  1. Worst command possible: "Collect Breath". Good command: "Protect the one who wields you" Funny commands: "Run away from trouble"
  2. It seems to me that Szeth might be a Deontist. From some random online dictionary: Deontological ethics or deontology is the normative ethical position that judges the morality of an action based on the action's adherence to a rule or rules.[1] It is sometimes described as "duty" or "obligation" or "rule"-based ethics, because rules "bind you to your duty".[2] Deontological ethics is commonly contrasted to consequentialism[3] and virtue ethics. Deontological ethics is also contrasted to pragmatic ethics. He might see failure to fulfill his obligation as more of a "wrong" than killing all those innocent people. Maybe his backstory will illuminate how he came to this philosophy. It might be cultural, or it might have been instilled in him by some experience.
  3. Maybe Nightblood would not judge Szeth as evil. It strikes me that Szeth is just an instrument for whoever holds control of him at the moment. Szeth even longs for somebody to kill him in order to stop the slaughter/havoc that he has been commanded to unleash. All in all, he seems more tragic than evil... Just my opinion.
  4. Hello, Name is Chris. Joined the Forum a couple days ago, right before going to the March 20 book signing in No VA. My recent reading history leading me to here: Been a Sci-Fi Fiction fan forever. Saw GoT Season 1 and thought "not bad, but I bet the book is better" Read all the Song of Ice and Fire books and thought "wow, maybe modern fantasy has a lot to offer" Looked for something to read next, and landed on this series called Mistborn Loved it!! Read Elantris, then Warbeaker. Loved them!!! Started branching out. Read Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold, loved it, and read all his stuff. Who know this Grimdark stuff could be so much fun?! Next up: Pat Rothfuss, Scott Lynch, Brent Weeks, Peter Brett, Mark Lawrence, Glen Cook, Richard K Morgan, Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher, Matt Stover, on and on and on. Guess I am now officially a Fantasy fan! Most recently, I read Way of Kings, Emporer's Soul, Steelheart, and WoR. It wasn't until reading Way of Kings and Emporer's Soul that I starting catching on to the Cosmere. Went online and ended up here. That's it. That's my journey. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on the Cosmere and sharing my ideas. Until then, take care and keep on reading. -Chris
  5. Hello everyone! I don't have a full report per se, but Sanderson answered two of my questions when he was signing my books. Q. Can you soul forge someone against their will? A: Yes Q: Could someone soul forge Nightblood to change its original intent/command from "Destroy Evil" to something else? A: Yes. But the person doing it would need to be expert at forging and it would take a lot to it. So now, we can imagine a Nightblood with other commands! What it the command was "Protect Life"? The sword might be able to block any attack, disarm opponents, but never give a killing blow. Or it might refuse to be drawn at all.
  6. Hi all. Going to my first signing in DC tomorrow (March 20, 2014), and so I am trying to prepare some questions. I plan to ask the question about whether Nightblood could be fueled by Stormlight. Some other questions for consideration: - Can you Soul Forge a person without their willing participation? She does it to herself and to an incapacitated emperor - we haven't seen it done against one's will. - Can you Soul Forge a sentient/Awakened object, like Nightblood? Could Shai re-write Nightblood's past to take away it's Investiture .. in effect killing it? - If a person can enter the Shadesmar, is that a first step to becoming a Worldhopper?
  7. I called the bookstore at the DC signing (the 20th) and they said it was a ticketed event. Is that the event you are going to you? They told me that you could buy WoR online and bring the receipt. Finished my Kindle version and am formulating my questions... This is my first signing, so I appreciate reading about what to expect..
