  1. So, the event was pretty awesome! Keep an eye on the interwebs for a picture of Brandon, Darnam, his friend, and I, all sporting the Seons we made! (Thanks to Darnam for the idea and providing all the materials) Brandon asked that we wait until the end of the signing so he could get a picture with us so he could tweet it! We also got Windrunner pins, which I didn't even know was a thing!! Very cool! So here are all the interesting questions from the signing. I was able to get my phone placed on the table right at the beginning, so we got the whole thing. First off, many props to all the people who have transcribed in the past. I never realized what a pain in the butt it is! (although with 3 authors at the table, I think this was even more noisy than usual) I added my comments in brackets, and added emphasis in bold. Q: Would a conventional science fiction society be able to travel between worlds via FTL? A: Yes, they definitely could. In fact, built into the system is...you will see space travel. In fact I have several of them plotted, I just can't write them yet. It is going to be really fun. One of my very first ideas for the Cosmere was this spaceship going between, and actually, Sixth of the Dusk, which is coming out, the _____ Anthology one, is Cosmere and they mention space travel in it, so..." [interesting! This will be our first in-world reference to space travel, yes?] Q: Are we going to see any other compounders like Miles Dagouter, but with other abilities? A: Yes, I plan to do more, just to show off what different compounding can achieve, so you will see some more like that. you will some other really interesting interactions with the magic system. Q: Who is your favorite character you have written: It is like picking between your children, blah blah, Perrin, blah blah. Picking between my own, I would probably say Dalinar. I started writing a story about Dalinar when I was 15, and then I finally got to write his book years later, so yeah. [This is the first time I have heard him say Dalinar!] Q: Are you ever going to do a big story about Adonalsium and take it out of the shadows? A: Yes, um, the series called Dragonsteel itself is that, and then at then end of all of this, there will be kind of a climactic one. So eventually yes, it is just a little ways off. [OOO this is the first I have heard of a final "Cosmere wrap up" book!] Q: If Adonalsium were to shatter in a parallel universe, would it divide into the same 16 intents? [That's mine!!] A: Um...it...Adonalsium could have been shattered in other ways. Follow up Q: Was there a force determining which way it shattered? A: Yes! [oooOOOoooOOOo!!! I got super excited and did a little happy dance, so if we already knew this, please don't spoil my fun...lol! So...that is big, right? We now know that Adonalsium was shattered with "intent" (ba dum KSHH!), not randomly! And, that it could have been shattered into different intents! Cool stuff ] Q: Would you please draw Aon Aon with the chasm line, so we know where the hell the chasm lines are? [That's Darnam's!] A: I always imagined it right there. [Hopefully Darnam can upload an image of the drawing!] Um, and so if you finished it...but the strictures of the first book, I didn't quite know what I was doing yet, and I was trying to match a map that didn't quite match what I had in my head. I could do it so much better now. But, the problem is, it is kinda down here at the bottom of this, but where I described it....if you don't mind me putting in this....[he drew Aon Rao with the chasm line) I described it right there in the book, and it needs to be up more. Q: In the past, with Alendi, when the mist spirit stabbed Fedik, was that Hemalurgic theft? [Darnam snuck in a question at the end!] A: Heh heh heh heh heh [VERY evil cackle!] ...interesting question! RAFO!!! Also, I think we can put to rest any worries that we annoy Brandon with all our questions. 90% of the interactions at the signing went like this: Brandon: Hi! Person: OMG You are the best! B: Thank you so much! Do you have any questions for me? P: Um...no, not really! B: *Sounding sad* Oh...ok... So ask away and make Brandon happy!!!

  2. I maybe be wrong. But Teft said that which order had different ideals based in the "Way of Kings" that had 40 parables. So 10 order x 4 unique ideals( the fist one are shared among all) = 40 ideals. One ideal for parable. This make sense given the fact that Nohadon wrote the book was a guide book for the KR. What is futher confirmed given the fact that Gavilar was "studying" the book to understand what are the "Most important words that a man can say" AKA the 40 (plus one) Ideals. So Jasnah ideals wasn't revelead yet =)

  4. From Cultivation and Honor, we have clear evidence that the Shards had at least some choice in choosing their planet. Their intents have almost nothing to do with each other, and with a one in fifteen chance, it seems unlikely that each would end up randomly paired with the exact person they would have chosen. Additionally, we know that Odium goes on vacation all the time. If he didn't like Braize, it seems like he could easily go somewhere else and live there instead. In fact, regardless of where they originally landed, all of the Shards apparently have the choice to set up shop wherever they want. Now, Word of Brandon tells us that Preservation and Ruin had almost no choice but to settle together. What if that doesn't refer to a literal compulsion, but to a rational decision (as in, "I have no choice but to go to work today")? Perhaps they could easily have settled anywhere they wanted, but the alternative to settling together was so unappealing that it really wasn't an option at all. Remember the sorts of things that happened when the two became unbalanced by even a little bit? Either the world stagnated and decayed for a millennium, or it suddenly rushed headlong into the apocalypse. Basically, both of them knew that they would ruin everything, given the chance, so they needed someone they could count on to be an absolutely obnoxious jerk and prevent them from messing with anything - someone who would, just out of principle, systematically oppose literally any decision they made. Had the Shard they chosen to settle down with been any less opposite, occasionally their intents would align, and these moments of freedom would gradually accumulate. Thus, in a manner of speaking, they would have 'had no choice' but to settle together - even though they were actually free to go wherever they pleased.

  5. For it being the first book in a destined ten, what has gripped you so far? What made you, when you read The Way of Kings, to go "wow, this is something." I mean, the fact you are on the forums means you must've at least liked the book if not loved. So what about the series so far has you hooked? Btw, please keep this to a Stormlight Archive only topic. Please no answers of, "well, like his Mistborn series..." Or, "I love how his cosmos connect!" Just keep it strictly SA

  7. I'm still learning my way around here, so I apologize if this has been considered before. Is it possible that Szeth is truthless as a result of a failed bond with the same type of spren that Shallan bonded with? I'm wondering if the Shin are aware of the symbolheads, and their stone shamans bond with them in some sort of public ceremony or ritual. Perhaps Szeth was intended to do this, but when asked for his truth to complete the bond, he lied? I don't know if a failed bond preclude him from seeing the symbolheads any longer, as he doesn't mention them.

  8. So i have been poking around the forums the last couple of days and I have had a hard time pinning down some information so feel free to tell me I'm wrong. I figure that the Knights radiant were not started by the haralds just that the 2 had parallels in intent and philosophy. The time line as I always saw it Nodohan wrote the way of kings and helped founded the knights radiant during a distant desolation using his teachings and and the teaching from the heralds. Then as the herald returned for each desolation and may have taken control of there respective orders. After the last desolation the oath-pact was broken and honorblades were abandoned. I always thought the remaining Heralds left and inevitably founded the silver kingdoms and lived out a mortal life and died. I never thought of them as ageless figuring their long life was tied to the blades that they abandoned. then the silver kingdoms broke down after the heralds died. soon then after the Radiants abandon the kingdoms which then cut Urithiru off from the world. Lots of gaps still like how/when were the plains shattered Please if there is evidence to the disprove this please let me know. I keep hearing that people think the heralds are ageless is that something Brandon had reveled? Edit note: crossed out dis proven information Edit note 2 altered per hoser's post: nodohan could have founded the radiants but shard blade still would have had to have been made by heralds. Shard blades were made to fight thunderclasts. something only heralds would have planned and even had the knowledge to make.

  9. Shard of Tipsiness - Alcohol-based magic. Different kinds of drinks give you different powers, and mixed drinks can do weird things - but if you pass out or get too drunk to do anything (or hit anyone) you're screwed in a fight. Some people are incredibly alcohol-resistant, chugging rum and whisky for pure power, while others less able to hold their drinks make up for it with original drink mixes and cocktails. The book would include a scene where the main character tries to take a swig of his 299 proof superpowered mixed drink to start knocking holes in mountains or something as a last resort, and - gasp - someone replaced it with non-alcoholic beer. Then he passes out from all the alcohol he already ingested during the preceding climatic extreme drinking contest with the big bad vodka superconglomerate CEO, and wakes up in a dungeon beneath the planets largest, highest security vodka distillery. The operation is in fact producing black-market non-alcoholic beer, which it is using to sabotage Alcomages everywhere. The Shardpool of Tipsiness is in fact a literal lake of Invested alcohol. It rains beer. There are ginmists, scotchstorms, and underground coffee rings. The Bartenders Union is second only to the Federated Distilleries in terms of political power. The religion is oriented around attaining a state of drunkenness so perfect that everything becomes clear, and the priests have a holy obligation to never be sober. Liver failure is unsurprisingly the foremost killer on the planet, even though through Tipsiness's shaping, their livers can handle many times what one of us could. Alcohol related birth defects don't happen for this reason as well. Strong Alcomages, or many weak ones working together, can turn literally anything into alcohol.

  11. I think what he meant was that there's a gigantic line of cracked rock right down the center of the fields. That area is now basically unfarmable. Really productive cropland generally needs to have deep soil, and efficient farming techniques require it be relatively flat. This does depend on the type of crop, but I expect that whatever the area previously grew is not even remotely suited to the new conditions.

  12. Lol no, he didn't unfortunately! He and Emily had fancy dinner plans It actually wasn't as bad as I expected. There was only 1 cosmere questioned asked/answered during the official Q&A, which was actually asked by Darnam's friend! (for which he was thrown a Steelhunt code from the stage!): Q: Does time flow at the same speed on all of your Shardworlds? A: Yes, the Cosmere's time flows, unless it is being manipulated by an outside force, at the same speed. I was able to get my phone placed next to Brandon for the signing, but they were pushing people through pretty fast, so I don't know how many good questions were asked. I am about to listen to and transcribe the signing, and will post the results in a new thread. I know that my question did get answered, and I think it was a doozy, but you will have to wait to hear it with the rest of the signing report... . EDIT: OMG Christopher Paolini is loud! He was sitting two chairs down from Brandon and is frequently drowning him out on the recording, even though the phone was RIGHT in front of Brandon!

  17. It was a long time ago. There are people with "aethers" in Liar, and someone said the magic system was cannibalized from Aether of Night. It sounded reasonable to me because it had the word "Aether" in it, but I've never read it so I don't know. Also no one actually uses the aethers in Liar because it's so short, so it's probably impossible to confirm or deny that it's the same magic.

  18. I know that crem most certainly collects, but it also washes away, dries and breaks up. It's certainly a part of the biosphere, insofar as various flora and fauna derive nutrients and extrude minerals from it... it's been theorized that this is how many rockbuds get their "rocky" bits and the reason chulls have giant boulder-shells, through a process in which the nutrients are extracted and the unusuable stuff is extruded through the skin or shell. I'm almost certain that it's one of the staples of diet for cremlings (hence the name). I don't know if there's a mystical source of it. I'm thinking not, but it might be... It's an interesting question, someone should ask Brandon.

  19. I don't really have much to contribute regarding the supply of atium, but I do want to comment on the theory that Tan was using electrum. Specifically, that #1) electrum is a known entity in Wax's time, and therefore would be known to Wax and, even if not anticipated, then at least recognized after the fact. More importantly, #2) electrum doesn't work that way. It lets you see your own future, and lets you see the results of various decisions that you might make. In Tan's case, it would have let him see that standing still would have gotten him shot. If Wax was anticipating him dodging, it might have let him see that dodging to the left would also have gotten him shot, but dodging to the right would have been safe. But it wouldn't have shown him the trajectory of Wax's bullet like atium would have, and it would not have shown him which way to move to get Wax to hit Lessie. I really don't see any allomantic explanation for what happened other than atium use.

  21. Thanks, guys! Sorry 'bout the late response, haven't had much time for art lately. D: @Shivertongue: Thank you! I'm glad to be here. @Windrunner: I'm probably happiest with Dalinar out of those portraits (pretty sure I spent the most time on it too) so it's cool to hear that it captures the character well. @Mailliw: My pleasure, thanks for taking the time to stop by and take a peek at my art! Kaladin was another character that I spent a lot of time on trying to nail down. @Feather: Oh no, I don't want to be responsible for making you expire from art-overload! xD And your lock-screen... that is awesome and flattering, dang. :X @Natans: Sweet, as that's the design I'm leaning most towards. Except probably with the higher vest neckline of the last 2, since exposing so much of the white shirt looks sparse without a tie of some sort... I definitely want to draw Kaladin in full uniform (perhaps with the rest of Bridge Four...?) at some point. Decided to start on another track of SA art - depicting Shardbearers, including both their blades and full plate. Which is slightly mad because I don't know the first thing about how to put together plate armor and haven't really delved into bladed weapons before. Oh well, that's what research is for... 'Ere are some sloppy initial sketches: Hopefully I'll have more and better stuff to share sooner rather than later.

  23. One of the things I see on this forum is that everyone seems to assume that the 10 Essences are linked to the 10 Orders of KR. You can see this because people post things along the lines of Kaladin's attributes are Protecting/Leading. Personally, I am inclined to believe that the Essences are linked to the Surges instead. That would make Kaladin Protecting/Leading/Just/Confident. The reason I believe they are linked this way instead of to the Orders is that each Order has 4 unique Ideals other than the First, and it makes sense to me that the 4 Ideals are derived from the 4 attributes of that Order's Surges. Other than that, I don't really have much to go on.

  24. It could be that spren are like Mistborn's metals to the Shards, and they're basically invisible and/or Honor couldn't 'replicate' them in the vision. This makes me wonder why the Radiant was able to speak to Dalinar. Surely Honor must have some issues with essentially creating then killing off masses of humans in visions? Or perhaps it wasn't a simulation, but an alternate past or something like what gold/malatium show and thus it wasn't 'real'? Hrm. This seems like a huge ethical issue for me all of a sudden. (Taravangian for world emperor! Honor kills off entire worlds, whilst Taravangian just kills off the terminally ill! Say no to Desolations and elect Taravangian today.)

  25. My main problem with thinking that Nicrosil stores investiture in the type that you are accessing while storing is that the Ars Arcanum states investiture (singular) for Nicrosil while it states senses and memories (both plural) for Tin and Copper which we know stores as distinct things. As such I think Nicrosil stores investiture as a kind of "raw" investiture without any kind of focus (health, weight, breath, ...). From that I would assume that the investiture you have stored could then be used to enhance whatever investiture you are currently using. Thus a full Feruchemist with access to Surgebinding could convert their investiture of a specific type (like their stored weight) into raw investiture, then later use that raw investiture to help fuel something like Surgebinding allowing them (if they have enough raw investiture) to double the amount of Stormlight that they can use. While this wouldn't let them store say Stormlight for use latter when they have no spheres to draw on, it does allow them to convert any type of investiture they have access to into another investiture they have access to at a later time.

  27. I have a different theory: Soulbearer Ferrings can store Investiture that has been applied to them in any of the three Realms by another magic user, and in doing so, the effects of that Investiture are eliminated immediately. Stuck to a wall with a Lashing from a Windrunner? Fill a Nicrosil metal mind and the Lashing dissipates. Receive a bunch of Breaths? Fill a Nicrosil metal mind and you lose whatever Heightening you gained. Find yourself being affected by emotional Allomancy? Fill a Nicrosil metal mind and your emotions return to normal. Given how little we know, it's certainly a possibility...

  28. Maybe more baseless speculation, than theory, since we don't have much evidence available here, but I've always wondered how Odium was responsible for the splintering of at least 3 shards. Honor, you can kind of understand, in that Odium spent a lot of time in the Rosharan system, and probably invested less of himself in the population than Honor did, or somehow got the better of Honor with the Oathpact. I guess we will find out in the Stormlight Archive. But Devotion and Dominion? He managed to splinter both of them, despite not being long on Sel (in relationship to his time in the Rosharan system, anyway). You would think Devotion and Dominion together could've beat Odium on their home turf. The most logical conclusion I can make is that Odium somehow was able to pit Devotion and Dominion against each other. They are not opposites in the manner of Ruin and Preservation, and may have some natural conflict, but I think that Odium (perhaps by his very nature, and/or by clever manipulation of world events) somehow amplified and/or set them against each other. Hoid's letter says that Aona and Skai are both dead, not that Odium killed them, which Hoid probably would've said outright, if it was true. Odium was responsible, but did not act directly against them (as he could not have overcome them directly, especially in so short a time on their homeground, given how long it took him to kill Honor). This could also have led to the split between Shu-Korath and Shu-Dereth. I realize that split occurred after the splintering, but the societal forces that Odium set in motion earlier could have made such a split inevitable, even far later in the timeline.

Do you realize what Jasnah can do if her spren is as talkative as Wyndle?! Researching the radiant powers + insight from her spren, I would say Jasnah could currently be more powerful and in control of her powers than anyone is giving her credit... Combined with her being an atheist going to see her beloved uncle that has visions from a dead Almighty and speaks the Dawnchant (which Navani said Jasnah would be the best to help in deciphering)... the possibilities... so exciting!

I don't think Brandon will ever publish an explicit sex scene, though who can say what the distant future holds... I just don't see it, given his personality and background. I doubt that he'll ever hit something like a Richard K. Morgan level of explicitness, and I expect we'll always "pan the camera away", so to speak. And I'm fine with that, because there are plenty of authors who are willing to go there already.

  38. OK, I talked to Brandon about the chart. He says that in the typical chaos of a signing, he didn't notice that the circles that were being pointed to sometimes weren't the ones he thought they were. Anyway here is what I have to say about the chart: Gravity and Pressure should be switched. The "surface tension" one should be switched with the unrevealed one next to it. Also, the in-world names for many of the Surges haven't yet been canonically revealed and may not ultimately match what's here. For example, where it says light, on my chart I have Illumination. The names of the Heralds are also a hodgepodge. Some of them are the ancient name, some are the Vorin name, and some are just the name of the number that corresponds to that Herald.

  42. I'm reading that the exact opposite way. Being Truthless is his punishment, and his punishment declares that they don't exist. I'm pretty sure this line will be a lot easier to understand once we know the back story that led from him being a respected member of Shin society to becoming Truthless. Clearly, he felt that his honor required him to take whatever action (perhaps murder?) led to his punishment, so the real question here is "Why does Szeth believe Voidbringers exist?" Not every man who picks up a weapon becomes Truthless, Szeth is a big step below normal Shin warriors. It would be funny if he's being punished for killing a Thunderclast. Since they're the stone product of Voidbringers, and it would be difficult for him to prove that he wasn't slashing at holy rocks for no good reason after it was dead. I don't think we'll be seeing Szeth's backstory until after Dalinar's and Shallan's, probably because it would give away too much too early.
