Shardcast: The Stormlight Love Triangle

This week on Shardcast we will have a nice, leisurely, not at all contentious podcast... Just kidding, we're talking about the Love Triangle in Stormlight Archive with Shallan, Adolin, and Kaladin. We fully expect to have a lot of discord in the comments! Do note that we are talking about our personal opinions and points of view. We do hard to discuss all aspects of the love triangle, but if you disagree, please tell us why below!

We have a bit of a different crew today: Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Alyx (FeatherWriter), and joining us for the first time is Matt (Comatose), as well as Shannon (Greywatch).

This week has our longest Shardcast yet, so enjoy (or hate) it. We discuss depression, romance, and more. You'll get all the theorizing and character analysis here on Shardcast. Also, we wage war against Alyx's expensive mic that buzzes when she talks. 10/10!

Thanks for a great episode. I loved the section on the bromance particularly.  I love the scenes with Adolin and Kaladin, but having you put them all together by you all reminded me what a fantastic job Brandon did with their friendship arch. And I am also very relieved that the triangle didn't end up breaking up the bromance!

My take on it is BS wouldn’t put so much foreshadowing in these books if something wasn’t going to happen between Kaladin and Shallan. I don’t think a wedding that was glossed over unlike Dalinar and Navani would put a end to the possibility. Now am not saying Kaladin will marry Shallan but something will happen he purposefully glanced over many interactions between the two that could have taken place. Book four will take place a year or so after book three supposedly the same is true of book 5, and book 6 will take place 10-15 years later so obviously if they did get together in would be in that period or later on in book 6-10. I think the only reason myself included that we push Kaladin and Shallan so much is Kaladin is really never seen interacting with any other women. He has a ton of foreshadowing with her, but I wouldn’t mind if he got with Azure or Jasnah either the important thing to me if his character is happy. Same with Shallan, I don’t really care if she’s stays with Adolin or breaks up and later on decides she does love him and goes back. Dalinar is Kaladin he will go on and get his own wife and Shallan might even give birth to Adolin children but nothing is set in stone till book 9-10.

I have been thinking exactly the same thing! What Shallan has sounds more like an extreme coping mechanism - like a stage actor "getting lost" in a role to deal with things they can't deal with in real life. Everyone does this to some extent, and it's not unhealthy - remember the song "Whenever I Feel Afraid" from The King and I, or the business saying, "Fake it till you make it." Sometimes we act confident, then confidence springs up within us because we've made a space for it. Shallan's behavior is much more extreme, but IMO it's along these lines, not MPD. (I really hope Brandon didn't think he was writing about MPD; he's usually better informed than that about things that are way more obscure ... re: the map of Roshar, cymatics, etc.)

Weather of not a behavior is healthy or not is subjective.
