  1. Alright, as requested I made a logo for you guys, as well as some banner length variations. In addition, I've linked my Photoshop file at the full size (800x1600) so you can make your own stuff similar to how Awesomeness does the profile pics (apply neat filters and textures to the vectors, etc). The feather wings are based on the 'freedom' glyph used in Kaladin's brand. Enjoy! I'm not joining, though. Feathertips Featherblades, spears, and ... farmers?

  3. The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher: Riots of Kholinar Welcome to the Riots of Kholinar, where Words of Radiance spoilers will run amok (this is the only warning, if you haven’t read it yet, and are sensitive to spoilers). This Quick Fix will run with some slightly different rules than Tempus’ did. For one, we need a bare minimum of 18 players in order to fill all the roles we need to start the game balanced (the game was designed for 27+, with a minimum of 18). Second, it will run longer than a week, but not more than three. The period duration will be 48 hours (excepting day one, which will be 24, with no voted killing, or death related class actions), with only day cycles, as nights are unnecessary by design in this game. If there is a tie in votes for death, there will be no death that cycle. The rollover time will be 12PM MDT, or 7PM GMT. Lastly, inactivity will be dealt with swiftly, as it slows down games, and that’s just dumb. If you’ve gone 48 hours without a post without announcing your absence beforehand, or if you announce your absence but don’t post for 96 hours, your character will be presumed to have been caught in a highstorm and added to the list of the dead. Don’t get caught in the highstorm. Stay active. And now, without any further ado, let me explain the game. You’re living in Kholinar. Which would be awesome, but riots have overtaken the city, and you’ve begun to suspect that you aren’t going to survive. Three factions have come together, fighting the others for their own survival, by killing and eliminating the others. These factions are the Noblemen, the Merchants, and the Darkeyes. There is, however, a hidden fourth faction, the Seventeenth Shard, that has infiltrated each of these groups and is trying to keep themselves alive by relaying information to the other factions. To help you in your quest, you may leave the city, forfeiting all actions for that cycle, and travel the great distance to the Nightwatcher. There, you can offer up a prayer, asking for anything you want. If the Nightwatcher likes your prayer, she will grant your request in the form of a boon, but beware, for she will also give you a curse of equal greatness to your boon. The Nightwatcher is not obligated to answer all prayers in a night (though she may), but she will answer at least one. If you want to have a chance that your prayer will be granted, make it good. We hear that the Nightwatcher makes decisions based on hilarity and awesomeness. To make things a little more interesting, you’ll also have to worry about Highstorms. Every couple cycles, a highstorm will pass through. Fortunately, there’s a pretty good stormwarden left in Kholinar, so you’ll usually know when the highstorm is going to hit. The thread will be locked during the highstorm, but you can still participate in docs with the other players on your team (because you’re sitting through the highstorm with your compatriots, of course), but you can’t send any action PM’s to the GM. This includes votes, class actions (to be explained below), and prayers to the Nightwatcher (Yes, you’ll be voting through PM. What you say in the thread is up to you). The Roles Everyone will be able to do some action, depending on the role they are given at the start of the game. Some roles are exclusive to a faction, but most of the roles are in each faction. The Steward of Kholinar is the Noblemen exclusive role. He is immune to all role-based effects that could kill him, including objects acquired from the Nightwatcher. He can be killed by lynching or direct action by the Nightwatcher (likely due to the effects of a curse). The Apothecary is the Merchant exclusive role. She has the ability to protect her entire team once per game, for an entire cycle. She also has the ability to kill someone once per game. Poison, anyone? The Freed Bridgeman is the Darkeyes exclusive role. All that time running bridges has made him strong. Because of this, he can die twice. His vote also counts as double for lynching--after all, it’s a riot, and he’s the strongest man in the city. The Seventeenth Sharder is, obviously, exclusive to the Seventeeth Shard. All members of this faction have this role. Besides being loyal to the Seventeenth Shard, they are loyal to one of the other factions. They have also infiltrated a separate faction and are feeding the information and plans from that faction across enemy lines, to the faction they are loyal to (and probably the Seventeenth Shard as well). Each member has the ability to win as either the Seventeenth Shard or the faction they are loyal to. Members of the Seventeenth Shard can survive their first death, but after surviving they are spooked and lose their ability to spy on the other team. They cannot betray the other members of the Seventeenth Shard (like telling the faction they’re loyal to who the traitors in their group are). If they do, they die permanently (whether or not they have been spooked). The Voidbringer is the Seeker-type role. Once per cycle, they can choose a player and find out which faction that player is part of. If enough players join, there will be two types of Voidbringers on each team. One is a true Voidbringer. The other only thinks they are the Voidbringer. The Voidbringers will not know if they are real or fake. The fake Voidbringer will see others as random, or what they expect (if they choose someone on their own team). If the fake Voidbringer searches someone twice, they will see the same answer each time. If the true Voidbringer chooses a member of the Seventeenth Shard, the result will not be “Seventeenth Shard;” instead, it will be the faction the member is loyal to. Lastly, when a Voidbringer is killed, they will have one extra day to live (but they will know death is knocking). It’s advised they use that day to pass any information gleaned on to a trusted source. The Ghostblood can choose one person each cycle to kill. The Ardent can choose one person each cycle to guard. If that person is attacked by a role, the Ardent protects them. He also has the ability to die in place of another person for the lynchings. The Worldsinger can change another player’s vote each day. They also have the ability to silence a player’s vote and action each day. This role will only be included if there are enough players. The Shamed Member of Gavilar’s Guard has the ability to kill someone else when he dies. He can also rabble rouse and demand an extra player be lynched once per game. Both abilities can be used on the same cycle. (Because you can die from things other than lynchings but you won’t know that you died until day actions are complete, it would be smart for the guard to send in a PM each day of who they would like to die along with them if they die that day. If they don’t, no one will die. If you want to save the rabble rousing ability for the day you die, simply clarify that in a PM to the GM each day, with “If I die, then I want [this person] lynched as well.”). This role will only be included if there are enough players. The Dead have the ability to send a Ghost “Tweet” each day. This will be included in the write-up and will be led by the first player to die. The dead can decide what each 140-character message will contain in the dead doc. Signups will go until we have 18 people, or 10 days, whichever comes second. Naturally, in your signup post, please don’t include a profession, race, or anything that would shoehorn you into or out of a role. Personality and gender are fine, but outside of that, please be cautious of how you build your character. If we have 28+ players, there will be people who don't have roles. Lastly, this game will rely heavily on private google docs (mostly so the spooked Seventeenth Sharders can’t continue spying), so you will either need a google account, or to create one for this game. Immediately after you post joining, PM me the email address that you’d like to use, and I’ll get you added to the lists. 10. So....this means that Tulir is going to be a Noble then, right? I mean, look at his rep. It always speaks the truth. And I truly wish I could sign up for this game. However, I will be watching. And moderating (not that it's likely to need much in the way of moderation, but we'll see). So. I'm jealous of all of you. Because this looks like it will be a blast. Edit: Let's keep OOC stuff in blue, plzkthx

  19. A warm desert wind howls through the hall, coalesceing into a darkness in the middle of the court. The shadows unfold like an enormous pair of wings, revealing a figure clad in black and teal, blonde hair pinned back, and a devious smile upon her face. She turns in a slow circle, regarding the other members in the room with a calm collectedness. "Look at all of the fun events I miss while I'm not paying attention," she says. She turns back to the throne, sweeping an elaborate curtsy, though whether the gesture is sincere or mocking, it's difficult to tell. "Good evening, your majesty. I hope that my followers have not been causing you too much trouble. I was unware of their activities here, as it seems they did not remember to inform me of this excursion." She spares a glance for the amassed Featherblades. "I do not give them orders, nor do I claim leadership over them. Their services to me are entirely voluntary and of their own volition. I did not seek an army, yet their dedication is admiarble and... useful." She turns back to the icy queen, taking slow, deliberate steps forward. "I see you have wished to speak with me. Seeing as no one mentioned Renarin, this meeting slipped beneath my gaze. I am here now, however, and curious as to how this will proceed." With a sudden smirk, she looks towards the 'traitor', tipping her head in a quick nod of acknowledgement. "Qu'est-ce que 'sup, Quiv?"

  22. “They call me Rengar,” the man said in a supremely macho voice, lounging back against the booth, “because nobody knows my real name. And if they did, they wish they could forget it.” The man looked up, and promptly adjusted his large hat. “I am the man known from Aimia to Alethkar. I am the man who wrestled a whitespine blindfolded. I am the man who climbed the Horneater Peaks… twice. I am the man who went to a Herdazian family reunion, just for the fun of it. I am…” The man paused, dramatically taking off his hat. “...Insanity!” Just for clarity, the character's name is Rengar, not Insanity. He's just insane. And very manly, when he feels like it. But most of the time, he's just insane.

  24. DID ANYBODY ELSE LOVE THIS GUY!? Seriously, of all of the interludes, Axies was the only one I remembered long after my first read-through of WoK. He's hilarious and I really wanted to see more of him. His work is so interesting! (Axies is the guy who wakes up butt naked in an alley when trying to discover if Alespren exist. He can manipulate his physical appearance and documents his research on his skin) And then I read WoR and realized: Did he stand out for anybody else?

  25. Short update so that no one thinks I'm dead. I've been dreading getting cracking on the Stormlight Archive and Words of Radiance boards, as some might be able to tell. I was planning on finishing the Cosmere boards before my trip next Monday, and then starting the WoR boards after. Slogging through those 2500 posts to find all the tiny nuggets of joy, endless, countless hours preparing, watching, finding, reading, typing... so I said: NO MORE and wrote myself a script! I'm very proud of my script - it looks at all the threads in the boards, takes down all the relevant information, and heuristically analyzes the language in the post, the structure, the grammar, the spelling, the punctuation, the quotes, the references, and over 500 key Cosmere terms (Thanks R'Shara!) to produce a massive list. The script sorts the items by class -> Class 1 is 90% confident it's a theory. Class 2 is 80%, Class 3 is 65%, Class 4 is everything else. It then grabs all the pertinent information and records it so I don't have to - author, date, title, link, etc. It then uses the first post analysis to generate the most likely Location, Category, and Topic of the post. It also produces a list of other probable topics, and rates them. It then assigns the theory a score based on the content, and chooses a tag according to this score. The metric system is the same I've been using in my manual evaluations, as best the computer can manage. In my tests against the existing theory list, theories were tagged with 87% consistency with my own ratings, locations were 97% consistent, categories were 76% consistent (the 'Plot' and 'Joke' categories are 0% consistent, sadly), and the topic was 45% consistent for the core topic, but 96% consistent that the topic I assigned was on the probable topic list. It also attempts to notice things where it feels it has got them badly wrong, and mark them for me to consider with attention. So overall, it's pretty darned good at what it does. It is of course quite possible that the inconsistent one in determining the original entries has been me on many occasions, and that the script judged it better. Noneless, before adding any of the entries to the Index I'll be reviewing them all. This will still take time, mind you, but significantly less time as not only will there be a lot less typing and copy-pasta, but there should be about 4 in 5 entries that I don't need to modify (out of the theories - non theories will have to be winnowed out and deleted). Anyway, I started running the script, and you can find the results of Cosmere board pages 1-14 and the entire Stormlight Board here. Words of Radiance board will pop up later tonight, so it might be on there when you read it. Some things you may note if you take a glance: There are lots of bandaids. This is because it evaluates all threads. The ones that are not theories are highly likely to come up with a bandaid when they get evaluated, because they are of course not theories. Class 4 is very big. This is also due to most of those threads being non-theories (but not all by any means) The scoring system has some huge outliers at the upper end. The scores are based partly on exponential functions evaluating the criteria. As a result, the scoring system tends to break down around 35 points, and starts ramping up drastically after that, leading to some threads (especially unusual threads with inordinate amounts of quotes or formatting) being exceptionally high. This is intended, the score is merely an indicator of the presence of elements of well crafted theories, and identifying outliers is part of its job. Some people have changed their display names since I scraped earlier, mostly my fault due to the Joke Proile Pic thread >.> This has messed with my table, haha. Reap what you sow!

  26. He did say that, but it was after being a gruesome conversation where his "friends" took absolutely no notice on how badly it made him feel. Still, he does not try to defend his point-of-view whenever he is in a social event. He is very vocal to Dalinar about pretty much everything, but to his peers? He says nothing and boils on this inside. The one time we saw him trying to open up to someone his rank, Jakamav, he gets turn down because he ran out of favor. He is still young, but I agree he should have developed at least one significant friendship. My personal guess is he never was very comfortable with anyone his age, but he only realized this recently. He noticed in WoR that whereas people seem to like him and enjoy his company, no one would willing to stand by his side when it matters. I have always assumed it was why he was drawn to Kaladin, because he had his back when he needed it despite having every reasons not to. As for WoK, he gave me the impression of the nice kid going down with the flow and trying to fit in as best as possible. His father made that impossible, so he got mad at him. Eventually, he realized his father was right and he started drifting away from the main crowd. The questions in his head started shortly after. Before, I think he just didn't give it much thought, but we had clues he was tiring of the never ending doom courtships game. Well, there seem to be quite a few young people on the Shattered Plains... Adolin courted at least dozens and dozens of girls so we can assumed there were an equivalent number of young men for him to buddy with. His father's army has many officers whom have sons his age, like captain Kahl. There are no reasons why he couldn't be friends with such a person even if he ranks slightly lower than him. He did not give me the feeling of someone who was careful with his relationships, but more of someone who was holding back, someone who was not comfortable sharing. I have seen people behaving this way in real life, people who are extremely friendly, who get invited to all the party, but who, somehow, have no close friends. From my experience, they usually are people who are good at fitting in, at behaving like the crowd expects them to, but in doing so are going against their nature. They are afraid to show their true colors for fear of not fitting in anymore if they did.

  27. Day 4: Double Death Sea 2 Day 4: The night had started peacefully enough compared to what had gone on during the day. A prankster was busy gluing all the furniture to the ceiling of the meeting hall to make it look like the room was upside down to the rest of the nobility. Another trained to build muscle and to be able to defend against the Ghostbloods. Soon enough though, the trust had snapped and Fnorf crept towards Jain's house stealthily trying to not be seen. As he approached, he summoned his Shardblade. It coalesced into his hand as drops of water dripped off. He had been through so much to get the Blade. It had taken his entire fortune. It had been worth it though. A Shardblade was invaluable. Fnorf sliced a hole in the window of the Shin man's house. He crept through, quietly slinking towards the bedroom. A toy panda that the eccentric Shin had brought with him was grinning evilly at Fnorf as he entered the room. Shivers ran down his spine as the panda shifted to stare at Jain. Fnorf brought the Blade up and down into Jain's chest. Jain's eyes flashed open and burned, his soul cut by the Blade. Fnorf crept out the hole he had made and dismissed his Shardblade, walking back to his home. All of a sudden, a regular blade plunged through his back and he collapsed to the ground, his Shardblade appearing next to him. The murderer with the bloody sword grinned. He had found a Shardblade at last. The King had never stood a chance against his blade and now no one ever would. Jain was a Noble with a Painrial. Fnorf was a Noble with a Shardblade. The day begins now and will end at 3:30 pmMDT/22:30 GMT on Saturday.

  34. If he just allowed himself to get closer, that'd be fine. But he just did as he wished without caring for the etiquette. It's not the actions themselves I find problematic, it's the way he acted and spoke that made it all too rude and out of place. He could have achieved the same (expressing his opinion, etc) without the attitude.

  35. It's certainly very important. I think the bond allows/encourages squires to express the Radian's primary attribute, but that's speculative. I think all who gained access to stormlight expressed Protecting as an integrated part of them (or adopted trait, if you wish), but I can't say if it's a must, just for now looks right to me. Although I have trouble imagining Vathah suddenly involved in a creative activity if he is to become Shallan's squire.

  36. He pretty clearly says that he thought it (read: the screaming) were all in his head when confronted about it by Dalinar at the very end of the book. Feather would probably write a much longer post about it, but he does hear the screaming (he is erratic and disturbed when bonding it, but calms down when finally able to dismiss it; he grimaces when he first touches it; he grimaces when summoning it during the Narack battle (Shallan even comments on it)). The screaming is likely as strong for Renarin as it was for Kaladin, but he is (or at least has been) sick, and he knows how others view him. He likely wasn't all that surprised that he first heard it, and he figured that it was all just something happening in his own head.

  39. Magic has limits besides cognitive input. If magic only did things when you believe they will happen, no one would have discovered magic because no one would have expected it to happen If magic worked only on how you thought it would work, the least skilled people would be the strongest, and would not struggle or overreach themselves as does Vivenna with Awakening. Crazy people would be even stronger than kids. So would extremely arrogant people. What would stop an Allomancer from looking at the Lord Ruler and saying "If he can do it, so can I", and then doing it? Genetics. If magic happened just because you believed it would, anyone could use magic, and they would all be as strong as they believe themselves to be. There would be no genetic component. Basically, magic has all sorts of hard limits, and while training your thoughts is important, especially for some forms, it is merely a tool. It is just as important to train your brain to understand how to throw a punch for a boxer, yet a boxer can not throw a megaton punch extending fifteen feet just because he believes he can. You need the knowledge, the muscle, the training, the knowhow just to punch correctly, never mind absurdly. In the same way, the thoughts you use to enact a magic affect the effects of the magic, within the parameters already allowed by the magic.

  41. I spotted lots of subtle things on re-reading WoR though much of that was foreshadowing events later in the book. In terms of hidden things that aren't explained later, some more "hidden" than others, here's a couple of things that spring to mind: Galivar - for a dead dude he becomes more mysterious by the day Renarin - what's been happening to him and what can he do Dalinar - what can Bondsmiths really do and why are they so rare? Shallan - what happened to her before her mother died? How did she first meet Pattern and what did she do? Shallan #2 - can her Surges directly affect people's minds? Shallan #3 - can she see remote events in past/current/future? (such as when she drew Yalb and Shalash) Shallan #4 - was her taking of the slaves a hint to future events involving slavery? Jasnah has also said that Alethi society is too stratified Shallan's mother and her "friend" Dreder - why did they try to kill Shallan? Helaran - what was he trying to do and why? Nalan/Nin - what does he really want and how sane is he? Taln! Taln? Taln!? Teft - he seems to have some kind of long-term gambling addiction or money problem Wit/Hoid's flute - what happened to it and is it important? Ghostbloods - where in the Cosmere are they from and what are they after? Horneaters - why were they (supposedly) so feared in the past and what's going on with their mountaintops? the "old people" the Stormfather talks about - they will be transformed by the Everstorm, but are they just Parshman/Parshendi or are there others? Radiant squires - how does it work and what can they do? The Recreance is still a big mystery. spren cousins - Syl refers to windspren as her cousins. Did honorspren diverge (evolve, branch, split, whatever) from windspren? Are Cryptics similarly "cousins" to creationspren? spren memory - do they have some kind of group memory or how can Syl and Pattern both know about ancient events? (Pattern at least says he wasn't "alive" then) spren cities - what are they like, how are they built? spren politics - why do Cryptics have such a reputation, etc? What are they really? (I suspect they're actually "fictionspren") chasamfiends - where do they come from? do they have some form of spren bonding? are they related to santhids? can they be bred? glyphs - there has got to be a lot more to them if they spontaneously appear around Radiants. Feels like they could be some kind of hidden magic system and burning prayer glyphs somehow evolved out of this

  46. I mostly dislike it for the cliche factor. There are several elements to that: 1. Love triangles are obnoxious to me. They can be done terribly (Twilight) and more acceptably (Hunger Games), but ultimately, I find them tiresome. Generally, IRL, if you are in a true "love triangle," you shouldn't be with either of the people. I certainly wouldn't want to end up with someone who barely chose me over someone else... 2. MMC and FMC meet and hate each other at first but then fall in luuuuurve. No thanks. I also do genuinely like Adolin and Shallan, and I feel like if that relationship fails, I'd like the failure to be explored in the context of that relationship which is difficult to do if another person is directly responsible for its downfall. Like, them not working out because they realize that their goals and personalities are ultimately incompatible is so much more realistic than them not working out because Shallan sees that Kaladin is more dark, brooding, and intellectual than Adolin and that she wants that instead of what Adolin has to offer.
