Shadows of Self Cover & Release Date

Big Mistborn news today! Tor has released the cover for the next book in the Mistborn Adventures series, Shadows of Self! This cover was done by Chris McGrath, the same artist who drew the covers for The Alloy of Law and the original paperback covers for the Era One Mistborn trilogy (not to be confused with the YA version of the Mistborn trilogy, which had different covers by Sam Weber).

The book has also been given an official release date of October 6, 2015. While Tor states that this is an "expected" release date, thus could be subject to a bit of change, we've now got a pretty solid idea of when this book will be coming out. We also got our first look at a description of the book.

Shadows of Self shows Mistborn’s society evolving as technology and magic mix, the economy grows, democracy contends with corruption, and religion becomes a growing cultural force, with four faiths competing for converts.

This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial’s progress in its tracks.

Shadows of Self will give fans of The Alloy of Law everything they’ve been hoping for and, this being a Brandon Sanderson book, more, much more.

So, what do you guys think? The cover appears to depict Wax and Marasi being all serious and whatnot. What are the four faiths? What acts of terrorism? Feel free to wander on over to the forums to discuss the cover or anything else of interest!

My favorite tweet is @JSebRibeiro, who said it starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman xD

Or Wax and Steris or Wax and Ranette or Wax and Wayne in drag. ;)

What are the four faiths?

Probably Sliverism, Survivorism, Pathism and Neo-Trellism.

EDIT: My bad. It's not neo-Trellism it's just Trellism which is neo-Trelagism. I was reminded of this by reading the linked thread which pretty much says all of this anyway.

Love the painting and the cover, except for the fact that Wax's head obscures part of the title. It could easily have been scaled so that wasn't a problem, and I am not a fan of that style.

Cover to me screams, "Mistborn, now with more vampires and steampunk."

>Vampire/steampunk novel by Sanderson

I'd read it.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks Wax looks like Tome Cruise.

Not really how I pictured Marasi, but... dang.

I really love this cover! Can't wait 'till October.

I actually found the original reference to the term "Shadow of self." In Hero of Ages, Sazed is talking to the First Generation of the Kandra, who were Alendi's fellow Terris packmen. It reads "'His [Preservation's] mind, however, was all but destroyed--for this was the sacrifice he made to imprison Ruin.' 'The sliver remains,' another reminded him. 'The shadow of self.'" Apparently "shadow of self" is the term the Kandra elders use for the mist spirit who appears and stabs the Hero's companion near the Well. That raises an entirely different set of possibilities.

By the way, I keep editing this post to try to get the quote at the top to actually register as a quote.

Actually Brandon has been asked about this, and the title actually refers to something else:

Questioner: My other question is about the phrase “Shadows of Self”.  It’s mentioned in the last Mistborn book [...] so are we ever going to see the shadows in Shadows of Self?

Brandon: We are not going-- Well yes and no.  What it is referencing in this book is the different roles that each person plays in their life.  That is the core meaning of Shadows of Self.  But there is also, there is a kandra involved, which they change shape and become different people, so “who are you?” and identity is a big thing.
