  1. Hey everybody, I've posted another lego gallery, this time featuring part 1 of Words (through the first set of interludes). Minor spoilers, but I made sure not to include any references to anything past that point in the book. The link is https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10204046680875374.1073741833.1474667500&type=1&l=f1ba0bd743 . Many thanks to Peter Ahlstrom for granting permission on behalf of Brandon/Dragonsteel to use copyrighted images from the book's interior. Feedback is welcome.

  2. Hi I'm Nathalie from Germany. After some hesitation I finally decided to join this forum...(tbh I'm to shy for stuff like this but ....this forums seems so cooool O.O and I definitely need to meet more Sanderson-Fans xD ) I don't rly have theories or a hidden art talent or sth like that and I'm still very insecure when it comes to my English-knowledge so I doubt you will see much from me....maybe some small comments...I don't know. Im more the quite Stalker-type The books I've read so far: the Mistborn series, Way of Kings (I haven't read WoR yet because I wanted to wait until they've translated it into german but....February 2015...I doubt I can wait that long xD ) , Alctraz 1, 2 and 3, Steelheart, The Rithmatist (LOOOVE THAT *___*) , Warbreaker, Elantris, The Emperors Soul and Legion

  3. I had this odd thought the other day - Shallan would probably make for a poor antagonist. I just couldn't picture her as one (initially). But my purpose here isn't to say she couldn't be one, but to write an alternative and vaguely plausible history for her to turn her into one... for fun. Just to see what I can come up with. If you like this, please try to come up with your own ideas - bonus points for doing it to your favourite protagonist. The branching point is when Shallan is 15. Her father finds out she's been drawing pictures of things he doesn't approve of and tosses her sketchbook into the fire. Her sketchbook. Her life's work. All gone. Her old memories are fully unlocked and she re-summons Pattern and uses Soulcasting to turn things into fire - the whole house. Everyone dies except Shallan. This time she can't forget. She doesn't want to. But, she has no resources except her brain and her Surgebinding. She doesn't want to die - though she's not particularly attached to life either. She becomes a wandering thief. Sometimes when she has a good amount of money she will sketch and research natural history for a week or two. It doesn't bring her the joy it once did. She catches the eye of a professional thief called Tyn, who spots her potential. Shallan is grateful for the ability to learn properly and progresses at an incredible rate, subtly augmented with some sneaky Surgebinding. Half a year later, Tyn is feeling proud of her apprentice but also nervous - she's running out of things to teach Shallan, who is becoming increasingly confident and self-assured. Shallan never spots this but Tyn feels threatened. Tyn decides to take upon a high-risk mission to assassinate Jasnah Kholin, sending Shallan on what she hopes to be a suicide mission. However, it's Tyn who dies instead - and Shallan blames Jasnah. While Shallan respected Tyn, she was not especially loyal. For fun, she decides to lightly harass Jasnah instead. Nothing minor, or so she thought - writing graffiti on books Jasnah was planning to read, going through Jasnah's notes and using her Soulcasting to subtly (or sometimes blatantly) edit the words. Shallan is having fun... until one day she happens to hear Jasnah muttering in a dead tone all the things she plans to do when she captures the miscreant. Shallan leaves the area in a rush and spends a year or two wandering around. Sometimes she feels in the mood to create works of art - she makes a small name for herself as a young, eccentric but gifted artist. One of her creations, a bowl of highly realistic but completely fake fruit ends up all the way in Azir and happens to end up in the hands of Lift, who is frustrated that she can't eat them. Shallan does turn to theft when she doesn't feel in the mood for art. One day, Shallan happens across a slave auction, and feeling a bit flush with cash and in a whimsical mood decides to buy an interesting looking slave. At first, she acts like a proper lighteyed lady around him - makes him carry her when she's "too tired", lightly teases him, giggling at his reactions but isn't actively mean. A few days later he runs away. Incensed, Shallan tracks him down (with some help from Pattern) and now the gloves are off. With her summoned Shadeblade, Shallan makes it crystal clear just what he might lose if he ever disobeys her. Now, Shallan teases and plays pranks on him constantly - and also forces him to come help her with thefts. After a couple of occasions being chased by guards, his face ends up on wanted posters. This doesn't stop Shallan from using him though as she just weaves a disguise on him. One day, Shallan decides to rent him out as a model for some lighteyed women to sketch - a nude model. Shortly after that, Kaladin uses his medical knowledge to fake his own death to escape Shallan. He runs away to Alethkar, where he founds an underground resistance movement against lighteyed rule, taking over the capital when the queen starts a riot. Shallan makes her way to the Shattered Plains - she decided she wants to sketch a chasamfiend. She spends a few months there before she gets a chance and during that time she finds an easy target in Adolin - after he dumps her the first time, she creates a new persona with a new look and dates him all over again. And again. She does this 10 times in a row without him ever catching on and decides to turn the tables by revealing what she did and dumping him. His pride and "reputation" in ruins, Adolin becomes an ardent and vows never to speak with women again. Shallan finally gets to go on a hunt for a chasamfiend, among the king's party. Unfortunately for her, she's right where it appears after the baiting goes wrong. Her last words are "what a magnificent beast..." -- The end -- Thanks for reading. Hope it was some lighthearted fun - I'm not really into grimdark alternatives or making protagonists go all evil.

  6. So, if you look at my tagline/signature, you will see that I have a progress report meter detailing where I currently am in my current project. And if you read the words there you will see that I am in the process of writing the first manuscript. I'm currently a few thousands words in and have been for about a month now. But school is finally over and I will have a good deal of time on my hands over the summer and so I plan to throw myself over the cliff and begin writing in earnest, with the goal of having a first draft completed by August 14th, the day before I return to school. I have a plan for how I will go about achieving this. I know myself and how I work, and so I know that I need to enforce a routine on myself. I have already spent a few months outlining the plot and building the world and magic system. I will spend at least 1 hour every day writing, but I am shooting for 2-3 hours per day, with the exception of weekends. Basically, I will pretend to be a "professional" writer to some extent. Now you're all probably asking yourselves, "Great, but why is this on here?" And my answer is that I need some more motivation than internal motivation. So, I hope that at least one person will remember to hold me to my promise and occasionally ask me where I am in the novel. And should I not finish I would expect that someone would make a suitable amount of fun of me. tl;dr: I plan to write a first draft over the summer and I want to tell people so I feel a desire to please my peers and finish. Peer pressure can be manipulated for good!

  7. We previously reported that there would be a new edition of Mistborn coming in May, and it came out last week. It's a trade paperback size, and this time it's marketed towards teens. The actual text is exactly the same (save for a few mistakes that were finally fixed), but has new maps. I snagged it today, so let's take a look. First, the trade paperback size is wonderful. It's just more comfortable to hold. The text is bigger than the smaller, mass market paperback--which makes sense, considering it is marketed to teens. The cover, which has previously been the cover for the entire trilogy of ebooks, is as beautiful as it has always been, and the title and author text is lightly embossed. It's really nice to hold, and any day of the week, I'd rather hold this one than the paperback. The text on the back features the prologue epigraph, and the plot summary on the back is almost identical to the mass market paperback, but doesn't mention Allomancy, instead focusing solely on Vin. It ends with the new line, "Where a hero rose to save the world and failed, can a young heroine succeed?" This, with the Vin-centric cover, is the marketing towards teens, and I hope it works. Inside, there's a section for "Tor Teen Books by Brandon Sanderson," which in addition to Mistborn and The Rithmatist, have The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages listed as upcoming. It took me a moment to realize they are referring to the trade paperback rereleases of them, because obviously those books are already out. I'm kind of dumb sometimes. The symbols on the chapter headers and part headers are exactly the same as the normal Mistborn version, so it doesn't use the base sixteen numbering system that was in Alloy of Law--if you never noticed, the symbols in this book just go up to 23, then repeat again, where Alloy uses the actual numbering system in-world. But what is new? Let's look at the maps. As you can see, the map of the Final Empire is almost identical, but now it is full page, with no borders. The background of it is no longer white, but a nice texture that makes it feel more ashy. Very cool, but it's not "new" per se. As it turns out, the Luthadel map is the new one: Why, it's in the exact same style as the map of Elendel in The Alloy of Law. Instead of there being a legend for the points of interest, they are marked as X's on the map itself. It also features that same ashy texture. The borderless map is really dang cool, too. So, if it looks like Alloy's map, does it have that mysterious text from Nazh? Yep. If you can't see, it says "Since you insisted on having an updated version, here is the new one. I am not going back a third time. - Nazh". I am in awe. That is freaking hilarious. (Also, someone should tell Nazh that Well of Ascension's Luthadel map has different points of interests in it.) For those of you who don't know, Nazh's writings have appeared in Alloy of Law and Words of Radiance. Presumably, he's collecting all these maps for the writer of the Ars Arcanums for all the cosmere books, which are all the same person. Solely for the hilarity and awesomeness of the Luthadel map, this is worth a purchase, but the size makes it awesome all by itself. Dang it, Brandon. I already have too many copies of this book and now I'm going to buy this one, as well as the re-released Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages, which could also have Nazh quotes? Lord Ruler, man.

  9. I just went through the previous writeups to get more information about what the Ghostbloods have been up to. Mailliw has admitted in the past to putting clues in the writeups (see the reference to the rope in a pocket and to silk on a sword after nights 1 and 2), although some of it could just be RP. I wanted to see if I could match up different descriptions to the same Ghostblood to get a better idea of their numbers and assets. I have isolated five different Ghostbloods in the writeups (although it is possible that two are actually the same so there’s only four): 1. The first Ghostblood was referred to as a “man in Shardplate” in the opening writeup. He climbed a rope to get in to kill the king. On night 2, there was an assassin with a blood-stained sword with fine silk stuck to it who killed Pailan. From the discussion that followed, it seems this assassin was the same one that killed the king (the silk was the clue). On night 3, there was a “murderer with the bloody sword” who, IIRC, has thoughts that imply that he was the one who killed the king. This implies that the person who killed Fnorf and took his shardblade is the same person as the king-killer On night 4, someone with a shardblade attacked Wurum--certainly the same person who killed Fnorf. This Ghostblood likely killed the king, Pailan, and Fnorf and attempted to kill Wurum. He probably started with Shardplate, and has since gained either an emotion bracelet or a reverser (or both, but the writeup seemed to imply that Pailan had an heir) and a Shardblade. If he still has the Shardplate, then he is a full shardbearer. However, it is possible he gave it to Ghostblood #4 at some point, or even that the first mention of Shardplate didn't mean anything, since it hasn’t been mentioned on him since and I doubt the Ghostbloods have two Shardplates. 2. On night 1, someone attacked Tion. He had a rope in his pocket, which from the following discussion meant that he was the Ghostblood who took the rope during the assassination of the king. There is no indication of what this Ghostblood has. 3. Night 4 opens with a man who pretended to be Deren (who let the man with Shardplate up). He is the person who used a painrial to protect rope-man (Ghostblood #4). This Ghostblood has a painrial. 4. Rope-man is a (possibly) new figure in the writeups in night 4. He has rope about his neck. It is also possible that he is actually Ghostblood #2, who had the rope in his pocket. If he is Ghostblood #2, then there are only 4 Ghostbloods mentioned explicitly in the writeups so far, and given how Ghostblood #5’s attack is phrased, it seems like that is all there would be. During night 4, this person has “new Shardplate”, which could mean that he just got it (although Wurum’s plate wasn’t called “new”, and he had just received his, apparently). He tried to use a Fabrial on someone, so he has some kind of Fabrial that targets people at night (I think that means Pain Knife, Soulcaster, Painrial, or Emotion Bracelet). He was attacked by the Grandbow holder and protected by a painrial holder (Ghostblood #3). This Ghostblood has Shardplate and some kind of Fabrial that targets people. 5. A new assassin killed Jost. It appears that he had done little before that for the Ghostbloods, at least in terms of actions. I worry that this is an indication that the other Ghostbloods now have too many items so they needed their fifth member to attack for the first time. He thinks, “The others had had their chance to help, now it was his,” so I don’t think there are any more Ghostbloods beyond those mentioned. This Ghostblood now has a Spanreed, Soulcaster, or half-shard (or all three if Jost didn’t have an heir) in addition to whatever he started with. Note: If how I have lined up the Ghostbloods is correct, then every one of them has been referred to as male at least once in the writeups. I don’t know if this actually means anything though. Altogether, the Ghostbloods at least have a Shardblade, an Emotion Bracelet or Reverser (Awes mentioned they had an emotion bracelet, so it is probably that), a Painrial, one (or maybe two) sets of Shardplate, some kind of Fabrial that can be used on someone, and whatever was taken from Jost. In addition, I would guess that there are a few other items they started with plus whatever else has been heired or given to one of them. Given what has already been said, Ghostblood #4 is Awes, and is the only one that has been identified. Unfortunately, he apparently also has Shardplate, so we can’t kill him in a lynch today. However, if we lynch him today, his plate will be damaged so Wurum can take him out tonight. Why would it be better to take Awes down a notch during the next night and wait to lynch him until tomorrow and hope that whoever we lynch today just happens to be a Ghostblood than to take him down a notch by lynching him today then kill him tomorrow so that we can maybe take one of his items from him and wait to lynch someone else until the next day when we have more information from the next night? I think gunning for someone else right now just spreads out the votes too much and lets the Ghostbloods hide in the votes.

  10. I've found the recent faction fad an entertaining read but can I request that we not blast new members to the forum with requests to join this faction or that faction? There are a lot of people that will be put off by that kind of introduction to the site. If they are really into participating on the forum, I'm sure they'll come across the various factions on their own.

  11. Here's my advice to you Khryindor, if you get obsessed with an idea, you should try writing it! Trust me, you're going to be able to do a much better job with your own idea than I am. For one thing, I am... not terribly metalic arts savvy and I am kind of only vaguely understanding what all is going on in that idea. I don't really understand tricky magic system stuff very well. I tend to leave the heavy realmatics and "game breaking combo" things to people who are much better at understanding those. For another thing, I usually don't take requests for a reason: I'm not good at writing other people's ideas. When I write fanfics it's because an idea has hooked me, it's sunk its claws into my brain and I just keep thinking of more and more things and it won't leave me alone until I put them down on paper. Now, occasionally, someone will say something around me that sparks an idea, but it's often more of my ideas than the original spark. The one time I had written a direct request was because I signed up for a secret santa gift exchange and got a very specific prompt: Thor and Loki visit Scadrial. Now, those are two fandoms that I care about a lot but try as I might I couldn't come up with fun situations that really intrigued me. I mean, I tried really hard to live up to what the requester wanted, but I still think it's one of my weaker pieces and it's for that reason that I don't do direct requests pretty much ever. And, on top of that, I also have a lot of my own projects that I'm working on. I'm currently working on a Stormlight fic that's stretching longer and longer as I keep having more ideas for it. Currently it's mapped out at four acts with an interlude, and I've just finished the rough draft of act one. I've also got tons of small stories I've been cranking out for my original story Called Forth that I'm working on. And editing Splintercast. And transcribing Scroungers. And there's that Renarin wine tasting fic I could do, or some bickery Kadolin, or perhaps the Vin and Elend reincarnation fic that I've had an idea forever, or perhaps the sequel to The Fangirl: Weaponized that people keep begging me for and that I started plotting for... Yeah... basically I have so many ideas that I'm already committed to and invested in plus the fact that I don't understand your idea as well as you means that any fic I even tried to write of it would be really terrible because I wouldn't know how to write it. I wouldn't even know where to start. Which is why I usually don't write requests pretty much ever. If you really like this idea, seriously you should try writing it! For one thing, the cosmere fandom needs more fic writers, and on the other hand, you know exactly what you want from this idea! It'd be good practice! Even if you've never written fanfic or any kind of writing before, I'd really encourage you to give it a go!

  14. "Bold words. I will still see you hang, Awes and I will enjoy it," Tion glared at the outspoken Ghostblood. "And once we are done with you, we will do the same to your friends." He stood to address the crowd. "Most of you likely hate me. I don't blame you. Rest assured, I return the feeling.' 'But I am not your enemy today. I was never your enemy. This division is exactly how they were capable of bringing us this low, but we are Alethi, are we not? We will not just stand idly by and allow ourselves to be beaten. No, we are a proud people and we will fight! We have survived far worse and we will not go silently! From the lowliest thief, to the Heralds themselves, we do not give in! To Victory!" I swear, if you people don't come back and upvote this once you realize I'm innocent, I will hunt you down! : P

  15. super long pretentious title because I can FTW!!! Okay so I remember reading some people taking this quote: and saying that because it started as "little vines" the spren that makes up Adolin's Shardblade has to be an Edgedancer spren or closely related to it. That logic never really sat right with me (though admittedly I am biased against it because of some of my minor theories). Flashforward to my reread of the Mistborn series, and I come across this (emphasis mine): Now personally I think the use of "vine" in both cases is mostly a descriptive coincidence, but it did get me thinking about the similarities between the mists/lerasium and the summoning-fog/shardblade relationships. The former are directly described as being the "body" (i.e. physical aspect) of Preservation. Could the same be true of the latter as well? I'm inclined to say yes, they are the "bodies" of spren which are themselves Splinters. Anyway, I don't really know what I wanted to say but I figured I should share...

  19. Announcement: Some of you have noticed the hidden text I've put in the writeups. I'll be doing something similar to what Claincy did last game and I have prizes. The clues have a simpler meaning and a deeper/double one. For the first three people to guess the simpler one, they will receive the minor prize. The first player to discover the deeper meaning will receive a bigger one. You are eligible for both. These items could help your side greatly. And, Claincy already figured out the simpler meaning the day he died, but was too dead to claim the prize. Edit: The first person has already come forward and claimed their minor prize from their Highprince for excellency in codebreaking! Edit 2: Updated player list: Player List 1: Jost (TheOnlyJoe): Ex Soldier who lost a Shardblade. Dead. 2: Xanas (18th Shard): Diplomat to King Taravangian Dead. 3: Tors (Tulir): slightly confused ardent Dead. 4: Sprenil(Aspren): Stormwarden turned Hatham's ward 5: Awes(Awesomeness Summoned): Sebarial's Ryshadium groom with dreams of being Wit. 6: Alv (Alvron): scarred cousin of Roion 7: Brightlord Faialen (AonarFaileas): musician and scion of House RutharDead. 8: Ace(Macen): TBD 9: Wurm (Wyrmhero): only remaining son of poor House Heron 10: Tion (Metacognition): snarky and sadistic brightlord 11: Humperdink (the Gleeman): ridiculously hopeful huntsman 12: Grellin Pilgras (GreyPilgrim): likes walking Dead. 13: Jain (Lightsworn Panda): Shin who is a bit on the crazy side. 22. No, that was someone else with all the gods, mine focuses on 3 characters from the same village who witness a horrifying event and have wildly different reactions. The magic system is based on nature and comes from a user's ability to meld mentally with nature around them. The converse (don't wanna say evil) magic system is based on pain and uses technology to focus and enhance the nature magic because the nature magic all but disappeared many years ago...until now at least. The setting is a classical greece inspired world, but with steam punk elements

  23. I don't consider it anything special. The lullaby was composed by Brandon's stepfather, if I recall correctly, which alone should be enough to make it less plot-significant. It is contained within Shallan's flashback chapters, offering both an introduction and a conclusion, so I am even more inclined to believe it has no meaning outside of them. Plus, given Roshar's nature, words like "rock," "chasm," and "crystal" are likely to show up in culture.

  26. The fact that someone was targeted by the bow and protected from harm by a painrial last night means the cat is out of the bag so there's no point in hiding what I am anymore. In fact, I'd prefer to lay a few cards on the table before Macen starts trying to scramble through pm's today in an attempt to recover from yet another setback (and likely failing once again). Awes looked around the room and found mostly shock and confusion. Yet another noble dead and at this point only a few in here really knew what happened. He turned his gaze to Ace and found the man staring back at him with barely controlled rage. Ace knew now that he'd been played this whole time. Awes was amazed the man hadn't yet tried to cross the room and rip out his throat with his bare hands. He must still be trying to settle things through some elaborate plan which was bound to fail. Awes shrugged off the murderous glare then turned to address the whole gathering. He had plans of his own to set in motion. "To the thief, I know who you are (Our bracelet saw you steal an item last night). We would like to make a formal offer. As has been stated a few times, things aren't looking too good for the nobles. Even identifying me, and even if they finally manage to lynch one of us today, we've still got a pretty significant advantage with the items we have accrued. There's a chance they can pull it out but it will rely on quite a bit of luck which has thus far been lacking on their side." "So, the offer is to join us and help us finish this thing off sooner rather than later. You have to admit, the nobles haven't shown you all that much love and have called for your lynching a couple times based on pretty shacky arguments. Join with us and you'll see what a true brotherhood is like and you can share in the victory with us. All that we ask is that tonight you steel the bow. Wurum has it. Consider it your initiation. We look forward to welcoming you among us." Edit: grammar

  29. it's worth pointing out that there are some pretty creepy and disturbing lullabies in the real world. "Rock a bye baby, on the tree top", "Alouette", and one about dying in your sleep spring to mind off the top of my head. The Shattered plains were discovered and explored by the Alethi beginning 15 years ago, but that doesn't mean that they were totally unknown or unheard of before that. The song might be a hint of lore about the shattered plains working its way into some sort of mainstream culture or possibly be a result of Odium's influence on Lin, which would certainly be an intriguing possibility. Or perhaps they refer to some other chasm entirely. After all, it's doubtful that they're exclusive to the shattered plains. I don't think you should read too much into the mention of darkness, rock. or storms in the original song (where they are not capitalised). Most lullabies reference darkness or night in one form or another, and rocks and storms are pretty much universal experiences on Roshar. I would assume crystals refers to gemstones, which ties back into the storm infusing the stones with light while the wind rocks the baby's basket. Edit: We have actually seen chasms in other places, during Kaladin's dream sequence riding on the winds, he flies over a city that's basically built into the walls of chasms.

  32. So I thought it might be fun for everyone who's already read through the series to see what I think might come to pass after reading the Eye of the World for the first time. I know I enjoy hearing what people think about books and series as they are going through them. First, I want to say that I'm very frustrated, as I had a lot of theories coming through the book that were pretty much confirmed by the end. For instance the Lan/Nynaeve relationship budding, Rand being the dragon reborn, Thom Merrilin not being dead, Rand using the one power. (I caught that after learning about the symptoms from touching the one power, putting that together with the scene in Baerlon, when he got lightheaded talking to the Children of the Light.) I had assumed that Moiraine was the missing queen from Camelyn, but the end chapter for her paints a different story. So, with a greatly reduced list, here I go: Rand and Perrin will continue to credit each other on being the better ladies man, and eventually Matt will end up better with women than both of them. *Thom has been gentled, which is part of his distrust towards the Aes Sedai. *The inkeeper at the Queen's Blessing is Thom's brother, and it was his son who ran afoul of the Aes Sedai. *I'm guessing that his nephew heard from Thom what Gentling was like, He tried to resist forcing the Aes Sedai to kill him. Perrin and Egwene, (I'm trying to keep myself from getting attached to these two as a couple, after the travesty my hopes came to in Harry Potter.) Padan Fain will have a huge redemption arc. Maybe even last second. He seems to be the Gollum equivalent. Rand and Elayne. A daughter heir gets what she wants. Loial will grow into a very powerful magic user through his tree songs. I was very much struck by the power he commanded at the end of the book when he preserves the Green Man's grave. The Green Man mentioned how hard it was to keep the blight out, so what Loial did had to be some pretty powerful stuff. Loial will eventually reclaim the ways from the black wind. Again, he seems a lot more powerful to me than he gives himself credit for. Moiraine also struck me as way more powerful than she should be. I'm not saying as an Aes Sedai wielding the one power, but on a whole different level. She's wielding the three Ta'veren to basically weave the pattern herself. The Green Man was very surprised to see her twice, but she knew without a doubt that she could find him again. So she basically broke the known laws of magic, and had no doubts that it would happen that way. Lan will never develop a sense of humor. Waylaid kings take themselves way too seriously. Logain is Rand's biological father. Most of Nynaeve's animosity towards Moiraine, at least towards the end of the book, is jealousy because of her relationship with Lan. *Thom has been captured by the Dark One, but will eventually escape on his own, because he's just that awesome. (Seriously was disappointed he didn't appear again in this book. I thought Thom was the most interesting character. Being a court bard for a queen involved with Aes Sedai can only explain so much about his knowledge.) The Children of the Light may have members whose intentions are pure, but the command structure has been completely tainted by Darkfriends. *Mat's dagger will actually become an asset. He'll learn some sort of control over it, which he can then teach to Rand to stop him from going mad due to the taint on the one power. So, in conlcusion, I thought it was a great read. At first it struck me as a Lord of the Rings clone, but the elements already have diverted enough that I barely notice it, and I'm excited to see where it goes from here. I did choose to post this where I know spoilers could leak in, so I won't hold it against you if they are posted on this thread, but bear in mind I will still be reading through. I'm just starting up the Great Hunt today. Hopefully my thoughts give you guys a kick.

  33. Okay, so here's the new list then. I took down both Allomantic zinc and Allomantic brass. It seems unlikely to me they'd do one and not the other. So to compensate, I doubled up both Allomantic pewter and Allomantic tin. I fear I'm creating too mucn of a monster here though, with compounding AND doubled up spikes. If this is right, then you really had best not grapple with Marsh, because he will tear you limb from limb like others snap twigs. And best not to get within a mile of him, because he will sense you.

  34. Okay, now to amend this for Marsh. I'm pretty sure he's got Allomantic steel/Allomantic iron doubled. Even if they're savants, they still have weaker powers from hemalurgic decay, so extra power there helps a ton. Besides, I thought this was confirmed in the books?Feruchemical tin is a decently likely choice for a spike. It's better than Allomantic tin in several ways– there's total control over how fast you use it up, you can have insanely massive power stores in metalminds, and you can select each sense you want individually– no wasting energy enhancing nonexistent sight. Compounding makes it even better. But you might not even really need Allomantic tin, since Feruchemical tin is better in all aspects except having to store. And storing is less painful for an Inquisitor, as their steely eyes should be unaffected. Doubling up Allomantic brass and Allomantic zinc are just guesses, really. Super-powered mind control is great for paralyzing your enemies while you stab them to death. Allomantic duralumin can do the same, but you're left vulnerable. An Inq without metals is completely blind. With all these, the total is 21. If the number is more than that, they'll probably start with doubling up Allomantic pewter. All that's left after that are any human physical traits, which tend to distort, so he likely has very few – one for strength and one for intelligence at most, probably. So that sets the max at 24, min at 21.

  38. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough. Lines of Warding only work for one night, so the chalklings get more dangerous as the game goes on. However, I can see your point about them getting too strong late game. What if the max power of the chalklings was equal to the number of Forgotten? So, if the game starts with twenty people, and four are Forgotten, the chalklings power would be from 0 to 4. That would make them really weak at the beginning (as they should be, since the characters are part of the military), but as the game progresses, they start to get more dangerous. However, they won't get out of hand if people start killing bad guys. Would that work better?

  40. You gotta have a horrible first draft before you can have an awesome story. So the more you work on that draft, the quicker you get to a) the fun stuff of writing and b.) making awesome story. What also just occured to me, try imagine reader reactions as they read each scene and are overwhelmed by the sheer breathtaking amazingness of what your story will be. Because one of the best things is when you show someone something you've written and they get all excited about it. And imagining that will maybe get you excited to keep going! Also....so I'm a hypocrite and I'm really bad at this one. But write regularly. The story then kind of invades your brain and forces your to write it, but if you leave it for too long you get apathetic and that's when it sits on a shelf for months. That's it. You're out of excuses. Now go write. Which I totally didn't shamelessly rip off anywhere we might possibly know about.....

  46. Thanks for the extra info! You've got a lot of things that I made note of (but couldn't figure out how to include in the initial post) but you've also given me some extras I hadn't considered and/or noticed. Especially the items from Elantris as it's been a while since I've read that. The Kindle search function can only take you so far! I've thought about the musicality in terms of the waves of Investiture (I'll definitely need to read the wiki you linked) being a "melody" over the top of the inherent rhythm of the Cosmere, essentially make a song. I'm a guitarist on the side and the idea that the fundamentals of the Cosmere could be music an idea the captivated me. I should also note that I'm thinking of this along the lines of string theory in physics, which was/is thought to be the unified theory of physics. That has vibrating strings and I thought it wasn't totally out of the question that the unified theory of magic could be along those same lines.

  48. I took a second look at this. The smile is a lie. If you look closely, you can see the bead of sweat from frustration on her head. Her eyes are downcast and hopeful, yet full of doubt. Her hands are clasped imploring the stick to change. And then there's the smile itself. It's wavering with the doubtful optimism of someone who has run out of options. Even as she sits, Shallan is lying to herself, telling herself she's happy, that it doesn't matter that she cannot hope to budge the stick. Meanwhile, Pattern stands tall and proud, drinking in the delicious lie Shallan is obviously repeating to herself to keep calm. The artist who created this has captured Shallan, Truly captured the moment, even more so than first glance can reveal. The subtly is incredible. Well done, this is truly a masterful work.
