Shardcast: The Singers

Chaos
 Share

This week on Shardcast, we discuss the singers. Who are the singers (also called the parsh), their background, and their forms. We talk about Rlain's absence, and, of course, the constant discussion of the Everstorm.

We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and Grace (thegatorgirl). Send big thanks to Jebus for editing this episode. Send your Who's That Cosmere Characters to [email protected].

Shinovar is basically aSHYN NOVAr (meta), Shinovar is new Ashyn. Maybe Shin Kak Nish translates to new Ashyn or Land of the Ashyn (in world).

The Everstorm being old in design, I think that has something to do with Odium may be slightly vulnerable because he has to steer it. So he dropped the design and decided to make the Unmade instead to command, confuse, destory and more.

Fun episode! Thanks for your hard work!

Another fun talk. A random thought I had during the Listener forms section: did/does Sja-anat "Enlighten" the types of spren Listeners invite into their gemhearts, and if so, what is the effect?

I just want to thank you guys for doing these. Since I've had to become an almost inactive Sharder, an hour a week is a great way to stay in touch with new WoBs, hear good discussions of specific subjects and feel like a member of the community again as I yell at my phone (typically in support of Ian or Evgeni and against Eric or Ben :D).

So thanks for all the effort you take (especially you Eric), I'm seriously glad you have kept up the weekly episodes for so long.

As always, guys this was great! It's so easy to read the books and get lost in only your interpretation. It's great to have a "book discussion" and hear other people's interpretation! So I wanted to say a couple of things: 1. Listener rhythms; I think they do have a spiritual component to it, like, I believe, @WeiryWriter said however, (I think this was mentioned) I think it's more physical than anything else. We know the Parshendi are important to the ecosystem of Roshar. Notice there isn't another lifeform mentioned as important ( we of course know life is important for a planet, but you know). Nature I think even on Earth has it's own rhythms, that sometimes you can hear if you are silent or pay attention enough. I've always imagined the Listeners to be specially attuned to nature through almost another sense, i.e. they have taste, smell, etc., and attunement. 2. I find it interesting that Roshar as a planet has a high oxygen environment and Roshar everything is just bigger in general, minus I guess the humans living in Shinovar. A Rosharan year and foot is longer than the Cosmere standard. So, the humans that live on Roshar have evolved to the point physically and elsewise, that at this point they are Rosharan. There are many groups of people on our world that say live in the mountains and through a couple generations, they have physically adapted to that climate. I also find it interesting that Khriss mentions that on Roshar, the relationship between humans and spren are quite dramatic, just like everything else on Roshar. So, I think that, hopefully, not too soon, we'll see the Parshendi, Listeners, and Humans manage to live together without killing each other. I can't see the exile of one of these species from the planet as viable, where would they go? To the firey hell of Ashyn or the cold hell of Braize. Both suck and hopefully eventually they come to a peaceful resolution. (The conflict/buildups are the best part of the story of course!) 3. The impression I got from the Desolations, the little we know, we almost distractions, so Odium could do his thing? Like the bigger picture is not the conflict between Listeners and Humans. If that makes sense, it's just shards are so hard to read! Also I'm so curious to see what Cultivation's role in this is going to be!! I guess, I'm trying to say is are these Desolations, these conflicts just a distraction? 4. I think humans are so pervasive throughout the Cosmere is because Adonalsium and then the concurrent 16 Vessels knew what the blueprint of a human was, so why not use that? Also if the Herdazians are any indication, humans are very hardy, able to withstand much, and able to breed with other "humanoid" type species. It's our superpower, at least according to many fantasy/sci-fi books! 5. I love that the Listeners are so musical! Their songs and they way they pass down information is really neat, as well as their forms! That blew my mind when I first read that, I literally couldn't comprehend that for a couple of minutes. 6. Who else is excited to see how the politics play out on Roshar with the Parshendi taking cities and forming their own government? That intrigues me. Like imagine a meeting between Queen Jasnah and a Parshendi king? Right? 7. Lastly,  what I love, especially, about Stormlight, is that, at least for me, I immediately sympathized with humans, I'm a human, why not be team human. The Parshmen are almost background noise for a little bit in Way of Kings, so they are easy to ignore. Than we move along throughout the story and than turns out humans were the bad guys? Or at least weren't totally innocent. The Parshendi and the Listeners you almost start to sympathize with them super quickly. They are so nice as to give humans refuge they stab them in the back (which says a lot about human nature). There are no "bad" and "good" guys, no black and white. It's complicated, just like life here. Anyways, sorry this is so long. You guys are awesome, but next time do a Listener podcast with the Rhythms! ;D

If Horneaters are a mix between Humand and Dingers, then could a Horneater become a fused?

Who are these Dingers, lol. To become a Fused, don't you need a gemheart? If so, do Horneaters have gemhearts? Rock, I believe formed Nahel bond with his honorspren, but he didn't do that through a gemheart right? I could totally be wrong though.

Is anyone else having trouble listening to the podcast?  I can't pull up any episodes in my player, for something like 4 days now.  (Other podcasts play just fine.)

What player? They are all on the RSS feed: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:102123174/sounds.rss and they are appearing iTunes for me, but I'm happy to take a look.

@Mason Wheeler can you listen to the podcast on YouTube? I haven't had any issues, but if it is your player, SoundCloud or YouTube would be the way to go.

As in the podcast player app on my phone.

What type of phone and what app? What type of issues? Most apps require the use of your phone's internal media player.

I had a similar issue, so I just started streaming the episode in the browser. But since a phone update it works fine for now. My problems were if it was interrupted via phone call or paused and then restarted it would cause it to replay from the beginning.

Using Podcast Addict on a Blackberry KeyOne phone running Android 7.1.1.

I just downloaded Podcast Addict and found Shardcast and it has all the episodes there. I don't know what to tell you there.

I use Podcast addict too. It relies on your phone's internal media player. My phone bugged up with Shardcast too, but played it. You'll have to report the issue to Blackberry and hope they fix it in a future update. But we've found a workaround till then!

Wait, what? That seems insane.

That does not seem like a good app.

I can see all the episodes; I just can't actually play them.  I hit Play and it says "connecting to feeds.soundcloud.com" (or whatever the server name is) forever until I hit cancel.

It works now! And I was able to stream the show in my browser when the app didn't work. If your phone's internal media player is VLC it'll play any file. If not, you may be screwed. There are some apps that are a media player AND update the podcast feeds. But there's issues that:

1) Not free or if free they will interrupt your shows with ads

2) Obviously uses more memory because it's loading it's own media player

3) Confusing User Interfaces

I use podcast addict because it's free, incredibly simple to add shows or update my feed (I'm subscribed to 33 podcasts for entertainment while working), can link to iTunes or stitcher, and no ads. It may sound bad to you but it's actually one of the best podcast apps in the Google store. When I was struggling with the show I messaged the app producers and got an answer in 2 hours. Google play podcasts isn't great, FYI.

I guess you didn't do a close enough reading to see the subtle hints of a Dinger population beneath Aimia.
