of makes sense that all Breaths being Investiture of Endowment, when held by one person, would sort of meld together as they are the same type of Investiture. This plays into the false premise that people have that you have to give away all our breaths and not only some of them too. A "Divine Breath" is a single Breath, a splinter of Endowment. In theory this shouldn't be much different than regular breaths. They are all investiture of Endowment. Its not like Kaladin, or another KR, after sucking in Stormlight stores it in discreet parts based on the gem from which it was siphoned. I don't know why Endowment's investiture as Breaths would work differently than Stormlight in that respect. The only niggling question hanging in my mind though is the Return's need to consume "one breath per week". How does the Returned body know what constitutes "one breath" if they're aggregating into a single store? It could be that they need to consume a certain minimum level of investiture to sustain their connection/body and that any breath no matter how weak fulfills this requirement. Then anything over that minimum threshold would be consumed as well... but that still requires the consuming mechanism to be able to tell discreet Breaths from each other. Do Breaths/Investiture have "metadata"? Something that may play into this is the fact that the smoke emitted by Nightblood is per WoB, "corrupted Breaths". So it seems that Nightblood when active in his powers is consuming breaths, perhaps in a similar manner to the Returned body?
