The Splintercast Reads Words of Radiance, Episode 26: Chapters 85-87

It's a horrible, horrible thing to keep you waiting, so here's a Splintercast very early Wednesday. In fact, you've waited for this moment since you first heard Alyx's rampant Shallan/Renarin shipping. You've waited as she gets more tired, more emotional, and goes deeper into the depths. Prepare yourself for the breakdown and the rest of the amazing climax. (It happens early in 86, by the way...)

The journey ends Friday, and then there will be an extensive, hour long wrap-up podcast. We're almost done with this sequence of Splintercasts. Can you believe it?

The "Glimpse of Feather" I wish I could have sent back to past-Feather before she read WoR: "Featherwriter then cried out, rage in her voice, 'Shallan, I'm going to murder you!'"

This stands as the best argument I have seen for not shipping :P

Could not have possibly said it better myself. I'll never really understand shipping.

Am I the only one surprised by how well Feather held that together?  I wasn't expecting her to be able to keep on reading right away!

Possible the best quote ever:  "I'm sorry I tried to set you up with her"  :-)

Yeah Feather didn't explode as much as I thought she would. Well done.

I agree this proves the flaws with shipping. Feather saw Shallan as a kind person but her kindness only came through in calmer moments. In times of crisis (killing Tyn and killing her father) Shallan was always described as cold and calculating. A person like that would demand any voice that spoke against her success to shut up. Now that they are both known radients and in a calmer situation at Urithiru they might have a kinder relationship.

Or maybe they won't.

The truth is Renarin needs someone more emotionally stable than Shallan. Maybe he should avoid dating radients all together.

This is why I'm not a shipper...

On another note, to cheer past Feather up, it would make for an interesting potential relationship between the two of them, both being rather unstable, if Shallan apologized to Renarin and then a thing happened that was similar to what happened between Kaladin and Adolin.

Way ahead of you, friend.

As far as the question of 'to ship or not to ship' goes - it's not some people's thing, and that's fine.  Those of us who do enjoy it enjoy the emotional ups and downs as part of the experience!  Kinda like how some people love scary movies or roller coasters for the simulated thrills, and others can't stand 'em.  To each their own.

I'm saddened to hear that this is somewhat driving people away from shipping, since shipping is so much of how I appreciate a work. No risk, no reward I guess. Yeah, you could get torn up by a pairing but it's so amazing while you're working with it and the friends you make during it all, and in the event that your pairing does or doesn't become canon, well, it's worth the celebration or heartbreak on the other side.

And for those who have been tracking me saying "I had some friends who helped me through it..." Well, Kogi was one of those friends and she wrote me lovely fic even though Shallarin isn't her ship because she knew I was upset and now I'm getting sappy because my friends are so wonderful and nice to me and she's sitting right beside me so I think I'm probably going to hug her. Yep. Definitely doing that right now.

(If you'd like to see/read my reaction to that fic, it's over here and it's both very personal to me and very close to my heart: http://renarinkholin.tumblr.com/post/82794324050/kogiopsis-so-i-wrote-a-thing-for-feather )

My comment was mostly a joke :) I view shipping in a similar manner to how I view romantic relationships in general. I can understand what people get out of it, but having considered the advantages and disadvantages I concluded that I have other priorities.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy seeing relationships in a book. I just don't always look for them, and I'm usually fine with whoever ends up with whoever. I just don't go...(don't want to say crazy...but... it is what it is) crazy over them. :) It is enjoyable, though.
