  1. Currently reading the Blind Watchmaker, Richard Dawkins' book. It is awesome (apart from the first chapter). How are the Spanish translations of cosmere books ? Are the good ?
  2. If he were here, there would've been a good amount of backlash, and he would be...um grateful that he's a famous personality. The police is not...lenient with those who defy lockdown. Punishment goes from.. downright funny to being uncomfortable.
  3. Updates as of 7/4/20 ( 4/7/20 for those in the US). Education Prospects - B I got my course deferred to fall. Hope covid-19 situation improves by then. In the meantime, I can proceed to learn some new things, like NodeJS (I'm a Java person). Employment - B WFH is surprisingly good. We are having much better coordination whilst being remote than we had earlier. The only downside (and a big one) is I can't go out on breaks with my friends. I miss all that walking in the moonlight in our campus garden having a firm belief that the Latte I'll be having will be the best. Friends & Relationships - C This has deteriorated. I talk much less with my friends now. My friends and I developed a misunderstanding which will take some time to clear I hope. When you are face to face with someone misunderstandings get resolved very quickly as compared to when your only mode of contact is a chat app. Tho, I am in better contact with my family now. Video call, when done occasionally is a good thing. Daily Life - B+ I am surprised at the quality of food that I'm having during lockdown. Earlier we had a cook who used to prepare meal for us. Now my flatmates and I do, and it tastes so good. Oh, and my routine has also got better. I'm no longer the guy who used to sleep at 4 and wake up at 12. In other news, we had a surge in outbreaks and it has given fodder to conspiracy theorists, fake news, and communal hatred. Rather than coming together to combat this pandemic, people here are busy attacking each other and their communities.
  4. Education Prospects - C I resigned from my company in order to pursue higher education in Canada. The classes will start in May, so I've to reach 14 days before. Got all my visa and so, but now travel has been cancelled. I'm thinking of deferring my course to September, but then I've to apply again Employment - C We are fortunate that our companies don't lay off employees like they do in other places. If they do, I don't know they might face massive backlash. The gov. head also appealed to all businesses to not do so. However, even though I am in notice period, my job has me getting busier than ever. I never thought that our systems had that many structural deficiencies. Covid-19 has been since December. Those living under rocks, might have known in Feb. Some really believe in starting work at 11th hour. This approach isn't good when you've a pandemic going on and you live in a bustling metropolis. Providing each employee a work from home has been a YUGE challenge. Fortunately, there are no cases (yet) where I live. Friends & Relationships - B Most of my friends work in other companies. Some in other projects. Almost all have been fortunate to get WFH, and have gone home. Though, the one that matters the most is my former work-mate. We became really good friends, only now were we able to hang out and so. Thanks to Covid-19, she had to rush home a fortnight early, and I believe, I shall never meet her again My family is doing good though. This keeps me happy. They said the virus will die in our scorching summers. But it started raining at my home (it never rains at this time). I thought of going home, but there the gov has banned all forms of public transport (save the rail, but it is of no use there). Daily Life - B+ I usually have had no life apart from work, so its not that out of ordinary. There's panic being spread on the internet. People think by sharing news they show care, but when you don't do basic fact check and apply your mind, all it does is spread panic. At my home, people have been panic buying and hauling food items. Here it is not that prevalent (at least in my area), that's what I saw today. I regret not knowing how to cook. Maybe this is a time for me to learn that. Plus, I can read books too. I will focus more on learning French language. Maybe I'll get better at pronunciation. There's a new Netflix related extension on Chrome. I think my friend & I can finally watch LoTR together
  5. Some days ago, I re-read Trevor Noah's book : Born a Crime. I find it amazing. It has some good quotes. The following I like the most: 1. We spend so much time being afraid of failure, afraid of rejection. But regret is the thing we should fear most. Failure is an answer. Rejection is an answer. Regret is an eternal question you will never have the answer to. 2. The hood made me realise that crime succeeds because crime does the one thing the government doesn’t do: crime cares. Crime is grassroots. Crime looks for the young kids who need support and a lifting hand. Crime offers internship programmes and part-time jobs and opportunities for advancement. Crime gets involved in the community. Crime doesn’t discriminate. ( Sadly, this is the thing that has been going on in some areas. ) 3. We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited. 4. People love to say, “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” What they don’t say is, “And it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.” That’s the part of the analogy that’s missing. And lastly, 5. The first thing I learned about having money was that it gives you choices. People don’t want to be rich. They want to be able to choose. The richer you are, the more choices you have. That is the freedom of money. ( I felt it when I started earning money. You can buy almost anything you want. No more asking mom for money )
  6. I will be going home in late October. It is awesome because: 1. It is the time for Diwali, and the whole place is in a festive mood. My best memories are from this time. 2. The climate will be amazing. It is early winter and the wind is chilly. Perfect for late night and/or early morning walks. Plus, the winter sun, is the best sun ever. There's light and the heat is just alright. I'm much hyped about the climate because my hometown is a warm place. In summers the temperature is around 45°C (or 113°F) 3. And the most important reason - I will be meeting my friends (and the girl who I like) after more than 2 years. We last met during our graduation ceremony. We have planned some outing in the city, and a visit to our college to relive old memories.
  7. It's really late for an answer. Anyway, both are necessary for certain topics - Electro-magnetic Field Theory for example. Like many topics, they're victims of teachers teaching them badly. One of my teachers taught us flip-flops like this - "What is, is. What is not, maybe it can be." and I never understood that topic.
  8. This Spanish song is amazing. The best I have ever listened to. Labios Rotos (MTV Session) by Zoé
  9. Some (maybe all) might be quite common. 1. I find F.R.I.E.N.D.S. to be incredibly over-rated, one of the most over-rated series till date, not at all realistic, and people are just coming in and out of doors all the time. There are many great comedy series like Yes, Minister and its sequel Yes, Prime Minister, which I consider the best comedy series ever created. 2. Point 1 can be said for superhero movies, esp. MCU. Endgame was the dictionary definition of average, and a lesson in how sequels ought not to be made. Though The Dark Knight trilogy certainly lives up to its fame. 3. Modern Anime is stupid. Searching for a good anime nowadays is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Fanservice has ruined everything. 4. Mistborn era 2 books are average (opinion as of present). Not best, not worst, but average. I prefer Elantris to them. 5. Ursula K Le Guin >>> Tolkien. 6. Bottled water should be banned. It is a necessity and the govt. should provide it. They're literally making us pay for something that falls from the sky(rain after the first few showers) or comes from ground (wells) ( I believe there's some quote in one of Sanderson's books, Shadows of Self maybe)
  10. Started the Wheel of Time series again. Read the first book. It read it 7 years ago. It was the first novel I had read and was amazed by it. It is good. I'm onto the second one. I have some issues with the depiction of women in the book. They are quite... emotional. And the whole 'MEN' thing. Still, I like it. Maybe I have too much expectations, or maybe it is because times have changed since then. I also started (well, it is the incorrect word), Jane Austen's novel 'Pride and Prejudice'. I read it while waiting for my flight at airport (reached 7 hours earlier ), and went till chapter 36 in my first reading. I have read very few classics (Silas Manor, Brother's Karamazov, Great Expectations), but this one is quickly becoming my favourite. It is quite difficult to believe that Austen made such protagonists 200 years ago.
  11. This poll is UNFAIR. One cannot have just 'one' favourite Malazan book. Had to use a random number to select between the 4 I like (MoI).
  12. I tried starting Prince of Thorns... couldn't get past a couple of pages. I...just couldn't tolerate Jorg. I read the reviews (maybe that was a mistake), and one stood out in particular. That one said that Jorg was the perfect villain-protagonist. That said, maybe I'll read it again in future. It has happened before. I once tried 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' in 2012 and gave up after a chapter. After 4 years I tried again, (and finished the whole series in a month) and it has since become one of my favourite books. I cannot fathom how I couldn't read it the first time. Malazan had an interesting thing. I tried it 7 times before giving up. On the 8th time, I started and finished the series in... 2 years. I remember purchasing last 4 books using an Amazon gift card that my sister won.
  13. Yep! That's what I've decided to do. Thanks everyone.
  14. Indeed. But here's the problem, I don't know which book of his, she has already read. And i have read only the Alchemist (nothing else). I fear it will be like gifting Mistborn to a Sanderson fan. But as Ammanas said, it is the thought that counts, I guess she'll appreciate that I've taken her choice into consideration.
  15. So I have to gift someone (the canonical someone), a book on their birthday. This is the established protocol in our group (and it is not too heavy a burden on my light/shallow pockets). Anyway, I am in a conundrum on this one: She likes Paulo Coelho (she had already told me), whereas I am planning to gift her Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I am not a big fan of him (have read only The Alchemist). She's just not into fantasy (it would be a dream come true for me if it had been the case). Anyway, the point is: she likes books that have a happier tone and are inspiring. So, the crux of the matter is: "Should I gift her the book written by the author of her choice, or should I gift her the book that I like?"
