  1. Woah, I just turned from a spren into a darkeyes. How did that happen? I guess that is more accurate. I am darkeyed. Although, based on size, I could also be someone's spren. I'm only 4'10." But then again, I don't have any special powers as much as I do want them.
  2. I agree with you. He did seem guilt ridden in the end. I felt really bad for him. He's complicated with such a hard life (grandparents murdered, slavery, oppressed by light eyes, etc.). I think he will eventually redeem himself, maybe sacrifice himself to save Kaladin in the last moment in some kind of conflict. I don't know, that's just how I see it all play out for him. I hope that he ends up doing the right thing.
  3. Hilarious! I voted for Shallan, but I wish that Kaladin ends up with someone else. I used to like the idea of Shallan and Kaladin together until I read the chapters after the chasm scenes. Shallan thought about Kaladin just once as a love interest after they spent an intimate time together. She never seemed to be in awe of Kaladin and his abilities (I mean, he glows in the dark and flies--who else does that??). She seems more in awe of Adolin's face than anything. After the chasm scene, I'm convinced that Kaladin is smitten by Shallan, but Shallan just did not seem that into him. I hope this relationship is more convincing in the future books. I don't think Adolin and Shallan will last. Something is going to happen to Adolin, and I think what he did at the end of WoR would not sit well with Shallan. He might alter so much to cause a major strain in their relationship. Also, I wonder if he will be one of the people who dies. (That's why there will be a Renarin book in the future and not an Adolin book. Renarin may be the future Highprince) Shallan is like Navani. Both of them were kind of scared by the intensity of their "real" love interests, Kaladin and Dalinar (who are often described as being much alike as well). Dalinar did not decide to kiss Navani until she was truly vulnerable and open to him. He never trusted her that much before. Shallan doesn't seem very trustworthy, either. Maybe that would hold Kaladin back. So maybe Navani will talk some sense into Shallan and tell her not to make the same mistake she made by choosing Gavilar over Dalinar. I like Shallan a lot, but I really don't like her when she is with either Kaladin (banter was too acerbic with him) OR Adolin (always thinking about how handsome he is but not much else). I loved it when Kaladin told her, "I just feel like you try too hard" when she just kept on talking and talking. And I was thinking, "yeah, stop trying too hard, Shallan." I would love to see Kaladin with an Edgedancer. He needs someone lighthearted. And it would be nice to see him partner up in battle with an Edgedancer. I think that would be so cool. I don't think getting Lift and Kaladin together is crazy. They can get together in the 2nd story arc when she is 23 and he is in his early 30's. That's not so bad, right? And plus, Syl does not like cryptics. She would like Wyndle better, I think. Wyndle can impress Syl with his crystals (which, per Wyndle, attracted "cryptics and honorspren alike")
  4. Yes! I believe there is another thread floating around here about favorite Stormlight characters. Mine are Kaladin, Syl, and Axies. Axies because he's so crazy and colorful. Could he be a KR? He sounds like a Willshaper: "'capricious, frustrating, unreliable'" and "inconsistent in temperament save for a general love of adventure, novelty, or oddity." Lift is an interesting one, too. At first I was annoyed with her, but after re-reading her section she has grown on me. As an Edgedancer, she is supposedly able to "ride the thinnest rope at speed, dance across rooftops, move through a battlefield like a ribbon on the wind." I think she will be a favorite of mine when she is older and we get to see her fight in battle (hopefully!) in the 2nd half of the 10 books. I hope Axies gets his own book as well in the 2nd story arc.
  5. Hi everyone! I just recently discovered the 17th Shard after finishing WoR last week. Now I'm finally doing it--I'm joining you guys! The Mistborn trilogy was my introduction to Sanderson. I read those books a couple of years ago and then moved on to the Alloy of Law, the Way of Kings, Warbreaker, and Elantris. I like the Stormlight Archives series the best so far. I was first introduced to fantasy when I was like 9 years old or so. My friend gave me a used copy of the Heir of Sea and Fire by Patricia A Mckillip. Even though this was the second of the Riddle Master Trilogy and I did not know about the Riddle Master of Hed (the first book) or the Harpist in the Wind (the last book) until years after, I was blown away! Patricia Mckillip, to this day, is my favorite author. I grew up reading a lot of female authors such as Meredith Ann Peirce, Robin McKinley (Deerskin is my favorite of hers), Louise Lawrence, Susan Fletcher, Susan Cooper, Anne McCaffrey, and Ursula K Leguin. I didn't like to read books that were too much like the Lord of the Rings (there were plenty in the 1980's and 90's). I stopped reading fantasy books in my late teens and most of my 20's, since work and school dominated my life. Also, I was not too impressed with the genre during 1990's and 2000's. The most famous series at this time was Harry Potter, which I liked and am glad that it made reading "cool," but it was not special to me at all. Maybe I'm just too old. I am coming to like the genre again and am impressed with what I am seeing with the new authors. Brandon Sanderson gives me hope! I also have read Brent Weeks and Patrick Rothfuss, but I must say Sanderson is my favorite of the epic fantasy writers. Now I am really impatient for the third Stormlight book. I am considering starting the Wheel of Times series. Is it worth reading? I am currently reading Cloud Atlas, Joseph Stiglitz's The Price of Inequality, and Trick or Treatment. Thanks for reading!
