Shadows of Self ARC giveaway

Hello Sanderfans!

Many of us are fairly excited about both Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning coming out soon. That's two books more in Scadrial, and we get more hats, more allomancy, and hopefully another broadsheet. Tor's recently posted that they've printed out the ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies, for reviewers and stuff), and now it looks like they're planning on doing something with them. Tor is having a Sweepstakes for an ARC of Shadows of Self and a few other books on their little-known Tor/Forge blog. All you have to do is sign up for their newsletter.

It's pretty easy to sign up, and you'd get a chance to read Shadows of Self months before anyone else does! It'd be a blessing, but a curse- for who would you talk to about it? Also, it's a chance to read some other ARCs of books coming out this fall. Who wants to turn down the chance for free books?

So go on there and sign up! The winner will be announced on the 24th, so good luck to you all.

Awww US/CA only :'(

This is almost always for legal reasons, so don't think they are snubbing you. It's rarely for shipping reasons (though I think that is part of it).

Oh I understand that - I come across it frequently enough. I mean, I actually went looking for it in the terms, because the blog didn't mention regions but I expected it to be region locked.

Yeah most giveaways/competitions the first thing to do is check if it's only available in the US/Canada, cos it almost always is. :P

Edit: (for clarity) I'm not complaining, I totally get why it's the case.

I am not exaggerating when I say that I bought a flight ticket to New York as soon as I finished reading this, under the flimsy excuse of visiting family. Family... Wayne's hat... Family... Wayne's hat... I'll pretend its a difficult choice over the phone.

The terms say, "If an entrant selected in the drawing is a resident of Canada, to be declared a winner he/she must correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question to be administered by telephone or email." ... Mathmatical skill-testing question? What?

Come on now... your kidding. Right? *Goes checks the terms again* Wait... for reals? Um... you Canadians out there. Any reason why they feel the need to check whether or not you can math? Is that normal?

TOR is Canada's overbearing parent.

"No Sanderson until you've finished your math homework, CANADA."

"But United States gets to read Sanderson, and they haven't done theirs yet!"

"Well, that's why they're only 28th in the class."

Yeah I remember seeing that in an earlier contest, it's just how Canadian Sweepstakes laws work.  You know how in the US they always have disclaimers about how "No purchase is necessary", this is essentially the Canadian equivalent, they're just using a different tactic to do the same thing.

Eh. I'll have to read the article mentioned in the article for it to make more sense, but I get the idea.

So, Canadians get to be smart, but in the US you have to be lucky?

My 8th-grade math teacher liked to say, "Gambling is a tax on people who are bad at math."  So apparently Canada uses sweepstakes law to discourage their citizens from being bad at math...I like it.

Basically there's a law against free giveaways in canada without some sort of contest, so they ask you a maths question to allow them to do a free giveaway. It's a well-established loophole.

Be glad you're not in Australia or New Zealand, the only giveaway I got to participate in was when I posted dissapointed and the author emailed me it anyway. :)
