Shardcast: Keeping Up With The Kholins (Dalinar, Evi, and Navani)

We're back with Keeping Up With The Kholins, and this time we are talking about Dalinar's side of the family, and Dalinar's adult relationships, like Evi and Navani. It's a great wholesome experience except for all the horrible stuff. Nothing a bit of amnesia can't fix! Also, this episode features fantastic Shardcast Relationship Tips(tm), and literally the... best voice acting you'll ever hear. (Oh, there's also a lot of good character analysis.)

We have Eric (Chaos, and best voice actor NA), Alyx (FeatherWriter), Shannon (Grey, and feels ash), and making his Shardcast debut is Joshua (jofwu) who unfortunately is on the podcast just to get steamrolled by Alyx and Shannon. But I think he did great, and you'll see him more!

Next week, we will finish up Keeping Up With The Kholins with talking about Adolin and Renarin. This was supposed to be a surface level analysis, and here it took four episodes. Oops.

Eric, I think your rendition of Dalinar might have topped the Warbreaker audiobook's Lightsong voice actor for most.....creative interpretation of the character's voice. Congratulations ;)

Did anyone else hear Chaos say how Evi "tried so hard" and immediately think, "and got so far, but in the end, it didn't even matter"? :P

Literally one of the most quotable Shardcasts yet. And now my member title is "ignite them"

I literally thought this when I was editing! It was almost tempting to edit it in :)

I was just thinking of that yesterday. I really loved how he did Nightblood's voice, Michael Kramer, Kate Reading and Alyssa Bresnahan do a fine job, but their Nightblood is not as fun as his. He really nailed the balance of overflowing positivity and creepiness. But Lightsong ... oh boy.  Surf's up dude!!

I think "matched in temperament" was meant as Dalinar and Evi complimented each other. I don't think it's a retcon, the information we get in WoK is consistent with what we see in OB.  In WoK Dalinar is spoken of as having had a bad temper, a fearsome warrior who would challenge anyone to a duel on the spot if they insulted him and Evi is described as very kind.

That said it is shocking to see how cruel he was to her at times. The most painful flashback in OB that I skip on rereads is not her death, but when she shows up at the warcamp with Adolin and he screams at her "what are you doing here?!".  We knew she died a violent death relatively young, but that she was so unappreciated and unhappy breaks my heart.

OMG the voices, lol!

I really agreed with Shannon about Dalinar. I never understood the people that were upset over Dalinar's flashbacks. Everyone said he was a terrifying warrior and would pretty much stop at nothing. Suddenly it's shown and people think, "Woah, not cool!"? I didn't get it. It's a bad comparison, but reminded me of when the NFL didn't suspend Ray Rice over knocking out his fiancee until the video surfaced. Suddenly it's not ok because you saw him punch her? What did you expect?

I like Alyssa's Nightblood the best by far. Michael's came across as almost goofy to me. Alyssa's is more childlike.

But I'm confused by the Lightsong comment. Alyssa's Lightsong didn't have the surfer dude Lightsong. That was the other version of the audiobook, by some other guy, from what I understand.

That's what I was saying I didn't remember the name of the first narrator so I just said he. "He really nailed the balance of overflowing positivity and creepiness. But Lightsong ... oh boy.  Surf's up dude!!"

It is heart-breaking that Evi died so young after a miserable life. But I am still holding out hope for some happy moments with her boys during Renarin's flash-backs. Seeing her through his eyes is one of the (many) things I am looking forward to in that book.

I really loved listening to the shardcast. Stumbled across it yesterday after searching YouTube for podcasts ok on shards. Is it preferred to comment in the shardcast here or on YouTube?

Thanks. I posted on YouTube but realised my account name isn't my 17S name. I was generally sharing my thoughts on what was said.

I feel I've fallen down the rabbit hole in joining the forum and watching the shardcast but I'm loving it.
