  1. This could also explain how Hoid is always able to communicate with the people of other Shardworlds.

  2. I would say complimentary properties rather than shared. For example, ruin wants to destroy, whereas cultivation wants to remove undesirable aspects of things and encourage desirable ones. Ergo, cultivation would be happy to allow ruin to destroy specific things.

  3. This theory was my attempt to salvage a hunch I had when reading the Liar of Partinel sample: that Midius was one of (the original) Hoid's illusions, and that Hoid faked his death. Since Hoid is an illusionist, him dying at the start of the book was "proof" he didn't die, on thematic grounds. Or so I'd like, except for the obvious, obvious problem that illusions are incorporeal. Instead, say the original Hoid forged his soul, convincing it he's actually a young apprentice Lightweaver, not the old master. This could have taken years, with Hoid maintaining the illusion of Midius so long that it took on a life of its own. Eventually there's no (original) Hoid left, only Midius, and Midius is using Hoid's body, which has become younger and changed. Midius experiences this as Hoid dying; Hoid would have experienced it as fading away. I don't think Hoid used Sel's Forgery, or a pre-Shattering equivalent. Forgery rewrites the past, and there's no plausible way to rewrite the past to make yourself younger. So Hoid used something else. Maybe Lightweaving alone is enough to do it; maybe it took a bit of something else. But the realmatics came out the same. Hoid convinced his soul he was someone else, and he became that person. Now for the interpretation of some quotes under this theory... This has a dual meaning. Midius didn't realize everything Hoid was doing for him (to create him) until later, and missed his chance to love him as something like a father. But also, Midius may morbidly wish that he'd loved himself a bit more as Hoid and never changed at all. He may feel guilty that he exists instead of Hoid. Thanks to TES, we know a way this can happen in the cosmere. The Emperor's replacement soul did start out as words on a page. But Hoid says he "stole himself", which is a bit more than just being born oddly. Maybe orignal Hoid only created the illusion as a companion to pass boredom, or as a lesson for another apprentice, not intending on going all the way to becoming it. But over time the illusion just became more compelling, and Hoid decided he preferred the fiction to the truth. In effect, the illusion stole control of itself from its maker. Alternately, maybe this is normal for Lightweavers. As they get older, they create more fictional apprentices until they find one they're happy with, then work on the slow process of becoming that new person. This would explain some of their eccentric reputation, and why they stick to storytelling instead of finding mundane ways to make money off Lightweaving: if they're born from fiction, they'd come to consider fiction a sacred calling. Also, learning to be better storytellers is really learning to be a better person in their next life, so of course it interests them. I'm being sneaky here, and guessing wildly, but isn't that an awfully intricate realmatic explanation to get into for just this novella? I think Brandon already had the realmatics worked out, and why work it out except to use it? If what's true for the Emperor is true for Hoid, this is telling us casting Dispel Magic (or the local equivalent) on Hoid won't turn him into a vegetable, a corpse, or his old identity. After a few years as Hoid, the identity is stable and no longer requires magic to maintain. And this may be a difference between magic systems. Forgery changes the soul suddenly, but requires daily stamping for years (at least) afterwards. If Lightweavers gradually feed more identity into an apprentice over the course of years, that may suffice for the "waiting period".

  4. Hey everyone, I have been following Brandon for years, since 07 at least. So I guess not too long but long enough. I have read almost all of his books. Just finishing up the last of the Alcatraz ones and a couple of short stories that I haven't gotten a hold of yet but lets just say that I am a fanatic. haha. I probably check his site every day to see if there is any new info up and mostly to see how far along his writing bars have gotten. 55% for WoK 2 . Got my wife addicted to him too. In the past year she has listened to me read the books or to the books on CD. I usually get both. Also got most of her family and mine reading all of his stuff. There is never too much that we can read from Brandon. Just curious though. Does he ever get on here and post under a pseudonym or something just to shake things up? that would be cool. If you're going to respond please leave 3 books for me to read. the last one you read the one you want to read next and your favorite book of all time please don't leave any Brandon books as I have them all already other authors would be appreciated. Thanks guys

  7. My obsessive compulsive self took over and I did a survey of the forum members: 1665: Adonalsium 274-476 Hero of ages 132-220: Shard 102-122: Splinter 77-97 Sliver 64-73 Worldhopper 50-62: Knight Radiant 40-49: Full Shardbearer 32-38 Shardbearer 24-31: Elantrian 17-23: Mistborn 10-16: Misting 5-9: Awakener -1 to 4: Trainee -4 to -2: Lamespren I couldn't fill in all the gaps. Maybe administrators have a handy list somewhere . . . Edit: Just being OCD and filling in a couple numbers.

  8. See, this disagreement comes from us appreciating different aspects of Brandon's worldbuilding. I love the magical aspects, things like that are wonderful. But I also love cultural things like Aon constellations. They make so much sense and are wonderfully clever, not mundane at all in my opinion. Just another aspect of Brandon's creativity. I think if everything had a magical explanation, that in and of itself would make it all feel mundane.

  9. Actually, unlike many, Warbreaker was my second favorite cosmere book that Sanderson has done, so I personally would like to see Nightblood. But, I am all for the next Mistborn series, though 20th century anything does not do as much for me.

  10. Hi guys! Quick intro: I've been reading Brandon's books for about a year, and a few months ago I noticed some stuff about his novels. I googled "Hoid" and "Adonalsium" and holy crap what did I find! It felt like I took a bead of what I now know is called "lerasium". So anyway, I had tried to read up on stuff on this forum and coppermind, etc, but I am still behind on knowing everything that's ever been asked/revealed. That in mind, I went to a signing he had tonight in Milford NH (middle of nowhere, right?) and asked him some questions. I also asked if I could post the answers he gave me online, and am respecting his wishes as to what can be said. While there I also met another Sanderson nerd (San-nerd-son?) who I discussed some things with to get his view. I had a list of questions and wrote down Brandon's answers. Forgive me if any of them have already been answered ... It took me 2 turns through the line to get all my questions answered. All statements are approximations and not direct quotes. Me: Hi Brandon. Thanks for this ... I have like a billion questions so I'll go through the line as many times as needed to ask them all. Brandon Sanderson: No problem. Why don't we try to answer some now? Me: Hah. So in Cosmere, does physics work the same way in the physical realm as it does in our world? Specifically, particle physics; and are atoms made up of protons and neutrons and electrons, and is light photons, etc? BS: Yes Me: So what's at the core of an atom of Atium? Ate-teum? Also how do you pronounce it? At-teum? BS: Yes. And the matter is just normal matter, but it's wrapped in the spiritual. The Spiritual DNA [or something] is what makes it magical. (note: he might've said slightly more about this but I didn't write it down and I don't remember. Sorry for not bringing a tape recorder :(/> ) Me: Ok. The gemhearts/stormgems/whatever that are grown inside the beasts in way of kings ... is that the same as the way Atium is grown inside geodes in the Pits of Hathsin? BS: It's similar. The pits are an area where there's like a leak from the spiritual realm into the physical. That's what happens there Me: Ok real quick then I'll get back in line again. There's a bunch of people who follow this stuff online ... I just found out about it ... I don't want to call them a cult, but ... So anyway, at one point someone asked you if Seons were shards of - BS: Aona Me: Devotion ... yeah Aona, and you said that was close. My question is: are the Aons at the HEART of the Seons shards of Devotion? BS: No, but close. Me: But ... I was sure ... the floating Aon at the heart, that's not a shard ... BS: (taking pity on me) You're close but a word is wrong. You're using the wrong terminology. Me: SPLINTER. Are the Aons at the heart of Seons SPLINTERS of Aona? BS: Yes. - !!!!!! Me: Can I post that online? BS: ... Ok. That's fine. It's been long enough, they've earned it. ... Then I waited around 2 hours for another turn, this time with the other dude & his girlfriend. There was another girl there too, so the 4 of us were asking him questions. I don't remember any questions other than the ones I came up with, so they'll have to chime in with the questions they had. Me: Aons look like Arelon; soulstamps look like MaiPon. Aons get weaker when you get further from Arelon, right? That's not just cause Elantris acts like a focus? BS: That's right, it's based on distance. That's why there are no stamped objects in Elantris. Me: So do soulstamps get weaker further from MaiPon? If you left Sel via Shadesmar and went to another planet, would the soulstamp stop working? BS: That's correct. Me: Could soulstamps be carved that used Arelon as a base form instead of MaiPon? BS: That's very interesting, isn't it? Me: You said that the Pits are a leak from the spiritual into the physical - BS: A necessary leak. Me: Ok. Are the spren a similar leak but from the Cognitive? BS: The next book is going to explore the spren a lot further. Me: Wyrn can see into the future ... is he a follower of Dominion or of Odium? Cause Dominion is shattered, so ... BS: Dominion. Me: Are we going to find out soon if the Parshendi are actually of Honor? BS: Yes. (You'll find out) Me: Hoid has a nugget of Lerasium and the Moon Scepter. Does he have a Breath. BS: It seems quite likely that he would. Me: This will probably be RAFO'd, but: Is Szeth bound to a spren? BS: No. He's not. Haha, I didn't RAFO that. - !!!!! Me: Question about timelines - Was Honor splintered BEFORE or AFTER the day of recreance? BS: You know, I'm going to RAFO that for now. That was all that we asked him ... he seemed tired, so we didn't want to push it. Afterwards, I still had a few questions, but I didn't want to be an cremhole to him. My theory now involves Szeth being bound to his oathstone the way Kaladin is bound to Syl; I believe Honor was splintered near Urithiru (which was build "to the west, near Honor"), and I believe that this may have been in Shinovar. That's how he learned the lashings, etc. But we'll see. Ok, that's it for now. I'll let you know if I remember anything else ... Peace. ~Viper.

  11. Ah, but think of the lovely conversations you'd be having. Nightblood and Ruin on a conference call. "Kill everyone." "Oh boy oh boy! Let's go and do that! Kill everyone!" "Stop copying me." "No, you stop copying me." "Nah uh" "Yah uh" "Nah uh" "Yah uh" ...

  12. I was fortunate to be in line at Brandon's book signing near Baltimore and got to ask him a question. I asked him if it was possible to enter or exit Shadesmar in interplanetary space. He laughed nervously for several seconds with a look that suggested "Uh-oh!" and replied (as best as I can remember): I also referenced the recent Q&A and this post, and speculated that the reason why the original poster thought Wax's sister was a duralumin ferring was because of Wax's comment that he did not feel any strong emotions as a result of her death. I told Brandon that the poster must have thought that she was deliberately suppressing her Connection with Wax by using Feruchemy. I said that I didn't need a yes or no answer from him, and he replied that he would neither confirm nor deny my statement and would only agree that it was very interesting.

  13. This is due to the nature of Feruchemical healing and one's Cognitive aspect. It repairs your body to the state you see yourself (and possibly how others seeyou) as being. So if you lost your arm many years before you found out you were a Bloodmaker, and got used to not having an arm, when you tapped health that arm would not grow back. It's the same reason Sazed can't heal himself from being a eunuch, it's become a part of his identity. Miles' hair and nails will return to the length that he sees himself as having.

  14. So for the past few years, Theoryland and 17th Shard have been making seperate reports, for seperate signings, with quite a bit of information being double covered. Theoryland decided that they were tired of making two separate databases, Terez's Interview Database, and my Brandonothology (which has always been fairly rough). So we worked together, transcribing interviews, collecting signing reports, and put it in a beautiful actual database, containing all of Brandon's and Robert Jordan's signings, reports, Q&As and interviews This thing- man, it's fantastic. It has searching (which is fast as lightning), tags for common subjects (from Atium to Brandon on Writing), and over 700 reports. Yeah, it's pretty amazing. And the formatting is really nice, consistent, and I believe we plan on using this for years to come Marie and Terez from Theoryland have done an incredible amount of work, and have spent probably hundreds of hours on this project. They are amazing, and should be thanked for their hard work. Oh, I guess I should probably link you to it, huh? The Interview Database Note- Right now, it is mainly WoT, which makes sense since It's been around for 20 years, while Brandon's been around for only 10. Hopefully, with your guys' help, we can help tip the balance. Whenever you go to a signing or a Q&A, or find a video online that we don't have on here, post it in the Events, Signings, and Stalkings section of the forums. It's also still in Beta, so there are some bugs being worked out. But they're being worked on! And eventually, we hope to put more information on this, including better tags and all of Brandon's annotations. But go! Check it out! EDIT- If you have any comments on it, whether it's things you wish it had, or things that seem wrong, or any typos, let us know about them.

  15. 1. Not sure of the specifics, but anyone with Plate and Blade should be nearly invincible except to an experienced dual Shard holder. 2. The Thrill. Think of it the way people play GTA, seemingly infinite power against pedestrians and some small time Cops, a bit of mayhem can be fun. Add to this the Thrill that creeps into (at least) the Shardbearers, and I could easily see someone wading into a battle swinging their mist sword around, killing scores of infantry, wearing their magic armor regardless of their original mission.

  16. It's amazing the things you pick up the second time through. For instance, I just noticed that Elhokar shows signs of being a soulcaster! From chapter 58 (page 826): Compare that to the creatures that Shallan draws just before she soulcasts for the first time (Chapter 45, page 643): Also, since it seems likely that powers run in families (like mistborn, plus Hoid mentions that there is some reasoning to the establishment of lighteyed aristocracy), and Jasnah (Elhokar's full sister) is a soulcaster, the only explanation I can think of is that Elhokar has the potential to become a soulcaster. Which leaves me wondering--how much of the Alethi aristocracy has the potential powers of Radiants? Or is soulcasting completely separate from the radiants, and just an ability passed down in certain families?
