Shardcast: Sja-anat and Voidbinding

Chaos

We're back with more Oathbringer discussion, and this time, we have a spicy topic: Sja-anat and Voidbinding. There's obviously heavy Oathbringer spoilers here (with some minor discussion from Hero of Ages), so be warned. We're here to talk about the Unmade, corrupted spren, Voidbinding, and more--though maybe we end up confusing ourselves more than anything.

We record these in advance, so we talk about the "news" of the new Secret Project. Brandon recently said that it is not cosmere, so our speculation is all worthless. But, I thought some Hemalurgy puns (nailed it) were funny, so I kept that in.

Today we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), David (Windrunner), and Alyx (FeatherWriter). Also starring in today's episode is my inconsistent pronounciation of Sja-anat, so I'm sure none of you will be triggered by that, right? Right?

I suspect Amaram switched sides when he got caught out in the Everstorm traveling between the war camps and the Oathgate to Uirithiru. It is mentioned early in Oathbringer that he was caught out in the Everstorm, was injured from it and spent a week or so recovering in his quarters once he got to the city. I think Ialai Sadeas mentions this in the meeting with Adolin and Shallan.

About Voidbinding -  there is this WoB about the number of voidspren: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/176/#e8462

I would tend to think that Khriss and the in-world Voidbinding chart are wrong with the number 10 (in-world the reason for this could be the influence of Vorin culture and their obsession with the number 10). Here my musings about Voidbinding:
First we have the Fused - cognitive shadows taking bodies from Singers - who use Voidlight to access surges. If it uses Voidlight, it should be called Voidbinding. The Fused are given access to the Surges through Connection to Odium, perhaps comparable to the Heralds with their direct Connection to Honor.
Second we have the Regals, Singers with a form of Power, who have captured a Voidspren in their gemhearts. Most likely there are nine varieties of them, and they also should need some form of Investiture to do their funk. Voidlight is just quite invisible (dark violet glow should be nearly invisible in daylight if it's not concentrated in a sphere that seems to suck in the light around it and if the Regal does not use too much of it), so we haven't seen them use Voidlight, yet. The Regals would correspond to the KR, who also access the Surges through spren.
Ba-Ado-Mishram probably has found a way to provide the Forms of Power and access to Voidbinding without the captured voidspren - perhaps creating voidspren of herself. Re-Shephir also is able to split off Midnight Essences as separate entities, so BAM might also be able to do this.
Third there is Renarin, who voidbinds because he has bonded a corrupted Nahel spren. Renarin uses Stormlight, so we have a hack of the magic system here. What Renarin does, definitely is not typical for Voidbinding. It's more like Vasher feeding on Stormlight instead of Breaths.

Last there are the first humans who came from Ashyn. They were called Voidbringers by the native Singers. Their Surgebinding would have been some form of Voidbinding, since their old God was Odium. How they got access to the surges, I have no clue to.

I can't be the only one who read the Fused salute to Renarin as "Ya got guts, kid. We'll kill you quick."

@Child of Honor, Amaram during his fight with Kaladin implies he's been talking to Odium for years. I don't think he ever switched sides, I don't think he was ever on humanities side (But wasn't aware of it).

Nice catch on the salut, didn't notice that myself.

Random Voidbinding chart fact related to Truthwatchers you guys missed. Unlike the other orders, neither Truthwatchers or Bondsmiths have lines connecting the order symbol to the surges on the chart. It could just be stylistic, but it is far more interesting to speculate that it is because of their abilities.

Time to test this

Love a Renarin heavy ep! I have to agree with @FeatherWriter on illumination. I think he is has progression, illumination and the void surge. Mainly because the light he makes when battling the Thundercaste sounds like what Ym's non-corrupted Truthwatcher spren wanted him to make. But I also think that it sets up something really facinating if he does because if illumination is of honour (I am not sure) then Renarin could have surges for all the Rosharian shards. Which would have to be significant.

I do suspect that the fused recognised Renarin as a fellow void-binder. The how is the interesting question.

I don't think that Sja-anat ever really implies that she wants to be on the side of Honor or Cultivation. I think that she helped the mission group escape because she likes Shalan in particular, perhaps because Shalan's damaged mental state is somehow connecting her to the unmade.

A simple explanation for the discrepancies in Voidbinging:

I don't know how it worked in the ancient, first desolation, but in the past desolations, it seems likely that human void binding was achieved by humans bonding with Void Spren.

The Fused use voidbinfing naturally as part of their nature as Odium corrupted cognitive shadows.

Renarin is something new, a Radiant who has access to both surgebinding and Voidbinding due to his bond to a corrupted Truthwatcher Nahel Spren.

He gets progression and maybe illumination from Surgebinding, and Illumination and maybe progression from Voidbinding. It's possible his progression is especially strong because he is doubling up with Void and surge binding

Guys, I disagree the Fused landed and saluted Renarin because they recognize Glys is corrupted. I feel this was just them acknowledging him and kinda being like, "Hello child, come to die?"

While fighting on the Shattered Plains before Eshonai saluted to Dalinar and I believe when Kaladin jumped in to fight they also nodded like, "Well, you have powers. We have numbers and Warform. Let's do this then, we look forward to a quality fight."
