Shardcast: Secret Societies of Roshar

You've asked for an introduction and analysis of the Secret Societies of Roshar, and so here we are. There are Oathbringer spoilers, but we'll talk about the Ghostbloods, the Sons of Honor, the Diagram, the Skybreakers, and several worldhopping organizations too. We also discuss how dumb some of their plans are. And we also talk about Tezim a lot. Hilariously, Ian's power went out as we first tried recording this podcast. These secret societies don't want this information out! Or something.

Today we have Eric (Chaos), a crazy Diagramist. We also have Ian (WeiryWriter), a crazy Ire, and lastly, we have Alyx (FeatherWriter), a crazy Skybreaker. Yup, we've all sworn the oaths.

You can submit your Who's That Cosmere Character to [email protected]

Sorry it's so late. It's been a really busy week, rather unexpectedly.

I think Iyatil's job as babsk is mostly limited to off-world things. Mraize can make decisions by himself while on Roshar, but he listens to her while off-world.

Seeing Kaladin use Stormlight and surges pushed the listeners into taking up stormform, so maybe that's the reasoning behind Nale's flawed logic.

You guys didn't include Worldsingers on your list of potential secret societies?

Here's what I got from this podcast:

  • Sons of Honor- Start the Desolation to bring back the Heralds. Worst plan ever.
  • The Diagram- Negotiate with Odium. Worst plan ever.
  • Skybreakers- Listen to an insane Ishar. Worst plan ever.
  • Envisagers- Try to kill yourself to become Knights. Worst plan ever.

"That's an interesting thing that we know nothing about, still." --every Sanderfan ever

On the vein of Ishar's craziness.... Odium treats Dalinar as though he can speak for the human race as a Bondsmith. Perhaps Ishar (as the patron of the Bondsmith order) saw himself as somehow able to rewrite the way the Oathpact works (even though that's somewhat ridiculous). And by Oathpact, I mean more than just the Hearlds and Braize, but the whole of the Desolations and the agreement between Honor and Odium.

Re Diagramists: I don't like the idea that he made the Diagram strictly from brain power. I really like the idea that Cultivation herself had a hand in creating the Diagram, and is using Taravangian as a pawn against Odium. If Odium begins trusting in the Diagram, Cultivation could have put in some flaw to catch and trap him.

I feel like the Envisagers get kind of a bad rap, their idea isn't THAT bad. They definitely go a little bit too far, but the basic plan is pretty much the Cosmere standard for how you manifest magical powers. Generally, you need to be broken and on Scadrial they do basically the same thing - they beat their kids half to death to see if they'll manifest allomancy. It obviously doesn't pan out well for team Envisager, but I feel like they're not that far away from a good plan.

Yeah I find it hard to believe that it was all brain power. Like they say in the podcast, Taravangian must've been incredibly well-informed to make all these logical leaps. Doesn't he predict that one of the Unmade is likely to betray Odium? How could he possibly have figured that out at the time of the Diagram's writing?

Heck yes, it's an amazing font. It's actually the new font they use for Stormlight books, so it's the one on the Oathbringer cover. (Although their graphic designers stretched it a bit.)

It's called Poetica Roman Small Caps. Though maybe I shouldn't reveal such cool stuff ;)

Ghost Bloods

Ghost = Cognitive Shadow

Blood = Hemalurgy

Therefore Hemalurgic Cognitive Shadow group = Kelsier's secret group

Thank you! ^_^

I... have issues with how they formatted Oathbringer. But that's a story for another day. ;)

ETA: And of course now I can't find the same version of it that you guys used. :P

Looking forward to the podcast! I know it's something you folks hear too often, but is there a timetable on when Shardcast will be posted to any of the common podcast hosts? I'd love to be able to subscribe in a proper podcast app. The Soundcloud app is not my favorite, and it does a crummy job of keeping track of location if I need to stop and re-start.

@Syldaras From what we can tell, it is available on most podcasting apps! Is there one you use in particular that it isn't appearing on?
