News Roundup: Stormlight 3 Fall 2017, White Sand Preview, Elantris Leatherbound is Back

We have been insanely busy at Hoid's Secret Base (or the 17th Shard HQ) recently, so we have a huge deal of news to talk about. Today, we will be talking about a more precise Stormlight 3 release date (it's later than you would like), a sweet, sweet preview of the White Sand graphic novel, and the second printing of the Elantris leatherbound which you can order right now.

Stormlight Three Now to be Released Fall 2017

Revealed in the Calamity signing in Houston, Texas, Stormlight 3 will now be out in 2017. This is a bit later than the State of the Sanderson 2015 implied initially. In that older post, Brandon thought we would see it in Fall 2016, with the caveat that his team warned him that that would not be realistic, and so we would see it in 2017 instead. I am sure many of you were hoping on an early 2017 release, but it appears that it will be Fall 2017.

This, I am sure, is disappointing. You might wonder why it is taking so long, and why Brandon has so many other projects on his plate. I would like to say that Brandon was extremely rushed on both Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I think we would all prefer that he gets these huge, colossal books correct, and not have him need to change the ending, like he did with Words of Radiance. All this means is that even if the first draft gets done this summer, there needs to be a lot of revision and editing to make sure he gets it right.

As for why he works on other projects, he's said many times that working on other books keeps him fresh. If he didn't write other books, that wouldn't actually speed up him writing Stormlight 3. We would just have times where we don't get any Brandon stories at all. I think this all works out, in the end.

White Sand Preview, Coming in June

io9 has posted an extensive (and exclusive) preview of the White Sand graphic novel, which is set in the cosmere on a planet called Taldain. This was the story that Brandon wrote that got him his agent, Joshua Bilmes, but was never published. Now we see more of it, and it's pretty cool.

We get to see a ton of pages from White Sand, and the first volume is coming out in June! Exciting.

White Sand's graphic novel is being produced by Dynamite Entertainment, with writer Rik Hoskin, artist Julius Gopez, and colorist Ross Campbell transforming the source material into the graphic novel format. You can be sure we will keep you updated on our first look into this important planet. (It's where the Ars Arcanum author is from!)

Elantris Leatherbound Back in Stock

We knew the Elantris Anniversary Leatherbound Edition would come back in stock eventually. It is a little later than we expected, but it is at last back in stock on Brandon's store! The last ones sold out rapidly, so you'll want to get on this one quickly, I imagine. It is a second edition, but this leatherbound is so incredible, it is absolutely gorgeous. I could not recommend it more as the definitive version of Elantris. If my apartment ever burns down and I take one belonging out of my house, it'd probably be my copy of this. Seriously.

Sad about Fall 2017. Is that an "at the latest", or a "probably at this time" projection? I seem to recall his original "at the latest" date for Calamity being a fair bit later than the actual release date, so maybe there's a hope for it being more like Summer or maybe even late Spring 2017?

And I just read that scene in the prose version for the first time yesterday. I'm about a quarter of the way through, and I am really excited for the graphic novel.

Let's be honest, Stormlight is definitely on a 3-4 year cycle, so Stormlight 10 has a chance of being out in 2045, about 30 years from now. If Mistborn in Space and Dragonsteel can't be written until after Stormlight 10...

gaaah! what am i going to do until fall 2017? I must find a cadmium bubble!

on the other hand, since brandon writes so many different books at the same time, he may as well write dragonsteel and mistborn in space before he has finished the stormlight archive, and wait to publish them.

but by this time we'll all be old...

Of course, we could be the type of old folks that complain about how Brandon was better in the good ol' days.

Okay, now I am depressed :( I do think him having more time is good--being on the inside a bit and can see into the process--but yeah, that is... a long time.

Guys, guys. It isn't that bad. Look how many novels we've had in just ten years! Elantris, Mistborn, WoA, HoA, Warbreaker, WoK, WoR, AoL, SoS, BoM, Rithmatist, Steelheart, Firefight, Calamity. Add to that the three huge Wheel of Time books. And nine or ten short stories/novellas. I know Stormlight is everyone's favorite, it's mine too, but appreciate the fact that Brandon is a fast, young writer who will be writing for another 40 years. If he does this many books each decade, that's almost another 50 novels!

I'm sure he thinks about this, but it worries because of how he constantly says he wants Stormlight to come out every other year. Almost 3 books in, that hasn't happened and he's added more books since he started. Hopefully he works on some of these Cosmere/post-Stormlight books as his off projects.

Stormlight has become a monster. I think originally, only Way of Kings was suppose to be over a thousand pages. Now, it looks like one Oathbringer is set, a precedent will be solidified and each Stormlight volume will be a massive doorstopper. This is good in some ways, particularly if they maintain quality. But it does probably add to the time it takes to write an installment.

I'm mostly happy so long as there is something coming out about the Cosmere every year. This year in particular seems like a good year for that. But personally, I kinda want an Elantris sequel, and it seems that it's still five years away. I feel really sorry for those that want the Warbreaker sequel!

I am disappointed. There is no other way for me to process it. I can only hope the book will be worth the wait.

How sure we can be of this date? I mean, given the record of previous books, what are the odds of the date shifting earlier/later?

I have to agree, how can we be sure? This is the third or fourth time the schedule ships.... Though in all probability, early 2018 is probably the latest we are going to see the book. I wouldn't expect before November or Christmas 2017 though. Seems reasonable as each time we received a schedule, we had a memo one month later it would slip.

Technically, there was never any firm release date, so it never really "slipped," in my book. It's not like certain other authors we could mention...

But when he said Christmas 2016 wasn't that a firm release date? He said on several occasions he was committed to this date and now we are getting the book one complete year later than what used to be the plan just a few months ago....

It isn't like other authors, but I am worried. It sets a precedent.

Until I hear something from the publisher proper, with a specific date (not "hey in this range"), I don't consider it real. What happened was Brandon wanted a date but other members of his team wanted it pushed back for more revision/editing time.

Yeah I guess it makes sense when you put it this way. Though, I wish Brandon was more careful when announcing dates: it creates expectations within his fans later followed by disappointment.

I hope he is going to consult more his team, in the future, before promising release dates to his readers.

See personally I'd rather have a date, even if it later gets pushed back, than nothing because then at least I have a rough idea.  One of my favorite things about Brandon is how transparent he is.  He keeps us updated on stuff like this, a lot of authors don't.  We just have to understand that until there's a formal announcement by the publisher a release date can, and probably will, change.

I just adore Brandons Progress bars and these updates, i don't mind waiting as much when i have an idea of when it's actually out.

Thank you for being awesome.
