White Sand Graphic Novels Announced!

Big news today: White Sand, an unpublished cosmere novel, is going to become a three part graphic novel series, the first coming out next year.

White Sand was the first novel Brandon ever wrote, and he eventually did a complete rewrite of it around the time of Elantris. That version of White Sand was good enough for Brandon to get his agent, though they decided to submit other works instead. White Sand was to be the first in a planned trilogy, but Brandon was never satisfied with how the plot turned out originally, but we now we'll finally get to see it and its world.

From the announcement:

A brilliant, new fantasy world, White Sand is split into two halves: on one side are the Daysiders, and on the other the Darksiders. Daysiders have a unique ability to control and manipulate sand, bending it to their will to attack, or protect, as they wish. Darksiders have their own unique abilities and culture, and must wear thick dark lenses while on the Dayside. Generally speaking, Daysiders and Darksiders do not get along...and White Sand follows the adventures of one particular Daysider, a boy named Kenton.

Aside from this, we have had references to Taldain (the planet in the cosmere where White Sand takes place) before. We know that Bavadin, a person who holds a Shard that was mentioned in the Letter in The Way of Kings, is in fact a Shard that exists on Taldain. It is possible we have seen characters from White Sand as worldhoppers as well.

It isn't clear whether the three graphic novels will cover all the books in what would have been the White Sand trilogy, or if it will just cover the first book, but either way, we're excited to finally see Taldain.

I've read the draft of White Sands that Brandon has previously sent out, and think it is at least as good as Elantris.  I definitely look forward to this series!

I personally think White Sand as it already is is BETTER than Elantris - and I have enjoyed both immensely.

Its great news! But not sure how I feel... I kinda wanted it in Novel format as well.

Still... any is better than none.

Should also make spotting worldhoppers entertaining. Whats the bet we'll see something in the back ground is suspicious clothes?

Is there any information on the artist selected for the graphic novels? (Or a timeline for that announcement?) I'm curious what art style they will be done in.

I'm so excited! Not just that we'll get to add more to the official cannon. I'm excited that my favorite author is branching into a new medium. Between this, the novels, novellas, short stories, the table-top game and the (hopefully) upcoming Mistborn game, I am very excited.

It isn't just a universe-spanning series, it is also now a multimedia project. It's exciting.

Why? You don't think it will do well in that form?

And has anyone heard if it will but the entire trilogy that was originally planned for publication or just the first story?

This is a little late, but White Sands was phenomenal and it's awesome he's pursuing the world further. I only wish that in addition to the graphic novel he continued with a traditional trilogy because, it was in my estimation, one of his best works.
