  1. I asked two questions, but I don't remember them verbatim. Luckily, someone was recording so it should be posted soon. The thing that stood out to me was that Brandon said Allomantic Pewter roughly doubles a person's strength. I was surprised because this was significantly below what I was expecting.
  2. Hey guys, this is my first signing (I tried to go to the Philly one last year but...) so I am really excited! However, I also have an etiquette question. Is it acceptable to give Brandon something when I see him in the signing line? I'm not really asking if its common, more wondering if he has ever vehemently rejected a gift of some sort. His work has been a huge blessing on my life and I kind of want to show my appreciation. Any wisdom from the signing line experts?
  3. ccstat, I think you have a point. If I am right that there are so many usable metals, then there will be significant overlap. However, I don't think there will be as much overlap as you think. For instance, I think Feruchemy has plenty of room to expand. How about height? Fill to be short, tap to get tall. Or there could be durability, melanin levels, awareness of cognitive realm, etc. I also think there is a lot we don't know about hemalurgy. With the first twelve metals, I believe you can already steal all allomantic and feruchemic abilities in addition to giving the four blessings. That leaves four metals which steal something unknown. Brandon has been hinting for a while that there are things that can be done with hemalurgy that are far beyond what it has previously been used for. In addition, we do have a WoB somewhere that says that gaining mistborn abilities is just a side affect of burning lerasium and it has some other purpose. Basically what I'm getting at is that Brandon still has a lot more cards up his sleeve in regards to the metalic arts than we might think at the moment. I also agree with moogle. As far as we know at the moment, alloying lerasium might be pointless. I suspect that some unlucky scandrian will discover this while wasting a lot of valuable metals in the process. Or maybe Brandon will surprise us. That wouldn't be like him at all.
  4. I apologize if someone else has already done this math, but I haven't seen it yet, so here we go. So yesterday, I was thinking about how crazy awesome the metalic arts are. I was thinking about just how many powers there are and remembered that there are over 100 possible abilities available on scandrial. We arrive at this number through some simple math. (16 regular metals + 2 god metals)(3 metalic arts)= 54 abilities. We currently have some info on the workings of 44 of these powers. In addition to these base powers, we have WOBs that tell us that each of the base metals can be combined with atium or lerasium to form entirely new allomantic metals. So now we have (16 atium alloys + 16 lerasium alloys)(3 metalic arts)= 96 additional powers, bringing the total to 150 powers. Finally it has been hinted at that you could also have an alloy of lerasium and atium, harmonium if you will. This adds 3 powers (1 new metal)(three metalic arts) bringing the grand total to 153 powers. But is that really the grand total? Because, actually, we now know that it isn't. In SoS, a new metal I'll call trellium was used as a hemalurgic spike, bringing the confirmed total to 154 abilities. But the implications don't stop there. I'm about to jump off into the deep end of theoryland, but bare with me. If a different God metal can be used to power hemalurgy, it stands to reason that it could be used by all the metalic arts, bringing are total to 156 powers. Not a big deal, but then you start to think about the big picture. If trell's investiture can be made into a metal, than why couldn't all the shards make metals? If they could, and it seems reasonable to believe, this brings the possible abilities to 153 + (14 other shards)(3 metalic arts) = 195 abilities. But here's where things get really, really weird. Not only does it seem that the God metals can be burned, tapped, and spiked, alloys of the God metals can be burned, tapped, and spiked as seen by the existence of harmonium. This leads to truly mindblowing possibilities. If my math is correct, this leads to (138 possible combinations of two shards)(3 metalic arts) = 414, 414 + 195 other powers = 609 possible powers. Now, is this actually likely to occur? Absolutely not. In the first place, several of the shards are shattered. Second, I wouldn't be surprised if two shards are required to bond the way preservation and ruin did to create an alloy of their metals, and it is unlikely that ruin odium will bond with cultivation any time soon. And finally, even if they did occur, trellium behaved in much the same way hemalurgically that atium is believed to (able to steal any power), so I would bet that if brandon went down this road there would be a lot of overlap. Still, its fascinating to think about, right? What does burning Odiumium do? How many powers are there actually? What if you could make combinations of 3 or more shardic metals? That would be (...Nevermind. I'm not even going to try to do that math). Or what if each of the shards could make an alloy with each of the 16 base metals? That would be (16 base metals)(14 other shards)(3 metalic arts)+ 195 other powers = 867 total abilities. And that's not even counting the 256 perks that come from mixing allomancy and feruchemy. Simply due to the time involved in coming up with such a staggering number of powers, I find it unlikely that this fever dream of a theory will actually come true. But I will say this. If I'm even close to being right, and you really can burn combinations of God metals, and there are people who want to bring Adonalsium back... Well, it would be a shame if some allomancer didn't mix himself up a 16 shard alloy and burn Adonalsiumium. Who knows what would happen then?
  5. The whole thing that Shai can't forge herself to have investiture without imputing that much investiture seems to confirm something for a while, which is that investiture follows the laws of conservation of energy. Therefore, one can not use investiture to create more or less investiture, investiture can only change form.
  6. Hey all! I'm loving this conversation, this is actually something I think about a lot myself. I love seeing how a persons religions influences the story they tell. One thing I have noticed is that religious people who write tend to, without writing about their religion per se, write stories from the world view of their religion. For instance, Christianity believes that there is good and evil, that there is good in everyone, that we should love everyone, and that sacrifices have meaning. Knowing this about Christianity, certain details start to pop in Sanderson's work. For instance, when Shallan brings out the good in the deserters, or when Kelsier, or Vin, or Elend, sacrifice their lives to defeat evil, or when Kaladin chooses to do the good and honorable thing simply because it is the good thing, or when Kaladin fights to protect the man he hates... And those are only the examples off the top of my head, the list goes on and on. Even his inclusion of atheism comes from a world view of respect for all people and a recognition that all people must search for truth. I think his Christian world view is also the reason why the vast majority of his characters are heroes or at least people who are trying their best (unlike the more popular anti-hero style). Anyway, this is an aspect of Brandon's theology influencing his writing that hasn't been mentioned yet and I thought it was worth mentioning. The most fascinating thing to me about this is that, even though we all as 17th sharders, come from different beliefs, and also many atheists, we all can love a christian kind of story, (that is the kind of story that comes from the unique world view of a christian)
  7. Another possibility is that Hoid is saying he will come back as a ghost if he dies, like what Kelsier is doing on Scandrial.
  8. These are some good theories, however, don't we have a WOB somewhere that aluminum messes with Feruchemical Gold? I don't know where it is but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere.
  9. Wow (whistle noise), that's a lot. Take your time! And thanks for the update!
  10. Is there anyone currently working on a transcription of the comic con? Or have all the good bits already been shared?
  11. I'm glad you all like it! And you are right Steel Inquisitor, it does require several leaps of possibility. However, I would argue that it only requires 2 1/2 leaps of possibility. What I mean is that I think Rao was definitely misinterpreted. Spirit and essence are basically synonyms, but spiritual power is not a synonym with either spirit or essence. It would have to be "power from an essence" or something of that sort to be a synonym for spiritual power. But to assume that that is THE misinterpretation is a leap of possibility, as well as the other two you mentioned, so the validity of my theory remains to be seen.
  12. Hi everyone! This is my first post, so I am not sure if it will have all the correct citations and such (if anyone sees anything I do wrong, please let me know!). But, I have been stalking this site for a long time now(as well as anything with Brandon Sanderson on the cover) and I had a theory and... well I just have to share it. My theory has to do with Elantris and two WoBs. First, we have a WoB that there is a "Big hint" in Elantris as to the nature of world hopping. Many people have believed that this big hint is the mural of an elantrian jumping into a pool that looks like a gate. I think this is a good theory, however Brandon never confirmed this (despite the scene in WoR showing Hoid appearing in a, possible, shardpool). After much pestering, someone finally got a hint about the hint about world hopping out of Sanderson, and now we have the WoB, "Raoden misinterpreted an Aon." A popular opinion about this misinterpreted Aon is that he misinterpreted Tia, the travel Aon. I think not, however. My logic is as follows. In order for it to be an "obvious hint" we would have to have, somewhere, a correct translation of the Aon and be able to compare it to the incorrect translation by Raoden of said Aon. So I checked Tia in the Ars Arcanum in the end and it was pretty much what Raoden thought it was, travel or transportation. No go there. So I checked some of the other Aons in the Ars Arcanum against Raoden's descriptions of them (interestingly enough, Raoden only describes a few Aons). Quickly I found the following. Raoden describes the aon Rao as, "Spirit or Spiritual Power" but the Ars Arcanum translates Rao as "Spirit or Essence". This may seem like a minor detail, but if you think about it, it isn't. First of all, Raoden's mistranslation makes sense. After all the result of Aon Rao is an increase in spiritual power (the ending of Elantris providing a dramatic example of this). However, I am suggesting that this isn't the primary action of Rao but the result of it. Second, we know from SA that the cognitive realm, or shades mar, contains ideas and ideals. Things exist in the cognitive realm based on how people view them, on what people believe they are. You might say that the Cognitive Realm contains the Essence of things. Suddenly, it all comes together. We know from Sanderson that the Dor is really the cognitive realm where all the power of the shattered shards, aona and skai, is running rampant without a proper channel. (This is where my theory gets a little fuzzy and could use some refinement but the basic idea is) Aon Rao creates a greater connection to Essences and Spirits and since there is so much uncontrolled energy in the cognitive realm it poors immediately across this bridge creating a burst of spirit energy. It follows, however, that one could go the other direction across said bridge. That's the end of my theory folks! Let me know what you think! Ps. (SA3 spoilers):
