  2. This is my first post, so I appologize if the topic has already been brought up. I was just wondering why Dalinar and the Alethi haven't just stormcast solid stone bridges across the shattered planes. It is apparent that they can create HUGE structures out of thin air, so it stands to reason that they could create large enough bridges out of stone that the Parshendi couldn't break down. Up to this point it seems like all the bridges have been made from soulcast wood that is easily burned down or destroyed by the Parshendi. If Dalinar wants to make an effort to move many of the armies onto the plains, then it would be helpful to have more of these permenant bridges. The only reason why I could see them not doing this so far is that it has been a race between the armies to get the gem hearts, each army having their own bridges. If there were more permenant bridges then Sadeas would lose the advantage he has with his bridge crews. Now that he no longer has them it might make sense for Dalinar to consider this.

  3. Shiv blinked. Had he two eyes, he was sure it might have had more of an effect. Come to think of it, when you were missing an eye, was it still blinking, or was it endless winking? Was there any difference between a blink and a wink? Was blinking just winking with both eyes? He lost himself in thought for several moments, considering the implications of this possibility. Blinking (winking?) again, he shook his head. What was going on again? Oh, right. People wanted to kill him. That was something that should take precedence. Honestly, though, after the fifth time someone tried to stick a knife in your gut, one kind of grew numb to the threat of potentially imminent death. "Wasing burning to the what?" he said, his eye widening. "Top of the what as how of crooked? Notting the proving to have, hasing to look of the tatters on the scope, whatting as the say on the shine top!" He shook his head, frowning and slipping off the table he'd been sitting on. He looked around the room again. "Notting just the finding of cuts and coins, notting the have of need to the doing." He lifted his head, looking again at the message that was on the wall. "Hasing specific to the what as to the back and back. Hasing the was of doing in the far, the whatting of watch as without wonder. Whatting the do of seeing the notting, but whatting the do of seeing the seeing? Hasing the has of making the not on the rest, giving the sliceback, wasing the has on the had?" "Wasing the why of the bring," he said, gesturing toward himself. He lifted his chin, looking again at the message left by the nasty. "Wasing the what of the bringing. Hasing the do of the needing as the right, more one the needing with the many. Hasing half the brighting, but hasing more see to the all." He paused for a moment, frowning before adding, "Notting the have so nasty of the dealing..." His hand shot out, and he pointed a finger at Cessie. "Wasing not the has of the right too," he said bluntly. "Wasing us to rows and rows the previous, wasing the know of sly on the what. Sliding the slides of the sludge to the south." Spinning, the finger pointed at Hero. "Notting the right have on the again. Hasing of the nearing, so the has of the right evens." Whipping his finger to the right... then slightly further to the right, off Dyring and onto Wilson (damned depth perception!) he continued. "Wasing to look on the enter. Having the grin on the edge of the new nasty not near for the nice. Hasing the not of the has on the last." His finger pointed at Dyring again, this time on purpose. "And of the was..." he said, narrowing his eye. "Wasing to giving right rot on the now? Hasing the have of scratch, wasing as the has of the ashing." I didn't really expect this to go on as long as it did... This was something I'd had in mind for Shiv as a character from the beginning. I liked the idea of crews sort of having "internal affairs officers" to police themselves and catch anyone who was screwing things up from the inside.

  4. Okay, since I can't sleep, let's see how much I can get out before the pills kick in. To cover this first - I kept from telling Peng that I had snapped because I wasn't yet certain he could be trusted. Most everyone else went along with his declaration of being the Mistborn early, but I thought there was too much potential for it to be a scam. There are two ways to alleviate suspicion from yourself; one such is to come out early as the hero, the one that everyone can trust, and get everyone onto your side. Since I was just regular crew at the time, I didn't have anything to hide, and nothing much to worry about other than being killed in the night or being spiked. When I snapped, and suddenly could have an impact on the events of the game other than with a vote, I decided the safest thing was to hold my tongue until I was sure Peng could be trusted. After some careful analysis, I decided he could be, and told him my role. There is another way to alleviate suspicion from yourself, and I would have thought there would be someone here would be well-versed in tropes to recognize this. Make yourself a victim. It's shown up countless times in movies and books, where the villain themselves sets up their own attack, barely manages to survive, and then continues their dastardly plot while no one even considers them. This happens so often, there's an entire page on TV Tropes about it. This takes all suspicion off of them, and leaves them free to operate, at least for a little while, with no one the wiser. This has been playing in my mind ever since I read the description about a Thug's abilities in this game; it'd be ridiculously simple to fake an attack and claim to have been a Thug. Taking the above, let's reconsider the power given up by the Inquisitor this turn. Uber-Copper, which makes them seem as though they were just a normal villager/crew. Consider as well that, as of this point, several people have been Seeked; I don't know who has come up clean, but in the light of such a revelation, is there not the chance that someone deemed clean may, in fact, not be? Am I claiming that Cessie is faking this in order to remove suspicion from herself? Not entirely. What I am saying is that jumping to me on what is really some flimsy evidence, without even asking for more or trying to get discussion going (and considering how many people we've killed through sheer bandwagon, I'd think we'd be open to the idea of debate and making dead certain) is the wrong way to go about it. I'm beginning to regret having told Peng that I'd Snapped, seeing how he leapt right into "Let there be blood!" Also, I'm still rather peeved from being outed. Not cool, especially since I'm completely innocent. Not even a message asking me to defend myself on this first... But I digress; what I propose is this - we kill no one. Instead, if we have anyone capable of Seeking, that they Seek either Cessie or myself. One of us will show up as a Misting, especially since the Inquisitor does not have Uber-Copper anymore. If I am Seeked, and I show up as a bad guy, then by all means kill me. If Cessie is Seeked, and it does not reveal her as a Thug, then clearly someone is lying. Either way, someone is found innocent, and someone is found guilty.

  6. Well, I never thought I'd see the day that someone uses TV tropes to try to convince someone not to kill them. Shiv, while I think that you've argued well for your side, I don't fully agree. I don't think that at this point we can risk not killing someone. I don't think that we can risk waiting till the next day to prove whether you're wrong or right. What I will do is retract my previous vote and instead vote for no-one until I am convinced one way or the other. I will most likely make up my mind before the end of the day. You couldn't expect people to ask you to defend yourself, because if you are the Inquisitor that gives you a better chance to talk yourself out of the situation. Better to let the accused bring out their own defense. That said, I don't approve of the mob mentality either.

  7. I'm going to take you through my complete thought process here. It's not long, and it's not very intellectual, but these couple ideas kept me busy for around 10 minutes, so... I was thinking on the "Soulcast air into bridges" topic, and what it really means if you can Soulcast air into things.... considering it is everywhere. Unless you are having a space battle, that's pretty over powered, hahaha. Then I started thinking "What if someone tried to Soulcast the entire atmosphere around Roshar into.... well it wouldn't really matter, because any material would doom the planet. That would be a really villainous thing to do, however obnoxious that storyline would be. They'd have to hunt for some huge gemheart that could handle Soulcasting like that. Oh my gosh it would be the Bowl of the Winds quest all over again." But you wouldn't really need a huge gemheart, would you? You could probably just bring standard gems (or however Soulcasting KR take in Stormlight) into a hightstorm and have like infinite Stormlight. That is on such a huge scale that it sounds like you could poke 1 bajillion holes in it, but what if instead you just walked into a highstorm and Soulcast the storm itself into something?! Picture Jasnah in armor walking into a highstorm and Soulcasting it into food ( I like to think it would be pot pies) and then literally eating the Stormfather. Hey Brandon, if you ever need a co-author/idea man, private message me and we can exchange phone numbers.

  10. Wilson enters the room and looks around. She giggles a little at the poem on the wall, finding the Tineye to be quite the comedian. Then she notices the list stuck to the wall. Aonar's list. For a quick moment, she worries that someone is trying to take over her apprenticeship, but then she dismisses that worry. There's nothing stopping Aether from taking another. She'll be fine. However, I should probably throw up some sort of list. Just to make sure. She sits down at the bar and listens to the accusations, fascinated by the Lord Mistborn's evidence. It seems like they might finally be on the right course. She starts scribbling furiously on a piece of paper, and when she's finished, she takes a knife from the counter and sticks the list up on the wall for all to see. Current Vote Count Hero - 0 Shiv - 8 (Peng, Barty, Hero, Gamon, Kukri, Ridge, Dyring, Roban) Cessie - 3 (Maxill, Ollivier, Shiv) No one - 1 (Aspren) Haven't voted yet - 10 (Windy, Vron, Wes, Seran, Aether, Matheiu, Aonar, Cessie, Wilson, Grave) Suspicions/Opinions Quillion and Ridge both agree that people previously claimed to be regular crew members are suspects. Dyring still suspects his previous suspects (Aspren, Vron, Aonar, Hero, Maxill, Wilson, and Gamon) Barty suspects Hero. Hero, in turn, has his eye on Barty (although not because Barty suspects him). Shiv and Cessie both claim to have Snapped. One is definitely lying. Peng suspects Shiv, but has also stated we will be out less if Cessie dies and she is innocent than we would if Shiv dies and he's innocent. Votes Barty for Hero (retracted) Peng for Shiv Barty retracted vote for Hero; votes for Shiv Hero for Shiv Gamon for Shiv Kukri for Shiv Ridge for Shiv Vron for Shiv Aspren for Shiv Dyring for Shiv Shiv for no one. Maxill for Cessie Roban for Shiv Ollivier for Cessie Shiv retracted vote for no one; votes for Cessie (to be updated throughout the day) EDIT 1: Figured I should probably put the list of those who've told Peng their roles too, based on who said so earlier. Here is the crew list. Those who've told Peng are bold. Gamon Barty Windy Wes Ridge Vron Seran Kukri Aether Matheiu Aonar Cessie Herwynbe Dyring Ollivier Maxill Roban Wilson Shiv - Didn't admit, but Peng said he got the PM. EDIT 4: Added Vron, Aspren, and Dyring's votes. EDIT 5: Added Shiv's vote, changed Aspren's, added the people who haven't voted, and updated the suspicions/opinions with the Shiv/Cessie Snapped debate. EDIT 6: Added Maxill's vote. 12. First off, to save me from putting the whole thread in a spoiler tag I am going to state straight off, I hope to discuss the story and impressions of the game so this post will contain spoilers for the whole story (including the final twist at the very very end). So if you have not played it, please be wary of reading this thread. So I just spent a very happy weekend playing this game and confess that I was quite affected by the narrative (despite its quite enormous plot holes and logical inconsistencies). First off the good points: The art design and atmospheric feel of Columbia is a tour-de-force in my opinion. The city is beautiful well realised and the culture feels quite realistic (as far as games go anyway). The sound and music are also great and I did not really appreciate until the end, how well the music was used to foreshadow the multi-worlds / tears storyline. The game also had some real emotional impact for me as well. I came, quite quickly to feel a significant amount of connection to the relationship between Elizabeth and Booker and culmination of this in the final scene left me starting at the screen for a good 5 minutes in shock and no small amount of emotional turmoil. In particular I found the section climbing through the 're-education' centre listening to Elizabeth's audio journals very affecting. I was properly terrified for what she was going though and whether I would be too late to save her soul. Now, the not so good: The story is, unfortunately, more grand in ambition than in execution. When I though about it outside of the emotional investiture I had placed in it, I quickly realised that the narrative made no logical sense and the ultimate conclusion did not actually resolve anything (and is thus pretty meaningless). At the end of the day, the death of Booker at the Baptism is intended to stop the rise of Comstock in the alternative timeline. However, in an infinite multiverse, such an attempt is meaningless as only the Comstock / Booker from that particular paired timeline will be eliminated. You can always go back to another branch (previous to the baptism) and follow of forward to baptism again and have the same fork. Therefore the death of Booker doesn't really solve anything in that respect. Another issue I had was the gameplay, particularly the combat. It is pretty generic FSP stuff for the most part but has some annoying bullet management and really clunky 'upgrade' mechanics, these made the game needlessly annoying in some sections. The Vigours I found fun to play with but felt that they were not really integrated into either the environment or the populous very well. The Shock Jockey Vigour is a good example of this; the game spends a significant amount of time making you search for this so that you can power the gondola.. fine. But then this mechanic of powering stuff by using the Vigour is completely ignored for the rest of the game. The potential here would have been to use this power to provide innovative solutions to combat or power lifts or... whatever. As a consequence the actual combat in the game is only really interesting during the big set pieces with the skyrails. Also bad... Handymen... they are not a fun addition to the game.. at all! Despite all of these drawbacks though, I thoroughly enjoyed playing. The dynamic between Booker and Elizabeth and the ultimate conclusion of this had real emotional weight (which is rare for me). The logical inconsistencies and less than impressive use of game mechanics in combat did not seem significant while I was playing and only dawned on me after the fact. Anyone else played this game (which I still consider an artistic and emotional masterpiece if not a particularly ground braking one)? If so what did you think?

  14. I've been thinking. In WoK, we encounter three foreigners in the Purelake, looking for Hoid. In Hoid's note, he is said to have laid a false trail for them to follow. Assuming these are the ones he laid the trail for, I have to ask the question; What is so important about the Purelake that the people of the 17th Shard would believe Hoid would spend time there? Just a question, I've got some theories, but nothing definite. The Purelake drains during Highstorms, right? That isn't exactly natural, so maybe it is draining to protect it's waters from being polluted by the Highstorms? Purelake. Maybe it -is- a Shardpool and as such, it is defending itself. Maybe it has something to do with the Keep Dalinar saw during his vision out in the Purelake? I don't know, but its some food for thought for all of you.

  20. Then, if I do die, consider this - if I'm killed, and it's revealed I was the Inquisitor or a Spiked, then Cessie is telling the truth. But if I'm killed, and I'm not Spiked nor am I an Inquisitor, then Cessie is lying, either for herself or on behalf of someone else... Or, you could Seek one of us and know for certain without any bloodshed. Edit: dyring, you are assuming those events all happened at the same time. I think Meta is either giving us a non-linear plot, or being deliberately vague about the timeframe in which events are happening during the course of a night. And, before anyone suggests that Cessie has to have been a Thug because Meta said so - if the Inquisitor is playing a Wounded Gazelle Gambit, then the moderator of the game isn't going to spill the secret. Edit 2: Aspren, what I meant was almost everyone just leapt right on board with "Kill Shiv!" I think one or two people said something about it, butI had thought that with every single choice made so far having been wrong, people would be more willing or more capable of taking analytical duties upon themselves. No insult meant, but as I said before, or, at least alluded to, the bandwagon approach has netted us a grand total of ZERO successes. We're clearly not doing something right. I don't expect people to just jump in and defend me, but there should be more discussion.

  21. I doubt that light-weaving was involved in this incident, it's unlikely that Shallan had light-weaving abilities that many years ago. But your point about the use of the word monster is very interesting. Perhaps this relates to the fact that there are multiple bodies that have apparently been killed by different means. The NPAM could have been a weapon (shardblade?) used by one of the dead individuals to kill Shallan's mother, an object like that might seem monstrous to a child. Shallan may have then killed the assassin/killer after seeing her mother killed, but the fact that child Shallan killed a person could lead her to view herself as a monster. Edit: Alternative theory, the NPAM was already in the strongbox. Whatever it is it could have been put in there by Shallan's father before this incident. When she asked what was in there, Shallan's father could have told her a monster was inside. Then someone comes along looking to steal it, but things go awry and he ends up killing Shallan's mother and getting killed himself.

  22. Maybe NPAM is a mirror fabrial with a deadly function (perhaps related to Lightweaving?), and young Shallan accidentally killed those people while looking at her own reflection in that mirror. In a child's mind, her reflection could be seen as the same exact "monster" that she herself thinks she is.

  24. Ah, a very old question that I haven't seen in quite awhile. Apparently, though, it wouldn't work. According to Brandon, the Alethi would have to build the bridges out of wood, then Soulcast them to stone, then add some ropes and whatnot for support because turning it to stone makes the bridges to heavy. I, for one, find this answer unsatisfying. As the Romans showed us, it's thoroughly possible to create free-standing stone bridges over much more challenging gaps than the chasms represent. Conclusion: Either the Alethi are truly and utterly terrible at engineering (remember, they only have to deal with 0.7 gravity on top of how easy it is to build these things on Earth) and/or Soulcasting even relatively simple structures like bridges out of thin air is very hard. Or Brandon didn't quite think it through when he thought of why there couldn't be permanent stone bridges.

  25. The Parshendi Burned several of the Outermost Bridges, which means the Permanent ones are made of Wood. I think that In the Beginning, nobody wanted to risk losing Money to Soulcast the Bridges, then the Parshendi started destroying Bridges, so They Resorted to Mobile Bridges. Then then by the Time they Found the Gemhearts to Soulcast the Bridges, It had Become a contest, and Saddeas (Having the Fastest bridges) Pushed to not make Stone ones, and the Other Princes Agreed to Race. Dalinar will Probably Change that now that he's HighPrince of War. Great First Question though. I've never heard it Before. EDIT: Spellin. Spelling. EDIT2 Misspelled Spelling.

I realize there is a way better one being made in another topic, but this one is a simple, unflourished version to tide us over until it is finished! Enjoy: AlethiTS Font.zip Alternate Link: Here If your are using a non-Windows operating system and .tff fonts don't work on your computer, let me know what file type you need and I'll make one for ya. ------ I have made some updates, including fixing the size of the font, so you can use it at 12pt without problems even seeing it I aligned the center lines on all characters so they match up now. I have also added the center line to the period character. As a bonus, for people who want the entire sentence to fit on one center line, I have included a second font that adds the center line to the space character called AlethiTS_lined.ttf Version 2: AlethiTS Fontv2.zip

To Alyx, Renarin sees a spren that nobody else does.Theorize, freak out, squee as you will. I’ll just be over here melting into a puddle of Renarin feels and occasionally making high pitched noises of glee. ALSO: Obligatory link to the ongoing discussion over on tumblr involving this new info. I am very much a fan of Emma (lunarubato)'s theory that Renarin might become a Skybreaker based on the idea that Radiant canditates exemplify one of their attributes and must learn to grow in terms of the other attribute. Really good stuff. I may just espouse that one.

  29. Hello, this is my first post here and I've just started diving deep into Sanderson speculation but I wanted to raise the idea that's been kicking around my head as I've seen something multiple times recently: In many places (largely the Coppermind wiki) I have seen statements like the following: "The first Order of the Knights Radiant with the ability to bind Surges gravity and atmospheric pressure. The combination of these two Surges resulted in three separate powers which were known as the Three Lashings.[11]" Is there some confirmation that the combination of the surges is involved in the lashings? The citations on that statement don't support that directly. Physics tells me that changing the direction of gravity for something, making 2 things attracted to each other, and making everything more attracted to a certain object would all just be gravity. Despite that, it seems like most people are assuming that both surges work together to be the lashings. Counter-evidence 1: The other identified proto-Radiants (that's what I'm calling them) have very distinct manifestations of their 2 surges. These examples are from the WoR preview chapters on Tor so I'm putting them in spoiler tags: Counter-evidence 2: Shallan and Jasnah can both Soulcast and it seems very similar for both of them. This suggests that shared surges manifest the same for those who share them (though I won't rule out surges interacting). I think there is very strong evidence that although they may only realize 1 power at first (as some of the examples did), each order had 2 very distinct powers. Implications: Kaladin has another yet undiscovered power. Logically I would expect atmospheric pressure to affect the weather. It's easy to imagine it could create wind (hence windrunners). Kaladin's vision of riding the storm (and conversation with the Stormfather/Voice in the highstorm) could be related to windrunning. It seems like most orders are named after 1 of their powers and nothing Kaladin has actually done yet really relates to wind. Szeth (who has no spren) might have only 1 surge. Since his power doesn't come from the usual source maybe he isn't from an order and he doesn't have 2 surges. This would flow with the theory that Cultivation can grant surges but not as well just as Ruin and Preservation could imperfectly power their opposite's metallic art. Even if Szeth does have 2 surges the other one could be different from Kaladin's making him I think a Bondsmith. But I'm really not

  30. This question may have been mulled over already in the WoK section, but it just seems like such an odd thing to be omitted from the story. You would think someone close to him would have inherited it, but Elhokar's fits a different description. Jasnah has not revealed anything towards her having it, via PoV chapters, and I figure if Dalinar had it - Sadeas would know - as he was present at the same time when Jasnah conveyed the message. Still, as I talk my way through it - Dalinar seems like the best bet, as I'm confident he has a second shard blade (or just one, as he gave up Oathbringer) Again, apologies if I'm mulling over something that's been posted before.

  31. I'm of course referring to "Red Carpet, once White", Shallans WoR Interlude. Several contributors already pointed out at least one of the usages of the word "monster" in the interlude. But nobody so far tried to make a connection, if I didn't miss something somewhere (iff so: Sorry!). The citations in question are, as most of you know and I really doubt, that an author like Brandon would use the same word for different things in such a confined space. So I think, he used it twice on purpose. Obviously ... well, at least I hope so ... there is no other child put in the safe box. So why does child Shallan think of both things as "monster". Obviously she views both as identical in a way yet to be revealed. How about the following first attempt of an explanation: The now-put-away monster (NPAM) scared Shallan. Intuitively in self defense she used her light weaving abilities to mimic the NPAM. Noticing the sudden SAMENESS, Shallan now thought herself as of the same kind as the NPAM. Mind you, this is no explanation for the dead bodies or her crying father, what the NPAM monster is and what it and Shallan contributed to the scene. But thats not important for the explanation of the double usage of "monster". What do you think?

  32. I'm skeptical that Highlord Amaram would be personally involved in the branding of slaves. I believe that Kaladin would be an outlier here. The branding of slaves is more than likely a function of the magistrate. This being the case, no one would have reason to suspect that Kaladin would have been personally branded by the Highlord. I am not disputing the Highlords authority to personally brand someone, I'm simply suggesting that most of the time this authority would be delegated down to the magistrate. Even in the case where a slave is personally branded by a Highlord, which may occur on occasion to deserters and thieves within a military camp, it would be assumed that the person found guilty and branded for said crime was guilty, and had no one but themselves to blame for their branding. In this case it wouldn't be expected that the slave would hold animosity for the person who branded them so much as perhaps those that caught him. It would, in my opinion, likely be considered rude to ask someone who just saved your life, your sons life, and the lives of 2500 of your soldiers what kind of criminal he is, so I'm not surprised that Dalinar hadn't broached the topic as yet.

  33. I seriously doubt that repeating the ideals by regurgitation or reading off of a page would have any effect at all. The words of the ideal come into the mind of the KR acolyte, if you will, spontaneously. It is only when this happens that the words of the ideal appear to have any effect.

I would do the timeline as follows: -Nohadon vision -KR formed, WoK written, Urithiru founded during Nohadon's lifetime -multiple desolations (Purelake vision could be here) -Starfalls vision -multiple desolations (Purelake vision could also be here) -the last Desolation, Heralds betrayal -splintering of Honor possible here -abandonment of Urithiru -splintering of Honor also possible here -Recreance -splintering of Honor also possible here -Hierocracy -Sunmaker -Shattering and fall of Natanatan

  35. Yeah, sorry Shiv, but I'm pretty sure you're Spiked just from your behavior at this point. In no world is not killing either of you the best choice. Either you or Cessie should die tonight, since it's guaranteed one of you is Spiked. Sitting and waiting is counterproductive. ---- Even his suspicious behavior aside, let's look at what would have to have happened for Shiv to be innocent: The only way that he is not Spiked is the following scenario: 1) Cessie is Spiked 2) Cessie was an Unsnapped who Snapped upon being Spiked (1/4 of that happening upon Spikeage) -And she happens to be a Thug. This is necessary for a plan such as he proposes, but not really a factor in terms of probability 3) Team Evil can attack their own, and did 4) They actually did all this convoluted nonsense for the express purpose of offing exactly one villager (Shiv), at which point, if he's innocent, Cessie would immediately die the next round. So this versus the simple solution of Shiv being Spiked? I'd kill Shiv first. If he's innocent, then Cessie dies next round and it all ends with a 1:1 trade, which is still definitely in our favor. Either Shiv or Cessie should die tonight either way, and he's the more likely suspect.

  36. This is, regrettably, untrue, I think. For, Master Shiv, while we are taking the extra time to seek you or Lady Cessie, there will indeed be bloodshed. The inquisitor and his followers will not sit idly by while we go about confirming our suspicions, and we can be assured that whosoever they target will be someone that we do not wish to die. Rest assured, Master Shiv, that this possibility has not escaped the notice of anyone here. We still do not know all of the powers that are possessed by the inquisitor. However, given what we do know, it is most likely that you are indeed the guilty party. Let me be the one to remind you that the one time that we as a group did not follow the bandwagon possibility, indeed, the time when I, and several others, decided to go against the wishes of Lord Peng and his followers, was a colossal failure, as I myself well know. It is a fallacy to assume that because one strategy has not worked before that it will not work the next time, I think.

  38. The Alethi rely pretty heavily on cavalry for their assaults. You can set up effective defenses for cavalry charges with spears (but preferably pikes) if you know exactly where the charge will be coming through. If they relied on permanent bridges the parshendi would have an easier time holding those initial charges. The portable bridges allow them to attack at multiple points making it much more difficult for the parshendi to set up a defense. In order to have the same effectiveness, the Alethi would need multiple bridges permanently setup along each plateau which is too much work when the portable bridges do the job just fine. Also, couldn't Eshonai just slice any stone bridge to pieces anyway?

  39. Right now, it doesn't matter too much if she gets Spiked. What's important is that she's not the Inq. Before we start hunting down Spiked, we need to kill the Inq so he doesn't keep pumping out more. Also, Lol, did the Tineye just write Dyring a Ketek? He's having way too much fun with his role.

  41. Yeah, given that Wax's best friends just happen to be times manipulators, I think we're going to see something like this in Shadows of Self - or at least an offhand comment mentioning that it doesn't work.

  42. Hmm, perhaps the Purelake itself isn't a Shardpool, but maybe it is on top of one? Maybe like you said, there is a cavern underground that it drains into, and in the cavern is a little pool of metallic liquid or other strange liquid, and every time the lake drains, it touches this water, and the lake keeps getting little infusions of Shard magic? I don't know the specifics, but this is a fun idea.

  43. I also wondered at the purelake. if nothing else, a big lake that is only one meter deep should be geologically unstable. it would fill with sediments in no time, or it would evaporate, or grow. retreating underground during storms is another oddity. So yes, I agree that there is something strange with the purelake. it could actually be a shardpool (can they be so big? all the others we saw were at most a few meters across), although it don't fit much with shardpool's known behaviour. It could be something else, but i'd bet for sure there is something unnatural with it

  45. Some information about the history: TWoK Chapter 3 So this says: Shadowdays - Aharietiam - Recreance - Hierocracy - Sunmaker - Gavilar TWoK Chapter 26, emphasizes mine And the Hierocracy happened some five centuries prior to TWoK. TWoK Chapter 45 This quote isn't really 'on topic' but it seems to say that the Hierocracy and the Recreance correlate. I wondered before if the beginning/upcoming of the Hierocracy wouldn't have been the trigger of the Recreance. But this -- surely -- is only an idea of mine. Unfortunately I couldn't find when the Sunmaker destroyed the Hierocracy. TWoK Chapter 24 And that the Sunmaker was young, 17 years, when he started his conquest (TWoK Chapter 29), which was the destruction of the Hierocracy. Then: TWoK Chapter 12 It seems that posterior to Sunmaker's reign Alethkar once more disintegrated and "after centuries" Dalinar and Gavilar were the first to re-unite the ten Highprinces of Aletkhar. May be this helps a bit.

  46. NOOOOO!!! Just. Just. No. Amaram made him a slave. Killed his friends/squad. Failed to protect Tien. Whatever his reasoning, Kal hates him and just no. I will not accept this. (I may have to later revise that statement once I've read the book. Still. No.)

  49. Aye, Shen was a bit of a surprise standout to me. I'm now really hoping he finds his 'music' in WoR. I wonder if there isn't something cognitive going on with the Parshmen. Everyone views them as property so it reenforces their view of themselves as property. Shen is given a name, possessions, and is thought of as a person by Bridge Four and so he begins to develop a view of himself as a person.
